The harvest truly is plenteous
but the laborers are few.
00:00:01.98\00:00:03.24
Pray ye, therefore,
the Lord of the harvest
00:00:03.54\00:00:06.16
that He will... He will send
forth laborers into His harvest.
00:00:06.36\00:00:10.41
Also, I heard the
voice of the Lord say:
00:00:10.61\00:00:13.05
"Who shall I send? "
00:00:13.35\00:00:14.81
"And who will go for us? "
00:00:15.02\00:00:17.61
Then said I: "Here am
I, send me... send me. "
00:00:17.81\00:00:22.75
Life on the Edge will enable
you to be an effective harvester
00:00:23.45\00:00:26.76
for the Lord. We now
invite you into our classroom
00:00:26.86\00:00:30.07
to come experience LIFE.
00:00:30.27\00:00:34.06
We'd like to welcome you back
00:00:43.31\00:00:44.99
to the Lay
Institute for Evangelism.
00:00:45.19\00:00:47.22
We're located here on the
campus of Pine Lake Retreat
00:00:47.42\00:00:50.04
in Central Florida.
00:00:50.24\00:00:51.95
We'd also like to welcome those
00:00:52.15\00:00:53.38
of you that are at home.
00:00:53.48\00:00:54.55
and that are watching
00:00:54.65\00:00:55.62
the Lay Institute for Evangelism
00:00:55.63\00:00:57.37
whether you're on a DVD,
00:00:57.57\00:00:58.68
you may be on the Internet.
00:00:58.78\00:00:59.88
You may be on one of the
00:00:59.98\00:01:01.05
networks, but we're just
glad that you're here with us.
00:01:01.15\00:01:03.23
We're going to be
studying God's law today.
00:01:03.43\00:01:05.93
Does God expect His
people to pay any attention
00:01:06.13\00:01:09.21
to the law that He set
out back in the Old Testament?
00:01:09.41\00:01:12.62
And that's going to be
our focus today as we study.
00:01:12.82\00:01:15.27
But it's going to be centered
- that focus on the law -
00:01:15.47\00:01:18.08
is going to be
centered around Christ.
00:01:18.29\00:01:20.43
So we're going to
go now to our screen,
00:01:20.63\00:01:22.30
and if you'll notice
the title of this study
00:01:22.40\00:01:24.91
is The Law of God.
Now what's our code here?
00:01:25.11\00:01:27.95
Our code is LG. So when you're
marking this in your Bibles
00:01:28.15\00:01:31.19
you simply use the code LG.
00:01:31.39\00:01:33.81
Just like in all of our
other studies, this study too
00:01:34.01\00:01:38.11
has a purpose. And the
purpose of this study is:
00:01:38.21\00:01:41.31
Remember that the keeping
of God's law is not in order
00:01:52.47\00:01:56.44
to be saved. The
keeping of God's law
00:01:56.64\00:01:59.02
is an expression of
our love for our Creator.
00:01:59.22\00:02:03.71
Our love for our Redeemer.
00:02:04.01\00:02:06.35
Our love for our High Priest
in the heavenly sanctuary.
00:02:06.55\00:02:09.82
Our love for our
soon-coming King.
00:02:10.02\00:02:12.77
The keeping of God's
law is a simple expression
00:02:12.97\00:02:17.24
of your love for Jesus.
00:02:17.44\00:02:19.88
And so that's what we're
going to talk about today.
00:02:20.29\00:02:22.53
Each one of our studies,
again, are centered on Jesus.
00:02:22.56\00:02:26.26
And I need four volunteers.
00:02:26.46\00:02:28.24
Before we go to our graphic...
00:02:28.34\00:02:29.73
Maybe we've already been there
00:02:29.83\00:02:30.88
and you got a
quick glimpse of it.
00:02:30.98\00:02:32.08
But I need four
people to volunteer
00:02:32.28\00:02:33.71
very quickly. All
right, I've got three there
00:02:33.91\00:02:35.93
and then why
don't you come up here.
00:02:36.03\00:02:37.35
And I just need you
to stand right here.
00:02:37.48\00:02:39.15
Just go ahead and stand
right here and I'm going to
00:02:39.45\00:02:41.36
label each one of you.
00:02:41.46\00:02:43.50
And so you are
going to be the law.
00:02:43.70\00:02:48.53
OK, you're the law.
00:02:48.73\00:02:49.89
And you are going to be sin.
00:02:50.09\00:02:52.52
I'm sorry, Vanessa,
but you... OK. All right.
00:02:52.72\00:02:55.91
Just for the... This is just for
the sake of the illustration.
00:02:56.05\00:02:58.19
You're going to be grace, Tim.
00:02:58.39\00:03:00.76
And you are going to be
Jesus. That's absolutely right.
00:03:00.96\00:03:04.81
So you have heard people say
00:03:05.11\00:03:07.71
that God's law has
been done away with.
00:03:07.91\00:03:10.34
Have you ever
heard people say that?
00:03:10.74\00:03:12.74
I've heard people say that
in my ministry over and over
00:03:12.99\00:03:15.49
again. So what we're going to do
is we're just going to go ahead
00:03:15.59\00:03:18.53
and we're going to
tell the law to sit down.
00:03:18.73\00:03:21.36
Because the law has been
done away with according to some
00:03:21.56\00:03:24.07
people. Now if we
do away with God's law,
00:03:24.27\00:03:28.21
the Bible tells us that
sin is the transgression
00:03:28.41\00:03:32.01
or the breaking or the
living contrary to God's law.
00:03:32.22\00:03:36.38
So if we don't have
the law any more, then
00:03:36.58\00:03:38.31
we don't have sin. OK,
so sin, you may have a seat.
00:03:38.51\00:03:42.15
The Bible tells us that Jesus
was full of grace and truth.
00:03:42.85\00:03:48.37
We're going to
learn in our study today
00:03:48.50\00:03:50.45
that God's grace is the
same thing or synonymous
00:03:50.65\00:03:55.81
with God's power.
00:03:56.01\00:03:58.05
Grace is God's power that
teaches us to overcome sin.
00:03:58.26\00:04:02.51
But remember, if
we've done away with the law
00:04:02.71\00:04:05.58
then we no
longer have what? Sin.
00:04:05.78\00:04:07.97
And if we don't have
sin we don't need grace...
00:04:08.17\00:04:11.22
which is the power
of God to overcome sin.
00:04:11.42\00:04:13.02
So grace, you can have a
seat. Thank you very much.
00:04:13.22\00:04:15.07
Now the Bible says that the law,
the transgression of the law,
00:04:15.37\00:04:20.24
is sin. And we would
need power to overcome sin
00:04:20.45\00:04:24.43
or we would need grace
to overcome sin, but...
00:04:24.53\00:04:26.57
but we don't have grace any more
so we don't then need the Author
00:04:26.77\00:04:30.24
of grace which is Jesus.
00:04:30.44\00:04:32.84
So Jesus, you can get
out of our lives as well.
00:04:33.04\00:04:35.22
Now see, are you comfortable...
Are any of you comfortable
00:04:35.42\00:04:38.41
getting rid of Jesus?
00:04:38.61\00:04:41.25
OK, so if... Why
aren't you comfortable
00:04:41.35\00:04:44.73
getting rid of Jesus?
00:04:44.94\00:04:46.11
Because He is our Savior.
00:04:46.31\00:04:48.51
We need Jesus to save us.
00:04:48.71\00:04:50.71
Jesus is going to
save us by giving us grace
00:04:50.91\00:04:54.69
or power to overcome sin
which is defined in scripture
00:04:54.89\00:04:59.19
as the
transgression of God's law.
00:04:59.39\00:05:02.53
So now let's go to our
Center It on the screen here.
00:05:02.83\00:05:06.05
It says:
00:05:06.25\00:05:07.27
I don't know about you,
but I'm very uncomfortable
00:05:29.16\00:05:32.19
being without Jesus
00:05:32.39\00:05:35.34
because I need His power
to overcome my own struggle
00:05:35.54\00:05:38.96
where my flesh wants to
live differently than what God
00:05:39.87\00:05:42.88
has prescribed
for me in His Word.
00:05:42.98\00:05:45.52
Our next graphic here shows
00:05:45.95\00:05:48.49
all of the texts that we are
using in The Law of God study.
00:05:48.69\00:05:53.10
These are the texts again.
Those of you that are at home -
00:05:53.30\00:05:55.53
those of you that are here
in the classroom, you have heard
00:05:55.74\00:05:57.79
this before - but
those of you that are at home
00:05:58.00\00:05:59.51
these are the texts
that you are going to write
00:05:59.71\00:06:01.53
in the front or
the back of your Bible
00:06:01.63\00:06:03.33
so that you can reference them
00:06:03.43\00:06:04.68
as you're giving
your Bible study.
00:06:04.88\00:06:06.50
So you can see those
there, and these texts are
00:06:06.70\00:06:09.19
divided into
four different groups.
00:06:09.29\00:06:11.41
The first group is,
of course, about Jesus.
00:06:11.61\00:06:14.62
Then grace, then
sin... and then the law.
00:06:14.82\00:06:18.18
I also have these on
another graphic for you
00:06:18.28\00:06:20.30
so that you can see those
texts just a little bit better.
00:06:20.50\00:06:23.30
And all of these texts
that you're looking at here:
00:06:23.50\00:06:25.25
you see Jesus, you see
grace, and then you see
00:06:25.45\00:06:27.66
sin and the law. All
of these texts will be
00:06:27.76\00:06:30.62
on our screen as we
go through our study.
00:06:30.82\00:06:33.58
We're going to
look at a concept.
00:06:33.78\00:06:36.07
Prior to our study today
on your screen you will notice
00:06:36.37\00:06:40.12
that I have antichrist on
the one side of your screen
00:06:40.32\00:06:43.25
and Jesus Christ on the
other side of your screen.
00:06:43.45\00:06:45.56
Pastor Sizemore did two
presentations previous to this
00:06:45.96\00:06:50.63
one on the antichrist power.
00:06:50.83\00:06:53.56
You remember those presentations
on the antichrist power.
00:06:53.77\00:06:56.25
And one of the verses that
he focused on in those studies
00:06:56.45\00:06:59.77
was Daniel chapter 7 verse 25.
00:06:59.97\00:07:02.45
So let's turn in our
Bibles to Daniel chapter 7
00:07:02.65\00:07:06.95
and verse 25. So you're simply
going to the Old Testament
00:07:08.01\00:07:12.43
book of Daniel. Right
after Ezekiel you have Daniel
00:07:12.53\00:07:16.51
chapter 7 and verse 25.
00:07:16.65\00:07:20.46
Daniel chapter 7 and verse 25.
00:07:20.66\00:07:23.50
The Word of God
says this... Daniel 7:25.
00:07:23.80\00:07:27.39
Make sure those of you at
home you're getting your Bibles,
00:07:27.60\00:07:29.35
you're reading this with us.
00:07:29.55\00:07:30.71
Speaking of the
antichrist in Daniel 7:25
00:07:30.74\00:07:34.87
God's Word says: "And he
shall speak pompous words
00:07:35.07\00:07:38.52
against the Most High,
00:07:38.72\00:07:40.80
shall persecute the
saints of the Most High,
00:07:41.00\00:07:44.07
and shall intend to change
00:07:44.27\00:07:47.27
times and laws.
00:07:47.47\00:07:50.90
Then the saints shall be
given into his hand for a time,
00:07:51.10\00:07:53.28
and times, and half a time. "
00:07:53.48\00:07:55.64
So the antichrist
power wants to do what?
00:07:55.84\00:07:59.51
He wants to do two things:
he wants to change God's time
00:07:59.71\00:08:03.30
and he wants to
change God's law.
00:08:03.51\00:08:06.63
That's right. Now let's go
to Matthew chapter 5 verse 17.
00:08:06.83\00:08:11.69
This is a text that we are
going to use in our study today.
00:08:11.83\00:08:15.18
But we're doing just
a little bit of pre-work
00:08:15.38\00:08:18.28
prior to getting to that
study so that we can understand
00:08:18.48\00:08:21.29
God's law in light of
antichrist and Jesus Christ.
00:08:21.49\00:08:25.29
So we're going to
Matthew chapter 5 verse 17.
00:08:25.49\00:08:27.69
I actually have
this on a graphic here.
00:08:27.79\00:08:30.08
Matthew chapter 5
verse 17 Jesus says:
00:08:30.28\00:08:32.77
So just go right
back to our screen there.
00:08:53.37\00:08:55.94
The antichrist
wants to change God's law;
00:08:56.14\00:08:59.02
Jesus Christ says
the law will not change.
00:08:59.22\00:09:02.38
Is that concept clear?
00:09:02.58\00:09:04.44
So any
interpretation of scripture
00:09:04.64\00:09:08.40
that seeks to change God's law
00:09:08.60\00:09:12.17
is a product of who? Antichrist.
00:09:12.37\00:09:15.67
Let me re... Let
me re-state that.
00:09:15.97\00:09:18.32
Any interpretation of scripture
00:09:18.62\00:09:21.25
that seeks to change
God's Ten Commandment moral law
00:09:21.46\00:09:26.65
is a product of antichrist.
00:09:26.85\00:09:30.51
If... if God was
going to change His own law,
00:09:30.71\00:09:34.02
then antichrist
wouldn't even care, would he?
00:09:34.22\00:09:36.09
Because, you know, let
God just be wishy-washy
00:09:36.29\00:09:38.64
and change His law. But
no! God is the same yesterday,
00:09:38.84\00:09:41.38
today, and forever. God
in Malachi 3:6 He says He
00:09:41.58\00:09:44.19
WILL NOT change.
00:09:44.39\00:09:46.37
So God's law is just
as eternal as God Himself.
00:09:46.57\00:09:50.06
Antichrist wants to
flip that law upside down -
00:09:50.26\00:09:52.99
change a little bit of
it - so that we are deceived
00:09:53.20\00:09:55.68
and we are
worshiping antichrist.
00:09:55.88\00:09:57.55
But Jesus Christ says that
His law is not going to change.
00:09:57.75\00:10:01.46
So keep that in mind.
After we finish our study today
00:10:01.66\00:10:05.81
probably in another
one of our programs -
00:10:06.01\00:10:08.13
I don't know if we'll
get to it in this one -
00:10:08.23\00:10:09.81
if we don't, you
want to remember this.
00:10:10.02\00:10:12.29
We are going to be
studying the difficult passages
00:10:12.49\00:10:16.53
in the scripture or
the interesting passages
00:10:16.63\00:10:19.04
in the scripture
that talk about God's law.
00:10:19.14\00:10:21.59
And some of those are
being twisted or wrested
00:10:21.79\00:10:25.02
to Christians' destruction.
00:10:25.22\00:10:27.55
You know, Peter even...
Peter when he was talking about
00:10:27.58\00:10:30.27
some of Paul's writings... Peter
said that some of the things
00:10:30.47\00:10:33.51
that Paul said were
difficult to understand.
00:10:33.71\00:10:35.99
And so we... we ourselves
can expect that we're going to
00:10:36.19\00:10:39.55
have to study deeper in order
to understand those verses.
00:10:39.65\00:10:43.23
Well you remember when we
were talking we said we had
00:10:43.43\00:10:45.61
law then we had
sin then we had grace
00:10:45.81\00:10:48.51
then we had who? Jesus. And
that's exactly what our next
00:10:48.71\00:10:51.51
graphic says, isn't it? Jesus.
00:10:51.61\00:10:53.47
What we are going to do
now is we are going to study
00:10:53.57\00:10:55.76
about Jesus... the first
part of our four parts here.
00:10:55.96\00:11:00.02
And we're going
to turn in our Bibles
00:11:00.32\00:11:02.88
to our first Law of God text.
00:11:03.08\00:11:06.16
And that's going to be Acts
chapter 4 verses 10 through 12.
00:11:06.36\00:11:09.97
You'll mark that in
your Bible with the code 1LG.
00:11:10.27\00:11:13.77
Put that in a
circle... draw the line.
00:11:13.97\00:11:15.91
And since we
haven't been anywhere yet
00:11:16.01\00:11:17.55
you don't write
anything above the line.
00:11:17.58\00:11:19.52
But Matthew 1:21 is
where we will be going next.
00:11:19.62\00:11:22.68
So we're opening our Bibles
- opening now our Bibles -
00:11:22.88\00:11:25.35
to Acts chapter 4
verses 10 through 12.
00:11:25.55\00:11:28.88
Now Mike is going to
read that for us, if he will.
00:11:29.18\00:11:32.30
And we are... the reason that we
are reading starting in verse 10
00:11:32.50\00:11:36.46
is because that gives
us the name that verse 12
00:11:36.66\00:11:40.22
talks about. So we
are in Acts chapter 4
00:11:40.42\00:11:43.62
and verse 10.
00:11:43.82\00:11:46.43
And most of us are
there. Robert is almost there,
00:11:48.74\00:11:52.95
so why don't we go
ahead and read now.
00:11:53.15\00:11:55.06
"Be it known unto you all
and to all the people of Israel
00:11:55.26\00:11:58.54
that by the name of
Jesus Christ of Nazareth
00:11:58.74\00:12:01.21
whom ye crucified, whom
God raised from the dead,
00:12:01.41\00:12:04.30
even by Him doth this man
stand here before you whole.
00:12:04.50\00:12:07.97
This is the stone which was
set at naught of you builders
00:12:08.17\00:12:11.36
which is become
the head of the corner.
00:12:11.56\00:12:13.48
Neither is there
salvation in any other
00:12:13.68\00:12:16.17
for there is none other name
under heaven given among men
00:12:16.37\00:12:19.15
whereby we must be saved. "
00:12:19.35\00:12:20.93
So scripture here tells us -
00:12:21.13\00:12:23.20
the reason we read
verses 10 through 12:
00:12:23.40\00:12:25.41
we start in verse 10
to get the name of Jesus.
00:12:25.51\00:12:28.26
And then verse 12 told us
that there is no other name
00:12:28.46\00:12:32.16
under heaven given among men
00:12:32.37\00:12:34.91
by which we must
be... what's the word?
00:12:35.12\00:12:37.21
Saved.
00:12:37.42\00:12:38.77
So there's only one name
00:12:38.97\00:12:40.80
under heaven given to us
00:12:41.00\00:12:43.14
that we can be saved by
00:12:43.24\00:12:44.45
and that is the
name of Jesus Christ.
00:12:44.55\00:12:47.49
That's absolutely right.
00:12:47.69\00:12:48.84
Well, Jesus came to save us.
00:12:49.04\00:12:52.64
What did Jesus
come to save us from?
00:12:52.84\00:12:57.67
Sin. Can you give me a
Bible reference for that?
00:12:57.87\00:13:01.06
Can you give me a
Bible reference for that?
00:13:01.26\00:13:03.10
What did Jesus
come to save us from?
00:13:03.40\00:13:05.65
Well if you would...
remembered on the screen there
00:13:05.85\00:13:08.32
our next reference
was what? Matthew 1:21.
00:13:08.52\00:13:11.13
So that's exactly
where we're going now.
00:13:11.33\00:13:12.99
The Law of God study
second text is Matthew 1:21.
00:13:13.19\00:13:17.29
We're going to Matthew
1:21 so that we can understand
00:13:17.50\00:13:22.03
what is it that God
came to save us... or that
00:13:22.23\00:13:26.12
Jesus came to save us from.
00:13:26.22\00:13:28.25
And can you read
Matthew 1:21 for us, Darlene?
00:13:28.43\00:13:31.64
"And she will bring
forth a son, and ye shall call
00:13:31.84\00:13:34.40
His name Jesus for
He shall save His people
00:13:34.50\00:13:37.46
from their sins. "
00:13:37.56\00:13:39.45
Now Darlene did an incredible
job there, didn't she,
00:13:39.65\00:13:41.54
of making sure she was making
eye contact with her audience.
00:13:41.64\00:13:44.40
Those of you at home saw that.
00:13:44.60\00:13:46.11
Those that were here in
the classroom just saw her
00:13:46.31\00:13:47.81
looking at a camera...
but she was looking at you.
00:13:47.91\00:13:50.06
And when you give these Bible
studies you want to make sure
00:13:50.26\00:13:52.60
that you are looking
at the people that you are
00:13:52.81\00:13:54.70
giving these Bible studies to.
00:13:54.80\00:13:56.34
You need to make sure that
that eye contact is consistent,
00:13:56.54\00:13:59.15
and you can do
that if you practice.
00:13:59.35\00:14:02.67
So get your Bible out.
After this program is over
00:14:02.90\00:14:05.92
go stand in front of a
mirror and read to yourself.
00:14:06.12\00:14:08.85
Put your finger there so
you don't lose your place
00:14:09.05\00:14:11.11
and just read. And look
ahead while you're reading
00:14:11.31\00:14:14.03
so that you can give some eye
contact while you're talking.
00:14:14.23\00:14:16.70
The point of Matthew
chapter 1 and verse 21
00:14:17.47\00:14:20.74
was to show us that we are
going to be saved from what?
00:14:20.84\00:14:24.56
Sin. "And His name
shall be called Jesus
00:14:24.79\00:14:28.80
for He shall save His
people from their sins. "
00:14:29.01\00:14:33.58
So we started out
in Acts chapter 4.
00:14:33.78\00:14:36.75
We found out that Jesus is
the only name that we can be
00:14:36.95\00:14:39.90
saved by. What is it
that we need to be saved from?
00:14:40.00\00:14:42.82
We went to Matthew
1:21 and we found out that
00:14:43.02\00:14:45.47
Jesus came to save us from our
sins. That's absolutely right.
00:14:45.67\00:14:49.54
Now what is it that
Jesus brings into our lives...
00:14:49.74\00:14:54.42
what is it that
Jesus brings into our lives
00:14:54.62\00:14:57.15
when we accept Him?
00:14:57.35\00:14:58.73
What is it that
Jesus brings into our lives
00:14:58.93\00:15:01.71
when we accept
Him? And for this answer
00:15:01.81\00:15:03.66
we're going to go to our
third text in this study.
00:15:03.86\00:15:07.25
And that third text is
I Corinthians chapter 1
00:15:07.45\00:15:11.31
and verse 24. I
Corinthians chapter 1
00:15:11.51\00:15:15.04
and verse 24. And we'll
go ahead and let Shelleta
00:15:15.24\00:15:18.79
read this for us as
soon as we are all there.
00:15:18.89\00:15:20.84
I still hear
some... some pages turning.
00:15:20.94\00:15:23.03
Now the reason that we
wait for those of you at home...
00:15:23.23\00:15:25.54
the reason we wait until
everyone gets to that reference
00:15:25.74\00:15:29.03
is so they can see
it from their Bible.
00:15:29.23\00:15:31.63
Many people have a Bible
that maybe Grandma gave them
00:15:31.83\00:15:34.13
or Great-grandma and
it's special to them.
00:15:34.23\00:15:36.28
And that's... many people say
"You know, that's the only Bible
00:15:36.48\00:15:39.23
I'm going to use. "
And so when you're giving
00:15:39.33\00:15:41.18
these Bible studies,
allow people to find it
00:15:41.28\00:15:43.17
in their own Bibles. So Shelleta
can you read that for us?
00:15:43.27\00:15:45.93
"For unto them which are
called, both Jews and Greeks,
00:15:46.13\00:15:50.21
Christ the power of God
and the wisdom of God. "
00:15:50.41\00:15:53.69
OK. So we ask Jesus
Christ to come into our lives
00:15:53.89\00:15:58.22
and what does Jesus
bring into our lives?
00:15:58.25\00:16:00.86
There's two things
listed there in that text.
00:16:01.06\00:16:02.75
He brings power
and He brings wisdom.
00:16:03.15\00:16:07.15
Have you ever gotten yourself
into one of those situations
00:16:07.25\00:16:09.05
where you like uh-uh-uh-uh,
I just don't know what to do?
00:16:09.15\00:16:11.23
I mean, if I go this way it just
seems like it's a bad choice.
00:16:11.43\00:16:14.01
If I go this way,
it's just a bad choice.
00:16:14.21\00:16:15.73
I should have never
made the first bad choice
00:16:15.93\00:16:17.19
to get me where I was.
00:16:17.29\00:16:18.69
You've been in those situations.
00:16:18.79\00:16:19.96
Well Christ
brings to us His power
00:16:20.16\00:16:24.63
and His wisdom so we don't have
to get that uh-uh-uh-uh look.
00:16:24.83\00:16:29.23
We can just rely
on Christ, can't we?
00:16:29.43\00:16:32.03
Now have you ever
heard anyone say: "You know,
00:16:33.15\00:16:35.58
when... my life just got
so bad I just hit rock bottom
00:16:35.78\00:16:40.41
and the only place
I could look was up. "
00:16:40.51\00:16:42.35
Have you ever
heard anybody say that?
00:16:42.55\00:16:43.81
Well I have a theory
on what rock bottom is.
00:16:44.01\00:16:46.48
You want to hear that theory?
00:16:46.58\00:16:47.65
The theory about
rock bottom is this:
00:16:47.85\00:16:50.17
in I Corinthians
chapter 10 verse 4
00:16:50.37\00:16:53.61
it says that Christ is the Rock.
00:16:53.81\00:16:56.89
So I think when
we hit rock bottom
00:16:57.09\00:16:59.49
we don't really hit a
literal rock, we hit THE ROCK.
00:16:59.69\00:17:03.50
And of course when
you smash into something
00:17:03.70\00:17:06.41
and it then enshrouds
you and you open your eyes,
00:17:06.51\00:17:08.55
all you can see is Jesus.
00:17:08.75\00:17:10.24
So when we hit rock bottom
we need that power of God.
00:17:10.44\00:17:14.11
And literally when we hit rock
bottom we are hitting THE ROCK,
00:17:14.32\00:17:17.48
Jesus Christ. And He
just wraps His arms around us.
00:17:17.68\00:17:20.43
It doesn't matter
what struggle we have.
00:17:20.63\00:17:22.57
Doesn't matter what
sin turns our world over
00:17:22.77\00:17:25.47
day after day... Jesus is
there to give us His power.
00:17:25.57\00:17:31.24
Now the next reference
that we are going to go to
00:17:31.45\00:17:34.29
talks about God's power
- talks about God's grace
00:17:34.49\00:17:40.19
being given to us. You remember
Jesus is the Author of grace.
00:17:40.39\00:17:43.16
If we went to
John chapter 1 verse 14
00:17:43.36\00:17:45.99
John chapter 1...
I'll just quote it for you.
00:17:46.19\00:17:48.17
John chapter 1 verse 14 says:
00:17:48.27\00:17:50.01
"And the Word became
flesh and dwelt among us. "
00:17:50.21\00:17:53.69
And that Word,
of course, is Jesus.
00:17:53.89\00:17:56.29
"The Word became
flesh and dwelt among us
00:17:56.49\00:17:58.54
and we beheld His glory,
00:17:58.74\00:18:00.89
the glory as of the
only begotten of the Father,
00:18:01.09\00:18:04.70
full of" what?
"Grace and truth. "
00:18:04.90\00:18:09.60
So Jesus was full of grace.
00:18:09.80\00:18:12.95
When we accept
Jesus into our lives
00:18:13.05\00:18:15.62
I Corinthians 1:24 told us
00:18:15.72\00:18:17.66
that we get the power of God
and we get the wisdom of God.
00:18:17.86\00:18:21.67
And this would be a good
point for us to remember:
00:18:22.07\00:18:24.52
that maybe some of us
when we're marking our Bibles
00:18:24.72\00:18:28.43
or when we're
memorizing the scripture here
00:18:28.63\00:18:30.60
at Lay Institute for
Evangelism for our quiz -
00:18:30.70\00:18:33.04
which I forgot to
give you yesterday
00:18:33.07\00:18:35.34
which we'll
probably do this afternoon -
00:18:35.54\00:18:37.44
when we're memorizing
it's good for us to remember
00:18:37.64\00:18:40.83
that it's easier for
us to memorize things
00:18:41.03\00:18:43.83
with the power of God
and the wisdom of God.
00:18:43.93\00:18:47.44
If we ask Jesus to come into us,
you know, the Bible describes
00:18:47.64\00:18:50.59
God's power in a
slightly different way
00:18:50.69\00:18:52.80
in our next reference. On
your screen you will see there
00:18:52.90\00:18:55.72
that our fourth Law
of God text or reference
00:18:55.92\00:18:59.24
is I Peter 1:13.
00:18:59.44\00:19:01.73
So when you're marking
this you're in I Peter 1:13
00:19:01.93\00:19:05.08
you put 4LG to indicate
that you're in the fourth text.
00:19:05.29\00:19:08.33
You draw that line. Above
the line we just came from
00:19:08.54\00:19:11.33
Where did we come from?
00:19:11.43\00:19:12.71
Where did we come
from? I Corinthians 1:24.
00:19:12.91\00:19:15.86
And then the reference we
are going to go to is what?
00:19:16.06\00:19:18.47
Ephesians 2:8.
That's absolutely right.
00:19:18.67\00:19:21.24
So Anita, can you go
ahead and read for us
00:19:21.44\00:19:23.51
I Peter chapter 1 and verse 13.
00:19:23.71\00:19:27.63
"Wherefore gird up
the loins of your mind.
00:19:27.83\00:19:32.13
Be sober and hope to the
end for the grace that is to be
00:19:32.33\00:19:36.32
brought unto you at the
revelation of Jesus Christ. "
00:19:36.42\00:19:39.78
Thank you. So
when we accept Jesus...
00:19:40.39\00:19:42.94
when we accept Jesus into
our lives we receive His power
00:19:43.14\00:19:47.98
and His wisdom. Now the
Bible said there in I Peter 1:13
00:19:48.18\00:19:52.12
that grace is given to us at
the revelation of Jesus Christ.
00:19:52.32\00:19:57.42
When Jesus becomes real to you,
00:19:57.62\00:19:59.90
He who is full of grace
brings that grace into your life
00:20:00.10\00:20:04.64
and you receive His power.
00:20:04.84\00:20:06.89
Now the next three references...
00:20:07.09\00:20:10.39
We're going to go three
references and we're going to
00:20:10.59\00:20:13.07
read those in rapid succession.
00:20:13.17\00:20:15.32
And as those
graphics go by on your screen
00:20:15.52\00:20:19.34
you'll see that
they go pretty quick
00:20:19.54\00:20:20.82
'cause we're just going to
go from one graphic to the next.
00:20:21.02\00:20:23.16
But then on the last graphic
there on these three texts
00:20:23.36\00:20:26.78
we are going to parallel
three principles that we find
00:20:26.98\00:20:32.19
in each one of these verses.
00:20:32.30\00:20:34.00
We're going to parallel
three principles that we find
00:20:34.20\00:20:37.08
in each one of these verses.
00:20:37.29\00:20:38.65
So our next reference is
Ephesians chapter 2 verse 8.
00:20:38.85\00:20:42.51
You see that on your screen...
well, you probably don't
00:20:42.81\00:20:46.17
because we're going to skip
what's there and we're going to
00:20:46.37\00:20:48.97
Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 8.
00:20:49.17\00:20:53.71
We had already done our review
so it wasn't necessary for us
00:20:53.91\00:20:56.24
to... to use that graphic there.
00:20:56.44\00:20:58.12
So let's go to Ephesians
chapter 2 verse 8 there, Dosung,
00:20:58.42\00:21:01.04
and we're going to
see three principles here
00:21:01.14\00:21:03.46
and you tell me what those
principles are after you read it
00:21:03.66\00:21:05.57
all right? "For by grace
are ye saved through faith
00:21:05.67\00:21:09.94
and that not of yourselves...
it is the gift of God. "
00:21:10.14\00:21:14.92
OK, so we... Dosung, we
see three principles in there.
00:21:15.12\00:21:18.31
What do we see? The Bible says
00:21:18.51\00:21:19.86
"For you have
been... " For by what? Grace
00:21:20.06\00:21:23.55
you have been
saved through faith.
00:21:23.75\00:21:27.10
So those are the three
principles that we're pulling
00:21:27.20\00:21:29.16
out of this text. For by grace
00:21:29.26\00:21:32.43
you have been
saved through faith.
00:21:32.63\00:21:36.09
So I'll just say that again.
Maybe you can get a mental
00:21:36.22\00:21:37.88
picture if I move
back and forth here.
00:21:37.98\00:21:39.55
For by grace you have
been saved through faith.
00:21:39.75\00:21:45.27
That's right. Now
we'll go to our next slide
00:21:45.48\00:21:47.89
which is I Peter
chapter 1 verses 3 through 5.
00:21:47.99\00:21:51.86
Now we're starting in verse 3
so that we can get the context
00:21:52.07\00:21:56.00
that leads us up to verse 5.
00:21:56.20\00:21:58.26
Just this week when I
was doing prayer meeting
00:21:59.94\00:22:02.39
I was at the Lady Lake
Seventh-day Adventist church
00:22:02.59\00:22:04.56
in Lady Lake, Florida.
00:22:04.66\00:22:05.70
And there was a lady
that was reading the passage
00:22:05.90\00:22:09.22
that I asked her to read
but she just kept reading.
00:22:09.32\00:22:12.09
She just kept reading
right after the passage that
00:22:12.29\00:22:15.66
I had asked for her to read.
00:22:15.86\00:22:17.31
And... and I said:
"OK, that's enough. "
00:22:17.51\00:22:18.82
And she says: "No, no, no, no,
no. I want to get the context
00:22:18.93\00:22:21.40
of what I'm reading. "
And so we were very gracious
00:22:21.50\00:22:24.75
and we let her finish
what she needed to do there.
00:22:24.95\00:22:27.00
But so we're starting in
I Peter chapter 1 verse 3,
00:22:27.20\00:22:30.56
Robert, because we
want to get the context
00:22:30.66\00:22:33.43
of what it says in verse
5. So if you'll give me just
00:22:33.53\00:22:36.75
two shakes of a lamb's tail -
00:22:36.85\00:22:38.92
I'm not exactly
sure how long that is,
00:22:39.02\00:22:40.85
but I'd like to get there
with us - so I Peter chapter 1
00:22:41.05\00:22:44.31
beginning in verse 3.
00:22:44.51\00:22:46.70
And if you could
read that for us, Robert?
00:22:46.90\00:22:48.54
"His divine power has
given to us all things
00:22:51.59\00:22:56.09
that pertain to
light and godliness
00:22:56.19\00:23:01.94
through the
knowledge of Him who called us
00:23:02.14\00:23:04.78
by the glory of virtue
00:23:04.98\00:23:09.32
which has been given to us
exceedingly great and precious
00:23:09.55\00:23:15.22
promise. " OK, now, something
has just occurred to me:
00:23:15.42\00:23:18.16
that we are in II
Peter according to your Bible
00:23:18.36\00:23:21.39
but we need to read I
Peter. You were reading II Peter
00:23:21.59\00:23:24.99
chapter 1 verses 3 through 5.
00:23:25.19\00:23:27.36
We need to read I Peter
chapter 1 verses 3 through 5.
00:23:27.56\00:23:30.81
OK. So everybody, maybe you at
home were doing the same thing
00:23:30.84\00:23:33.81
and you got into the wrong verse
so go ahead and flip back over
00:23:34.01\00:23:36.42
to the left and
we'll be there right now.
00:23:36.62\00:23:38.05
Go ahead, Robert.
"Blessed be the God and Father
00:23:38.25\00:23:41.32
of our Lord Jesus Christ
00:23:41.52\00:23:44.14
who according to His abundant
mercy has begotten us again
00:23:44.34\00:23:49.82
to a living hope through
the resurrection of Jesus Christ
00:23:50.02\00:23:53.86
from the dead to an inheritance
00:23:54.06\00:23:59.17
incorruptible and undefiled
00:23:59.37\00:24:02.21
that does not fade away -
reserved in heaven for you
00:24:02.41\00:24:07.14
who are kept by the
power of God through faith
00:24:07.34\00:24:12.78
for salvation ready to be
revealed in the last time. "
00:24:12.98\00:24:18.59
Very nice. Now remember,
Robert, when you're reading
00:24:18.79\00:24:21.26
you want to - I know that
you are struggling with the
00:24:21.36\00:24:23.62
pronunciation of the
words there and that's all right
00:24:23.72\00:24:25.82
because we're all learning
here - but you remember that you
00:24:25.92\00:24:28.34
want to maintain that
eye contact when you're...
00:24:28.54\00:24:31.01
when you're reading. And
so maybe some of you at home
00:24:31.14\00:24:33.61
were able to see... hey, this
guy isn't making eye contact
00:24:33.71\00:24:35.81
as much as he should. And
if that's what you were saying
00:24:36.01\00:24:38.59
that's good... because
you were paying attention.
00:24:38.79\00:24:40.25
And of course Robert... he knows
he's got to look at that camera
00:24:40.45\00:24:43.20
but he's just
struggling a little bit
00:24:43.30\00:24:44.93
with the
pronunciation of the words.
00:24:45.03\00:24:47.75
But let's look at verse 5 again.
00:24:47.85\00:24:49.52
Verse 5 says: "Who are kept
00:24:49.72\00:24:52.61
by the power of
God through faith
00:24:52.81\00:24:56.59
for salvation
ready to be revealed
00:24:56.79\00:25:01.49
in the last time. " So
the scripture says there that
00:25:01.69\00:25:04.66
those people that are ready
for the second coming of Christ
00:25:04.86\00:25:07.66
are kept by
what? The power of God
00:25:07.86\00:25:10.82
unto salvation by their faith.
00:25:11.02\00:25:15.58
Now if you
remember back in Ephesians
00:25:15.78\00:25:18.23
chapter 2 verse 8
we said we are saved by
00:25:18.43\00:25:21.64
grace through... oh,
oh, hang on a second...
00:25:21.84\00:25:24.88
We are saved by grace
00:25:25.08\00:25:28.20
through faith. Feel like
I'm in an exercise program here.
00:25:28.40\00:25:31.75
Isn't that cool?
And then we just read
00:25:31.95\00:25:34.11
in I Peter chapter 1 and verse 5
00:25:34.31\00:25:36.95
"Who are kept by
the... " what? "Power of God"
00:25:37.15\00:25:41.06
then what does it
say? Through what?
00:25:41.16\00:25:43.47
"faith for
salvation. " That's right.
00:25:43.67\00:25:48.01
So we see this parallel
here between faith and...
00:25:48.21\00:25:52.13
well, faith... the
same word was used...
00:25:52.27\00:25:54.69
then salvation
and saved was used
00:25:54.89\00:25:57.35
and then grace and the
power of God were used.
00:25:57.55\00:26:00.56
So we're seeing here
that grace is the power of God
00:26:00.76\00:26:05.03
that saves us through our
faith. That's absolutely right.
00:26:05.24\00:26:10.39
So we'll go to
our third reference
00:26:10.59\00:26:12.48
where we're going to
get these same principles
00:26:12.68\00:26:14.73
that Dosung began to
bring out when we started this
00:26:14.93\00:26:18.17
in Ephesians 2:8.
00:26:18.37\00:26:19.76
So on your screen you'll notice
that we are in the seventh
00:26:19.96\00:26:22.26
Law of God text.
This is Romans 1:16.
00:26:22.36\00:26:25.18
You will mark 7LG. Put a
circle around that turkey.
00:26:25.38\00:26:28.25
On the top of that line you're
going to write I Peter 1:3-5.
00:26:28.45\00:26:31.90
That's just where we came
from. Underneath that line
00:26:32.01\00:26:34.57
you write Titus 2:11,12.
00:26:34.78\00:26:37.49
And then in our next graphic
00:26:37.70\00:26:39.46
we are going to just
recap everything we've done.
00:26:39.66\00:26:42.09
So Ryan, this is you. And
we are in Romans chapter 1.
00:26:42.20\00:26:46.51
Romans is in the
Old or New Testament?
00:26:46.71\00:26:48.26
It's in the New Testament.
Now why don't we do this:
00:26:48.46\00:26:51.71
Ryan, why don't you
help me find this verse.
00:26:51.91\00:26:54.55
Let's just pretend that I
have no clue where Romans is.
00:26:54.75\00:26:58.00
Help me find it.
00:26:58.20\00:26:59.22
In the New Testament it's past
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
00:26:59.42\00:27:03.62
OK, so New Testament.
00:27:03.72\00:27:05.38
It's going to be past
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John,
00:27:05.58\00:27:09.10
Acts and then Romans...
Acts and then Romans, OK.
00:27:09.30\00:27:13.24
I'm still in Acts here. Acts
is a pretty long book, isn't it?
00:27:13.44\00:27:16.49
All right, I'm
there. All right, so
00:27:17.20\00:27:20.23
what verse are we going
to be at here, Ryan? Sixteen.
00:27:20.43\00:27:23.24
Verse 16. So remember that when
you're giving this Bible study
00:27:23.34\00:27:25.59
you may need to help
people get to that reference.
00:27:25.79\00:27:28.32
So go ahead and read
that for us, would you.
00:27:28.52\00:27:30.09
"For I am not ashamed
of the gospel of Christ
00:27:30.29\00:27:32.69
for it is the power
of God unto salvation
00:27:32.89\00:27:35.33
to everyone that believeth...
00:27:35.53\00:27:37.37
to the Jew first
and also to the Greek. "
00:27:37.57\00:27:40.36
Very good eye contact
there on the last part, Ryan.
00:27:40.56\00:27:43.17
So what we see here, it
says: "For I am not ashamed
00:27:43.30\00:27:46.27
of the" what?
"gospel of Christ for it is
00:27:46.37\00:27:48.94
the power of God unto" what?
00:27:49.04\00:27:53.12
salvation "salvation
for everyone who believes. "
00:27:53.32\00:27:58.74
So over here in this area
of our classroom was faith.
00:27:58.94\00:28:04.23
Right here was salvation
or saved, and over here
00:28:04.43\00:28:07.00
we had two things: we had
grace and the power of God.
00:28:07.11\00:28:11.00
Grace is the power of God
00:28:11.20\00:28:15.77
that helps us
overcome through faith.
00:28:15.98\00:28:20.53
Now we've got this
all on the screen here.
00:28:20.74\00:28:24.31
Grace... Ephesians chapter 2
verse 8... we're studying grace
00:28:24.51\00:28:29.13
Ephesians 2 verse 8 says:
"For by grace you have been
00:28:29.33\00:28:31.72
saved through faith.
" I Peter 1:3-5 says:
00:28:31.82\00:28:35.82
"Who are kept by the
power of God unto salvation
00:28:36.02\00:28:39.95
through" what was it?
"faith. " That's right.
00:28:40.15\00:28:42.65
And then Romans 1:16: "I am not
ashamed of the gospel of Christ
00:28:42.85\00:28:45.60
for it is the power
of God unto salvation
00:28:45.80\00:28:50.32
to those that
believe... to the Jew first
00:28:50.42\00:28:52.76
and then also to the"
gentiles or the "Greek. "
00:28:52.96\00:28:54.86
So you see there
grace is the power of God
00:28:55.06\00:28:58.68
that saves those who believe.
00:28:58.88\00:29:03.15
Is that concept clear?
00:29:03.35\00:29:06.12
You've got three texts
where you are simply paralleling
00:29:06.32\00:29:10.15
grace with the power of God
00:29:10.35\00:29:12.24
and then saved in salvation
00:29:12.44\00:29:14.62
and then faith or belief.
00:29:14.82\00:29:16.77
The three principles are in
every one of those references
00:29:16.97\00:29:20.77
showing us that
grace is the power of God
00:29:20.97\00:29:26.01
that saves those who believe.
00:29:26.21\00:29:30.54
Grace is the
power of God that saves
00:29:30.74\00:29:34.43
those who believe.
00:29:34.63\00:29:37.87
Now on your screen there
you see that we are going now to
00:29:38.07\00:29:42.11
Titus chapter 2 verses 11,12.
00:29:42.31\00:29:45.99
So let's go
there. Titus chapter 2
00:29:46.19\00:29:49.52
verses 11 and 12.
00:29:49.73\00:29:53.06
And Titus is in the T
section of the New Testament.
00:29:53.26\00:29:57.20
Titus is in the T
section of the New Testament.
00:29:57.40\00:30:01.23
And the T section is in
what? We've learned this here.
00:30:01.26\00:30:05.09
The T section is in alphabetical
order, that's absolutely right.
00:30:05.29\00:30:08.80
And we're in Titus
chapter 2 verse 11.
00:30:09.00\00:30:14.44
And, Tom, this
is going to be you.
00:30:14.64\00:30:16.65
"For the grace of God that
brings salvation has appeared
00:30:16.85\00:30:21.61
to all men teaching us
that denying ungodliness
00:30:21.81\00:30:26.65
and worldly lusts
we should live soberly,
00:30:26.85\00:30:30.37
righteously, and
godly in the present age. "
00:30:30.57\00:30:33.69
So grace... grace has
appeared to how many people?
00:30:33.89\00:30:38.08
All people. The Bible says there
00:30:39.12\00:30:41.97
"For the grace of
God that brings salvation
00:30:42.17\00:30:46.44
has appeared to all men. "
What does grace bring to us?
00:30:46.64\00:30:50.79
Salvation. And how many
people did it appear to?
00:30:51.19\00:30:54.04
All men... that's right.
00:30:54.25\00:30:55.96
"For the grace of God that
brings salvation has appeared
00:30:56.16\00:30:58.46
to all men teaching us. "
00:30:58.56\00:31:01.75
What does the teaching? Grace.
00:31:01.95\00:31:05.86
"Teaching us that
denying ungodliness
00:31:06.06\00:31:11.81
and worldly lusts... "
00:31:11.91\00:31:13.72
What is
ungodliness and worldly lusts?
00:31:13.87\00:31:16.08
Sin. That's absolutely right.
00:31:16.28\00:31:18.60
"Teaching us that denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts
00:31:18.80\00:31:24.58
we should live
soberly, righteously,
00:31:24.68\00:31:29.08
and godly in the present age. "
00:31:29.28\00:31:33.36
Now your version, Tom,
said "in this present world"
00:31:33.56\00:31:37.17
isn't that right? Is
that what your version said?
00:31:37.27\00:31:39.45
No, it says present age
as well. Does somebody have
00:31:39.65\00:31:41.78
the old King James
version? What does that say?
00:31:41.98\00:31:44.58
"In this present world. "
00:31:44.78\00:31:47.48
So God supplies
Jesus who is full of grace.
00:31:47.68\00:31:53.38
Jesus who is full
of grace supplies us
00:31:53.58\00:31:57.52
with His power
so that we can learn
00:31:57.72\00:32:01.51
because the Bible says
that grace "teaches us, "
00:32:01.72\00:32:04.68
doesn't it? That means
it is a learning process.
00:32:04.78\00:32:08.29
It's a learning process. We call
that sanctification, don't we?
00:32:08.49\00:32:12.50
We call that sanctification.
00:32:12.60\00:32:14.06
That's the
process of a lifetime.
00:32:14.17\00:32:16.24
Grace that has
appeared to all men
00:32:16.44\00:32:19.97
that brings us
salvation teaches us
00:32:20.17\00:32:24.15
to deny
ungodliness and worldly lusts.
00:32:24.35\00:32:28.71
Have you ever
thought to yourself: "Man,
00:32:30.32\00:32:32.79
I'm sick of
struggling with this thing.
00:32:33.00\00:32:36.06
I'm tired of struggling
with this issue in my life.
00:32:36.26\00:32:39.16
I want to get freedom from
this issue that is in my life. "
00:32:39.36\00:32:43.87
The Bible says in
I Corinthians 15:57
00:32:44.10\00:32:47.02
that we can have
victory through Jesus Christ.
00:32:47.22\00:32:51.14
We can have victory
through Jesus Christ.
00:32:51.34\00:32:54.08
So grace teaches us two
things: to deny ungodliness
00:32:54.28\00:32:58.93
and worldly lusts.
00:32:59.13\00:33:00.55
Now when you are giving
this Bible study to someone
00:33:00.75\00:33:03.37
you want to be very
interactive with that person.
00:33:03.47\00:33:07.10
Be very
interactive with that person.
00:33:07.13\00:33:09.23
So when you're reading
there in Titus chapter 2
00:33:09.43\00:33:12.59
it says: "for the grace
of God that brings salvation"
00:33:12.79\00:33:15.77
you would ask that person:
00:33:15.97\00:33:17.35
"What is it that
brings salvation? "
00:33:17.55\00:33:19.70
And the answer would
be? Grace, that's right.
00:33:19.91\00:33:22.75
The grace of God. "For the grace
of God that brings salvation
00:33:22.85\00:33:25.16
has appeared to all men. "
00:33:25.36\00:33:27.39
And so you would
simply say, Bill:
00:33:27.59\00:33:28.80
"How many men did the
grace of God appear to? "
00:33:28.90\00:33:31.14
All men. That's
absolutely right.
00:33:31.34\00:33:33.42
"Teaching us... "
And just like I asked you
00:33:33.62\00:33:36.84
when you're giving this
Bible study, you ask this person
00:33:37.04\00:33:39.84
that you're studying with:
"What is doing the teaching? "
00:33:39.95\00:33:43.83
The grace of God.
That's absolutely right.
00:33:45.22\00:33:47.38
It is the grace of God
that is doing the teaching
00:33:47.58\00:33:49.83
and it is teaching us
to do two things. What?
00:33:50.03\00:33:53.07
Or to not do two things.
00:33:53.37\00:33:55.79
It's teaching us to deny
ungodliness and worldly lusts
00:33:56.87\00:34:00.15
and it is
teaching us to do what?
00:34:00.35\00:34:02.84
Live soberly,
righteously, and godly... when?
00:34:03.04\00:34:07.53
In this present age.
00:34:07.74\00:34:08.74
Are you sure that doesn't
mean at the second coming?
00:34:09.29\00:34:13.32
What makes you so sure, Mike?
00:34:15.00\00:34:17.45
Because it says "in
this present world. "
00:34:17.85\00:34:20.96
That's absolutely right.
00:34:21.17\00:34:22.41
Don't ever let
anyone tell you, my friends,
00:34:22.61\00:34:25.24
that God cannot
give you the power
00:34:25.44\00:34:27.61
to overcome your struggles.
00:34:27.71\00:34:29.42
You may be struggling with some-
thing in your life right now.
00:34:29.72\00:34:33.15
Notice this. This text
isn't in our Bible study, but
00:34:33.36\00:34:36.72
let's go to it anyway. Let's
go to Philippians chapter 4...
00:34:36.92\00:34:39.67
Philippians chapter 4.
So we are in Timothy...
00:34:39.87\00:34:43.61
I'll help us all find
it. We'll turn to the left
00:34:43.81\00:34:46.03
from Timothy. So we're going to
00:34:46.23\00:34:47.94
turn to the left to the book of
00:34:48.04\00:34:49.55
Philippians.
00:34:49.65\00:34:50.86
Philippians chapter 4
00:34:51.07\00:34:52.79
and verse 19.
00:34:52.99\00:34:54.29
Not 19 but verse 13.
00:34:54.50\00:34:56.59
Philippians chapter 4 verse 13.
00:34:57.62\00:34:59.35
For the person that is
struggling with the sin
00:34:59.45\00:35:02.76
in their life... for the person
that just doesn't feel like
00:35:02.86\00:35:06.97
they can overcome
even though they have Jesus
00:35:07.17\00:35:10.24
who is the power of
God in their life...
00:35:10.44\00:35:13.04
this is what the Bible
says in Philippians chapter 4
00:35:13.24\00:35:17.30
and verse 13. It says:
00:35:17.50\00:35:20.00
"I can do all
things through Christ
00:35:20.20\00:35:23.91
who strengthens me. "
00:35:24.01\00:35:25.95
How many things can you do
00:35:26.25\00:35:27.87
through Christ
that gives you strength?
00:35:28.07\00:35:30.26
That's right. You can do
ALL THINGS through Christ.
00:35:30.47\00:35:33.63
How is it that you can do
all things through Christ?
00:35:33.83\00:35:36.41
You can do all things through
Christ because of what, Mike?
00:35:36.61\00:35:40.17
Because He's the One
that gives us strength.
00:35:40.37\00:35:42.73
So when we ask Jesus into
our lives, what does He bring
00:35:42.83\00:35:45.26
with Him? He brings power.
See... we'll that's not too big.
00:35:45.36\00:35:48.47
But He brings power, doesn't He?
00:35:48.68\00:35:50.98
And we need that power.
00:35:51.18\00:35:53.26
One of our cameramen
is over there flexing
00:35:53.36\00:35:54.85
and I think that's
hilarious because I beat him...
00:35:54.95\00:35:56.85
I beat him in arm
wrestling the other day.
00:35:57.15\00:35:59.08
Yeah! So when... if
any of us are struggling
00:35:59.28\00:36:03.85
with something in our
life, my friends, we need Jesus
00:36:04.05\00:36:08.97
don't we. Because
Jesus brings with Him grace
00:36:09.07\00:36:13.84
or POWER. That's
absolutely right.
00:36:14.04\00:36:18.40
The power... not just any
power. That's right, Mike.
00:36:18.80\00:36:21.87
He brings the power of God.
00:36:22.08\00:36:25.33
So Titus tells us that the
grace of God is going to help us
00:36:25.63\00:36:31.59
overcome. Now when
you're giving this Bible study
00:36:31.69\00:36:33.43
you need to
help people overcome.
00:36:33.63\00:36:35.57
At this point, Robert,
somebody may be saying to you
00:36:35.77\00:36:38.04
"But Robert, you don't know
what's going on in my life. "
00:36:38.24\00:36:40.48
And it's... people
will say that to you.
00:36:41.98\00:36:44.83
And you say: "You
know, it doesn't matter
00:36:45.03\00:36:46.90
whether I know what's
going on in your life or not
00:36:47.10\00:36:49.57
Jesus knows what's
going on in your life.
00:36:49.87\00:36:53.00
and Jesus will
help you overcome it.
00:36:53.21\00:36:55.35
Let's look at one more promise.
00:36:55.65\00:36:57.67
You want to see one more
promise to help us overcome?
00:36:57.87\00:37:00.14
You want to see one more?
All right, let's do that then.
00:37:00.34\00:37:02.20
And again, this isn't in
your study so just take this
00:37:02.40\00:37:04.60
for what it's worth... which
is a lot when you're struggling
00:37:04.70\00:37:07.63
with something. Let's
go to Matthew chapter 19.
00:37:07.73\00:37:10.97
Matthew. Going to
Matthew chapter 19
00:37:12.37\00:37:17.29
and verse 26.
00:37:18.84\00:37:23.48
Jesus has just finished
talking to the disciples here
00:37:23.68\00:37:26.44
in Matthew chapter 19. Well,
let's read verse 23 as well.
00:37:26.54\00:37:30.04
Matthew chapter 19 verse 23
00:37:30.24\00:37:32.33
and you guys at home see if I
give you some good eye contact
00:37:32.53\00:37:34.78
on this, all
right? Now you in class,
00:37:34.98\00:37:36.87
you can be the judge as well.
00:37:37.07\00:37:38.45
"Then Jesus said
to His disciples:
00:37:38.68\00:37:40.75
'assuredly I say to you
that it is hard for a rich man
00:37:40.95\00:37:45.28
to enter the kingdom of heaven.
00:37:45.48\00:37:47.45
And again I say
to you it is easier
00:37:47.65\00:37:50.49
for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle
00:37:50.70\00:37:53.39
than for a rich man to
enter the kingdom of God. ' "
00:37:53.59\00:37:57.52
So Jesus here is talking
about salvation, isn't He?
00:37:57.72\00:38:01.07
Specifically He's talking...
in this, when He's speaking here
00:38:01.27\00:38:04.42
to the disciples,
to His followers...
00:38:04.62\00:38:06.26
He's specifically talking about
a rich man and how difficult
00:38:06.29\00:38:09.79
it is. And you
know, I'm not rich
00:38:09.89\00:38:12.80
so I don't know what
makes the struggle different
00:38:13.00\00:38:15.98
unless you just are so
comfortable that you don't
00:38:16.18\00:38:18.42
feel that you have a need.
But Jesus says here it's hard
00:38:18.52\00:38:21.91
for this rich
person to be saved.
00:38:22.11\00:38:23.75
But notice what His
disciples said in verse 25.
00:38:23.88\00:38:26.32
"His disciples when they heard
it they were greatly astonished
00:38:26.52\00:38:30.63
saying: 'Who
then can be saved? ' "
00:38:30.73\00:38:34.55
"Who then can be saved? "
00:38:35.05\00:38:36.87
And you and I could
ask the same question.
00:38:36.97\00:38:38.39
We could ask: "How is
it that I can be saved
00:38:38.59\00:38:42.02
because I know how
dreadfully sinful I am. "
00:38:42.22\00:38:45.48
And here's the
promise, verse 26:
00:38:45.61\00:38:48.40
"But Jesus looked at
them and said to them:
00:38:48.60\00:38:51.34
'With men this
is impossible. ' "
00:38:51.54\00:38:55.40
But then what does He say?
00:38:55.60\00:38:57.65
"But with God all
things are possible. "
00:38:57.85\00:39:03.38
Is it too
impossible for those of us
00:39:04.40\00:39:09.24
that have accepted Jesus to
overcome what we are struggling
00:39:09.44\00:39:14.01
with in our life?
00:39:14.11\00:39:15.69
Now these are promises
that you want to write down.
00:39:15.89\00:39:18.64
You will use these
promises time and time again.
00:39:18.84\00:39:23.46
If any of you ever went
visiting with me - and you will
00:39:23.66\00:39:26.19
be able to do that
by the grace of God -
00:39:26.30\00:39:28.03
during Pastor
Sizemore's evangelistic meetings
00:39:28.13\00:39:30.29
beginning on November the
7th at the Leesburg Church...
00:39:30.39\00:39:33.61
If you go visiting with us,
00:39:33.91\00:39:36.76
you will hear us use
many of the same texts
00:39:36.96\00:39:40.26
over and over again. And
the reason that we do that...
00:39:40.46\00:39:44.24
well, not only because we're
familiar with them but they're
00:39:44.44\00:39:46.94
very, very potent texts.
00:39:47.04\00:39:49.87
They really give that person
that you're studying with hope.
00:39:50.07\00:39:53.15
They give that
person that's coming to your
00:39:53.35\00:39:54.78
evangelistic meeting
hope because God will give us
00:39:54.88\00:39:58.51
the strength to overcome.
00:39:58.61\00:40:00.86
Any questions on
our study so far?
00:40:01.16\00:40:04.33
We've gone over Jesus.
00:40:04.53\00:40:06.66
Jesus is the power of God.
00:40:06.86\00:40:10.24
Jesus is full of grace.
00:40:10.45\00:40:12.49
Jesus is the One
that can help us overcome,
00:40:12.69\00:40:15.59
and He gives us that
grace - which is His power -
00:40:15.79\00:40:18.84
to overcome. Any questions
on what we've covered so far?
00:40:19.04\00:40:21.68
All right. Everybody
seems pretty clear about that.
00:40:23.12\00:40:25.01
Let's go to our...
let's go to our next slide.
00:40:25.11\00:40:28.31
Our next slide - our next
reference that we are going to
00:40:28.41\00:40:32.46
go to is I John
chapter 3 and verse 4.
00:40:32.56\00:40:36.49
Because we're teaching
here, we're in a learning...
00:40:36.69\00:40:39.61
a learning arena, the
people that are taking the video
00:40:39.82\00:40:43.61
are right now going to have
to jump several slides forward
00:40:43.71\00:40:47.01
in their presentation.
So what we're going to do is
00:40:47.21\00:40:49.88
we're going to go to I
John chapter 3 verse 4.
00:40:50.08\00:40:52.56
We are going to
begin to look at sin.
00:40:52.76\00:40:55.78
We're going to look at sin.
I John chapter 3 and verse 4.
00:40:55.98\00:41:01.23
So let's go there.
I John chapter 3...
00:41:01.43\00:41:04.59
Can anybody help me find I John?
00:41:04.79\00:41:06.63
Can somebody
help me find I John?
00:41:06.74\00:41:08.33
Where's your microphone
at? Where's that microphone at?
00:41:08.53\00:41:10.64
OK. Mrs. Gloria,
help me find I John.
00:41:10.74\00:41:13.09
How do I get there?
Well this is the second...
00:41:13.29\00:41:16.51
Hold that just a little closer
to your mouth. There you are!
00:41:16.61\00:41:17.92
OK. We were just in
Philippians. Go to the right.
00:41:18.13\00:41:20.70
OK, I'm turning to the
right from Philippians.
00:41:20.90\00:41:22.91
And then we have...
00:41:23.11\00:41:28.08
the Peters and then the Johns.
00:41:28.29\00:41:30.65
I've gotten to Revelation.
Where do I need to go now?
00:41:30.75\00:41:32.82
Go back. Yeah, go
left to... Got to go left
00:41:32.92\00:41:35.38
from Revelation. Closer to
Revelation or closer to John
00:41:35.48\00:41:37.58
where we were?
Closer to Revelation.
00:41:37.78\00:41:41.42
Closer to Revelation.
00:41:41.62\00:41:43.25
OK. And, oh, I see III John
so I guess it's probably - yes -
00:41:43.45\00:41:47.72
to the left of
that. It's I John.
00:41:47.82\00:41:48.96
All right. I John chapter 3
and what verse are we going to?
00:41:49.16\00:41:54.59
Verse 4. Verse 4. OK,
can you read that for us?
00:41:54.80\00:41:58.17
Verse 4: "Whoever commits sin
00:41:59.59\00:42:04.77
also commits lawlessness
and sin is lawlessness. "
00:42:04.97\00:42:10.73
OK. So what we've
done so far in our study
00:42:10.93\00:42:12.96
we talked about Jesus.
00:42:13.16\00:42:14.64
We talked about grace
and what grace can do for us.
00:42:14.84\00:42:17.90
And now we've made a transition
over to here and we're talking
00:42:18.10\00:42:20.77
about what? We're
talking about sin.
00:42:20.88\00:42:24.04
Now there are three
definitions of sin in scripture
00:42:24.24\00:42:28.45
that I'm aware of.
Now you may know more
00:42:28.65\00:42:30.88
and if so just blurt those
out and we'll talk about them.
00:42:31.08\00:42:34.03
But the Bible says in James 4:17
00:42:34.23\00:42:37.10
It says: "If any man knows
to do good and does it not,
00:42:37.30\00:42:42.00
to him it is sin. "
00:42:42.10\00:42:44.32
Then in Romans, I
believe it's Romans chapter 14,
00:42:44.52\00:42:47.64
in the very last verse, and
I hope I'm quoting the Bible
00:42:47.84\00:42:51.99
correctly here. It's in
the last verse of Romans 14.
00:42:52.19\00:42:54.75
It says: "For whatsoever
is not of faith is sin. "
00:42:54.95\00:43:00.67
And then the third definition
is the definition that we see
00:43:00.87\00:43:03.77
right here. The
Bible tells us that sin
00:43:03.87\00:43:07.91
is the
transgression of God's law.
00:43:08.11\00:43:12.23
Sin is the
transgression of God's law.
00:43:13.67\00:43:16.97
Now, Mrs. Gloria, your version
said that sin is lawlessness.
00:43:17.18\00:43:21.95
Sin is living your
life without regard
00:43:22.15\00:43:25.81
to the law of God.
00:43:26.01\00:43:28.24
So there's a logical question
00:43:28.64\00:43:31.66
that we will
want to ask ourselves.
00:43:31.86\00:43:33.60
And that logical
question is this:
00:43:33.70\00:43:35.77
If sin - over here - if sin
00:43:35.97\00:43:39.09
is the
transgression of God's law,
00:43:39.29\00:43:42.89
then exactly which
law are we talking about?
00:43:44.26\00:43:48.84
Well in I John it didn't
say God's law. It just said
00:43:49.04\00:43:51.21
"sin is the
transgression of the law. "
00:43:51.31\00:43:53.19
And because we are
thinking Bible students,
00:43:53.39\00:43:55.89
because we want Biblical
answers to our questions,
00:43:56.09\00:43:58.97
we're going to ask
this question: what law
00:43:59.07\00:44:01.99
is John talking about when he
says "sin is the transgression
00:44:02.19\00:44:07.53
of God's law? "
00:44:07.73\00:44:10.38
So in order to get that
we are going to go to our -
00:44:10.41\00:44:13.68
I believe it would
be our tenth text -
00:44:13.78\00:44:17.25
And our tenth text - we'll have
that graphic up on the screen
00:44:17.45\00:44:19.93
for you in just a
moment - our tenth text
00:44:20.03\00:44:22.26
is Romans chapter 7 verse 7.
00:44:22.46\00:44:26.61
And I'm going to ask my
cameraman that's getting that
00:44:26.71\00:44:28.63
shot of people's faces to just
move out of the way so I can
00:44:28.73\00:44:31.55
catch my computer up
to where I need to be.
00:44:31.65\00:44:34.17
So he's just going to
move around a little bit
00:44:34.37\00:44:36.96
and those of you at home
you just enjoy being at class
00:44:37.06\00:44:39.40
with us here. We're
glad you're here with us.
00:44:39.50\00:44:41.33
And Jessica is going to
read for us Romans chapter 7
00:44:41.53\00:44:45.78
verse 7.
00:44:45.88\00:44:49.57
Romans chapter 7 verse 7.
00:44:49.78\00:44:54.25
Very nice. And you want
to read that for us now?
00:44:54.45\00:44:57.12
Now go ahead and pick
that Bible up off of your...
00:44:57.32\00:44:59.84
off of your table there.
And you're going to give the
00:45:00.04\00:45:02.64
cameraman some eye
contact. So you look right here
00:45:02.74\00:45:05.66
into this camera and you're
going to be looking at people
00:45:05.76\00:45:07.87
at home. And they're going
to be judging whether or not
00:45:07.97\00:45:09.38
you've got that eye contact
that engages them in that study.
00:45:09.48\00:45:12.81
"Well then, am I suggesting
that the law of God is evil?
00:45:13.02\00:45:18.37
Of course not.
The law is not sinful
00:45:18.57\00:45:22.56
but it was the law
that showed me my sin.
00:45:22.76\00:45:25.91
I would never have
known that coveting is wrong
00:45:26.11\00:45:29.61
if the law had not
said 'do not covet. ' "
00:45:29.81\00:45:32.97
OK, so in Romans
chapter 7 verse 7
00:45:33.17\00:45:36.83
it... Paul says: "I
would not have known sin
00:45:37.03\00:45:40.96
but by the law. " And I
was busy moving my slides
00:45:41.16\00:45:45.74
here, so I'm just going to
get here. Romans 7 verse 7.
00:45:45.84\00:45:48.09
"What shall we say
then? Is the law sin? "
00:45:48.29\00:45:51.91
What is Paul's answer
according to this verse?
00:45:52.11\00:45:55.99
Is the law sin?
00:45:56.19\00:45:58.03
God forbid. Certainly
not. Bill hollered out "No! "
00:45:58.24\00:46:03.41
Yes, Bill. Good
for you, brother.
00:46:03.61\00:46:05.35
What shall we say then? Is the
00:46:05.55\00:46:07.08
law sin? Certainly not!
00:46:07.18\00:46:10.60
On the contrary,
00:46:10.80\00:46:13.21
I would not have known sin
00:46:13.41\00:46:16.28
except through the
what? Through the law.
00:46:16.48\00:46:20.20
Well we still haven't
answered what law yet, have we,
00:46:20.40\00:46:23.04
in this verse.
So just keep reading
00:46:23.15\00:46:25.29
because the reason we're going
to this verse is to show the law
00:46:25.49\00:46:29.67
that if we transgress we sin.
00:46:29.87\00:46:34.22
It says there: "For I would
not have known covetousness
00:46:34.42\00:46:39.12
unless the law had said
'you shall not covet. ' "
00:46:39.42\00:46:45.41
"I would not have known
sin except the law had said
00:46:46.64\00:46:49.16
'you shall not
covet. ' " So which law...
00:46:49.37\00:46:52.53
Mrs. Gloria, tell me:
which law is it that says
00:46:52.73\00:46:57.28
"You shall not covet? "
00:46:57.48\00:46:59.76
The Ten Commandments. It
was the Ten Commandment law,
00:46:59.96\00:47:04.05
isn't it? It's the Ten
Commandment law that says
00:47:04.26\00:47:06.82
"You shall not covet. "
00:47:07.02\00:47:08.04
So Paul says that we can know
the definition of transgression
00:47:08.24\00:47:11.93
or of breaking the law...
We can know the definition of
00:47:12.13\00:47:15.06
the law simply by
finding the law that says
00:47:15.26\00:47:18.86
"Thou shalt not covet. "
00:47:19.06\00:47:20.38
And because Mrs. Gloria has been
studying the Bible for years
00:47:20.58\00:47:23.48
she knows that the law
that says "Thou shalt not covet"
00:47:23.51\00:47:26.54
is the Ten
Commandment moral law of God.
00:47:26.74\00:47:29.82
Would you like
to look at that law?
00:47:30.02\00:47:31.56
You want to look at that law?
00:47:31.76\00:47:33.37
Shelleta said: "Yes! " I
like all those S's there.
00:47:33.57\00:47:36.28
We'll get there,
but not right now.
00:47:36.48\00:47:37.97
We're going to look
at it, but not right now.
00:47:38.18\00:47:39.86
Go... you still have
the microphone there.
00:47:41.23\00:47:43.37
Read for us verse 12:
Romans chapter 7 verse 12
00:47:43.57\00:47:46.66
because we have two texts here.
We want to firmly establish
00:47:46.86\00:47:51.04
that the law is not sin.
00:47:51.24\00:47:53.74
Paul has already
said: "Certainly not! "
00:47:53.94\00:47:55.54
What does he say in
verse 12 there, Jessica?
00:47:55.65\00:47:58.36
"But still the law itself
is holy and right and good. "
00:47:59.09\00:48:04.70
So the law is what? It is holy;
00:48:04.93\00:48:07.03
it is right; and it is good.
00:48:07.23\00:48:11.05
Isn't that amazing that Jesus is
00:48:11.25\00:48:14.06
holy, He is righteous,
and He is the only good Man
00:48:14.26\00:48:20.25
that ever walked on
the face of this planet.
00:48:20.35\00:48:22.59
Romans chapter 3 tells
us that none of us are good.
00:48:22.79\00:48:25.71
But of course Jesus -
who never sinned - is good.
00:48:25.91\00:48:29.90
So the law reflects the
character of Christ then,
00:48:30.00\00:48:32.17
doesn't it? Isn't that cool?
00:48:32.37\00:48:34.05
So what then is it?
We know what sin is now.
00:48:34.35\00:48:38.03
We know that sin is the
transgression or the living
00:48:38.23\00:48:42.20
our life apart from God's law.
00:48:42.30\00:48:45.18
What is it that sin does
00:48:45.48\00:48:49.40
to our relationship with Jesus?
00:48:49.61\00:48:53.14
Separates us. Now I
hear you say separate us, but
00:48:54.98\00:48:57.74
because we are
studying the Bible with people
00:48:57.94\00:49:00.30
You may be studying the
Bible with people that have been
00:49:00.50\00:49:02.11
studying for years and you say
00:49:02.22\00:49:03.82
"What does sin do to
our relationship with God? "
00:49:04.02\00:49:06.00
and just like here at the
Lay Institute for Evangelism
00:49:06.10\00:49:08.23
you guys said: "separates us. "
00:49:08.43\00:49:11.53
But do you know a
reference that tells us that?
00:49:11.73\00:49:14.37
Isaiah 59. Well look
there: it's our next reference
00:49:14.57\00:49:18.92
on our slide, isn't it? All
right, the 11th Law of God text
00:49:19.03\00:49:22.91
is Isaiah 59 verses 1 and 2.
00:49:23.01\00:49:27.24
So I'll just go ahead and
get there and then Vanessa,
00:49:27.34\00:49:30.47
you can read that for us.
00:49:30.57\00:49:32.01
Isaiah... Why don't you help
me find Isaiah. Do that for us.
00:49:32.21\00:49:34.97
Help me find Isaiah.
00:49:35.17\00:49:36.25
Where do I go to find Isaiah?
00:49:36.45\00:49:37.97
Middle of the Bible. OK, let's
see... middle of the Bible.
00:49:39.41\00:49:43.43
I'm in Proverbs.
00:49:43.63\00:49:45.38
OK. Do I go to the left
or the right from Proverbs?
00:49:45.58\00:49:47.90
I go to the right. Why
don't you grab that microphone
00:49:48.10\00:49:50.68
and put that up there so
the people at home can...
00:49:50.88\00:49:52.97
can be helped as well.
00:49:53.17\00:49:54.77
So we're going to the
left or right from Proverbs?
00:49:54.98\00:49:57.29
To the right. And which
reference am I going to?
00:49:57.32\00:50:00.72
Isaiah 59. Isaiah 59.
00:50:00.93\00:50:04.28
Now when you're
giving Bible studies...
00:50:04.48\00:50:06.36
Let's suppose you're
giving Bible studies to a...
00:50:06.46\00:50:08.72
a mother that has two toddlers.
00:50:08.92\00:50:11.56
I don't know if you've
ever been in a home that has
00:50:11.76\00:50:13.73
two toddlers all at one.
But for the person that doesn't
00:50:13.83\00:50:17.25
have kids they may go into
that home and they may think
00:50:17.35\00:50:19.59
"Oh, this is useless. "
00:50:19.79\00:50:21.20
"How in the world am I
going to give a Bible study
00:50:21.40\00:50:23.41
in this environment? "
00:50:23.51\00:50:24.63
Well you need to get past
that if you don't have kids.
00:50:24.83\00:50:26.73
You know we had some
people at our house last night
00:50:26.93\00:50:28.69
and they said: "Oh, man,
your kids are just going crazy
00:50:28.89\00:50:31.77
in the house. " And I
was thinking: "You know,
00:50:31.88\00:50:33.07
I didn't know they
were going crazy. "
00:50:33.27\00:50:34.80
I mean they were a little
loud but for me... You know,
00:50:34.90\00:50:37.21
parents can tune things out.
So if you're giving this Bible
00:50:37.31\00:50:39.45
study to a parent that
has a couple of kids in there,
00:50:39.55\00:50:42.55
that parent... understand
that parent has the ability to
00:50:42.75\00:50:45.31
tune their kids
out to a certain degree
00:50:45.41\00:50:46.94
until the yells that their
kids are giving get to a certain
00:50:47.14\00:50:49.74
decibel and then you know the
kid is hurt. Isn't that right?
00:50:49.84\00:50:51.87
That's exactly right.
00:50:51.97\00:50:53.22
And so if you're giving
this text to a mother that's
00:50:53.43\00:50:56.21
taking care of a couple of kids
at the same time you're giving
00:50:56.41\00:50:58.85
the Bible study, you'll
need to make sure, Vanessa,
00:50:58.95\00:51:01.06
that you are repeating
those texts. Repeat those texts.
00:51:01.16\00:51:04.42
So where are we going again,
Vanessa. Where are we going?
00:51:04.52\00:51:06.64
Isaiah 59. Isaiah 59.
00:51:07.04\00:51:09.76
And, oh, I'm sorry.
What reference is that again?
00:51:09.96\00:51:12.36
Verses 1 and 2. Verses 1... OK.
00:51:12.56\00:51:14.47
Good job, Vanessa. You passed!
00:51:14.67\00:51:16.42
You're passed...
you've passed. All right.
00:51:16.62\00:51:18.50
Let's read that. OK.
"Behold, the Lord's hand is
00:51:18.70\00:51:22.08
not shortened
that it cannot save
00:51:22.28\00:51:25.27
neither His ear heavy
that it cannot hear. "
00:51:25.47\00:51:28.34
OK, stop right there.
00:51:28.54\00:51:30.40
Let's not read
verse 2 quite yet.
00:51:30.60\00:51:32.72
You remember in the
first week here we discussed
00:51:32.92\00:51:36.53
three questions
that we needed to ask
00:51:36.73\00:51:39.89
when we are reading verses.
00:51:39.99\00:51:41.42
Do you remember what
those three questions were?
00:51:41.63\00:51:44.01
What? Why? So what?
00:51:44.21\00:51:48.76
What? Why? and So what?
00:51:49.06\00:51:50.86
So this text right
here if we ask the question
00:51:51.07\00:51:53.88
"What did this text say? "
00:51:54.08\00:51:56.40
what would this text show us?
00:51:56.60\00:51:58.44
Vanessa, what
would this text show us?
00:51:58.74\00:52:01.68
There's two things there.
00:52:01.88\00:52:02.91
All you've got to
do is read it again.
00:52:03.11\00:52:04.63
Just look at it
right now and read it again
00:52:04.83\00:52:07.11
and then you'll see the
first one. Start reading.
00:52:07.21\00:52:08.88
Out loud? Out
loud. Yeah, that's right.
00:52:09.08\00:52:11.57
We can't hear you if
you don't read out loud.
00:52:11.77\00:52:13.84
"Behold, the Lord's
hand is not shortened
00:52:14.05\00:52:17.67
that He cannot save... "
00:52:17.70\00:52:19.78
OK. What's the first thing
we learned right there, Vanessa?
00:52:19.88\00:52:22.57
That His hand is not shortened.
00:52:22.77\00:52:24.65
That it what?
"Behold, the Lord's hand is
00:52:24.85\00:52:28.40
not shortened that He
cannot save. " Save us.
00:52:28.60\00:52:31.93
So the Lord does not have an arm
that is too short to reach down
00:52:32.03\00:52:34.93
and grab anyone.
00:52:35.03\00:52:36.81
No matter how far we have
gone God's hand is not too short
00:52:37.01\00:52:41.59
to reach to where we
are and to pick us up.
00:52:41.79\00:52:44.97
And then what does it say?
00:52:45.18\00:52:46.51
What's the second thing
that we learned in that text?
00:52:46.61\00:52:48.39
We're asking what. What's
the second thing we learned
00:52:48.49\00:52:51.03
in that text? Go
ahead and read it.
00:52:51.13\00:52:54.63
Just read the rest of the text.
00:52:54.83\00:52:56.08
On verses 1 or 2? Verse
1. Read the rest of verse 1.
00:52:56.28\00:53:00.64
You're right, you're right.
Sorry. I could be more clear.
00:53:00.85\00:53:02.33
"Neither His ear
heavy that it cannot hear. "
00:53:02.53\00:53:06.37
OK. So is God's ear too heavy
00:53:06.57\00:53:09.57
that God cannot hear
us when we cry out to Him?
00:53:09.77\00:53:12.94
No. You remember
in Philippians 4:13,
00:53:13.15\00:53:16.63
the text we read earlier,
it said: "I can do all things
00:53:16.83\00:53:19.54
through Christ
that strengthens me. "
00:53:19.74\00:53:21.09
Then we were in Matthew 19:26.
He says: "With men this is
00:53:21.29\00:53:24.55
impossible but with God
all things are possible. "
00:53:24.65\00:53:27.67
So God's hand is not too
short that He can't reach out
00:53:29.01\00:53:31.94
and get you where you are
00:53:32.04\00:53:33.52
when you call to Him
and pull you out of it.
00:53:33.72\00:53:36.63
"Nor is His ear too heavy. "
00:53:36.83\00:53:39.01
You know, we're here in Florida
00:53:39.41\00:53:41.62
and those of you that
are in Florida watching
00:53:41.83\00:53:43.79
you'll have to forgive me
for this... "But neither is His
00:53:43.99\00:53:45.91
hearing aid too dull to
hear what you are saying. "
00:53:46.01\00:53:51.05
When that person cries
out for God to save him
00:53:52.26\00:53:55.02
God will save him.
00:53:55.22\00:53:56.86
But if we live our live
rebelliously against God
00:53:57.06\00:54:02.02
we'll get to a point where
sin doesn't even seem sinful
00:54:03.33\00:54:06.11
any more. And if sin
doesn't seem sinful, then we're
00:54:06.21\00:54:09.18
not going to ask
forgiveness for it.
00:54:09.28\00:54:10.90
Read verse 2 for us, Vanessa.
You were doing a great job.
00:54:11.10\00:54:14.38
You're doing a great job.
00:54:14.58\00:54:16.22
"But your iniquities
have separated between you
00:54:16.42\00:54:20.09
and your God and your
sins have hid His face from you
00:54:20.19\00:54:24.73
that He will not hear. "
00:54:24.93\00:54:27.24
So what does our
iniquity or our sin do
00:54:27.44\00:54:31.17
with our relationship to God?
00:54:31.37\00:54:33.20
It separates us. Now
we have Biblical reference
00:54:33.40\00:54:37.46
for what we said
just a moment ago.
00:54:37.66\00:54:40.49
It says there: "Your
iniquities have separated you
00:54:40.69\00:54:45.68
from God. " "Your iniquities
have separated you from God
00:54:45.88\00:54:50.61
and your sins have
hidden His face from you
00:54:50.81\00:54:54.57
so that He will not hear. "
00:54:54.77\00:54:58.57
I don't know for you, but for me
00:55:00.69\00:55:03.17
I don't want to get to the point
where God will not hear me.
00:55:05.96\00:55:09.64
I want to stay
so far away from sin
00:55:10.04\00:55:13.88
that I'm just
sandwiched up against the rock
00:55:14.08\00:55:15.96
that I slammed into
when I was converted.
00:55:16.16\00:55:18.82
I want to be as far away from
that sin as I can possibly get.
00:55:18.83\00:55:23.11
So this is what we've learned
so far in our Bible study.
00:55:24.40\00:55:28.51
We have learned
that Jesus is the source
00:55:28.64\00:55:32.80
or the Author of what? Grace.
00:55:33.00\00:55:36.85
Say it loud. He's
the Author of... grace.
00:55:37.06\00:55:40.02
That's right. And
grace is the power of God
00:55:40.12\00:55:44.71
that helps us
overcome sin. That's right.
00:55:44.91\00:55:48.87
And on the
screen you'll see here
00:55:48.97\00:55:50.79
we went to I John 3:4 to show
that sin is the transgression
00:55:50.99\00:55:54.49
of the law. We
went to Romans 7:7,12
00:55:54.59\00:55:57.89
to show that the law of
God is the very law that said
00:55:58.10\00:56:01.23
"Thou shalt not... " Say it
loud. "Covet. " That's right.
00:56:01.33\00:56:05.99
Then we went to Isaiah
59:1,2 to show that sin
00:56:06.09\00:56:09.32
separates us from God.
00:56:09.52\00:56:13.08
Sin separates us from God.
00:56:13.28\00:56:17.78
We have decided in this
study so far that we are not
00:56:19.18\00:56:24.02
willing to be
separated from God.
00:56:24.22\00:56:28.06
Since sin is what separates us
00:56:28.46\00:56:32.56
from God and we don't
want to be separated from God
00:56:32.76\00:56:37.05
then what is it
that we need? Grace.
00:56:37.25\00:56:41.24
That's right, Mike. We
need grace which is the
00:56:41.44\00:56:44.84
power of God to overcome sin.
00:56:45.05\00:56:48.51
Which means that we
still need the Author of grace
00:56:48.71\00:56:52.17
who is Jesus because
the Bible said in John 1:14
00:56:52.37\00:56:56.94
that "the Word became
flesh and dwelt among us
00:56:57.14\00:57:00.42
and we beheld His glory,
00:57:00.62\00:57:02.27
the glory as of the only
00:57:02.47\00:57:04.43
begotten of the Father
00:57:04.63\00:57:06.11
full of grace and truth. "
00:57:06.32\00:57:10.02
Now for those of you
that are in this room,
00:57:11.03\00:57:13.59
for those of you
that are at home,
00:57:13.79\00:57:16.01
the study's not over.
00:57:16.21\00:57:17.42
We have more to
cover in this study.
00:57:17.62\00:57:20.13
But at this particular
moment take some time to reflect
00:57:20.33\00:57:24.59
on your life. Are you
struggling with things
00:57:24.79\00:57:29.90
in your life and do
you need the power of God?
00:57:30.10\00:57:35.13
I believe we do,
00:57:36.51\00:57:38.00
and we'll finish this
study in our next program.
00:57:38.20\00:57:41.82
