I'm fine. 00:01:09.76\00:01:11.10 And thank you so much 00:01:11.13\00:01:12.47 for allowing me to be part of this. 00:01:12.50\00:01:13.84 Oh, God is good. 00:01:13.87\00:01:15.20 You know, we used to call you, 00:01:15.24\00:01:16.57 Arthur and I had a little name for you, 00:01:16.60\00:01:18.27 The Golden Boy. 00:01:18.31\00:01:19.64 Oh, wow. 00:01:19.67\00:01:21.01 Oh, this man has an amazing voice. 00:01:21.04\00:01:22.54 God has blessed you. 00:01:22.58\00:01:23.91 But today we're here to talk about the value of education. 00:01:23.95\00:01:26.58 Let's talk about your journey, and why you became an educator? 00:01:26.61\00:01:31.85 It seems like a long time ago, 00:01:31.89\00:01:34.52 but I was on path to go into the trades. 00:01:34.56\00:01:40.00 And I had an uncle that told me, 00:01:40.03\00:01:42.03 you know, don't do that. 00:01:42.06\00:01:43.63 Go to school and teach it. 00:01:43.67\00:01:45.13 But I want to be a doctor. 00:01:45.17\00:01:46.74 You know, I was, I was a little conflictual. 00:01:46.77\00:01:49.50 But I went off to Andrews University. 00:01:49.54\00:01:53.17 And because I was having trouble, 00:01:53.21\00:01:55.64 some of the local schools going to a classes and things, 00:01:55.68\00:01:58.91 scheduling. 00:01:58.95\00:02:00.28 So went to Andrews, and I was started, 00:02:00.32\00:02:02.72 I got a job working 00:02:02.75\00:02:04.09 at the Berrien County Juvenile Center. 00:02:04.12\00:02:07.39 And I thought to myself working with these young men. 00:02:07.42\00:02:10.16 What if I could really catch them at school, 00:02:10.19\00:02:13.80 if I could work with them there, 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.66 it's cemented the desire within my heart. 00:02:15.70\00:02:18.80 What my uncle said really made sense to me, 00:02:18.83\00:02:20.87 because I was battling with psychology, education. 00:02:20.90\00:02:24.37 And I've always been good in the sciences. 00:02:24.41\00:02:26.14 Yes. 00:02:26.17\00:02:27.51 And it settled me, helped me to focus 00:02:27.54\00:02:29.44 just on education. 00:02:29.48\00:02:30.81 And Dr. Benjamin Reeves called me one day. 00:02:30.85\00:02:33.08 Yes. 00:02:33.11\00:02:34.45 He said because everybody was always telling me, 00:02:34.48\00:02:35.88 Mike, you're running from the Lord. 00:02:35.92\00:02:37.32 You're supposed to be a preacher. 00:02:37.35\00:02:38.85 I was, when I was at Adelphian Academy, 00:02:38.89\00:02:41.06 I was a preacher of 17 different organizations 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.66 on campus. 00:02:43.69\00:02:45.03 What? Seventeen. 00:02:45.06\00:02:47.30 Everybody was, Mike, you're a good speaker 00:02:47.33\00:02:49.63 and you love the Lord. 00:02:49.66\00:02:51.00 You should be a preacher. 00:02:51.03\00:02:53.07 Dr. Benjamin Reeves grabbed me one day. 00:02:53.10\00:02:55.50 Because I was set on talking with Wintley Phipps. 00:02:55.54\00:02:57.37 Yes. 00:02:57.41\00:02:58.74 And people say, man, you can sing 00:02:58.77\00:03:00.11 and you can preach. 00:03:00.14\00:03:01.48 You know, you could be, maybe be another Wintley Phipps. 00:03:01.51\00:03:02.84 Oh, he grabbed me to come to my office. 00:03:02.88\00:03:04.95 He did. He sat me down. 00:03:04.98\00:03:06.92 He said one of the most remarkable experiences 00:03:06.95\00:03:09.15 he'd ever had 00:03:09.18\00:03:10.69 is when he was, he had to leave the ministry 00:03:10.72\00:03:14.66 to finish his PhD in Chicago. 00:03:14.69\00:03:16.32 Yes. 00:03:16.36\00:03:17.69 And he taught elementary school. 00:03:17.73\00:03:19.83 And he told me that was the most remarkable experience 00:03:19.86\00:03:23.10 he had ever had in terms of witnessing, 00:03:23.13\00:03:24.97 working with these little children. 00:03:25.00\00:03:26.50 He said, "Mike, you don't have to serve the Lord. 00:03:26.53\00:03:28.47 You don't have to be a pastor." 00:03:28.50\00:03:30.04 "Okay. 00:03:30.07\00:03:31.41 There's a mission field out there 00:03:31.44\00:03:32.77 in the school system 00:03:32.81\00:03:34.14 that you can be a part of." 00:03:34.18\00:03:35.51 He said focus on that. 00:03:35.54\00:03:36.88 I said thank and so ever since, ever since, 00:03:36.91\00:03:40.18 and between that and working with the young boys 00:03:40.22\00:03:42.52 at the Berrien County Juvenile Center, 00:03:42.55\00:03:44.75 and developing relationships with them, 00:03:44.79\00:03:46.99 and seeing their struggles. 00:03:47.02\00:03:48.36 Yes. 00:03:48.39\00:03:49.72 And I could relate to a lot of them. 00:03:49.76\00:03:51.09 What's funny, when I got there, 00:03:51.13\00:03:52.76 they gave me an assignment to work with a group of boys 00:03:52.79\00:03:55.80 who are the children of alcoholics. 00:03:55.83\00:03:58.47 I am the adult child of an alcoholic. 00:03:58.50\00:04:00.47 It's that right. 00:04:00.50\00:04:01.84 My father was a... 00:04:01.87\00:04:03.20 was what we call a functional alcoholic, 00:04:03.24\00:04:04.94 went to work, good provider, 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.91 kept us in home, had his own business, 00:04:06.94\00:04:08.78 worked in Chrysler's during the day, 00:04:08.81\00:04:10.85 went to barber school in evening, 00:04:10.88\00:04:12.45 bought an old gutted outbuilding 00:04:12.48\00:04:14.22 on 12th street in Detroit 00:04:14.25\00:04:15.58 and turned it into a barber shop 00:04:15.62\00:04:17.09 with his own little hands. 00:04:17.12\00:04:18.75 The wiring, the plumbing, the painting, 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.36 you name it, he did it. 00:04:20.39\00:04:22.19 We were proud of daddy. But daddy was an alcoholic. 00:04:22.22\00:04:24.86 Wow. You know. 00:04:24.89\00:04:26.33 So here, I'm assigned to these children. 00:04:26.36\00:04:28.66 These young boys. Yes. 00:04:28.70\00:04:30.37 I learned as much about myself as, 00:04:30.40\00:04:34.10 they helped me as much as I helped them. 00:04:34.14\00:04:35.50 Yes. 00:04:35.54\00:04:36.87 It really made me want to get into education. 00:04:36.91\00:04:39.17 Yes. 00:04:39.21\00:04:40.54 So... And that's where it started. 00:04:40.58\00:04:41.91 That's where it really started. 00:04:41.94\00:04:43.28 Let me go back and just let you know, 00:04:43.31\00:04:45.68 Andrews University 00:04:45.71\00:04:47.05 is one of our Seventh-day Adventist higher education, 00:04:47.08\00:04:50.62 undergraduate studies and also higher ed 00:04:50.65\00:04:53.79 is located in Berrien Springs, Michigan. 00:04:53.82\00:04:56.02 Adelphian Academy, 00:04:56.06\00:04:57.66 where Mike and I both attended is, 00:04:57.69\00:04:59.89 well, it's closed now 00:04:59.93\00:05:01.46 was a boarding school, 00:05:01.50\00:05:02.96 and we will come home once a month. 00:05:03.00\00:05:04.33 Yeah. 00:05:04.37\00:05:05.70 And we lived in the campus 00:05:05.73\00:05:07.07 and it prepared you for college. 00:05:07.10\00:05:09.34 And that was located in Holly, Michigan. 00:05:09.37\00:05:11.04 Holly, Michigan. 00:05:11.07\00:05:12.41 And so, these are the two schools 00:05:12.44\00:05:14.21 where Mike was at, one of the two schools 00:05:14.24\00:05:16.85 where he was educated. 00:05:16.88\00:05:18.21 So what happened after Andrews University? 00:05:18.25\00:05:20.98 Well, you know, I went to Western Michigan, 00:05:21.02\00:05:25.05 and I graduated from there 00:05:25.09\00:05:26.55 because the tuition at Andrews was just 00:05:26.59\00:05:28.72 become a bit of a deterrent. 00:05:28.76\00:05:31.56 And I finished at Western. 00:05:31.59\00:05:32.99 And after I graduated, 00:05:33.03\00:05:34.93 I got really good reviews 00:05:34.96\00:05:37.23 and letters of recommendation from my teachers. 00:05:37.27\00:05:39.07 Yes. 00:05:39.10\00:05:40.44 You know, in terms of my ability to teach, 00:05:40.47\00:05:41.80 and I was actually offered a teaching job in Kalamazoo, 00:05:41.84\00:05:45.81 at Loy Norrix High School. 00:05:45.84\00:05:47.18 I did my student teaching there. 00:05:47.21\00:05:48.54 Okay. 00:05:48.58\00:05:49.91 And when I finished, they offered me a job, 00:05:49.94\00:05:51.28 offered me a job. 00:05:51.31\00:05:52.65 Praise the lord. Yes. 00:05:52.68\00:05:54.02 But I came home, came home to Detroit. 00:05:54.05\00:05:56.38 Came back. Came back. 00:05:56.42\00:05:57.99 And because this is home. 00:05:58.02\00:05:59.35 Came back to give back. Came back to give back. 00:05:59.39\00:06:01.46 And my mission field was going to be the public schools. 00:06:01.49\00:06:06.63 And my focus was high school, 00:06:06.66\00:06:08.86 even though I'm certified to teach K through 12. 00:06:08.90\00:06:10.97 Yes. 00:06:11.00\00:06:12.33 I thought my niche is high school. 00:06:12.37\00:06:13.94 Yes. 00:06:13.97\00:06:15.30 And I wound up in infamous Cooley High School. 00:06:15.34\00:06:17.51 Cooley High School. 00:06:17.54\00:06:18.87 Rough, rough, rough. 00:06:18.91\00:06:21.61 Rough, you didn't even drive down the street 00:06:21.64\00:06:23.58 if you didn't have to. 00:06:23.61\00:06:25.51 I can remember while I was there. 00:06:25.55\00:06:27.88 One of the security guards had to shoot a student 00:06:27.92\00:06:30.29 because she was trying to run him over with a car. 00:06:30.32\00:06:33.36 You know, I had kids come at me to attack. 00:06:33.39\00:06:35.76 It was funny when they gave me my assignment. 00:06:35.79\00:06:40.20 I walked into a classroom was like watching a movie. 00:06:40.23\00:06:43.16 Kids were standing on top of desks, 00:06:43.20\00:06:44.60 throwing books, spit balls, laying on the floor. 00:06:44.63\00:06:48.40 You know, you name it. 00:06:48.44\00:06:50.07 Dennis, so here's your room. 00:06:50.11\00:06:51.47 These are your students. 00:06:51.51\00:06:52.94 Walked out, closed the door. 00:06:52.97\00:06:54.48 That was it. That was it. 00:06:54.51\00:06:55.84 Go for it, man. 00:06:55.88\00:06:57.55 And I picked up a paddle. 00:06:57.58\00:07:00.08 And I banged on the desk, just to get attention. 00:07:00.12\00:07:02.22 Yes. 00:07:02.25\00:07:03.59 I said, I'm here to teach you something. 00:07:03.62\00:07:04.95 If you want to learn, sit down. 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.32 Give me five minutes to prove to you 00:07:06.35\00:07:07.79 I've got something I can teach you. 00:07:07.82\00:07:10.06 Architecture class. 00:07:10.09\00:07:13.19 My focus was designed. 00:07:13.23\00:07:14.63 Is that right? 00:07:14.66\00:07:16.00 All right. 00:07:16.03\00:07:17.37 And they said, I said, 00:07:17.40\00:07:18.73 "Yeah, man, we'll give you a minute. 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.27 We'll give you a minute." 00:07:20.30\00:07:21.64 Like they're in charge. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:07:21.67\00:07:23.51 They were at the time. At the time. 00:07:23.54\00:07:25.41 And I went to the board, and I said, now listen to me, 00:07:25.44\00:07:27.11 I began to talk, put some things on the board. 00:07:27.14\00:07:28.68 They said, 00:07:28.71\00:07:30.05 "Hey, wow, that's interesting." 00:07:30.08\00:07:31.58 You know, hey, you sit down, 00:07:31.61\00:07:33.21 let's give the dude some more time. 00:07:33.25\00:07:35.58 They said, "Keep talking man." 00:07:35.62\00:07:37.89 Kept talking. 00:07:37.92\00:07:39.45 Within that same week, 00:07:39.49\00:07:41.36 my department head came running in my classroom. 00:07:41.39\00:07:43.83 He said, 00:07:43.86\00:07:45.19 "I was concerned because it's so quiet in here. 00:07:45.23\00:07:46.73 I thought something was wrong, because it's quiet." 00:07:46.76\00:07:48.63 It's quiet. 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.00 And he said, I thought you maybe 00:07:50.03\00:07:51.37 you were tied up in the corner. 00:07:51.40\00:07:53.34 But he says, you're really doing a good job here. 00:07:53.37\00:07:55.90 And the kids started to praise me 00:07:55.94\00:07:58.47 because of what I was doing. 00:07:58.51\00:08:00.01 And he said, 00:08:00.04\00:08:01.38 "This dude cares about us. 00:08:01.41\00:08:02.74 He's teaching us to be something." 00:08:02.78\00:08:04.11 Something. 00:08:04.15\00:08:05.48 Then it took off from me 00:08:05.51\00:08:06.85 then I was and I was a sub at the time. 00:08:06.88\00:08:08.22 They offered me a contract. 00:08:08.25\00:08:09.58 And I wound up in Mumford High School. 00:08:09.62\00:08:10.95 Mumford, another one. 00:08:10.99\00:08:14.69 Doctor Robert Onu was the principal at that time. 00:08:14.72\00:08:16.66 I remember Dr. Onu, yes. 00:08:16.69\00:08:19.23 But you know, I was impressed 00:08:19.26\00:08:20.60 when I got to Mumford for my interview. 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.90 When the bell rang, 00:08:22.93\00:08:24.60 the students were rushing to get to class. 00:08:24.63\00:08:27.70 You know, I went by the violins room, 00:08:27.74\00:08:31.24 you know, the music teacher was there with the choir. 00:08:31.27\00:08:34.08 And then they showed me my classroom. 00:08:34.11\00:08:35.44 Here again, they took me up to a room, 00:08:35.48\00:08:37.11 it looked like a warehouse. 00:08:37.15\00:08:38.48 They said, "Here's your room." 00:08:38.51\00:08:39.85 Oh, my goodness. 00:08:39.88\00:08:41.22 Desks had to be assembled. 00:08:41.25\00:08:42.58 The room needed to be painted. 00:08:42.62\00:08:43.95 It was a mess. 00:08:43.99\00:08:45.32 I said, "How am I going to teach architecture in here?" 00:08:45.35\00:08:46.69 He said, 00:08:46.72\00:08:48.06 "You know, you figure out something. 00:08:48.09\00:08:49.42 You're smart guy." 00:08:49.46\00:08:50.79 Oh, my. 00:08:50.83\00:08:52.16 So that was it? That was it. 00:08:52.19\00:08:53.53 So every day I assembled desks, 00:08:53.56\00:08:55.73 I stole paint 00:08:55.76\00:08:57.10 from another department in school, 00:08:57.13\00:08:58.47 I painted my classroom. 00:08:58.50\00:08:59.90 And the kids saw me open this ladder 00:08:59.93\00:09:01.34 during my lunch break. 00:09:01.37\00:09:02.70 And after school, they said, "Hey, why are you doing?" 00:09:02.74\00:09:04.37 I said, "This is for you. 00:09:04.41\00:09:05.91 This is for you. 00:09:05.94\00:09:07.28 This classroom's got to be special for you." 00:09:07.31\00:09:09.28 Some of them would come and help me. 00:09:09.31\00:09:10.75 And they will come and help you. 00:09:10.78\00:09:12.11 And I got that room painted. 00:09:12.15\00:09:13.48 And next thing you know, we're moving along. 00:09:13.52\00:09:16.08 And I got the inspiration from Dr. Harry Robinson III 00:09:16.12\00:09:21.76 from Harvard University. 00:09:21.79\00:09:23.49 I was gone to DC to visit some family. 00:09:23.53\00:09:26.73 And I want, I never been to Harvard. 00:09:26.76\00:09:29.00 And since I taught architecture, 00:09:29.03\00:09:30.40 I asked could I go to the school of architecture. 00:09:30.43\00:09:32.70 And I told him what I was trying to do 00:09:32.73\00:09:34.30 in Detroit. 00:09:34.34\00:09:35.67 And he said, 00:09:35.70\00:09:37.04 "You know, know what you're talking about is college level. 00:09:37.07\00:09:38.41 That's not high school stuff." 00:09:38.44\00:09:39.97 He said, "Let me help you." 00:09:40.01\00:09:41.51 And he started gave me some textbooks. 00:09:41.54\00:09:43.85 We interviewed for while, talked for a while. 00:09:43.88\00:09:45.78 He would have his graduate students at Harvard 00:09:45.81\00:09:47.52 send me information. 00:09:47.55\00:09:48.88 Oh, that's a blessing. 00:09:48.92\00:09:50.25 Because I had an Afrocentric approach 00:09:50.29\00:09:51.62 to the teaching of architecture. 00:09:51.65\00:09:52.99 Yes, yes. 00:09:53.02\00:09:54.36 Then in '97, I got the idea, the Lord gave me the idea. 00:09:54.39\00:09:58.39 Take these kids to Africa. 00:09:58.43\00:10:00.86 And I started raising funds. 00:10:00.90\00:10:02.30 I got a lot of support from different people, 00:10:02.33\00:10:05.13 all different walks of life. 00:10:05.17\00:10:07.10 And we actually were able to go over our spring break. 00:10:07.14\00:10:09.84 We were two and a half weeks. 00:10:09.87\00:10:11.51 We flew into Madrid, Spain. 00:10:11.54\00:10:14.54 We took a cruise ship 00:10:14.58\00:10:15.91 after we towards the lower Spain. 00:10:15.94\00:10:17.88 Yes, yes. 00:10:17.91\00:10:19.25 Southern Spain, cruise ship over to Morocco. 00:10:19.28\00:10:22.32 We met at the docks from a professor 00:10:22.35\00:10:24.32 from the University of Tangier. 00:10:24.35\00:10:26.29 And he took us through all of the Morocco 00:10:26.32\00:10:28.42 and study different things, was fascinating, 00:10:28.46\00:10:30.36 then we ended up in Portugal. 00:10:30.39\00:10:34.00 Because a lot of the sub-Saharians 00:10:34.03\00:10:36.46 from the University of Timbuktu. 00:10:36.50\00:10:38.83 You know, Timbuktu was the size of Michigan State University 00:10:38.87\00:10:42.14 back in the day, way back in the day. 00:10:42.17\00:10:44.77 And during the crusades 00:10:44.81\00:10:46.98 when the knights from the round, 00:10:47.01\00:10:49.04 you know, shouldn't say roundtable, 00:10:49.08\00:10:50.41 but the Catholics decided 00:10:50.45\00:10:52.25 they were going to convert the Africans, 00:10:52.28\00:10:54.52 okay, to Catholicism, 00:10:54.55\00:10:56.85 and Timbuktu had a university. 00:10:56.89\00:11:01.49 Military science was part of the... 00:11:01.52\00:11:03.43 And they came, they fought in the crusades. 00:11:03.46\00:11:05.66 Okay, turn the tide of the war. 00:11:05.69\00:11:08.70 And all this stuff was presented to the kids. 00:11:08.73\00:11:11.03 Yes, yes, yes. 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.40 From perspective of you have much to be to be proud of. 00:11:12.43\00:11:15.50 Your heritage is great. Yes. 00:11:15.54\00:11:17.41 And it was just a fascinating experience. 00:11:17.44\00:11:19.91 And we came back, we were rock stars all of us. 00:11:19.94\00:11:22.64 You know, the kids loved it the attention they got. 00:11:22.68\00:11:24.95 But the tears I saw in their eyes 00:11:24.98\00:11:27.95 while we were in Africa, 00:11:27.98\00:11:29.42 and they learned about their heritage 00:11:29.45\00:11:32.02 from people who were there, 00:11:32.05\00:11:33.39 people who look like them. 00:11:33.42\00:11:34.86 And people who didn't look like them. 00:11:34.89\00:11:36.22 Yes. 00:11:36.26\00:11:37.59 They were acknowledging what happened there. 00:11:37.63\00:11:39.13 It was a wonderful experience. 00:11:39.16\00:11:40.56 That's a blessing. 00:11:40.60\00:11:41.93 You know, and it just reinforced 00:11:41.96\00:11:43.53 what I felt like, yes, the Lord put me here. 00:11:43.57\00:11:46.17 This is what I need to do. 00:11:46.20\00:11:47.54 This is my mission field. 00:11:47.57\00:11:48.90 Going back to that conversation with Dr. Reeves. 00:11:48.94\00:11:51.27 And just seeing God work. 00:11:51.31\00:11:54.04 You are a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:11:54.08\00:11:56.24 born and raised? 00:11:56.28\00:11:57.61 Yes. 00:11:57.65\00:11:58.98 How did your faith come into play 00:11:59.01\00:12:03.35 and engage with the students? 00:12:03.39\00:12:05.12 Because you saw so much in the school system 00:12:05.15\00:12:09.32 and it wasn't comfortable. 00:12:09.36\00:12:10.69 No. 00:12:10.73\00:12:12.06 And how were you able to hold on to your faith 00:12:12.09\00:12:15.53 in all of that, 00:12:15.56\00:12:16.90 because we deal with stress, anxiety, 00:12:16.93\00:12:20.24 you see the depression, 00:12:20.27\00:12:21.60 children coming to school hungry, 00:12:21.64\00:12:23.71 holes in their shoes, 00:12:23.74\00:12:25.44 wearing the same clothes for four days. 00:12:25.47\00:12:28.38 Maybe you have an odor, 00:12:28.41\00:12:30.15 you know, don't have toothpaste and toothbrush. 00:12:30.18\00:12:33.42 So how did you allow your faith 00:12:33.45\00:12:36.79 to be an example for the Lord? 00:12:36.82\00:12:38.79 And how did you maintain your peace? 00:12:38.82\00:12:42.82 First thing, 00:12:42.86\00:12:44.66 I would run to work off my stress. 00:12:44.69\00:12:47.60 In the evenings, when I get off, I would jog. 00:12:47.63\00:12:50.93 You would jog. Help me keep my stress down. 00:12:50.97\00:12:52.43 All right. 00:12:52.47\00:12:53.80 Because if everything else is falling apart around me, 00:12:53.84\00:12:55.90 I have to keep myself together. 00:12:55.94\00:12:57.41 Yes.
