More on that later in the program, but right now, 00:00:06.16\00:00:09.40 we want you to be among the first to see what just happened 00:00:09.40\00:00:12.63 in Haiti in the past few weeks. 00:00:12.63\00:00:15.36 Pastor Ted Wilson, 00:00:15.36\00:00:16.80 president of the Seventh-day Adventist World Church, 00:00:16.80\00:00:19.13 and his wife, Nancy, made a special visit to Haiti 00:00:19.13\00:00:21.80 and were able to participate in celebrations of dedication 00:00:21.80\00:00:25.30 and recommitment in key places where Maranatha Volunteers 00:00:25.30\00:00:28.66 International has had the privilege to serve. 00:00:28.66\00:00:32.16 One of the first stops the Wilsons made was at 00:00:32.16\00:00:34.60 the Christ-Roi Church in the hills of Port-au-Prince. 00:00:34.60\00:00:37.66 Where this One-Day Church stands, 00:00:37.66\00:00:39.60 a large concrete structure once stood, 00:00:39.60\00:00:42.03 a church that had only just been dedicated when the earthquake 00:00:42.03\00:00:45.33 destroyed it. 00:00:45.33\00:00:47.26 Maranatha's president, Don Noble, 00:00:47.26\00:00:48.93 and our vice president for Latin America, Darrell Hardy, 00:00:48.93\00:00:52.23 were at the church prior to the Wilson's visit. 00:00:52.23\00:00:55.70 Darrell, our first visit here to the Christ-Roi Church 00:00:55.70\00:00:58.26 in Haiti was very different than it is today. 00:00:58.26\00:01:01.13 Today is a day of celebration, and that was a day of 00:01:01.13\00:01:02.70 devastation and heartbreak as we came here and saw this 00:01:02.70\00:01:06.36 brand-new church in a heap of rubble. 00:01:06.36\00:01:10.80 Yeah, the members have told the story that they finished 00:01:10.80\00:01:13.60 the church about a month ahead of time, 00:01:13.60\00:01:15.13 eek 00:01:15.13\00:01:18.36 and they had a mid service, a Sabbath service, 00:01:15.13\00:01:18.36 and a Sunday service, and the earthquake came. 00:01:18.36\00:01:20.53 So their brand-new church was used very little. 00:01:20.53\00:01:23.30 So they basically had one Sabbath in the brand-new church 00:01:23.30\00:01:26.23 and the devastation of it coming down. 00:01:26.23\00:01:29.40 Right. 00:01:29.40\00:01:30.76 We saw the pictures out there that they had taken ahead of 00:01:30.76\00:01:32.70 time and the rubble resembled--I mean, 00:01:32.70\00:01:34.93 you couldn't even imagine it was that nice. 00:01:34.93\00:01:36.93 Exactly. 00:01:36.93\00:01:38.33 And fortunately, God bless, we were able to send One-Day Church 00:01:38.33\00:01:42.30 structures down. 00:01:42.30\00:01:43.80 The church hadn't met for another two months, 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.63 as I understand it; is that correct? 00:01:45.63\00:01:47.13 Yes. 00:01:47.13\00:01:48.46 They worked two months without any meeting, not in a home, 00:01:48.46\00:01:50.66 anywhere, zero. 00:01:50.66\00:01:52.00 When we came to do it, they told us. 00:01:52.00\00:01:53.83 We were not aware of it, but it was a huge--they were 00:01:53.83\00:01:56.33 so excited. 00:01:56.33\00:01:57.66 It was done on a Friday afternoon. 00:01:57.66\00:01:59.16 And Sabbath, they had church service. 00:01:59.16\00:02:00.56 Fifteen members from the community, just neighbors, 00:02:00.56\00:02:02.06 came to be with them that day to celebrate 00:02:02.06\00:02:04.06 having a place to worship. 00:02:04.06\00:02:05.40 Yeah, it's great. 00:02:05.40\00:02:06.73 And you can see here that they've expanded off to the side 00:02:06.73\00:02:09.23 of the One-Day structure here, because so many people 00:02:09.23\00:02:11.23 are showing up. 00:02:11.23\00:02:12.56 They're excited. 00:02:12.56\00:02:13.90 They're doing well. 00:02:13.90\00:02:15.23 On both sides. 00:02:15.23\00:02:16.56 Actually, this One-Day Church we put three extra bays on it, 00:02:16.56\00:02:18.56 because that's what would fit, because they had a large 00:02:18.56\00:02:20.56 congregation, so this is a One-Day Church, a larger one. 00:02:20.56\00:02:22.56 And a growing congregation. 00:02:22.56\00:02:23.90 And a growing one. 00:02:23.90\00:02:25.23 And their commitment is to be the first church here in 00:02:25.23\00:02:27.56 Port-au-Prince that rebuilds like their original church. 00:02:27.56\00:02:33.03 That's super, because it's great to see the One-Day Church 00:02:33.03\00:02:35.53 soon going to have its use--it's going to be done with the use. 00:02:35.53\00:02:39.50 We'll take it down and put it up somewhere else, 00:02:39.50\00:02:41.70 so another church can benefit from it. 00:02:41.70\00:02:43.33 And they'll find a way, because God knows how to do it, 00:02:43.33\00:02:46.40 but they've got the energy. 00:02:46.40\00:02:47.73 They made the decision, the determination 00:02:47.73\00:02:49.06 that they're going to do it. 00:02:49.06\00:02:50.40 So that's a good share of the battle. 00:02:50.40\00:02:51.90 The Wilsons arrived to a Pathfinder greeting, 00:02:51.90\00:02:54.26 shared a message of encouragement, 00:02:54.26\00:02:57.30 and then laid the ceremonial first stone for the permanent 00:02:57.30\00:03:00.10 church building that the congregation has determined 00:03:00.10\00:03:02.73 to erect in faith. 00:03:02.73\00:03:05.36 We're here at the Christ-Roi Church, 00:03:05.36\00:03:10.03 which means Christ the King. 00:03:10.03\00:03:12.23 And they were without a church after the terrible earthquake 00:03:12.23\00:03:14.90 for about two months. 00:03:14.90\00:03:17.36 Maranatha Volunteers came and provided them with a One-Day 00:03:17.36\00:03:21.00 Church and it has made the difference between literally 00:03:21.00\00:03:25.26 life and death. 00:03:25.26\00:03:26.90 Spiritual life has now been given to this community and 00:03:26.90\00:03:30.50 it's given them the beautiful opportunity of now 00:03:30.50\00:03:33.86 reconstructing their permanent church because of the sacrifice 00:03:33.86\00:03:38.53 and the ingenuity of Maranatha Volunteers to help them 00:03:38.53\00:03:43.33 in a great time of need. 00:03:43.33\00:03:45.40 Thank you so much for what you've done for Christ-Roi, 00:03:45.40\00:03:49.30 Christ the King church, here in Haiti. 00:03:49.30\00:03:54.50 When we come back, you won't believe the transformation on 00:03:54.50\00:03:58.63 the university campus. 00:03:58.63\00:04:00.36 And if you have friends or family that want to see 00:04:00.36\00:04:02.56 this program but don't subscribe to this network, 00:04:02.56\00:04:05.40 please send them to our website, maranatha.org. 00:04:05.40\00:04:09.73 Everything you see here, you can see there. 00:04:09.73\00:04:13.76 [music] 00:04:16.76\00:04:31.76 [music] 00:05:21.70\00:05:36.70 Soon after the earthquake, the Adventist University in 00:06:17.96\00:06:20.66 Port-au-Prince became a temporary home for 00:06:20.66\00:06:23.03 thousands of displaced people. 00:06:23.03\00:06:25.56 This is the university today. 00:06:25.56\00:06:27.80 Early in February, Pastor Ted Wilson spent 00:06:27.80\00:06:30.76 the better part of a day on the campus. 00:06:30.76\00:06:33.16 He encouraged the students to prepare not only to serve their 00:06:33.16\00:06:36.16 neighbors, but also to prepare for Jesus soon coming. 00:06:36.16\00:06:42.33 Although the wall surrounding the university wasn't part of 00:06:42.33\00:06:44.63 the world church president's tour, 00:06:44.63\00:06:47.06 the added security it brings to the campus was felt. 00:06:47.06\00:06:50.90 Don Noble spoke with Darrell Hardy about this mammoth 00:06:50.90\00:06:53.63 construction project. 00:06:53.63\00:06:55.53 Darrell, I'm looking at an incredible project that you and 00:06:55.53\00:07:01.33 your guys have done here at the university in Haiti, this wall. 00:07:01.33\00:07:05.10 Wow. 00:07:05.10\00:07:09.93 I mean, looking down here, it is How long is this thing? 00:07:09.93\00:07:11.33 How much have you built? 00:07:11.33\00:07:12.76 We built eight-tenths of a mile in total, 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.36 divided in 19 sections. 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.56 Because of the way we worked and different things and time frame 00:07:16.56\00:07:18.86 and then seasons, in those 19 sections, 00:07:18.86\00:07:21.93 there's been 9 sections that have actually ended up 00:07:21.93\00:07:23.70 being together. 00:07:23.70\00:07:25.20 So it's a continuous wall of 4,220 feet, of which this, 00:07:25.20\00:07:27.83 what we see in each direction is a part of that. 00:07:27.83\00:07:29.86 So that is the largest section now of full wall 00:07:29.86\00:07:32.23 at the university. 00:07:32.23\00:07:33.80 All fallen walls have been rebuilt, 00:07:33.80\00:07:36.40 so the university is totally enclosed now. 00:07:36.40\00:07:38.76 Well, that's great. 00:07:38.76\00:07:40.23 It also seems like it's pretty high. 00:07:40.23\00:07:42.43 It ranges from 10 feet to 14 feet in height. 00:07:42.43\00:07:46.66 And I was watching earlier when you were constructing it, 00:07:46.66\00:07:50.16 you've got quite a bit underground, too. 00:07:50.16\00:07:52.60 There's a lot of steel in the pads. 00:07:52.60\00:07:54.86 I poured concrete grade beams, so all the block are above 00:07:54.86\00:07:57.13 grade, above the dirt. 00:07:57.13\00:07:59.93 The columns, rebar in it, horizontally, vertically. 00:07:59.93\00:08:03.23 There's a lot of steel in this wall. 00:08:03.23\00:08:05.16 The foundation is 4 to 5 feet underground. 00:08:05.16\00:08:08.13 So if another earthquake came of the same magnitude 00:08:08.13\00:08:11.60 as the last one, do you feel confident in this wall? 00:08:11.60\00:08:15.80 This will still be standing when the earthquake is over. 00:08:15.80\00:08:19.56 Yeah, it was engineered, right? 00:08:19.56\00:08:21.43 It was engineered totally for that, 00:08:21.43\00:08:23.16 for that what happened and a little more. 00:08:23.16\00:08:26.00 Yes. 00:08:26.00\00:08:27.56 And in terms of its impact here for the university, 00:08:27.56\00:08:31.66 you've been here quite often and watched. 00:08:31.66\00:08:34.23 I know that they had a lot of people, up to 00:08:34.23\00:08:36.16 25,000 people on the campus. 00:08:36.16\00:08:38.53 They were able to get their campus back partially 00:08:38.53\00:08:41.23 as a result of the wall, I would say. 00:08:41.23\00:08:43.30 But what other impact do you see of the wall? 00:08:43.30\00:08:46.90 I see the impact in the administration, 00:08:46.90\00:08:49.10 of people just being able to relax in the security. 00:08:49.10\00:08:51.76 They know that they're not going to get anybody walking on campus 00:08:51.76\00:08:54.56 any time of the day, any night of the day. 00:08:54.56\00:08:56.93 They feel comfortable and safe inside it again now. 00:08:56.93\00:08:59.53 They have a wall that they know it's not going to come down if 00:08:59.53\00:09:02.53 they have another earthquake. 00:09:02.53\00:09:04.20 It's just created a sense of this is our place, 00:09:04.20\00:09:06.73 this is our area, and we have it back now. 00:09:06.73\00:09:09.20 And your students feel comfortable and safe, too, 00:09:09.20\00:09:12.06 I assume. 00:09:12.06\00:09:13.46 Sure. 00:09:13.46\00:09:14.80 There was a lot of question of when there was 00:09:14.80\00:09:16.80 the 25,000 people on campus living, and the children, 00:09:16.80\00:09:19.56 their children coming to school, especially kindergarten or 00:09:19.56\00:09:22.03 primary school, you get that many people living here 00:09:22.03\00:09:24.50 who a good share of them are not Adventists, 00:09:24.50\00:09:26.53 and people have access in and out. 00:09:26.53\00:09:28.16 The parents were really concerned about that. 00:09:28.16\00:09:29.73 So now the parents can send their students. 00:09:29.73\00:09:31.20 They come here to school in the morning, 00:09:31.20\00:09:32.63 pick them up in the afternoon. 00:09:32.63\00:09:34.26 They know they're in a safe environment the whole day, 00:09:34.26\00:09:36.06 which it should be. 00:09:36.06\00:09:37.46 You know, Maranatha usually uses a lot of volunteers in 00:09:37.46\00:09:39.73 projects like this. 00:09:39.73\00:09:41.20 Here in Haiti, we have determined that probably wasn't 00:09:41.20\00:09:43.50 the best idea. 00:09:43.50\00:09:44.96 So who built this wall? 00:09:44.96\00:09:46.43 The wall was built with workers that we've had that have 00:09:46.43\00:09:49.26 worked for us in other places. 00:09:49.26\00:09:50.80 We have 11 workers, some from Peru, Honduras, 00:09:50.80\00:09:53.86 the majority from the Dominican Republic. 00:09:53.86\00:09:55.86 All of them have worked for us before, 00:09:55.86\00:09:57.93 and the university provided 18 workers. 00:09:57.93\00:10:01.23 So we had a crew of 28 workers at times, maybe 20, 00:10:01.23\00:10:06.30 that worked on that wall. 00:10:06.30\00:10:08.20 So everything was done by those, by excavation through finish of 00:10:08.20\00:10:11.33 the wall. 00:10:11.33\00:10:13.06 A lot of the Haitian workers ended up being--taking 00:10:13.06\00:10:15.20 responsibilities and have learned quite a bit, 00:10:15.20\00:10:17.30 so it's a training for us, too, in weeding out some and it was a 00:10:17.30\00:10:20.36 pretty efficient crew. 00:10:20.36\00:10:22.56 You know, you've used 8-inch block here, good solid block, 00:10:22.56\00:10:26.40 and let me just divert for a second off the wall. 00:10:26.40\00:10:29.96 Most of this wall is built with 8-inch concrete block and where 00:10:29.96\00:10:35.83 did you get 'em? 00:10:35.83\00:10:37.76 The university had a block factory before the earthquake. 00:10:37.76\00:10:40.90 When we got involved and started doing it, 00:10:40.90\00:10:43.36 we checked some of their block. 00:10:43.36\00:10:44.96 We actually took some back to the United States to have them 00:10:44.96\00:10:46.73 crushed and have them tested. 00:10:46.73\00:10:48.53 We found that the range between the quality varied a lot. 00:10:48.53\00:10:51.90 So what we did, we decided we needed to step in. 00:10:51.90\00:10:54.10 Control the material, amount of cement used, the vibration, 00:10:54.10\00:10:59.40 the measurement, everything. 00:10:59.40\00:11:01.03 So all the block that were done on the wall was supervised by 00:11:01.03\00:11:03.70 a Maranatha supervisor who was there checking to make sure that 00:11:03.70\00:11:05.73 the right amount of sand, the right amount of cement, 00:11:05.73\00:11:07.50 made sure the heights were the same, 00:11:07.50\00:11:09.20 so their quality control block to get the quality of the block 00:11:09.20\00:11:12.53 we needed for the wall. 00:11:12.53\00:11:13.96 You've trained these guys in their own industry, basically. 00:11:13.96\00:11:17.83 So what's happened there? 00:11:17.83\00:11:19.56 Well, they continue making it. 00:11:19.56\00:11:21.00 And towards the last 4 or 5 months of the project 00:11:21.00\00:11:23.23 when you were doing the wall, they had such a demand, 00:11:23.23\00:11:26.43 at one time they couldn't keep up. 00:11:26.43\00:11:28.06 So I haven't checked with them lately, 00:11:28.06\00:11:29.93 but that would be interesting to see. 00:11:29.93\00:11:31.33 If they still can't keep up, that would be great. 00:11:31.33\00:11:33.56 So Maranatha typically builds a church, school, 00:11:33.56\00:11:39.00 multiples of those, sometimes housing, sometimes clinics. 00:11:39.00\00:11:44.13 Very rarely do we do a wall. 00:11:44.13\00:11:46.26 In fact, we've never done a wall this big. 00:11:46.26\00:11:49.13 We didn't even send volunteers to do it. 00:11:49.13\00:11:52.06 How does this fit in with the mission of Maranatha 00:11:52.06\00:11:56.63 and a mission project, period? 00:11:56.63\00:11:59.86 Well, I think it's a total missionary project, 00:11:59.86\00:12:02.33 because that's what we do. 00:12:02.33\00:12:03.80 We go out in the mission field and we do projects 00:12:03.80\00:12:05.60 so the church can grow. 00:12:05.60\00:12:07.23 The churches and schools we've built, 00:12:07.23\00:12:08.96 previous to the One-Day Church, have walls. 00:12:08.96\00:12:11.46 Why do they have walls on 'em? 00:12:11.46\00:12:12.90 To protect what's in. 00:12:12.90\00:12:14.40 To keep the weather out. 00:12:14.40\00:12:16.03 This is a big wall that's protecting a school which has 00:12:16.03\00:12:18.40 its mission to reach out and educate children, 00:12:18.40\00:12:23.00 but also teaching about God and about learning about him 00:12:23.00\00:12:26.66 so they can come to him, understand him more. 00:12:26.66\00:12:30.60 So I think it's a total mission project, 00:12:30.60\00:12:32.06 because we're providing an environment. 00:12:32.06\00:12:33.70 Just like the churches and buildings we do, 00:12:33.70\00:12:35.56 we provide an environment where the laypeople can continue on, 00:12:35.56\00:12:37.93 preach the pastor's Adventist campaign, schools teach, 00:12:37.93\00:12:40.56 so we're just fortifying a mission outreach, 00:12:40.56\00:12:44.16 which is this university, 00:12:44.16\00:12:45.60 so I think it's a great mission project. 00:12:45.60\00:12:47.60 Out in front, at the entrance out there, 00:12:47.60\00:12:49.76 when we started our first section of the wall, 00:12:49.76\00:12:51.23 there's a company in back that makes mattresses. 00:12:51.23\00:12:54.33 And the guy come over and we were talking about the wall, 00:12:54.33\00:12:57.23 and they had redone a part of his wall. 00:12:57.23\00:12:59.26 But they had done it exactly the same style of construction it 00:12:59.26\00:13:01.70 was before the earthquake. 00:13:01.70\00:13:03.63 So that--till another earthquake comes, 00:13:03.63\00:13:05.66 the same thing is probably going to happen, 00:13:05.66\00:13:08.93 where this wall was done totally different, 00:13:08.93\00:13:11.56 and that hopefully will reflect on the people and understand 00:13:11.56\00:13:14.36 that the education that's given here at the university is a cut 00:13:14.36\00:13:18.43 above, because God is present in that education. 00:13:18.43\00:13:21.90 Feel the excitement as a new One-Day School campus 00:13:21.90\00:13:24.96 is inaugurated when we come back. 00:13:24.96\00:13:29.10 The idea of a $10 church started in 1879. 00:13:31.06\00:13:35.16 Hi. 00:13:35.16\00:13:36.63 I'm Dick Duerksen with Maranatha Volunteers International. 00:13:36.63\00:13:38.93 The Battle Creek Tabernacle was built with dimes given by 00:13:38.93\00:13:41.40 thousands of people, including many children. 00:13:41.40\00:13:44.53 The 10 Cent Tabernacle idea was proposed by a son of 00:13:44.53\00:13:47.60 Seventh-day Adventist pioneers James and Ellen White, 00:13:47.60\00:13:50.46 and that gave Maranatha a similar idea. 00:13:50.46\00:13:53.43 Since 1988, we've built more than 250 churches worldwide 00:13:53.43\00:13:58.33 using donations of $10 a month from viewers like you. 00:13:58.33\00:14:03.03 This strategy provides new churches, 00:14:03.03\00:14:05.46 but it also helps build strong community 00:14:05.46\00:14:08.56 as we all work together. 00:14:08.56\00:14:10.73 Each month, your $10 donations help build nearly 00:14:10.73\00:14:13.66 three churches. 00:14:13.66\00:14:15.70 I want to encourage you. 00:14:15.70\00:14:17.33 Join us in the $10 church program. 00:14:17.33\00:14:19.40 It's easy. 00:14:19.40\00:14:20.86 Join us by visiting tendollarchurch.org. 00:14:20.86\00:14:24.43 Partner with people from all over the world. 00:14:24.43\00:14:26.90 It's only 10 bucks. 00:14:26.90\00:14:30.83 One of the most gratifying aspects of Maranatha's efforts 00:14:31.66\00:14:34.40 to help the Haitian people recover from the 2010 earthquake 00:14:34.40\00:14:37.93 has been providing classrooms for thousands of children. 00:14:37.93\00:14:41.76 Our efforts have been multiplied in a joint project between 00:14:41.76\00:14:45.30 Maranatha Volunteers International, ADRA, and ASI. 00:14:45.30\00:14:49.86 Working together, we will build 100 classrooms, 00:14:49.86\00:14:53.53 of which 27 will be located on the university campus. 00:14:53.53\00:14:56.96 By God's grace, 00:14:56.96\00:14:58.53 may this building be a wonderful blessing. 00:14:58.53\00:15:05.23 [applauding] 00:15:05.23\00:15:09.80 This school will be used for primary children to begin with, 00:15:09.80\00:15:13.86 and they really need it. 00:15:13.86\00:15:16.03 They'll use it in the morning for those young people, 00:15:16.03\00:15:19.86 and then they're going to use it in a double way, 00:15:19.86\00:15:22.60 because in the afternoon, they'll adapt the furniture just 00:15:22.60\00:15:25.86 a little bit and they will have adults in here 00:15:25.86\00:15:28.53 for adult education. 00:15:28.53\00:15:30.50 And I think it is absolutely marvelous what the university 00:15:30.50\00:15:33.26 here in Haiti, the Adventist University, 00:15:33.26\00:15:35.93 is planning to really help Seventh-day Adventists and 00:15:35.93\00:15:39.60 certainly the community as they use the results of a lot of 00:15:39.60\00:15:45.13 very faithful donors who have provided funding for this kind 00:15:45.13\00:15:48.86 of a school. 00:15:48.86\00:15:50.23 Imagine an adult that says all my life, 00:15:50.23\00:15:52.96 I've wanted to go to school, and I haven't been invited 00:15:52.96\00:15:56.00 on that university campus. 00:15:56.00\00:15:57.90 It's only for special people. 00:15:57.90\00:16:00.10 But yet, this school now is going to open its doors to 00:16:00.10\00:16:02.83 the community and allow moms and dads to come in and further 00:16:02.83\00:16:07.53 their education as an adult. 00:16:07.53\00:16:10.26 When that happens, everything changes for the family. 00:16:10.26\00:16:13.73 The economic indicators, the kids are more dedicated 00:16:13.73\00:16:17.13 to school. 00:16:17.13\00:16:18.63 They might have more resources after finding new jobs. 00:16:18.63\00:16:22.46 It's a real wonderful way of supporting the community. 00:16:22.46\00:16:27.13 And in fact, this little beginning will be 00:16:27.13\00:16:30.76 all over the country. 00:16:30.76\00:16:32.80 So again, we're very proud to have this partnership between 00:16:32.80\00:16:35.80 ADRA and Maranatha in favor of the community and the young 00:16:35.80\00:16:40.00 lives here that are yet to be transformed by this gift. 00:16:40.00\00:16:45.23 To give perspective on the project, 00:16:45.23\00:16:47.50 Don Noble spoke with Darrell Hardy at the site 00:16:47.50\00:16:50.06 just one day prior to Pastor Wilson's visit. 00:16:50.06\00:16:52.93 Well, Darrell, it's really good to be here in 00:16:52.93\00:16:55.10 Port-au-Prince at the Adventist University on the primary school 00:16:55.10\00:16:57.96 campus that is really looking good. 00:16:57.96\00:17:00.93 What do we have here? 00:17:00.93\00:17:02.63 We have a primary school complex. 00:17:02.63\00:17:04.46 We have 22 pads done. 00:17:04.46\00:17:06.23 In the end, we'll have 27 on this campus just for the primary 00:17:06.23\00:17:09.86 school here at the university. 00:17:09.86\00:17:11.66 So if I calculate that right, that means there's a lot of 00:17:11.66\00:17:14.46 students that are going to be going to school here. 00:17:14.46\00:17:16.30 There's currently this year about 850 and they expect 00:17:16.30\00:17:18.06 they can bump up over 1,000 with this new complex. 00:17:18.06\00:17:20.80 And right now they're meeting in One-Day Churches? 00:17:20.80\00:17:23.86 One-Day Church structures. 00:17:23.86\00:17:25.70 So now they can move into One-Day School structures. 00:17:25.70\00:17:27.63 Permanent. 00:17:27.63\00:17:28.96 Permanent. 00:17:28.96\00:17:30.30 Boy, that's really great. 00:17:30.30\00:17:31.63 You know, I noticed over here also that you have restroom 00:17:31.63\00:17:35.60 facilities that you're preparing for the students. 00:17:35.60\00:17:38.56 They're going to have a playground out here, 00:17:38.56\00:17:40.66 and it's going to be just an excellent place for them 00:17:40.66\00:17:42.93 to go to school. 00:17:42.93\00:17:44.63 Certainly a lot better than what they have right now. 00:17:44.63\00:17:46.66 Sure. 00:17:46.66\00:17:48.00 And that's what they really wanted is school classrooms 00:17:48.00\00:17:49.73 that don't have concrete roofs on them. 00:17:49.73\00:17:52.20 Yeah, my understanding was that the parents would not send 00:17:52.20\00:17:54.80 their kids, especially the young kids. 00:17:54.80\00:17:56.83 They didn't want them to go to a school that had a concrete roof. 00:17:56.83\00:17:59.30 That's right. 00:17:59.30\00:18:01.00 And the primary school is basically--most of it has been 00:18:01.00\00:18:03.46 condemned, so there's no way it should be used anyway, so. 00:18:03.46\00:18:05.96 And these schools are actually an upgraded version, 00:18:05.96\00:18:09.30 as I understand it, so that they can handle up to 00:18:09.30\00:18:12.43 a Category 4 hurricane. 00:18:12.43\00:18:14.23 Yeah. 00:18:14.23\00:18:15.56 They'll be upgraded and the structure will resist 00:18:15.56\00:18:17.63 140 mile-an-hour wind, which is just above Category 3, 00:18:17.63\00:18:20.73 which is what the educational department requires now 00:18:20.73\00:18:23.53 for Haiti. 00:18:23.53\00:18:25.13 Now, even in this primary school, 00:18:25.13\00:18:27.33 I think we're doing some computer rooms, too, aren't we? 00:18:27.33\00:18:29.96 Yeah. 00:18:29.96\00:18:31.40 Actually, there'll be two One-Day School buildings built 00:18:31.40\00:18:33.83 continuously for the computer room. 00:18:33.83\00:18:36.10 There'll be one for the offices 00:18:36.10\00:18:38.66 and there'll be two bathroom units. 00:18:38.66\00:18:40.73 The rest will be classrooms. 00:18:40.73\00:18:42.96 So why do we just have pads? 00:18:42.96\00:18:46.50 Well, we're waiting for the structures to come in, 00:18:46.50\00:18:50.00 the new structures, then we can start putting them up. 00:18:50.00\00:18:54.00 So we had to rekey, redesign, reengineer, 00:18:54.00\00:18:57.23 and tool up and they could be fabricated to be sent. 00:18:57.23\00:18:59.90 We have one container in the Dominican Republic 00:18:59.90\00:19:01.93 and one on the water. 00:19:01.93\00:19:03.46 So once they get through the exoneration process, 00:19:03.46\00:19:05.63 then we will have them to be able to start putting 00:19:05.63\00:19:07.40 these buildings up. 00:19:07.40\00:19:08.93 So you're ready right now to put these up quickly. 00:19:08.93\00:19:10.76 If we had the containers tomorrow, we could start. 00:19:10.76\00:19:12.96 Well, we have one school up. 00:19:12.96\00:19:15.50 This is just actually a sample so people can see what it is 00:19:15.50\00:19:18.83 that they're going to be getting. 00:19:18.83\00:19:20.33 Right. 00:19:20.33\00:19:21.66 This is not the upgraded steel system. 00:19:21.66\00:19:23.06 This is just a standard One-Day School structure. 00:19:23.06\00:19:26.96 The new structure from the outside will look 00:19:26.96\00:19:28.83 exactly the same. 00:19:28.83\00:19:30.46 All the upgraded trusses and their reinforcing and stuff 00:19:30.46\00:19:32.86 will be on the inside. 00:19:32.86\00:19:34.90 Now, this project remains a combined project with Maranatha, 00:19:34.90\00:19:39.03 ASI, and of course the major funding on this project right 00:19:39.03\00:19:43.93 chool project 00:19:43.93\00:19:48.00 here and the 100 00:19:43.93\00:19:48.00 here in Haiti is from ADRA, 00:19:43.93\00:19:48.00 through hurricane relief money. 00:19:48.00\00:19:49.93 So that's a real blessing and it's going to be wonderful for 00:19:49.93\00:19:52.63 the people here in Haiti and all that children that are going to 00:19:52.63\00:19:55.36 be going to these schools. 00:19:55.36\00:19:56.80 If you start looking at the number of 100 classrooms, 00:19:56.80\00:19:58.80 that's going to take care of a lot of students. 00:19:58.80\00:20:00.76 Yeah, for sure. 00:20:00.76\00:20:02.56 The university president said the other day--actually 00:20:02.56\00:20:04.73 yesterday we met with him for a little while. 00:20:04.73\00:20:06.73 He said that they're expecting that they want to expand 00:20:06.73\00:20:08.93 the university and use these in the afternoon for university 00:20:08.93\00:20:11.93 classes, because the school gets out at 12:15, 12:30, 00:20:11.93\00:20:15.03 so they can have a full shift university. 00:20:15.03\00:20:17.36 They can increase their capacity in the university. 00:20:17.36\00:20:19.63 They're just going to use--make mid-sized desks that work for 00:20:19.63\00:20:22.40 primary and university students. 00:20:22.40\00:20:24.20 So that's going to double the capacity and the use of 00:20:24.20\00:20:25.66 these buildings. 00:20:25.66\00:20:27.20 They are very resourceful. 00:20:27.20\00:20:28.90 That's excellent. 00:20:28.90\00:20:30.83 And this is a good location on the campus, too. 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.93 It's just inside the main gate so the parents can bring their 00:20:32.93\00:20:36.33 children in and they can come right on into the campus. 00:20:36.33\00:20:39.00 And the other thing, too, is it's spacious. 00:20:39.00\00:20:40.83 It's taken a lot more space than they normally would have done. 00:20:40.83\00:20:44.36 Let's walk around a little bit here. 00:20:44.36\00:20:45.73 They've got the playground and there's space between each 00:20:45.73\00:20:47.80 building for airflow, sunlight, so they're going to be in better 00:20:47.80\00:20:50.60 conditions than they would. 00:20:50.60\00:20:51.93 And the noise? 00:20:51.93\00:20:53.50 Well, that'll be there, too. 00:20:53.50\00:20:54.90 The classrooms get very noisy, 00:20:54.90\00:20:56.26 so separating them was helpful. 00:20:56.26\00:20:57.93 Yes, yes. 00:20:57.93\00:20:59.33 Now, will this be a playground? 00:20:59.33\00:21:01.03 Yes. This will be a total area. 00:21:01.03\00:21:02.83 The whole area around here will be a playground. 00:21:02.83\00:21:05.00 One of the remaining school classrooms goes there to fill in 00:21:05.00\00:21:07.80 that space there, which they're currently using to bring trucks 00:21:07.80\00:21:09.96 in, materials and stuff for the remaining classrooms. 00:21:09.96\00:21:12.40 So this is going to be a huge play area. 00:21:12.40\00:21:13.96 Well, the value here, too, is that the administrator can take 00:21:13.96\00:21:16.73 a look at virtually the whole campus from the headquarters 00:21:16.73\00:21:19.23 in the office. 00:21:19.23\00:21:20.73 Right. 00:21:20.73\00:21:22.06 The office will be right there at the end. 00:21:22.06\00:21:23.40 He can see this whole circle and he can also look out the window 00:21:23.40\00:21:25.13 and see at least one of the other seven pads. 00:21:25.13\00:21:27.43 Yeah, there's another seven pads down over the edge to 00:21:27.43\00:21:30.36 complete the entire campus. 00:21:30.36\00:21:32.70 Right. Exactly. 00:21:32.70\00:21:34.10 Well, that's great. 00:21:34.10\00:21:35.76 And how many guys have you had working on this 00:21:35.76\00:21:37.23 and who are they? 00:21:37.23\00:21:38.63 Well, we have a crew here. 00:21:38.63\00:21:39.96 There's a supervisor of the country. 00:21:39.96\00:21:41.30 That's Pastor Amador. 00:21:41.30\00:21:42.66 We have a total of 11 people from--some from Peru, Honduras, 00:21:42.66\00:21:47.23 the Dominican Republic right here, 00:21:47.23\00:21:49.90 and we've had a total of 18 workers that the university 00:21:49.90\00:21:53.66 is providing, local workers that have provided here. 00:21:53.66\00:21:57.33 So we've had--at times, we've had about 20 workers 00:21:57.33\00:22:01.30 on this one site. 00:22:01.30\00:22:03.40 As I think about the potential for what will happen 00:22:03.40\00:22:06.26 right here on this ground, with all those children, 00:22:06.26\00:22:11.30 it's pretty phenomenal. 00:22:11.30\00:22:15.26 Laura Noble was also at the primary school campus. 00:22:16.43\00:22:19.53 She's been in Haiti several times and as you can see, 00:22:19.53\00:22:22.80 she finds great joy being with the children. 00:22:22.80\00:22:29.13 We are right in the middle of this huge school project. 00:22:29.13\00:22:34.03 Came on campus today. 00:22:34.03\00:22:35.90 I was shocked to see how many pads there are. 00:22:35.90\00:22:40.83 That means on top of every pad is a school building, 00:22:40.83\00:22:44.23 is a school classroom, and inside every school classroom 00:22:44.23\00:22:47.96 there's going to be a boatload of kids. 00:22:47.96\00:22:52.40 Can't tell you how grateful that makes me feel, 00:22:52.40\00:22:54.76 because just a few months ago we were here, 00:22:54.76\00:22:56.90 and there are kids oozing out of everywhere. 00:22:56.90\00:23:00.70 And, you know, you start thinking back on your own 00:23:00.70\00:23:04.40 personal experience and thinking what did a Christian education 00:23:04.40\00:23:09.86 do for me? 00:23:09.86\00:23:12.53 I have to say I'm standing here today because of 00:23:12.53\00:23:17.56 a Christian education. 00:23:17.56\00:23:19.96 So it's very personal and I think that to educate these 00:23:19.96\00:23:25.26 kids, not just to learn math and science, which are so important; 00:23:25.26\00:23:29.86 not just to learn how to read and write and get ahead in life, 00:23:29.86\00:23:33.23 but to learn about Jesus Christ and for his love for them and 00:23:33.23\00:23:37.50 what he did for them and that there's something better than 00:23:37.50\00:23:41.80 just this planet. 00:23:41.80\00:23:43.76 So today we're looking around at school buildings and we're 00:23:43.76\00:23:49.80 really thinking about kids. 00:23:49.80\00:23:52.40 Last time I was here, there was all these little girls 00:23:52.40\00:23:54.80 and of course, who doesn't love a little girl. 00:23:54.80\00:23:58.13 So, you know, there's always a ringleader and of course, 00:23:58.13\00:24:02.76 this one ringleader happened to remind me of a girl 00:24:02.76\00:24:06.20 that I went to school with. 00:24:06.20\00:24:08.06 And she ran up to me and in what I thought was pretty good 00:24:08.06\00:24:14.10 English, she looks up at me and she says do you love Jesus? 00:24:14.10\00:24:20.33 And I was shocked. 00:24:20.33\00:24:22.63 She said it in English. 00:24:22.63\00:24:24.86 And I looked at her and I thought about my whole life, 00:24:24.86\00:24:29.43 you know, lot of ups and downs. 00:24:29.43\00:24:32.10 Maybe you've had some of that, too. 00:24:32.10\00:24:34.43 I thought about where I am right now, you know, 00:24:34.43\00:24:38.30 how the love of God has made such a difference for me. 00:24:38.30\00:24:41.00 How my education as a little girl made such a huge difference 00:24:41.00\00:24:46.76 for me. 00:24:46.76\00:24:48.80 And I'm so grateful that this school is full of kids that are 00:24:48.80\00:24:56.23 learning about Jesus Christ, and when they run up to an adult, 00:24:56.23\00:25:00.86 that's the question they ask. 00:25:00.86\00:25:03.30 I mean, that--that was amazing to me. 00:25:03.30\00:25:06.83 And it's so hopeful and I really believe that is the primary 00:25:06.83\00:25:12.46 reason why these schools are important and why these schools 00:25:12.46\00:25:17.70 are going to make a difference. 00:25:17.70\00:25:21.66 When you see children in school, happy children, 00:25:21.66\00:25:25.16 safe children, children learning, 00:25:25.16\00:25:29.93 children meeting Jesus, it gives one a new perspective. 00:25:29.93\00:25:38.43 One-Day Classrooms are changing the lives of children 00:25:38.43\00:25:41.33 all around the world. 00:25:41.33\00:25:43.96 Please partner with us in any one of our church 00:25:43.96\00:25:47.66 or school projects. 00:25:47.66\00:25:49.33 Learn how you can be involved at our website, 00:25:49.33\00:25:52.30 or by calling the number on your screen. 00:25:52.30\00:25:55.10 We welcome your participation. 00:25:55.10\00:25:57.83 For Dick Duerksen and the entire Maranatha family, 00:25:57.83\00:26:01.60 I'm Kyle Fiess. 00:26:01.60\00:26:03.43 Join us again next week for another episode of 00:26:03.43\00:26:06.30 Maranatha Mission Stories. 00:26:06.30\00:26:10.23 [music] 00:26:28.00\00:26:43.00
