And then when we were here a year ago, 00:00:04.20\00:00:06.03 this was home to thousands of refugees, 00:00:06.03\00:00:08.30 a tent city right here on the concrete. 00:00:08.30\00:00:10.53 Today, this is part of 00:00:10.53\00:00:12.63 the Adventist University of Haiti-- 00:00:12.63\00:00:15.80 school rooms-- and they're packed. 00:00:15.80\00:00:19.73 [music] 00:00:21.03\00:00:36.03 This container sat for six months on a dock in 00:00:58.93\00:01:02.73 Dominican Republic. 00:01:02.73\00:01:04.56 You prayed, I prayed, Maranatha prayed, 00:01:04.56\00:01:07.86 the people of Haiti prayed, we all prayed that it 00:01:07.86\00:01:11.36 would be released. 00:01:11.36\00:01:12.96 When it was, it was the perfect time to build schools. 00:01:12.96\00:01:17.10 If you look around in here, there are 300 large pieces of 00:01:17.10\00:01:20.10 rebar and a ton of other material, 00:01:20.10\00:01:22.73 ready to build schools in Haiti. 00:01:22.73\00:01:28.06 More than a year has passed since Haiti's 00:01:28.06\00:01:29.96 devastating earthquake. 00:01:29.96\00:01:32.16 Although life is still challenging for many, 00:01:32.16\00:01:34.06 signs of progress can be seen all around the city. 00:01:34.06\00:01:39.96 Rubble is being cleared, the roads are being repaired, 00:01:39.96\00:01:42.83 and life is settling into a new normal. 00:01:42.83\00:01:47.70 But one element vital to the success of Haiti's future 00:01:47.70\00:01:51.03 is education. 00:01:51.03\00:01:55.70 It's estimated that more than 00:01:55.70\00:01:57.03 3,000 classrooms were destroyed in the earthquake. 00:01:57.03\00:01:59.06 Children with aspirations of becoming doctors, teachers, 00:01:59.06\00:02:02.10 lawyers, found themselves with no place to learn. 00:02:02.10\00:02:06.33 Education in Haiti came to a halt. 00:02:06.33\00:02:12.20 Schools were not part of Maranatha's original plan 00:02:12.20\00:02:14.40 for Haiti. 00:02:14.40\00:02:15.96 We were responding to a request to build housing for those 00:02:15.96\00:02:18.63 who had lost their homes due to the earthquake. 00:02:18.63\00:02:21.73 But a visit to the Adventist University in Haiti 00:02:21.73\00:02:24.13 changed everything. 00:02:24.13\00:02:26.73 The campus was inundated with over 00:02:26.73\00:02:28.16 25,000 displaced people seeking refuge. 00:02:28.16\00:02:32.56 But despite the tents that covered every corner 00:02:32.56\00:02:34.73 of this campus, University President, 00:02:34.73\00:02:37.40 Dr. J.J. Pierre, had only one thing in mind: classrooms. 00:02:37.40\00:02:43.96 To teach, you have to make some conditions. 00:02:43.96\00:02:48.10 You have the students, and you have the teachers; 00:02:48.10\00:02:54.03 but if you don't have any classrooms, 00:02:54.03\00:02:59.16 you are missing something really important. 00:02:59.16\00:03:04.10 After the earthquake, Dr. Pierre found himself, 00:03:04.10\00:03:06.90 the President of a university, without any classrooms. 00:03:06.90\00:03:11.26 The campus is made up of more than 00:03:11.26\00:03:12.60 2,500 students from kindergarten through college, 00:03:12.60\00:03:17.10 but the earthquake destroyed and damaged many of their buildings. 00:03:17.10\00:03:21.03 Their situation is a common one in Port-au-Prince. 00:03:21.03\00:03:25.43 We have in Port-au-Prince more than 85% of institutions 00:03:25.43\00:03:35.33 who collapsed on January 12, and you can imagine the government 00:03:35.33\00:03:41.33 cannot really help. 00:03:41.33\00:03:44.43 And until now, some of them cannot open their doors: 00:03:44.43\00:03:49.03 primary schools, secondary schools, and universities. 00:03:49.03\00:03:53.83 In an effort to reestablish a sense of normalcy to life, 00:03:53.83\00:03:57.63 Haiti's Minister of Education announced that schools would 00:03:57.63\00:04:00.63 reopen in April, only a few months after the earthquake. 00:04:00.63\00:04:05.33 The idea of getting kids back into school was a good one, 00:04:05.33\00:04:09.16 but the reality was a challenge. 00:04:09.16\00:04:12.76 We had nothing. 00:04:12.76\00:04:15.53 We received only 6 tents 00:04:15.53\00:04:20.40 to receive more than 40 classrooms. 00:04:20.40\00:04:27.13 You can figure out what it would be to take 40 classes 00:04:27.13\00:04:33.76 in 6 tents. 00:04:33.76\00:04:36.70 So, it was a very difficult--really, 00:04:36.70\00:04:43.00 it was impossible for us to restart classes. 00:04:43.00\00:04:47.46 Maranatha visited Haiti in March, following the earthquake. 00:04:47.46\00:04:50.73 We traveled to sites where temporary shelters 00:04:50.73\00:04:52.80 would be built. 00:04:52.80\00:04:54.13 But after visiting the university campus, 00:04:54.13\00:04:56.03 meeting Dr. Pierre, and hearing his desperate need 00:04:56.03\00:04:59.70 for classrooms, we broadened our focus. 00:04:59.70\00:05:03.80 Structures that had originally been intended as shelters were 00:05:03.80\00:05:07.43 erected as classrooms, and the buildings brought hope 00:05:07.43\00:05:11.10 to a desperate situation. 00:05:11.10\00:05:13.50 Dr. Pierre can't imagine what life would be like 00:05:13.50\00:05:16.73 without his new classrooms. 00:05:16.73\00:05:19.33 You can imagine a school who cannot receive more than 00:05:19.33\00:05:23.66 2,500 students left in their home without the education. 00:05:23.66\00:05:32.43 So, it would be a very sad situation for the parents, 00:05:32.43\00:05:35.60 for the school, and for the Adventist church also. 00:05:35.60\00:05:41.00 I can tell you, it would be a very, very big, big, 00:05:41.00\00:05:46.70 big challenge for us. 00:05:46.70\00:05:49.10 It would be really impossible to restart classes 00:05:49.10\00:05:54.03 without those one-day structures. 00:05:54.03\00:05:56.13 It would be impossible, impossible. 00:05:56.13\00:06:00.30 When classes resumed in the new one-day structures, 00:06:00.30\00:06:03.80 parents and students were amazed at the quality of their 00:06:03.80\00:06:06.93 classrooms and expressed their gratitude for what Maranatha 00:06:06.93\00:06:10.63 had been able to provide. 00:06:10.63\00:06:12.63 I would like to say thank you for Maranatha, for God. 00:06:12.63\00:06:17.50 God is good all the time, and God will bless you every day 00:06:17.50\00:06:22.06 on your life. 00:06:22.06\00:06:23.76 Thanks to you, we have this opportunity to be here, 00:06:23.76\00:06:28.36 to be inside of the class, to receive instruction. 00:06:28.36\00:06:33.10 Because without you, we can't come to do it. 00:06:33.10\00:06:38.36 So, we thank Maranatha for this help to Haiti. 00:06:38.36\00:06:43.06 I'm so happy to them, 00:06:43.06\00:06:45.46 because they give us this kind of building. 00:06:45.46\00:06:48.00 Without them, we can't keep studying here. 00:06:48.00\00:06:54.93 And because of that, I wish to Maranatha welcome and thank you 00:06:54.93\00:07:00.86 for this gift. 00:07:00.86\00:07:03.26 When the parents and the students came, 00:07:03.26\00:07:06.43 they saw the structure the other school had, 00:07:06.43\00:07:12.46 and they were seeing our structure, and they said, "Wow, 00:07:12.46\00:07:20.73 you have the nicest structure among the other schools. 00:07:20.73\00:07:27.43 We are really blessed." 00:07:27.43\00:07:30.30 They were proud of those structures. 00:07:30.30\00:07:33.86 So, we are thankful to Maranatha to give us not only good 00:07:33.86\00:07:42.83 classrooms, but the nicest classrooms in the country 00:07:42.83\00:07:49.40 to receive our students. 00:07:49.40\00:07:51.63 With those structures, we look like rich people in Haiti. 00:07:51.63\00:07:57.96 But for Dr. Pierre, it's not about having 00:07:57.96\00:08:01.30 the strongest structures or the nicest classrooms. 00:08:01.30\00:08:05.50 He's out to change Haiti one student at a time. 00:08:05.50\00:08:10.00 If you educate a child, the child can educate its parents, 00:08:10.00\00:08:15.63 and the parents can change the neighbor. 00:08:15.63\00:08:19.06 I think the results can grow and grow and grow 00:08:19.06\00:08:23.70 because of their education. 00:08:23.70\00:08:26.00 So, I--to me, the main challenge we have in Haiti 00:08:26.00\00:08:33.36 is the education. 00:08:33.36\00:08:35.60 Dr. Pierre's passion for education and request 00:08:35.60\00:08:39.00 for classrooms expanded our scope. 00:08:39.00\00:08:41.96 Now many of the structures Maranatha erected are serving 00:08:41.96\00:08:44.86 multiple purposes. 00:08:44.86\00:08:46.83 During the day, they function as classrooms; at night, 00:08:46.83\00:08:50.60 as shelter; and on Sabbath, they are transformed 00:08:50.60\00:08:54.86 into sanctuaries for worship. 00:08:54.86\00:08:58.13 Whatever their use, they're all providing hope 00:08:58.13\00:09:01.33 for the people of Haiti. 00:09:01.33\00:09:03.96 When we come back, see how the new one-day school will make 00:09:03.96\00:09:07.66 a huge impact in Haiti. 00:09:07.66\00:09:12.10 [music] 00:09:13.26\00:09:19.50 [music] 00:09:27.83\00:09:42.83 It's been more than a year since Maranatha built 00:09:51.40\00:09:53.36 the first classrooms on the university campus. 00:09:53.36\00:09:56.40 Listen, and you'll hear a school in full session. 00:09:56.40\00:10:02.40 Dr. Pierre and I walked amidst the buzz of 00:10:02.40\00:10:04.80 the primary school buildings. 00:10:04.80\00:10:07.06 It's obvious that he is proud of how his school is not only 00:10:07.06\00:10:09.86 surviving, but thriving. 00:10:09.86\00:10:13.13 But the current buildings, they cannot comfortably hold 00:10:13.13\00:10:16.30 all of the students that want to attend. 00:10:16.30\00:10:18.76 Dr. Pierre shared his dream of building a new permanent 00:10:18.76\00:10:23.16 kindergarten and primary school that will comfortably 00:10:23.16\00:10:26.36 accommodate all their students. 00:10:26.36\00:10:29.50 This soccer field, it will become a one-day school campus. 00:10:29.50\00:10:35.10 We've talked about a variety of possibilities for 00:10:35.10\00:10:37.66 a new school campus for the primary and the kindergarten. 00:10:37.66\00:10:40.86 How are your dreams, right now, that would include 00:10:40.86\00:10:44.33 at least 22 buildings? 00:10:44.33\00:10:46.63 You need 22, right? 00:10:46.63\00:10:49.00 We need 22, but now we have this place. 00:10:49.00\00:10:54.20 This place is a soccer field, but we could envision putting, 00:10:54.20\00:10:58.56 like, 22 classrooms here. 00:10:58.56\00:11:01.63 Twenty-two classrooms would fill the needs of the school. 00:11:01.63\00:11:07.00 We will have all our classrooms here, 00:11:07.00\00:11:10.40 and it would be able for the management to watch over 00:11:10.40\00:11:15.20 the students, because all the building in one place. 00:11:15.20\00:11:18.96 That would be great. 00:11:18.96\00:11:21.36 All across the city, schools are successfully operating 00:11:21.36\00:11:24.73 under one-day structures. 00:11:24.73\00:11:26.56 The La Source School is one of those. 00:11:26.56\00:11:29.10 This primary school, under the direction of Regicee Jennice 00:11:29.10\00:11:33.76 is serving 505 students. 00:11:33.76\00:11:38.10 So, how important are the buildings to what you are doing, 00:11:38.10\00:11:41.86 to your work. 00:11:41.86\00:11:43.73 [interpreter translating] 00:11:43.73\00:11:50.23 Now it's better, because, you know, nowadays some schools, 00:11:52.90\00:11:57.90 they work under tarps, tents. 00:11:57.90\00:12:01.60 And, you know, because of the climate, it's too hot, 00:12:01.60\00:12:06.90 and they complain. 00:12:06.90\00:12:09.20 But now when we have this kind of facility, 00:12:09.20\00:12:11.13 now it's better for us. 00:12:11.13\00:12:12.66 She took us on a tour of the classrooms. 00:12:12.66\00:12:15.13 Wow, look at all these. 00:12:15.13\00:12:16.90 Hello! 00:12:16.90\00:12:19.56 Each is filled with students busy learning, 00:12:19.56\00:12:22.53 not only the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, 00:12:22.53\00:12:25.63 but learning about the God who loves them. 00:12:25.63\00:12:29.63 Cazimir has three children enrolled in the school 00:12:29.63\00:12:32.36 and is so thankful that the earthquake didn't put 00:12:32.36\00:12:35.96 an end to their education. 00:12:35.96\00:12:38.30 I am happy. 00:12:38.30\00:12:41.16 I am happy for the education that the school, 00:12:41.16\00:12:42.96 they provide them, because specifically, you understand, 00:12:42.96\00:12:47.40 after this earthquake, it was very difficult. 00:12:47.40\00:12:53.66 And once you put the facilities now, it was like deliverance. 00:12:53.66\00:13:00.46 So, you allowed the school to work. 00:13:00.46\00:13:04.63 If it weren't for that, they would have to wait for another 00:13:04.63\00:13:07.13 year to go to school. 00:13:07.13\00:13:08.83 The teachers at La Source School make each student 00:13:08.83\00:13:11.86 feel valued. 00:13:11.86\00:13:13.23 They take their job of molding the children's lives 00:13:13.23\00:13:16.26 very seriously. 00:13:16.26\00:13:19.40 Because not only am I a teacher, 00:13:19.40\00:13:24.20 but I educate them spiritually, too. 00:13:24.20\00:13:28.60 Yeah, and you watch over them. 00:13:28.60\00:13:31.26 I give them advice, not only for school, 00:13:31.26\00:13:36.83 but for the life that they are going to lead. 00:13:36.83\00:13:41.43 And as a Seventh Day Adventist, 00:13:41.43\00:13:43.06 I know that I have the responsibility to teach, 00:13:43.06\00:13:50.13 to teach them everything that I believe and to teach everyone 00:13:50.13\00:13:54.86 that I meet. 00:13:54.86\00:13:56.90 Regicee is just one of the many committed 00:13:56.90\00:13:59.90 Christian educators in Haiti. 00:13:59.90\00:14:02.36 These teachers want to see their students grow to the full 00:14:02.36\00:14:05.06 potential, both academically and spiritually. 00:14:05.06\00:14:10.06 But as Dr. J.J. Pierre mentioned earlier, 00:14:10.06\00:14:12.53 you can have students, 00:14:12.53\00:14:14.10 and you can have teachers; but without proper classrooms, 00:14:14.10\00:14:17.43 it's hard for learning to take place. 00:14:17.43\00:14:21.46 More than 5,000 students all over Port-au-Prince were able to 00:14:21.46\00:14:25.30 continue their education in one-day structures. 00:14:25.30\00:14:29.30 But these structures were not originally intended to be used 00:14:29.30\00:14:32.00 as classrooms. 00:14:32.00\00:14:33.63 The new one-day school classrooms are a perfect fit 00:14:33.63\00:14:37.16 in Haiti. 00:14:37.16\00:14:38.63 They will create permanent places for children to receive 00:14:38.63\00:14:41.96 quality education. 00:14:41.96\00:14:45.06 We visited the site of the very first one-day school in Haiti. 00:14:45.06\00:14:48.50 When we arrived, students were diligently studying 00:14:48.50\00:14:51.33 in their old, broken-down classroom. 00:14:51.33\00:14:53.96 A shabby tarp is the only thing shading their heads. 00:14:53.96\00:14:57.23 The earthquake, it destroyed the classrooms, 00:14:57.23\00:15:00.56 and this is the only shelter in which they have to study. 00:15:00.56\00:15:04.16 What happens here when it rains? 00:15:22.80\00:15:27.56 That's awesome. 00:15:27.56\00:15:29.30 I love you said that word magnifique. 00:15:29.30\00:15:34.36 Because this is very good. 00:15:34.36\00:15:36.43 Yeah, see, you get good and then you get magnificent. 00:15:36.43\00:15:42.46 It's magnifique? 00:15:42.46\00:15:44.63 Oui oui, okay. 00:15:44.63\00:15:46.50 The students eagerly filed into their new classroom 00:15:46.50\00:15:49.00 and took their seats at the new desks. 00:15:49.00\00:15:57.63 These children represent the future of Haiti. 00:15:57.63\00:16:03.03 Many local church leaders came to witness the opening 00:16:03.03\00:16:05.53 of the first one-day school. 00:16:05.53\00:16:07.53 One of the pastors in attendance was Jean Mathieu 00:16:07.53\00:16:11.16 who is in charge of education for the Adventist Church 00:16:11.16\00:16:13.66 in South Haiti. 00:16:13.66\00:16:15.80 He came to take a look at the new building and was impressed 00:16:15.80\00:16:19.30 by what he saw. 00:16:19.30\00:16:20.70 You know, I love the look. 00:16:20.70\00:16:23.70 You see the kind of painting that we have, the windows. 00:16:23.70\00:16:30.70 This is high technology for us. 00:16:30.70\00:16:33.10 Yeah. 00:16:33.10\00:16:34.43 The one-day school, it will be a major upgrade compared 00:16:34.43\00:16:37.63 to their current facilities. 00:16:37.63\00:16:39.90 You have been asking for us to build schools 00:16:39.90\00:16:42.46 in your country. 00:16:42.46\00:16:44.83 [interpreter translating] 00:16:44.83\00:16:47.73 Yes. 00:16:47.73\00:16:49.06 How many? 00:16:49.06\00:16:53.36 Only 350 schools. 00:16:53.36\00:16:54.70 Now, the schools you have now, are they like this? 00:16:54.70\00:17:00.13 Yes, they are like this and under tarps. 00:17:00.13\00:17:08.33 So, they don't have real buildings. 00:17:08.33\00:17:12.76 No, no, no. 00:17:12.76\00:17:14.60 After seeing the new one-day school, 00:17:14.60\00:17:16.56 Pastor Matthew is excited about the opportunities the classrooms 00:17:16.56\00:17:19.80 can provide for the children in his area of Haiti. 00:17:19.80\00:17:23.70 If you move from a school like this 00:17:23.70\00:17:29.50 to a school like that, 00:17:29.50\00:17:33.00 how would your work change? 00:17:33.00\00:17:36.76 Oh, that would be amazing, because I think not only for 00:17:36.76\00:17:42.63 the church, for the children, but for all of the community. 00:17:42.63\00:17:47.10 That would be awesome. 00:17:47.10\00:17:50.40 Would more people send their children to your school? 00:17:50.40\00:17:55.66 Yes, I believe so, and I think that the way that 00:17:55.66\00:18:00.90 the building is, I have to tell you that around the community, 00:18:00.90\00:18:06.16 people, they are going to send all their kids to school here. 00:18:06.16\00:18:09.40 Why? 00:18:09.40\00:18:12.03 Because, first, even though we don't have an economy, 00:18:12.03\00:18:16.66 a lot of money to pay, even though we don't have a lot of 00:18:16.66\00:18:21.83 structure, good structure, but the people, they believe in us. 00:18:21.83\00:18:28.53 They believe in the way that we teach the children, 00:18:28.53\00:18:32.20 because intellectually it is right, but spiritually, too, 00:18:32.20\00:18:39.50 we help them. 00:18:39.50\00:18:41.76 Our teachers--because, you know, that they have--they are like 00:18:41.76\00:18:46.23 Christian, and they have moral standards to believe in us. 00:18:46.23\00:18:50.40 So, let me ask you another question. 00:18:50.40\00:18:52.16 If you have a Seventh Day Adventist School, 00:18:52.16\00:18:55.63 like the church, 00:18:55.63\00:19:01.40 will you have more baptisms? 00:19:01.40\00:19:05.60 Yes, I believe so, because not only the children, 00:19:05.60\00:19:10.56 but we have in Adventist schools, 00:19:10.56\00:19:15.20 we have a program to create every week. 00:19:15.20\00:19:22.53 We evangelize not only the children, but their parents. 00:19:22.53\00:19:26.53 And their parents come? 00:19:26.53\00:19:27.86 And their parents, they come. 00:19:27.86\00:19:30.56 The 350 schools Pastor Mathieu is requesting will not 00:19:30.56\00:19:33.60 only provide education for more than 14,000 students, 00:19:33.60\00:19:37.76 but each of them will serve as an evangelism center 00:19:37.76\00:19:42.00 in their community. 00:19:42.00\00:19:44.06 When we come back, see how schools encourage church growth 00:19:44.06\00:19:49.20 in Haiti. 00:19:49.20\00:19:52.13 [music] 00:19:52.60\00:19:58.93 [music] 00:20:02.06\00:20:17.06 It's easy to go on a Maranatha mission trip. 00:20:28.73\00:20:31.06 Simply visit Maranatha.org and click on the Volunteer 00:20:31.06\00:20:34.00 Opportunities tab for a complete list of upcoming projects. 00:20:34.00\00:20:38.00 Life-changing experiences are just a click 00:20:38.00\00:20:40.83 or a phone call away. 00:20:40.83\00:20:42.53 Are you ready to make a difference? 00:20:42.53\00:20:46.90 [music] 00:20:47.53\00:20:53.53 A few days later, Pastor Mathieu took us south 00:21:01.53\00:21:04.43 out of the city to show us some of the sites where he 00:21:04.43\00:21:07.20 would like to build schools. 00:21:07.20\00:21:09.30 Outside of town, the landscape changes. 00:21:09.30\00:21:12.03 Congested streets become sugar cane fields. 00:21:12.03\00:21:15.63 Life is simpler, but the need is the same. 00:21:15.63\00:21:22.50 The earthquake completely destroyed the structure, 00:21:22.50\00:21:25.20 so the members began meeting in a shelter they built 00:21:25.20\00:21:28.26 from poles and tarps. 00:21:28.26\00:21:30.60 Maranatha constructed several one-day church structures 00:21:30.60\00:21:33.80 to accommodate the large congregation. 00:21:33.80\00:21:36.30 The old shelter then became a classroom for the local 00:21:36.30\00:21:38.93 children, but far less than adequate, 00:21:38.93\00:21:43.00 and parents chose to send their children elsewhere. 00:21:43.00\00:21:46.30 Now the congregation has purchased the land behind their 00:21:46.30\00:21:48.73 church, and Maranatha supervisor Pastor Amador 00:21:48.73\00:21:52.80 is measuring and assessing the land. 00:21:52.80\00:21:56.80 Pastor Mathieu and the local church elder are excited about 00:21:56.80\00:22:00.63 the possibility of restoring their school. 00:22:00.63\00:22:04.70 The earthquake, it may have disrupted life, 00:22:04.70\00:22:07.73 but the schools Maranatha has built are helping rebuild 00:22:07.73\00:22:10.46 the country one student at a time. 00:22:10.46\00:22:15.10 Haiti's past is marked with tragedy, 00:22:15.10\00:22:18.66 but these children represent a brighter future. 00:22:18.66\00:22:24.30 More than 5,000 students have a safe environment to heal from 00:22:29.90\00:22:34.60 the trauma of the disaster and rise to their full potential 00:22:34.60\00:22:38.03 in Maranatha schools. 00:22:38.03\00:22:40.90 These schools are not just steel and concrete. 00:22:40.90\00:22:44.30 Look around. 00:22:44.30\00:22:45.96 We need your help to continue to invest in the lives of 00:22:45.96\00:22:50.53 tomorrow's leaders in Haiti. 00:22:50.53\00:22:56.70 [music] 00:22:57.90\00:23:04.40 [music] 00:23:06.36\00:23:13.86 In the village of Mathieu in the southern part of Haiti, 00:23:16.00\00:23:20.63 this is the source of the water of life. 00:23:20.63\00:23:23.56 And what I know for sure is that before the earthquake, 00:23:23.56\00:23:27.10 there were at least 300 people going to church here 00:23:27.10\00:23:30.20 and about 130 children in the elementary school, 00:23:30.20\00:23:32.60 The Adventist School Maranatha in the Village of Mathieu. 00:23:32.60\00:23:37.00 Then the earthquake came, and everything shifted overnight. 00:23:37.00\00:23:41.43 You can imagine, the entire church fell down. 00:23:41.43\00:23:44.20 That eliminated the church, and the school fell down. 00:23:44.20\00:23:47.36 And at that point, they had basically nothing. 00:23:47.36\00:23:51.16 Maranatha built the double church building. 00:23:51.16\00:23:54.80 People from the community then started worrying about what 00:23:54.80\00:23:57.36 was going to happen with the school and how fast. 00:23:57.36\00:24:00.13 And I'm not sure of all of those details. 00:24:00.13\00:24:02.40 What I do know is this. 00:24:02.40\00:24:04.20 We were here yesterday: 3 teachers, 00:24:04.20\00:24:06.96 30 students in the school. 00:24:06.96\00:24:09.23 We're here today: there's probably 280-300 people 00:24:09.23\00:24:13.46 in church. 00:24:13.46\00:24:14.90 And the pastor looks at me and says, "Pastor Dick, 00:24:14.90\00:24:18.96 we must have a school, because if you have a church without 00:24:18.96\00:24:24.70 a school, you have no church." 00:24:24.70\00:24:28.63 I thought about that so much. 00:24:28.63\00:24:31.13 Every day we hear new, additional, brighter, 00:24:31.13\00:24:34.93 eager requests from the people of Haiti. 00:24:34.93\00:24:37.93 "We'd like a school here. We'd like a school there. 00:24:37.93\00:24:39.96 We'd like a school there." 00:24:39.96\00:24:41.30 Yeah, they talk about churches, but they always talk about the 00:24:41.30\00:24:43.63 school first, because in Haiti, the success of your school 00:24:43.63\00:24:50.23 predicts the success of your church. 00:24:50.23\00:24:53.93 Three hundred and fifty schools requested just in the south, 00:24:53.93\00:24:58.43 many more around the city itself in Port-au-Prince; 00:24:58.43\00:25:02.03 and once you get north up in the mountains, 00:25:02.03\00:25:05.43 there's the same request: "We want a school, 00:25:05.43\00:25:09.36 so we can have a church." 00:25:09.36\00:25:13.10 When Jesus was talking about lost things--you remember, 00:25:13.10\00:25:16.70 recorded well as lost coin, lost sheep, 00:25:16.70\00:25:19.50 lost boy--the lost sheep one is my favorite. 00:25:19.50\00:25:25.10 Ninety and nine were home. 00:25:25.10\00:25:27.70 There was one missing. 00:25:27.70\00:25:29.46 I asked the pastor, "Why do you have schools?" 00:25:29.46\00:25:31.76 "Because that's the way we find the lost lambs." 00:25:31.76\00:25:37.43 Maranatha's work is to find lost lambs by providing 00:25:37.43\00:25:43.76 the capability in a community for exactly that to happen. 00:25:43.76\00:25:49.80 And what I love most about is that we don't ever do it alone. 00:25:49.80\00:25:53.00 We do it together with a community, 00:25:53.00\00:25:56.23 a community of believers and non-believers who want their 00:25:56.23\00:25:59.90 kids to know Jesus. 00:25:59.90\00:26:02.30 You can help with that. 00:26:02.30\00:26:04.30 Thank you for what you have done; but even more, 00:26:04.30\00:26:06.73 thank you for what I know you're going to do next. 00:26:06.73\00:26:10.66 Because when Jesus finished the story about the lost sheep, 00:26:10.66\00:26:17.26 remember what he said? 00:26:17.26\00:26:19.13 Now let me tell you the story about the prodigal, 00:26:19.13\00:26:22.93 a son who is so dearly loved by his father, 00:26:22.93\00:26:27.26 that his father will give up everything so that the boy 00:26:27.26\00:26:29.76 can come home. 00:26:29.76\00:26:31.63 That's what we're doing here. 00:26:31.63\00:26:33.60 We're providing schools for sheep, boys, girls, 00:26:33.60\00:26:37.06 for a kingdom that needs to be packed with God's kids. 00:26:37.06\00:26:44.60 Help the people of Haiti today. 00:26:44.60\00:26:47.10 Call our toll free number now at 800-467-6384. 00:26:47.10\00:26:52.40 Your gift will change lives by providing places 00:26:52.40\00:26:55.26 to learn and worship. 00:26:55.26\00:26:57.23 Visit our website at Maranatha.org to donate, 00:26:57.23\00:27:00.83 or send your gift in the mail 00:27:00.83\00:27:02.50 to Maranatha Volunteers International, 00:27:02.50\00:27:05.36 990 Reserve Drive, Suite 100, 00:27:05.36\00:27:08.26 Roseville, CA 95678. 00:27:08.26\00:27:11.86 Thank you for supporting Haiti. 00:27:11.86\00:27:13.93 Our toll free number is 800-467-6384. 00:27:13.93\00:27:18.96 Our website is Maranatha.org. 00:27:18.96\00:27:23.33 I'm Dick Duerksen, host of Maranatha Mission Stories, 00:27:24.33\00:27:26.66 and I want to thank you for joining us this week 00:27:26.66\00:27:28.86 in the country of Haiti. 00:27:28.86\00:27:30.33 Even more, I want to thank you for what you have done to make 00:27:30.33\00:27:33.66 it possible for the water of life to flow through these 00:27:33.66\00:27:37.36 schools to huge communities all around the country. 00:27:37.36\00:27:42.13 It's a little miracle we're doing. 00:27:42.13\00:27:44.00 I'm glad to be part of it. 00:27:44.00\00:27:45.53 Don't know where we'll be next week, 00:27:45.53\00:27:47.06 but I want to invite you to be sure and join us on 00:27:47.06\00:27:49.86 Maranatha Mission Stories. 00:27:49.86\00:27:53.96 [music] 00:27:55.90\00:27:56.90
