But one element vital to
the success of Haiti's future

It's estimated that more than

destroyed in the earthquake.

Children with aspirations
of becoming doctors, teachers,

lawyers, found themselves
with no place to learn.

Haiti came to a halt.

Schools were not part of
Maranatha's original plan

We were responding to a request
to build housing for those

who had lost their
homes due to the earthquake.

But a visit to the

The campus was
inundated with over

25,000 displaced
people seeking refuge.

But despite the tents
that covered every corner

of this campus,

one thing in mind: classrooms.

To teach, you have
to make some conditions.

You have the students,
and you have the teachers;

but if you don't
have any classrooms,

After the earthquake,
Dr. Pierre found himself,

the President of a university,

The campus is
made up of more than

but the earthquake destroyed and
damaged many of their buildings.

Their situation is a
common one in Port-au-Prince.

We have in Port-au-Prince
more than 85% of institutions

who collapsed on January 12, and
you can imagine the government

cannot really help.

And until now, some of
them cannot open their doors:

primary schools, secondary
schools, and universities.

In an effort to reestablish
a sense of normalcy to life,

Haiti's Minister of Education
announced that schools would

reopen in April, only a few
months after the earthquake.

The idea of getting kids
back into school was a good one,

but the reality was a challenge.

We had nothing.

We received only 6 tents

to receive more
than 40 classrooms.

So, it was a very
difficult--really,

it was impossible for

March, following the earthquake.

where temporary shelters

But after visiting

been intended as shelters were

and the buildings brought hope

without those

In the village of Mathieu
in the southern part of Haiti,

this is the source
of the water of life.

And what I know for sure
is that before the earthquake,

there were at least 300
people going to church here

and about 130 children
in the elementary school,

The Adventist School Maranatha
in the Village of Mathieu.

Then the earthquake came, and
everything shifted overnight.

You can imagine, the
entire church fell down.
00:23:41.43\00:23:44.20
That eliminated the church,
and the school fell down.
00:23:44.20\00:23:47.36
And at that point,
they had basically nothing.

Maranatha built the
double church building.

People from the community
then started worrying about what

was going to happen
with the school and how fast.

And I'm not sure of
all of those details.

What I do know is this.

We were here
yesterday: 3 teachers,

30 students in the school.

We're here today:
there's probably 280-300 people

in church.

And the pastor looks at
me and says, "Pastor Dick,

we must have a school, because
if you have a church without

a school, you have no church."

I thought about that so much.

Every day we hear
new, additional, brighter,

eager requests from
the people of Haiti.

"We'd like a school
here. We'd like a school there.

Yeah, they talk about churches,
but they always talk about the

school first, because in Haiti,
the success of your school

predicts the
success of your church.

Three hundred and fifty schools
requested just in the south,

many more around the
city itself in Port-au-Prince;

and once you get
north up in the mountains,

there's the same
request: "We want a school,

so we can have a church."

When Jesus was talking
about lost things--you remember,

recorded well as
lost coin, lost sheep,

lost boy--the lost
sheep one is my favorite.

Ninety and nine were home.

There was one missing.

I asked the pastor,
"Why do you have schools?"

"Because that's the way
we find the lost lambs."

Maranatha's work is to

for exactly that to happen.

that we don't ever do it alone.
