Welcome to the program. 00:01:00.76\00:01:03.89 It's good. I'm glad to be here. 00:01:03.93\00:01:05.29 You know that's the first time, I have said Elder Larry Key 00:01:05.33\00:01:08.26 'cause I always say Larry. 00:01:08.30\00:01:09.76 You know, but you are, Elder 00:01:09.80\00:01:11.27 and you must give honor where honor is due. 00:01:11.30\00:01:13.13 Well, thank you. And I'm so proud of you. 00:01:13.17\00:01:14.50 I'm so glad you are saying that. 00:01:14.54\00:01:16.37 You know, Arthur just became Elder. 00:01:16.40\00:01:17.91 Did you know that? Yeah, I heard. 00:01:17.94\00:01:19.37 Congratulations. 00:01:19.41\00:01:20.74 Oh, that great vine is something else. 00:01:20.78\00:01:22.24 Didn't that? God is good. 00:01:22.28\00:01:23.81 You know, what you all should have, 00:01:23.85\00:01:25.18 one those Elder-- Do they have that, 00:01:25.21\00:01:27.22 Elder's circle, 00:01:27.25\00:01:28.58 where you all come together once a month? 00:01:28.62\00:01:29.95 Yeah, they do. Oh, yes. 00:01:29.98\00:01:31.32 We have the Motor City Elders Council. 00:01:31.35\00:01:32.69 Oh, really? Yeah. 00:01:32.72\00:01:34.06 And matter of fact, 00:01:34.09\00:01:35.42 I'm the chaplain for that organization. 00:01:35.46\00:01:36.79 Wow! Why am I not surprised? 00:01:36.83\00:01:38.59 Well, Larry, you know, this is your time 00:01:38.63\00:01:40.96 to tell your testimony, your story. 00:01:41.00\00:01:43.33 And we want you to tell our viewers 00:01:43.37\00:01:45.23 about Elder Larry Keys. 00:01:45.27\00:01:46.94 Tell us your story. 00:01:46.97\00:01:48.47 Well, God has blessed me tremendously over the years 00:01:48.50\00:01:52.37 and I call myself the Detroit miracle. 00:01:52.41\00:01:57.55 And the reason why, God had has his hands on me 00:01:57.58\00:02:00.92 from the beginning. 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.65 And my mother when she was pregnant with me, 00:02:02.68\00:02:07.59 she could not afford to take care of me. 00:02:07.62\00:02:10.46 And so she did the best the she thought at the time 00:02:10.49\00:02:14.00 and she put me up for adoption. 00:02:14.03\00:02:16.80 My birth name is Larry Coleman. That's my birth name. 00:02:16.83\00:02:23.17 And my mom, she wanted to try to give me to my grandmother. 00:02:23.20\00:02:29.94 But at the time my grandmother was raising my sister 00:02:29.98\00:02:33.78 and she was a single parent at the time 00:02:33.82\00:02:36.45 and she was not married. 00:02:36.48\00:02:37.82 So the courts would not allow her to get me as well 00:02:37.85\00:02:41.12 because they didn't think that she could take care 00:02:41.16\00:02:43.99 of both of us at a time. 00:02:44.03\00:02:45.69 So I was put in the foster home at the age of two months old. 00:02:45.73\00:02:51.17 And I was raised by a beautiful, 00:02:51.20\00:02:52.77 warm Christian family, the Key family. 00:02:52.80\00:02:55.30 And that's how I became Larry Key. 00:02:55.34\00:02:58.21 And I was raised in a Christian home, 00:02:58.24\00:03:01.18 raised in the Baptist church as a child. 00:03:01.21\00:03:04.45 All of my family was Baptists, we went to church every Sunday 00:03:04.48\00:03:08.28 and we stayed in church all day. 00:03:08.32\00:03:09.75 All day. 00:03:09.78\00:03:11.12 And but those were my early years, 00:03:11.15\00:03:14.39 like, exposed to Christian beliefs 00:03:14.42\00:03:17.46 in the Bible and everything. 00:03:17.49\00:03:19.49 But my foster father died when I was 13 00:03:19.53\00:03:24.43 and it was very, very traumatic for me. 00:03:24.47\00:03:27.14 That was a time in my life 00:03:27.17\00:03:29.70 where I really needed a man the most. 00:03:29.74\00:03:32.37 And I was angry and I was angry with God 00:03:32.41\00:03:35.94 when my father died at thirteen, 00:03:35.98\00:03:37.98 when I was thirteen. 00:03:38.01\00:03:39.45 And I began to rebel and I began to get into things 00:03:39.48\00:03:43.15 in school and gangs and things like that. 00:03:43.18\00:03:47.12 And so it was a very difficult time 00:03:47.16\00:03:49.42 between the ages of thirteen and seventeen. 00:03:49.46\00:03:52.59 And so God saw that the track that I was going and I had-- 00:03:52.63\00:03:57.00 was going down the wrong streets 00:03:57.03\00:03:58.87 and getting into some things 00:03:58.90\00:04:01.50 that I shouldn't have been getting in at that, 00:04:01.54\00:04:04.61 those teenage ages. 00:04:04.64\00:04:06.98 But I was just angry and I, 00:04:07.01\00:04:08.41 you know, I really enjoyed my father so much. 00:04:08.44\00:04:11.68 My father used to take me to baseball games, the state fair. 00:04:11.71\00:04:16.28 We did things together and I was just-- 00:04:16.32\00:04:19.55 I couldn't understand at that time, 00:04:19.59\00:04:21.76 "Why did the Lord allow my father to die at that time?" 00:04:21.79\00:04:27.00 And it was very difficult for me. 00:04:27.03\00:04:30.10 And so as I said, I began to do poorly in school. 00:04:30.13\00:04:37.11 Before that I mean, in elementary school, 00:04:37.14\00:04:39.04 I made all A's and B's. 00:04:39.07\00:04:40.41 But during that time period, I just rebelled 00:04:40.44\00:04:43.91 and just was doing all kinds of things, hanging with gangs. 00:04:43.95\00:04:48.48 And I praise, I thank the Lord 00:04:48.52\00:04:50.19 that I never got caught doing the wrong things. 00:04:50.22\00:04:54.02 I didn't get caught. The Lord had mercy on me. 00:04:54.06\00:04:57.13 There were times where I was on a porch one time 00:04:57.16\00:05:02.56 and they began to shoot. 00:05:02.60\00:05:05.93 And the bullet came right past my head 00:05:05.97\00:05:08.64 and missed me just by a few inches. 00:05:08.67\00:05:11.54 And, you know, then something went off in my head, you know, 00:05:11.57\00:05:15.14 I said, "You know, I don't know." 00:05:15.18\00:05:18.21 And at that time I was working at a fast food restaurant. 00:05:18.25\00:05:24.65 I went to school in the day and I worked at night 00:05:24.69\00:05:27.62 at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. 00:05:27.66\00:05:31.13 And at that time I met this young lady. 00:05:31.16\00:05:34.86 And you know, this young lady 00:05:34.90\00:05:37.57 began to talk about the Bible all the time. 00:05:37.60\00:05:40.74 And you know, I began to listen 00:05:40.77\00:05:42.44 but the girl was very, very attractive. 00:05:42.47\00:05:44.97 I mean, you know, I was trying to get next to her. 00:05:45.01\00:05:47.48 But you know, I could not get next to her 00:05:47.51\00:05:50.88 because she kept talking about God and her religion. 00:05:50.91\00:05:54.65 And so I began to listen. 00:05:54.68\00:05:56.12 And then she invited me over to her home for Bible studies. 00:05:56.15\00:06:01.26 And so I started actually reading the Bible 00:06:01.29\00:06:05.79 and listening to what she was saying. 00:06:05.83\00:06:08.56 And at that point, she invited me to come 00:06:08.60\00:06:12.33 to Burns Seventh-day Adventist Church in Detroit. 00:06:12.37\00:06:15.60 And prior to that I was giving her all kind of excuses. 00:06:15.64\00:06:20.98 I can't come, I don't have any socks or I forgot. 00:06:21.01\00:06:24.41 But I finally, and I was still had the wrong motives. 00:06:24.45\00:06:28.32 I'm just, the only way, I'm gonna get to this girl is, 00:06:28.35\00:06:31.12 I gotta go to her church. 00:06:31.15\00:06:32.75 Well, I'll make a long story short, 00:06:32.79\00:06:34.26 I came to Burns and I felt so welcomed. 00:06:34.29\00:06:38.69 Everybody was greeting me. 00:06:38.73\00:06:40.10 It was very-- everybody was sincere 00:06:40.13\00:06:43.30 and I felt a warmth of welcome. 00:06:43.33\00:06:46.70 And so I continued to come. I came the next Sabbath. 00:06:46.74\00:06:51.31 And the next Sabbath 00:06:51.34\00:06:52.67 and then I started taking Bible studies 00:06:52.71\00:06:54.91 from the Bible worker at the church. 00:06:54.94\00:06:58.41 And I really got engrossed into the Bible 00:06:58.45\00:07:02.05 and I started studying it. 00:07:02.08\00:07:03.52 And my mother was strictly Baptist. 00:07:03.55\00:07:08.89 All of my family was Baptist. 00:07:08.92\00:07:11.03 And she began to give me a hard time. 00:07:11.06\00:07:14.30 She says, "Why are you going 00:07:14.33\00:07:15.66 to that Seventh-day Adventist Church? 00:07:15.70\00:07:17.47 You know, you can't do anything in that church. 00:07:17.50\00:07:19.47 You can't do this, you can't do that." 00:07:19.50\00:07:21.14 I said, "Mom, but the Bible says and." 00:07:21.17\00:07:23.54 So I began to give Bible studies 00:07:23.57\00:07:27.18 to my family members and then my religion 00:07:27.21\00:07:31.01 became such a conflict in the home 00:07:31.05\00:07:34.88 that my mom asked me to leave the home. 00:07:34.92\00:07:37.15 What? 00:07:37.19\00:07:38.52 And so T. Marshall Kelly has baptized me. 00:07:38.55\00:07:42.56 And I called up Pastor Kelly and I said, "Pastor Kelly, 00:07:42.59\00:07:46.53 my mom has told me, I need to leave the house 00:07:46.56\00:07:50.10 and I can't stay here any longer." 00:07:50.13\00:07:52.23 And so he says, "Larry, don't worry about it." 00:07:52.27\00:07:55.37 He says, we're gonna pray 00:07:55.40\00:07:58.47 and God is going to work this out." 00:07:58.51\00:08:00.08 How old where you? 00:08:00.11\00:08:01.44 I was around, I was 17. 00:08:01.48\00:08:05.31 Well, 17 Around 17 at the time. 00:08:05.35\00:08:08.12 And so Pastor Kelly called one of the church members 00:08:08.15\00:08:11.92 and he called me back. 00:08:11.95\00:08:14.02 He says, "Look I'm going to send my son over 00:08:14.06\00:08:16.36 and one of his friends, to help pick up your things. 00:08:16.39\00:08:19.39 And we found a place where you could stay." 00:08:19.43\00:08:21.90 And one of the church members took me in. 00:08:21.93\00:08:24.37 And so they took me in and they were real nice. 00:08:24.40\00:08:29.70 They were Christian people. 00:08:29.74\00:08:31.07 And they treated me just like their son. 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.84 Is that right? 00:08:33.88\00:08:35.21 And so in the meantime I was trying to get money 00:08:35.24\00:08:38.65 to go down to Oakwood, in Huntsville, Alabama. 00:08:38.68\00:08:42.72 And some of the church members were encouraging me to go. 00:08:42.75\00:08:46.49 And so I began trying to work and save my money 00:08:46.52\00:08:50.73 to go to Oakwood. 00:08:50.76\00:08:52.09 Now God had already paved a way because my father 00:08:52.13\00:08:56.70 that had died, my foster father, 00:08:56.73\00:08:59.67 I was receiving Social Security cheques from my father. 00:08:59.70\00:09:03.47 And so they said, once I turned 18, 00:09:03.51\00:09:06.11 as long as I was in college, I could continue 00:09:06.14\00:09:09.11 to get the Social Security cheques. 00:09:09.14\00:09:12.81 And so that helped me to get in the Oakwood 00:09:12.85\00:09:16.92 along with Pell Grants and I worked jobs. 00:09:16.95\00:09:20.89 And then there were times where I would have to come home 00:09:20.92\00:09:24.06 because I didn't have enough money. 00:09:24.09\00:09:26.23 Back then Oakwood had three quarters. 00:09:26.26\00:09:29.00 They had the fall quarter. 00:09:29.03\00:09:30.67 They had the winter quarter and the spring quarter. 00:09:30.70\00:09:32.53 And I would never make it to the spring quarter 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.64 because my money would run out. 00:09:34.67\00:09:36.30 And so during those times I would go home 00:09:36.34\00:09:38.57 and I will go to Wayne County Community College 00:09:38.61\00:09:42.08 because I didn't want to get too far behind in my studies. 00:09:42.11\00:09:46.38 But you know what, 00:09:46.41\00:09:47.75 I would want to back up a little bit. 00:09:47.78\00:09:49.75 In high school, during those terrible times, 00:09:49.78\00:09:53.56 my grades were terrible. 00:09:53.59\00:09:55.12 I began to fall back 00:09:55.16\00:09:57.33 and I did terrible in high school. 00:09:57.36\00:10:01.16 And so I went to Pastor Kelly and I said, "Pastor Kelly, 00:10:01.20\00:10:04.13 my grades are terrible 00:10:04.17\00:10:05.63 and I really want to go to college. 00:10:05.67\00:10:07.94 And my one of the high school counselors told me 00:10:07.97\00:10:12.34 that my grades were so bad that I just need to go 00:10:12.37\00:10:15.88 and get a job in the factory like most men, 00:10:15.91\00:10:18.88 young men did back in the early 70s 00:10:18.91\00:10:21.55 living in Detroit. 00:10:21.58\00:10:23.22 You know, the Big Three everybody worked in the factory 00:10:23.25\00:10:25.42 because it was good money 00:10:25.45\00:10:26.79 and you didn't have to have a lot of education. 00:10:26.82\00:10:29.19 But I wanted, something was in the back of my head, 00:10:29.22\00:10:31.53 was saying that you need to go to college. 00:10:31.56\00:10:34.00 And my high school counselor told me, 00:10:34.03\00:10:36.13 "Since well, you're not college material, 00:10:36.16\00:10:38.23 you just need to go and get a job in a factory." 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.67 So I started talking to pastor Kelly 00:10:40.70\00:10:42.94 and pastor Kelly said, "Look, Larry, if you read your Bible, 00:10:42.97\00:10:46.41 your grades will increase." 00:10:46.44\00:10:47.78 He said, "Trust me." 00:10:47.81\00:10:49.14 He said, "Every subject is in the Bible 00:10:49.18\00:10:50.91 and all wisdom and knowledge comes from God. 00:10:50.95\00:10:53.38 If you read your Bible, your grades increase." 00:10:53.42\00:10:56.02 And so I began to read my Bible more and more. 00:10:56.05\00:10:59.69 And low and behold, my grades increase. 00:10:59.72\00:11:02.29 And so that first year, before I could get in Oakwood, 00:11:02.32\00:11:06.56 I didn't have the G.P.A. that I needed. 00:11:06.59\00:11:08.96 So I went to Wayne Community College. 00:11:09.00\00:11:10.97 And I think that's where we had spent some time 00:11:11.00\00:11:14.97 with the English class with Mr. Boom. 00:11:15.00\00:11:18.11 Mr. Daniel Boom, we had a class together. 00:11:18.14\00:11:20.21 And that was at Wayne county community college. 00:11:20.24\00:11:22.14 So that first year in my college experience, 00:11:22.18\00:11:26.61 the very first time I made As and Bs 00:11:26.65\00:11:30.09 in all of my major subjects. 00:11:30.12\00:11:31.85 And that gave me some strength and encouragement. 00:11:31.89\00:11:34.59 And so then I applied for Oakwood. 00:11:34.62\00:11:36.19 So I wanted to tell you that background. 00:11:36.22\00:11:38.26 Then I applied and I got in the Oakwood 00:11:38.29\00:11:40.33 because I was considered an advance freshman 00:11:40.36\00:11:43.13 or an advance student. 00:11:43.16\00:11:44.50 So I didn't have to take entrance exam. 00:11:44.53\00:11:47.64 I just came in like that. 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.30 And so from there, I got down at Oakwood. 00:11:49.34\00:11:53.54 And you know, I still had some 00:11:53.58\00:11:54.91 academic struggles and problems. 00:11:54.94\00:11:56.98 And there was a professor at Oakwood, told me that, 00:11:57.01\00:12:01.22 you know, that first year he said, 00:12:01.25\00:12:03.18 "You know, Larry, you just need to pack your old bags 00:12:03.22\00:12:05.85 and go back home to Detroit 00:12:05.89\00:12:07.22 because you're not college material. 00:12:07.26\00:12:09.42 But something inside me kept telling me, I could do this. 00:12:09.46\00:12:13.19 And one of my favorite Bible text is, "I can do all things 00:12:13.23\00:12:17.27 through Christ Jesus who strengthens me." 00:12:17.30\00:12:19.77 And Pastor Kelly used to tell me all the time, 00:12:19.80\00:12:21.87 You can you can do anything 00:12:21.90\00:12:23.37 that if the Lord is on your side 00:12:23.41\00:12:25.71 who can be against you? 00:12:25.74\00:12:27.08 And so I kept pressing on. 00:12:27.11\00:12:29.14 I would work and I started taking 00:12:29.18\00:12:32.81 remedial courses at Oakwood. 00:12:32.85\00:12:34.88 And just to make a long story short, 00:12:34.92\00:12:36.99 God blessed me tremendously. Today I have five degrees. 00:12:37.02\00:12:40.82 I've marched three times at Oakwood. 00:12:40.86\00:12:42.86 I couldn't get enough of Oakwood. 00:12:42.89\00:12:44.23 I loved it so much. 00:12:44.26\00:12:46.39 Now what are your degrees in it? 00:12:46.43\00:12:47.76 Well, I have a Social Science Degree in Communications. 00:12:47.80\00:12:51.83 Then I went on, went back and got a Bachelor's 00:12:51.87\00:12:54.34 in Communications and Bachelor's in Religion. 00:12:54.37\00:12:57.24 And then I got another Socialist Degree. 00:12:57.27\00:12:59.64 Because I took so many courses 00:12:59.67\00:13:01.04 at Wayne County Community College, 00:13:01.08\00:13:02.54 I ended up getting an associates of Science 00:13:02.58\00:13:04.45 and in Liberal Arts, a Degree in Liberal Arts. 00:13:04.48\00:13:08.18 And then I went on 00:13:08.22\00:13:09.55 and I got the B.A in Communications and Religion. 00:13:09.58\00:13:13.02 And then I was able to go to Andrews University 00:13:13.05\00:13:17.59 and receive the Masters in Teaching. 00:13:17.63\00:13:20.20 And also I was able to go to Fisk University. 00:13:20.23\00:13:24.80 I did some graduate work at Howard University 00:13:24.83\00:13:27.64 in the School of Divinity. 00:13:27.67\00:13:29.37 And now here is an experience 00:13:29.40\00:13:31.34 that really told me that never give up. 00:13:31.37\00:13:34.34 While I was-- I lived in Nashville, Tennessee. 00:13:34.38\00:13:37.45 I was teaching in one of our Adventist schools there. 00:13:37.48\00:13:40.42 And I heard about a program 00:13:40.45\00:13:42.98 where they were looking for African-Americans 00:13:43.02\00:13:45.95 to teach elementary school and public schools. 00:13:45.99\00:13:48.92 And so all you had to have is just a Bachelor's Degree. 00:13:48.96\00:13:52.63 But I had more at the time, I had a Master's. 00:13:52.66\00:13:55.13 But I wasn't State certified to teach elementary. 00:13:55.16\00:13:58.90 And this program was with Fisk in Tennessee State. 00:13:58.93\00:14:02.17 And so they paid for everything. 00:14:02.20\00:14:04.67 They paid your tuition, your books. 00:14:04.71\00:14:07.28 They paid everything 00:14:07.31\00:14:08.64 and it was an accelerated program. 00:14:08.68\00:14:10.81 And in nine months, I was able to get my teaching, 00:14:10.85\00:14:13.68 my state license to teach in an elementary school. 00:14:13.72\00:14:18.25 And God blessed me so much. 00:14:18.29\00:14:21.16 Kim, I made a 4.0, a 4.0. 00:14:21.19\00:14:25.39 And I just thought about the individuals 00:14:25.43\00:14:28.53 in the past who said I was not college material. 00:14:28.56\00:14:31.70 And my testimony is that 00:14:31.73\00:14:34.34 no matter what anyone tells you, 00:14:34.37\00:14:36.84 you never know what God can do. 00:14:36.87\00:14:39.37 And that's why I say, "You can do all things 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.81 through Christ Jesus who strengthens you." 00:14:41.84\00:14:44.51 And since that time, I've been an educator now for 22 years. 00:14:44.55\00:14:48.95 In the way, so you ended up-- you are a teacher. 00:14:48.98\00:14:51.52 Yes, I teach. 00:14:51.55\00:14:52.89 And people told him that he would never get his degree. 00:14:52.92\00:14:55.19 Other teachers. Other teachers. 00:14:55.22\00:14:56.86 And you are a teacher. Right. 00:14:56.89\00:14:58.23 And that college professor, I would never say his name, 00:14:58.26\00:15:01.56 and I see him a lot on my weekend and I just smile. 00:15:01.60\00:15:05.47 You know, I shook his hand 00:15:05.50\00:15:07.94 in three commencement services at Oakwood. 00:15:07.97\00:15:11.37 But God has been so good to me all of my life, 00:15:11.41\00:15:15.84 from the time I was born to even today. 00:15:15.88\00:15:19.71 I'm very busy and active in the Adventist Church. 00:15:19.75\00:15:22.88 I believe that has kept me along with God and His Spirit. 00:15:22.92\00:15:26.96 I wear mini hats. 00:15:26.99\00:15:28.46 I'm the chaplain 00:15:28.49\00:15:30.99 for the Motor City Youth Federation. 00:15:31.03\00:15:34.00 I'm also an ordained Elder. 00:15:34.03\00:15:36.06 I have been ordained Elder in my church, 00:15:36.10\00:15:38.83 in Seventh-day Adventist Church for 20 years now. 00:15:38.87\00:15:42.80 I'm the education leader in my church. 00:15:42.84\00:15:46.41 I'm on the Peterson-Warren Academy, School board. 00:15:46.44\00:15:51.11 Just I can't get enough. 00:15:51.15\00:15:53.42 Can't get enough. God bless. 00:15:53.45\00:15:54.78 So what happened to the pretty lady you met 00:15:54.82\00:15:56.75 at Kentucky Fried Chicken? 00:15:56.79\00:15:58.15 Well unfortunately, she left the church. 00:15:58.19\00:16:02.82 And that was very sad for me. I began to send her literature. 00:16:02.86\00:16:07.96 I enrolled her into the Message magazine. 00:16:08.00\00:16:10.87 I sent her tracks. 00:16:10.90\00:16:12.80 I would pray for her 00:16:12.83\00:16:14.64 and even today I continue to pray for her 00:16:14.67\00:16:17.51 that one day she would come back to-- 00:16:17.54\00:16:19.67 She is in this area? 00:16:19.71\00:16:21.21 Yes, she lives in the Detroit area. 00:16:21.24\00:16:24.11 And, you know, I just continue to pray for her. 00:16:24.15\00:16:28.15 And you know, and the Lord blessed you, however you know, 00:16:28.18\00:16:30.95 with a beautiful wife, two beautiful children, 00:16:30.99\00:16:33.49 a son now at Oakwood. 00:16:33.52\00:16:34.99 Yes, my son is at Oakwood University. 00:16:35.02\00:16:37.06 And is he enjoying himself? He loves it. 00:16:37.09\00:16:39.09 He says, " Dad," he says, "I love it." 00:16:39.13\00:16:41.20 And he says, "It's easy right now 00:16:41.23\00:16:42.83 but I know it's going to get harder." 00:16:42.86\00:16:44.40 I say, " Yes son, it's gonna get harder 00:16:44.43\00:16:46.10 but God will pull you through." 00:16:46.13\00:16:48.07 And I was so proud of my son 00:16:48.10\00:16:49.77 because he was able to receive some scholarships 00:16:49.80\00:16:53.34 from the United Negro College Fund. 00:16:53.38\00:16:55.34 I mean God blessed him so much. 00:16:55.38\00:16:58.25 In September he received a scholarship 00:16:58.28\00:17:00.32 from UNCF for 6,000. 00:17:00.35\00:17:03.05 And then two weeks later 00:17:03.08\00:17:04.52 he received another scholarship for 5000. 00:17:04.55\00:17:07.52 And then he received a scholarship 00:17:07.56\00:17:09.69 from Oakwood University for $25,000 00:17:09.72\00:17:14.20 to cover the four years. 00:17:14.23\00:17:15.70 And let me just go back. 00:17:15.73\00:17:17.07 UNCF is United Negro College Fund 00:17:17.10\00:17:19.73 and that supports our United Negro college, 00:17:19.77\00:17:23.07 black colleges. 00:17:23.10\00:17:24.54 And so that fund is a instrumental 00:17:24.57\00:17:26.68 helping our young black students get through school. 00:17:26.71\00:17:29.84 This is. This is really amazing story. 00:17:29.88\00:17:32.95 I guess my story is similar to yours, 00:17:32.98\00:17:35.42 you know, where we talk about being in high school 00:17:35.45\00:17:38.92 and being told that you never could be college material. 00:17:38.95\00:17:42.86 And yet just keep going and you keep going. 00:17:42.89\00:17:45.36 You're right, never give up. 00:17:45.39\00:17:46.73 Never give up. Never give up. 00:17:46.76\00:17:48.10 But what I also want to ask you is, 00:17:48.13\00:17:50.07 tell us about the time that you and Kim 00:17:50.10\00:17:52.37 went down to Down South and she went to jail. 00:17:52.40\00:17:56.24 Who said I went to jail. I never went to jail. 00:17:56.27\00:17:59.91 Could you tell the story? Elder Larry, tell the story. 00:17:59.94\00:18:04.45 Well, we were traveling. 00:18:04.48\00:18:06.41 We were going back to Oakwood 00:18:06.45\00:18:09.12 and we stopped in Nashville, Tennessee. 00:18:09.15\00:18:12.79 Now Kim and I of course, 00:18:12.82\00:18:14.29 we're from Detroit up north we're northerners 00:18:14.32\00:18:16.62 and I guess Kim didn't know her history too well. 00:18:16.66\00:18:19.69 We were in the Deep South. Deep South. 00:18:19.73\00:18:21.46 And things are different in the South. 00:18:21.50\00:18:22.86 In the 70s. 00:18:22.90\00:18:24.23 Yes, especially in the 70s. 00:18:24.27\00:18:25.60 I know, you know, the voters' rights and things 00:18:25.63\00:18:28.07 that we're happening but still in certain parts of the South 00:18:28.10\00:18:30.81 in the early 70s, in the mid 70s as well. 00:18:30.84\00:18:34.18 There was still a lot of racism and prejudice. 00:18:34.21\00:18:37.05 And so I knew where I was at then. 00:18:37.08\00:18:39.68 Kim, I tell you we were at the bus station. 00:18:39.71\00:18:44.29 I think, was it? Trailways. 00:18:44.32\00:18:46.89 Okay we were transferring to get 00:18:46.92\00:18:48.72 the bus in Nashville to Huntsville. 00:18:48.76\00:18:51.96 And that's where the police picked you up? 00:18:51.99\00:18:53.36 Well, no, they didn't pick her up. 00:18:53.40\00:18:54.73 You know, what Kim... 00:18:54.76\00:18:56.10 There was no wound or anything for my wrist. 00:18:56.13\00:18:58.13 Kim was saying something to the police officers 00:18:58.17\00:19:01.10 and I was saying, "Kim, please, you know, just be quite. 00:19:01.14\00:19:04.31 Don't say anything. 00:19:04.34\00:19:05.67 I said, we are in a South you need to," 00:19:05.71\00:19:07.44 and you know, and she was, you know, 00:19:07.48\00:19:10.21 I think I told the policeman there, 00:19:10.25\00:19:12.68 she was a little touchy or something 00:19:12.71\00:19:14.12 and she hadn't had her medication. 00:19:14.15\00:19:15.85 He did. I was praying. 00:19:15.88\00:19:17.55 Because I want to get to Oakwood. 00:19:17.59\00:19:19.35 I didn't want to be stuck in jail somewhere. 00:19:19.39\00:19:23.22 You know, we got to in. 00:19:23.26\00:19:24.59 I said, "Officer please, 00:19:24.63\00:19:25.96 you know, just don't pay any attention. 00:19:25.99\00:19:28.20 She is a little touch, you know. 00:19:28.23\00:19:29.93 We're students going to Oakwood in Huntsville, Alabama. 00:19:29.96\00:19:34.64 And we're just trying to and please, and I said, "Kim, 00:19:34.67\00:19:37.44 please be quite." 00:19:37.47\00:19:38.81 And you know Kim. She likes to talk... 00:19:38.84\00:19:40.41 How I do know that. I said, Kim... 00:19:40.44\00:19:42.38 Hey, even you know, I have a valid point. 00:19:42.41\00:19:44.75 And when that two police officers came up to us 00:19:44.78\00:19:49.05 we're minding our own business. 00:19:49.08\00:19:50.69 Yes, we were. But I told, "Man, listen. 00:19:50.72\00:19:52.05 I'm from Detroit. 00:19:52.09\00:19:53.42 We're not going for that. All right." 00:19:53.46\00:19:55.22 But we were not in Detroit at that time. 00:19:55.26\00:19:56.86 Lord, have mercy. Things were different. 00:19:56.89\00:19:58.23 And so he said, he was gonna lock me up. 00:19:58.26\00:20:00.56 He said, "I will take you, right now, to jail." 00:20:00.60\00:20:02.36 I said, "You're not taking me anywhere. 00:20:02.40\00:20:03.73 I got rights." 00:20:03.77\00:20:05.10 That's when Larry, Larry, that Elder came out. 00:20:05.13\00:20:07.60 "Kim, you need to be quiet." No, I don't have to be quite. 00:20:07.64\00:20:09.97 And I get all loud. 00:20:10.01\00:20:11.34 You know, how we shake our heads and things. 00:20:11.37\00:20:13.14 But the Lord intervened 00:20:13.17\00:20:14.58 and I was able to get on that bus. 00:20:14.61\00:20:15.98 Praise the lord. Oh, Larry, thank you very much. 00:20:16.01\00:20:17.81 I mean, this-- 00:20:17.85\00:20:19.18 Well, she could have a criminal record. 00:20:19.21\00:20:20.55 Yes, I know. You know, she could. 00:20:20.58\00:20:22.32 You know, I want to clear it up, 00:20:22.35\00:20:23.69 I have no criminal records. 00:20:23.72\00:20:25.22 No warrants for my arrest. 00:20:25.25\00:20:26.59 I have a valid driver's license. 00:20:26.62\00:20:27.96 Thank the Lord. But you almost went to jail. 00:20:27.99\00:20:29.49 That was how many years ago. 00:20:29.52\00:20:31.39 And we made it through school. We made it through. 00:20:31.43\00:20:33.40 Working and being diligent, you know. 00:20:33.43\00:20:36.06 Larry was like my protector. 00:20:36.10\00:20:37.43 He's my big brother. He's my protector. 00:20:37.47\00:20:38.80 Because you had criminal potential. 00:20:38.83\00:20:41.77 You know, in school Oakwood university again, 00:20:41.80\00:20:43.64 is in Huntsville, Alabama 00:20:43.67\00:20:45.01 is one of our Seventh-day Adventist schools, 00:20:45.04\00:20:47.51 our college of higher education. 00:20:47.54\00:20:49.61 And I think that it was so important 00:20:49.64\00:20:53.31 because we have to stay together 00:20:53.35\00:20:54.68 because we were from Detroit. 00:20:54.72\00:20:56.85 And the school was in the south 00:20:56.89\00:20:58.22 and we had gone to school in Detroit. 00:20:58.25\00:21:00.09 Yes. And things were very different. 00:21:00.12\00:21:01.99 But yes, Larry helped me to stay and to control. 00:21:02.02\00:21:03.93 Praise the Lord.
