Have you ever noticed the word, Cool, in the middle of school? 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.45 The folks in Vanuatu heard about the one day school, and they 00:00:04.49\00:00:08.74 said, Cool! Maranatha missions stories is next. 00:00:08.77\00:00:12.68 This year Maranatha began shipping its first one day 00:00:43.01\00:00:46.03 churches to the South Pacific. One of those containers ended up 00:00:46.06\00:00:49.60 in the nation of Vanuatu. Its amazing how practical a one day 00:00:49.63\00:00:54.53 church has shown its self to be around the world. 00:00:54.56\00:00:56.54 But in Island countries like Vanuatu with major population, 00:00:56.57\00:01:00.92 surviving basically on what they can grow to eat- 00:01:00.95\00:01:03.55 a one day church-extremely practical. 00:01:03.58\00:01:07.39 But when the leadership heard about a one day school, 00:01:07.42\00:01:11.23 Haha, they were elated! 00:01:11.26\00:01:14.68 Vanuatu is a group of islands in the South Pacific. 00:01:16.37\00:01:18.91 Its relatively near Fiji and the Solomons. But its biggest 00:01:18.94\00:01:23.26 neighbor is Australia. The Seventh Day Adventist Church 00:01:23.29\00:01:27.07 is thriving on these islands. The missionaries who sacrificed 00:01:27.10\00:01:30.39 their lives to bring the gospel to these truly distant lands, 00:01:30.40\00:01:33.80 succeeded in establishing a strong and growing church. 00:01:33.81\00:01:37.21 A great part of this strength comes from the leadership's 00:01:37.24\00:01:40.26 emphasis on education. 00:01:40.29\00:01:42.09 In Port Vila, on the campus of the Mission Offices, the Vila 00:01:42.12\00:01:46.75 Seventh Day Adventist Schools serves 125 students every day. 00:01:46.78\00:01:50.84 Its your typical urban school, except here each day begins 00:01:50.87\00:01:57.03 with singing and worship. 00:01:57.06\00:01:58.88 The classrooms are filled with young people eager to learn. 00:02:02.43\00:02:06.21 Today, these children are learning how to write a letter 00:02:06.24\00:02:09.10 to a friend in English. 00:02:09.13\00:02:11.46 For some of the children who learn differently, the teacher 00:02:15.31\00:02:18.68 is taking advantage of the fresh air to create a bible theater 00:02:18.71\00:02:22.77 where kids can practice their reading skills in a really fun 00:02:22.80\00:02:26.29 way. Most every Seventh Day Adventist church in Vanuatu, 00:02:26.32\00:02:29.82 from this large church in Port Vila, to the humble church 00:02:29.85\00:02:33.97 in Malacola, has a school. We have schools open now, 00:02:34.00\00:02:39.19 six schools, 6 starting day schools because of the 00:02:39.20\00:02:45.57 population that we have amongst our members. The membership 00:02:45.60\00:02:51.70 is growing and because of that we have children who do not 00:02:51.73\00:02:56.84 have schools to go to. They live in areas where there are 00:02:56.87\00:03:01.43 no schools nearby. The nearest school would be very far. 00:03:01.46\00:03:04.01 So our members take the initiative to start schools. 00:03:04.04\00:03:08.93 This is the Mau Mau School. Its first year of operation 00:03:08.96\00:03:12.98 in Vanuatu. I want you to meet Becky, one of the teachers. 00:03:13.01\00:03:16.26 Tell us about your school and your Kids. 00:03:16.29\00:03:18.64 Okay, our school is - we have 57 students altogether, 00:03:18.65\00:03:23.51 only about six of them is in Seventh Day Adventist 00:03:23.54\00:03:28.35 the rest is Sunday keepers. And our school we started month of 00:03:28.38\00:03:37.28 July, just the middle of this year. 00:03:37.31\00:03:40.55 Becky went on to explain that the school's rapid growth 00:03:40.58\00:03:43.79 has made it difficult for her as she is the only teacher for 57 00:03:43.82\00:03:47.80 children. But you heard her say the vast majority of her 00:03:47.83\00:03:51.56 students are not Seventh Day Adventists. The children also 00:03:51.59\00:03:54.74 join church activities. These children are Pathfinders, 00:03:54.77\00:03:58.21 practicing for a Pathfinder Day coming up in a couple of weeks. 00:03:58.22\00:04:01.61 And in the background, a one day church. 00:04:01.64\00:04:05.07 We see it very important to have school and church going together 00:04:06.00\00:04:13.15 everything together because the school purchases church leaders 00:04:13.18\00:04:17.86 and also school purchases church leaders and also school is 00:04:17.89\00:04:24.93 an evangelistic center. It brings people to church. 00:04:24.96\00:04:28.10 Parents coming to church through their kids. 00:04:28.13\00:04:32.33 That's why it is very important that school and church 00:04:32.36\00:04:36.97 go together. And my request to you is, If you'll have those 00:04:37.00\00:04:43.93 schools and we apply for them, would you be able to send us 00:04:43.96\00:04:47.70 some? Or send us a number of those one day schools? 00:04:47.73\00:04:54.33 In a country spread over 83 islands there were only 15 00:04:55.12\00:04:58.25 ordained pastors. Vanuatu needs the kind of church workers 00:04:58.26\00:05:02.05 that Adventist Education produces. When we come back, 00:05:02.06\00:05:06.00 I'll take you to the Kataparan school on the island of Tanna. 00:05:06.03\00:05:09.95 right on the beach. 00:05:09.98\00:05:11.80 Open up workout is the unique experience where you can come 00:05:15.09\00:05:18.85 and literally you're working yourself to death. 00:05:18.88\00:05:21.65 Its intense. Its very intense. Its definitely not a vacation. 00:05:35.91\00:05:39.90 And the hard work, the work here is extremely hard. 00:05:39.93\00:05:43.28 But at the end when you're finished you its worth it. 00:05:43.31\00:05:46.71 God shows himself in the little things. 00:05:46.74\00:05:48.50 You get transformed, you don't notice it until its too late. 00:05:48.53\00:05:54.54 It helps you to just be a better person. It changes you. 00:05:54.57\00:06:00.15 It's just amazing to see the things God can do in your life 00:06:00.18\00:06:03.70 and in others. 00:06:03.73\00:06:04.70 You have to come. It is the best experience you will ever have. 00:06:04.71\00:06:08.35 There's nothing like it. 00:06:08.38\00:06:09.48 The Katsuparan school on the island of Tanna is unique in 00:06:15.58\00:06:18.83 that its a boarding academy. But on the islands that's the only 00:06:18.86\00:06:22.95 kind of school that makes any sense. 00:06:22.98\00:06:24.29 Transportation options are limited primarily to walking, 00:06:26.33\00:06:29.64 hitching rides on trucks or motorcycles. 00:06:29.67\00:06:32.29 Katsuparan is located on the western shores of Tanna. 00:06:34.60\00:06:38.19 Its a beautiful campus. A place where learning is taken very 00:06:40.20\00:06:43.56 seriously. Not only are there busy classrooms, the library is 00:06:43.57\00:06:47.98 quite impressive for this remote location. 00:06:48.01\00:06:49.81 In addition to being Principal of the school, - 00:06:49.84\00:06:55.29 teaches science. I was able to pull him away from his schedule 00:06:55.30\00:06:58.81 to learn about Kataparan and how Maranatha's one day church 00:06:58.84\00:07:02.56 became part of his campus. 00:07:02.59\00:07:06.32 You're chapel fell down. It just collapsed. It was made 00:07:06.35\00:07:11.17 out of native material, and it just gave up. 00:07:11.20\00:07:14.21 And you were hoping that you could get a new church building. 00:07:14.24\00:07:16.84 Tell me about this one. 00:07:16.87\00:07:18.53 Okay, I was hoping and praying and pastor told me and also the 00:07:18.56\00:07:28.53 Mission director that Maranatha was going to sponsor some 00:07:28.56\00:07:31.50 churches so I asked him to put down Kataparan as one of the 00:07:31.53\00:07:37.42 schools that would receive one of those churches. 00:07:37.45\00:07:41.00 And Thank God, not one came, but two. 00:07:41.03\00:07:43.88 And so you have a double length one day church. 00:07:43.91\00:07:47.93 How will you use it? 00:07:47.96\00:07:49.52 We use the chapel mainly for worshiping on Sabbath. 00:07:49.55\00:07:53.86 And also for every evening we have worship with the students. 00:07:53.89\00:08:00.62 And sometimes in the morning we also have a worship 00:08:00.65\00:08:05.04 in the morning. And we usually use the chapel to 00:08:05.07\00:08:09.30 have all our worship and also any big gathering in the school 00:08:09.33\00:08:14.28 we would be using this chapel. So there's a lot of uses and 00:08:14.31\00:08:18.48 now there would be a lot of uses for the chapel that we have here 00:08:18.51\00:08:22.95 So you figure by December you'll be doing that. 00:08:22.98\00:08:25.26 But tell me what's happening with the block. 00:08:25.29\00:08:26.96 Come over and show me. 00:08:26.99\00:08:27.96 You can see the blocks here. The students that we have a part of 00:08:27.97\00:08:34.44 the work learning in the school. 00:08:34.47\00:08:36.17 The students make their own blocks. 00:08:36.20\00:08:38.16 So these are made by the students of the school. Yes. 00:08:38.17\00:08:41.92 My lands, and how - so they're doing really well. 00:08:41.95\00:08:44.65 Yea, of course they are doing well. There's a teacher that 00:08:44.68\00:08:48.12 usually helps to supervise. 00:08:48.15\00:08:50.06 How many blocks does it take to finish the church? Do you know? 00:08:50.09\00:08:53.56 about 400 to 600 blocks unless - we are going to put up half way. 00:08:53.59\00:09:01.14 Okay, it goes half way and then- 00:09:01.17\00:09:02.67 half way so the windows and all that. 00:09:02.70\00:09:04.76 And for that you will use the woven bamboo? 00:09:04.79\00:09:07.68 Yea, probably. We're not sure yet what to put the rest of that 00:09:07.71\00:09:11.46 but we want a lot of circulation from the air so we don't want to 00:09:11.49\00:09:15.21 - we want a lot of circulation from the air so we don't want to 00:09:15.24\00:09:17.78 That wouldn't work. So this will really be the students church. 00:09:17.81\00:09:22.64 Yes. Not only the students but also the community. We have 00:09:22.67\00:09:26.92 a large community here that comes to school to worship 00:09:26.95\00:09:31.30 too, on Sabbath and so they will also be part of this and in fact 00:09:31.33\00:09:35.44 they are helping out in building the church, too. 00:09:35.47\00:09:38.46 So they're taking care of helping to build the blocks, 00:09:38.49\00:09:40.96 to put them up and to cover some of the cost. 00:09:40.99\00:09:43.73 Yes, that's right. 00:09:43.77\00:09:44.78 Now, its not cheap to put up a block church and to build walls 00:09:44.82\00:09:50.48 That is correct. Ah, we had I think by God's grace we have 00:09:50.52\00:09:56.15 some people that are helping donate the cement that we 00:09:56.18\00:10:01.07 are using. And one friend from Australia that is helping to buy 00:10:01.11\00:10:07.03 some cement, too. And the school, we the students, 00:10:07.06\00:10:11.10 they also donate some money to build the church. 00:10:11.13\00:10:14.02 Now I want you to come over here with me because 00:10:14.05\00:10:16.91 there's two other stories that I think the need to be told. 00:10:16.94\00:10:19.61 First of all, What is that big mountain right behind you? 00:10:19.64\00:10:23.02 Oh, actually, up on the hill there, that's where the 00:10:23.05\00:10:27.35 The student's cabin is. the students do their farming. 00:10:27.38\00:10:30.45 Now, wait, the students who live down here, 00:10:30.48\00:10:32.89 go to the very top of the mountain to do farming? 00:10:32.92\00:10:34.64 That's part of school? 00:10:34.67\00:10:35.64 Well, not actually that, but it is part of the program that 00:10:35.65\00:10:40.29 we offer in the school. 00:10:40.32\00:10:41.29 The students go to class and as part of the program we 00:10:41.30\00:10:46.85 have a work line and it happens on Monday, Tuesday and, Thursday 00:10:46.88\00:10:51.74 and Sunday. And that's when the students work in the farm 00:10:51.77\00:10:55.65 while the others, not all of them, we divide them, 00:10:55.68\00:10:59.15 some work in the school. 00:10:59.18\00:11:00.63 So, if I go to the top of the mountain and I go to the garden, 00:11:00.66\00:11:04.95 what kind of plants am I going to find? 00:11:04.98\00:11:06.46 Cassava, Taro, Sweet Potato. We also planted some rice this year 00:11:06.49\00:11:15.64 Rice? Yea, So you have a swamp up there, too? 00:11:15.67\00:11:18.79 I think we-just a dry land. We planted some rice to try it 00:11:18.82\00:11:26.30 and we collected about 17 bags. When we husk it we took it to 00:11:26.33\00:11:31.55 the machine, we got 7 bags. 00:11:31.58\00:11:33.53 That's exciting. 00:11:33.56\00:11:34.79 It is and 00:11:34.82\00:11:35.79 Now you use all of the food that comes from up there 00:11:35.80\00:11:38.12 as part of feeding the children. Right? 00:11:38.15\00:11:40.11 That's correct. 00:11:40.14\00:11:41.11 I want you to take me to the kitchen. I think its important 00:11:41.12\00:11:42.92 for - to see your kitchen. 00:11:42.95\00:11:44.29 You're kitchen is something the students would be comfortable 00:11:44.32\00:11:47.37 with at home. Yes. 00:11:47.40\00:11:49.31 It's just like what their home kitchen- 00:11:49.34\00:11:51.77 Yes, that's correct. 00:11:51.80\00:11:52.99 We don't have any burner, no gas, we just use fire 00:11:53.02\00:12:00.04 see the firewood at the back? 00:12:00.07\00:12:02.12 Firewood is at the back. This is kitchen. 00:12:02.15\00:12:04.01 This is the kitchen so as you can see we use firewood to 00:12:04.04\00:12:07.38 There's lots of firewood here. 00:12:07.42\00:12:08.86 Okay and this is your stove? 00:12:08.89\00:12:11.19 Yes, this is where we light the fire and 00:12:11.22\00:12:13.51 If I gave you a giant electric stove would you be able to 00:12:13.54\00:12:19.19 use it? Ah, No, the reason is because 00:12:19.62\00:12:22.39 we don't have any 24 hours of light power here. 00:12:22.42\00:12:26.19 We do have a generator, but its just enough to provide for light 00:12:26.23\00:12:31.25 and also for the copying and for a few laptops and that's it. 00:12:31.28\00:12:37.24 How many children do you feed every day? 00:12:37.27\00:12:39.63 About 125 students. 00:12:39.66\00:12:45.13 So 125 students plus some plus some faculty, plus others 00:12:45.16\00:12:48.20 who always come along to eat. 00:12:48.23\00:12:49.59 No, not the faculty members. They have their own kitchen. 00:12:49.62\00:12:52.65 But this is a- What's over here? 00:12:52.68\00:12:57.10 we have the Taro. This is Taro here This one is, okay- 00:12:57.13\00:13:02.14 So this is part of this, the taro that they would bake? Yes. 00:13:02.17\00:13:07.73 Here, there, and this is kitchen. So this is where 00:13:07.76\00:13:14.15 I'm going to come and eat if I'm a student? 00:13:14.18\00:13:16.40 That's correct. But the students do not use the space to eat, 00:13:16.43\00:13:20.86 because we don't have enough stools. 00:13:20.89\00:13:23.12 So where do they eat? 00:13:23.15\00:13:25.02 They just stand outside and they take the food and sit anywhere. 00:13:25.03\00:13:28.21 So this is where the students would eat? 00:13:28.24\00:13:31.66 I love your outside. Tell me about your tree. 00:13:31.69\00:13:35.05 Okay, this is a Banyan tree. This is almost the biggest tree 00:13:35.08\00:13:41.05 on Vanuatu, especially on Tanna. 00:13:41.08\00:13:42.96 But its just beautiful. 00:13:42.99\00:13:44.17 Oh, really, I think it is beautiful. 00:13:44.20\00:13:48.08 Now do you have a name for it? Do you call this Fred, 00:13:48.11\00:13:53.06 Your local Banyan tree? Or is it just a tree? 00:13:53.07\00:13:55.93 We just call it Banyan tree. 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.41 It's just a tree. But it's a home. 00:13:57.42\00:14:00.66 It is very special to us because when we see big Banyan tree, we 00:14:00.70\00:14:04.41 know that's there's life under that tree. 00:14:04.42\00:14:07.31 There's life under the tree. Now I noticed that when I 00:14:07.34\00:14:09.41 went around to the villages, there were several places 00:14:09.44\00:14:11.78 where there would be women selling things. There was a man 00:14:11.81\00:14:15.52 fixing his car, underneath a Banyan tree. 00:14:15.55\00:14:18.31 But you're just going to be different. I noticed that a lot 00:14:18.32\00:14:22.31 of spiritual things happen to help the children here. 00:14:22.34\00:14:25.24 We have there, that's the bow house. That's where students 00:14:25.27\00:14:30.62 and teachers, they go to pray when they needed a quiet time. 00:14:30.65\00:14:34.84 And we have the tithe house here. 00:14:34.87\00:14:38.09 Oh my, so you're going to give me two wonderful stories. 00:14:38.12\00:14:42.37 So, come, I want to go to the power house. 00:14:42.40\00:14:44.63 Alright. When you told me this was a power house, I expected 00:14:44.64\00:14:48.12 to find your generator. But, no. 00:14:48.15\00:14:51.72 It's where the students come and get their spiritual life 00:14:51.75\00:14:56.93 revitalized, you know, like- 00:14:56.96\00:14:58.55 So what happens inside this room? 00:14:58.58\00:15:00.86 Inside this room is where students come and pray 00:15:00.89\00:15:04.16 when they want to talk to God about something, maybe 00:15:04.19\00:15:09.15 for something like now, we-next week we will be having exams 00:15:09.18\00:15:14.04 and students normally would come here and pray 00:15:14.07\00:15:17.04 and they would pick a promise from this box and it gives them 00:15:17.07\00:15:22.35 the assurance that God has answered their prayer. 00:15:22.38\00:15:25.26 May I? Yes, sure. 00:15:25.29\00:15:27.07 So if you open this and - choose a promise for me. 00:15:27.10\00:15:30.57 Okay, just one promise for you. 00:15:30.60\00:15:32.34 Are these going to be in English? 00:15:32.37\00:15:34.31 Yes it is in English. Okay, go ahead. 00:15:34.34\00:15:36.67 So, if I'm a student, one of the things you are teaching me, 00:15:36.70\00:15:41.58 is that I can come to the power house under the banyan 00:15:41.61\00:15:45.41 tree, I can come and I can get power from God and his Spirit. 00:15:45.44\00:15:49.26 That's right. What does my promise say? 00:15:49.29\00:15:51.35 The promise is in Proverbs 16, verse 3. It says, Commit thy 00:15:51.38\00:15:54.98 works unto the Lord and thy thoughts shall be established. 00:15:55.01\00:15:58.41 And thy thought shall be established? 00:15:58.44\00:16:01.01 So, as a student here, even what I think is part of what 00:16:01.02\00:16:05.25 you're teaching me to think wisely with God? 00:16:05.28\00:16:07.71 That's correct. Does it work well? 00:16:07.74\00:16:10.11 Do the students respond? 00:16:10.14\00:16:11.23 Yes, the students they come here and their attitudes change, 00:16:11.26\00:16:16.44 not immediately but over time because every day we have 00:16:16.47\00:16:21.62 worship and we have mixed - we have a lot of 00:16:21.66\00:16:25.92 non- Adventists here, too. 00:16:25.95\00:16:28.05 And there are about, if I am correct, 00:16:28.09\00:16:32.76 there are more than 10 non-Adventists and I think that 00:16:32.79\00:16:37.29 the students and the teachers have influenced their life 00:16:37.32\00:16:41.41 and they have made a lot of changes in their life. 00:16:41.44\00:16:44.99 and they have experienced God, too. I see them coming here. 00:16:45.02\00:16:48.60 non-Adventist who come here and pray to get power from God. 00:16:48.63\00:16:54.48 So Principal, I want you to take me around the corner 00:16:54.51\00:16:57.86 to the other house beneath the banyan tree. 00:16:57.89\00:17:00.94 You told me there were two. One is the power house, 00:17:00.97\00:17:03.88 What is the other one? 00:17:03.91\00:17:04.88 The tithe house. 00:17:04.89\00:17:06.09 The tithe house? Yea. 00:17:06.12\00:17:07.09 So I was in a tithe house a couple of days ago, 00:17:07.10\00:17:09.78 in the back country of, Efate'? Uhuh. 00:17:09.79\00:17:13.16 How is - what happens here? 00:17:13.19\00:17:15.17 Here, I think the school is the main one, that - 00:17:15.20\00:17:18.30 whenever we harvest in the farm we will take the food to the 00:17:18.33\00:17:24.20 dining hall to the kitchen. With no money put down here 00:17:24.23\00:17:27.23 to the tithe house and previously we used to a- 00:17:27.26\00:17:34.81 the Pastor -used to use that. So you have collected 7 days 00:17:34.84\00:17:39.72 of rice now. You take 10% of that and you put it inside here? 00:17:39.75\00:17:43.59 Yes the agriculture teacher is responsible for that, he is also 00:17:43.62\00:17:47.01 responsible for the farm. But everyone knows that this the 00:17:47.04\00:17:50.80 tithe house. They should be putting the 10% in there. 00:17:50.84\00:17:53.94 And God takes care of what goes in there, and it goes to 00:17:53.97\00:17:56.73 support his work. Yea, Okay. 00:17:56.76\00:17:58.29 The stage was first built so that you could have a program 00:17:58.32\00:18:02.00 and tell the entire community the good things about the school 00:18:02.03\00:18:05.52 But its not used for that anymore. What's happening now? 00:18:05.55\00:18:07.86 Now we use it for making the blocks. As you can see we have 00:18:07.89\00:18:11.95 the blocks here. 00:18:11.98\00:18:12.95 So tell, what's you're telling me is that the stage has found a 00:18:12.96\00:18:16.32 whole new way of communicating God to the community. 00:18:16.35\00:18:18.43 It's making blocks to improve the church. 00:18:18.46\00:18:21.25 That's correct. Not only to improve the church but also 00:18:21.28\00:18:24.31 we have at the building site was the building to - like 00:18:24.34\00:18:28.83 the two offices that you've seen there, we also use these blocks. 00:18:28.86\00:18:33.00 How important is your school to the growth of the Adventist 00:18:33.03\00:18:40.37 church in Tanna? 00:18:40.40\00:18:42.14 The school is unique. This is the only school in Tanna that is 00:18:42.17\00:18:47.77 run by Adventists or any religious groups in Tanna. 00:18:47.80\00:18:55.37 And I think that the school is doing a lot in bringing up the 00:18:55.40\00:19:02.60 moral standard of the students because in government schools 00:19:02.63\00:19:05.27 even though they teach religious education or instruction 00:19:05.30\00:19:09.40 they do not have worships like we do here. 00:19:09.43\00:19:13.01 And so we go a step further than just teaching them 00:19:13.04\00:19:17.15 Their religious education in the classroom because every other 00:19:17.18\00:19:20.38 subject, every other teachers. They would pray and normally 00:19:20.41\00:19:24.56 in classes and they would integrate faith into the 00:19:24.59\00:19:29.69 learning of the students in their one subject. 00:19:29.72\00:19:31.82 How is the Spirit active at your school? 00:19:31.85\00:19:34.80 I would say that when I came here I could sense that there is 00:19:34.83\00:19:43.49 this atmosphere is really different. Its different than 00:19:43.50\00:19:46.67 the government school where I was teaching before. 00:19:46.70\00:19:48.79 There is something special in here. 00:19:48.82\00:19:51.11 There's something really special here. That's an understatement. 00:19:51.14\00:19:56.07 Please pray for the faculty and students at Kataparan boarding 00:19:56.10\00:19:59.52 academy. What happens there forever affects the church in 00:19:59.55\00:20:03.74 Vanuatu. We'll be right back. 00:20:03.77\00:20:05.86 Children, we've learned are part of the magic of growing a church 00:21:08.07\00:21:11.74 Before we leave Vanuatu let me tell you one more story. 00:21:11.77\00:21:15.42 This is the story of Doralyn Leloyure 00:21:15.45\00:21:19.18 and her radio ministry. 00:21:19.21\00:21:21.97 In 2002 Doralyn began reading children stories every Sunday 00:21:25.18\00:21:29.19 morning at Port Vila's main radio station. 00:21:29.22\00:21:31.36 Her program became so popular with the children that they 00:21:31.39\00:21:34.16 didn't want to go to Sunday School. To help the parents, 00:21:34.19\00:21:36.86 she moved the program to the afternoon. 00:21:36.89\00:21:39.39 The station gave it a time slot free for five years. 00:21:39.40\00:21:42.85 But in 2007 they decided that Doralyn must pay for the time. 00:21:42.88\00:21:46.98 Not able to find a sponsor, she ended the broadcast. 00:21:47.01\00:21:50.68 But as she tells the story, the program, famous for it's 00:21:50.71\00:21:55.17 bible stories and quizzes would soon be back on the air. 00:21:55.20\00:21:58.74 One day when I was driving in town doing some custom clearance 00:21:58.77\00:22:04.09 for some container, a taxi came by and the radio announced that 00:22:04.12\00:22:10.95 the - asked me to stop, so I stopped and he 00:22:10.98\00:22:15.73 and he came to the side and told me to go come back and 00:22:15.77\00:22:19.18 tell stories on Sunday. And I told him I haven't found a 00:22:19.21\00:22:22.67 sponsor yet. And he said, just come back and tell stories 00:22:22.70\00:22:26.98 so I did. I said, I'll come so I went on Sunday and 00:22:27.01\00:22:31.43 did the program. After the program I asked him, How much 00:22:31.46\00:22:35.62 do I owe you? And he said, come back next Sunday. 00:22:35.65\00:22:38.77 So I did and came back next Sunday and did another hour 00:22:38.80\00:22:43.33 of stories and questions and then I asked him again, 00:22:43.36\00:22:48.83 You haven't told me how much do I owe you now. 00:22:48.86\00:22:52.92 And he said, For you, your program is free. 00:22:52.95\00:22:58.20 Keep coming so I knew that was an answer to prayer and God had 00:22:58.23\00:23:04.23 helped me to go back. And from then up to now we are still 00:23:04.26\00:23:09.49 telling stories and we haven't paid a single money 00:23:09.52\00:23:13.62 towards this program. 00:23:13.65\00:23:15.22 Doralyn by the way is the first woman to receive a gospel 00:23:15.23\00:23:19.57 commissioning in Vanuatu. Congratulations Doralyn. 00:23:19.58\00:23:23.23 The Seventh Day Adventist church in Vanuatu operates only 5 00:23:23.26\00:23:27.71 schools. But local churches operate about 45 more. 00:23:27.74\00:23:32.40 Now the government of Vanuatu has been watching Adventist 00:23:32.41\00:23:34.91 education on the islands. Recently they came to the 00:23:34.94\00:23:37.41 mission with a proposal, We really like your schools 00:23:37.44\00:23:41.30 and your teachers, they said. If you'll take responsibility 00:23:41.33\00:23:44.80 for operating your schools out of the mission office, 00:23:44.83\00:23:47.79 we will sign an agreement that will allow you to operate those 00:23:47.80\00:23:51.05 schools as fully Seventh Day Adventist and we'll pay your 00:23:51.08\00:23:54.37 teachers. But you need to improve your school buildings. 00:23:54.38\00:23:57.71 A perfect opportunity for the one day school. 00:23:57.74\00:24:01.79 Come back with me to the New Testament stories of Jesus and 00:24:01.80\00:24:06.22 his disciples. After the resurrection, Jesus met 00:24:06.25\00:24:09.73 his disciples on the shore of Galilee. Do you remember one 00:24:09.76\00:24:13.03 morning he walked the beach with Peter? Feed my sheep, 00:24:13.06\00:24:16.97 he told Peter. And then he reinforced the instruction, 00:24:17.00\00:24:20.33 twice more. Feed my lambs. Feed my sheep. 00:24:20.36\00:24:24.08 It's tough to feed sheep. They go where they want, they eat as 00:24:24.11\00:24:28.67 they please. About all you could do is point to the good grass 00:24:28.70\00:24:31.86 and keep them safe. Yet one of the Master Shepherd's last 00:24:31.89\00:24:36.63 commands was simply, Feed my sheep. Theologians have 00:24:36.66\00:24:42.00 offered many explanations of why Jesus gave Peter that same 00:24:42.03\00:24:45.30 command three times. For me, it was simply to remind all of us 00:24:45.33\00:24:51.21 one very simple truth. Children depend on us for support, 00:24:51.24\00:24:56.75 insight and encouragement. They need us to be their teachers. 00:24:56.78\00:25:01.57 I spend a lot of my time around schools in my life. 00:25:01.60\00:25:05.33 And I've noticed something really special about students 00:25:05.36\00:25:08.89 and teachers, about sheep and shepherds. Students learn best 00:25:08.92\00:25:14.57 when they know they are loved. We saw that love at the 00:25:14.60\00:25:18.68 Kataparan school in Vanuatu. We saw it in the Mau Mau school. 00:25:18.71\00:25:23.09 As students responded with admiration and love 00:25:23.12\00:25:26.98 to teacher Becky whose love for each of the kids was so obvious. 00:25:27.01\00:25:31.50 Seventh Day Adventist education is known for it's academic 00:25:31.53\00:25:35.48 excellence. For it's high graduation statistics and it's 00:25:35.51\00:25:39.39 successful alumni. When you get down to the very bottom line of 00:25:39.42\00:25:43.86 why the schools are so respected you discover it's all about the 00:25:43.89\00:25:48.30 Spirit of God in the teachers. Look closely and you'll end up 00:25:48.33\00:25:54.28 standing next to the minister of education in Vanuatu, 00:25:54.31\00:25:57.37 We really like your schools and your teachers. In fact we like 00:25:57.40\00:26:01.39 to sign an agreement that will allow you to operate the schools 00:26:01.42\00:26:05.38 as fully Adventist and we will pay your teachers. 00:26:05.41\00:26:08.98 That's when the mission turns to Maranatha and asks for help 00:26:09.01\00:26:13.60 in constructing new school buildings. And that's when 00:26:13.63\00:26:17.41 Maranatha turns to you. It'll cost a bit more than $7,500 00:26:17.44\00:26:22.98 for each of the schools and we need 40 to 50 of them. 00:26:23.01\00:26:26.53 But as Jesus commanded, Feed my lambs. 00:26:26.56\00:26:31.96 The growth of the church in Vanuatu is directly related 00:26:31.99\00:26:36.63 to the presence of those schools next to the churches. 00:26:36.66\00:26:39.64 As you heard pastor John Leamon say, Put us on the list for one 00:26:39.67\00:26:45.51 day schools. We can really use them. And you can really help 00:26:45.54\00:26:50.99 make it possible. 00:26:51.02\00:26:52.38 I'm your host, Dick Deurksen. Thank you for joining me today 00:27:36.28\00:27:40.70 on Vanuatu. I look forward to seeing you again soon on 00:27:40.74\00:27:44.60 Maranatha Mission Stories. 00:27:44.64\00:27:46.82
