00:05 Need a reading teacher for you child?
00:07 Look no further than your music instructor. 00:10 Children cannot read fluently without three key pillars. 00:14 Oral discrimination, sequential learning, 00:17 and midline development. 00:19 Whether the children are singing, playing, or listening, 00:22 classroom teachers are directing them to listen 00:25 and hear, which is oral discrimination. 00:28 They're doing this in new ways: 00:30 By exposing children to many types of sounds, 00:34 children's voices develop. Even perhaps from the dull 00:37 expressionless monotone to a wide range of pitches, volumes, 00:41 and subtleties'. As music instruction adds instruments 00:45 and movement, we are addressing sequential learning. 00:48 This is of course important for math, but equally important 00:53 to developing literate children. 00:55 How many courses can really teach sequential learning 00:58 with as much involvement and with such ease as can 01:01 the music specialist with a simple singing game, 01:04 play party or a folk dance. 01:06 Finally, no child can read fluently without crossing 01:10 the midline of the body fluently. 01:12 Our eyes must travel easily from left to right and back 01:16 in order to read. 01:17 Many children who are struggling with reading do not have 01:21 adequately developed midline crossing skills. 01:23 It is very difficult to train the eyes to do this, 01:26 however, if taught through large motor skills, 01:29 midline crossing skills almost magically transfer to fluid 01:33 eye movement from reading. 01:34 So as children learn crossover ?...on barred instruments, 01:38 or as they wave streamers in a figure 8 pattern for a 01:42 Chinese Ribbon Dance, play shadows and mirrors, 01:45 dance a grapevine, play a rhythmic rock passing game 01:49 or such. Music classes helping with fluid midline issues 01:53 and with the right, left-brain integration. 01:56 Who else but a music educator is able to achieve these goals 02:00 and still, have fun with our children? 02:02 Who else can do all this and have children love to come 02:05 to class? Who else can do all this and have the children 02:08 think they are getting out of the drudgery of school 02:10 and just coming to have some fun? 02:13 We don't have to tell the students our little secret 02:16 but as parents and educators, we should never forget the many 02:19 values of quality classroom music programs. 02:22 I'm Jennifer LaMountain reminding you, 02:24 God has created each one of us with a musical mind. |
