It was surely an alive church, but we needed other dimensions 00:00:01.76\00:00:06.56 of ministry to challenge us, to flex our muscles, 00:00:06.56\00:00:09.83 to stretch us a little bit. 00:00:09.83\00:00:13.26 And so when--it was actually Steve Salsberry, 00:00:13.26\00:00:15.36 our assistant pastor who joined us about 4 years ago. 00:00:15.36\00:00:19.60 He started talking about we need to go on a Maranatha trip. 00:00:19.60\00:00:21.86 And he was right on. 00:00:21.86\00:00:23.46 The church's youth group had gone on mission trips, 00:00:23.46\00:00:26.10 but the pastoral staff decided to expand the impact 00:00:26.10\00:00:29.73 and plan a project to Honduras open to all their members. 00:00:29.73\00:00:34.00 The idea was let's involve as many church members 00:00:34.00\00:00:38.23 in a life-changing experience with Jesus that we can. 00:00:38.23\00:00:41.00 And so the idea was to open this up to all generations from 00:00:41.00\00:00:44.66 kids as young as 10, all the way until, you know, 00:00:44.66\00:00:47.90 people are a little more seasoned. 00:00:47.90\00:00:49.50 With the hopes that the more people we have coming 00:00:49.50\00:00:52.16 and experiencing Christ on this trip if we can bring 00:00:52.16\00:00:55.40 that energy back to Phoenix and end up impacting 00:00:55.40\00:00:58.13 our own community of Phoenix by impacting the community 00:00:58.13\00:01:01.43 for Christ here in Honduras. 00:01:01.43\00:01:03.30 The concept of a mission trip just helps to expand the 00:01:03.30\00:01:06.23 whole idea of what it means to belong to the Body of Christ. 00:01:06.23\00:01:10.10 Like many other groups they turned to Maranatha 00:01:10.10\00:01:12.96 to help facilitate their mission trip. 00:01:12.96\00:01:15.66 From making sure all the necessary materials 00:01:15.66\00:01:18.20 are on the construction site, to keeping everyone healthy 00:01:18.20\00:01:21.46 and fed with safe food and water, Maranatha gives groups 00:01:21.46\00:01:25.40 all the necessary tools to succeed. 00:01:25.40\00:01:28.63 But every project starts with the discovery of a need. 00:01:28.63\00:01:33.46 I know exactly what needs to happen here. 00:01:33.46\00:01:35.90 We need to bring in a road grader, clean the road 00:01:35.90\00:01:38.66 all the way down to the river, let's asphalt. 00:01:38.66\00:01:40.56 I think that's probably a good idea, because it rains here 00:01:40.56\00:01:42.50 terribly and we don't want it to be just a big mud bath. 00:01:42.50\00:01:45.23 And then down at the river there's a perfect place 00:01:45.23\00:01:47.00 to put a damn. 00:01:47.00\00:01:47.96 With just a little bit of work, we can have 00:01:47.96\00:01:49.60 hydroelectric power. 00:01:49.60\00:01:51.03 And up there on that hillside is a perfect place 00:01:51.03\00:01:53.86 for a brand-new school and a little bit 00:01:53.86\00:01:55.63 of an agricultural training center. 00:01:55.63\00:01:57.36 I think they ought to do that. 00:01:57.36\00:02:01.00 A lot of people come to a place like this and that is 00:02:01.00\00:02:03.30 their immediate response. 00:02:03.30\00:02:05.16 At Maranatha we've discovered something really important 00:02:05.16\00:02:08.13 about our good ideas, leave them home. 00:02:08.13\00:02:12.36 Instead come down and have a visit. 00:02:12.36\00:02:15.36 Sit with the local people. 00:02:15.36\00:02:16.76 Listen to their hearts. Listen to their dreams. 00:02:16.76\00:02:19.43 And create a dream. 00:02:19.43\00:02:22.10 Well, make their dream come to life. 00:02:22.10\00:02:26.06 The Camelback Church did just that. 00:02:26.06\00:02:28.56 After announcing the project to the church, a small group made 00:02:28.56\00:02:31.83 a trip to Olanchito, Honduras, to learn how they 00:02:31.83\00:02:34.86 could best serve the community. 00:02:34.86\00:02:37.36 When you do any kind of a project, or a ministry 00:02:37.36\00:02:39.90 for that matter at all, I think there's such a value 00:02:39.90\00:02:42.93 for being able to just listen to people. 00:02:42.93\00:02:45.96 And I think the danger in not listening is that we could end 00:02:45.96\00:02:50.66 up trying to meet a need that may not be 00:02:50.66\00:02:53.03 the greatest need for those people. 00:02:53.03\00:02:55.90 And so, by us coming down here to Olanchito, doing a pre-trip 00:02:55.90\00:02:59.03 in January, we committed to just listening, to being open 00:02:59.03\00:03:02.43 to what God really was wanting to do here in this community. 00:03:02.43\00:03:05.93 Their original plan had been to remodel an existing 00:03:05.93\00:03:09.10 Adventist elementary school, but they discovered the school 00:03:09.10\00:03:12.70 was already at capacity, leaving no room 00:03:12.70\00:03:15.73 for future growth. 00:03:15.73\00:03:17.56 The pastoral staff felt that God was telling them 00:03:17.56\00:03:20.50 to think bigger. 00:03:20.50\00:03:22.13 And decided to step out in faith and take on the much 00:03:22.13\00:03:25.26 larger project of building a brand-new 00:03:25.26\00:03:28.30 One Day School campus. 00:03:28.30\00:03:30.50 Their church stood behind them 100%. 00:03:30.50\00:03:33.93 And I got to tell you, the church there they accepted it 00:03:33.93\00:03:38.13 with open arms and they were just thrilled at this bigger 00:03:38.13\00:03:41.76 vision that God had given to us. 00:03:41.76\00:03:44.06 When we come back, join the Camelback Church as they launch 00:03:44.06\00:03:46.80 their mission adventure in Honduras. 00:03:46.80\00:03:50.46 [music] 00:03:50.90\00:03:55.90 [music] 00:04:00.06\00:04:05.06 After months of planning and fundraising, Camelback Church 00:05:00.90\00:05:04.53 members and their friends made the journey 00:05:04.53\00:05:06.73 to Olanchito, Honduras. 00:05:06.73\00:05:09.13 Pastor White feels this team of volunteers was 00:05:09.13\00:05:12.26 handpicked by God. 00:05:12.26\00:05:14.10 I've told the group from Camelback from the beginning, 00:05:14.10\00:05:17.23 I believe that every person that's on this trip is here 00:05:17.23\00:05:19.60 because God wanted them here. 00:05:19.60\00:05:21.46 This is his team. 00:05:21.46\00:05:23.03 And they're the people that are supposed to be here 00:05:23.03\00:05:25.26 at this place and at this time. 00:05:25.26\00:05:28.10 A year ago if you had told me that this is what I was 00:05:28.10\00:05:30.53 going to do, there's no way I would have said, 00:05:30.53\00:05:33.36 "You're out of your mind," but I felt that this is where 00:05:33.36\00:05:36.56 God wanted me to do-- where God wanted me to go. 00:05:36.56\00:05:39.40 And here I am. 00:05:39.40\00:05:40.93 For Ron Bortmas, his call to the mission trip was 00:05:40.93\00:05:43.83 a last-minute one. 00:05:43.83\00:05:46.10 He announced from the pulpit, 00:05:46.10\00:05:47.26 "Hey, I have one more ticket to Honduras, Olanchito." 00:05:47.26\00:05:51.66 I talked to my wife, "Should I go? 00:05:51.66\00:05:53.20 Shouldn't I go?" 00:05:53.20\00:05:54.36 I went up there 10 minutes later, 00:05:54.36\00:05:56.53 and I expressed my interest. 00:05:56.53\00:05:59.70 And Charlie said, "Good Ron, but there's six people 00:05:59.70\00:06:01.53 ahead of you." 00:06:01.53\00:06:03.93 Okay. 00:06:03.93\00:06:05.40 I'm at the bottom of the barrel. 00:06:05.40\00:06:06.86 I let go of it. 00:06:06.86\00:06:09.33 And then Tuesday afternoon, 2 days before departure, 00:06:09.33\00:06:12.43 I got a phone call at 2 p.m. 00:06:12.43\00:06:13.90 from Pastor Steve, "You want to go?" 00:06:13.90\00:06:17.00 And I said, "Well, what happened 00:06:17.00\00:06:18.06 to the other six people?" 00:06:18.06\00:06:19.33 "Never mind that Ron. Do you want to go? 00:06:19.33\00:06:21.60 Do you have a passport?" 00:06:21.60\00:06:22.56 I said, "Yeah, I got a passport." 00:06:22.56\00:06:24.16 And so I made it. 00:06:24.16\00:06:26.16 I made it here, you know? 00:06:26.16\00:06:28.16 God wants me to be here. 00:06:28.16\00:06:29.66 He got rid of the other six people. 00:06:29.66\00:06:32.66 So, I'm not going to fight divine providence, you know? 00:06:32.66\00:06:36.33 So, I'm here. 00:06:36.33\00:06:37.73 Their main project was to construct 00:06:37.73\00:06:39.40 a One Day School campus. 00:06:39.40\00:06:41.80 The campus consisted of several One Day School classrooms, 00:06:41.80\00:06:45.60 along with a bathroom block, administration building, 00:06:45.60\00:06:48.56 and library. 00:06:48.56\00:06:50.06 Church members worked together to learn new skills 00:06:50.06\00:06:52.93 and more about each other. 00:06:52.93\00:06:54.80 We are a very large church and so, you have your friends 00:06:54.80\00:06:57.93 and you may meet other people, but when you work with somebody 00:06:57.93\00:07:01.40 else side by side that's when you really get to know them. 00:07:01.40\00:07:05.03 And I just have to say I have not heard one complaint 00:07:05.03\00:07:08.20 out of this crew. 00:07:08.20\00:07:09.86 Everyone that I've been meeting, that I've seen before, 00:07:09.86\00:07:14.13 but maybe haven't known personally. 00:07:14.13\00:07:15.80 I'm just so shocked with the amount of work that people 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.43 are doing, capable of doing, and actually getting in there 00:07:18.43\00:07:21.53 and doing. 00:07:21.53\00:07:22.80 Set on a beautiful piece of land just outside of town, 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.93 the new campus provides the students with room 00:07:25.93\00:07:28.36 to learn, play, and grow. 00:07:28.36\00:07:31.10 All things they were lacking at the old site. 00:07:31.10\00:07:34.10 The classrooms that we have here are very very small. 00:07:39.46\00:07:43.06 The kids stumble on each other. 00:07:43.06\00:07:45.10 They fight with each other, because there's not enough 00:07:45.10\00:07:47.63 space for them to relax. 00:07:47.63\00:07:49.46 But over there it will be different, because they say, 00:07:49.46\00:07:52.93 "Wow, teacher. 00:07:52.93\00:07:54.23 "We just went to see the classrooms there, 00:07:54.23\00:07:56.16 "and they are very big. 00:07:56.16\00:07:57.86 So, we will not be fighting each other there." 00:07:57.86\00:08:01.20 This is convenient for us as teachers, because when we 00:08:01.20\00:08:04.43 administer the tests to the students, we have issues 00:08:04.43\00:08:07.93 because a lot of the children cheat and do not study. 00:08:07.93\00:08:11.23 Now, I told some of my students "You're not going to be 00:08:11.23\00:08:14.56 "cheating anymore, because now there will be good separation 00:08:14.56\00:08:18.40 between each student in the classrooms." 00:08:18.40\00:08:21.03 So, even if we have 50 students in each classroom, 00:08:21.03\00:08:23.83 they will always have space. 00:08:23.83\00:08:27.23 It used to be that when a church came on a mission trip 00:08:28.10\00:08:30.50 they came to build buildings. 00:08:30.50\00:08:32.56 And they would really focus on that. 00:08:32.56\00:08:33.96 The steel would be up. 00:08:33.96\00:08:35.16 They would come and make sure that the concrete blocks 00:08:35.16\00:08:36.93 were just right. 00:08:36.93\00:08:38.06 That there was a wall outside the school. 00:08:38.06\00:08:40.00 They were busy. 00:08:40.00\00:08:41.40 But the Camelback Church from Phoenix, Arizona, 00:08:41.40\00:08:43.56 is demonstrating that there is another option today. 00:08:43.56\00:08:46.83 The One Day School classrooms are designed 00:08:46.83\00:08:48.86 to be erected quickly. 00:08:48.86\00:08:50.86 That provides volunteers with time to connect 00:08:50.86\00:08:53.56 with the community in other ways. 00:08:53.56\00:08:55.86 Although constructing the One Day School campus was 00:08:55.86\00:08:58.53 Camelback's major focus, the group took a holistic approach 00:08:58.53\00:09:02.70 to serving the needs of the Olanchito community. 00:09:02.70\00:09:06.30 A small group of volunteers worked on giving the old school 00:09:06.30\00:09:09.33 a long overdue face-lift. 00:09:09.33\00:09:11.93 With a few repairs and a new coat of paint, 00:09:11.93\00:09:14.73 the old school is now ready to serve the community 00:09:14.73\00:09:17.60 as a center for adult literacy training. 00:09:17.60\00:09:21.00 A steady line of patients kept the medical team busy 00:09:21.00\00:09:24.23 as they cared for many physical ailments. 00:09:24.23\00:09:26.96 We feel it's really important to help the people to see that 00:09:26.96\00:09:31.33 we're concerned about them in a physical way as well 00:09:31.33\00:09:34.66 as spiritual and educational. 00:09:34.66\00:09:36.60 So, and I think that they really do appreciate the 00:09:36.60\00:09:38.86 attention that we give them. 00:09:38.86\00:09:40.83 It's the opportunity also to share the gospel with them. 00:09:40.83\00:09:44.86 So, not only the medical aspect of our mission, but we can 00:09:44.86\00:09:48.33 share our hope with them about the land where there'll be 00:09:48.33\00:09:53.00 no more sickness, no more sorrow, 00:09:53.00\00:09:54.66 no more trials, and it would be paradise. 00:09:54.66\00:09:58.33 The medical team also provided health education 00:09:58.33\00:10:00.66 to the patients. 00:10:00.66\00:10:02.50 Children and adults learned practical health tips 00:10:02.50\00:10:05.33 through humorous puppet shows. 00:10:05.33\00:10:07.53 And prayer was offered to all of the patients. 00:10:07.53\00:10:10.86 Every afternoon hundreds of children gathered in the church 00:10:10.86\00:10:14.00 to sing songs and hear stories about the life of Jesus. 00:10:14.00\00:10:18.10 Volunteers spent time preparing colorful crafts to help 00:10:18.10\00:10:21.70 illustrate Bible stories and God's love to the children. 00:10:21.70\00:10:25.63 A field next to the new school became the center of a soccer 00:10:25.63\00:10:29.00 ministry designed to engage kids in a favorite sport 00:10:29.00\00:10:33.00 and introduce them to their new school. 00:10:33.00\00:10:35.90 At night Arizona conference president, Tony Anobile, 00:10:35.90\00:10:39.96 preached about God's love to a packed church. 00:10:39.96\00:10:43.16 As a result more than 50 people 00:10:43.16\00:10:45.40 made decisions for Christ. 00:10:45.40\00:10:47.46 No corner of the community was left untouched 00:10:47.46\00:10:49.96 by the volunteers' efforts. 00:10:49.96\00:10:51.93 Olanchito will never be the same. 00:10:51.93\00:10:55.40 Compare how the Adventist Church 00:10:55.40\00:10:57.23 here in town, the Maranatha Church, 00:10:57.23\00:10:58.93 is known in this community last year 00:10:58.93\00:11:02.83 as how it will be known next year 00:11:02.83\00:11:05.43 with a new school and lots of activity. 00:11:05.43\00:11:08.86 I would say that there will be a change of 100% or more. 00:11:08.86\00:11:13.93 The entire community will be--will know 00:11:13.93\00:11:20.10 the Adventist church as the best. 00:11:20.10\00:11:23.40 I mean, I'm very happy because this activity have given us 00:11:23.40\00:11:29.80 the opportunity to get in touch almost with everyone 00:11:29.80\00:11:34.46 of this community. 00:11:34.46\00:11:35.90 They're really impacted with the Maranatha team that came 00:11:35.90\00:11:42.36 to visit us and is making a big impact 00:11:42.36\00:11:44.93 with the Bible education, with the campaign, 00:11:44.93\00:11:47.66 and also with the construction of new buildings of the-- 00:11:47.66\00:11:51.76 I mean, I nevered imagined that there's a family in the 00:11:51.76\00:11:55.40 entire community that will not know about the Adventist church 00:11:55.40\00:11:58.66 and his message. 00:11:58.66\00:11:59.90 So, I mean, I feel very very comfortable with this 00:11:59.90\00:12:04.63 movement that I'm seeing in the whole community, 00:12:04.63\00:12:06.73 the entire community. 00:12:06.73\00:12:08.33 When we come back, see the impact a mission trip 00:12:08.33\00:12:11.33 can make on a community and a church family. 00:12:11.33\00:12:15.16 The idea of a $10 church started in 1879. 00:12:16.73\00:12:21.03 Hi, I'm Dick Duerksen with 00:12:21.03\00:12:22.33 Maranatha Volunteers International. 00:12:22.33\00:12:24.46 The Battle Creek Tabernacle was built with dimes given 00:12:24.46\00:12:27.03 by thousands of people, including many children. 00:12:27.03\00:12:30.70 The 10-cent tabernacle idea was proposed by a son 00:12:30.70\00:12:33.23 of Seventh Adventist pioneers, James and Ellen White. 00:12:33.23\00:12:36.63 And that gave Maranatha a similar idea. 00:12:36.63\00:12:39.46 Since 1988, we've built more than 250 churches worldwide 00:12:39.46\00:12:44.56 using donations of $10 a month from viewers like you. 00:12:44.56\00:12:48.90 This strategy provides new churches, but it also helps 00:12:48.90\00:12:52.53 build strong community as we all work together. 00:12:52.53\00:12:56.16 Each month your $10 donations help build nearly 3 churches. 00:12:56.16\00:13:01.66 I want to encourage you, join us in the $10 Church Program. 00:13:01.66\00:13:05.13 It's easy. 00:13:05.13\00:13:06.36 Join us by visiting TENDOLLARCHURCH.ORG. 00:13:06.36\00:13:10.33 Partner with people from all over the world. 00:13:10.33\00:13:12.83 It's only 10 bucks. 00:13:12.83\00:13:15.66 How do you measure the success of a mission project? 00:13:16.93\00:13:20.10 Is it in the number of buildings constructed? 00:13:20.10\00:13:22.83 Or the number of medicines dispensed? 00:13:22.83\00:13:25.40 Or really is it about change? 00:13:25.40\00:13:28.20 God used the Camelback volunteers as his change agents 00:13:28.20\00:13:32.46 in the Olanchito community. 00:13:32.46\00:13:34.86 You know, when we came and we heard there were 00:13:34.86\00:13:36.76 over 80 people coming--you know, I've run mission trips before. 00:13:36.76\00:13:38.90 I've--that's going to be a nightmare. 00:13:38.90\00:13:41.20 And even Lisa and I, and I guess I throw her under the bus 00:13:41.20\00:13:43.63 along with me, we said, "There's no way they can 00:13:43.63\00:13:45.36 "accomplish everything they're set out to do. 00:13:45.36\00:13:47.93 "There's not enough time. 00:13:47.93\00:13:49.30 This is--there's too much." 00:13:49.30\00:13:51.30 I cannot tell you, whoever's listening or watching this, 00:13:51.30\00:13:54.16 how impressed I am with the group of people that came. 00:13:54.16\00:13:56.50 They accomplished everything they set out to do in harmony. 00:13:56.50\00:13:59.73 Every night Pastor White, Pastor Graham, Pastor Steve 00:13:59.73\00:14:02.33 would lead us in an incredible testimony time, 00:14:02.33\00:14:04.60 keep us together as a family. 00:14:04.60\00:14:06.50 To coordinate more than 80 people on a project 00:14:06.50\00:14:08.93 like this is probably unheard of. 00:14:08.93\00:14:11.43 And to have the success that they had is unbelievable. 00:14:11.43\00:14:14.23 After many long days of construction, the volunteers 00:14:14.23\00:14:17.13 and members of the community gather to officially dedicate 00:14:17.13\00:14:20.53 the new school campus. 00:14:20.53\00:14:22.53 The facilities will help the school to accomplish their goal 00:14:25.26\00:14:28.06 of providing a complete education for their students. 00:14:28.06\00:14:31.00 Well, the motto of our institution is 00:14:36.70\00:14:39.66 "To educate is to redeem." 00:14:39.66\00:14:42.20 We redeem for Jesus Christ. 00:14:42.20\00:14:44.53 The first thing we teach our children every day they come 00:14:44.53\00:14:48.13 to class is to seek God, to read his word, but God is first 00:14:48.13\00:14:53.46 and that the most important thing is the fear of the Lord. 00:14:53.46\00:14:57.50 We teach them that true education is not about learning 00:14:57.50\00:15:00.50 how to read and write, but that they should be grounded 00:15:00.50\00:15:04.13 in a perfect and correct foundation, 00:15:04.13\00:15:06.76 which is Christ Jesus. 00:15:06.76\00:15:09.16 There are a lot of people who are professionals 00:15:09.16\00:15:11.16 who are prepared intellectually. 00:15:11.16\00:15:13.20 They might have a master, a doctorate, or other things, 00:15:13.20\00:15:16.60 but that doesn't mean they're educated. 00:15:16.60\00:15:19.36 Being educated is to have values. 00:15:19.36\00:15:21.56 And we teach these values to our students. 00:15:21.56\00:15:24.80 Since values are being stepped on everywhere, we're getting 00:15:24.80\00:15:28.13 more students in our school because we teach good values. 00:15:28.13\00:15:33.46 This mission experience had a deep affect 00:15:33.46\00:15:36.10 on the volunteers as well. 00:15:36.10\00:15:38.93 What value is a mission trip to the Camelback Church 00:15:38.93\00:15:42.03 and to success of your ministry at home? 00:15:42.03\00:15:44.43 Well, see there are several. 00:15:44.43\00:15:46.23 Probably the first thing of value is the fact that our 00:15:46.23\00:15:49.60 members get to experience God firsthand, I believe, 00:15:49.60\00:15:52.60 because the fact that it builds a personal relationship 00:15:52.60\00:15:55.40 with Jesus. 00:15:55.40\00:15:56.70 Because they see the Holy Spirit work 00:15:56.70\00:15:59.16 like they've never seen before. 00:15:59.16\00:16:01.10 Let's face it, most Americans-- they don't understand other 00:16:01.10\00:16:04.66 countries and their cultures. 00:16:04.66\00:16:07.06 They come down here, they experience it firsthand. 00:16:07.06\00:16:09.90 And they get to see the way the Honduran people live, okay? 00:16:09.90\00:16:13.50 And then second of all, not only do they personally grow 00:16:13.50\00:16:17.43 with understanding more about God's love, but they get 00:16:17.43\00:16:19.80 to understand a little more about the culture, 00:16:19.80\00:16:21.70 the way the Honduran people live and appreciate that. 00:16:21.70\00:16:24.46 And then when they get home they're going to look at their 00:16:24.46\00:16:26.53 beautiful home, their cars, their job, and they're going 00:16:26.53\00:16:30.06 to go, "Wow, I guess I didn't have it so bad after all." 00:16:30.06\00:16:34.36 You know? 00:16:34.36\00:16:35.60 And third of all, it builds unity among the church members. 00:16:35.60\00:16:39.56 I mean, these church members are bonded. 00:16:39.56\00:16:42.10 I had one church member come to me and say, "You know, 00:16:42.10\00:16:44.30 "Pastor Steve, I didn't know that so-and-so was this way. 00:16:44.30\00:16:48.16 "And now I 'm getting to know them as a friend. 00:16:48.16\00:16:50.10 "This is wonderful. 00:16:50.10\00:16:51.33 "And when we get back to the States, we're going to be even 00:16:51.33\00:16:54.13 closer friends." 00:16:54.13\00:16:55.50 I mean, you talk about building and partnership and teamwork 00:16:55.50\00:16:59.13 and coming close together as a family. 00:16:59.13\00:17:01.80 I mean, these 85-87 people from Camelback are just bonding like 00:17:01.80\00:17:07.30 never before, you know. 00:17:07.30\00:17:09.46 Nothing, short of a mission trip, I don't think can bond 00:17:09.46\00:17:13.33 people from a church than a mission trip. 00:17:13.33\00:17:16.86 And how does that impact your ministry? 00:17:16.86\00:17:19.56 Your work? 00:17:19.56\00:17:20.66 Oh, absolutely. 00:17:20.66\00:17:21.86 It just--it makes it so much better because the fact that 00:17:21.86\00:17:23.30 when I get back on mission trips and go to the church, 00:17:23.30\00:17:26.30 and of course I run into these wonderful people here that have 00:17:26.30\00:17:28.76 been on the mission trip, you have that bonding. 00:17:28.76\00:17:32.00 You have that closeness. 00:17:32.00\00:17:33.23 And it's just absolutely wonderful. 00:17:33.23\00:17:34.86 And then when you ask, "Hey look we need this help-- 00:17:34.86\00:17:38.40 "we need a help with this certain ministry, 00:17:38.40\00:17:40.80 would you be willing?" 00:17:40.80\00:17:41.86 "Oh, yeah. Sure." 00:17:41.86\00:17:43.03 And so it's kind of like-- in a sense it's like an attitude 00:17:43.03\00:17:45.50 adjustment, too, with our members, you know? 00:17:45.50\00:17:48.06 So, it's a team building, you know? 00:17:48.06\00:17:49.83 They come closer to God. 00:17:49.83\00:17:51.26 They just understand the culture a little more. 00:17:51.26\00:17:53.36 And you know, they just--I just feel they get a little more 00:17:53.36\00:17:55.83 spring in their step towards God and their love for him. 00:17:55.83\00:17:59.13 It's just wonderful to see a change and only 11 days 00:17:59.13\00:18:03.56 a change in people's lives. 00:18:03.56\00:18:05.63 Unbelievable. Unbelievable. 00:18:05.63\00:18:08.76 Working side by side has helped church members 00:18:08.76\00:18:11.76 form deeper friendships. 00:18:11.76\00:18:14.83 The interesting part of this is that we've been going to 00:18:14.83\00:18:17.03 Camelback for about 5 years and we've seen a lot of these 00:18:17.03\00:18:20.73 people, and they look familiar. 00:18:20.73\00:18:22.30 We might know a few of their names, but really haven't 00:18:22.30\00:18:25.36 developed a whole lot of close, close friendships, 00:18:25.36\00:18:30.60 maybe just a handful of people. 00:18:30.60\00:18:33.23 I feel like, not only would I know these people by name 00:18:33.23\00:18:38.03 and shake their hand, I would want to go up and give them 00:18:38.03\00:18:40.80 a big hug and say, "I missed you," 00:18:40.80\00:18:42.60 if I hadn't been at church the week before. 00:18:42.60\00:18:46.00 This has really been special for me and the fact 00:18:46.00\00:18:49.66 that I think that I'm kind of standoffish in general 00:18:49.66\00:18:53.73 and this is really just put me-- you can't have your guard up. 00:18:53.73\00:18:57.60 And you can't have any walls in this kind of a situation. 00:18:57.60\00:19:00.63 You really have to trust people and depend on them. 00:19:00.63\00:19:02.63 And I have enjoyed that dynamic immensely. 00:19:02.63\00:19:06.30 Traditionally Seventh-Day Adventist Church members 00:19:06.30\00:19:09.73 sit on the same pew every week. 00:19:09.73\00:19:13.83 It's like this is their spot. 00:19:13.83\00:19:16.83 You better--don't think about it too much, it's my spot. 00:19:16.83\00:19:20.06 I'm there with my family every week that's why 00:19:20.06\00:19:21.80 I feel comfortable. 00:19:21.80\00:19:24.30 So, basically you meet the same folks every week. 00:19:24.30\00:19:28.70 So, right here being with a group of more than 00:19:28.70\00:19:32.33 80 members we have more chance to interact, 00:19:32.33\00:19:35.46 get to know their names, what they do, 00:19:35.46\00:19:37.70 what is their interest, and to see how nice people are. 00:19:37.70\00:19:43.56 It's for me a great opportunity and I enjoy it, 00:19:43.56\00:19:47.30 every single minute of it. 00:19:47.30\00:19:50.13 I get to know a lot of new folks even though we've been 00:19:50.13\00:19:52.90 going to that same church for more than 6 years. 00:19:52.90\00:19:55.20 It's been so much fun to watch God working in so many 00:19:55.20\00:19:58.13 different ways with all the different groups. 00:19:58.13\00:20:01.43 And our little get-togethers in the evening when everybody 00:20:01.43\00:20:03.73 kind of gives their report, it's just been fantastic. 00:20:03.73\00:20:06.86 It really has. 00:20:06.86\00:20:08.90 At home in Phoenix what I experience most 00:20:08.90\00:20:12.76 is superficial relationships. 00:20:12.76\00:20:16.26 Near a friendship, acquaintances, acquaintances. 00:20:16.26\00:20:24.03 And here they have a connection, 00:20:24.03\00:20:26.63 heart-to-heart, hand-to-hand. 00:20:26.63\00:20:31.20 I've--it's hard for me to talk right now. 00:20:31.20\00:20:37.06 It got to me. It got to me. 00:20:37.06\00:20:40.40 This is the Camelback Seventh-Day Adventist Church. 00:20:40.40\00:20:42.73 Empty right now, but in a few minutes the pews will fill. 00:20:42.73\00:20:46.46 And when church service comes the entire platform is going 00:20:46.46\00:20:49.86 to be covered with volunteers wearing shirts like this one. 00:20:49.86\00:20:53.53 Olanchito Family Impact, that's what really is happening. 00:20:53.53\00:20:58.76 The excited group of volunteers pile on 00:20:58.76\00:21:01.33 to the platform eager to share their experiences 00:21:01.33\00:21:04.40 with their church family. 00:21:04.40\00:21:06.26 They are now on fire for missions and want to share 00:21:06.26\00:21:09.06 that fire with others. 00:21:09.06\00:21:12.36 The effects of this trip will be long lasting 00:21:12.36\00:21:16.60 and continually life changing. 00:21:16.60\00:21:20.56 There will be at least four people from this group 00:21:20.56\00:21:24.20 that will ultimately be baptized as a result of what God did 00:21:24.20\00:21:28.43 in their lives and in their hearts on this trip. 00:21:28.43\00:21:33.23 I was shown ministry doesn't come in any one 00:21:33.23\00:21:35.33 particularly-shaped box. 00:21:35.33\00:21:38.26 And also, I guess this can include church family, 00:21:38.26\00:21:42.83 I'd like to share my wish for you today. 00:21:42.83\00:21:46.86 What I wish is that your days will be blessed with many 00:21:46.86\00:21:50.53 opportunities to serve and that your hearts and souls 00:21:50.53\00:21:54.03 will be blessed by each opportunity you accept. 00:21:54.03\00:21:57.76 I think we should begin the talk early on with the planning 00:21:57.76\00:22:00.93 of this trip as to what we hoped that God would do. 00:22:00.93\00:22:04.43 He just went so far above and beyond our expectations 00:22:04.43\00:22:07.96 that it's--he didn't just raise the bar. 00:22:07.96\00:22:10.13 He exploded the entire bar of what we thought was possible 00:22:10.13\00:22:14.83 with the way this trip could affect our church. 00:22:14.83\00:22:17.33 And we've seen so much unity begin to happen and I think 00:22:17.33\00:22:21.20 it's the whole idea that finally, over the last couple 00:22:21.20\00:22:24.93 of years we really hadn't had a project like this to focus our 00:22:24.93\00:22:28.66 whole church in one specific area, on one specific ministry. 00:22:28.66\00:22:32.36 But God used this Maranatha project to build the school, 00:22:32.36\00:22:35.70 to bring every age and generation together focused 00:22:35.70\00:22:38.96 on one single project. 00:22:38.96\00:22:41.03 And we hope that the church will develop a bigger passion 00:22:41.03\00:22:44.83 for ministry and for Christ. 00:22:44.83\00:22:46.86 And that is exactly what happened. 00:22:46.86\00:22:49.00 And more. 00:22:49.00\00:22:50.26 I think our church seems like they're more passionate about 00:22:50.26\00:22:52.86 missions, evangelism, community outreach, 00:22:52.86\00:22:55.63 about joining of mission projects in the future, 00:22:55.63\00:22:58.30 and also taking on a personal responsibility 00:22:58.30\00:23:01.26 that what happened in Honduras, with this 00:23:01.26\00:23:03.93 project as far as God using the participants, 00:23:03.93\00:23:07.63 that can be my experience if I would just open up myself 00:23:07.63\00:23:10.56 to be used by God right here in my own community, 00:23:10.56\00:23:13.40 whether that's my school, my work place, 00:23:13.40\00:23:17.30 where I work out at the gym, 00:23:17.30\00:23:18.96 or whether I'm at the grocery store. 00:23:18.96\00:23:21.00 And so, I've seen a lot more of a recommitment to being used 00:23:21.00\00:23:26.26 by Christ where you're at in the community. 00:23:26.26\00:23:29.93 One afternoon Jesus looked at his disciples and said, 00:23:29.93\00:23:32.96 "I've got a job for you. 00:23:32.96\00:23:34.53 "I want you to find a partner and go into each little 00:23:34.53\00:23:37.63 "communities all around this part of the world. 00:23:37.63\00:23:40.40 "And I want you to tell them about my father. 00:23:40.40\00:23:43.40 "More than that I want you to touch them. 00:23:43.40\00:23:44.96 "I want you to heal them. I want you to speak to them. 00:23:44.96\00:23:47.10 "I want you to tell them the stories of the past. 00:23:47.10\00:23:49.10 "And I want you to inspire them about the future. 00:23:49.10\00:23:51.53 I want you to make disciples." 00:23:51.53\00:23:55.33 The whole concept of discipleship is one of getting 00:23:55.33\00:23:59.40 together in a team of believers all following the teacher, 00:23:59.40\00:24:05.80 whose name of course is Jesus. 00:24:05.80\00:24:08.26 We're in Olanchito, Honduras, and I've been watching 00:24:08.26\00:24:11.16 disciples being made. 00:24:11.16\00:24:12.70 You see everything that's here is here because somebody 00:24:12.70\00:24:16.80 listened to the people who live here, caught their dream, 00:24:16.80\00:24:21.83 and then added that put my arm around you and together we turn 00:24:21.83\00:24:26.43 and look to Jesus Christ, and we'll all 00:24:26.43\00:24:30.26 become disciples together. 00:24:30.26\00:24:33.70 I've watched a lot of Maranatha projects, I've watched 00:24:33.70\00:24:36.20 a lot of buildings go up, but there's something 00:24:36.20\00:24:38.60 different about this one. 00:24:38.60\00:24:40.76 This whole process, the Camelback people coming 00:24:40.76\00:24:44.73 with their dream and accepting the Olanchito dream. 00:24:44.73\00:24:49.50 The Olanchito people having a dream that was this big 00:24:49.50\00:24:53.20 and the Camelback people helping it become this big. 00:24:53.20\00:24:55.86 As the president of the conference says, 00:24:55.86\00:24:57.86 "You gave us a double-size dream." 00:24:57.86\00:25:01.66 They have and that's stretching everybody. 00:25:01.66\00:25:05.23 But then isn't that what discipleship does? 00:25:05.23\00:25:08.70 Stretch everybody. 00:25:08.70\00:25:11.36 It's certainly what I've seen at Maranatha. 00:25:11.36\00:25:13.30 And I want to thank you for being part of making 00:25:13.30\00:25:16.90 the stretching possible. 00:25:16.90\00:25:20.26 Are you ready to be stretched by God? 00:25:20.26\00:25:22.96 Maranatha has many upcoming projects that need your help. 00:25:22.96\00:25:26.90 Visit our project calendar at MARANATHA.ORG and sign up 00:25:26.90\00:25:30.86 for a mission adventure. 00:25:30.86\00:25:32.60 Or call our toll-free number at 800-467-6386 for more 00:25:32.60\00:25:38.30 information on how your church or school group can experience 00:25:38.30\00:25:41.73 the power of service together. 00:25:41.73\00:25:43.96 Maranatha also needs your financial support to continue 00:25:43.96\00:25:47.30 to respond to an ever growing list of needs worldwide. 00:25:47.30\00:25:51.26 You can send your gift in the mail 00:25:51.26\00:25:53.30 to Maranatha Volunteers International, 00:25:53.30\00:25:55.96 990 Reserve Drive Suite 100, Roseville, California 95678. 00:25:55.96\00:26:02.56 Or visit MARANATHA.ORG to donate online. 00:26:02.56\00:26:06.10 Thank you for your support. 00:26:06.10\00:26:07.86 Our toll-free number is 800-467-6386. 00:26:07.86\00:26:12.96 Our web site is MARANATHA.ORG. 00:26:12.96\00:26:16.16 I'm Dick Duerksen, the host of "Maranatha Mission Stories." 00:26:16.16\00:26:18.90 Thanks for joining us this week in Olanchito, Honduras. 00:26:18.90\00:26:22.16 I don't know where we'll be next week, 00:26:22.16\00:26:23.76 but we'll be somewhere in the world working with you 00:26:23.76\00:26:26.50 on a mission for Jesus Christ. 00:26:26.50\00:26:28.63 "Maranatha Mission Stories," no it's not just as TV show. 00:26:28.63\00:26:32.06 It's a challenge for you that will change your life. 00:26:32.06\00:26:37.06 [music] 00:26:37.70\00:26:42.70
