Hi, I'm Dr. Kim, and welcome to Live to be Well. 00:00:35.60\00:00:40.34 Have you ever said to yourselves, "I have regrets. 00:00:40.37\00:00:44.34 Why did my life take back turn? 00:00:44.37\00:00:47.54 Why did I have to go through that? 00:00:47.58\00:00:50.11 Why? Why? Why?" 00:00:50.15\00:00:51.81 Well, my special guest today has no regrets. 00:00:51.85\00:00:55.28 Welcome, Principal Larry Key, how are you today? 00:00:55.32\00:00:59.22 I'm doing fine, thank you. 00:00:59.25\00:01:00.82 All right, I got to get some out of the way 00:01:00.86\00:01:02.49 before we go any further, all right? 00:01:02.52\00:01:04.36 All right. Let's go back to 1975. 00:01:04.39\00:01:08.20 Can we do that? Okay. 00:01:08.23\00:01:09.76 All right, we're on our way to Huntsville, Alabama, 00:01:09.80\00:01:13.74 on the greyhound bus. 00:01:13.77\00:01:15.54 Now we have a history. 00:01:15.57\00:01:17.27 We were raised in the same church. 00:01:17.31\00:01:19.57 I was born and raised there. 00:01:19.61\00:01:21.14 You came when you were 17? Yes. 00:01:21.18\00:01:23.81 Around early... yeah, later teens. 00:01:23.85\00:01:26.41 Marshal T. Kelly was our pastor. 00:01:26.45\00:01:28.15 Yes. 00:01:28.18\00:01:29.52 And so here you come and some of the other brethren 00:01:29.55\00:01:33.86 and I am like, "Okay, who is this?" 00:01:33.89\00:01:35.36 You know, and so, but we connected. 00:01:35.39\00:01:38.26 I had afro. Yeah, you had, woo, the afro. 00:01:38.29\00:01:40.80 Michael Jackson big. Yes, you did, you did, you did. 00:01:40.83\00:01:42.66 The silvers. You did. 00:01:42.70\00:01:44.13 You had all that. Yes you did. You're good looking brother. 00:01:44.17\00:01:46.50 Still, you know, you got it, you got it. 00:01:46.53\00:01:48.70 But we decided to go to Oakwood. 00:01:48.74\00:01:51.41 Yes. You know, no money but faith. 00:01:51.44\00:01:54.14 You and I had all the faith in the world. 00:01:54.18\00:01:55.51 Oakwood College. Oakwood College. 00:01:55.54\00:01:57.01 That's only way I know it, Oakwood college. 00:01:57.05\00:01:59.38 So we're on the greyhound bus 00:01:59.41\00:02:00.88 and we get to Nashville, Tennessee. 00:02:00.92\00:02:02.58 Oh my! Oh my! 00:02:02.62\00:02:04.89 And so we get there to change buses 00:02:04.92\00:02:06.96 to the trail bus line, right? 00:02:06.99\00:02:08.66 That's right. So... 00:02:08.69\00:02:10.26 'cause greyhound didn't go to Huntsville. 00:02:10.29\00:02:12.13 It didn't go to Huntsville. 00:02:12.16\00:02:13.50 So we had to, you know, you know, go. 00:02:13.53\00:02:15.33 All right, so we're in the bus station 00:02:15.36\00:02:17.30 and police officers... 00:02:17.33\00:02:18.70 I'm going to tell my version, all right? 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.24 You can tell your version. 00:02:20.27\00:02:21.90 And so the police officer came over to me 00:02:21.94\00:02:24.54 and he just started bothering me. 00:02:24.57\00:02:27.61 And I was like, "You don't know who I am and where I'm from." 00:02:27.64\00:02:32.01 You know, and but, you then said, you know, 00:02:32.05\00:02:36.45 "Please, my sister didn't have her medication today." 00:02:36.48\00:02:39.89 You told the police officer that I'm mentally ill. 00:02:39.92\00:02:43.12 That is correct. 00:02:43.16\00:02:44.49 And that kept me from going to jail. 00:02:44.53\00:02:46.29 I was on a mission to make it to Oakwood. 00:02:46.33\00:02:50.03 And so you... By any means necessary. 00:02:50.07\00:02:51.73 But you know what, you know what, 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.17 I just don't understand why you'd have to tell him 00:02:53.20\00:02:54.84 I didn't have my medication that day. 00:02:54.87\00:02:56.47 Because if I didn't, you would be in prison, 00:02:56.50\00:02:58.47 maybe still, right now, today. 00:02:58.51\00:02:59.84 Right, yeah. 00:02:59.87\00:03:01.21 So the police let me go and you said, 00:03:01.24\00:03:04.05 "Kim, just be quiet. 00:03:04.08\00:03:05.41 Don't say nothing else. We're going to school." 00:03:05.45\00:03:07.88 You know, so we got there and I think you, kind of, 00:03:07.92\00:03:11.49 you know, stopped acquainting yourself 00:03:11.52\00:03:13.19 with me after that, you know. 00:03:13.22\00:03:15.89 So I've prayed the lord that you kept me out of jail, 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.59 you know, and my life would've taken 00:03:18.63\00:03:20.60 another turn, all right? 00:03:20.63\00:03:21.96 All right. 00:03:22.00\00:03:23.33 But I just want to thank you for coming over. 00:03:23.37\00:03:24.70 We've been friends a long time. 00:03:24.73\00:03:26.13 And I've seen God do miracles in your life. 00:03:26.17\00:03:29.40 So let's talk about, you know, us going to Oakwood, you know, 00:03:29.44\00:03:32.71 let's start a humble beginning Detroit, Michigan. 00:03:32.74\00:03:34.68 All right? 00:03:34.71\00:03:36.04 Well, actually we really started 00:03:36.08\00:03:37.48 at Wayne County Community. 00:03:37.51\00:03:38.85 That's where we started. Mr. Boon. 00:03:38.88\00:03:40.95 Mr. Boon's class. The English teacher. 00:03:40.98\00:03:42.95 Yes, oh, my goodness! 00:03:42.98\00:03:44.65 Very difficult teacher, but we made it through. 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.35 Yes. We made it through. 00:03:46.39\00:03:48.36 We had English class together. Right. 00:03:48.39\00:03:50.96 You are right, take me back. 00:03:50.99\00:03:52.33 And then we transferred those credits to Oakwood. 00:03:52.36\00:03:53.70 To Oakwood. Yes we did. 00:03:53.73\00:03:55.16 We went to Oakwood as advanced freshman. 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.17 Yes we did. 00:03:57.20\00:03:58.53 You know, come on, advanced freshman. 00:03:58.57\00:03:59.90 That's right, advanced. I'm sorry. 00:07:14.36\00:07:15.70 I was the Bible teacher chaplain. 00:07:15.73\00:07:17.07 Okay. 00:07:17.10\00:07:18.43 And I taught history as well. Okay. 00:07:18.47\00:07:20.20 I taught there for four years. Okay. 00:07:20.24\00:07:22.20 And then I got a call 00:07:22.24\00:07:23.91 to the Southwest Seventh-day Adventist conference. 00:07:23.94\00:07:27.58 And I was the principal in a small school 00:07:27.61\00:07:30.91 in Alexandra, Louisiana. 00:07:30.95\00:07:33.15 I remember when you were there. 00:07:33.18\00:07:34.52 And, matter of fact, that's where 00:07:34.55\00:07:35.88 my youngest child, Micah, she was born in Louisiana. 00:07:35.92\00:07:37.89 Okay. 00:07:37.92\00:07:39.25 And then I left there 00:07:39.29\00:07:40.62 and I went to Nashville, Tennessee. 00:07:40.66\00:07:41.99 I remember that. Taught at F.H. Jenkins. 00:07:42.02\00:07:45.06 The same school that Mark Keble went to. 00:07:45.09\00:07:47.56 Is that the same school? In elementary. 00:07:47.60\00:07:49.13 All right. I've taken sixth. 00:07:49.16\00:07:50.87 And then there was a special program. 00:07:50.90\00:07:54.04 They were looking for African-American man 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.81 to go into elementary school 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.31 in the public school system in Nashville, Tennessee. 00:07:59.34\00:08:02.21 And they were offering to pay all of your tuition and books, 00:08:02.24\00:08:05.38 just to become state certified in elementary. 00:08:05.41\00:08:08.88 So I took advantage of that program. 00:08:08.92\00:08:11.99 And from there for the last 20 years, 00:08:12.02\00:08:14.92 I taught in public school. 00:08:14.96\00:08:17.19 And then... And then... 00:08:17.23\00:08:19.29 And then now no regrets. 00:08:19.33\00:08:21.66 No regrets. No regrets. 00:08:21.70\00:08:23.43 I had a Jonah experience. 00:08:23.47\00:08:26.43 Meaning... 00:08:26.47\00:08:28.27 matter of fact, it was your sister 00:08:28.30\00:08:29.74 the superintendent of Lake Region Conference. 00:08:29.77\00:08:32.34 They caught me and asked me if I was interested 00:08:32.37\00:08:36.04 in being the principal at Peterson-Warren Academy. 00:08:36.08\00:08:39.58 And I turned the personnel committee down twice. 00:08:39.61\00:08:45.05 You turned them down twice? Turned them down twice. 00:08:45.09\00:08:47.79 And after the second time, I turned them down. 00:08:47.82\00:08:51.19 I had a Jonah experience. 00:08:51.23\00:08:52.63 What I mean is for three days and three nights, 00:08:52.66\00:08:56.16 I could barely eat or barely sleep. 00:08:56.20\00:08:59.10 And I was tossing and turning. 00:08:59.13\00:09:00.77 I said, "Lord, you want me to do what? 00:09:00.80\00:09:03.00 You want me to go to Peterson-Warren Academy, 00:09:03.04\00:09:06.37 you want me to come out of public school, 00:09:06.41\00:09:09.21 you want me to end my retirement early, 00:09:09.24\00:09:12.55 take an early retirement and go and teach 00:09:12.58\00:09:15.92 in Adventist Christian school and make less money?" 00:09:15.95\00:09:21.29 And I said, "Lord, you really want me to do this?" 00:09:21.32\00:09:24.69 And so from past experiences in my life, 00:09:24.73\00:09:28.06 I knew it was a calling that God wanted me 00:09:28.10\00:09:30.97 at Peterson-Warren Academy for such a time as this. 00:09:31.00\00:09:35.94 After the first two times I turned down 00:09:35.97\00:09:38.91 the personal committee, then I began to get phone calls 00:09:38.94\00:09:42.88 from friends of mine from across the country, 00:09:42.91\00:09:46.61 pastoral friends, individuals 00:09:46.65\00:09:48.52 who've known me for many, many years. 00:09:48.55\00:09:51.09 And they began to pray with me, counsel with me, 00:09:51.12\00:09:53.96 give me advice, and then... 00:09:53.99\00:09:57.19 So after that in those three days 00:09:57.23\00:09:59.93 of not being able to sleep, getting some counsel, 00:09:59.96\00:10:03.10 praying with individuals, I went by the school. 00:10:03.13\00:10:07.57 And I just happen to be in the area. 00:10:07.60\00:10:09.90 So I said let me drive by the school. 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.07 So I looked in the parking lot and there were two cars. 00:10:12.11\00:10:15.41 I didn't know who the cars belonged to. 00:10:15.44\00:10:18.88 And so I picked up my mobile device 00:10:18.91\00:10:21.72 and I called the office, and I said... 00:10:21.75\00:10:25.15 A friend of mine answered the phone, 00:10:25.19\00:10:27.56 Angeline Crawford, and I said, 00:10:27.59\00:10:29.86 "Miss Crawford, are they still looking 00:10:29.89\00:10:32.06 for a principal at Peterson-Warren Academy?" 00:10:32.09\00:10:34.50 and she said with the saddest voice, 00:10:34.53\00:10:37.10 "Yes, Larry, we're still praying for a principal." 00:10:37.13\00:10:40.70 I said, "Okay, then, well, I'll talk to you later." 00:10:40.74\00:10:44.91 And there I hung up the phone. 00:10:44.94\00:10:47.11 And right there in the parking lot 00:10:47.14\00:10:48.54 I heard the voice 00:10:48.58\00:10:49.91 just as clear as I'm speaking to you right now. 00:10:49.94\00:10:52.65 "Now take the job." 00:10:52.68\00:10:54.82 And I immediately was at peace with myself 00:10:54.85\00:10:59.22 and I knew that God wanted me to go to Peterson at that time. 00:10:59.25\00:11:02.92 And so I called up the superintendent 00:11:02.96\00:11:05.76 and called the president and I told the president, 00:11:05.79\00:11:08.90 Dr. Jones, of the Lake Region Conference. 00:11:08.93\00:11:11.30 I said, "If the position is still available, 00:11:11.33\00:11:13.77 I will take it and I guarantee you, 00:11:13.80\00:11:15.47 I will not turn it down or back out again." 00:11:15.50\00:11:18.67 And so they prayed about in the personnel committee, 00:11:18.71\00:11:22.11 they interviewed me, 00:11:22.14\00:11:24.05 and they want to know what change of mine... 00:11:24.08\00:11:29.25 I said, "Well, I didn't want be 00:11:29.28\00:11:31.39 the principal of Peterson Academy 00:11:31.42\00:11:33.39 because other individuals wanted me to 00:11:33.42\00:11:35.86 or because I wanted to, I want to make sure 00:11:35.89\00:11:38.19 that God wanted me 00:11:38.23\00:11:40.03 to be the Principal of Peterson-Warren Academy. 00:11:40.06\00:11:43.00 So the money was not an issue. 00:11:43.03\00:11:45.90 The leaving early retirement with the State of Michigan 00:11:45.93\00:11:50.51 was not an issue. 00:11:50.54\00:11:52.24 I prayed and talked with my family members, 00:11:52.27\00:11:54.41 my wife, and after that, 00:11:54.44\00:11:57.95 the conviction and the voice, it was clear. 00:11:57.98\00:12:00.98 And I have no regrets. 00:12:01.02\00:12:02.58 I am so glad that I left public school 00:12:02.62\00:12:05.19 and came back to Christian Seventh-day Adventist School, 00:12:05.22\00:12:10.03 and I love it, I love it. 00:12:10.06\00:12:12.29 My goodness. I'm at peace with myself. 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.53 I enjoy it. 00:12:14.56\00:12:15.90 You know, knowing you for so many... 00:12:15.93\00:12:18.17 Since you were teenagers and knowing your journey 00:12:18.20\00:12:21.60 'cause some of our journeys intertwined. 00:12:21.64\00:12:24.01 So many times. I have to hear this. 00:12:24.04\00:12:25.37 So many times. 00:12:25.41\00:12:26.74 And you came to see Arthur in hospital. 00:12:26.78\00:12:29.61 You're saying, "There shall be peace in the valley." 00:12:29.64\00:12:32.65 And he was so moved by it. 00:12:32.68\00:12:34.15 And when you called to see if you could come, I said, 00:12:34.18\00:12:37.12 "Of course," 'cause he loved you 00:12:37.15\00:12:38.49 and you loved him. 00:12:38.52\00:12:39.95 And to hear this story and not knowing 00:12:39.99\00:12:45.83 what you went through to accept the position, 00:12:45.86\00:12:50.63 I'm just, you know, 00:12:50.67\00:12:52.00 I don't get speechless too often 00:12:52.03\00:12:53.37 but I'm really touched because it's humbling. 00:12:53.40\00:12:56.40 And... 00:12:56.44\00:12:57.77 Of course, some of my friends thought I was crazy... 00:12:57.81\00:12:59.57 Of course, they will. 00:12:59.61\00:13:00.94 To leave the money, to leave the big job and pay. 00:13:00.98\00:13:02.61 It's not all about money all the time. 00:13:02.64\00:13:04.51 It's about serving the Lord. Exactly. 00:13:04.55\00:13:07.55 And we're living in the last days 00:13:07.58\00:13:08.92 of earth's history. 00:13:08.95\00:13:10.29 And we are. 00:13:10.32\00:13:11.65 Let's talk about the Revelation seminar. 00:13:11.69\00:13:13.52 You gave... 00:13:13.56\00:13:14.89 I'm going to back to Christian 'cause I'm going to ask 00:13:14.92\00:13:17.49 what is the difference between... 00:13:17.53\00:13:18.86 Let's do that first, the difference between 00:13:18.89\00:13:21.16 Christian education 00:13:21.20\00:13:22.53 and Seventh-day Adventist education, 00:13:22.56\00:13:25.17 what is the difference? 00:13:25.20\00:13:26.53 It's a big difference. 00:13:26.57\00:13:27.90 Number one, Seventh-day Adventist Christian education 00:13:27.94\00:13:31.81 has been around for many, many years. 00:13:31.84\00:13:35.28 God showed through his prophet Ellen G White 00:13:35.31\00:13:39.05 about Christian education. 00:13:39.08\00:13:40.68 We are the largest Protestant church school 00:13:40.72\00:13:44.59 Christian education system in the entire world. 00:13:44.62\00:13:47.76 And we're not there by chance. That's right. 00:13:47.79\00:13:52.09 And we have schools, colleges, universities 00:13:52.13\00:13:55.13 all over the world. 00:13:55.16\00:13:56.90 And the big difference between public education... 00:13:56.93\00:14:00.74 I've been in both arenas. 00:14:00.77\00:14:02.74 The difference is, number one, that God is there. 00:14:02.77\00:14:05.77 That's right. 00:14:05.81\00:14:07.14 The Holy Spirit, angels, students able to pray. 00:14:07.18\00:14:10.71 Pray in the classroom. 00:14:10.75\00:14:12.08 Teachers are able to pray and talk about God. 00:14:12.11\00:14:13.45 Yeah. 00:14:13.48\00:14:14.82 Now I tell you, even though 00:14:14.85\00:14:17.25 I was just kind of a secret agent 00:14:17.29\00:14:19.95 in the public school system, 00:14:19.99\00:14:21.72 I will plant my Bible on my desk 00:14:21.76\00:14:25.19 and if students came to me and start asking questions 00:14:25.23\00:14:31.53 about God, then I could respond. 00:14:31.57\00:14:33.44 Right 'cause you couldn't initiate... 00:14:33.47\00:14:34.80 But I couldn't volunteer... I couldn't initiate it. 00:14:34.84\00:14:36.71 But anyway, the big difference is the Spirit of God. 00:14:36.74\00:14:41.54 Yes, the Spirit of God. 00:14:41.58\00:14:42.91 See if you think about it, if all wisdom and knowledge 00:14:42.94\00:14:45.25 comes from God, would you want to be in the school system 00:14:45.28\00:14:49.18 that promotes God where you have 00:14:49.22\00:14:51.52 freedom to worship God, to talk about God, 00:14:51.55\00:14:54.72 to have prayer at the beginning of every classroom 00:14:54.76\00:14:58.26 and every subject, science, math? 00:14:58.29\00:15:00.93 It doesn't matter. 00:15:00.96\00:15:02.56 And so that was a great draw 00:15:02.60\00:15:05.93 and that's the difference between public school 00:15:05.97\00:15:09.54 and Christian Seventh-day Adventist School. 00:15:09.57\00:15:13.07 And it's a special blueprint. 00:15:13.11\00:15:15.44 And by the way, a lot of people don't understand 00:15:15.48\00:15:19.55 but Seventh-day Adventist Christian education, 00:15:19.58\00:15:24.05 we have done studies and we found out 00:15:24.09\00:15:26.39 that our students do better on the national exams. 00:15:26.42\00:15:29.96 We score higher, we have 00:15:29.99\00:15:31.59 a higher percentage of students going into college 00:15:31.63\00:15:34.30 and so successfully graduating from college. 00:15:34.33\00:15:37.43 And so the proof is in the pudding 00:15:37.47\00:15:41.17 that Seventh-day Adventists schools are superior. 00:15:41.20\00:15:46.01 Now I look at your children, your son just graduated 00:15:46.04\00:15:49.71 from Oakwood a couple of years ago. 00:15:49.74\00:15:52.58 Yes. And his field of study is what? 00:15:52.61\00:15:55.48 Business finance. 00:15:55.52\00:15:56.85 And then you have a daughter in her last year of Oakwood 00:15:56.89\00:15:58.85 in bio, can really go to medical school. 00:15:58.89\00:16:00.72 Can really go to medical school. 00:16:00.76\00:16:02.09 So again, Christian education, 00:16:02.12\00:16:04.43 Seventh-day Adventist Christian, 00:16:04.46\00:16:05.79 my daughter went all the way 00:16:05.83\00:16:07.16 through Seventh-day Adventist Christian education. 00:16:07.20\00:16:09.00 Aaron, Seventh-day Adventist Christian education. 00:16:09.03\00:16:11.73 My mother made the sacrifice of sin, 00:16:11.77\00:16:13.74 that's the Davison Academy, Delfin Academy, onto which... 00:16:13.77\00:16:17.64 and I went to Wayne County for a year 00:16:17.67\00:16:19.31 but whatever I had to do, you know, to raise money, 00:16:19.34\00:16:23.24 I worked three jobs at Oakwood to stay at Oakwood. 00:16:23.28\00:16:26.11 And I remember, you know, 00:16:26.15\00:16:28.38 one student said to me, "Where you going?" 00:16:28.42\00:16:30.59 I said, "I got to go to my other job." 00:16:30.62\00:16:32.22 You know, and I had 12, 14 credits, 00:16:32.25\00:16:34.52 sometimes 16 credits. 00:16:34.56\00:16:36.02 And but I have to pay for my tuition. 00:16:36.06\00:16:38.29 Right. 00:16:38.33\00:16:39.66 You know, but I'm not going home, 00:16:39.69\00:16:41.03 I want to stay at Oakwood. 00:16:41.06\00:16:42.83 What was it about Oakwood College University? 00:16:42.86\00:16:46.17 What was it, you know? 00:16:46.20\00:16:47.90 Is nothing like the Oakwood experience. 00:16:47.94\00:16:50.74 Nothing like it. 00:16:50.77\00:16:52.17 You meet people from all over the world, 00:16:52.21\00:16:54.71 different cultures, from Africa, 00:16:54.74\00:16:57.05 from all of the beautiful islands 00:16:57.08\00:16:59.51 in the Caribbean. 00:16:59.55\00:17:01.35 People that the teachers were dedicated, 00:17:01.38\00:17:03.99 they were caring. 00:17:04.02\00:17:05.35 Matter of fact, I had a teacher one time. 00:17:05.39\00:17:07.26 She knew I needed to pass Spanish 00:17:07.29\00:17:10.46 in order to graduate. 00:17:10.49\00:17:11.83 Okay. 00:17:11.86\00:17:13.19 And that teacher, I overslept and I had an exam, 00:17:13.23\00:17:15.66 a final exam and I overslept. 00:17:15.70\00:17:18.07 She came to Atwood's Hall. Did she page you? 00:17:18.10\00:17:21.10 And paged me. No. 00:17:21.14\00:17:22.67 And said, "Mr. Key, Senor Key, get up with that, 00:17:22.70\00:17:26.37 out that bed now and come on to class." 00:17:26.41\00:17:28.88 Those were the kind of teachers dedicated. 00:17:28.91\00:17:31.05 You know, you don't get that in a university 00:17:31.08\00:17:33.21 where you're in a classroom with 500 students. 00:17:33.25\00:17:35.85 The teacher cared so much for me 00:17:35.88\00:17:38.09 that she came to get me out of my bed. 00:17:38.12\00:17:41.36 I remember... I'm sorry. 00:17:41.39\00:17:43.66 When you say that Dr. Sylvia Barnes, English. 00:17:43.69\00:17:45.99 Oh. Oh, Sylvia Barnes did not play. 00:17:46.03\00:17:47.83 Cut those adjectives, nouns, verbs. 00:17:47.86\00:17:50.50 So I come to class, the first week of class, 00:17:50.53\00:17:53.13 I'm like, "Really? 00:17:53.17\00:17:54.64 I can't really understand you lady right." 00:17:54.67\00:17:56.84 And she says like, "Where are you from?" 00:17:56.87\00:17:58.87 I said, "Detroit." And, "Where were you from?" 00:17:58.91\00:18:01.34 And people were like, 00:18:01.38\00:18:02.71 "You don't know who you are dealing with." 00:18:02.74\00:18:04.08 That's right. 00:18:04.11\00:18:05.45 And I'm like, "And okay, 'cause we had Mr. Boons, 00:18:05.48\00:18:06.82 I'm not scared of anybody," right? 00:18:06.85\00:18:08.18 That's true. 00:18:08.22\00:18:09.55 And, you know, and she says, "Come here." 00:18:09.58\00:18:11.85 She says, "What are your plans for your future?" 00:18:11.89\00:18:14.86 and I say, "Can I just get through the semester?" 00:18:14.89\00:18:17.03 "We need to think bigger. Bigger." 00:18:17.06\00:18:19.43 And I'm like, "Well, can we get to the next semester?" 00:18:19.46\00:18:21.63 And they were challenging. Yes! 00:18:21.66\00:18:23.00 The teachers were challenging. 00:18:23.03\00:18:24.37 And she was so happy that I made it 00:18:24.40\00:18:25.90 through the first semester, second semester, 00:18:25.93\00:18:28.47 and you know I failed psychology? 00:18:28.50\00:18:30.71 No, I didn't know that. I failed, yes. 00:18:30.74\00:18:32.07 But Dr. Keith Woods came 00:18:32.11\00:18:34.31 and saw me sitting on the steps. 00:18:34.34\00:18:39.55 What's the do... 00:18:39.58\00:18:40.98 Peterson? Nope. 00:18:41.02\00:18:42.35 Cunningham? Nope. 00:18:42.38\00:18:43.72 What's a grey building? Marian hall? 00:18:43.75\00:18:45.09 Marian hall, where we had psychology. 00:18:45.12\00:18:46.76 And I was sitting there crying and he walked up. 00:18:46.79\00:18:48.92 I didn't know who he was. He said, "What's the matter?" 00:18:48.96\00:18:51.29 and I said, "I failed in psychology 00:18:51.33\00:18:53.29 and I want to be a psychologist, 00:18:53.33\00:18:54.66 psychotherapist..." 00:18:54.70\00:18:56.03 But my teacher said there's no hope for me. 00:18:56.06\00:18:58.17 He says, "I'm a new professor here. 00:18:58.20\00:19:00.37 Take my class, take it again." And I took his class. 00:19:00.40\00:19:04.21 And I really didn't have the money, 00:19:04.24\00:19:05.77 but what was I going to do. 00:19:05.81\00:19:07.41 Do you know I got an A out of his class? 00:19:07.44\00:19:08.78 Praise God. 00:19:08.81\00:19:10.15 And he walked me through, every time I see him, 00:19:10.18\00:19:12.28 he just smiles, he laughs, he says, 00:19:12.31\00:19:14.65 "Don't let anyone tell you what you can't become." 00:19:14.68\00:19:16.89 That's right. 00:19:16.92\00:19:18.25 Don't ever let anyone discourage you, you know. 00:19:18.29\00:19:20.59 And yes, we have Andrews and they recently closed 00:19:20.62\00:19:23.39 Atlantic Union College. 00:19:23.43\00:19:24.76 Yes. They joined... 00:19:24.79\00:19:26.19 And we still have so many, Loma Linda 00:19:26.23\00:19:28.00 and all these schools that people not even aware 00:19:28.03\00:19:30.20 of that they're under the Seventh-day Adventist, 00:19:30.23\00:19:32.33 you know, denomination. 00:19:32.37\00:19:34.04 But I feel that Oakwood provides... 00:19:34.07\00:19:38.24 you can go anywhere and get a meal. 00:19:38.27\00:19:40.04 True. 00:19:40.08\00:19:41.41 You let somebody know you're from Oakwood, 00:19:41.44\00:19:42.78 I'm going to, I'm coming to your house... 00:19:42.81\00:19:44.15 Anywhere? Anywhere. 00:19:44.18\00:19:45.51 If you're visiting my church... Let me tell you... 00:19:45.55\00:19:47.72 We, my wife and I were just in Hawaii last week, 00:19:47.75\00:19:52.25 and I went to the Hawaiian Central Church, 00:19:52.29\00:19:56.73 Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:19:56.76\00:19:58.36 And I was looking over to my right 00:19:58.39\00:20:00.33 and I saw this individual say, "Oh, he looks familiar." 00:20:00.36\00:20:04.30 And then he was looking at me. 00:20:04.33\00:20:06.00 After church come to find out he was an Oakwoodite. 00:20:06.03\00:20:09.10 Kelvin Preston, and he was in... 00:20:09.14\00:20:10.47 Yes. I travel 6,000 miles away. 00:20:10.51\00:20:13.58 Yeah, surprising. 00:20:13.61\00:20:14.94 Yes, and he was just at City Temple. 00:20:14.98\00:20:16.44 Yes. And so we greeted each other. 00:20:16.48\00:20:19.15 He was with his wife, and they were 00:20:19.18\00:20:20.52 on the Seven Island cruise in Hawaii. 00:20:20.55\00:20:22.15 Yeah. 00:20:22.18\00:20:23.52 But the bond of Oakwood... 00:20:23.55\00:20:25.95 There it is. 00:20:25.99\00:20:27.32 You're no strangers no matter where you go in the world. 00:20:27.36\00:20:29.52 Let me ask you, "Do you think that you are arrogant?" 00:20:29.56\00:20:32.19 people tend to say you are arrogant. 00:20:32.23\00:20:34.30 No, I'm not arrogant, I am confident. 00:20:34.33\00:20:37.03 And my mother taught me at a small age, 00:20:37.07\00:20:40.14 a young age to always look them in the eye, 00:20:40.17\00:20:43.10 think well of yourself 00:20:43.14\00:20:44.47 or no one else will think well of you. 00:20:44.51\00:20:46.17 So sometimes people mistake my confidence for arrogance 00:20:46.21\00:20:51.01 but it's not that I'm arrogant, it's just I'm confident. 00:20:51.05\00:20:53.52 I believe that I can do anything through Christ. 00:20:53.55\00:20:57.32 My God will supply all my needs. 00:20:57.35\00:20:59.55 So it's confidence that God was about... 00:20:59.59\00:21:02.19 Even when there is no evidence. 00:21:02.22\00:21:03.83 No evidence? My mother was a seamstress. 00:22:03.35\00:22:06.96 I could sew, I can hem pants, I can sew on button, 00:22:06.99\00:22:11.03 I can iron, I can cook, I can do everything. 00:22:11.06\00:22:15.16 I know you can 'cause I've been to your home. 00:22:15.20\00:22:16.70 My mother raised us to be independent. 00:22:16.73\00:22:19.13 Yes. And that's a good thing. 00:22:19.17\00:22:21.04 How come we don't have a homemade class? 00:22:21.07\00:22:23.04 You know, shall we bring homemade back for boys? 00:22:23.07\00:22:24.91 We need to bring that back. 00:22:24.94\00:22:26.27 We do, remember we had... 00:22:26.31\00:22:27.64 We even had that in public school. 00:22:27.68\00:22:29.01 Yes. I had it in the school. 00:22:29.04\00:22:30.38 You know, we need to bring that back. 00:22:30.41\00:22:31.75 You know, we learnt cooking. 00:22:31.78\00:22:33.11 Manhattan, the boys had to take cooking class. 00:22:33.15\00:22:34.48 And I took workshop on auto mechanics. 00:22:34.52\00:22:35.85 All right, okay. I love that name. 00:22:57.11\00:22:58.44 I know. It means like Yahweh, my God. 00:22:58.47\00:22:59.81 Yes it does. 00:22:59.84\00:23:01.18 I said, "Go on, you can borrow the name." 00:23:01.21\00:23:02.54 Yeah. And Micah is beautiful. 00:23:02.58\00:23:05.41 Let's talk about, you know, 00:23:05.45\00:23:06.78 where we get almost four minutes left. 00:23:06.82\00:23:10.02 Your journey with the Lord and you sing 00:23:10.05\00:23:14.79 and you have a beautiful voice. 00:23:14.82\00:23:16.83 And God has given you this voice. 00:23:16.86\00:23:20.70 And every time I hear it, 00:23:20.73\00:23:23.20 it just takes me to another place. 00:23:23.23\00:23:25.97 How and why did you give your talent to the Lord? 00:23:26.00\00:23:29.84 Well, because God has done so much for me. 00:23:29.87\00:23:32.54 He's been with me all my life since the day I was born. 00:23:32.57\00:23:36.28 He's always had his hand on me. 00:23:36.31\00:23:38.15 He's always led me and helped me. 00:23:38.18\00:23:40.48 I've never, never had want for anything 00:23:40.52\00:23:43.18 because God has always supplied all my needs. 00:23:43.22\00:23:45.55 So I can't help but to give back to God. 00:23:45.59\00:23:48.52 And I tell you, this is what I want to say to individuals 00:23:48.56\00:23:54.10 who doubt God. 00:23:54.13\00:23:57.20 Never, never doubt his love. Never. 00:23:57.23\00:24:01.04 Never, never know 00:24:01.07\00:24:07.24 Oh never 00:24:07.28\00:24:10.15 Doubt his love 00:24:10.18\00:24:11.98 Never doubt God's love for you 00:24:12.01\00:24:16.69 When burdens press all about your soul 00:24:16.72\00:24:22.79 And the ways of trouble seem to roar 00:24:22.82\00:24:27.56 Just never, never doubt his love for you. 00:24:27.60\00:24:33.64 Never doubt God's Love. 00:24:33.67\00:24:35.17 You can do anything at any time with God, 00:24:35.20\00:24:38.17 and God has shown me in my life. 00:24:38.21\00:24:40.18 What he can do. 00:24:40.21\00:24:41.54 And I love him so much for and so it's easy to serve Him 00:24:41.58\00:24:44.91 and to do His will. 00:24:44.95\00:24:46.41 I'm so glad that you remained my friend 00:24:46.45\00:24:48.42 after all these years. 00:24:48.45\00:24:49.78 You know, and we even live in the same community. 00:24:49.82\00:24:53.12 Same zip code. Same zip code. 00:24:53.15\00:24:54.79 So we go to the same pole. 00:24:54.82\00:24:56.73 Remember when we were there when President Obama 00:24:56.76\00:25:00.60 became president, we were in line together. 00:25:00.63\00:25:02.76 Singing We Shall Overcome. 00:25:02.80\00:25:04.63 You just kept singing 00:25:04.67\00:25:06.00 and I was leading the whole thing... 00:25:06.03\00:25:07.60 And we didn't care what people thought. 00:25:07.64\00:25:08.97 We did not. 00:25:09.00\00:25:10.34 Then everybody joined in with us. 00:25:10.37\00:25:11.71 And I mean that line wrapped around 00:25:11.74\00:25:13.31 two or three times. 00:25:13.34\00:25:14.68 Yes. That was so amazing. 00:25:14.71\00:25:16.54 And I still supported you for council. 00:25:16.58\00:25:18.68 Yes, you did. 00:25:18.71\00:25:20.05 You wanted to be on the city council. 00:25:20.08\00:25:21.42 But God knew. God knew. 00:25:21.45\00:25:22.78 God knew, you know. Never doubt his love. 00:25:22.82\00:25:25.42 Never doubt his love. I know it was maybe a setback. 00:25:25.45\00:25:28.59 "Oh, I didn't become the council in Detroit City," 00:25:28.62\00:25:31.53 but God had greater things for you. 00:25:31.56\00:25:33.06 But know why I did not win because they told me Dr. Logan 00:25:33.09\00:25:38.17 did not attend the meetings on Saturday. 00:25:38.20\00:25:41.00 And I told them, "I would not, could not, and will not." 00:25:41.04\00:25:44.57 And they had the Democratic meetings 00:25:44.61\00:25:46.24 on Saturday. 00:25:46.27\00:25:47.61 And so they put it in the Detroit news. 00:25:47.64\00:25:49.84 She was the only one with Ph D, Business owner. 00:25:49.88\00:25:53.72 She wasn't looking for a job 00:25:53.75\00:25:55.75 but because she did not networked 00:25:55.78\00:25:58.49 within the party on Saturday, and her statement was, 00:25:58.52\00:26:02.49 "I am a Seventh-day Adventist." 00:26:02.52\00:26:04.49 Praise God, you are witness for God. 00:26:04.53\00:26:06.26 Yes, and everyone knew no matter what the cause, 00:26:06.29\00:26:09.00 the price, I went, you know, 00:26:09.03\00:26:10.57 the race is not given to the swift or the strong 00:26:10.60\00:26:12.83 but to those who endure to the end 00:26:12.87\00:26:14.80 but I was not going to compromise. 00:26:14.84\00:26:16.97 No regrets. No regrets. 00:26:17.01\00:26:18.47 I have no regrets. 00:26:18.51\00:26:19.91 And then we had a fire on Grand River, 00:26:19.94\00:26:21.88 God moved us here and even with, you know, 00:26:21.91\00:26:25.28 going through what I've gone through with Arthur, 00:26:25.31\00:26:27.58 and I have no regrets because you know why? 00:26:27.62\00:26:30.29 Jesus is coming again. 00:26:30.32\00:26:32.02 Soon and very soon and he will not tarry. 00:26:32.05\00:26:34.62 He will not tarry. I'm just excited. 00:26:34.66\00:26:37.83 Closing remarks, 00:26:37.86\00:26:39.23 Christian Seventh-day Adventist education, 00:26:39.26\00:26:41.03 why do we need to put our children 00:26:41.06\00:26:43.06 in Christian Seventh-day Adventist education? 00:26:43.10\00:26:45.70 Several reasons. 00:26:45.73\00:26:47.07 Number one, Christ is soon to come. 00:26:47.10\00:26:48.84 All the children should be taught of the Lord 00:26:48.87\00:26:51.44 and God wants our children to be taught of the Lord. 00:26:51.47\00:26:54.21 Yes. That's the number one reason. 00:26:54.24\00:26:56.18 The number one reason. 00:26:56.21\00:26:58.11 And so therefore everything that we're doing, 00:26:58.15\00:27:00.85 empowering our children, and we need to have 00:27:00.88\00:27:03.35 our pastors behind our schools. 00:27:03.39\00:27:05.45 We need to get our pastors all on board. 00:27:05.49\00:27:07.86 And we need to, you know, 00:27:07.89\00:27:09.22 make sure that even their children 00:27:09.26\00:27:11.76 are in Christian Seventh-day Adventist education. 00:27:11.79\00:27:13.33 And we have some good pastors there are supporting. 00:27:13.36\00:27:15.43 Oh, yes, we do.
