Hi. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I am Hilary Macias with the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 It's been four months since Maranatha completed 00:00:04.10\00:00:06.23 the Beryl Seventh-day Adventist church in Dominica. 00:00:06.27\00:00:08.87 And the congregation has been busy, 00:00:08.90\00:00:10.87 sharing the mission with their community 00:00:10.91\00:00:12.71 through home visitations and Bible studies. 00:00:12.74\00:00:15.31 As a result of much outrage, 00:00:15.34\00:00:17.31 they have already had 14 baptisms at the church. 00:00:17.35\00:00:20.92 The original Beryl Church was destroyed 00:00:20.95\00:00:23.22 during 2017's Hurricane Maria. 00:00:23.25\00:00:26.02 The Category 5 storm wiped out 00:00:26.05\00:00:28.26 most of the structures on the island, 00:00:28.29\00:00:29.99 including 28 of the 34 Adventist churches. 00:00:30.03\00:00:33.19 Beryl was among the places 00:00:33.23\00:00:34.86 that Maranatha helped to rebuild. 00:00:34.90\00:00:37.40 Maranatha is also constructing 00:00:37.43\00:00:38.80 a new community center in Wesley 00:00:38.83\00:00:40.44 and a new church for Bottega congregation. 00:00:40.47\00:00:43.57 All of this is only possible with your support. 00:00:43.61\00:00:46.84 As a non-profit organization, 00:00:46.88\00:00:48.64 we rely on your generosity 00:00:48.68\00:00:50.65 to respond to these types of needs. 00:00:50.68\00:00:53.21 Help fulfill the mission by making a donation. 00:00:53.25\00:00:56.18 Go to our website 00:00:56.22\00:00:57.55 or call the number on your screen. 00:00:57.59\00:00:58.95 Agony, agony, agony. 00:01:23.81\00:01:26.55 I agonized at my future. 00:01:26.58\00:01:28.62 For I knew no more than a potential mother, 00:01:28.65\00:01:31.09 merely at the age of nine. 00:01:31.12\00:01:33.22 I wondered what a future 00:01:33.25\00:01:35.02 it will be for me. 00:01:35.06\00:01:37.06 As I grew up, 00:01:37.09\00:01:38.83 I looked at my mom, 00:01:38.86\00:01:40.30 an example of the future 00:01:40.33\00:01:42.23 that awaited me, 00:01:42.26\00:01:43.63 merely at the age of nine. 00:01:43.67\00:01:46.00 She always toiled under the hot beating sun 00:01:46.03\00:01:48.57 and in the strong biting cold, 00:01:48.60\00:01:50.31 looking for the black little gold 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.14 just to earn money for the day. 00:01:52.17\00:01:54.11 Oh, what a painful future. 00:01:54.14\00:01:57.15 I looked at myself and wondered 00:01:57.18\00:01:59.35 what a potential mother I would make 00:01:59.38\00:02:00.98 merely at the age of nine. 00:02:01.02\00:02:03.49 No! I had to escape. 00:02:03.52\00:02:05.45 The journey took long. 00:02:10.86\00:02:15.10 I was walking on foot. 00:02:15.13\00:02:17.27 I started walking 00:02:20.87\00:02:23.67 at 12pm 00:02:23.71\00:02:26.91 after 9:00 at night. 00:02:26.94\00:02:30.08 The rain was flooding all over. 00:02:30.11\00:02:33.72 The rivers, I pass through, 00:02:33.75\00:02:37.09 they almost... 00:02:37.12\00:02:39.29 Some water is here, another one is here. 00:02:39.32\00:02:41.62 And at that time I was too short, 00:02:41.66\00:02:44.79 not the way I am now. 00:02:44.83\00:02:47.76 I met wild animal there, 00:02:47.80\00:02:52.93 but God is able. 00:02:52.97\00:02:55.64 They have not hurt me. 00:02:55.67\00:02:58.97 I have just passed through them. 00:02:59.01\00:03:02.58 This is Aliza Tianina. 00:03:02.61\00:03:05.28 When she was six years old, 00:03:05.31\00:03:06.72 Aliza ran away from home. 00:03:06.75\00:03:09.22 For her she says that it was good 00:03:09.25\00:03:11.35 that it was raining 00:03:11.39\00:03:12.72 because, you know, when it's raining, 00:03:12.75\00:03:14.09 everybody's asleep. 00:03:14.12\00:03:15.46 Nobody will think of going out, 00:03:15.49\00:03:17.03 nobody will think of someone can run out, you see. 00:03:17.06\00:03:21.10 But when she arrived, we saw a miracle 00:03:21.13\00:03:24.30 because imagining of someone 00:03:24.33\00:03:28.24 running in the cold, 00:03:28.27\00:03:30.41 passing through some rivers 00:03:30.44\00:03:32.54 and go to Karuah. 00:03:32.57\00:03:34.84 It's God that was I can say. 00:03:34.88\00:03:39.21 The decision to leave home risked Aliza's life 00:03:39.25\00:03:41.58 but as a Maasai girl in Kenya, 00:03:41.62\00:03:43.39 the consequences of staying home 00:03:43.42\00:03:45.29 would have been worse. 00:03:45.32\00:03:47.62 The Maasai culture 00:03:47.66\00:03:49.59 is one of the very old cultures 00:03:49.62\00:03:54.76 within the Kenyan society. 00:03:54.80\00:03:57.07 And for them, 00:03:57.10\00:03:59.23 what they value most 00:03:59.27\00:04:00.70 is their cows 00:04:00.74\00:04:03.71 and the boy child. 00:04:03.74\00:04:05.34 So the girl child is more or less like a property 00:04:05.37\00:04:09.64 to be disposed off as and when, 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.81 you know, they're ready for. 00:04:11.85\00:04:13.92 As Maasai, you have to take care of the cattle. 00:04:13.95\00:04:17.95 You have to give birth like a chicken, 00:04:17.99\00:04:21.36 you cannot count. 00:04:21.39\00:04:25.36 No, you cannot stay like the way you do. 00:04:25.39\00:04:28.36 You stay like your child must be created 00:04:28.40\00:04:31.10 to give birth to another. 00:04:31.13\00:04:34.20 Just give birth 00:04:34.24\00:04:36.81 until the end of your life. 00:04:36.84\00:04:38.94 And so these girls are married off 00:04:38.97\00:04:42.38 at very early age 00:04:42.41\00:04:44.21 in exchange of cows. 00:04:44.25\00:04:45.95 So by the time a girl is being taken off, 00:04:45.98\00:04:49.28 the cows have already been delivered 00:04:49.32\00:04:51.95 and that is something valued 00:04:51.99\00:04:53.66 both by their fathers 00:04:53.69\00:04:56.39 and even the mothers. 00:04:56.42\00:04:58.16 And before that is done, 00:04:58.19\00:04:59.69 they go through the FGM. 00:04:59.73\00:05:03.70 FGM or female genital mutilation 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.60 is a painful and dangerous ritual 00:05:06.63\00:05:08.77 Maasai girls must undergo 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.24 to be prepared for marriage. 00:05:10.27\00:05:12.61 It comes with the risk of infection, 00:05:12.64\00:05:14.31 urination problems, 00:05:14.34\00:05:15.68 severe bleeding and even death. 00:05:15.71\00:05:18.05 FGM is illegal in Kenya 00:05:18.08\00:05:19.95 but continues to be a common practice 00:05:19.98\00:05:21.88 among the Maasai 00:05:21.92\00:05:23.25 who usually live in remote areas. 00:05:23.28\00:05:25.95 In Maasai community 00:05:25.99\00:05:27.66 when a girl is born, 00:05:27.69\00:05:29.42 she's just seen to be like a source of wealth, 00:05:29.46\00:05:32.93 a source of income for the family 00:05:32.96\00:05:35.16 because once you born as a girl, 00:05:35.20\00:05:37.47 by the time you grow up 00:05:37.50\00:05:38.90 at the age of seven, eight, 00:05:38.93\00:05:40.74 you go through FGM that tells you 00:05:40.77\00:05:43.14 that now you have become a woman, 00:05:43.17\00:05:46.11 you need to be responsible. 00:05:46.14\00:05:47.98 At that point, 00:05:48.01\00:05:50.18 they even start communicating to you, 00:05:50.21\00:05:52.38 "You're not supposed to be the same compound 00:05:52.41\00:05:54.78 with your mother, 00:05:54.82\00:05:56.15 you are now a grown-up person, 00:05:56.18\00:05:58.15 you need to go and start your family." 00:05:58.19\00:06:00.56 So as early as nine. 00:06:00.59\00:06:03.69 It is a traumatizing experience 00:06:03.73\00:06:06.86 because some of them 00:06:06.90\00:06:08.23 go through very difficult situations. 00:06:08.26\00:06:11.03 There are those who after FGM, 00:06:11.07\00:06:14.37 they are not given even time to heal 00:06:14.40\00:06:17.67 and because this fathers 00:06:17.71\00:06:20.11 are eager to get their wealth, 00:06:20.14\00:06:22.28 to get their animals, 00:06:22.31\00:06:23.95 and these other men, 00:06:23.98\00:06:27.42 they just want... 00:06:27.45\00:06:28.78 They don't care, they just want to have women. 00:06:28.82\00:06:31.02 With that imagination or that culture 00:06:49.77\00:06:53.34 and that believe in their community 00:06:53.38\00:06:55.71 that once you have born 00:06:55.74\00:06:57.41 against the will of your father, 00:06:57.45\00:06:59.18 you're cursed. 00:06:59.21\00:07:00.55 So they are those who still live 00:07:00.58\00:07:02.42 with that fear that, 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.65 "Okay, I'm here, but I know, 00:07:04.69\00:07:06.45 I've gotten myself curses." 00:07:06.49\00:07:11.56 After some time, 00:07:11.59\00:07:14.73 I heard that my granddad 00:07:14.76\00:07:17.57 wanted to curse me 00:07:17.60\00:07:19.67 because of running away 00:07:19.70\00:07:23.81 and not to get married. 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.51 But I wasn't even thinking 00:07:25.54\00:07:29.91 about cursing. 00:07:29.94\00:07:31.28 I was just thinking about my education. 00:07:31.31\00:07:34.58 Also, my dad did the same. 00:07:34.62\00:07:36.79 He told her that he want to get life, 00:07:36.82\00:07:41.26 come back, and go 00:07:41.29\00:07:43.39 to your husband's home, 00:07:43.43\00:07:45.59 or unless I'll curse you. 00:07:45.63\00:07:48.10 Most of the time you find that 00:07:48.13\00:07:50.47 automatically the relationship is broken 00:07:50.50\00:07:53.74 because if it is well-known 00:07:53.77\00:07:57.41 that you need to obey your father, 00:07:57.44\00:07:59.54 you need to obey your mother, 00:07:59.57\00:08:01.28 the moment you have gone against their will 00:08:01.31\00:08:03.41 that you are to get married to this man 00:08:03.45\00:08:07.15 and you want to get this number of cows 00:08:07.18\00:08:09.48 to get the family moving 00:08:09.52\00:08:10.99 and you went against that, 00:08:11.02\00:08:12.69 of course, you become like an enemy 00:08:12.72\00:08:15.16 to this community and to the family. 00:08:15.19\00:08:19.26 When my dad first heard that I have ran away, 00:08:19.29\00:08:23.30 he just wanted to kill my mom. 00:08:23.33\00:08:26.63 Same to my uncle, 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.00 first it was my uncle that beat mom 00:08:28.04\00:08:30.81 because he's telling her that she's the one 00:08:30.84\00:08:32.97 who have showed me the way to go. 00:08:33.01\00:08:35.98 My mom was not aware. 00:08:36.01\00:08:38.55 Nobody knew that I could run away 00:08:38.58\00:08:40.88 because I was obedient. 00:08:40.92\00:08:43.18 I was not showing them that I want to go. 00:08:43.22\00:08:45.99 No, I was just quiet... 00:08:46.02\00:08:49.99 My dad hit her because of me, 00:08:50.03\00:08:53.46 and my mom was not aware of that 00:08:53.50\00:08:56.77 I can run away. 00:08:56.80\00:09:00.94 So many people wanted me to die at that age, 00:09:00.97\00:09:03.94 but I trusted in God. 00:09:03.97\00:09:06.31 And I know God is everything. 00:09:06.34\00:09:08.91 Aliza is now 15 years old 00:09:08.94\00:09:11.01 and has lived at the Kajiado Adventist School 00:09:11.05\00:09:13.25 and Rescue Center for the past nine years 00:09:13.28\00:09:15.28 as she receives a Christian education. 00:09:15.32\00:09:17.65 It is her home now along with 160 other girls 00:09:17.69\00:09:20.92 and 45 boys who helped the girls 00:09:20.96\00:09:23.02 develop healthy relationships with males. 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.56 Girls must sleep two to a mattress 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.46 because there isn't enough space. 00:09:28.50\00:09:30.77 The toilets are holes in the ground 00:09:30.80\00:09:32.83 and students must bath in outdoor stalls 00:09:32.87\00:09:35.07 with a bucket. 00:09:35.10\00:09:36.44 The conditions aren't ideal but for many of these girls, 00:09:36.47\00:09:39.31 they cannot return home. 00:09:39.34\00:09:41.44 The decision to run away from FGM and child marriage 00:09:41.48\00:09:44.41 means they are not welcome in their village anymore. 00:09:44.45\00:09:47.22 The first time I went 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.15 I had stayed here like five years 00:09:49.18\00:09:51.99 without seeing my brothers, 00:09:52.02\00:09:53.69 without seeing anybody, no home. 00:09:53.72\00:09:57.29 And I have to go there... 00:09:57.33\00:09:58.69 And everybody was happy 00:10:06.23\00:10:10.11 to see me. 00:10:10.14\00:10:11.67 Everybody was proud of me. 00:10:11.71\00:10:13.48 But it was dad that, 00:10:16.48\00:10:20.48 my dad just came out of the house. 00:10:20.52\00:10:24.72 And that's it. 00:10:24.75\00:10:26.09 And he wanted to beat me 00:10:26.12\00:10:28.39 while I'm holding my little brother. 00:10:28.42\00:10:30.26 But everybody was crying, 00:10:37.73\00:10:40.60 "Please don't beat her, 00:10:40.64\00:10:41.97 let her stay with us, 00:10:42.00\00:10:43.77 we have missed her a lot." 00:10:43.81\00:10:45.14 For most of the girls at the Kajiado Adventist School 00:10:49.04\00:10:51.48 and Rescue Center, the connection 00:10:51.51\00:10:53.01 to their childhood home has disappeared. 00:10:53.05\00:10:56.99 They must learn to live without their family. 00:10:57.02\00:10:59.05 The Kajiado center becomes the girl's new home 00:10:59.09\00:11:01.79 and Principal Sarah Daniel becomes a mother figure. 00:11:01.82\00:11:06.26 Sarah is just amazing. 00:11:06.29\00:11:07.63 I mean, when you meet her, you interact with her, 00:11:07.66\00:11:10.40 you know that here is a lady 00:11:10.43\00:11:11.77 who's passionate of what she's doing. 00:11:11.80\00:11:13.13 She actually cares for the girls. 00:11:13.17\00:11:15.10 She is, you know, hardworking. 00:11:15.14\00:11:17.27 She's always on the go, 00:11:17.31\00:11:18.81 you know, she cares for the girls 00:11:18.84\00:11:20.84 because you can see the girls actually love her a lot. 00:11:20.88\00:11:23.35 It is not artificial. 00:11:23.38\00:11:24.71 It's not something because volunteers are here 00:11:24.75\00:11:26.31 or I'm there or somebody from the conferences has come 00:11:26.35\00:11:27.85 that she does this. 00:11:27.88\00:11:29.22 She actually does this day in and day out. 00:11:29.25\00:11:30.59 And she's very charismatic, you know? 00:11:30.62\00:11:32.02 She is full of energy and she wants a better life 00:11:32.05\00:11:35.12 for these girls, you know? 00:11:35.16\00:11:36.49 And when we go... 00:11:36.52\00:11:37.86 As you see her she actually goes out 00:11:37.89\00:11:39.26 and sees it there are girls that have been married off 00:11:39.29\00:11:41.63 or, you know, are going through FGM, 00:11:41.66\00:11:43.00 and she actually goes there and rescues them 00:11:43.03\00:11:44.37 and brings them back. 00:11:44.40\00:11:45.73 You can see her heart really feels for these girls. 00:11:45.77\00:11:47.94 She was like a mom to us, you know, 00:11:47.97\00:11:50.37 when we go Kajiado, that's home 00:11:50.41\00:11:53.27 and people there are our sisters, our brothers, 00:11:53.31\00:11:56.31 and our moms, and our dads. 00:11:56.34\00:11:58.71 So Madam Sarah was just a cool mother. 00:11:58.75\00:12:01.25 Though the Kajiado students become family, 00:12:01.28\00:12:03.52 Sarah knows that deep down 00:12:03.55\00:12:05.12 children still want to be accepted by their birth family. 00:12:05.15\00:12:08.42 From time to time, she attempts to facilitate 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.73 reconciliation for certain girls 00:12:10.76\00:12:12.93 if the family is agreeable. 00:12:12.96\00:12:15.76 And let me tell you for these girls, 00:12:15.80\00:12:18.80 when they get that opportunity 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.84 to see that to their father 00:12:20.87\00:12:22.30 can even just tuck their heads 00:12:22.34\00:12:25.84 because that is their sign of greetings, 00:12:25.87\00:12:28.51 you could not imagine the happiness they do have. 00:12:28.54\00:12:31.95 Even if someone who will feel, "I'm not still safe to be here 00:12:31.98\00:12:35.58 but at least my father has shown me that 00:12:35.62\00:12:39.82 I can still continue to be called his daughter." 00:12:39.85\00:12:44.49 When we come back, Aliza returns to the village 00:12:44.53\00:12:47.23 she once ran away from. 00:12:47.26\00:12:48.60 Anyone can build a church. 00:13:10.65\00:13:12.32 Simply give just $10 each month and your donation 00:13:12.35\00:13:16.12 along with thousands of others 00:13:16.16\00:13:17.83 will find a new place of worship every month. 00:13:17.86\00:13:22.26 The potential for change is all around you. 00:13:22.30\00:13:25.60 All you have to do is look. 00:13:25.63\00:13:27.40 Aliza's first visit back to her village did not go well. 00:13:40.82\00:13:44.22 Since then, Aliza has tried to keep the relationship 00:13:44.25\00:13:46.65 with her father alive by visiting again. 00:13:46.69\00:13:49.12 As her father observes the knowledge 00:13:49.16\00:13:50.86 she is gaining in school, 00:13:50.89\00:13:52.23 he realizes the value of her education. 00:13:52.26\00:13:55.26 A recent visit showed that her father has experienced 00:13:55.30\00:13:57.90 a complete change of heart 00:13:57.93\00:13:59.67 and he's proud of Aliza. 00:13:59.70\00:14:01.70 While filming in Aliza's old village, 00:14:40.61\00:14:42.64 the Maranatha Mission Stories crew received word 00:14:42.68\00:14:44.71 that a young girl, a cousin of Aliza 00:14:44.75\00:14:46.82 had been brought to this village 00:14:46.85\00:14:48.18 to undergo FGM. 00:14:48.22\00:14:50.19 She was crying and distraught. 00:14:50.22\00:14:53.69 While we were there, 00:14:53.72\00:14:55.06 Sarah came to know about this child that was... 00:14:55.09\00:14:57.29 She's only nine years old, 00:14:57.33\00:14:58.66 I think, and she was sent to her grandmother's house 00:14:58.69\00:15:01.53 for FGM 00:15:01.56\00:15:02.90 and Sarah was asking around that, 00:15:02.93\00:15:05.40 "Why are you not in school? 00:15:05.43\00:15:06.77 Why are you not in school?" 00:15:06.80\00:15:08.30 And I learned she cannot communicate. 00:15:08.34\00:15:10.74 So I thought she has never gone to school. 00:15:10.77\00:15:13.41 So after I followed up, I've realized, 00:15:13.44\00:15:15.51 booking has already been done. 00:15:15.54\00:15:17.21 So she was waiting for FGM 00:15:17.25\00:15:19.25 so that she can get married of. 00:15:19.28\00:15:22.82 This girl is here for FGM 00:15:22.85\00:15:24.19 and she's already been given off for marriage 00:15:24.22\00:15:26.76 and then, you know, Sarah just, bang, went in and said, 00:15:26.79\00:15:29.22 "I'm taking this girl back with me." 00:15:29.26\00:15:31.79 But when I talked, she told me, yes, 00:15:31.83\00:15:33.73 she's willing to go to school 00:15:33.76\00:15:35.76 but nobody is ready to take her to school. 00:15:35.80\00:15:38.03 Yeah. 00:15:38.07\00:15:39.40 So I've told I would go with her. 00:15:39.43\00:15:43.04 So it's good we came on a school day, 00:15:43.07\00:15:45.57 we're able to identify. 00:15:45.61\00:15:48.28 After consulting with Aliza's father, 00:15:48.31\00:15:50.48 the village elder, it was agreed that Sarah 00:15:50.51\00:15:52.51 would take the girl named Malaton 00:15:52.55\00:15:54.75 back to the Kajaido center. 00:15:54.78\00:15:56.65 Aliza's father also asked that they take his young son, 00:15:56.69\00:15:59.62 Aliza's brother, as they couldn't afford 00:15:59.65\00:16:01.76 to send him to school. 00:16:01.79\00:16:03.49 Though the center's capacity to take more children 00:16:03.53\00:16:05.73 is stretched to its limits, 00:16:05.76\00:16:07.13 Sarah agreed to take the boy named Edgar. 00:16:07.16\00:16:10.03 The village sent the children off 00:16:10.07\00:16:11.40 with a song and the two begin a journey into a new life. 00:16:11.43\00:16:14.74 I was so, so, so happy. 00:16:20.78\00:16:22.71 So happy. 00:16:22.74\00:16:24.28 In fact, that time I saw them 00:16:24.31\00:16:27.55 coming to get inside 00:16:27.58\00:16:29.28 that car going to education, 00:16:29.32\00:16:30.85 I felt tears of, just like water. 00:16:30.89\00:16:35.02 I was even just like that, just really crying. 00:16:35.06\00:16:38.33 The crew drove back to Kajaido with Aliza's brother Edgar 00:16:41.40\00:16:44.43 and cousin Malaton, family, 00:16:44.47\00:16:46.03 she never expected to live with again. 00:16:46.07\00:16:48.84 The children began the school's intake process 00:16:48.87\00:16:51.17 and transitioning to life at the Kajiado Center. 00:16:51.21\00:16:55.34 The first thing that we need to do with this girl comes in 00:16:55.38\00:16:58.41 when you go to wash, 00:16:58.45\00:17:00.72 you need some clothes to change. 00:17:00.75\00:17:03.15 Maybe there is a girl who has two or three dresses 00:17:03.18\00:17:06.02 that you can borrow, 00:17:06.05\00:17:07.39 but you can't borrow the inner wears. 00:17:07.42\00:17:09.09 So all the time, I have to make sure that 00:17:09.12\00:17:11.66 I should be able to get like the inner clothes 00:17:11.69\00:17:14.93 for this girl to be able to put on. 00:17:14.96\00:17:17.43 Then at that time, 00:17:17.47\00:17:18.80 there's also other essentials 00:17:18.83\00:17:20.44 like soap, a basin... 00:17:20.47\00:17:23.00 And sometimes they come 00:17:23.04\00:17:24.37 when we are not able to do that. 00:17:24.41\00:17:25.74 But we have to even 00:17:25.77\00:17:27.11 if I have to go out and borrow 00:17:27.14\00:17:28.51 because this person is just looking at me 00:17:28.54\00:17:30.85 as the hope at that point. 00:17:30.88\00:17:33.05 We also take time, 00:17:36.65\00:17:38.22 visit the children office department 00:17:38.25\00:17:40.89 because they also need to get us some document 00:17:40.92\00:17:43.86 for us to file 00:17:43.89\00:17:45.23 and to ensure nobody can threaten us 00:17:45.26\00:17:47.70 of stealing their children 00:17:47.73\00:17:50.07 because the children office is also aware. 00:17:50.10\00:17:52.53 The other thing we now want to take them 00:17:52.57\00:17:54.14 for medical checkup, 00:17:54.17\00:17:56.07 which is also a bit expensive. 00:17:56.10\00:17:59.14 When we got to the hospital, they would not say, 00:17:59.17\00:18:00.81 "Oh, this one is a rescue. 00:18:00.84\00:18:02.51 It's free." 00:18:02.54\00:18:04.25 We have to pay 00:18:04.28\00:18:05.61 what the other people are paying. 00:18:05.65\00:18:08.82 Some of them because they have never gone to school, 00:18:08.85\00:18:12.09 they are not even able to communicate 00:18:12.12\00:18:14.06 in another language apart 00:18:14.09\00:18:15.52 from their local language. 00:18:15.56\00:18:17.26 And that is why we normally need 00:18:17.29\00:18:18.99 that like we have some women who are volunteers 00:18:19.03\00:18:22.50 who also come in and even our other guys 00:18:22.53\00:18:25.53 who have gone through this, 00:18:25.57\00:18:27.44 they're also able to help us understand. 00:18:27.47\00:18:29.80 Personally, I do speak the simple ones. 00:18:29.84\00:18:33.01 We can communicate in a simple way, 00:18:33.04\00:18:36.61 but let me say that these children are genius, 00:18:36.64\00:18:39.88 for me, that's what I can call them. 00:18:39.91\00:18:41.92 Because you'll realize once they interact 00:18:41.95\00:18:44.35 with the rest even within a month or two, 00:18:44.39\00:18:46.72 they can speak simple words. 00:18:46.76\00:18:49.62 They can communicate with others. 00:18:49.66\00:18:52.89 Malaton and Edgar went through the school's intake process 00:18:52.93\00:18:55.96 seeing places and things 00:18:56.00\00:18:57.43 they had never experienced before. 00:18:57.47\00:18:59.47 That even they were unpacking new belongings 00:18:59.50\00:19:02.24 into a new home cramped though it is. 00:19:02.27\00:19:04.87 That morning, the girl's life was just normal, 00:19:04.91\00:19:07.24 you know, get up, milk the cows, clean the place, 00:19:07.28\00:19:10.88 just a day to day life that these girls having. 00:19:10.91\00:19:14.12 By afternoon, bang. 00:19:14.15\00:19:15.72 They had their life had been transformed. 00:19:15.75\00:19:17.32 It is complete U-turn 00:19:17.35\00:19:18.69 where they now have a better future, 00:19:18.72\00:19:20.06 they have shot at life. 00:19:20.09\00:19:21.42 And who knows, they could become lawyers 00:19:21.46\00:19:22.79 or doctors or engineers 00:19:22.82\00:19:24.16 and it is so heartening to see 00:19:24.19\00:19:25.53 that happening in front of your eyes, you know? 00:19:25.56\00:19:27.43 Here you are seeing them with torn clothes 00:19:27.46\00:19:29.40 and nose leaking and dirty, 00:19:29.43\00:19:31.43 and by evening they were so smartly dressed and so... 00:19:31.47\00:19:34.24 You could not recognize them. 00:19:34.27\00:19:35.60 And you could not recognize them 00:19:35.64\00:19:36.97 that these are the same kids that we rescued. 00:19:37.01\00:19:39.11 Though they experienced dramatic changes 00:19:39.14\00:19:41.44 in just a day's time, 00:19:41.48\00:19:42.84 Malaton and Edgar smiles show they are happy. 00:19:42.88\00:19:46.11 What is love? 00:19:46.15\00:19:48.28 He loves me. 00:19:48.32\00:19:50.32 As they settled into a new home, 00:19:50.35\00:19:51.95 Sarah was again confronted with the reality 00:19:51.99\00:19:54.02 that they had no room to house them 00:19:54.06\00:19:55.99 and beyond the cramped conditions 00:19:56.02\00:19:57.73 for current students, 00:19:57.76\00:19:59.09 this lack of space prevents the school 00:19:59.13\00:20:00.66 from proactively rescuing many more children. 00:20:00.70\00:20:03.73 I have cases of 46 girls 00:20:03.77\00:20:05.90 who wanted to come in, 00:20:05.93\00:20:07.27 but I don't have the space, honestly. 00:20:07.30\00:20:09.94 I just give promises 00:20:09.97\00:20:11.44 that just give me some more time. 00:20:11.47\00:20:14.58 But in case of any danger, please consult us, 00:20:14.61\00:20:17.88 let us know 00:20:17.91\00:20:19.25 but we don't have this place. 00:20:19.28\00:20:21.35 When we get back, hear the success stories 00:20:21.38\00:20:23.49 of three former students 00:20:23.52\00:20:25.15 and learn what Maranatha is doing 00:20:25.19\00:20:26.82 to help the Kajiado School's lack of space. 00:20:26.86\00:20:29.52 In less than two months, 00:20:41.60\00:20:43.24 Maranatha will have our annual Mission Maranatha weekend, 00:20:43.27\00:20:46.54 September 19 to 21 in Northern California. 00:20:46.57\00:20:50.15 In honor of our 50th anniversary, 00:20:50.18\00:20:52.31 we're offering three projects in the area 00:20:52.35\00:20:54.65 prior to the convention 00:20:54.68\00:20:56.28 and a special anniversary dinner on September 19. 00:20:56.32\00:20:59.75 First up, we need volunteers to help with tasks 00:20:59.79\00:21:02.69 at Pacific Union College from August 19 to September 6. 00:21:02.72\00:21:06.83 Come enjoy the beauty of the Napa Valley 00:21:06.86\00:21:09.33 while renovating Newton Hall, 00:21:09.36\00:21:10.93 PUC men's dormitory. 00:21:10.97\00:21:13.20 After PUC, you can head on over to a project 00:21:13.23\00:21:16.00 at Leoni Meadows Camp or Rio Lindo Academy. 00:21:16.04\00:21:19.27 From September 8 to 19, 00:21:19.31\00:21:21.11 you're invited to help with painting, 00:21:21.14\00:21:23.08 construction, landscaping, 00:21:23.11\00:21:24.88 and more at either of those locations. 00:21:24.91\00:21:27.78 All of these projects and the dinner are free of cost 00:21:27.82\00:21:31.02 with your registration. 00:21:31.05\00:21:32.85 Learn more about these opportunities 00:21:32.89\00:21:34.82 and others by going to our website 00:21:34.86\00:21:37.33 at maranatha.org. 00:21:37.36\00:21:39.09 Though the conditions at the Kajiado Adventist School 00:21:45.40\00:21:48.07 and Rescue Center are inadequate, 00:21:48.10\00:21:49.80 it is here that students receive a solid foundation 00:21:49.84\00:21:52.37 upon which to build a future. 00:21:52.41\00:21:54.84 Some girls learn a skill trade like tailoring, 00:21:54.88\00:21:58.31 others eventually pursue a college education. 00:21:58.35\00:22:01.98 Josephine Metian Raita earned a degree in education 00:22:02.02\00:22:05.35 and now teaches at a local primary school. 00:22:05.39\00:22:09.39 I spent my life there never going home. 00:22:09.42\00:22:12.39 All of primary, I finished. 00:22:12.43\00:22:14.30 Secondary I went without even single day going back home. 00:22:14.33\00:22:18.30 We've been given somewhere to sleep, 00:22:18.33\00:22:20.67 you have been given education and... 00:22:20.70\00:22:24.57 You have been given, nurtured spiritually 00:22:24.61\00:22:27.74 because we always had good times 00:22:27.78\00:22:29.61 during the Saturday, 00:22:29.64\00:22:31.18 we go to church, we worship, 00:22:31.21\00:22:32.88 and we learn a lot about 00:22:32.91\00:22:35.55 good things. 00:22:35.58\00:22:37.75 I had that passion long time ago 00:22:37.79\00:22:40.06 because I always admire 00:22:40.09\00:22:41.92 teachers when teaching in class 00:22:41.96\00:22:44.33 and nurturing those kids 00:22:44.36\00:22:45.83 because I always see that it's very, 00:22:45.86\00:22:48.96 I think it's the best profession 00:22:49.00\00:22:50.83 because you bring someone 00:22:50.87\00:22:53.13 from knowing nothing to be someone 00:22:53.17\00:22:56.24 very useful in the society. 00:22:56.27\00:22:58.24 So long ago when I'm in primary school, 00:22:58.27\00:23:01.74 I always admired to be a teacher at least 00:23:01.78\00:23:04.01 to make someone to be like me 00:23:04.05\00:23:06.35 and let someone know something that never knew. 00:23:06.38\00:23:09.68 Tracy Risncho is finishing her journalism degree 00:23:09.72\00:23:12.45 at a university in the capital city of Nairobi 00:23:12.49\00:23:15.02 and credits her experience at the Kajiado School 00:23:15.06\00:23:17.56 for setting her on a path to success. 00:23:17.59\00:23:20.06 I really studied hard because in my mind 00:23:20.10\00:23:23.03 I knew that coming from such a poor weird background, 00:23:23.06\00:23:27.90 and I really have to try my best 00:23:27.94\00:23:30.11 so that I can put myself in a better level tomorrow. 00:23:30.14\00:23:33.14 So I really tried, it really raised me up so well. 00:23:33.17\00:23:36.88 As I continued, I was a head girl, 00:23:36.91\00:23:39.05 an assistant head girl, and it really helped me, 00:23:39.08\00:23:41.02 the responsibilities helped me at least to grow, 00:23:41.05\00:23:43.59 know myself, 00:23:43.62\00:23:44.95 know how I should handle others, 00:23:44.99\00:23:46.32 know how I should talk to people, 00:23:46.35\00:23:47.92 know about how I can control my thoughts 00:23:47.96\00:23:50.13 when I am with other people, how I should talk to them. 00:23:50.16\00:23:52.76 Yeah, it's really helped. 00:23:52.79\00:23:55.03 Kajiado really helped me 00:23:55.06\00:23:56.40 because if it wasn't for Kajiado 00:23:56.43\00:23:57.77 maybe I wouldn't be here. 00:23:57.80\00:23:59.17 God is everything because God brought me 00:23:59.20\00:24:01.97 from the village to Kajiado to high school 00:24:02.00\00:24:05.51 I have not been a failing... 00:24:05.54\00:24:07.54 I've not been a failure. 00:24:07.58\00:24:09.61 I think I'm chosen. 00:24:09.64\00:24:12.21 And I'm the hope for my home 00:24:12.25\00:24:14.58 and the village and Kajiado, yes. 00:24:14.62\00:24:18.49 Because I believe when maybe I get money later, 00:24:18.52\00:24:21.46 I will still go back to Kajiado and help the girls there. 00:24:21.49\00:24:26.23 I know I'll be a successful person... 00:24:26.26\00:24:31.07 And really inspired like I really want to give back. 00:24:31.10\00:24:35.40 When I'm here in school, I think about that 00:24:35.44\00:24:37.64 and I struggled so much like I really tried to study hard 00:24:37.67\00:24:42.14 so that when I get at least a good job, 00:24:42.18\00:24:44.08 I can help the center. 00:24:44.11\00:24:45.55 Okay like the school is maybe 00:24:45.58\00:24:48.12 a bit congested that they know... 00:24:48.15\00:24:49.52 Okay, I've been this some other 00:24:49.55\00:24:50.89 these back I saw like, okay, kid... 00:24:50.92\00:24:55.86 So at least when you build a dormitory that is so nice. 00:24:55.89\00:24:58.99 They're not going to be congested 00:24:59.03\00:25:00.73 and it's so beautiful. 00:25:00.76\00:25:03.23 And then what happens is that 00:25:03.26\00:25:05.33 the girls who have graduated and gone to high school 00:25:05.37\00:25:07.70 or to college or university, they all come back 00:25:07.74\00:25:09.50 when there is a vacation, 00:25:09.54\00:25:11.04 you know, when there is a break, 00:25:11.07\00:25:12.41 they have no home. 00:25:12.44\00:25:13.78 Once these girls leave their homes, 00:25:13.81\00:25:15.14 they run away from their home or their rescue, 00:25:15.18\00:25:16.58 they have no place to go back. 00:25:16.61\00:25:18.11 So the home is Kajiado Girls Rescue Center. 00:25:18.15\00:25:20.35 And all of them come in 00:25:20.38\00:25:21.72 and that time it really, really gets crowded 00:25:21.75\00:25:23.08 because, you know, 00:25:23.12\00:25:24.45 you have the girls who are in high school, 00:25:24.49\00:25:25.82 you have the girls who are in college and university, 00:25:25.85\00:25:27.19 plus the kids who are there. 00:25:27.22\00:25:28.56 And at times, it's barely 00:25:28.59\00:25:30.26 you cannot even move in the dorm 00:25:30.29\00:25:31.63 without banging or bashing to somebody, 00:25:31.66\00:25:32.99 you know, because it's so crowded, 00:25:33.03\00:25:34.36 there's so many girls. 00:25:34.40\00:25:36.13 You'd normally always, 00:25:36.16\00:25:37.80 you know, touch somebody or hit somebody 00:25:37.83\00:25:39.17 because there's no space 00:25:39.20\00:25:40.54 and, you know, the bathrooms are, 00:25:40.57\00:25:42.54 I mean, bad. 00:25:42.57\00:25:44.37 I mean, there's no bathroom, 00:25:44.41\00:25:46.21 you know, there's no showers. 00:25:46.24\00:25:47.58 The showers are all broken down. 00:25:47.61\00:25:48.94 There's no shower, it's a bucket 00:25:48.98\00:25:50.31 with scoop and, you know, 00:25:50.35\00:25:51.68 the conditions are horrible, horrible for these girls. 00:25:51.71\00:25:53.65 In 2018, Maranatha agreed to provide the Kajiado School 00:25:53.68\00:25:57.79 with a number of new structures, 00:25:57.82\00:25:59.45 including two new girl's dorms with showers and toilets, 00:25:59.49\00:26:02.92 a boy's dorm, and an administrative office. 00:26:02.96\00:26:05.69 Funding is needed for these new buildings 00:26:05.73\00:26:07.66 that will not only improve living conditions 00:26:07.70\00:26:09.76 for current students, 00:26:09.80\00:26:11.13 but allow the center of the space 00:26:11.17\00:26:12.50 to rescue more girls. 00:26:12.53\00:26:15.04 We are so excited. 00:26:15.07\00:26:17.64 We really thank God. 00:26:17.67\00:26:20.28 It's a time that we can say 00:26:20.31\00:26:21.84 we have seen God 00:26:21.88\00:26:23.71 in our life and in our institution 00:26:23.75\00:26:26.15 because the work they are doing in our center 00:26:26.18\00:26:29.58 honestly, 00:26:29.62\00:26:31.52 it touches so many lives. 00:26:31.55\00:26:34.62 You know, no kid should go to this, 00:26:34.66\00:26:36.02 you know, no child should go through this 00:26:36.06\00:26:38.16 and here is an opportunity as a volunteer 00:26:38.19\00:26:39.89 you come and help build these dorms, 00:26:39.93\00:26:41.53 these classrooms, these offices, 00:26:41.56\00:26:43.90 to interact with them, get to know them, 00:26:43.93\00:26:45.57 guide them, help them as donors. 00:26:45.60\00:26:47.90 I mean, you know, if you build these dorms, 00:26:47.94\00:26:50.04 these classrooms, 00:26:50.07\00:26:51.51 whatever is needed on the campus, 00:26:51.54\00:26:53.48 it will definitely change their lives. 00:26:53.51\00:26:55.18 Maranatha is beginning the work of providing 00:26:55.21\00:26:57.68 the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center 00:26:57.71\00:27:00.18 with adequate facilities, but we need your help. 00:27:00.22\00:27:03.25 Funding is needed for these new buildings 00:27:03.28\00:27:05.15 that will not only improve living conditions 00:27:05.19\00:27:07.46 for current students, 00:27:07.49\00:27:08.82 but allow the center of the space 00:27:08.86\00:27:10.33 to rescue more girls. 00:27:10.36\00:27:12.39 With your help, the Kajiado Adventist School 00:27:12.43\00:27:14.90 and Rescue Center can be a safe haven 00:27:14.93\00:27:17.17 for even more children. 00:27:17.20\00:27:18.87 Give a gift to support 00:27:18.90\00:27:20.27 Maranatha's work on this campus. 00:27:20.30\00:27:22.50 Your support will provide these children 00:27:22.54\00:27:24.87 with the opportunity for a bright future. 00:27:24.91\00:27:27.58 I now feel myself as a potential doctor 00:27:27.61\00:27:30.21 to improve the health conditions 00:27:30.25\00:27:31.58 of my people. 00:27:31.61\00:27:32.95 A potential lawyer, to advocate for the girl child's education. 00:27:32.98\00:27:37.19 Give us an opportunity. 00:27:37.22\00:27:40.12 Take charge, work diligently. 00:27:40.16\00:27:42.49 Make a change for a better future. 00:27:42.52\00:27:44.03 Make a change for a better future. 00:27:44.06\00:27:45.86 Make a change for a better future. 00:27:45.89\00:27:47.40
