¤ ¤ 00:00:13.51\00:00:49.58 Hi, I'm Dr. Kim Logan-Nowlan and welcome to Live To Be Well. 00:00:49.61\00:00:53.75 What is Live To Be Well? Mind, body and soul but the most 00:00:53.78\00:00:58.95 important aspect, without God we cannot live to be well. Today I 00:00:58.99\00:01:04.23 am blessed to have on the program Mr. Robert Pearson MBA 00:01:04.26\00:01:09.16 Welcome to Live To Be Well. How are you Robert? 00:01:09.20\00:01:11.80 I'm well and yourself? 00:01:11.83\00:01:13.17 I'm well. I like that I'm well. You're well, I'm well. 00:01:13.20\00:01:16.24 Let's talk about integrity and ethics in business. Well first 00:01:16.27\00:01:21.04 of all what is an MBA? 00:01:21.08\00:01:22.41 It's a master's in business administration. It is a masters 00:01:22.44\00:01:26.92 degree typically provided by accredited universities and 00:01:26.95\00:01:30.15 colleges when people have demonstrated the ability and 00:01:30.19\00:01:34.86 knowledge and discipline in business and 00:01:34.89\00:01:38.06 business administration, 00:01:38.09\00:01:39.43 how to manage complex organizations, how to give with 00:01:39.46\00:01:43.63 business management, finance, logistics, accounting, things of 00:01:43.67\00:01:48.07 that nature. 00:01:48.10\00:01:49.44 Wow! You know speaking about one of my business classes I did not 00:01:49.47\00:01:53.51 like it. But it was helpful as I look back over it now, what 00:01:53.54\00:01:57.45 I'm doing now in business. Why is integrity so important in the 00:01:57.48\00:02:02.68 way we view business and who we are as business owners? 00:02:02.72\00:02:06.32 Integrity. 00:02:06.35\00:02:07.69 Well integrity's very important in business as well as in all 00:02:07.72\00:02:10.49 aspects of life. I feel that you're only as good as your word 00:02:10.53\00:02:13.90 of course. And that's really as far as the business owner's 00:02:13.93\00:02:17.57 concerned that's your credit, you know, how good your word is. 00:02:17.60\00:02:20.44 If you say you're going to do something you know on time and 00:02:20.47\00:02:23.24 on price, you have to be a person of high integrity or your 00:02:23.27\00:02:26.57 business has to be a business of integrity and deliver. If you 00:02:26.61\00:02:29.94 don't well that's going to affect your business negatively. 00:02:29.98\00:02:34.22 And that goes from small business owners all the way to 00:02:34.25\00:02:37.65 corporate organizations, you know, global conglomerates. 00:02:37.69\00:02:40.86 It comes down to the individual person's moral integrity, doing 00:02:40.89\00:02:45.99 what's right. Myself personally as a Christian, you know you 00:02:46.03\00:02:49.96 want to do things justly and with balance in accordance with 00:02:50.00\00:02:53.80 the word. Ah, you know, God doesn't like unjust measures. So 00:02:53.84\00:02:57.64 you don't want to deal with people unjustly, slightly. You 00:02:57.67\00:03:02.24 don't to gouge people from a biblical standpoint or a legal 00:03:02.28\00:03:07.52 standpoint because they will come back around on you. We all 00:03:07.55\00:03:10.49 reap what we sow. [Yes] So with that being said, you know, you 00:03:10.52\00:03:14.66 treat people well. They will return to you and they will 00:03:14.69\00:03:16.76 treat you well in return. 00:03:16.79\00:03:18.13 Was there any doubt or when did you realize that this was the 00:03:18.16\00:03:20.76 area that God was calling you to? Was it in college, high 00:03:20.80\00:03:24.20 school or when you were trying to declare a major? What was it 00:03:24.23\00:03:27.64 now that happened? 00:03:27.67\00:03:29.00 Um, for the most part, I've always wanted to be a business 00:03:29.04\00:03:32.31 person. I just like the idea of it. You know, maybe even 00:03:32.34\00:03:37.25 watching old movies and seeing people in suits and like you 00:03:37.28\00:03:40.08 know doing stuff and counting money. That just interests me. 00:03:40.12\00:03:44.42 You know, I don't want to be a doctor or a lawyer, et cetera, 00:03:44.45\00:03:47.66 but I just gravitated towards business. I went right to 00:03:47.69\00:03:50.53 business school. I graduated from Wayne State University 00:03:50.56\00:03:53.50 getting my BA in finance and also going back again to get my 00:03:53.53\00:03:57.43 MBA as well. So I just took all business classes I really 00:03:57.47\00:04:02.20 enjoyed facets of business administration, management, ah 00:04:02.24\00:04:07.68 accounting, finance. I enjoyed the analytical part of it, you 00:04:07.71\00:04:12.28 know, forecasting, budgeting. I just... I enjoyed it. 00:04:12.31\00:04:17.35 You know I'm looking at you like you know really! You talk the 00:04:17.39\00:04:21.42 financier. I went in my first accounting class. I only took 00:04:21.46\00:04:25.86 one, you know, I said one, and barely passed it because I just 00:04:25.89\00:04:30.87 wasn't interested in it. But I said let me take it and see if 00:04:30.90\00:04:33.94 that's something I want to do. I knew I wanted to go into 00:04:33.97\00:04:36.47 business. I didn't know how God was directing me. And then 00:04:36.50\00:04:40.01 finally I said, That's why we have other people like you and 00:04:40.04\00:04:42.31 other people to do things like that. So when you were growing 00:04:42.34\00:04:46.68 up other children outside, because you have height, did you 00:04:46.72\00:04:50.65 play basketball? Did you take time to get involved with that 00:04:50.69\00:04:53.96 in sports? 00:04:53.99\00:04:55.32 Oh no, I wasn't a great basketball player but I did play 00:04:55.36\00:04:58.33 football and I ran track in high school. Then after high school 00:04:58.36\00:05:02.40 just intramural stuff in college I enjoy sports, I enjoy watching 00:05:02.43\00:05:07.14 football as an adult now. 00:05:07.17\00:05:08.74 Robert, tell me, how important is finance and having 00:05:08.77\00:05:12.61 integrity to it? 00:05:12.64\00:05:14.48 It's very important especially in the field of finance because 00:05:14.51\00:05:18.48 you typically dealing with other people's money so you have to be 00:05:18.51\00:05:21.75 a good steward of their money. So you have to build trust. You 00:05:21.78\00:05:25.09 have to be a trustworthy person. You have to be a credit worthy 00:05:25.12\00:05:27.82 person. Um so integrity is very, very huge dealing with all 00:05:27.86\00:05:33.53 aspects of business but particularly in finance. 00:05:33.56\00:05:35.86 Come on. Your workplace, let's discuss it. No matter what your 00:05:35.90\00:05:40.74 occupation is you should be using integrity on the job. 00:05:40.77\00:05:44.71 If you work eight hours you should be paid for eight hours. 00:05:44.74\00:05:49.18 Don't sign in for 12 hours. Integrity let's talk about that. 00:05:49.21\00:05:53.01 Yeah, definitely you know you should only be paid what you're, 00:05:53.05\00:05:56.55 you know, for the time you put in and compensated for it. 00:05:56.58\00:05:59.05 That's just being fair. You know as an employer you know you 00:05:59.09\00:06:03.12 shouldn't look to hurt your employees because that's gonna 00:06:03.16\00:06:06.19 affect your business long term. Also vice versa. From an 00:06:06.23\00:06:10.97 employee's standpoint, it works both ways. You don't want to 00:06:11.00\00:06:14.70 steal from your company per se or steal time. You know, it's 00:06:14.74\00:06:18.31 one thing if you have a family emergency, et cetera, and get 00:06:18.34\00:06:21.68 permission to leave but you know taking two-hour lunches is not a 00:06:21.71\00:06:25.31 good thing either. Also, affect your... 00:06:25.35\00:06:26.82 That's integrity right there. 00:06:26.85\00:06:28.52 Yeah, that's integrity because I can't trust you to do what you 00:06:28.55\00:06:31.05 say you are gonna do. 00:06:31.09\00:06:32.42 So integrity, attitude, trust all work together. [Um hm] 00:06:32.45\00:06:36.89 People today in our society, we don't see those components in 00:06:36.93\00:06:42.70 the workplace. Why? 00:06:42.73\00:06:45.00 Um unfortunately it's just a cultural society issue. 00:06:45.03\00:06:50.14 Um my opinion, we tend to champion people with negative 00:06:50.17\00:06:55.14 character traits so we laud people who have you know 00:06:55.18\00:07:01.98 cheated their way to the top per se. And that becomes part of 00:07:02.02\00:07:07.06 the collective conscience in my opinion of how people kind of 00:07:07.09\00:07:10.99 look at things. Oh you know my favorite character did whatever 00:07:11.03\00:07:13.43 it took to get to where he or she's at so I'm gonna kind of do 00:07:13.46\00:07:17.33 that my way. So for example people who might be in a trusted 00:07:17.37\00:07:22.54 position in the organization or in the business over someone 00:07:22.57\00:07:25.84 else's assets they might skim from the top. You know creating 00:07:25.87\00:07:30.25 fake invoices or doing things that are not above board and 00:07:30.28\00:07:35.75 figure that they might be entitled to or I'm not getting 00:07:35.78\00:07:39.22 enough money or whatever for their personal reasons are it 00:07:39.25\00:07:41.72 compels them to do wrong and that's really prevalent in our 00:07:41.76\00:07:46.63 society today. And it's unfortunate. But the good thing 00:07:46.66\00:07:50.33 is just as many bad people there are good people. 00:07:50.37\00:07:53.37 There are good people. Let's talk about going back to 00:07:53.40\00:07:55.90 wellness, stress. I remember reading about a story about 00:07:55.94\00:07:59.17 a gentleman who had embezzlement embezzled millions of dollars 00:07:59.21\00:08:04.88 from many, many, many people. It impacted his whole family 00:08:04.91\00:08:08.85 where even his son committed suicide because he couldn't face 00:08:08.88\00:08:14.42 the economic community for what his father had done. So when I 00:08:14.46\00:08:21.76 think about going back to middle school, elementary school, high 00:08:21.80\00:08:26.13 school someone looking on your paper and saying You got the 00:08:26.17\00:08:29.40 answer, you got the answer? We don't think about that. Right 00:08:29.44\00:08:32.67 there, that's where it begins, that cheating off the top. I've 00:08:32.71\00:08:37.31 studied all week and you come in and want to cheat off my paper 00:08:37.35\00:08:41.68 and that's right there, integrity [Mm-hm] honesty. 00:08:41.72\00:08:46.02 self-worth and it begins that young and it continues all the 00:08:46.05\00:08:51.93 way through life developing those behavioral traits that now 00:08:51.96\00:08:56.30 you come into my office and you say Dr. Logan I've been arrested 00:08:56.33\00:09:01.37 Arrested for what? Ah embezzlement. Um I stole 00:09:01.40\00:09:06.54 materials that didn't belong to me and they are saying that 00:09:06.57\00:09:11.71 part of my probation is psychological counseling to 00:09:11.75\00:09:14.32 understand why this behavior happened. We're dealing with a 00:09:14.35\00:09:18.09 lot of stress. Can you imagine I'm looking over my shoulder FBI 00:09:18.12\00:09:23.29 police. All right. One day I'll tell a story, true story. I'm in 00:09:23.32\00:09:28.63 my office, Robert, and I'm seeing a client. There's a knock 00:09:28.66\00:09:32.97 at the door and I didn't hear the knock, but my administrator 00:09:33.00\00:09:37.94 rarely, she rarely interrupts my therapy session unless it's 00:09:37.97\00:09:40.51 emergency. She knocked on the door and she said 00:09:40.54\00:09:43.18 (mouths) police. I said, huh? She said police (out loud). 00:09:43.21\00:09:47.62 And right there my mind did not go anywhere, what'd I do, I 00:09:47.65\00:09:52.55 been doing something wrong. I told my patient could you excuse 00:09:52.59\00:09:56.39 me a minute. I went out, spoke to the two police officers. They 00:09:56.42\00:10:00.40 told me what they were there to do. They came to my office to 00:10:00.43\00:10:03.80 arrest somebody who they knew would be here but the person's 00:10:03.83\00:10:09.24 appointment wasn't for an hour later. But the fact of the 00:10:09.27\00:10:14.48 matter was I didn't get uncomfortable because I knew I 00:10:14.51\00:10:19.11 had not done anything wrong with you know my patient or sharing 00:10:19.15\00:10:23.18 information or come on in my office and read my files. No! 00:10:23.22\00:10:27.09 But they told me why they were there. I knew in advance because 00:10:27.12\00:10:32.36 the other party told me they were going to send the police 00:10:32.39\00:10:34.93 here. But they were hoping to arrest the person but that 00:10:34.96\00:10:38.53 person had to deal with that, turn themselves in because of 00:10:38.57\00:10:44.47 integrity. So it all goes back from a young child. You know, is 00:10:44.51\00:10:50.85 there anything wrong with hard work? 00:10:50.88\00:10:52.81 There's nothing wrong with it. I mean, even in the book of 00:10:52.85\00:10:56.72 Proverbs you know the diligent maketh rich, the diligent hand 00:10:56.75\00:11:01.09 maketh rich. So it's seed time and harvest. So those are 00:11:01.12\00:11:05.49 principles in the Bible and that's also translated to the 00:11:05.53\00:11:07.83 rest of the world. You're getting what you put in. 00:11:07.86\00:11:10.87 So if you put in negative things you get out negative things. 00:11:10.90\00:11:13.87 So it's unfortunate that people feel that way but you know no 00:11:13.90\00:11:20.64 good can come out of it because you know what you're question 00:11:20.68\00:11:23.14 regarding wellness. I think the Bible says the wages of sin is 00:11:23.18\00:11:27.75 death. So when you're doing fraudulent things, untrustworthy 00:11:27.78\00:11:31.12 things it will take a toll on you. Yeah your bank account 00:11:31.15\00:11:34.19 might go up but your health is going to go down. I heard 00:11:34.22\00:11:38.43 similar stories you know people getting hundreds of thousands, 00:11:38.46\00:11:41.66 millions of dollars but soon they catch cancer or maybe their 00:11:41.70\00:11:45.33 child dies an untimely death. Those things, you know, it all 00:11:45.37\00:11:52.54 comes around. 00:11:52.57\00:11:54.21 The Bible also says what does it profit a man to gain the whole 00:11:54.24\00:12:00.48 world (reciting together) and loose your own soul. We are in a 00:12:00.52\00:12:04.29 place where we're chasing that dollar, but yet our hearts are 00:12:04.32\00:12:08.56 not fixed on Christ and if we are faithful to God he's 00:12:08.59\00:12:12.63 faithful to us. And therefore my mind says I should not be on 00:12:12.66\00:12:18.20 stress I want to have good wellness in my life total 00:12:18.23\00:12:20.67 balance and I don't want to reap negativity because that's what I 00:12:20.70\00:12:25.11 put out. I don't want to have to look over my shoulder because 00:12:25.14\00:12:28.21 I've been stealing and I've been skimming off the top and hurting 00:12:28.24\00:12:32.48 people. Because God sees every thing and he knows and he 00:12:32.51\00:12:37.05 already knows what we're going to do and what we're not going 00:12:37.09\00:12:38.92 to do. And so we have to change the way we think, Robert, to 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.72 healthiness, have good wellness to reduce stress and anxiety. 00:12:42.76\00:12:47.80 People jumping off of buildings because of... Remember the stock 00:12:47.83\00:12:54.17 market crash, many, many, many years ago and people literally 00:12:54.20\00:12:58.87 jumped out of windows because they lost everything. But I 00:12:58.91\00:13:02.88 believe if we have confidence in our Savior, our Lord and 00:13:02.91\00:13:07.62 Savior Jesus Christ, and we stand by the principles of the 00:13:07.65\00:13:10.55 word of God and we listen to what the Holy Spirit speaks to 00:13:10.59\00:13:14.26 us and when those temptations come they just go right past us. 00:13:14.29\00:13:18.13 Because God says Trust in me. Seek my way. He said, Seek ye 00:13:18.16\00:13:24.87 first the kingdom of God. All right, you know I don't get up 00:13:24.90\00:13:29.77 in the morning and say, Oh let's see what the stock market is 00:13:29.80\00:13:32.14 saying today. I hit my knees or I stand or I'm praising God to 00:13:32.17\00:13:38.45 guide me throughout that day. I'm in my Word trying to 00:13:38.48\00:13:41.45 understand what do you have for me to say to Robert today. 00:13:41.48\00:13:44.12 What can I say to encourage someone today? So when we talk 00:13:44.15\00:13:48.29 about integrity and ethics what's the difference? 00:13:48.32\00:13:51.79 Okay I have integrity but I don't have ethics. I have ethics 00:13:51.83\00:13:54.66 but I don't have integrity. Who cares? What's the difference 00:13:54.70\00:13:57.17 Sure. You ethics is your belief system, if your good beliefs you 00:13:57.20\00:14:02.60 know or moral beliefs or immoral beliefs. Your integrity is your 00:14:02.64\00:14:06.84 trustworthiness and your credibility. So they 00:14:06.88\00:14:09.68 particularly go hand in hand with one another. You know, is 00:14:09.71\00:14:12.21 your belief system good? Your trustworthiness will be high. 00:14:12.25\00:14:17.05 You just said credibility too. I think about... you know I was 00:14:17.09\00:14:21.49 talking to my program director Jason Bradley of Dare to Dream 00:14:21.52\00:14:25.69 and he was saying to me that when people look at social media 00:14:25.73\00:14:29.60 it could cost you your job. Can you talk about that because 00:14:29.63\00:14:33.60 it's your integrity? 00:14:33.64\00:14:34.97 Sure. Exactly. Particularly in large organizations they do 00:14:35.00\00:14:38.94 investigate people with social media because during the 00:14:38.97\00:14:42.54 interview process you're presenting yourself one way but 00:14:42.58\00:14:44.91 they want to know how you truly are to the rest of the world. 00:14:44.95\00:14:47.88 So you know most large organizations do have people 00:14:47.92\00:14:51.69 investigate people's social media to see what's really going 00:14:51.72\00:14:55.92 on. Particularly if you're going to be in charge of something 00:14:55.96\00:14:59.86 very important. If you're going to be a steward over someone's 00:14:59.89\00:15:04.30 large assets, they want to know what kind of person you really 00:15:04.33\00:15:07.64 are, what kind of integrity do you truly have, what kind of 00:15:07.67\00:15:10.17 ethics do you have. So they will look at your social media. 00:15:10.21\00:15:13.34 So and that could or would cost you opportunities. 00:15:13.38\00:15:16.51 Yes I think about how people find me, you know, and I'm very 00:15:16.54\00:15:21.92 grateful, I'm humbled by the reviews people write and the 00:15:21.95\00:15:25.69 first thing people say they look at the accounts of my character 00:15:25.72\00:15:31.16 based on the reviews that people have written. And you 00:15:31.79\00:15:33.29 know what I say, I say praise the Lord and I thank the Lord 00:15:33.33\00:15:36.60 for my wonderful clients and patients. I love them, they love 00:15:36.63\00:15:39.97 me and I don't believe that... And they have it set up where 00:15:40.00\00:15:45.44 you cannot do that. You know of course you could create an email 00:15:45.47\00:15:49.34 but you don't create 50 emails and write and some do but I did 00:15:49.38\00:15:54.48 not do that. So all the reviews that's on the internet about me 00:15:54.52\00:15:59.02 other people wrote and I'm very grateful. Sometimes I go back 00:15:59.05\00:16:02.09 and I read them and integrity counts and character and also 00:16:02.12\00:16:08.76 being honest of who you are. Honesty. Why is it important 00:16:08.80\00:16:13.60 that we are honest people? 00:16:14.07\00:16:15.40 Well to be honest well as believers, we should be honest. 00:16:15.44\00:16:20.91 And all people should be honest. You want to deal with honest, 00:16:20.94\00:16:25.21 trustworthy people. So it's very important to be honest in all 00:16:25.25\00:16:30.19 aspects because it transcends all aspects of life. So you know 00:16:30.22\00:16:34.62 if you're dishonest you can't be dishonest in business and then 00:16:34.66\00:16:38.19 expect your children to be honest with you. So they will 00:16:38.23\00:16:41.66 just pick up on what you're doing and they'll incorporate 00:16:41.70\00:16:44.07 that in their own personal lives. So it's all relevant. 00:16:44.10\00:16:48.44 And it cycles because think about when children tell little 00:16:48.47\00:16:53.04 stories and sometimes people say oh that's so cute. No, that is 00:16:53.07\00:16:56.38 not cute. I remember my mom, she was standing right there 00:16:56.41\00:17:00.48 but I did not see her. She was on the outside glass of my 00:17:00.52\00:17:04.95 grandmother's home. And I saw my mom's purse and I looked, but I 00:17:04.99\00:17:09.89 never looked out past the couch and I went in her purse and I 00:17:09.92\00:17:14.00 took a quarter, a quarter. My mother came in and she saw me. 00:17:14.03\00:17:18.73 She said, Did you go in my purse? And I said, No ma'am. 00:17:18.77\00:17:23.00 Lie number one. Did you take anything out of my purse? 00:17:23.04\00:17:26.44 No ma'am. Lie number two. Number three, did you take money 00:17:26.47\00:17:32.15 out of my purse? Mm-mm. My! I couldn't sit for three days. 00:17:32.18\00:17:37.12 She said, You cannot lie. Now all right. People who are 00:17:37.15\00:17:44.49 sinners saved by grace. People lie, they fabricate the truth. 00:17:44.53\00:17:47.90 They embellish the truth but only God can help us stop that 00:17:47.93\00:17:54.40 negative behavior because lying and being dishonest can cost you 00:17:54.44\00:18:00.18 your life also. It can put you in a place... That's why today 00:18:00.21\00:18:04.88 our prison system is overcrowded for various reasons but it 00:18:04.91\00:18:09.85 started with negative behavior. That should have been stopped 00:18:09.88\00:18:14.79 long before they got into their teenage years and older. 00:18:14.82\00:18:19.53 But someone ignored it or well it's okay. Should we just say 00:18:19.56\00:18:24.47 it's okay or should we say to our children, This is wrong. 00:18:24.50\00:18:29.60 Yeah, you should say to your children yes this is wrong 00:18:29.64\00:18:33.27 because it starts at an early age. Children tend to develop 00:18:33.31\00:18:37.01 their personalities around age five. So like you mentioned, 00:18:37.05\00:18:40.35 these little white lies, you know, a lot of people laugh it 00:18:40.38\00:18:43.02 off and it's cute, but what happens is they get positive 00:18:43.05\00:18:45.95 reinforcement from that so they'll continue to do it on a 00:18:45.99\00:18:48.92 grander scale as they go through life. I had a very similar 00:18:48.96\00:18:51.59 scenario with my own children. My oldest, I asked her to do 00:18:51.63\00:18:56.80 something and I followed up with her, Did you do it? And of 00:18:56.83\00:19:00.10 course she said yes, but when I went back to check on it, it 00:19:00.14\00:19:02.50 hadn't been done. And I asked her, Why did you tell me a lie? 00:19:02.54\00:19:07.38 And you know she couldn't give me a true response but she kind 00:19:07.41\00:19:12.81 of just blushed. I said, you know, lying is wrong and it's 00:19:12.85\00:19:16.42 not good and given our belief system, you know, we say Jesus 00:19:16.45\00:19:20.66 isn't like that you know on the young person's scale. So I want 00:19:20.69\00:19:25.19 to give them good ethics and good belief system so I tell 00:19:25.23\00:19:29.63 them lying is wrong. I had to start early and give them 00:19:29.66\00:19:33.37 negative reinforcement when they do that versus positive 00:19:33.40\00:19:35.97 reinforcement because it just will become a part of them. 00:19:36.00\00:19:39.87 So then after you matriculate in life and you become an adult 00:19:39.91\00:19:45.38 you're getting away with lying and cheating for so long. Here I 00:19:45.41\00:19:48.12 am in the business sense and I'm dealing with whatever scenario 00:19:48.15\00:19:51.65 and I'm going to lie and cheat [Right] to get over. 00:19:51.69\00:19:54.26 No one ever stopped me and therefore the behavior just 00:19:54.29\00:19:57.59 continued to build like those building blocks and then it 00:19:57.63\00:20:00.83 comes in like a domino effect. 00:20:00.86\00:20:02.20 Right and it affects your integrity. 00:20:02.23\00:20:03.67 And your integrity... And then once you've been arrested and 00:20:03.70\00:20:07.87 dealing with finances and other areas, you can't work in that 00:20:07.90\00:20:12.21 field anymore. 00:20:12.24\00:20:13.58 No because now you're untrustworthy. 00:20:13.61\00:20:14.94 Right. If you have a felony, you've been an attorney, you 00:20:14.98\00:20:18.11 cannot practice law. 00:20:18.15\00:20:19.48 You'll be disbarred. 00:20:19.51\00:20:20.85 You're disbarred. That's your integrity. So... 00:20:20.88\00:20:23.05 Same thing in the medical profession as well. 00:20:23.08\00:20:24.85 Medical profession as well. I could lose my license for doing 00:20:24.89\00:20:29.29 something that is not ethical or it's the integrity behind it. 00:20:29.32\00:20:34.30 I remember we were being... You know Arthur. And they came 00:20:34.33\00:20:40.27 in to meet with me, the Internal Revenue Service and an insurance 00:20:40.30\00:20:45.01 company was helping us set up things. I'd just gone 00:20:45.04\00:20:47.18 through a fire 00:20:47.21\00:20:48.54 and they were meeting with my administrator, Ms. Anderson and 00:20:48.58\00:20:51.61 I and walking through things. And I said, Well this lady said 00:20:51.65\00:20:57.32 that I did not do the work. So I got a letter from an insurance 00:20:57.35\00:21:03.02 company. So the insurance company called and said, 00:21:03.06\00:21:05.09 Dr. Logan, you have no record of any problems with your integrity 00:21:05.13\00:21:10.53 I said but she was in the therapy session. I was talking 00:21:10.57\00:21:14.10 to her son, he could not... well he had difficulty speaking so 00:21:14.14\00:21:18.74 she would answer the questions. So I billed her for the hour, 00:21:18.77\00:21:24.15 billed him because they both were in the session. She said, 00:21:24.18\00:21:27.28 How dare you bill me? That's fraud. So when the insurance 00:21:27.32\00:21:30.92 company called they said, Dr. Logan, send back the money and 00:21:30.95\00:21:36.29 we close this out. We know she was in the session, she knew she 00:21:36.32\00:21:40.60 was in the session but she said it was for my son. But how could 00:21:40.63\00:21:44.33 he answer the questions if you didn't answer, he couldn't speak 00:21:44.37\00:21:47.04 well. And so I sent it back. A month later she said, I'm going 00:21:47.07\00:21:51.97 to find someone else to service my son. And I said you have that 00:21:52.01\00:21:56.61 right. And I didn't say anything I said thank you for the 00:21:56.64\00:22:00.98 opportunity to serve you. A month later she called and said 00:22:01.02\00:22:05.45 I need your help. My son will not respond to anyone but you. 00:22:05.49\00:22:10.59 And I had to say I'm sorry, I have no openings until about 00:22:10.63\00:22:15.93 another six months. I was backed up. So she said I want to 00:22:15.96\00:22:21.64 apologize how I treated you and I want to send you back the 00:22:21.67\00:22:25.67 money that you sent back. I said No, no, no, no, no, we're good. 00:22:25.71\00:22:29.81 And I'll let you know if I can ever see your son. Sweet young 00:22:29.84\00:22:32.88 man. So I knew that I had not done anything. So the other 00:22:32.91\00:22:39.09 company said what they do, they go after people who bill 00:22:39.12\00:22:44.49 millions and millions of dollars and they're not seeing these 00:22:44.53\00:22:49.26 patients. Their integrity is not in place. So I think I owed 00:22:49.30\00:22:53.10 86 cents and I was like thank you Jesus. But the man said 00:22:53.13\00:22:58.84 Write me a check for 86 cents. So that was ethics and integrity 00:22:58.87\00:23:02.98 You know you are a private practice, small business, but 00:23:03.01\00:23:08.22 they are big people out here who are stealing and it's impacting 00:23:08.25\00:23:13.69 the church, it's impacting hospitals, businesses and then 00:23:13.72\00:23:18.79 our taxes go up. Then things go up for us because they got to 00:23:18.83\00:23:23.73 make this money up somehow, some way. Am I correct? 00:23:23.77\00:23:26.00 Correct. No, it's the people with low integrity and people 00:23:26.03\00:23:30.54 who steal and do these fraudulent activities. 00:23:30.57\00:23:33.68 Unfortunately the good people pay for it and that's in all 00:23:33.71\00:23:37.05 aspects from insurance to health services to even consumer 00:23:37.08\00:23:41.78 products and services. Because when someone steals from the 00:23:41.82\00:23:45.05 store the store, or the company that runs the store are going to 00:23:45.09\00:23:49.02 pass that loss on to the consumer. They're going to raise 00:23:49.06\00:23:51.63 the price up on each consumer item. You know, we all pay for 00:23:51.66\00:23:56.50 someone else's misdeeds and that person is going to pay a 00:23:56.53\00:24:00.30 different way. But, yeah, it all comes around full circle how we 00:24:00.34\00:24:07.84 treat others in business and how we treat others in our personal 00:24:07.88\00:24:11.25 lives. It all comes around full circle. That example you just 00:24:11.28\00:24:15.28 mentioned. The woman offered you an apology and unfortunately she 00:24:15.32\00:24:20.26 was at a loss because of her misguided ways. 00:24:20.29\00:24:24.86 And I truly did not have an opening for six months. But I 00:24:24.89\00:24:28.60 would not have lied. Because that's the whole point, you know 00:24:28.63\00:24:31.63 I'm going to... See because her son was in so much need. But the 00:24:31.67\00:24:40.61 other part of it was that really stressed me. I was hurt by it 00:24:40.64\00:24:45.28 my reputation. It only takes one person to ruin your 00:24:45.31\00:24:50.15 reputation. [Damage your high integrity.] 00:24:50.19\00:24:51.52 Yes I have high integrity but I was under a lot of stress and 00:24:51.55\00:24:54.39 they came through that door to meet with me and all I had to do 00:24:54.42\00:24:59.53 and I said, Fine I'll just send it back. Even if a person wrote 00:24:59.56\00:25:03.67 one review about me. And I tried to explain to them. So the 00:25:03.70\00:25:08.70 person asked me to lie when I went to court. I said, I can't 00:25:08.74\00:25:11.61 do that, that's perjury and I'm not going to go to jail for you. 00:25:11.64\00:25:16.41 So the person said, Well fine, I'm going to write this review 00:25:16.44\00:25:19.51 about you and no one's going to do business with you. 00:25:19.55\00:25:22.62 But greater is He that's in me than he that's in the world. 00:25:22.65\00:25:25.25 I am, that I am has sent you all right. So my god said you do 00:25:25.29\00:25:30.56 what is right and I will cover you in every aspect. And that's 00:25:30.59\00:25:34.66 the key, we have to have a connection to the Lord. We have 00:25:34.70\00:25:39.43 to implement prayer in the studying of the word of God so 00:25:39.47\00:25:43.41 that we will not make those kind of mistakes. And I never stole 00:25:43.44\00:25:48.21 another quarter from my mom. You know. Now when my husband 00:25:48.24\00:25:51.71 was alive he would put all his change on the dresser, all right 00:25:51.75\00:25:55.45 and he never counted it, and his dollars from golf. So I would 00:25:55.48\00:25:59.79 tell my little girl. Come here, come here. I said, Let's get all 00:25:59.82\00:26:03.09 daddy's coins. So he would get up the next morning, Hey 00:26:03.12\00:26:05.96 what happened to all my change? I said, I put it up to protect 00:26:05.99\00:26:09.30 you, all right. And do you know, we had jars here, here, here 00:26:09.33\00:26:14.54 and it was a blessing. Listen you have been amazing. I really 00:26:14.57\00:26:19.57 appreciate what I've learned today about integrity and also 00:26:19.61\00:26:24.25 ethics. Last 20 seconds, tell us what we need to do to be 00:26:24.28\00:26:28.02 better people. 00:26:28.05\00:26:30.22 Well, keep God first in your life. Treat others as you want 00:26:30.25\00:26:33.56 to be treated Always think about the greater scheme of things 00:26:33.59\00:26:38.76 and how it will affect you when you're presented with a negative 00:26:38.79\00:26:42.16 situation. Pray. Surround yourself with people of 00:26:42.20\00:26:49.10 good integrity. 00:26:49.14\00:26:50.47 I think that's so important Robert. I know you and you know 00:26:50.51\00:26:55.08 me. See it has to work both ways because I may want to be your 00:26:55.11\00:26:58.05 friend but you may say well Dr. Kim you're not someone I 00:26:58.08\00:27:01.05 want in my circles. Be very mindful who you associate with 00:27:01.08\00:27:05.72 because "guilty by association." You could be attached to a crime 00:27:05.75\00:27:09.99 because you were in that car. Your integrity... The Bible says 00:27:10.03\00:27:14.43 your reputation is far above rubies and gold. I want to thank 00:27:14.46\00:27:18.47 you so much for being with us today on Live To Be Well. And 00:27:18.50\00:27:21.90 remember without having God there is no aspect of 00:27:21.94\00:27:27.28 understanding what Live To Be Well is all about because he 00:27:27.31\00:27:30.05 he brings us all together. Have integrity, have ethics, have you 00:27:30.08\00:27:36.15 know the aspect of how you treat others. You reap 00:27:36.18\00:27:41.09 what you sow. Ask, don't take something that doesn't belong to 00:27:41.12\00:27:45.09 you. And remember, that God is willing, am I right Robert? to 00:27:45.13\00:27:49.83 bless you abundantly. I'm Dr. Kim Logan-Nowlan. 00:27:49.86\00:27:53.27 Ethics and integrity. With God you're on the right track. 00:27:53.30\00:27:57.74 Live To Be Well. 00:27:57.77\00:27:59.41 ¤ ¤ 00:27:59.44\00:28:28.54
