[music] 00:00:07.86\00:00:22.56 From the trailers and RVs behind me you might think I'm 00:00:30.93\00:00:34.23 in a national park, but this is typical for a stateside 00:00:34.23\00:00:38.40 Maranatha Volunteers International project. 00:00:38.40\00:00:41.80 Traveling from home to a Maranatha project somewhere 00:00:41.80\00:00:44.56 in North America, it's still an integral part of Maranatha's 00:00:44.56\00:00:48.66 volunteer opportunities. 00:00:48.66\00:00:50.53 Some of our volunteers they stay in motels, 00:00:50.53\00:00:53.70 others they stay in the homes of friends, 00:00:53.70\00:00:55.93 but most they just hook up the trailer, pack up the RV, 00:00:55.93\00:01:01.13 and head off into a world of service. 00:01:01.13\00:01:04.53 In just a few moments we'll meet one of the couples who has come 00:01:04.53\00:01:07.56 here to Florida. 00:01:07.56\00:01:09.00 But first, here's what's happening today 00:01:09.00\00:01:11.50 in Maranatha's world. 00:01:11.50\00:01:16.93 Thirty-five volunteers finished construction on a new 00:01:17.53\00:01:19.83 school campus at an existing school in New Delhi, India. 00:01:19.83\00:01:23.70 Volunteers have built 7 One-Day classrooms in a cluster, 00:01:23.70\00:01:26.80 revitalizing the long term commitment of the 00:01:26.80\00:01:29.50 Southern Asian Division to education in this region. 00:01:29.50\00:01:33.06 An Ultimate Workout leadership team recently spent a week 00:01:33.06\00:01:36.13 on the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua, 00:01:36.13\00:01:38.00 determining final locations for this summer's Ultimate Workout. 00:01:38.00\00:01:42.23 If you know a team looking for the adventure of a lifetime, 00:01:42.23\00:01:44.93 please have them sign up at MARANATHA.ORG. 00:01:44.93\00:01:48.30 The "Maranatha Mission Stories'" production team just returned 00:01:48.30\00:01:51.46 from Honduras where they documented the inauguration of 00:01:51.46\00:01:54.60 the Choluteca school campus. 00:01:54.60\00:01:56.70 More than 800 volunteers have made their way to Honduras to 00:01:56.70\00:02:00.13 make this school a reality. 00:02:00.13\00:02:02.56 This month volunteers have begun work on the CEA school, 00:02:02.56\00:02:05.83 a new project similar in scope. 00:02:05.83\00:02:08.23 Watch "Maranatha Mission Stories" every week for 00:02:08.23\00:02:10.40 the latest mission news. 00:02:10.40\00:02:12.10 And thank you for your support. 00:02:12.10\00:02:17.10 Twenty years ago Maranatha embarked on a project in 00:02:22.70\00:02:25.60 the Dominican Republic that would forever alter the course 00:02:25.60\00:02:28.66 of the organization, Santo Domingo '92. 00:02:28.66\00:02:32.73 Twelve hundred volunteers built twenty-five brick-and-mortar 00:02:32.73\00:02:35.46 churches in just seventy days. 00:02:35.46\00:02:38.56 Never before had Maranatha attempted to coordinate 00:02:38.56\00:02:40.76 a project of this size. 00:02:40.76\00:02:42.90 And volunteers from around the world descended on Santo Domingo 00:02:42.90\00:02:46.53 to be a part of Maranatha history. 00:02:46.53\00:02:49.66 Each day they traveled to their job sites to lay block, 00:02:49.66\00:02:52.20 roof, tile, and paint. 00:02:52.20\00:02:54.83 At new churches, lifetime friendships were formed 00:02:54.83\00:02:57.63 as the volunteers and locals worked side-by-side. 00:02:57.63\00:03:01.46 Twenty years later the impact of this project can still be seen. 00:03:01.46\00:03:05.73 Adventist church membership in the Dominican Republic has 00:03:05.73\00:03:08.33 tripled as God continues to bless the work that was started 00:03:08.33\00:03:12.36 in Santo Domingo. 00:03:12.36\00:03:15.56 Let's take a moment for an update on Maranatha's 00:03:15.56\00:03:17.66 upcoming projects. 00:03:17.66\00:03:20.80 Have you always thought that it would be fun to go on 00:03:20.80\00:03:22.66 a Maranatha project if you had the right skills? 00:03:22.66\00:03:26.40 Don't worry. 00:07:35.80\00:07:39.66 We talked to Roger Hatch project coordinator and asked 00:07:41.30\00:07:44.26 how he had to do any special preparation for 00:07:44.26\00:07:47.00 a stateside project. 00:07:47.00\00:07:50.36 Well, U.S. projects, by and large, 00:07:50.36\00:07:54.23 are quite different than what they are 00:07:54.23\00:07:56.56 out of The States. 00:07:56.56\00:07:58.66 First of all, usually you need permits. 00:07:58.66\00:08:01.73 You need plans. 00:08:01.73\00:08:03.66 And those all have to be approved by local authorities. 00:08:03.66\00:08:07.40 And that's one of the first things that happens. 00:08:07.40\00:08:11.20 Next thing most of the projects here in The States needs 00:08:11.20\00:08:17.43 leadership that is very familiar with the codes and so forth. 00:08:17.43\00:08:23.10 So, now then you've got to have experienced leaders that 00:08:23.10\00:08:26.40 understand the codes. 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.93 Does that mean that everybody has to be skilled? 00:08:28.93\00:08:30.93 Absolutely not. 00:08:30.93\00:08:32.53 They just have to be willing. 00:08:32.53\00:08:34.13 We can use any willing able bodied person that can swing 00:08:34.13\00:08:39.53 a hammer or do electrical work, and so forth. 00:08:39.53\00:08:43.36 How does this help the church? 00:08:43.36\00:08:45.26 Well, it saves the labor. 00:08:45.26\00:08:47.53 And labor is a big part of any project. 00:08:47.53\00:08:50.93 When we do projects like this we usually talk about carpenter 00:08:50.93\00:08:56.83 work, and siding, setting windows, setting doors, 00:08:56.83\00:09:01.86 putting siding on a building, roof. 00:09:01.86\00:09:10.76 The replacing of the roof may have been the most notable 00:09:16.36\00:09:19.26 change, but there was also a buzz of activity on the ground. 00:09:19.26\00:09:25.26 The attraction of a stateside trip as far as I'm concerned is 00:09:32.66\00:09:38.03 that we purchased a motorhome the first year we were married, 00:09:38.03\00:09:43.70 and so we were able to utilize that in traveling to 00:09:43.70\00:09:50.16 the different projects. 00:09:50.16\00:09:54.30 We have been able to see parts of The United States that I had 00:09:54.30\00:09:59.06 never seen before. 00:09:59.06\00:10:00.96 Meet people that I'd never met before. 00:10:00.96\00:10:05.66 And it's wonderful to have friends just all over 00:10:05.66\00:10:11.30 The United States as well as the world. 00:10:11.30\00:10:14.66 This Tampa Bay project gave volunteers a unique opportunity 00:10:14.66\00:10:17.93 to experience Jewish culture. 00:10:17.93\00:10:23.93 What I enjoyed in the service is the participation 00:10:23.93\00:10:29.43 of the congregation. 00:10:29.43\00:10:32.10 How they blend their voices in and sing praises to God 00:10:32.10\00:10:38.36 in their own custom ways that they do that. 00:10:38.36\00:10:46.80 The Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventist planted 00:10:46.80\00:10:49.10 these two Messianic Jewish Adventist congregations 00:10:49.10\00:10:52.36 in Saint Petersburg and New Port Richey. 00:10:52.36\00:10:55.90 The remodeling the volunteers did that will help enhance 00:10:55.90\00:10:59.83 the ability of the ministry to reach their community. 00:10:59.83\00:11:08.86 That Saint Petersburg the main thing was putting 00:11:16.56\00:11:18.83 a new roof on the sanctuary and putting siding--new siding. 00:11:18.83\00:11:24.23 Tearing the old siding off. 00:11:24.23\00:11:25.76 Putting new siding on their classrooms. 00:11:25.76\00:11:29.36 And fixing up a garage so that they could make a classroom 00:11:29.36\00:11:33.90 out of it. 00:11:33.90\00:11:35.93 Here we're taking out some walls and opening up an area 00:11:35.93\00:11:39.20 for fellowship. 00:11:39.20\00:11:41.26 And doing some stucco work on the inside of the church. 00:11:41.26\00:11:46.16 Security lights, repairing doors that don't work, 00:11:46.16\00:11:50.36 and door closers that don't work, 00:11:50.36\00:11:52.33 and drinking fountain that don't work. 00:11:52.33\00:11:54.00 The list goes on and on. 00:11:54.00\00:11:56.60 So, we got the majority of the shingles on. 00:11:56.60\00:11:59.50 If you come out here, you can see that wall back there. 00:11:59.50\00:12:08.20 We had to tear off all the stuff they had on there, 00:12:08.20\00:12:15.23 'cause it was pulling away from the wall. 00:12:15.23\00:12:18.10 So, we stripped that all off. 00:12:18.10\00:12:19.83 And we re-stuccoed, kind of smoothed out the wall. 00:12:19.83\00:12:24.16 We drove 1,100 miles from Michigan to get here. 00:12:24.16\00:12:29.70 It took us 2 days. 00:12:29.70\00:12:31.50 I came here on this project--I thought I might be doing 00:12:31.50\00:12:33.76 some roofing, might be doing some painting. 00:12:33.76\00:12:36.03 And I ended up power washing a fence, 00:12:36.03\00:12:39.06 taking the paint off and power washing this shed behind me. 00:12:39.06\00:12:43.16 I thought I was signing up for a project in Florida to do-- 00:12:43.16\00:12:47.23 play in the sun, play in the water, and have a good time. 00:12:47.23\00:12:51.43 I didn't think I'd be power washing. 00:12:51.43\00:12:53.80 Oh, that Harry. 00:12:53.80\00:12:55.50 He hates the beach. 00:12:55.50\00:12:57.40 He is such a joker. 00:12:57.40\00:12:59.46 Great group. 00:12:59.46\00:13:00.86 We've really appreciated working with all the Maranatha people. 00:13:00.86\00:13:03.56 It's been tremendous. 00:13:03.56\00:13:04.93 Every time we go to--go on a Maranatha, 00:13:04.93\00:13:06.93 Joel will say I wonder who we're gonna know. 00:13:06.93\00:13:09.70 And that means so much to him. 00:13:09.70\00:13:13.26 The interaction between people of every walk of life, 00:13:13.26\00:13:16.90 every background, and all of a sudden you are just 00:13:16.90\00:13:21.70 one big family. 00:13:21.70\00:13:23.36 There's no better way to serve the Lord. 00:13:23.36\00:13:25.33 If a person can find the time to do it, 00:13:25.33\00:13:27.23 and there's no better way to meet new friends. 00:13:27.23\00:13:32.63 And to keep in touch with old friends. 00:13:32.63\00:13:35.33 It is just a wonderful way of life. 00:13:35.33\00:13:37.86 And I highly recommend it. 00:13:37.86\00:13:43.80 That's cool. 00:13:50.96\00:13:52.13 So, how many trips have you actually been on? 00:13:52.13\00:13:53.73 This is just our third. 00:13:53.73\00:13:55.10 Just your third? 00:13:55.10\00:13:56.26 Yeah. 00:13:56.26\00:13:57.60 But you've got-- 00:13:57.60\00:14:00.40 We've got the fever. 00:14:00.40\00:14:03.03 Okay. 00:14:03.03\00:14:04.63 So, I want you to tell me about your Navion and why that is such 00:14:04.63\00:14:08.20 an important part of your life? 00:14:08.20\00:14:10.50 Well, we love to travel. 00:14:10.50\00:14:12.63 And we can get 16 miles to the gallon if I keep my foot a 00:14:12.63\00:14:16.50 little light on the accelerator and keep it down around 55. 00:14:16.50\00:14:20.40 So, you can actually get 16 at 55? 00:14:20.40\00:14:22.70 I can get 16 at 55. 00:14:22.70\00:14:24.46 And I can get 15 at 65. 00:14:24.46\00:14:26.63 I'm impressed. 00:14:26.63\00:14:28.13 And so you're able to travel a long ways actually 00:14:28.13\00:14:30.00 at a fairly inexpensive rate. 00:14:30.00\00:14:32.56 But and you have a full cafeteria inside? 00:14:32.56\00:14:35.60 Oh, yes. 00:14:35.60\00:14:37.56 There's sufficient things in there for me to use to prepare 00:14:37.56\00:14:41.73 a pretty decent meal. 00:14:41.73\00:14:44.00 What have you enjoyed most about this trip? 00:14:44.00\00:14:46.46 Well, maybe the best thing is meeting new people that we 00:14:46.46\00:14:48.50 hadn't met before. 00:14:48.50\00:14:50.43 That's always fun. 00:14:50.43\00:14:51.96 But the camaraderie of Maranatha, 00:14:51.96\00:14:55.23 the trips is wonderful. 00:14:55.23\00:14:56.90 It's catching. 00:14:56.90\00:14:58.73 Where did you start? You're welcome. 00:18:26.26\00:18:27.93 Well, okay. 00:18:27.93\00:18:29.33 Nosoca Pines is next. 00:18:29.33\00:18:30.76 So, are you gonna have a trailer behind you then? 00:18:30.76\00:18:32.70 I think so. 00:18:32.70\00:18:34.03 I've already--I almost bought one over here the other day 00:18:34.03\00:18:35.93 and she talked me out of it. 00:18:35.93\00:18:37.76 Well, you can always just put more tools in your trunk. 00:18:37.76\00:18:40.50 I've got a luggage carrier on the back there. 00:18:40.50\00:18:44.16 And when we came over here we brought sheets and blankets 00:18:44.16\00:18:48.83 and all the silverware and the dishes that you see in there. 00:18:48.83\00:18:53.03 She collected through our church, 00:18:53.03\00:18:55.33 advertising in our church we need all this stuff. 00:18:55.33\00:18:57.53 Roger brought a load over early. 00:18:57.53\00:18:59.30 This thing--the bed was covered. 00:18:59.30\00:19:02.26 She had the back of that wagon so full she could--had to hold 00:19:02.26\00:19:05.60 it and close the door. 00:19:05.60\00:19:07.50 So, when you go you basically are self-contained. 00:19:07.50\00:19:11.03 But you're a little more than that. 00:19:11.03\00:19:12.73 You're self-contained, but you're project centered. 00:19:12.73\00:19:14.93 Whatever's needed. 00:19:14.93\00:19:16.53 Whatever's needed. 00:19:16.53\00:19:19.43 What a neat way to describe Maranatha. 00:19:19.43\00:19:21.50 This group, as I've noticed all Maranatha groups, 00:19:21.50\00:19:24.80 you tend to get together and talk about spiritual things 00:19:24.80\00:19:27.43 that are important. 00:19:27.43\00:19:29.16 What have you learned spiritually from this experience 00:19:29.16\00:19:31.30 on this trip? 00:19:31.30\00:19:33.00 We've had some really good worships. 00:19:33.00\00:19:34.80 And some interesting, you know, people relating some interesting 00:19:34.80\00:19:38.00 things that happened in their lives. 00:19:38.00\00:19:40.20 And so, it's that kind of a personal testimony, 00:19:40.20\00:19:42.83 "This is where God is with me," that encourages you. 00:19:42.83\00:19:45.36 Well, the interesting thing is here is that we have a rabbi, 00:19:45.36\00:19:50.56 Rabbi Jeff that we're working with. 00:19:50.56\00:19:52.26 And we're finding out a lot about the Jewish heritage and he 00:19:52.26\00:19:56.66 talked to us, gave us a little bit of background, 00:19:56.66\00:19:58.70 and one of our vespers he conducted and we learned a lot 00:19:58.70\00:20:03.33 about the Jewish religion. 00:20:03.33\00:20:05.83 I guess it'd be called a religion. 00:20:05.83\00:20:08.20 And we've gone to a few of their meetings. 00:20:08.20\00:20:10.30 Good. Good. 00:20:10.30\00:20:11.60 Did you get to carry the Torah? 00:20:11.60\00:20:13.26 No. 00:20:13.26\00:20:14.36 Dave got to do that. 00:20:14.36\00:20:15.56 Good. Good. 00:20:15.56\00:20:17.00 The other day I was in one of the states in the center 00:20:17.00\00:20:19.13 United States and met with several folk at a church 00:20:19.13\00:20:21.76 who said, "Well, we'd like to come on a project, 00:20:21.76\00:20:24.63 but we're just not sure that we would be any value. 00:20:24.63\00:20:27.00 What would we do?" 00:20:27.00\00:20:28.93 I don't think they need to worry about it. 00:20:28.93\00:20:30.66 They can find something for you to do. 00:20:30.66\00:20:32.70 There's always something? 00:20:32.70\00:20:33.96 I think there's always something to do. 00:20:33.96\00:20:35.86 I mean, some people aren't skilled, but they learn skills. 00:20:35.86\00:20:39.83 And there's a lot of things here that you can learn. 00:20:39.83\00:20:42.73 There's a lot of times when you need a goffer. 00:20:42.73\00:20:44.63 Like somebody to do housekeeping? 00:24:28.03\00:24:31.06 The other one I wanted to get to, though, 00:24:31.06\00:24:33.26 is the one in the Greek Scripture. 00:24:33.26\00:24:37.03 It's that day when Jesus was walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus 00:24:37.03\00:24:42.33 and we do know what they talked about. 00:24:42.33\00:24:45.63 It's a bit of a memory right there. 00:24:45.63\00:24:47.76 They don't know who it is, but as they're walking along they 00:24:47.76\00:24:50.66 start complaining about life. 00:24:50.66\00:24:53.40 And Jesus says, "Do you know what's been happening?" 00:24:53.40\00:25:00.26 They didn't. 00:25:00.26\00:25:01.86 They didn't have any idea. 00:25:01.86\00:25:03.86 And so he explained the plan of salvation. 00:25:03.86\00:25:07.46 He began clear back at the beginning, 00:25:07.46\00:25:09.36 back in Eden with Adam and Eve, all the way up through Moses, 00:25:09.36\00:25:12.80 all the way through David, and then he stopped and focused 00:25:12.80\00:25:17.43 totally on what was going on in Jerusalem. 00:25:17.43\00:25:21.26 How the Messiah was going to come. 00:25:21.26\00:25:23.73 The Messiah was going to die, and the Messiah was going to 00:25:23.73\00:25:26.90 live again. 00:25:26.90\00:25:28.93 That's the part of the story I would love to have heard. 00:25:28.93\00:25:32.23 Didn't matter what was going on around him, dogs barking, 00:25:32.23\00:25:34.46 people running, Romans shouting. 00:25:34.46\00:25:36.43 It made no difference at all. 00:25:36.43\00:25:38.06 All they heard was Jesus came to die for my sins. 00:25:38.06\00:25:43.86 And because of him I can plan for the resurrection. 00:25:43.86\00:25:50.03 It's the greatest message in Scripture. 00:25:50.03\00:25:52.43 Jesus' own voice telling it to two disciples who had 00:25:52.43\00:25:57.70 the good sense to tell it to you and me. 00:25:57.70\00:26:04.10 So, on Maranatha projects I listen a lot to what 00:26:04.10\00:26:06.76 the volunteers talk about. 00:26:06.76\00:26:08.53 They talk about everything. 00:26:08.53\00:26:10.06 They talk about football games. 00:26:10.06\00:26:11.50 They talk about skydiving. 00:26:11.50\00:26:13.63 They talk about why do cars work and don't work. 00:26:13.63\00:26:15.76 They talk about a thousand things, 00:26:15.76\00:26:17.06 including how many drills it takes to do the job. 00:26:17.06\00:26:22.13 But when the light goes down, you know what they're 00:26:22.13\00:26:25.66 talking about? 00:26:25.66\00:26:27.33 The plan of salvation. 00:26:27.33\00:26:29.03 It's as if Jesus is right there with them. 00:26:29.03\00:26:31.10 And you can see the tears begin to flow as they dig deeper 00:26:31.10\00:26:33.70 into the book. 00:26:33.70\00:26:35.73 And in the book fall in love again. 00:26:35.73\00:26:43.06 Maranatha needs your continued support to build more 00:26:45.70\00:26:47.93 churches and schools for the growing Adventist church 00:26:47.93\00:26:50.63 around the world. 00:26:50.63\00:26:52.00 For more information on how you can get involved, 00:26:52.00\00:26:53.96 call 800-467-6386. 00:26:53.96\00:26:58.06 Or you can visit our website at MARANATHA.ORG for information on 00:26:58.06\00:27:02.20 upcoming volunteer opportunities or to donate online. 00:27:02.20\00:27:06.00 You can also send your gift in the mail to 00:27:06.00\00:27:08.33 Maranatha Volunteers International, 00:27:08.33\00:27:10.66 990 Reserve Drive, Suite 100, 00:27:10.66\00:27:13.20 Roseville, California, 95678. 00:27:13.20\00:27:16.46 Thank you for your support. 00:27:16.46\00:27:18.10 Our website is MARANATHA.ORG. 00:27:18.10\00:27:22.20 Wow Sadie, it's exciting out here. 00:27:28.23\00:27:30.23 It is. 00:27:30.23\00:27:31.60 Thank you for coming. 00:27:31.60\00:27:32.96 Thank you. 00:27:32.96\00:27:34.30 I'm Dick Duerksen host of "Maranatha Mission Stories." 00:27:34.30\00:27:35.63 Thanks for joining us today. 00:27:35.63\00:27:36.96 We're here at Tampa, Florida. 00:27:36.96\00:27:38.50 Next week somewhere wonderful. 00:27:38.50\00:27:40.40 Be sure and join us on "Maranatha Mission Stories." 00:27:40.40\00:27:45.36 [music] 00:27:47.40\00:28:02.46
