Hello, this is the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.02 Last week the Dominican Republic 00:00:03.05\00:00:04.87 welcomed a burst of energy in the form of team volunteers. 00:00:04.90\00:00:08.79 Approximately 300 alternate workout participants 00:00:08.82\00:00:11.64 began arriving in the country last week 00:00:11.67\00:00:13.79 to build churches and classrooms in Barahona. 00:00:13.82\00:00:16.57 This is the 24th year of these teenagers only mission trip 00:00:16.60\00:00:20.45 and it's the largest Ultimate Workout till date. 00:00:20.48\00:00:22.92 The teen trip came on the heels of 00:00:22.95\00:00:24.69 another Dominican Republic project, 00:00:24.72\00:00:26.68 the annual summer family project wrapped up 00:00:26.71\00:00:29.05 just days before Ultimate Workout leadership arrived. 00:00:29.08\00:00:32.24 This team of a 112 volunteers built three one day churches 00:00:32.27\00:00:35.87 in the suburbs of Santo Domingo. 00:00:35.90\00:00:38.19 Keep up with what's happening on the Ultimate Workout, 00:00:38.22\00:00:40.47 the family project and other trips 00:00:40.50\00:00:42.44 by going to our Maranatha Facebook page. 00:00:42.47\00:00:44.95 We'll post photos and updates 00:00:44.98\00:00:46.80 from project sites around the world. 00:00:46.83\00:00:48.93 Go to Maranatha.org/facebook. 00:00:48.96\00:00:52.35 Coming up, learn why a small group of parents 00:00:52.38\00:00:54.65 have permission to be part of teenagers only mission trip 00:00:54.68\00:00:57.75 and what they learned from the experience. 00:00:57.78\00:01:00.04 This is Ultimate Workout, Tumbaco, Ecuador. 00:01:17.66\00:01:20.95 And one of the things I'd like you to notice 00:01:20.98\00:01:22.54 is how the kids are the ones doing the work. 00:01:22.57\00:01:24.95 Most of the time it's almost impossible 00:01:24.98\00:01:27.26 to find any adults around here 00:01:27.29\00:01:28.83 because the kids are actually building walls 00:01:28.86\00:01:31.33 and doing important things, 00:01:31.36\00:01:32.51 it's impossible they ever going to take a break. 00:01:32.54\00:01:35.64 But every once in a while you run into the elders. 00:01:35.67\00:01:39.19 You guys still alive? Barely. 00:01:39.22\00:01:41.21 Barely. Barely, I'm hanging on. 00:01:41.24\00:01:45.00 If I didn't have Gary here to hold me up 00:01:45.03\00:01:46.94 I'm don't know what would happen. 00:01:46.97\00:01:48.12 Kindly give me your interruption. 00:01:48.15\00:01:49.54 Oh, man, look at this, ice cream. 00:01:49.57\00:01:52.73 This show is about old people on Ultimate Workout. 00:01:52.76\00:02:00.09 Over the past 23 years the Ultimate Workout 00:02:00.12\00:02:03.57 has evolved to be one of Maranatha's 00:02:03.60\00:02:05.71 most popular and epic mission adventures. 00:02:05.74\00:02:09.21 How could a project designed 00:02:09.24\00:02:11.63 exclusively for teenagers be anything less. 00:02:11.66\00:02:15.43 Only its not just teenagers on the trip, 00:02:15.46\00:02:18.58 there are handful of special grown-ups 00:02:18.61\00:02:20.80 who are granted access and they willingly trade 00:02:20.83\00:02:23.83 the comforts of home for a tent and concrete floor. 00:02:23.86\00:02:27.94 I don't like camping, I don't like solo shower, 00:02:27.97\00:02:30.36 I don't like the cold, 00:02:30.39\00:02:31.70 let's see what else do I not like. 00:02:31.73\00:02:34.12 But I love the ministry. 00:02:34.15\00:02:37.45 Loretta is a writer and mother of five. 00:02:37.48\00:02:40.42 In 2003 she went on Ultimate Workout 13 00:02:40.45\00:02:44.25 as a correspondent for Inside Magazine. 00:02:44.28\00:02:47.48 She was impressed by the program 00:02:47.51\00:02:49.21 and the teens who served. 00:02:49.24\00:02:50.95 She became one of the Ultimate Workout leaders 00:02:50.98\00:02:53.68 and she's been back year after year. 00:02:53.71\00:02:56.35 My love of the ministry is great enough 00:02:56.38\00:03:00.03 to cancel my dislike for all of those other things. 00:03:00.06\00:03:04.89 So, that's why I love Ultimate Workout. 00:03:04.92\00:03:07.13 The Ultimate Workout is an annual mission trip 00:03:07.16\00:03:10.24 designed to mentally and spiritually transform teenagers 00:03:10.27\00:03:14.09 by pushing them out of their comfort zones 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.33 and into the mission field. 00:03:16.36\00:03:18.59 For two weeks volunteers are asked to negotiate life 00:03:18.62\00:03:21.65 in a new culture with new friends. 00:03:21.68\00:03:25.08 Guiding this process are a few dozen adult leaders. 00:03:25.11\00:03:28.62 They are carefully selected 00:03:28.65\00:03:30.42 based on their passion for missions 00:03:30.45\00:03:32.57 and most importantly for their commitment 00:03:32.60\00:03:34.96 to the spiritual development of teenagers. 00:03:34.99\00:03:37.95 Steve Williams has recently coordinated 00:03:37.98\00:03:40.58 Ultimate Workout to medical outrage. 00:03:40.61\00:03:43.10 But his involvement in this mission experience 00:03:43.13\00:03:45.16 stretches back more than 20 years. 00:03:45.19\00:03:47.57 These young people who are interested in serving 00:03:47.60\00:03:52.97 and even if initially they are not interested 00:03:53.00\00:03:54.63 in serving their transmission 00:03:54.66\00:03:57.12 there is a spiritually transforming experience 00:03:57.15\00:03:59.82 and they come back and they, they participate. 00:03:59.85\00:04:03.30 But what keeps me come back is the kids, 00:04:03.33\00:04:06.66 I love them, every one of them. 00:04:06.69\00:04:11.21 We have so much that we don't do for a teens back at home. 00:04:11.24\00:04:18.02 We don't give them leadership roles, 00:04:18.05\00:04:20.49 we don't let them grow, we look at the way they dress, 00:04:20.52\00:04:23.68 we look at the way they act 00:04:23.71\00:04:25.65 and think that they should be more mature, 00:04:25.68\00:04:28.40 should have different dress you know, 00:04:28.43\00:04:30.69 should not wear make up 00:04:30.72\00:04:31.75 should have this much nail polish on 00:04:31.78\00:04:33.87 but that's really not what's important. 00:04:33.90\00:04:35.84 What's important is where their heart is 00:04:35.87\00:04:38.54 and what I saw with this was 00:04:38.57\00:04:40.54 it helped to connect hearts with God. 00:04:40.57\00:04:44.23 And if we don't give them that opportunity 00:04:44.26\00:04:46.46 where do they get it. 00:04:46.49\00:04:48.30 A young lady told me the other day that 00:04:48.33\00:04:50.74 because she's been called out and pulled out to be a leader 00:04:50.77\00:04:54.26 on here on this Ultimate Workout 00:04:54.29\00:04:56.91 they should take that and transfer and go home 00:04:56.94\00:04:59.66 because she says, I don't even know construction 00:04:59.69\00:05:01.52 and if I can be a leader on a construction site 00:05:01.55\00:05:03.53 surely I can be a leader for the youth in my church. 00:05:03.56\00:05:06.67 So, I think that's what it's about just training them 00:05:06.70\00:05:10.30 and helping them to become better leaders, 00:05:10.33\00:05:13.98 to be willing to lead their peers 00:05:14.01\00:05:15.63 and to lead others as their lives continue. 00:05:15.66\00:05:19.83 The leaders work with the team volunteers 00:05:19.86\00:05:22.06 on the construction site, 00:05:22.09\00:05:23.74 medical clinics and during outrage ministries. 00:05:23.77\00:05:27.33 The interaction gives the adults opportunities 00:05:27.36\00:05:30.17 to mentor the teams, 00:05:30.20\00:05:31.84 a task that can feel intimidating at first. 00:05:31.87\00:05:36.46 I love children 00:05:36.49\00:05:37.89 and I work with the younger children in Sabbath school 00:05:37.92\00:05:41.23 and I just-- but teens were different story to me, 00:05:41.26\00:05:44.99 so last year was a big challenge 00:05:45.02\00:05:47.58 whether I would be able to be like teens. 00:05:47.61\00:05:51.11 They just love to be into their group 00:05:51.14\00:05:53.95 made me part of their group 00:05:53.98\00:05:56.17 and that was no issue with me at all. 00:05:56.20\00:05:59.10 I tried to build relationships 00:05:59.13\00:06:00.71 by just taking kids where they are, 00:06:00.74\00:06:03.37 in helping that they'll do the same with me. 00:06:03.40\00:06:05.72 A lot of kids have been through experiences that 00:06:05.75\00:06:08.29 at their ages, you know, it's really surprising. 00:06:08.32\00:06:11.20 Sometimes it's really sad, and yeah they don't need 00:06:11.23\00:06:16.08 our judgments and they don't need-- 00:06:16.11\00:06:19.10 sometimes they don't even need our counsel they need our ears. 00:06:19.13\00:06:22.32 You know our listening and our openness 00:06:22.35\00:06:24.83 to see what they can be and to see what they are, 00:06:24.86\00:06:29.30 what they want to be 00:06:29.33\00:06:30.37 and what they want out of this experience? 00:06:30.40\00:06:32.66 Sometimes they don't know what they want 00:06:32.69\00:06:33.94 out of their experience you know, 00:06:33.97\00:06:35.15 and they don't know why they are here 00:06:35.18\00:06:37.15 but I find and just trying to take them where they are 00:06:37.18\00:06:41.00 and to see them for the people that they are 00:06:41.03\00:06:43.70 and what they can be that you know, 00:06:43.73\00:06:46.11 its just kind of growth 00:06:46.14\00:06:47.51 and by the end at least based on my first experience 00:06:47.54\00:06:51.17 I didn't wanted to end 00:06:51.20\00:06:52.27 and I could see many cases they didn't either 00:06:52.30\00:06:54.55 because we found a place that safe 00:06:54.58\00:06:57.97 and they kind of get a sense that cares about them 00:06:58.00\00:07:02.49 just as they are. 00:07:02.52\00:07:04.75 Mark is an emergency medical technician. 00:07:04.78\00:07:07.77 Both his kids have been on Ultimate Workout 00:07:07.80\00:07:10.54 and he has served as a leader for two years. 00:07:10.57\00:07:13.60 He says he returns because of the connection with the teens. 00:07:13.63\00:07:17.25 But he and the other leaders admit there is more 00:07:17.28\00:07:20.42 to why they return year after year. 00:07:20.45\00:07:22.93 I personally needed it spiritually to be here 00:07:22.96\00:07:26.60 and to be able to be focused on something, 00:07:26.63\00:07:28.56 some what else than other folks 00:07:28.59\00:07:30.81 and something than just work all the time. 00:07:30.84\00:07:33.21 So I'm very grateful to have been here. 00:07:33.24\00:07:36.60 Who gets more out of this experience 00:07:36.63\00:07:38.58 is the real hard one to pen down 00:07:38.61\00:07:40.28 because I know its something that is really worrying for me 00:07:40.31\00:07:44.25 and I continue to grow spiritually 00:07:44.28\00:07:46.22 and learn different ways of connecting 00:07:46.25\00:07:51.07 with different kids and their personalities 00:07:51.10\00:07:54.07 but I think it's a two way street, 00:07:54.10\00:07:57.14 I mean, God definitely works 00:07:57.17\00:07:58.64 on both the young people and the adults. 00:07:58.67\00:08:01.71 After all no matter whom it's designed for 00:08:01.74\00:08:04.30 the Ultimate Workout is ultimately a mission trip. 00:08:04.33\00:08:08.04 And missions have a way of changing people. 00:08:08.07\00:08:11.53 It's fulfilling and it's true that I do this 00:08:11.56\00:08:14.43 because it's great for the kids, 00:08:14.46\00:08:15.94 it's spiritually transforming for the kids 00:08:15.97\00:08:18.18 but the other thing is added to little selfish 00:08:18.21\00:08:20.43 and its spiritually transforming for me 00:08:20.46\00:08:22.53 and it just helps me to get my perspective in line. 00:08:22.56\00:08:25.99 And I see that it does for the participants 00:08:26.02\00:08:28.53 every year, every time 00:08:28.56\00:08:30.23 and so that's why I'm addicted and I can't stop. 00:08:30.26\00:08:36.06 I told a friend online today 00:08:36.09\00:08:37.87 about building a church for just $10. 00:08:37.90\00:08:41.03 He said for just 10 bucks 00:08:41.06\00:08:42.66 I could just buy a couple of smoothies. 00:08:42.69\00:08:45.50 My friend Frank assumed that a $10 church 00:08:45.53\00:08:48.37 had to be a print back building. 00:08:48.40\00:08:51.27 I posted a picture, 00:08:51.30\00:08:52.48 one of these beautiful buildings in Buenos Aires. 00:08:52.51\00:08:55.28 He couldn't believe it. 00:08:55.31\00:08:57.14 Then my bud Jason joined in. 00:08:57.17\00:08:59.72 He's been a member of this club for 10 years. 00:08:59.75\00:09:02.71 He built a church every month somewhere in the world for $10, 00:09:02.74\00:09:06.70 that's 120 churches. 00:09:06.73\00:09:09.90 Tina is also a member. 00:09:09.93\00:09:11.73 We found that by skipping something 00:09:11.76\00:09:13.54 a simple as a soda twice a week 00:09:13.57\00:09:15.81 we can pitch into building a church 00:09:15.84\00:09:18.22 'cause its just $10. 00:09:18.25\00:09:20.76 Go to marantaha.org and see for yourself 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.52 how easy it is to be part of mission. 00:09:23.55\00:09:26.28 Join us, be a member of the $10 church. 00:09:26.31\00:09:30.08 Every once in a while I get to interview somebody 00:09:36.07\00:09:38.20 that's just plain fun because of experiences 00:09:38.23\00:09:40.54 we've had before in our lives, today is one of those. 00:09:40.57\00:09:43.55 Here on Ultimate Workout I want to introduce you to Steve Case 00:09:43.58\00:09:46.91 who is the grandfather of Ultimate Workout. 00:09:46.94\00:09:51.07 Steve, you've been on Ultimate Workouts forever. 00:09:51.10\00:09:54.81 In the process of doing all of this 00:09:54.84\00:09:56.78 I've watched you do three things 00:09:56.81\00:09:58.31 that I want to talk about real quick. 00:09:58.34\00:10:00.03 One of the things I've watched is you lead by leading. 00:10:00.06\00:10:03.53 How do you do that? 00:10:03.56\00:10:05.40 I've a tremendous confidence in the other people 00:10:05.43\00:10:07.21 that are here and for lot of these people 00:10:07.24\00:10:09.58 they've already demonstrated some leadership 00:10:09.61\00:10:12.43 and so to rely on them is really an easy thing to do. 00:10:12.46\00:10:15.89 I've tremendous confidence on the power of God 00:10:15.92\00:10:18.16 in these situations, I believe in young people 00:10:18.19\00:10:21.27 and so we've found that if there's a need some place 00:10:21.30\00:10:24.67 and we expect God to act, 00:10:24.70\00:10:26.41 we expect the participants to step in and do it 00:10:26.44\00:10:29.55 and over and over they do amazing things. 00:10:29.58\00:10:31.88 So that's why my confidence is high. 00:10:31.91\00:10:33.79 Couple days ago I sat with or stood 00:10:33.82\00:10:35.95 with four of the leaders, 00:10:35.98\00:10:37.20 the adult leaders who are doing construction 00:10:37.23\00:10:39.52 and we were way up at the other end of the site 00:10:39.55\00:10:41.55 watching a group of kids work. 00:10:41.58\00:10:43.80 And they were chuckling about how Marge was doing 00:10:43.83\00:10:46.48 and how Fred was doing and look at that, 00:10:46.51\00:10:48.36 watch what's gonna happen now. 00:10:48.39\00:10:49.73 They're gonna have trouble with the mud 00:10:49.76\00:10:51.59 and he's gonna fix it, 00:10:51.62\00:10:52.96 you watch Carl's gonna go down 00:10:52.99\00:10:54.04 and yep, see and Carl gets down 00:10:54.07\00:10:55.40 and goes and solves the problem and what-- Isn't that amazing? 00:10:55.43\00:11:00.47 It absolutely is. It's a miracle. 00:11:00.50\00:11:02.56 But really if you want to look from heavens perspective 00:11:02.59\00:11:06.35 and what adults are doing 00:11:06.38\00:11:08.23 I expect the same kind of conversation is happening. 00:11:08.26\00:11:10.79 Hey Gabriel, watch this. 00:11:10.82\00:11:13.54 Dick Duerksen is gonna try this and then this is gonna happen 00:11:13.57\00:11:15.87 and he's gonna have to do this practice. 00:11:15.90\00:11:17.54 That's why it's gonna be saved by Steve 00:11:17.57\00:11:18.60 coming in from the back coming up. 00:11:18.63\00:11:19.91 Now or an angel or another person 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.39 or your wife or somebody else 00:11:21.42\00:11:22.80 and so I think that happens all the time, 00:11:22.83\00:11:24.51 we just don't expect it to happen with young people 00:11:24.54\00:11:26.83 and I say it's the same the God so why not? 00:11:26.86\00:11:29.01 So why not? 00:11:29.04\00:11:30.07 Also I'm a Seventh-day Adventist 00:11:30.10\00:11:32.60 and so the roots of my particular denominations 00:11:32.63\00:11:35.27 start with young people. 00:11:35.30\00:11:36.47 That's true. 00:11:36.50\00:11:37.53 So I expect young people to be able to take off and lead 00:11:37.56\00:11:40.43 because age is irrelevant to God. 00:11:40.46\00:11:42.44 It doesn't matter how old or old young you are, 00:11:42.47\00:11:45.05 if you have God you got everything. 00:11:45.08\00:11:47.68 Then why is it that so many of us all dudes 00:11:47.71\00:11:50.06 who cross our arms and lean back in our chairs 00:11:50.09\00:11:53.10 and are afraid that somebody is gonna take our chair. 00:11:53.13\00:11:56.09 Well, the reason I do it 00:11:56.12\00:11:57.67 is because I'm afraid somebody will take my chair 00:11:57.70\00:12:00.25 and my chair is all my confidence is in 00:12:00.28\00:12:02.85 and if I give that up what do I have left 00:12:02.88\00:12:05.54 and I think the answer is I only have Jesus. 00:12:05.57\00:12:08.84 And is that enough? 00:12:08.87\00:12:10.25 It's not enough then I'm gonna keep hold of my chair 00:12:10.28\00:12:13.21 and not gonna allow somebody else take it. 00:12:13.24\00:12:14.92 So I should be very comfortable letting my chair go 00:12:14.95\00:12:17.12 because I've already got Christ 00:12:17.15\00:12:18.62 and if somebody else need to sit in my chair, cool. 00:12:18.65\00:12:21.40 If I have Christ then I'm willing 00:12:21.43\00:12:23.57 to give my chair to anybody. 00:12:23.60\00:12:26.29 How do you find adult leadership 00:12:26.32\00:12:27.69 for Ultimate Workout? 00:12:27.72\00:12:28.97 Always on a lookout for that 00:12:29.00\00:12:30.59 and the thing that we're looking for 00:12:30.62\00:12:31.91 there are really two qualities we look for 00:12:31.94\00:12:34.45 in an adult leader for Ultimate Workout. 00:12:34.48\00:12:36.70 Number one, do they love God? 00:12:36.73\00:12:39.27 Number two, do they love young people? 00:12:39.30\00:12:41.70 If they have those two qualities 00:12:41.73\00:12:43.42 that's really all that's needed. 00:12:43.45\00:12:44.83 But you're looking for some skill level. 00:12:44.86\00:12:46.89 Yes, yes I'm looking for skill 00:12:46.92\00:12:49.30 but that would be something like 00:12:49.33\00:12:50.37 somebody who can lay block. 00:12:50.40\00:12:52.52 If I personally lay block they are many who can lay block 00:12:52.55\00:12:55.50 but they may not love God. 00:12:55.53\00:12:58.07 Well, our adult leaders we tell them, 00:12:58.10\00:13:00.55 your primary role on this mission trip 00:13:00.58\00:13:03.58 is to be a mentor for the young people. 00:13:03.61\00:13:06.23 Your primary role is not to lay block 00:13:06.26\00:13:07.88 that's your secondary role. 00:13:07.91\00:13:09.84 So if you like your primary role 00:13:09.87\00:13:11.69 you better go on another project 00:13:11.72\00:13:13.06 where all the counts is laying block 00:13:13.09\00:13:14.71 but we're building people. 00:13:14.74\00:13:16.63 I was talking to Glenda Davidson 00:13:16.66\00:13:17.81 the other day she is the nurse 00:13:17.84\00:13:18.87 on this part of the project here 00:13:18.90\00:13:20.60 and she said that one day she was staying at home 00:13:20.63\00:13:22.86 and she got a phone call and that she was sure 00:13:22.89\00:13:25.21 it was a telemarketer, somebody said, 00:13:25.24\00:13:27.59 hi, I'm Steve Case and I'm working 00:13:27.62\00:13:28.89 and I need you to go to blah, blah, blah, blah, 00:13:28.92\00:13:30.56 and she just listened as you did this long spiel 00:13:30.59\00:13:32.54 as you did this long spiel on the phone 00:13:32.57\00:13:35.55 about something important you know. 00:13:35.58\00:13:37.24 Tell me about Glenda 00:13:37.27\00:13:38.30 and how you recruit people like that? 00:13:38.33\00:13:40.51 We're quite serious in praying every year, 00:13:40.54\00:13:43.24 a very basic prayer and it was like this, 00:13:43.27\00:13:45.64 Lord, please bring the people You want 00:13:45.67\00:13:48.94 and keep away the people You don't want 00:13:48.97\00:13:51.54 and it may not make sense to us at times 00:13:51.57\00:13:53.31 but we're gonna trust You. 00:13:53.34\00:13:54.94 And that's a difficult thing 00:13:54.97\00:13:56.48 when we come down to the nitty gritty 00:13:56.51\00:13:58.03 because we're always recruiting people 00:13:58.06\00:14:00.68 and some we think really should be there and they are not. 00:14:00.71\00:14:03.49 And they don't come. 00:14:03.52\00:14:04.55 And we have to say, God, didn't you hear the prayer? 00:14:04.58\00:14:07.28 This doesn't makes wait. 00:14:07.31\00:14:08.52 No, He says wait, I did hear the prayer. 00:14:08.55\00:14:10.04 Exactly. 00:14:10.07\00:14:11.10 And so then our faith gets tested. 00:14:11.13\00:14:12.92 And then when I called Glenda we had lost a site nurse 00:14:12.95\00:14:17.24 and we were desperate and out of this happens 00:14:17.27\00:14:19.42 every year on some person, 00:14:19.45\00:14:20.83 something comes up and so here we're with two days 00:14:20.86\00:14:23.48 to go or a week to go 00:14:23.51\00:14:24.54 and who, who and so we tried calling 00:14:24.57\00:14:27.27 and they referred us to somebody else, 00:14:27.30\00:14:28.83 I think Glenda was about number three down the line. 00:14:28.86\00:14:30.81 I never heard of her and she never heard of me 00:14:30.84\00:14:32.47 so I called and introduced myself and she said yes. 00:14:32.50\00:14:37.03 And she came and we're just an excellent fit 00:14:37.06\00:14:39.97 and excellent because she loves God, 00:14:40.00\00:14:43.11 she loves young people. 00:14:43.14\00:14:44.33 She has nursing skills that I don't have. 00:14:44.36\00:14:46.13 Right. You know-- 00:14:46.16\00:14:47.31 And she could use those. 00:14:47.34\00:14:48.47 But if she were nurse and didn't love God 00:14:48.50\00:14:50.09 or love young people she wouldn't fit. 00:14:50.12\00:14:52.20 No, no. 00:14:52.23\00:14:53.31 Take me to you and a job you don't have 00:14:53.34\00:14:55.97 and that's you as a Bible teacher 00:14:56.00\00:14:57.85 had a large Adventist academy. 00:14:57.88\00:15:01.51 And you've got a group of kids who love playing basket ball 00:15:01.54\00:15:06.03 with local people who are not church members. 00:15:06.06\00:15:10.32 Would you encourage your students 00:15:10.35\00:15:13.45 and their friends to come on Ultimate Workout and why? 00:15:13.48\00:15:16.58 If you want to go out of your comfort zone 00:15:16.61\00:15:19.00 to get to a situation 00:15:19.03\00:15:20.43 where you have to trust in God 00:15:20.46\00:15:23.42 then this is a golden opportunity. 00:15:23.45\00:15:24.92 Okay. 00:15:24.95\00:15:25.98 But the challenge is we can out ourselves in situations 00:15:26.01\00:15:29.22 back home where we have to trust in God 00:15:29.25\00:15:31.13 but we usually don't. 00:15:31.16\00:15:32.70 We'll be go with what's comfortable, 00:15:32.73\00:15:34.11 with what's familiar and yet young people 00:15:34.14\00:15:36.94 always want something beyond. 00:15:36.97\00:15:38.57 They want some kind of excitement 00:15:38.60\00:15:40.28 and as adults we say, no, no, no, no, 00:15:40.31\00:15:42.10 let's keep it all under control. 00:15:42.13\00:15:44.39 And it's a mirage to say that we are under control, 00:15:44.42\00:15:46.67 we're not under control at all but we risk so little for God 00:15:46.70\00:15:49.98 because we want to hide under this image of control. 00:15:50.01\00:15:53.38 And on a mission trip 00:15:53.41\00:15:54.81 we're dependant on God from day one. 00:15:54.84\00:15:57.24 One more question for you. 00:15:57.27\00:15:59.50 So, you get 60 kids and you come to the site 00:15:59.53\00:16:06.20 and everything's changed, 00:16:06.23\00:16:08.57 all of the plans that you had laid are gone. 00:16:08.60\00:16:11.92 How do you deal with that 00:16:11.95\00:16:13.81 and how does that compare 00:16:13.84\00:16:16.16 with what Jesus did with His disciples? 00:16:16.19\00:16:19.29 Yeah. 00:16:19.32\00:16:21.19 We jokingly say that one of these years in Ultimate Workout 00:16:21.22\00:16:24.90 we're just gonna name a country. 00:16:24.93\00:16:28.11 Give it at least a city, okay or at least a part. 00:16:28.14\00:16:30.51 Some place where the plane to land. 00:16:30.54\00:16:31.57 Give it a GPS, coordinate. 00:16:31.60\00:16:33.23 And we're gonna say, okay, Jesus, take us. 00:16:33.26\00:16:35.55 Because we joke about that 00:16:35.58\00:16:38.46 and what we actually do is we plan as much as we can. 00:16:38.49\00:16:43.47 And then when it comes to the actual trip we're flexible. 00:16:43.50\00:16:47.18 And so we go with it, when it changes you change with it 00:16:47.21\00:16:51.05 and you just take this as a divine opportunity 00:16:51.08\00:16:53.43 and this has happened year after year. 00:16:53.46\00:16:56.61 One year when we were in Chile 00:16:56.64\00:16:58.83 things were changing so much in the planning process 00:16:58.86\00:17:01.33 where we were gonna be, 00:17:01.36\00:17:02.59 that when we made up with the T-shirts 00:17:02.62\00:17:04.00 and put the names of the locations on the back 00:17:04.03\00:17:06.35 we actually put one and called it other. 00:17:06.38\00:17:09.04 Saying their flying is something 00:17:09.07\00:17:10.38 we don't even know about it yet 00:17:10.41\00:17:11.44 while the T-shirts are being printed. 00:17:11.47\00:17:12.51 Yeah, I love it. 00:17:12.54\00:17:13.57 I ended up being a leader of the other site. 00:17:13.60\00:17:15.96 We didn't even know what existed 00:17:15.99\00:17:17.42 and there was no church to be constructed at that site 00:17:17.45\00:17:20.65 so we went there with no construction 00:17:20.68\00:17:23.87 and so what did we do, we said, okay God, 00:17:23.90\00:17:27.24 what do you want us to do to build a church, 00:17:27.27\00:17:29.61 it's not gonna be we lay block 00:17:29.64\00:17:31.66 so how do we build a church right here? 00:17:31.69\00:17:33.82 And our construction leader for that particular project, 00:17:33.85\00:17:38.79 her first year as construction superintendent 00:17:38.82\00:17:40.79 with no building was a person named Rebecca Widmore, 00:17:40.82\00:17:44.92 is now the brains behind Ultimate Workout 00:17:44.95\00:17:47.37 in the office at Maranatha. 00:17:47.40\00:17:48.75 That's right. 00:17:48.78\00:17:49.81 And so she took something where her job is 00:17:49.84\00:17:51.57 just taken away for her and what does she gonna do? 00:17:51.60\00:17:54.59 Gonna make it a success. 00:17:54.62\00:17:55.65 How does all of this compare with Christ 00:17:55.68\00:17:57.69 leading His disciples? 00:17:57.72\00:17:59.42 Well, I think it's the same thing. 00:17:59.45\00:18:00.96 You see the disciples fumbling over and over 00:18:00.99\00:18:03.09 and not knowing how to handle the situation. 00:18:03.12\00:18:05.27 And yet Jesus sticks with them 00:18:05.30\00:18:06.80 and every opportunity 00:18:06.83\00:18:08.41 is another growth situation for them 00:18:08.44\00:18:10.36 and so I think is very much being a follower of Jesus today 00:18:10.39\00:18:13.32 is much of the same kind of thing. 00:18:13.35\00:18:15.20 Here we go for the ride. 00:18:15.23\00:18:17.92 The Black Hills of South Dakota are home to Mount Rushmore 00:18:17.95\00:18:21.08 and six national parks. 00:18:21.11\00:18:22.86 It's a must see destination in the United States. 00:18:22.89\00:18:25.80 And now you can visit this area 00:18:25.83\00:18:27.71 while serving on a mission trip. 00:18:27.74\00:18:29.81 The Hermosa Adventist Company in the Black Hills 00:18:29.84\00:18:32.36 is in need of a church. 00:18:32.39\00:18:34.23 This group of 40 people have no place to worship 00:18:34.26\00:18:36.77 and Maranatha is going to build them a new church. 00:18:36.80\00:18:39.69 But we can't do it alone so we are inviting you 00:18:39.72\00:18:42.02 to help construct a new sanctuary. 00:18:42.05\00:18:44.10 This project is from August 4th to 21. 00:18:44.13\00:18:46.92 Food and lodging is provided 00:18:46.95\00:18:48.20 and all you need to do is get to South Dakota 00:18:48.23\00:18:51.09 then if you've got time you can drive west 00:18:51.12\00:18:53.38 from the Black Hills project to Federal Way, Washington 00:18:53.41\00:18:56.54 where another group awaits your help for building a church 00:18:56.57\00:18:59.57 for the Russian, Ukrainian, Perusia Adventist church. 00:18:59.60\00:19:02.49 There are about 100 members and they are thrilled 00:19:02.52\00:19:04.94 to finally have a space of their own. 00:19:04.97\00:19:07.02 This project is from August 18 to September 4. 00:19:07.05\00:19:10.15 To apply for either of these projects go to maranatha.org. 00:19:10.18\00:19:13.91 To come along on Ultimate Workout 00:20:19.22\00:20:21.38 you have to be somewhere between 14 and 18 years of age 00:20:21.41\00:20:24.52 and not a graduate from high school 00:20:24.55\00:20:26.73 and yet every year the Ultimate Workout team 00:20:26.76\00:20:29.46 includes tons of all dudes and dudesses 00:20:29.49\00:20:32.25 who are far beyond 18. 00:20:32.28\00:20:35.53 How is that possible? Well, it's biblical. 00:20:35.56\00:20:39.20 Remember the Prophet Samuel, the moment his mother Hannah 00:20:39.23\00:20:43.81 had delivered him she was already working out solutions 00:20:43.84\00:20:46.85 to get Samuel back into the temple 00:20:46.88\00:20:49.73 where Eli could be his mentor. 00:20:49.76\00:20:51.80 Now you and I both know Eli was a not good mentor 00:20:51.83\00:20:54.81 to most of anybody except Samuel. 00:20:54.84\00:20:59.84 God sent Samuel back to the temple 00:20:59.87\00:21:02.30 to be able to experience Eli and his wisdom 00:21:02.33\00:21:06.32 and in the process of all that 00:21:06.35\00:21:08.09 Samuel became one of the greatest of God's prophets. 00:21:08.12\00:21:11.68 You know, it's interesting how the experience and wisdom 00:21:11.71\00:21:17.27 of older people 00:21:17.30\00:21:18.94 it kind of serves like miracle grow 00:21:18.97\00:21:21.43 in the lives of the young. 00:21:21.46\00:21:24.13 In another illustration young King Josiah, 00:21:24.16\00:21:28.49 now what young King Josiah took over the throne at age eight 00:21:28.52\00:21:32.13 and I don't know that they were ever very many 00:21:32.16\00:21:34.86 intelligent wise and great eight year old kings 00:21:34.89\00:21:39.84 but Josiah had a gift. 00:21:39.87\00:21:41.46 He knew how to lean on older folks. 00:21:41.49\00:21:44.04 You read all of Josiah stories what you find in the names of 00:21:44.07\00:21:47.57 Hilkiah, Shaphan, Azaliah and of course the prophet. 00:21:47.60\00:21:52.52 Prophetess Hannah. Now that's really special. 00:21:52.55\00:21:56.28 Here is a young kid who says 00:21:56.31\00:21:58.90 I want to do the best I possibly can. 00:21:58.93\00:22:01.91 At age 16 after being king for eight years 00:22:01.94\00:22:05.01 he began completely redesigning the temple for God. 00:22:05.04\00:22:10.19 Everything in his life seem to be just right on target. 00:22:10.22\00:22:12.95 In fact, he is the only king in scripture 00:22:12.98\00:22:16.23 where the words describe him as, 00:22:16.26\00:22:18.47 and Josiah followed the word in all of his way never turning 00:22:18.50\00:22:23.07 either to the right hand or to the left 00:22:23.10\00:22:26.14 and I calling that the straight arrow king. 00:22:26.17\00:22:29.58 He was a king who understood the value of having adults, 00:22:29.61\00:22:36.43 wise mentors close by. 00:22:36.46\00:22:40.60 Here's another illustration, remember doorman Mordecai? 00:22:40.63\00:22:45.79 Yeah, and his niece Hadassah. 00:22:45.82\00:22:49.74 Its miracles happen there. 00:22:49.77\00:22:51.84 All we really know is that Mordecai 00:22:51.87\00:22:54.21 who was the doorman to King Xerxes had a niece, 00:22:54.24\00:22:57.27 don't know if there was a woman in the house, 00:22:57.30\00:22:58.95 we don't know anything more than that, 00:22:58.98\00:23:00.21 all we know is Mordecai gift of wisdom rubbed off on Hadassah. 00:23:00.24\00:23:06.63 So that when the time came she was ready to be the queen 00:23:06.66\00:23:11.55 and so we have the story of Queen Esther. 00:23:11.58\00:23:14.53 Yes, it was Queen Esther story 00:23:14.56\00:23:17.39 but key to that story is the worst of Mordecai. 00:23:17.42\00:23:21.68 Every summer when we began with Ultimate Workout 00:23:21.71\00:23:26.43 doing the planning we make sure 00:23:26.46\00:23:28.37 that we invite a very special group of wise aged mentors. 00:23:28.40\00:23:34.38 People who really know how to deal with teenagers, 00:23:34.41\00:23:36.82 people know how to love, 00:23:36.85\00:23:37.95 people whose connection with God is bright solid. 00:23:37.98\00:23:41.79 Ask the kids about them I know what they'll tell you. 00:23:41.82\00:23:45.26 They'll immediately begin describing 00:23:45.29\00:23:47.05 long all night conversations 00:23:47.08\00:23:49.92 with this mentor or that mentor or with that old person with-- 00:23:49.95\00:23:53.54 you know, there is something that happens 00:23:53.57\00:23:55.85 when they get together 00:23:55.88\00:23:56.91 and they be learned to trust each other. 00:23:56.94\00:23:58.90 As one of the old fellows said to me the other day 00:23:58.93\00:24:01.43 I can walk into a group of Ultimate Workout teenagers 00:24:01.46\00:24:04.27 and feel like one of them. 00:24:04.30\00:24:07.62 That's pretty cool. What the teenagers say? 00:24:07.65\00:24:11.71 They've got to make sure that while they are here 00:24:11.74\00:24:14.02 on Ultimate Workout they learned to lay a block 00:24:14.05\00:24:16.11 as well as Jessup 00:24:16.14\00:24:17.47 or they learned to give a shot as well was Williams. 00:24:17.50\00:24:20.56 Let me put it this way. 00:24:20.59\00:24:22.54 I believe that the brilliance of youth shines brightest 00:24:22.57\00:24:28.93 when buffed against the loving wisdom of aged Christians. 00:24:28.96\00:24:35.35 That's part of what Ultimate Workout is all about. 00:24:35.38\00:24:37.71 We're doing our best to change lives 00:24:37.74\00:24:40.81 and help create leaders for the future of our church 00:24:40.84\00:24:44.71 for the future of the world. 00:24:44.74\00:24:46.57 Talk to the kids about what they learned here. 00:24:46.60\00:24:48.99 One of the things you'll learn very quickly 00:24:49.02\00:24:50.73 is that they have learned wisdom from the adults. 00:24:50.76\00:24:54.13 In fact, you will hear young voices 00:24:54.16\00:24:57.06 speaking with wisdom, with creativity, 00:24:57.09\00:24:59.78 with convection far beyond their age. 00:24:59.81\00:25:03.18 That happens when they get to spend their time 00:25:03.21\00:25:07.11 with people who love Christ and can communicate it clearly. 00:25:07.14\00:25:10.80 In fact, I think you'll hear kids talking with the wisdom 00:25:10.83\00:25:15.92 that comes form Christ 00:25:15.95\00:25:17.95 and live it that wisdom with Christ's servant heart. 00:25:17.98\00:25:24.50 This morning I receive several photos 00:25:24.53\00:25:26.53 of one day churches Maranatha built this week in Angola. 00:25:26.56\00:25:30.43 Our team is working in and around 00:25:30.46\00:25:32.09 the capital city of Rwanda 00:25:32.12\00:25:33.83 building churches for existing congregations. 00:25:33.86\00:25:36.94 These four congregations will have a new church 00:25:36.97\00:25:39.25 to meet in this coming Sabbath. 00:25:39.28\00:25:41.42 The members will move out of less permanent course 00:25:41.45\00:25:43.87 and will soon start building the walls 00:25:43.90\00:25:45.68 of their one day church. 00:25:45.71\00:25:48.16 The current request from Angola 00:25:48.19\00:25:49.68 for churches and schools is quite large, 00:25:49.71\00:25:51.93 1,000 one day churches and 6,000 classrooms. 00:25:51.96\00:25:56.09 That is not an unreasonable request. 00:25:56.12\00:25:58.35 The need is definitely there. 00:25:58.38\00:26:00.67 Maranatha is committed to building 400 churches 00:26:00.70\00:26:03.03 and 200 one day classrooms in Angola. 00:26:03.06\00:26:06.02 These churches and schools 00:26:06.05\00:26:07.13 will positively impact thousands of lives. 00:26:21.55\00:26:24.16 for the Seventh-day Adventist church in Rwanda. 00:26:24.19\00:26:27.12 This work has begun in Angola on faith 00:26:27.15\00:26:29.24 that the funds will come in to meet this critical needs. 00:26:29.27\00:26:31.86 I'd like to invite you to get involved in Angola. 00:26:31.89\00:26:34.90 Pray about the needs there. 00:26:34.93\00:26:36.65 Praise God for the open opportunities 00:26:36.68\00:26:38.54 that exist right now and support the construction 00:26:38.57\00:26:41.86 of churches and schools with the donation. 00:26:41.89\00:26:44.51 To support the needs in Angola 00:26:44.54\00:26:46.09 call the number on your screen or visit maranatha.org. 00:26:46.12\00:26:49.85 Well, this program is been about old people 00:26:55.24\00:26:57.78 you know, like me and may be like you. 00:26:57.81\00:27:00.68 My wife and I sometimes are the oldest people 00:27:00.71\00:27:02.58 on a Maranatha project. 00:27:02.61\00:27:03.80 In fact, we're really glad when faith comes along 00:27:03.83\00:27:06.72 and we're no longer the oldest. 00:27:06.75\00:27:08.52 It's fun. 00:27:08.55\00:27:09.96 But Ultimate Workout is extra special 00:27:09.99\00:27:12.13 and as we've talked about for the last little while 00:27:12.16\00:27:14.67 there is a place for wisdom, 00:27:14.70\00:27:16.40 the aged wisdom that comes with the folks who were here 00:27:16.43\00:27:19.61
