00:03:17.00\00:03:18.56 Their mission: to build One-Day Churches and to make 00:03:18.56\00:03:21.56 a positive impact on communities all over Nicaragua. 00:03:21.56\00:03:28.33 Ultimate Workout is exactly what it sounds like. 00:03:34.83\00:03:36.93 It's definitely ultimate. 00:03:36.93\00:03:38.90 You have to be ready for anything. 00:03:38.90\00:03:40.33 Ready for all the elements. 00:03:40.33\00:03:42.63 You have certain plans, plans are subject to change 00:03:42.63\00:03:44.30 at any time. 00:03:44.30\00:03:45.63 We have schedules set, plans get changed, everything, 00:03:45.63\00:03:47.93 and it's awesome. 00:03:47.93\00:03:50.83 Different weather, constantly changing, the buildings, 00:03:50.83\00:03:54.40 the people. 00:03:54.40\00:03:56.03 You never know what to expect. 00:03:56.03\00:03:57.36 It's always something new and something fun. 00:03:57.36\00:04:00.60 Nicaragua presented some challenges to 00:04:00.60\00:04:02.36 the Ultimate Workout volunteers with its constant rain. 00:04:02.36\00:04:06.93 Work on most of the sites had to pause several times a day 00:04:06.93\00:04:10.10 because of the downpours. 00:04:10.10\00:04:13.23 [rain pouring] 00:04:13.23\00:04:23.46 So, it started raining like crazy after working on 00:04:29.43\00:04:32.36 the church, and so now we are digging all this mud and junk up 00:04:32.36\00:04:37.53 so that the water flows down there... 00:04:37.53\00:04:40.53 so it doesn't flow to the church. 00:04:40.53\00:04:46.43 Oh man, this is not your comfort zone. 00:04:46.43\00:04:49.93 Cold showers, no toilet seats, I mean, 00:04:49.93\00:04:53.10 not being able to eat when you want to. 00:04:53.10\00:04:55.93 Yeah. 00:04:55.93\00:04:57.83 There's a limited amount of things to do in your free time. 00:04:57.83\00:05:01.80 My favorite moment on this trip was probably definitely 00:05:01.80\00:05:05.03 the river and the kids. 00:05:05.03\00:05:07.23 I love kids and it's a lot of fun getting to see their faces 00:05:07.23\00:05:09.86 and how they react to different people coming to their country, 00:05:09.86\00:05:13.56 and it's just fun just to hang out with all the kids. 00:05:13.56\00:05:17.13 Along with building One-Day Churches, 00:05:17.13\00:05:19.70 volunteers also coordinated outreach activities 00:05:19.70\00:05:22.60 at each of the sites. 00:05:22.60\00:05:24.63 Among the more popular programs were the Vacation Bible Schools, 00:05:24.63\00:05:28.13 which attracted large groups of neighborhood children. 00:05:28.13\00:05:31.26 You want to color, crayons? 00:05:31.26\00:05:34.26 Responsibility here is key. 00:05:34.26\00:05:36.43 You don't have anybody else to pick up after you. 00:05:36.43\00:05:40.03 You need to--you become an adult. 00:05:40.03\00:05:43.56 You become someone mature. 00:05:43.56\00:05:45.53 You learn so much here, so it's a lot different from home. 00:05:45.53\00:05:50.33 It's very unique, and it's definitely something that grows 00:05:50.33\00:05:54.13 you in many different ways and just broadens your world view. 00:05:54.13\00:05:59.93 I learned that I can manage going without a shower 00:05:59.93\00:06:01.86 for a couple days. 00:06:01.86\00:06:03.36 Bathrooms are a lot different, 00:06:03.36\00:06:05.40 and when I get home I'm gonna hug my toilet. 00:06:05.40\00:06:09.46 No, not really. 00:06:09.46\00:06:12.26 You don't have the benefits that you do at home. 00:06:12.26\00:06:16.83 It's more different here. 00:06:16.83\00:06:18.73 You have--you live a simple, simple life, 00:06:18.73\00:06:22.26 and sometimes it's what you need. 00:06:22.26\00:06:24.80 You need to get out of having the luxuries of home. 00:06:24.80\00:06:29.60 The one thing I really don't like about the trip--it's not 00:06:29.60\00:06:32.20 how early we have to get up, it's what makes us 00:06:32.20\00:06:34.30 get up so early. 00:06:34.30\00:06:35.76 We have roosters here that are not so friendly. 00:06:35.76\00:06:38.76 We actually had 'em going off about 3 o'clock in the morning 00:06:38.76\00:06:41.00 and they do not stop until maybe about 7, and even then, 00:06:41.00\00:06:45.03 we get random ones. 00:06:45.03\00:06:46.76 [rooster crowing] 00:06:46.76\00:06:48.43 There you go. That is perfect. 00:06:48.43\00:06:50.50 That is wonderful. 00:06:50.50\00:06:52.16 I don't even know how else to put that. 00:06:52.16\00:06:53.90 That was perfect. 00:06:53.90\00:06:56.53 Well, I learned to be patient. 00:06:56.53\00:07:01.23 I learned to be flexible with the different kinds of people 00:07:01.23\00:07:04.30 that I'm around. 00:07:04.30\00:07:06.00 It's not easy because I'm the kind of girl that is very--like, 00:07:06.00\00:07:11.23 I want my thing done, you should do it. 00:07:11.23\00:07:14.06 But it's not like in here. 00:07:14.06\00:07:15.70 You have to friendly, you have to be really 00:07:15.70\00:07:19.86 flexible with everyone. 00:07:19.86\00:07:21.26 You can't just do whatever you want. 00:07:21.26\00:07:23.93 You come here with completely--you don't even have 00:07:23.93\00:07:28.43 expectations 'cause you don't even know what to expect. 00:07:28.43\00:07:31.36 So, when you get here and you realize that everybody else is 00:07:31.36\00:07:37.43 in that exact situation and it's kind of cool to have somebody of 00:07:37.43\00:07:44.66 the same faith come with you to this one thing for one purpose. 00:07:44.66\00:07:49.33 You know? 00:07:49.33\00:07:50.93 You have a purpose and there's a reason why you're here, 00:07:50.93\00:07:53.50 and God wanted you to be here for a reason. 00:07:53.50\00:07:55.90 On the count of three: one, two, three. 00:07:55.90\00:07:58.36 [kids yelling] 00:07:58.36\00:08:00.73 Nice. 00:08:00.73\00:08:02.06 The satisfaction of accomplishing what you 00:08:02.06\00:08:05.10 came here to do. 00:08:05.10\00:08:07.23 I mean, after every church we built, 00:08:07.23\00:08:09.20 you look at it and it's like, "I helped do that." 00:08:09.20\00:08:11.76 You know? 00:08:11.76\00:08:13.10 Where I'm from, I'm not taking any part in anything like that, 00:08:13.10\00:08:15.73 so to actually be a part of something like this, 00:08:15.73\00:08:18.30 it makes you feel kind of good. 00:08:18.30\00:08:28.53 Our drills--we had to charge our batteries for our drills, 00:08:31.50\00:08:35.80 and we really needed to get the church done in one day. 00:08:35.80\00:08:38.03 There was children in the church playing around, 00:08:38.03\00:08:40.03 and I told God, I was like, 00:08:40.03\00:08:41.50 "God, I want this church done today. 00:08:41.50\00:08:44.53 I don't want to go back. 00:08:44.53\00:08:46.03 I don't--I just want this church done. 00:08:46.03\00:08:47.80 You look at all these people waiting for us to 00:08:47.80\00:08:51.13 finish this church. 00:08:51.13\00:08:52.83 And our--we didn't have any power and we had, like, 00:08:52.83\00:08:56.33 half a drill left, and it wasn't going very well, 00:08:56.33\00:08:59.40 'cause we were almost done. 00:08:59.40\00:09:00.93 So we had to drive an hour to go back there just to put 00:09:00.93\00:09:03.36 two pieces of tin on and the ridge cap. 00:09:03.36\00:09:06.50 And so we prayed that the power would come back on, 00:09:06.50\00:09:09.00 and it immediately came back on. 00:09:09.00\00:09:11.46 [kids cheering] 00:09:11.46\00:09:19.83 Thanks to Ultimate Workout, I've learned that I can trust in 00:09:27.13\00:09:32.43 God and he really does hear me when I call. 00:09:32.43\00:09:37.63 And I know sometimes that sounds a little typical Christian, 00:09:37.63\00:09:44.23 but it's places like these that really make you think 00:09:44.23\00:09:48.33 and realize that God has time for just you. 00:09:48.33\00:09:53.63 Maranatha first visited Falakata, India in 2000. 00:09:59.13\00:10:02.90 Today, the seven churches that volunteers built are thriving 00:10:02.90\00:10:06.00 and the Adventist Secondary School is making a different 00:10:06.00\00:10:08.86 in the lives of hundreds of children. 00:10:08.86\00:10:11.50 As they interact with teachers, with the students, 00:10:11.50\00:10:15.50 with their fellow mates, they are going to learn a lot about 00:10:15.50\00:10:19.30 what Jesus Christ means to each one of us in our lives. 00:10:19.30\00:10:23.53 But the school is bursting at the seams. 00:10:23.53\00:10:26.43 They have asked Maranatha to build additional classrooms so 00:10:26.43\00:10:29.03 they don't have to turn students away. 00:10:29.03\00:10:30.96 There are two opportunities to serve in Falakata. 00:10:30.96\00:10:33.76 The first project, January 16th through 27th, 00:10:33.76\00:10:36.46 will be led by Claudio Hapas and Grace Kim. 00:10:36.46\00:10:39.70 Although the main focus will be construction One-Day classrooms, 00:10:39.70\00:10:42.76 volunteers will also conduct medical clinics in rural areas 00:10:42.76\00:10:46.43 that lack access to proper care. 00:10:46.43\00:10:48.93 Can't volunteer in January? 00:10:48.93\00:10:50.63 Plan on joining Karen Godfreid when she leads a second project, 00:10:50.63\00:10:53.96 March 12th through 24th. 00:10:53.96\00:10:56.46 Let the people of India steal your heart. 00:10:56.46\00:11:00.50 Most of the schools in Livingstone are government. 00:11:01.26\00:11:03.63 Our children are going to schools that do not teach us 00:11:03.63\00:11:06.66 the doctrines of the church. 00:11:06.66\00:11:09.03 Parents, they have no choice. 00:11:09.03\00:11:11.16 They have no chance to choose where to take their children. 00:11:11.16\00:11:13.80 Two years ago, Maranatha volunteers answered many prayers 00:11:13.80\00:11:16.93 by building two primary schools in Livingstone, Zambia. 00:11:16.93\00:11:20.83 Today, hundreds of children are receiving a Christian education, 00:11:20.83\00:11:24.56 but there is still no Adventist secondary school. 00:11:24.56\00:11:27.66 Beginning in January 2013, help Maranatha build an education and 00:11:27.66\00:11:32.96 evangelism center along with seven One-Day School classrooms. 00:11:32.96\00:11:37.16 Medical outreach and children's programs will also be conducted 00:11:37.16\00:11:41.43 in surrounding villages. 00:11:41.43\00:11:43.46 You'll also get to see the breathtaking waters of 00:11:43.46\00:11:45.63 Victoria Falls, take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, 00:11:45.63\00:11:49.30 and experience the thrill of a safari game drive. 00:11:49.30\00:11:54.00 The children of Livingstone are waiting for you. 00:11:54.00\00:11:56.20 Sign up today. 00:11:56.20\00:11:59.20 Spent most of my time-- 00:11:59.20\00:12:00.60 That was most of the time in Mexico. 00:12:00.60\00:12:02.93 You've just dropped in on a conversation that Bob McNaughton 00:12:02.93\00:12:04.93 and I have been having, and I need to tell you two things 00:12:04.93\00:12:07.26 about Bob. 00:12:07.26\00:12:08.60 Bob is a--well, how would you say it? 00:12:08.60\00:12:10.93 Professional volunteer? 00:12:10.93\00:12:12.26 Yes. 00:12:12.26\00:12:13.60 I think all his life he has been volunteering, 00:12:13.60\00:12:15.26 trying to figure out a way to serve Christ for 00:12:15.26\00:12:17.26 the people who need it. 00:12:17.26\00:12:18.60 The other thing is is that around Maranatha, 00:12:18.60\00:12:21.36 Bob's known as Boss Bob the Painter. 00:12:21.36\00:12:25.60 Where'd you get that? 00:12:25.60\00:12:27.36 Well, I was a painting contractor for many years, 00:12:27.36\00:12:29.63 and on the first mission trip I did for Maranatha, 00:12:29.63\00:12:32.60 they asked me, "Do you know anything about painting?" 00:12:32.60\00:12:35.46 I said, "Just a little bit." 00:12:35.46\00:12:36.93 And so I ended up in charge, and we ended up getting twice 00:12:36.93\00:12:41.33 the amount of work that they expected to get done, 00:12:41.33\00:12:43.33 and they were so happy with it from that point on, 00:12:43.33\00:12:47.10 I was Boss Bob the Painter. 00:12:47.10\00:12:48.93 That you're just kind of terminal now. 00:12:48.93\00:12:50.30 You are the painter dude. 00:12:50.30\00:12:51.63 Yeah, well, you get a reputation-- 00:12:51.63\00:12:52.96 You can't get away from it. You can't get away from it. 00:12:52.96\00:12:55.26 I want to know how you felt when you got off the bus in 00:12:55.26\00:12:58.20 Nicaragua in front of the Chinandega Church and School. 00:12:58.20\00:13:03.53 I thought that it was good to be back into the mission field, 00:13:03.53\00:13:07.23 but I was expecting and wondering what I was getting 00:13:07.23\00:13:11.53 myself into, because I had been on so many mission trips and 00:13:11.53\00:13:15.66 seen so much confusion, and seen so many things that can go 00:13:15.66\00:13:19.86 wrong, that I didn't know what to expect with Maranatha. 00:13:19.86\00:13:24.46 What did you find? 00:13:24.46\00:13:26.63 Well, a pleasant surprise. 00:13:26.63\00:13:28.76 I found organization, I found leadership, 00:13:28.76\00:13:31.83 I found people--the volunteers were unbelievable. 00:13:31.83\00:13:35.76 They had an attitude that I had never seen before, 00:13:35.76\00:13:39.10 and it started with the leadership when they 00:13:39.10\00:13:41.10 started--they talked to us and said, "We only have three rules, 00:13:41.10\00:13:45.30 and if you live by these three rules, 00:13:45.30\00:13:47.16 everything will go great on this mission trip. 00:13:47.16\00:13:49.23 We'll get a lot done and everybody'll go home really 00:13:49.23\00:13:51.96 happy that they came here." 00:13:51.96\00:13:53.96 And what are the three rules? 00:13:53.96\00:13:55.36 Well, the first rule was "No murmuring," 00:13:55.36\00:13:58.86 and the second rule was "No murmuring," 00:13:58.86\00:14:02.50 and the third rule was "No murmuring." 00:14:02.50\00:14:05.33 And there was no murmuring, and the people worked together, 00:14:05.33\00:14:09.33 they were organized. 00:14:09.33\00:14:11.23 The people that they had--Maranatha had in the 00:14:11.23\00:14:14.50 country, in Nicaragua, were already had everything laid out. 00:14:14.50\00:14:20.06 And what really surprised me is I knew--and this 00:14:20.06\00:14:22.50 is what worried me. 00:14:22.50\00:14:24.60 What surprised me is we were supposed to go to the opposite 00:14:24.60\00:14:27.70 side of the country, but it had rained so hard they could not 00:14:27.70\00:14:31.06 pour the concrete, so they switched us on the other side of 00:14:31.06\00:14:34.36 country to a project that they hadn't even started 00:14:34.36\00:14:38.86 and thought about. 00:14:38.86\00:14:41.13 And it went like it was planned all out to the last minute. 00:14:41.13\00:14:45.46 It went perfectly and I was just shocked that they could do that. 00:14:45.46\00:14:49.46 Bob, you've been on lots of mission trips with Youth with 00:14:49.46\00:14:52.23 a Mission and a variety of other organizations. 00:14:52.23\00:14:54.43 What got you to go on your first Maranatha trip? 00:15:19.03\00:15:20.46 It's in Clarkston, Washington. 00:15:20.46\00:15:22.66 It's called Good News Fellowship. 00:15:22.66\00:15:24.40 Which is clear on the other side of Washington, 00:15:24.40\00:15:26.43 over by Idaho. 00:15:26.43\00:15:27.76 Yes it is. 00:15:27.76\00:15:29.10 Right across the Snake River. 00:15:29.10\00:15:30.43 Okay. 00:15:30.43\00:15:31.76 And so it's a small church, very small church. 00:15:31.76\00:15:33.63 There's only about 50-60 members through that church. 00:15:33.63\00:15:40.03 I felt safe going to that church, and being there, 00:15:40.03\00:15:44.23 I had stop going to the mission field because of all the things 00:15:44.23\00:15:48.00 that I had seen go wrong in the mission fields. 00:15:48.00\00:15:51.26 And they wanted me to go back 00:15:51.26\00:15:54.13 and they told me about Maranatha. 00:15:54.13\00:15:56.06 And I said, "Well, it's just another organization. 00:15:56.06\00:15:58.00 It's gonna be the same thing all over again 00:15:58.00\00:16:00.13 and I'm really not interested." 00:16:00.13\00:16:02.00 I'm living now on Social Security. 00:16:02.00\00:16:04.23 I had some financial misfortunes during the big bust, and I said, 00:16:04.23\00:16:09.40 "I can't afford it." 00:16:09.40\00:16:11.96 That was my excuse. 00:16:11.96\00:16:13.40 They said, "That's alright. 00:16:13.40\00:16:14.80 We'll pay for it. 00:16:14.80\00:16:16.93 I said--well, I kind of felt obligated to go, and so I said, 00:16:16.93\00:16:21.60 "Okay, I'll go." 00:16:21.60\00:16:23.16 And so they sent me to--that's when I went to Nicaragua. 00:16:23.16\00:16:25.16 That was your first one. 00:16:25.16\00:16:26.50 First one, and that was in February. 00:16:26.50\00:16:27.83 Okay. 00:16:27.83\00:16:29.53 Of 2012. 00:16:29.53\00:16:31.70 Yes. 00:16:31.70\00:16:33.23 So, have you been on any others since then? 00:25:13.50\00:25:16.76 This is your staff and this is your rod. 00:25:16.76\00:25:18.90 They serve very different purposes. 00:25:18.90\00:25:20.90 It's important for you to remember to use each one only as 00:25:20.90\00:25:24.26 it has been designed. 00:25:24.26\00:25:25.70 David, put away your slingshot! 00:25:25.70\00:25:27.63 Pay attention! 00:25:27.63\00:25:29.13 Now, what are you gonna use the rod for?" 00:25:29.13\00:25:30.83 It's not an easy job. 00:25:30.83\00:25:33.60 It's like Jacob trying to make a man out of Joseph, 00:25:33.60\00:25:37.33 or Abraham teaching Isaac to ride a camel, 00:25:37.33\00:25:40.40 or Rebecca's mother teaching her how to cook porridge so it 00:25:40.40\00:25:44.06 tastes like venison. 00:25:44.06\00:25:46.13 The Bible is packed with examples of older folks trying 00:25:46.13\00:25:49.86 to teach younger folks how to do stuff. 00:25:49.86\00:25:53.80 It's different at Ultimate Workout. 00:25:53.80\00:25:56.40 It's more like Mordecai giving Hadassah the right words to say 00:25:56.40\00:26:01.10 in the palace and then helping her into Xerxes' chariot. 00:26:01.10\00:26:07.20 Now, I've met a lot of grandparents and parents who are 00:26:07.20\00:26:10.56 not quite sure how to teach the kids how to be like Jesus. 00:26:10.56\00:26:14.40 They've tried all the right things and yet there seems to be 00:26:14.40\00:26:17.63 something missing. 00:26:17.63\00:26:19.83 The kids just haven't fully bought into the plan. 00:26:19.83\00:26:23.10 So, I have an idea. 00:26:23.10\00:26:25.33 Send them on Ultimate Workout. 00:26:25.33\00:26:27.56 The Maranatha team has learned how to guide without being in 00:26:27.56\00:26:31.10 the way, how to challenge without making the task 00:26:31.10\00:26:34.90 impossible, and how to lead toward Jesus without 00:26:34.90\00:26:39.43 being an obstacle. 00:26:39.43\00:26:41.66 Will it work with every kid? 00:26:41.66\00:26:44.00 Probably not, but it might work with your grandson. 00:26:44.00\00:26:50.00 If you'd like to learn more about Maranatha's 00:26:52.20\00:26:54.60 Ultimate Workout Experience, call 800-467-6384 00:26:54.60\00:27:01.16 or visit Maranatha.org. 00:27:01.16\00:27:03.56 You can also provide funding for the Ultimate Workout. 00:27:03.56\00:27:06.63 Send your gift in the mail to Maranatha Volunteers 00:27:06.63\00:27:09.76 International, 990 Reserve Drive, Suite 100, 00:27:09.76\00:27:14.30 Roseville, California, 95678. 00:27:14.30\00:27:17.96 The Ultimate Workout is an adventure 00:27:17.96\00:27:19.83 you don't want to miss. 00:27:19.83\00:27:21.46 Call our office today at 800-467-6384 00:27:21.46\00:27:26.93 or visit Maranatha.org. 00:27:26.93\00:27:33.40 You can see photographs of the Ultimate Workout and our 00:27:34.93\00:27:37.36 other projects by visiting the Maranatha Volunteers 00:27:37.36\00:27:39.73 International Facebook page at Maranatha.org/Facebook. 00:27:39.73\00:27:46.60 Be sure to like our page, that way we'll keep connected. 00:27:46.60\00:27:51.20 Thanks for watching today, and I'm looking forward to seeing 00:27:51.20\00:27:53.70 you next time on Maranatha Mission Stories. 00:27:53.70\00:27:57.16 [music] 00:28:02.50\00:28:17.50 CC by Aberdeen Captioning 1-800-688-6621 www.abercap.com 00:28:18.50\00:28:23.50
