It's about five o'clock in the morning. 00:01:00.19\00:01:01.69 We are loading the boat have to go out through the villages, 00:01:01.72\00:01:04.09 picking up some of the supplies to the missionaries there. 00:01:04.13\00:01:06.29 The villagers were the heartbeat of the educational program 00:01:06.33\00:01:08.96 goes on here at Laymen Ministries. 00:01:09.00\00:01:10.73 We're excited to take you with us this morning, 00:01:10.77\00:01:12.70 go out and see what's happening. 00:01:12.73\00:01:14.84 We are pulling out of port in Mamburao, 00:01:33.19\00:01:35.46 heading across Paluan Bay on the South China Sea 00:01:35.49\00:01:38.99 to the remote village of Binuangan. 00:01:39.03\00:01:42.50 The trip started out uneventful 00:01:42.53\00:01:44.20 as the morning sun lit up the sky. 00:01:44.23\00:01:47.87 The closer we got to open sea, 00:01:47.90\00:01:49.80 the more the wind and the waves began to pickup. 00:01:49.84\00:01:52.64 Our boat was greeted by all the school children 00:02:05.29\00:02:07.59 and the missionaries. 00:02:07.62\00:02:09.09 This is what happens every time 00:02:13.86\00:02:15.33 the boat brings in supplies to the missionaries. 00:02:15.36\00:02:18.13 Every one helps to unload the boat. 00:02:18.17\00:02:20.27 This children who belong to the Aryan tribe 00:02:40.92\00:02:43.69 and were once so shy, they would hide, 00:02:43.73\00:02:46.29 bombarded me with hugs. 00:02:46.33\00:02:48.00 The wind was blowing about 40 miles an hour, 00:03:06.21\00:03:08.42 when we was cross Paluan Bay this morning. 00:03:08.45\00:03:10.55 And the waves were probably about two meters tall 00:03:10.59\00:03:12.89 which you've got six feet tall with whitecaps 00:03:12.92\00:03:15.52 and so we weren't able to get very good video footage 00:03:15.56\00:03:17.49 this morning on the boat. 00:03:17.53\00:03:19.56 You can see here, the wind is just blowing, like crazy. 00:03:19.59\00:03:22.26 I am Jeff Lloren, Lloren from Mindanao, 00:03:27.94\00:03:31.77 the Southern part of the Philippines. 00:03:31.81\00:03:33.78 My name is Franklin Gonzales 00:03:33.81\00:03:35.84 and I came from San Jose. 00:03:35.88\00:03:40.18 My name is Janice Lloren and I'm from Mindanao. 00:03:40.22\00:03:44.72 My name is Lowella Grace Gonzales. 00:03:44.75\00:03:48.09 My name is Chesa Lamagui 00:03:48.12\00:03:50.56 and I came from Pili and it's in Biliran, 00:03:50.59\00:03:56.56 a part of-- a former part of Leyte. 00:03:56.60\00:03:59.40 I'm from Central Visayas. 00:03:59.43\00:04:02.40 Here in Binuangan, 00:04:02.44\00:04:03.47 I work as a teacher and I'm teaching grade two. 00:04:03.51\00:04:09.84 Also in the Church during Sabbath day, 00:04:09.88\00:04:12.28 I work also as a church pastor. 00:04:12.31\00:04:14.52 And we preach to the people 00:04:14.55\00:04:19.59 and we give them also Bible studies. 00:04:19.62\00:04:22.29 I work here in Binuangan as a kinder teacher. 00:04:22.32\00:04:28.43 I'm teaching here in Binuangan, 00:04:28.46\00:04:30.23 and actually this is my first year 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.50 to be back from college. 00:04:32.53\00:04:34.44 I'm teaching the grade six students. 00:04:34.47\00:04:37.14 I work in Binuangan as a teacher 00:04:37.17\00:04:40.04 for grade one and grade three 00:04:40.08\00:04:42.61 and we are also serving as village leaders. 00:04:42.64\00:04:47.92 And sometimes we also serve as doctors. 00:04:47.95\00:04:51.09 We knew already, they told us everything 00:04:51.12\00:04:53.22 that we are going to teach but, 00:04:53.25\00:04:56.16 what surprised me a bit is that, 00:04:56.19\00:04:59.03 I didn't know that, 00:04:59.06\00:05:02.53 our work is not really to teach the children 00:05:02.56\00:05:05.60 but to teach the whole village, 00:05:05.63\00:05:07.34 like everybody from young to old. 00:05:07.37\00:05:10.07 I thought that we are just going to teach in the classroom 00:05:10.11\00:05:14.81 but actually we are teaching 00:05:14.84\00:05:19.35 parents also and everybody in the village. 00:05:19.38\00:05:22.98 Knowing that the kids learn form you 00:05:23.02\00:05:25.59 and it's really a great feeling, 00:05:25.62\00:05:28.19 and I don't know, I cannot describe, 00:05:28.22\00:05:30.16 it's really it really gives you 00:05:30.19\00:05:34.03 an incomparable happiness. 00:05:34.10\00:05:38.23 This will be our four years 00:05:38.27\00:05:40.57 of working in the Laymen Ministries. 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.97 But, actually we didn't think that 00:05:43.00\00:05:45.57 we were able to stay that period of time 00:05:45.61\00:05:50.28 because when we came here 00:05:50.31\00:05:51.51 we thought only of staying here for seven months. 00:05:51.55\00:05:55.02 But when God calls us to work, 00:05:55.05\00:05:57.82 then we cannot really say no to Him. 00:05:57.85\00:06:00.92 Without knowledge of God's word 00:06:00.96\00:06:03.63 then these people will not be able to know 00:06:03.66\00:06:06.80 Jesus in their life. 00:06:06.83\00:06:09.16 It's really an important thing 00:06:09.20\00:06:11.63 for us to teach these people about the word of God. 00:06:11.67\00:06:16.00 To destroy the kale. 00:06:16.04\00:06:17.87 ( speaking in foreign language ) 00:06:17.91\00:06:20.98 What do you use to put out the fire? 00:06:21.01\00:06:23.11 Water. Okay, water. 00:06:23.14\00:06:24.51 You said right. 00:06:24.55\00:06:25.55 You sense sometimes right to put out the fire. 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.28 This is a command. 00:06:28.32\00:06:29.82 Verses or stories or sentences 00:06:33.42\00:06:36.56 from the Bible that is the declarative. 00:06:36.59\00:06:39.73 The village of Binuangan 00:06:39.76\00:06:40.80 is one of the most recent villages 00:06:40.83\00:06:42.10 that we entered about eight years ago 00:06:42.13\00:06:43.57 on this end of Island of Mindoro. 00:06:43.60\00:06:45.73 And lot of challenges when you first start a project 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.97 like this in this remote Katutubo villages 00:06:48.00\00:06:50.24 but by God's grace, there's been a lot of progress. 00:06:50.27\00:06:53.14 Last year, we had two German missionaries, 00:06:53.17\00:06:55.14 group missionaries, actually they came here 00:06:55.18\00:06:57.18 and they raise some funds from Germany 00:06:57.21\00:06:58.88 to build this new church in Binuangan. 00:06:58.91\00:07:01.32 And so now have a very thriving village here 00:07:01.35\00:07:04.32 with a lot of things happening with the education 00:07:04.35\00:07:06.79 and it's amazing to watch the young kids, 00:07:06.82\00:07:09.09 actually leading out in the church services here. 00:07:09.12\00:07:11.09 'Cause really the purpose that Laymen Ministries here, 00:07:11.13\00:07:14.30 is to train the nationals 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.16 to be able to minister to their own people. 00:07:16.20\00:07:18.43 Our job, even though it might be kind of a long haul 00:07:18.47\00:07:21.24 is going to try to train these people 00:07:21.27\00:07:23.20 to become teachers to their own people, 00:07:23.24\00:07:24.67 to be preachers to their own people, 00:07:24.71\00:07:26.34 working among their own people group. 00:07:26.37\00:07:27.81 Ultimately, they put Laymen Ministries 00:07:27.84\00:07:29.44 out of business in this village. 00:07:29.48\00:07:31.45 Laymen Ministries doesn't just come in and work 00:07:31.48\00:07:33.38 for like two weeks and so some kind 00:07:33.42\00:07:34.65 of evangelistic series and leave. 00:07:34.68\00:07:36.65 We're in the long haul 00:07:36.69\00:07:37.69 to set a proper type of grounding to take place 00:07:37.72\00:07:40.39 so that these kids can actually do 00:07:40.42\00:07:42.76 what we are doing right now 00:07:42.79\00:07:43.93 within amongst their own people group. 00:07:43.96\00:07:47.56 When we first came here 00:07:47.60\00:07:50.03 the students were very shy 00:07:50.07\00:07:51.90 like, would not stand for people, 00:07:51.93\00:07:55.17 and would not sing. 00:07:55.20\00:07:56.37 Well, they sometime covered their faces when they sang. 00:07:56.40\00:07:59.57 But, as time passed by there was really a change 00:07:59.61\00:08:04.78 in their behavior and their confidence. 00:08:04.81\00:08:08.88 Now they are more confident 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.85 and what really amazes us 00:08:10.89\00:08:13.09 is that they are now leading the church. 00:08:13.12\00:08:17.09 They share with others 00:08:17.13\00:08:19.83 what they have learned from the school 00:08:19.86\00:08:22.50 and from the church. 00:08:22.53\00:08:23.97 And it's really amazing to see our young people 00:08:24.00\00:08:26.23 leading in the church. 00:08:26.27\00:08:27.54 And not only leading but preaching. 00:08:27.57\00:08:30.34 ( singing in foreign language ) 00:08:30.37\00:08:35.41 We left this morning at five o'clock 00:08:53.33\00:08:55.06 for Pinagbayanan in pitch black dark 00:08:55.10\00:08:56.97 'cause we thought maybe the Amihan winds 00:08:57.00\00:08:58.83 would be a lot less. 00:08:58.87\00:09:00.20 We are out there and down that they won't long last, 00:09:00.24\00:09:02.67 so we are battling waves 00:09:02.70\00:09:04.14 and probably 40, 45 mile an hour winds plus 00:09:04.17\00:09:09.31 and we made it here. 00:09:09.34\00:09:10.61 And we have a sheltered bay here in Pinagbayanan. 00:09:10.65\00:09:13.65 It's kind of nice to park in the boat. 00:09:13.68\00:09:15.92 I was excited to meet old friends 00:09:24.06\00:09:25.86 and the new student missionaries here in Pinagbayanan. 00:09:25.89\00:09:28.93 We have arrived right when they were starting 00:09:39.81\00:09:41.44 their flag raising ceremony. 00:09:41.48\00:09:43.68 We had worshiped together with the staff 00:09:49.72\00:09:51.82 where I shared words of encouragement. 00:09:51.85\00:09:53.99 My name is Sarah Harms 00:10:02.10\00:10:03.77 and I'm 23-years-old and I'm from Germany. 00:10:03.80\00:10:07.17 Hey, my name is Kelvin Moses Arellano, 00:10:07.20\00:10:09.74 I'm 23-years-old from Oriental Mindoro. 00:10:09.77\00:10:14.31 My name is Sunshine L. Trapse, 00:10:14.34\00:10:16.54 I'm 21-years-old. 00:10:16.58\00:10:18.75 I'm Matthias Stroeck, I'm from Germany. 00:10:18.78\00:10:21.05 I'm now 18-years-old 00:10:21.08\00:10:23.18 and I'm from the city of Cuxhaven, Germany. 00:10:23.22\00:10:26.02 I am a missionary teacher, 00:10:26.05\00:10:27.96 I am teaching grade two in Pinagbayanan 00:10:27.99\00:10:30.96 in a small village in the Philippines. 00:10:30.99\00:10:33.46 I'm teaching here in Pinagbayanan Katutubo Excell. 00:10:33.50\00:10:37.53 Pinagbayanan Katutubo Excell School. 00:10:37.57\00:10:40.57 I'm here as a missionary teacher 00:10:40.60\00:10:42.94 and I'm teaching kinder A. 00:10:42.97\00:10:46.27 Working here in Laymen Ministries 00:10:46.31\00:10:48.44 Pinagbayanan Katutubo Excell School 00:10:48.48\00:10:50.75 as grade one teacher. 00:10:50.78\00:10:52.85 Life in the Philippines, you know, it's very different 00:10:52.88\00:10:55.48 form Germany or from the USA. 00:10:55.52\00:10:58.29 I was first a little bit shocked when I saw all these huts, 00:10:58.32\00:11:01.59 and how the people are living here. 00:11:01.62\00:11:04.36 It's very exciting and adventurous 00:11:04.39\00:11:06.93 to teach in this village. 00:11:06.96\00:11:08.73 The people here still believe in some spirits. 00:11:08.76\00:11:12.77 It's sometimes also hard for us 00:11:12.80\00:11:15.04 to influence them in Christianity, 00:11:15.07\00:11:18.97 if they still have 00:11:19.01\00:11:20.28 sometimes the background of some spirits. 00:11:20.31\00:11:23.24 It seems for me that Jesus is closer here, or something else 00:11:23.28\00:11:27.48 because we don't have the technology 00:11:27.52\00:11:29.82 like cell phone, cell phone we have, 00:11:29.85\00:11:31.99 but we're not using so much like TV, 00:11:32.02\00:11:34.16 like radio and all those things, 00:11:34.19\00:11:36.46 and it seem that without all those things 00:11:36.49\00:11:40.23 I'm closer to Jesus. 00:11:40.26\00:11:42.00 Very nice to be a missionary 00:11:42.03\00:11:44.00 because here I'm very far from city life 00:11:44.03\00:11:50.41 And I can live here in a quite and peace. 00:11:50.44\00:11:56.81 This is an experience you will have 00:11:56.85\00:11:58.41 for your whole life. 00:11:58.45\00:11:59.48 This is a time where you can build up 00:11:59.51\00:12:01.55 a relationship to Christ 00:12:01.58\00:12:02.95 which you will have no where. 00:12:02.98\00:12:04.89 Here no internet. 00:12:04.92\00:12:06.69 No telemo, telecommunication. 00:12:06.72\00:12:09.59 And so you can really focus 00:12:09.62\00:12:12.63 in your relationship and you can pray. 00:12:12.66\00:12:14.46 And through all the experiences 00:12:14.50\00:12:15.96 you have here in the village, 00:12:16.00\00:12:17.13 you experience Christ and God in your life. 00:12:17.17\00:12:19.87 This is what I'm happy about here. 00:12:19.90\00:12:22.44 During Sabbath afternoon we had outreach, 00:12:22.47\00:12:25.14 and we visited some places on the mountain, 00:12:25.17\00:12:30.08 a remote area with children like a Katutubo 00:12:30.11\00:12:33.58 and it really impressed me like that. 00:12:33.62\00:12:36.15 If ever that God touch you 00:12:36.18\00:12:38.75 or call you don't ever hesitate. 00:12:38.79\00:12:44.69 Accept, grab the opportunity 00:12:44.73\00:12:46.90 and teach and be a missionary 00:12:46.93\00:12:48.90 and ambassador of Christ. 00:12:48.93\00:12:50.60 I can only encourage every, 00:12:50.63\00:12:52.73 everyone, everybody to come here to the Philippines 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.37 and experience for yourself 00:12:55.40\00:12:58.21 what God will do in your life when you come here. 00:12:58.24\00:13:01.78 What we are witnessing right is 00:13:01.81\00:13:02.98 what is referred to as Amihan, 00:13:03.01\00:13:05.05 which means the prevailing Northeastern winds. 00:13:05.08\00:13:08.22 The gushes are probably around 40, 45 miles an hour and more. 00:13:08.25\00:13:12.25 The swells on the ocean are around two meters 00:13:12.29\00:13:15.26 which is about six, seven, eight feet 00:13:15.29\00:13:17.49 right in there up and down. 00:13:17.53\00:13:19.19 We actually left the village of Binuangan, 00:13:19.23\00:13:21.26 Binuangan in this morning, really early 00:13:21.30\00:13:23.67 before day break in the dark, on the boat, 00:13:23.70\00:13:25.97 hoping that the sea would be quite calm. 00:13:26.00\00:13:28.07 But we ended up getting into some 00:13:28.10\00:13:29.90 really gale force winds and big huge swells. 00:13:29.94\00:13:32.77 And it was quite frightening, 00:13:32.81\00:13:33.84 'cause we were in the dark, 00:13:33.88\00:13:34.84 the first half hour, 45 minutes of our trip. 00:13:34.88\00:13:37.98 And it's been like this is the whole time 00:13:38.01\00:13:39.95 we've been on this side of the island. 00:13:39.98\00:13:41.88 Now what we're wondering is should 00:13:41.92\00:13:43.22 we actually take the trip 00:13:43.25\00:13:44.59 with the boat tomorrow morning 00:13:44.62\00:13:45.95 around this end of the island, 00:13:45.99\00:13:47.72 right into the Amihan and try to get 00:13:47.76\00:13:49.82 to the village of Agbalite. 00:13:49.86\00:13:51.69 I think it helps you to have an understanding 00:13:51.73\00:13:53.50 of the challenges that the missionaries 00:13:53.53\00:13:54.93 have in getting supplies 00:13:54.93\00:13:56.36 to some of these villages, 00:13:56.40\00:13:57.67 different times of the year, 00:13:57.70\00:13:59.23 depending on the weather conditions like these. 00:13:59.27\00:14:01.47 Well, the decision has been made this morning, 00:14:06.27\00:14:08.01 we're gonna walk all the way to Agbalite, 00:14:08.04\00:14:09.88 because the Amihan is too big for the boat 00:14:09.91\00:14:12.38 to be able to go around there, 00:14:12.41\00:14:14.42 too dangerous for the boats. 00:14:14.45\00:14:15.78 So as you can see the waves are pretty big, 00:14:15.82\00:14:18.15 part of the way that we have to walk along the beach. 00:14:18.19\00:14:20.76 And then we have to go up into the mountain lines 00:14:20.79\00:14:22.42 some trails that are harder to even find 00:14:22.46\00:14:24.96 and then make our way over to Agbalite, this morning. 00:14:24.99\00:14:27.83 When we arrived to Agbalite, 00:15:17.85\00:15:19.58 we are greeted by Din, 00:15:19.61\00:15:20.82 a long time missionary with Laymen Ministries. 00:15:20.85\00:15:25.65 The kids were clean 00:15:25.69\00:15:26.69 and very attentive to their studies. 00:15:26.72\00:15:28.72 Well, this was exam time too 00:15:28.76\00:15:30.99 so they were really concentrating. 00:15:31.03\00:15:34.86 I am Dino Pernia. And the people call me Din. 00:15:34.93\00:15:40.77 I am Isabel Alplaus Paz. 00:15:40.80\00:15:44.07 I'm 26-years-old and I'm from Sablayan, 00:15:44.11\00:15:49.14 Occidental Mindoro. 00:15:49.18\00:15:50.78 I am Dada Indico Pernia. 00:15:50.81\00:15:55.15 And I came from Region V Naga. 00:15:55.18\00:16:00.92 I'm teaching grade one and two 00:16:00.96\00:16:06.39 and, I'm enjoying my work here as a teacher. 00:16:06.43\00:16:11.93 Being a missionary is a matter of-- 00:16:11.97\00:16:18.11 putting yourself into a commitment 00:16:18.14\00:16:19.87 with God that whatever happens, 00:16:19.91\00:16:22.21 you would trust God with whatever challenges 00:16:22.24\00:16:25.88 you might experience in the village. 00:16:25.91\00:16:27.85 My friends would say like my classmates would say, 00:16:27.88\00:16:30.75 "Oh, you're in the jungle 00:16:30.79\00:16:32.69 and you couldn't even go to the town for five months," 00:16:32.72\00:16:36.66 like that, but I had been, I had been telling them that 00:16:36.69\00:16:41.50 its rewarding to work here with this Katutubo, 00:16:41.53\00:16:46.53 my students and with the people also. 00:16:46.57\00:16:49.87 In this village many parents 00:16:49.90\00:16:55.78 are not supported too, 00:16:55.81\00:16:59.21 to finish the education of the students, 00:16:59.25\00:17:01.95 and the old folks here discourage 00:17:01.98\00:17:05.42 the students to continue their studies. 00:17:05.45\00:17:07.92 With my students they inside the classroom, 00:17:07.96\00:17:12.36 it is a challenge that my students 00:17:12.39\00:17:15.00 before they were so shy to express themselves 00:17:15.03\00:17:19.13 and right now they can express themselves, 00:17:19.17\00:17:21.70 they can express their thoughts and that's what I think 00:17:21.74\00:17:27.18 one of the best encouraging 00:17:27.21\00:17:32.88 experience I have here. 00:17:32.91\00:17:35.98 This is Nardi. And how old you are, Nardi? 00:17:36.02\00:17:40.82 I am sorry. Ten years old. 00:17:40.86\00:17:43.32 Eight? Ten. 00:17:43.36\00:17:44.73 Ten. You're 10 years old. 00:17:44.76\00:17:46.70 And you live in, what village? 00:17:46.73\00:17:50.10 What's the name of your village? 00:17:50.13\00:17:54.70 You don't know where you live? 00:17:54.74\00:17:56.27 This is Agbelite, isn't it? 00:18:00.44\00:18:03.98 Now she is decided that she's gonna show us 00:18:04.01\00:18:06.05 where she lives 00:18:06.08\00:18:07.32 and so we wanted to take you to Nardi's house 00:18:07.35\00:18:09.98 and to see how her Katutubo home is in for her. 00:18:10.02\00:18:14.49 Is your mother home at your house? No. 00:18:14.52\00:18:18.83 Your father, tatay. 00:18:18.86\00:18:21.20 Your tatay or your babae? 00:18:21.23\00:18:24.27 Her mother passed away. Oh, okay. 00:18:24.30\00:18:27.34 So you want to go to your house? 00:18:27.37\00:18:29.80 Let's go. 00:18:29.84\00:18:32.57 I've been coming to Agbelite for many years, 00:18:32.61\00:18:34.54 so I know this village really well. 00:18:34.58\00:18:38.71 I let you go first. After you, ma'am. 00:18:38.75\00:18:41.22 This is her typical Katutubo home. 00:18:58.00\00:19:00.34 I guess the father, 00:19:00.37\00:19:01.44 they call tatay is not feeling too good. 00:19:01.47\00:19:04.47 ( speaking in foreign language ) 00:19:04.51\00:19:08.41 And he's got a nice house here. 00:19:08.44\00:19:12.01 Shall I go in? Okay. 00:19:12.05\00:19:15.15 Oh, she is been really shy. 00:19:15.18\00:19:17.52 This is a traditional Katutubo home. 00:19:17.55\00:19:19.52 The family will sleep together on one bed here. 00:19:19.55\00:19:22.99 And this is sister. 00:19:23.02\00:19:27.40 ( speaking in foreign language ) 00:19:27.46\00:19:31.50 And they do their cooking like this. 00:19:31.53\00:19:33.13 This is the kitchen table. 00:19:33.17\00:19:34.87 And the typical patch roof here. 00:19:34.90\00:19:37.51 And then sometimes they'll have like another bedroom, 00:19:37.54\00:19:40.04 like up here, where the family will sleep. 00:19:40.08\00:19:42.24 So this actually house has a couple of different bedrooms. 00:19:42.28\00:19:45.75 And then I'm not really quite sure what this room is, 00:19:45.78\00:19:50.29 they have a couple of little rooms here, 00:19:50.32\00:19:51.52 where they have some different things in it, 00:19:51.55\00:19:53.09 but you can see how simple they live, 00:19:53.12\00:19:54.79 they have like, a dirt floor, cooking with wood inside. 00:19:54.82\00:19:58.99 And really, just really simple construction, 00:19:59.03\00:20:01.36 also these lumbers made with chainsaw. 00:20:01.40\00:20:04.03 And it's a fairly hardwood that. 00:20:04.07\00:20:07.77 So it's just a standard typical Katutubo home. 00:20:07.80\00:20:10.74 Some times, it could be like five, six children 00:20:10.77\00:20:12.81 and mother and father living in a place like this. 00:20:12.84\00:20:15.64 Today is Friday morning 00:21:31.02\00:21:32.09 and we're going to drive all the way over to Sablayan 00:21:32.12\00:21:34.42 to visit Louie and Abel the Prison Ministry for Sabbath. 00:21:34.46\00:21:37.69 This is a little bit of a Deja vu, 00:21:37.73\00:21:39.26 because probably about five, six, seven years ago, 00:21:39.29\00:21:41.80 we did exactly the same thing on video, 00:21:41.83\00:21:43.50 except we were driving a beat up little van 00:21:43.53\00:21:46.57 that we borrowed from our friend. 00:21:46.60\00:21:48.17 And we really question weather or not 00:21:48.20\00:21:49.70 it was gonna make it all the way over there or not. 00:21:49.74\00:21:51.84 But now we're driving Laymen Ministries 00:21:51.87\00:21:53.54 little ranger pickup truck 00:21:53.58\00:21:54.71 which we are being blessed with here. 00:21:54.74\00:21:56.18 So we're gonna check out what's happening 00:21:56.21\00:21:57.61 with the prison ministry and we're gonna show you 00:21:57.65\00:21:59.41 just a few sites along the way on the drive 00:21:59.45\00:22:01.15 all the way down to Sablayan. 00:22:01.18\00:22:02.62 About 10 years ago, when we used to do this 00:22:23.00\00:22:24.84 drive to Sablayan, we take the buses 00:22:24.87\00:22:27.08 and about two thirds of this road was gravel 00:22:27.11\00:22:30.28 and it was terrible. 00:22:30.31\00:22:31.38 You would have to have a cloth to put over your mouth 00:22:31.41\00:22:33.28 and the dust was just building up. 00:22:33.31\00:22:34.88 By the time you got there, 00:22:34.92\00:22:36.08 you really need to take a quick rest, 00:22:36.12\00:22:38.22 just to get the dirt off your body. 00:22:38.25\00:22:39.69 In the Philippines, agriculture is a very big part 00:22:56.54\00:22:59.17 of their culture, 00:22:59.21\00:23:00.94 much of its sinners around planting 00:23:00.98\00:23:02.68 and harvesting rice, which is a main staple here. 00:23:02.71\00:23:05.85 Another common agricultural product 00:23:26.50\00:23:28.50 in the Philippines is corn. 00:23:28.54\00:23:30.61 A good part of the corn harvest is used to feed livestock. 00:23:38.28\00:23:41.92 The green kernels are laid out on a flat surface 00:23:41.95\00:23:44.35 like a basketball court or a highway to fully dry. 00:23:44.39\00:23:48.09 This way the corn can be stored for a longer period of time. 00:23:48.12\00:23:51.13 On Sabbath morning, we took Laymen Ministries' 00:24:31.77\00:24:34.14 miracle Jeepney to the prison. 00:24:34.17\00:24:36.10 We call it a miracle Jeepney, 00:24:36.14\00:24:37.67 because it is proven itself indestructible over the years, 00:24:37.71\00:24:41.41 even being swamped once in a river for nearly two days. 00:24:41.44\00:24:46.11 This is a regular routine every Sabbath 00:24:46.15\00:24:48.48 as lay member from churches in the surrounding areas 00:24:48.52\00:24:51.05 are picked up to go help minister 00:24:51.09\00:24:53.15 and participate in the prison church services 00:24:53.19\00:24:55.76 with the inmates. 00:24:55.79\00:24:59.16 ( singing in foreign language ) 00:24:59.19\00:25:03.87 My name is Abel Miralles. 00:25:18.88\00:25:21.08 I have a wife and two daughters. 00:25:21.12\00:25:23.89 I work in the prison ministry by the Laymen Ministries. 00:25:23.92\00:25:28.32 I've been working with the Laymen Ministries 00:25:28.36\00:25:31.59 in the prison ministry about 13 years. 00:25:31.63\00:25:36.06 I've been involved with the prison ministry 00:25:36.10\00:25:38.50 for about 12-years now. 00:25:38.53\00:25:42.47 The area of the prison facilities 00:25:42.50\00:25:46.21 is about 62,000 acres. 00:25:46.24\00:25:50.08 It's a very huge facility. 00:25:50.11\00:25:52.41 The objective of prison ministry 00:25:52.45\00:25:54.55 is to educate inmates spiritually 00:25:54.58\00:25:59.32 because we want to recover 00:25:59.35\00:26:02.19 their lost moral and spiritual aspects. 00:26:02.22\00:26:06.49 Every Saturday from the Sabbath School program 00:26:06.53\00:26:08.36 down to the hour of worship service, 00:26:08.40\00:26:12.10 they are the ones doing the program alone. 00:26:12.13\00:26:15.34 As we teach the inmates 00:26:15.37\00:26:16.50 there are consistent discipleship happening 00:26:16.54\00:26:20.61 because of the evening Bible study inside the dormitory 00:26:20.64\00:26:25.68 where the inmates are teaching their fellow inmates 00:26:25.71\00:26:29.08 and also the things that they are learning 00:26:29.12\00:26:31.59 when we are around. 00:26:31.62\00:26:33.72 That's one of the great factors that we should consider. 00:26:33.76\00:26:38.73 The inmates come and go but as the inmates go inside 00:26:38.76\00:26:46.13 when they were released they went out as a missionary. 00:26:46.17\00:26:51.51 There are inmates who have been released 00:26:51.54\00:26:53.88 and they are living now outside the prison, 00:26:53.91\00:26:56.41 most of them are in the central part of the Philippines, 00:26:56.44\00:27:00.38 and we have communication with each other, 00:27:00.42\00:27:03.65 especially during Friday evening they send text messages 00:27:03.69\00:27:10.56 telling that they are in the church 00:27:10.59\00:27:15.43 attending the vesper 00:27:15.46\00:27:17.77 and greeting us "Happy Sabbath!" 00:27:17.80\00:27:19.83 It's very rewarding to hear 00:27:19.87\00:27:24.57 that after the inmates were released 00:27:24.61\00:27:26.98 they still continue with their faith. 00:27:27.01\00:27:28.68 According to 2 Peter 3:18 "Grow in grace 00:27:28.71\00:27:34.62 and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." 00:27:34.65\00:27:37.02
