What was the finished song? 00:02:55.06\00:02:56.94 "Today I will shout," that was my first song ever written. 00:02:56.97\00:02:59.02 Oh, wow and how old were you when you wrote it? 00:02:59.05\00:03:01.71 Um, I was about 26 or 27. 00:03:01.74\00:03:06.82 Wow, you don't look older than that now 00:03:06.85\00:03:08.58 so I'm not even going to go there. 00:03:08.61\00:03:10.39 Thank you. 00:03:10.42\00:03:12.15 That's wonderful so when he went back, you had a song... 00:03:12.18\00:03:16.37 Finished song, I had just purchased a guitar 00:03:16.40\00:03:18.26 and I didn't know how to play it 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.07 but I would pick things out of the guitar 00:03:20.10\00:03:22.41 and we'd just, from there I wrote the song. 00:03:22.44\00:03:24.91 Oh, wow, that's incredible. 00:03:24.94\00:03:26.90 So now what are you doing musically? 00:03:26.93\00:03:29.42 What's your ministry now? 00:03:29.45\00:03:31.08 Um, I'm just, I'm writing and I'm singing a lot. 00:03:31.11\00:03:35.04 I am a street musician, Music Under New York Program, 00:03:35.07\00:03:38.34 I'm-- Oh, tell us about that. 00:03:38.37\00:03:39.45 Well, in-- when I initially came to the US, 00:03:39.48\00:03:43.77 I would go through New York City 00:03:43.80\00:03:45.56 and, you know, through the subway system, 00:03:45.59\00:03:47.67 you'll see these musicians playing on the side 00:03:47.70\00:03:49.88 but everybody will do their, 00:03:49.91\00:03:51.03 you know, whatever their genre was 00:03:51.06\00:03:52.74 but I'm like, oh, this is a great way to do ministry, 00:03:52.77\00:03:56.75 why not get into this? 00:03:56.78\00:03:57.81 And so I, uh, straight out of my tour last year, 00:03:57.84\00:04:00.53 I went and auditioned, they sent me an invitation 00:04:00.56\00:04:03.92 that I'd been accepted for the audition and I went. 00:04:03.95\00:04:07.31 I think that morning we drove in, 00:04:07.34\00:04:09.38 and that same morning I had to rush to Grand Central Station 00:04:09.41\00:04:12.62 to do the audition and I did and two weeks later, 00:04:12.65\00:04:15.18 they're like, you're accepted 00:04:15.21\00:04:16.24 and I'm like, oh, this is like 00:04:16.27\00:04:18.34 out of a list of like 600 and something musicians 00:04:18.37\00:04:21.58 and I was able to, 00:04:21.61\00:04:23.02 you know, God really did His thing. 00:04:23.05\00:04:24.98 That's tremendous. Amen. 00:04:25.01\00:04:26.74 You know, a lot of people might not realize 00:04:26.77\00:04:28.70 what a subway musician does, 00:04:28.73\00:04:31.23 but in going, you know, back and forth in New York, 00:04:31.26\00:04:36.00 I would see people singing or playing 00:04:36.03\00:04:38.51 or something, personally, I'm just so-- 00:04:38.54\00:04:41.27 I'm shy, I'm too shy to do that, 00:04:41.30\00:04:43.17 I think it takes a certain-- 00:04:43.20\00:04:45.65 I don't know, I guess a certain anointing to do that 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.85 because that's like, 00:04:48.88\00:04:50.19 that's such a blessing to be able to minister that way. 00:04:50.22\00:04:52.80 It is-- 00:04:52.83\00:04:53.86 And they're not worried about who's walking by 00:04:53.89\00:04:56.03 and thinking anything or whatever. 00:04:56.06\00:04:58.00 It gets-- sometimes it gets a little bit tricky. 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.86 Initially when I had-- 'cause it's a three hour slot. 00:05:00.89\00:05:03.94 I have to sing for three hours continuously. 00:05:03.97\00:05:05.65 Wow. 00:05:05.68\00:05:06.71 And so it's a lot, the first time, 00:05:06.74\00:05:08.38 you know, I went, I was like, oh, yeah, I can do this 00:05:08.41\00:05:10.70 and I sang, I think after half hour I was just like... 00:05:10.73\00:05:14.27 I'm done but, you know, 00:05:14.30\00:05:17.86 just kind of moving on and going along. 00:05:17.89\00:05:21.53 Sometime it feels a little bit weird when, you know, 00:05:21.56\00:05:23.88 folks are passing and it's like, they come in 00:05:23.91\00:05:26.09 because they hear, you know, the vocals 00:05:26.12\00:05:27.78 but then they stand for a second 00:05:27.81\00:05:29.50 and they realize, wait, no, it's gospel 00:05:29.53\00:05:31.92 and you can see them fighting themselves like, 00:05:31.95\00:05:34.01 should I stand up? 00:05:34.04\00:05:35.07 Should I walk away? 00:05:35.10\00:05:36.13 Sometimes they'll walk away and they come back 00:05:36.16\00:05:37.49 and they're like, wait, this is good but it's gospel. 00:05:37.52\00:05:40.71 And so it reminded me because one of my aim was-- 00:05:40.74\00:05:45.96 is to be that girl to take the gospel message 00:05:45.99\00:05:48.56 the last heir that needs to hear it before Christ comes 00:05:48.59\00:05:51.23 and I'm like, well, I don't really need to go 00:05:51.26\00:05:53.04 to the ends of the world to do that 00:05:53.07\00:05:54.29 because the ends of the world are coming 00:05:54.32\00:05:55.67 through the subway system right here. 00:05:55.70\00:05:57.26 Come on, come on. 00:05:57.29\00:05:58.96 So, you know, I'm like, God is putting me wherever, 00:05:58.99\00:06:02.16 you know, this is where He's putting me 00:06:02.19\00:06:03.92 so I'm like, hey, Lord, do Your thing, just use me. 00:06:03.95\00:06:06.85 That is so wonderful. Let's hear it for the Oaks. 00:14:16.39\00:14:18.36 Of course, that's right, Oakwood. 00:14:18.39\00:14:20.52 And a lot of people, 00:14:20.55\00:14:22.22 they think of Oakwood as a theology school 00:14:22.25\00:14:24.18 but it's really an undercover performing arts school 00:14:24.21\00:14:26.75 and so... 00:14:26.78\00:14:28.20 It is so true, you know, when I went to Oakwood, 00:14:28.23\00:14:30.26 which we won't say when, but when I went there, 00:14:30.29\00:14:33.68 it's like everybody does something, 00:14:33.71\00:14:35.89 everybody sings or plays a piano 00:14:35.92\00:14:38.32 or plays an instrument or something, 00:14:38.35\00:14:39.94 there's so much talent there. 00:14:39.97\00:14:41.06 That's right. 00:14:41.09\00:14:42.14 So you started in elementary school 00:14:42.17\00:14:44.74 but then at Oakwood, did you kind of blossom or-- 00:14:44.77\00:14:47.51 I did, I did and I learnt to-- 00:14:47.54\00:14:50.71 I was already a musician who can play by ear 00:14:50.74\00:14:52.73 which is great because it doesn't limit you 00:14:52.76\00:14:54.81 to the type of music you can play 00:14:54.84\00:14:56.60 but when you get to Oakwood, 00:14:56.63\00:14:57.92 there are so many different people 00:14:57.95\00:14:59.45 who are really masters of their crafts at such a young age. 00:14:59.48\00:15:03.46 It forces you to really become more well-rounded 00:15:03.49\00:15:08.19 in what you can do with your technique, 00:15:08.22\00:15:09.77 with your tone, with the types of music you can play, 00:15:09.80\00:15:12.73 not just playing in the standard church keys, 00:15:12.76\00:15:14.99 you know, D-flat, you know, 00:15:15.02\00:15:16.81 you could play in some of the other ones too 00:15:16.84\00:15:18.64 but just by listening and being around 00:15:18.67\00:15:21.08 so many awesome musicians. 00:15:21.11\00:15:22.68 I played with eLDee I played with Sheila Frazier 00:15:22.71\00:15:26.48 then the Stephen Mackey's and Xavier O'Connor's, 00:15:26.51\00:15:28.78 the Eric Griggs, 00:15:28.81\00:15:30.02 all people now who are making money doing music. 00:15:30.05\00:15:33.75 Yes. 00:15:33.78\00:15:34.81 Those are the people who I got to hang around 00:15:34.84\00:15:36.64 and hone my craft around at their expense of their ears 00:15:36.67\00:15:39.42 and their studio time. 00:15:39.45\00:15:41.98 I'm sure they might say the same about you, 00:15:42.01\00:15:43.95 you know, that they got to hang with you 00:15:43.98\00:15:46.53 and kind of hone their craft as well. 00:15:46.56\00:15:48.77 But that's what happens at Oakwood. 00:15:48.80\00:15:51.05 I mean, you have the best singers 00:15:51.08\00:15:53.10 anywhere to me, are there. 00:15:53.13\00:15:55.63 I think part of it is, you know, 00:15:55.66\00:15:59.06 just the place, the spirituality, you know, 00:15:59.09\00:16:02.79 everybody is coming together from all over the country 00:16:02.82\00:16:05.90 and actually all over the world. 00:16:05.93\00:16:06.97 That's right. 00:16:07.00\00:16:08.04 And you just get the best, 00:16:08.07\00:16:09.10 you get the cream with the crops so... 00:16:09.13\00:16:10.89 There's, you know, a lot of Caribbeans there, 00:16:10.92\00:16:12.90 people from Bermuda. 00:16:12.93\00:16:14.25 And you have all these cultures mixing in 00:16:14.28\00:16:16.02 so you really get to play any and everything there 00:16:16.05\00:16:19.80 and it's just, it's a great way to really develop as a musician 00:16:19.83\00:16:23.99 so now when people go out, when you go out back home to-- 00:16:24.02\00:16:26.91 I'm from California so... 00:16:26.94\00:16:28.01 Okay. 00:16:28.04\00:16:29.23 We go back home, people know 00:16:29.26\00:16:30.99 that if you went to Oakwood, oh, she's okay. 00:16:31.02\00:16:33.18 Yeah, yeah. Kind of gives you clearance, right? 00:16:33.21\00:16:36.07 Yeah, it's almost like a free pass. 00:16:36.10\00:16:38.07 Everybody that didn't go to Oakwood, 00:16:38.10\00:16:39.32 don't feel badly because if you go there and visit, 00:16:39.35\00:16:42.10 maybe you can get like an honorary Oakwood pass 00:16:42.13\00:16:44.44 or something, no, 00:16:44.47\00:16:46.68 but Oakwood really was a blessing for me as well. 00:16:46.71\00:16:49.44 That's right. As well it was for me. 00:16:49.47\00:16:51.07 So after you left, 00:16:51.10\00:16:52.35 what did you do in music after you left college? 00:16:52.38\00:16:55.27 After I left Oakwood, I went back home to California 00:16:55.30\00:16:58.29 and there I play a lot in the churches 00:16:58.32\00:17:00.44 down there in the bay area and northern California 00:17:00.47\00:17:03.31 and I also, later on, I started choir directing 00:17:03.34\00:17:06.71 which I really enjoy it 00:17:06.74\00:17:07.87 because now I get to kind of do what I want. 00:17:07.90\00:17:11.37 But I enjoy that because when I was about 14 or 15, 00:17:11.40\00:17:15.46 we had-- my foster mother actually, 00:17:15.49\00:17:18.39 she took over the choir which sounded... 00:17:18.42\00:17:21.94 not very good. 00:17:21.97\00:17:23.75 It's quite painful, and she took over that choir 00:17:23.78\00:17:26.37 and it really blossomed 00:17:26.40\00:17:27.59 and so that had a lasting effect on me 00:17:27.62\00:17:29.70 because I'm not a vocalist but I do very well as a backup. 00:17:29.73\00:17:33.62 Uh-huh? 00:17:33.65\00:17:34.72 Backup, backup, I'm not a vocalist. 00:17:34.75\00:17:37.49 So now I can take those same skills 00:17:37.52\00:17:39.37 and help other people to really-- 00:17:39.40\00:17:41.59 who aren't necessarily going to be up there 00:17:41.62\00:17:43.67 for a 11 o'clock service but they like to sing 00:17:43.70\00:17:46.17 and I can use those skills to help them in an area 00:17:46.20\00:17:49.43 where they could be successful 00:17:49.46\00:17:50.62 and sound good and enjoy their ministry 00:17:50.65\00:17:52.61 so I really enjoy choir directing. 00:17:52.64\00:17:54.49 That's so good, you know, it's so amazing what God does 00:17:54.52\00:17:57.58 because even though this is not what you do for living, 00:17:57.61\00:18:00.37 you could because you're talented enough 00:18:00.40\00:18:02.08 but it's not what you do for living 00:18:02.11\00:18:04.38 and yet God has planted you somewhere 00:18:04.41\00:18:06.56 where you can just again, blossom and grow 00:18:06.59\00:18:09.60 and help others to blossom and grow as well. 00:18:09.63\00:18:12.38 So that is really, really great. 00:18:12.41\00:18:15.26 What do you do for living? 00:18:15.29\00:18:16.64 Tell us what you do with your day job? 00:18:16.67\00:18:19.89 My day job-- because it's very difficult 00:18:19.92\00:18:22.75 to make a living as a musician but in the daytime I teach-- 00:18:22.78\00:18:26.58 I'm actually at a small HBCU college down in Alabama 00:18:26.61\00:18:29.70 and I teach kinesiology and, 00:18:29.73\00:18:32.15 which is a fancy word for the study of movement. 00:18:32.18\00:18:34.34 Uh-huh. 00:18:34.37\00:18:35.41 And thesis writing courses, a couple different classes 00:18:35.44\00:18:38.25 and I also work in the athletic department 00:18:38.28\00:18:39.94 which is probably more of my favorite part of the job, 00:18:39.97\00:18:43.97 is working with athletics because I was a phys-Ed major, 00:18:44.00\00:18:46.80 I was a multi-sport athlete so I love working with people 00:18:46.83\00:18:49.73 and it actually, is what I think I was called to do 00:18:49.76\00:18:54.69 because it's the health ministry with an athletic 00:18:54.72\00:18:57.91 so it's a great way to promote health 00:18:57.94\00:19:00.99 and well being through a competitive sport forum. 00:19:01.02\00:19:03.98 That's great. 00:19:04.01\00:19:05.42 Well, we're gonna listen to Sabrina minister 00:19:05.45\00:19:08.52 to us in music. 00:19:08.55\00:19:09.83 The next I'm going to be playing is an old 00:23:39.84\00:23:42.74 but favorite song for me 00:23:42.77\00:23:44.06 and it's called "Speak to My Heart." 00:23:44.09\00:23:45.53 Magnify Him 00:27:44.21\00:27:48.95 Thank you so much for joining us. 00:27:48.98\00:27:50.76 Tune in next time and be blessed. 00:27:50.79\00:27:53.25
