Hi, I'm Dr. Kim Logan-Nowlin. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.59 And I'm Arthur Nowlin. 00:00:02.62\00:00:03.98 Welcome to "Making It Work." 00:00:04.01\00:00:06.16 Today on "Making It Work," we're talking about 00:00:37.56\00:00:40.42 the Making of Success, Higher Education. 00:00:40.45\00:00:43.81 Arthur, when you think about all that-- 00:00:43.84\00:00:45.90 we both have gone through to acquire education 00:00:45.93\00:00:48.00 has it been beneficial to our lives? 00:00:48.03\00:00:50.30 There's no doubt it's been beneficial. 00:00:50.33\00:00:52.51 What I'm thinking about is, 00:00:52.54\00:00:54.07 you know, when we go through a process that's it. 00:00:54.10\00:00:56.61 I'm thinking about a process that 00:00:56.64\00:00:58.47 you have to go through throughout your life. 00:00:58.50\00:01:00.86 The more that you invest in that process-- 00:01:00.89\00:01:04.26 The more successful you'll be. 00:01:04.29\00:01:05.72 So that commitment-- it takes commitment? 00:01:05.75\00:01:07.95 Fortitude and even when it gets vary you can't see, 00:01:07.98\00:01:11.93 what's going to happen, you got to stay with that. 00:01:11.96\00:01:14.18 And it takes motivation. 00:01:14.21\00:01:15.43 It takes a lot of motivation. 00:01:15.46\00:01:17.13 And also what about peer pressure, 00:01:17.16\00:01:18.86 you know, you coming from high school 00:01:18.89\00:01:20.82 going to college and even coming out of college? 00:01:20.85\00:01:22.83 Well, the thing about peer pressure is consistent, 00:01:22.86\00:01:25.47 whether like you say whether you are in high school, college 00:01:25.50\00:01:28.15 or wherever, even though in the-- 00:01:28.18\00:01:30.19 in the work force. 00:01:30.22\00:01:31.49 But the way you deal with peer pressure 00:01:31.52\00:01:34.63 is the most significant thing. 00:01:34.66\00:01:36.66 You have to have really intestinal fortitude 00:01:36.69\00:01:39.54 to resist some of the things that occur 00:01:39.57\00:01:41.42 when your friends are trying to encourage to do 00:01:41.45\00:01:43.74 the things against your-- you know, 00:01:43.77\00:01:45.61 what you're used to doing. 00:01:45.64\00:01:46.89 Because you want to keep your eye on the prize, 00:01:46.92\00:01:48.56 we know the prize is Jesus Christ 00:01:48.59\00:01:50.20 but the prize will also come as you stay focused. 00:01:50.23\00:01:53.09 I want to share us something with you Arthur, 00:01:53.12\00:01:55.12 according to recent stats, statistics graduation rate 00:01:55.15\00:01:59.88 for African-American females 42 percent. 00:01:59.91\00:02:03.55 Forty two percent. Forty percent. 00:02:03.58\00:02:05.38 Where is the graduation rate for African-American males? 00:02:05.41\00:02:08.52 Thirty five. Thirty five. 00:02:08.55\00:02:10.63 But-- but-- but I have good news. 00:02:10.66\00:02:12.55 We have increased by two percent 00:02:12.58\00:02:14.79 in the last year, all right. 00:02:14.82\00:02:17.05 Well, it increasing or doing better is good. 00:02:17.08\00:02:20.58 You know, but it's not good enough. 00:02:20.61\00:02:22.07 But we want to get to the 100 percent. 00:02:22.10\00:02:24.17 I've seen our young people, 00:02:24.20\00:02:26.15 African-Americans from your school. 00:02:26.18\00:02:27.50 I'm really concerned about 35 percent 00:02:27.53\00:02:29.38 for African-American male. 00:02:29.41\00:02:30.79 Most definitely, you know, now let me say this, 00:02:30.82\00:02:33.34 I want to read a quote to you, all right. 00:02:33.37\00:02:35.12 William J Edwards, 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.22 "Education is the source of all and what we have 00:02:37.25\00:02:41.12 and the spring of all our future joys." 00:02:41.15\00:02:43.66 Yes. William J Edward. 00:02:43.69\00:02:45.99 And then I want to read another one Charles Hamilton Houston 00:02:46.02\00:02:49.71 "Without education, without education, 00:02:49.74\00:02:53.31 there is no hope for our people 00:02:53.34\00:02:55.46 and without hope, our future is lost." 00:02:55.49\00:02:59.62 Excellent, you know, and I agree 100 percent. 00:02:59.65\00:03:02.39 You know, but that's something is better than that, 00:03:02.42\00:03:04.47 Hosea 4:6, "My people perish from the lack of knowledge." 00:03:04.50\00:03:09.34 All right.
