00:03 What should you expect from private music lessons?
00:06 This question is asked from me every so often. 00:08 So for the parents out there wondering whether they have 00:11 found the right teacher for their child, 00:13 here are some tips. 00:14 The basics should include a professional teacher 00:17 who starts on time. 00:18 Your child is treated respectfully and 00:21 the focus is on the child and their progress 00:23 while being encouraging, enthusiastic and avoiding 00:26 distractions. In addition, the teacher will have outlined 00:30 a plan for your child. 00:31 Sometimes this plan is not laid out for you 00:34 but it should be fairly self-evident. 00:36 Is the instructor using a series of books, a specific method 00:40 or systematic development of skill? 00:42 If they are not using a proven curriculum method, 00:45 it should be a solidly devised one by the teacher. 00:49 If for some reason you feel the instructor may be 00:52 arbitrarily choosing pieces of music or blindly progressing 00:55 through a series book with little thought or care. 00:58 You can ask where the instruction is headed 01:01 and what short and long term goals exist. 01:03 A good teacher will be able to tell you this without question. 01:08 One thing you should make sure and do is respect the 01:10 music teacher and their lessons. 01:12 Know what is expected of your child each week. 01:14 Write down music assignments and help your child meet 01:17 those goals. 01:18 Suzuki once said, you only need to practice on the days you eat. 01:22 I'm Jennifer LaMountain reminding you, 01:25 God has created each one of us with a musical mind. |
