00:01 Hi, I'm Dr. Kim Logan-Nowlin.
00:02 And I'm Arthur Nowlin. 00:04 Welcome to "Making It Work." 00:37 Today on "Making It Work," we're talking about 00:40 the Making of Success, Higher Education. 00:43 Arthur, when you think about all that-- 00:45 we both have gone through to acquire education 00:48 has it been beneficial to our lives? 00:50 There's no doubt it's been beneficial. 00:52 What I'm thinking about is, 00:54 you know, when we go through a process that's it. 00:56 I'm thinking about a process that 00:58 you have to go through throughout your life. 01:00 The more that you invest in that process-- 01:04 The more successful you'll be. 01:05 So that commitment-- it takes commitment? 01:07 Fortitude and even when it gets vary you can't see, 01:11 what's going to happen, you got to stay with that. 01:14 And it takes motivation. 01:15 It takes a lot of motivation. 01:17 And also what about peer pressure, 01:18 you know, you coming from high school 01:20 going to college and even coming out of college? 01:22 Well, the thing about peer pressure is consistent, 01:25 whether like you say whether you are in high school, college 01:28 or wherever, even though in the-- 01:30 in the work force. 01:31 But the way you deal with peer pressure 01:34 is the most significant thing. 01:36 You have to have really intestinal fortitude 01:39 to resist some of the things that occur 01:41 when your friends are trying to encourage to do 01:43 the things against your-- you know, 01:45 what you're used to doing. 01:46 Because you want to keep your eye on the prize, 01:48 we know the prize is Jesus Christ 01:50 but the prize will also come as you stay focused. 01:53 I want to share us something with you Arthur, 01:55 according to recent stats, statistics graduation rate 01:59 for African-American females 42 percent. 02:03 Forty two percent. Forty percent. 02:05 Where is the graduation rate for African-American males? 02:08 Thirty five. Thirty five. 02:10 But-- but-- but I have good news. 02:12 We have increased by two percent 02:14 in the last year, all right. 02:17 Well, it increasing or doing better is good. 02:20 You know, but it's not good enough. 02:22 But we want to get to the 100 percent. 02:24 I've seen our young people, 02:26 African-Americans from your school. 02:27 I'm really concerned about 35 percent 02:29 for African-American male. 02:30 Most definitely, you know, now let me say this, 02:33 I want to read a quote to you, all right. 02:35 William J Edwards, 02:37 "Education is the source of all and what we have 02:41 and the spring of all our future joys." 02:43 Yes. William J Edward. 02:46 And then I want to read another one Charles Hamilton Houston 02:49 "Without education, without education, 02:53 there is no hope for our people 02:55 and without hope, our future is lost." 02:59 Excellent, you know, and I agree 100 percent. 03:02 You know, but that's something is better than that, 03:04 Hosea 4:6, "My people perish from the lack of knowledge." 03:09 All right. Okay. 03:10 So I-- I just want to just give a little history. 03:13 We're gonna be talking to three young ladies today. 03:15 But first we're gonna start off with two. 03:18 And we are just excited to have them both Bria Sanford 03:22 and we also have Regina Gray. 03:24 Welcome to "Making it Work." 03:26 Hi. Okay. 03:48 And Bria, where did you complete? 03:49 Waverly High School. 03:50 Waverly High School. 03:51 Where is that? In Lansing, Michigan. 03:53 Lansing, Michigan. Okay, so now... 03:57 Why was finishing high school so important, Regina? 04:01 Finishing high school was important to me 04:03 because I have family members that graduated 04:06 from high school at age 15. 04:08 And they were the topper of their class graduating. 04:11 So I know with my mom, 04:12 being on my back you must get A's and B's no C's 04:15 and that she really worked hard to get to A's, 04:17 to get A's and maybe like one C. 04:20 But if I do get a C is punishment 04:22 and I know I got to step my game up. 04:24 Education to me is like getting me ready for college 04:27 and to head on with my major and to learn more. 04:30 Just like I'm in college now 04:32 and I'm still learning information 04:33 when I go to Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. 04:36 Because you started college 04:37 before hand you're in a community college. 04:39 And you're taking how many classes? 04:41 I'm taking two. Two. 04:43 English. 04:44 But said is like oh, I'm taking two. 04:47 And I love them. And you love the work? 04:49 I love the work. 04:50 It's like even though I stay up like 04:52 four o'clock in the morning, but me writing the papers, 04:55 I have to have one C on one of my paper 04:57 and that how things appears 04:58 for teaching me the English skills. 05:00 So you're getting-- you're getting 05:01 and that's what I do before I love to go off to school, 05:04 I started at the community college, 05:05 took some classes and I came in as an advance freshman 05:09 and it was worth it, all right. 05:11 So you-- you decided 05:13 to take these classes to better you life 05:15 because we know education 05:17 improves the quality of our lives 05:19 Okay, now you're going to be what's your major? 05:22 Social work with the minor Spanish. 05:25 ( speaking in foreign language ) 05:31 Stop there. 05:33 I'm so happy for you. 05:34 And I like that. Actually that been pretty well. 05:38 That you know Brother Nowlin is a social worker. 05:41 Well, you know, I'm-- 05:43 I'm sure that they may my philosophy in life 05:47 is different from hers by her being 05:49 at clinical psychologist leads tend to have a difference 05:52 in understanding about certain things 05:55 and our method-- methodology in the way 05:57 we deal with things is different. 05:58 Oh, that's okay, 05:59 but we all are in this to help people. 06:02 Social work is just outstanding. 06:05 Social work is all right. 06:06 I think we have-- we have probably 06:08 the opportunity to do more then a clinical psychology. 06:11 Maybe so, but I'm just happen 06:12 to be able to sever, you know. 06:14 Now let's talk about you Bria, 06:15 what is your area, what's your major 06:17 and why did you decide to finish high school? 06:19 Okay, in my area is communications. 06:22 And the concentration public relations. 06:24 Okay. 06:26 The reason why I want to go to college 06:27 is I thought education is really important. 06:30 It builds your character, 06:32 makes you wiser the way you talk, 06:34 the way you walk, the way you handle yourself 06:35 just the education just for as you and on all aspects. 06:39 So that's why we want it. 06:40 You wanted so it was always it was never a question, 06:43 you were not like drop out of high school. 06:45 Oh, no. That was not even a option. 06:46 Because my-- oh, my mother, no. 06:47 No. Oh, no. 06:49 So what got you to a point 06:50 where you were interested in communication? 06:54 Last year I'm-- I'm really good with people 06:57 and I started liking the radio. 06:59 So that was really that helped me out there 07:01 and yeah, the radio. 07:05 Yeah, and this year you do something, 07:06 tell them what you did this summer at camp meeting. 07:08 Again camp meetings where we meet once a year 07:11 and we have a spiritual retreat for 10 days. 07:15 So tell them what happened to you 07:17 at our Lake Region camp meeting and catch up with Michigan. 07:20 Okay, so I was working, I was volunteering 07:23 at for the children's ministry to work for 10 days 07:26 and I was like, okay, I saw the radio, 07:28 and I was look like I want to be in the-- 07:30 I want to be the DJ, I just wanted to do. 07:33 So somebody told me that they had opening spot 07:36 and I just volunteered to like come in maybe for a show, 07:39 and then Mr. Young he asked me, 07:43 just to do one show, I was like, yeah, thank you. 07:46 They are great Ray and Debbi Young, 07:47 they see and they see great potential in people, 07:49 and give them opportunity. 07:50 They offered us a program many years ago. 07:54 And it's been a blessing, 07:55 I thank God for that on Quiet Moment Radio. 07:58 So go ahead. 07:59 You know, communication is so vast, 08:03 I know you said that 08:05 you are more interested in radio why not TV? 08:09 I think radio, it gives you more personal. 08:12 Okay. 08:13 I think it's more personally 08:14 and TV I'm really that's not my thing. 08:18 All right, and it is good that you already know 08:20 what you want and then you put it before the Lord. 08:22 Are you both Christians? 08:24 Oh, yes. 08:25 Oh, you say that with such enthusiasm. 08:27 All right, you love the Lord? Amen. 08:29 I mean, you're young and you-- 08:30 and you're still going to church. 08:33 You're still involved with the church? 08:34 Yes. Okay, why? 08:37 Well, when even playing, even my high school years 08:39 and my growing up I've learned just to trust God, 08:44 because like the situations, I had rough situations 08:47 and I learned to just trust God throughout my situations. 08:50 Yes. All right. 08:51 Well, for me I think I'm just being involved 08:54 in church is very important. 08:58 I think it's very important because we need to, you know, 09:01 when you go to church on a daily when you-- 09:03 you have a big relationship with God. 09:05 And it is a big-- it's helpful 09:08 when you're in a situation, you know. 09:09 Not even if you are in a situation, 09:11 if you just want to have a conversation with the Lord. 09:13 All right. It just helps us. 09:14 So what are some of things you've done in church? 09:16 I know, the choir, you know usher, what-- 09:19 what aspects that you serve the church? 09:21 I was in a usher team, I'm in the praise team. 09:25 I'm, I'm PA which is a Public Affairs. 09:30 All right. 09:31 I'm, yes, and I'm in the choir, I'm assistant. 09:36 That's nice. Why is that important? 20:38 I just, I want to 20:41 because first of all for social work 20:43 you can't really get a good job with just a bachelor's degree. 20:48 So I want to continue to get my masters 20:50 and but maybe get my degree in occupational therapy. 20:54 Oh, okay. 20:55 But that's still upon the carriages 20:56 and another thought. 20:58 Okay, occupational therapy. 21:00 Well, you know-- I know, 21:03 whether Nowlin has his license of social work. 21:05 So you have, you're gonna have some mentors here to help you. 21:08 And it's gonna be a blessing. 21:09 You even have a place to come and mentor that clinic. 21:12 You can come, he would love to put you to work, all right 21:15 because you know he loves the God cause, all right. 21:17 He will be a excellent mentor 21:20 and a place for you to do your internship. 21:23 I've seen great things happen in people's lives 21:25 because in the field of social work. 21:28 It would probably really interesting if you, 21:31 when you make your decision 21:33 on what particular area of social work 21:35 people want to work in, you know, so you know, 21:37 you like working with people so that's gonna be 21:40 something working with children, people, families. 21:43 So you know enjoy your-- your mission out 21:46 in Korea in teaching English 21:48 and coming back and speak in Korean. 21:50 That's gonna be great. We'll see. 21:52 You are single. You're not married. 21:54 No children, girl, enjoy your life. 21:56 Not to say being married and having chosen 21:58 it's wonderful when you're ready for it. 22:01 You know, but taking your life 22:04 and looking at your life just say, 22:06 I can do something different. 22:07 I can take a risk 22:08 and Brother Nowlin always says what? 22:10 Take a risk. Take a risk. 22:11 You don't know what God has for you. 22:14 But God is a God of greatness 22:17 and so therefore you know there are things that 22:19 He can do over and abundantly for you. 22:22 And that He has for you. 22:23 And I believe Bianca that He has someone there special 22:27 for you to witness to about Jesus Christ. 22:29 Oh, yes, He most definitely have I believe that too. 22:32 Okay. He's finished high school. 23:22 Yeah, he's is finished. 23:23 Did you talk to him about one particular school 23:24 he's interested in going to? 23:26 No, I think he's still undecided. 23:29 Okay, and you have a older brother. 23:31 Yes.
