It's about five o'clock in the morning. 00:01:00.27\00:01:01.78 We are loading the boat have to go out through the villages, 00:01:01.81\00:01:04.19 picking up some of the supplies to the missionaries there. 00:01:04.22\00:01:06.38 The villagers were the heartbeat of the educational program 00:01:06.41\00:01:09.10 goes on here at Laymen Ministries. 00:01:09.13\00:01:10.86 We're excited to take you with us this morning, 00:01:10.89\00:01:12.81 go out and see what's happening. 00:01:12.84\00:01:14.87 We are pulling out of port in Mamburao, 00:01:33.27\00:01:35.54 heading across Paluan Bay on the South China Sea 00:01:35.57\00:01:39.09 to the remote village of Binuangan. 00:01:39.12\00:01:42.62 The trip started out uneventful 00:01:42.65\00:01:44.33 as the morning sun lit up the sky. 00:01:44.36\00:01:47.98 The closer we got to open sea, 00:01:48.01\00:01:49.91 the more the wind and the waves began to pickup. 00:01:49.94\00:01:52.67 Our boat was greeted by all the school children 00:02:05.39\00:02:07.70 and the missionaries. 00:02:07.73\00:02:09.12 This is what happens every time 00:02:13.95\00:02:15.45 the boat brings in supplies to the missionaries. 00:02:15.48\00:02:18.24 Every one helps to unload the boat. 00:02:18.27\00:02:20.31 This children who belong to the Aryan tribe 00:02:41.00\00:02:43.79 and were once so shy, they would hide, 00:02:43.82\00:02:46.37 bombarded me with hugs. 00:02:46.40\00:02:48.06 The wind was blowing about 40 miles an hour, 00:03:06.33\00:03:08.52 when we was cross Paluan Bay this morning. 00:03:08.55\00:03:10.66 And the waves were probably about two meters tall 00:03:10.69\00:03:12.97 which you've got six feet tall with whitecaps 00:03:13.00\00:03:15.63 and so we weren't able to get very good video footage 00:03:15.66\00:03:17.58 this morning on the boat. 00:03:17.61\00:03:19.64 You can see here, the wind is just blowing, like crazy. 00:03:19.67\00:03:22.32 I am Jeff Lloren, Lloren from Mindanao, 00:03:28.06\00:03:31.87 the Southern part of the Philippines. 00:03:31.90\00:03:33.90 My name is Franklin Gonzales 00:03:33.93\00:03:35.96 and I came from San Jose. 00:03:35.99\00:03:40.29 My name is Janice Lloren and I'm from Mindanao. 00:03:40.32\00:03:44.81 My name is Lowella Grace Gonzales. 00:03:44.84\00:03:48.19 My name is Chesa Lamagui 00:03:48.22\00:03:50.66 and I came from Pili and it's in Biliran, 00:03:50.69\00:03:56.69 a part of-- a former part of Leyte. 00:03:56.72\00:03:59.53 I'm from Central Visayas. 00:03:59.56\00:04:02.53 Here in Binuangan, 00:04:02.56\00:04:03.59 I work as a teacher and I'm teaching grade two. 00:04:03.62\00:04:09.95 Also in the Church during Sabbath day, 00:04:09.98\00:04:12.38 I work also as a church pastor. 00:04:12.41\00:04:14.62 And we preach to the people 00:04:14.65\00:04:19.69 and we give them also Bible studies. 00:04:19.72\00:04:22.40 I work here in Binuangan as a kinder teacher. 00:04:22.43\00:04:28.56 I'm teaching here in Binuangan, 00:04:28.59\00:04:30.36 and actually this is my first year 00:04:30.39\00:04:32.61 to be back from college. 00:04:32.64\00:04:34.55 I'm teaching the grade six students. 00:04:34.58\00:04:37.25 I work in Binuangan as a teacher 00:04:37.28\00:04:40.15 for grade one and grade three 00:04:40.18\00:04:42.72 and we are also serving as village leaders. 00:04:42.75\00:04:48.03 And sometimes we also serve as doctors. 00:04:48.06\00:04:51.18 We knew already, they told us everything 00:04:51.21\00:04:53.32 that we are going to teach but, 00:04:53.35\00:04:56.25 what surprised me a bit is that, 00:04:56.28\00:04:59.12 I didn't know that, 00:04:59.15\00:05:02.64 our work is not really to teach the children 00:05:02.67\00:05:05.73 but to teach the whole village, 00:05:05.76\00:05:07.46 like everybody from young to old. 00:05:07.49\00:05:10.18 I thought that we are just going to teach in the classroom 00:05:10.21\00:05:14.92 but actually we are teaching 00:05:14.95\00:05:19.46 parents also and everybody in the village. 00:05:19.49\00:05:23.07 Knowing that the kids learn form you 00:05:23.10\00:05:25.69 and it's really a great feeling, 00:05:25.72\00:05:28.28 and I don't know, I cannot describe, 00:05:28.31\00:05:30.25 it's really it really gives you 00:05:30.28\00:05:34.14 an incomparable happiness. 00:05:34.17\00:05:38.35 This will be our four years 00:05:38.38\00:05:40.69 of working in the Laymen Ministries. 00:05:40.72\00:05:43.09 But, actually we didn't think that 00:05:43.12\00:05:45.67 we were able to stay that period of time 00:05:45.70\00:05:50.37 because when we came here 00:05:50.40\00:05:51.62 we thought only of staying here for seven months. 00:05:51.65\00:05:55.11 But when God calls us to work, 00:05:55.14\00:05:57.92 then we cannot really say no to Him. 00:05:57.95\00:06:01.02 Without knowledge of God's word 00:06:01.05\00:06:03.72 then these people will not be able to know 00:06:03.75\00:06:06.89 Jesus in their life. 00:06:06.92\00:06:09.27 It's really an important thing 00:06:09.30\00:06:11.74 for us to teach these people about the word of God. 00:06:11.77\00:06:16.11 To destroy the kale. 00:06:16.14\00:06:18.00 ( speaking in foreign language ) 00:06:18.03\00:06:21.08 What do you use to put out the fire? 00:06:21.11\00:06:23.22 Water. Okay, water. 00:06:23.25\00:06:24.61 You said right. 00:06:24.64\00:06:25.70 You sense sometimes right to put out the fire. 00:06:25.73\00:06:28.38 This is a command. 00:06:28.41\00:06:29.84 Verses or stories or sentences 00:06:33.53\00:06:36.66 from the Bible that is the declarative. 00:06:36.69\00:06:39.81 The village of Binuangan 00:06:39.84\00:06:40.87 is one of the most recent villages 00:06:40.90\00:06:42.22 that we entered about eight years ago 00:06:42.25\00:06:43.67 on this end of Island of Mindoro. 00:06:43.70\00:06:45.85 And lot of challenges when you first start a project 00:06:45.88\00:06:48.08 like this in this remote Katutubo villages 00:06:48.11\00:06:50.34 but by God's grace, there's been a lot of progress. 00:06:50.37\00:06:53.24 Last year, we had two German missionaries, 00:06:53.27\00:06:55.26 group missionaries, actually they came here 00:06:55.29\00:06:57.27 and they raise some funds from Germany 00:06:57.30\00:06:58.99 to build this new church in Binuangan. 00:06:59.02\00:07:01.42 And so now have a very thriving village here 00:07:01.45\00:07:04.41 with a lot of things happening with the education 00:07:04.44\00:07:06.88 and it's amazing to watch the young kids, 00:07:06.91\00:07:09.19 actually leading out in the church services here. 00:07:09.22\00:07:11.20 'Cause really the purpose that Laymen Ministries here, 00:07:11.23\00:07:14.42 is to train the nationals 00:07:14.45\00:07:16.27 to be able to minister to their own people. 00:07:16.30\00:07:18.55 Our job, even though it might be kind of a long haul 00:07:18.58\00:07:21.35 is going to try to train these people 00:07:21.38\00:07:23.33 to become teachers to their own people, 00:07:23.36\00:07:24.78 to be preachers to their own people, 00:07:24.81\00:07:26.45 working among their own people group. 00:07:26.48\00:07:27.93 Ultimately, they put Laymen Ministries 00:07:27.96\00:07:29.56 out of business in this village. 00:07:29.59\00:07:31.54 Laymen Ministries doesn't just come in and work 00:07:31.57\00:07:33.49 for like two weeks and so some kind 00:07:33.52\00:07:34.74 of evangelistic series and leave. 00:07:34.77\00:07:36.74 We're in the long haul 00:07:36.77\00:07:37.84 to set a proper type of grounding to take place 00:07:37.87\00:07:40.50 so that these kids can actually do 00:07:40.53\00:07:42.84 what we are doing right now 00:07:42.87\00:07:44.02 within amongst their own people group. 00:07:44.05\00:07:47.64 When we first came here 00:07:47.67\00:07:50.16 the students were very shy 00:07:50.19\00:07:52.03 like, would not stand for people, 00:07:52.06\00:07:55.30 and would not sing. 00:07:55.33\00:07:56.48 Well, they sometime covered their faces when they sang. 00:07:56.51\00:07:59.70 But, as time passed by there was really a change 00:07:59.73\00:08:04.89 in their behavior and their confidence. 00:08:04.92\00:08:08.98 Now they are more confident 00:08:09.01\00:08:10.96 and what really amazes us 00:08:10.99\00:08:13.17 is that they are now leading the church. 00:08:13.20\00:08:17.18 They share with others 00:08:17.21\00:08:19.92 what they have learned from the school 00:08:19.95\00:08:22.61 and from the church. 00:08:22.64\00:08:24.10 And it's really amazing to see our young people 00:08:24.13\00:08:26.35 leading in the church. 00:08:26.38\00:08:27.65 And not only leading but preaching. 00:08:27.68\00:08:30.44 ( singing in foreign language ) 00:08:30.47\00:08:35.44 We left this morning at five o'clock 00:08:53.41\00:08:55.19 for Pinagbayanan in pitch black dark 00:08:55.22\00:08:57.07 'cause we thought maybe the Amihan winds 00:08:57.10\00:08:58.94 would be a lot less. 00:08:58.97\00:09:00.33 We are out there and down that they won't long last, 00:09:00.36\00:09:02.80 so we are battling waves 00:09:02.83\00:09:04.26 and probably 40, 45 mile an hour winds plus 00:09:04.29\00:09:09.41 and we made it here. 00:09:09.44\00:09:10.72 And we have a sheltered bay here in Pinagbayanan. 00:09:10.75\00:09:13.74 It's kind of nice to park in the boat. 00:09:13.77\00:09:15.96 I was excited to meet old friends 00:09:24.14\00:09:25.95 and the new student missionaries here in Pinagbayanan. 00:09:25.98\00:09:28.98 We have arrived right when they were starting 00:09:39.90\00:09:41.56 their flag raising ceremony. 00:09:41.59\00:09:43.70 We had worshiped together with the staff 00:09:49.81\00:09:51.92 where I shared words of encouragement. 00:09:51.95\00:09:54.00 My name is Sarah Harms 00:10:02.21\00:10:03.89 and I'm 23-years-old and I'm from Germany. 00:10:03.92\00:10:07.29 Hey, my name is Kelvin Moses Arellano, 00:10:07.32\00:10:09.84 I'm 23-years-old from Oriental Mindoro. 00:10:09.87\00:10:14.41 My name is Sunshine L. Trapse, 00:10:14.44\00:10:16.64 I'm 21-years-old. 00:10:16.67\00:10:18.84 I'm Matthias Stroeck, I'm from Germany. 00:10:18.87\00:10:21.15 I'm now 18-years-old 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.30 and I'm from the city of Cuxhaven, Germany. 00:10:23.33\00:10:26.11 I am a missionary teacher, 00:10:26.14\00:10:28.05 I am teaching grade two in Pinagbayanan 00:10:28.08\00:10:31.05 in a small village in the Philippines. 00:10:31.08\00:10:33.56 I'm teaching here in Pinagbayanan Katutubo Excell. 00:10:33.59\00:10:37.64 Pinagbayanan Katutubo Excell School. 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.70 I'm here as a missionary teacher 00:10:40.73\00:10:43.06 and I'm teaching kinder A. 00:10:43.09\00:10:46.38 Working here in Laymen Ministries 00:10:46.41\00:10:48.54 Pinagbayanan Katutubo Excell School 00:10:48.57\00:10:50.86 as grade one teacher. 00:10:50.89\00:10:52.94 Life in the Philippines, you know, it's very different 00:10:52.97\00:10:55.59 form Germany or from the USA. 00:10:55.62\00:10:58.40 I was first a little bit shocked when I saw all these huts, 00:10:58.43\00:11:01.67 and how the people are living here. 00:11:01.70\00:11:04.46 It's very exciting and adventurous 00:11:04.49\00:11:07.03 to teach in this village. 00:11:07.06\00:11:08.86 The people here still believe in some spirits. 00:11:08.89\00:11:12.87 It's sometimes also hard for us 00:11:12.90\00:11:15.16 to influence them in Christianity, 00:11:15.19\00:11:19.07 if they still have 00:11:19.10\00:11:20.39 sometimes the background of some spirits. 00:11:20.42\00:11:23.36 It seems for me that Jesus is closer here, or something else 00:11:23.39\00:11:27.58 because we don't have the technology 00:11:27.61\00:11:29.91 like cell phone, cell phone we have, 00:11:29.94\00:11:32.10 but we're not using so much like TV, 00:11:32.13\00:11:34.26 like radio and all those things, 00:11:34.29\00:11:36.55 and it seem that without all those things 00:11:36.58\00:11:40.32 I'm closer to Jesus. 00:11:40.35\00:11:42.11 Very nice to be a missionary 00:11:42.14\00:11:44.13 because here I'm very far from city life 00:11:44.16\00:11:50.53 And I can live here in a quite and peace. 00:11:50.56\00:11:56.91 This is an experience you will have 00:11:56.94\00:11:58.52 for your whole life. 00:11:58.55\00:11:59.58 This is a time where you can build up 00:11:59.61\00:12:01.64 a relationship to Christ 00:12:01.67\00:12:03.06 which you will have no where. 00:12:03.09\00:12:04.99 Here no internet. 00:12:05.02\00:12:06.79 No telemo, telecommunication. 00:12:06.82\00:12:09.68 And so you can really focus 00:12:09.71\00:12:12.71 in your relationship and you can pray. 00:12:12.74\00:12:14.60 And through all the experiences 00:12:14.63\00:12:16.09 you have here in the village, 00:12:16.12\00:12:17.26 you experience Christ and God in your life. 00:12:17.29\00:12:20.00 This is what I'm happy about here. 00:12:20.03\00:12:22.55 During Sabbath afternoon we had outreach, 00:12:22.58\00:12:25.26 and we visited some places on the mountain, 00:12:25.29\00:12:30.17 a remote area with children like a Katutubo 00:12:30.20\00:12:33.68 and it really impressed me like that. 00:12:33.71\00:12:36.24 If ever that God touch you 00:12:36.27\00:12:38.85 or call you don't ever hesitate. 00:12:38.88\00:12:44.78 Accept, grab the opportunity 00:12:44.81\00:12:46.98 and teach and be a missionary 00:12:47.01\00:12:49.01 and ambassador of Christ. 00:12:49.04\00:12:50.73 I can only encourage every, 00:12:50.76\00:12:52.84 everyone, everybody to come here to the Philippines 00:12:52.87\00:12:55.50 and experience for yourself 00:12:55.53\00:12:58.31 what God will do in your life when you come here. 00:12:58.34\00:13:01.90 What we are witnessing right is 00:13:01.93\00:13:03.10 what is referred to as Amihan, 00:13:03.13\00:13:05.15 which means the prevailing Northeastern winds. 00:13:05.18\00:13:08.33 The gushes are probably around 40, 45 miles an hour and more. 00:13:08.36\00:13:12.35 The swells on the ocean are around two meters 00:13:12.38\00:13:15.35 which is about six, seven, eight feet 00:13:15.38\00:13:17.58 right in there up and down. 00:13:17.61\00:13:19.27 We actually left the village of Binuangan, 00:13:19.30\00:13:21.37 Binuangan in this morning, really early 00:13:21.40\00:13:23.79 before day break in the dark, on the boat, 00:13:23.82\00:13:26.09 hoping that the sea would be quite calm. 00:13:26.12\00:13:28.20 But we ended up getting into some 00:13:28.23\00:13:30.02 really gale force winds and big huge swells. 00:13:30.05\00:13:32.90 And it was quite frightening, 00:13:32.93\00:13:33.96 'cause we were in the dark, 00:13:33.99\00:13:35.02 the first half hour, 45 minutes of our trip. 00:13:35.05\00:13:38.08 And it's been like this is the whole time 00:13:38.11\00:13:40.06 we've been on this side of the island. 00:13:40.09\00:13:42.00 Now what we're wondering is should 00:13:42.03\00:13:43.32 we actually take the trip 00:13:43.35\00:13:44.67 with the boat tomorrow morning 00:13:44.70\00:13:46.06 around this end of the island, 00:13:46.09\00:13:47.83 right into the Amihan and try to get 00:13:47.86\00:13:49.93 to the village of Agbalite. 00:13:49.96\00:13:51.77 I think it helps you to have an understanding 00:13:51.80\00:13:53.59 of the challenges that the missionaries 00:13:53.62\00:13:55.02 have in getting supplies 00:13:55.05\00:13:56.47 to some of these villages, 00:13:56.50\00:13:57.77 different times of the year, 00:13:57.80\00:13:59.36 depending on the weather conditions like these. 00:13:59.39\00:14:01.53 Well, the decision has been made this morning, 00:14:06.37\00:14:08.12 we're gonna walk all the way to Agbalite, 00:14:08.15\00:14:10.00 because the Amihan is too big for the boat 00:14:10.03\00:14:12.50 to be able to go around there, 00:14:12.53\00:14:14.53 too dangerous for the boats. 00:14:14.56\00:14:15.87 So as you can see the waves are pretty big, 00:14:15.90\00:14:18.25 part of the way that we have to walk along the beach. 00:14:18.28\00:14:20.84 And then we have to go up into the mountain lines 00:14:20.87\00:14:22.52 some trails that are harder to even find 00:14:22.55\00:14:25.05 and then make our way over to Agbalite, this morning. 00:14:25.08\00:14:27.86 When we arrived to Agbalite, 00:15:17.94\00:15:19.70 we are greeted by Din, 00:15:19.73\00:15:20.92 a long time missionary with Laymen Ministries. 00:15:20.95\00:15:25.74 The kids were clean 00:15:25.77\00:15:26.80 and very attentive to their studies. 00:15:26.83\00:15:28.82 Well, this was exam time too 00:15:28.85\00:15:31.09 so they were really concentrating. 00:15:31.12\00:15:34.98 I am Dino Pernia. And the people call me Din. 00:15:35.01\00:15:40.89 I am Isabel Alplaus Paz. 00:15:40.92\00:15:44.18 I'm 26-years-old and I'm from Sablayan, 00:15:44.21\00:15:49.26 Occidental Mindoro. 00:15:49.29\00:15:50.88 I am Dada Indico Pernia. 00:15:50.91\00:15:55.25 And I came from Region V Naga. 00:15:55.28\00:16:01.01 I'm teaching grade one and two 00:16:01.04\00:16:06.49 and, I'm enjoying my work here as a teacher. 00:16:06.52\00:16:12.04 Being a missionary is a matter of-- 00:16:12.07\00:16:18.21 putting yourself into a commitment 00:16:18.24\00:16:19.97 with God that whatever happens, 00:16:20.00\00:16:22.31 you would trust God with whatever challenges 00:16:22.34\00:16:26.00 you might experience in the village. 00:16:26.03\00:16:27.95 My friends would say like my classmates would say, 00:16:27.98\00:16:30.85 "Oh, you're in the jungle 00:16:30.88\00:16:32.78 and you couldn't even go to the town for five months," 00:16:32.81\00:16:36.76 like that, but I had been, I had been telling them that 00:16:36.79\00:16:41.61 its rewarding to work here with this Katutubo, 00:16:41.64\00:16:46.66 my students and with the people also. 00:16:46.69\00:16:49.98 In this village many parents 00:16:50.01\00:16:55.87 are not supported too, 00:16:55.90\00:16:59.32 to finish the education of the students, 00:16:59.35\00:17:02.04 and the old folks here discourage 00:17:02.07\00:17:05.52 the students to continue their studies. 00:17:05.55\00:17:08.03 With my students they inside the classroom, 00:17:08.06\00:17:12.46 it is a challenge that my students 00:17:12.49\00:17:15.12 before they were so shy to express themselves 00:17:15.15\00:17:19.24 and right now they can express themselves, 00:17:19.27\00:17:21.81 they can express their thoughts and that's what I think 00:17:21.84\00:17:27.30 one of the best encouraging 00:17:27.33\00:17:33.00 experience I have here. 00:17:33.03\00:17:36.10 This is Nardi. And how old you are, Nardi? 00:17:36.13\00:17:40.91 I am sorry. Ten years old. 00:17:40.94\00:17:43.42 Eight? Ten. 00:17:43.45\00:17:44.81 Ten. You're 10 years old. 00:17:44.84\00:17:46.77 And you live in, what village? 00:17:46.80\00:17:50.21 What's the name of your village? 00:17:50.24\00:17:54.81 You don't know where you live? 00:17:54.84\00:17:56.32 This is Agbelite, isn't it? 00:18:00.54\00:18:04.08 Now she is decided that she's gonna show us 00:18:04.11\00:18:06.15 where she lives 00:18:06.18\00:18:07.43 and so we wanted to take you to Nardi's house 00:18:07.46\00:18:10.08 and to see how her Katutubo home is in for her. 00:18:10.11\00:18:14.60 Is your mother home at your house? No. 00:18:14.63\00:18:18.93 Your father, tatay. 00:18:18.96\00:18:21.33 Your tatay or your babae? 00:18:21.36\00:18:24.40 Her mother passed away. Oh, okay. 00:18:24.43\00:18:27.44 So you want to go to your house? 00:18:27.47\00:18:29.93 Let's go. 00:18:29.96\00:18:32.70 I've been coming to Agbelite for many years, 00:18:32.73\00:18:34.66 so I know this village really well. 00:18:34.69\00:18:38.82 I let you go first. After you, ma'am. 00:18:38.85\00:18:41.25 This is her typical Katutubo home. 00:18:58.12\00:19:00.44 I guess the father, 00:19:00.47\00:19:01.56 they call tatay is not feeling too good. 00:19:01.59\00:19:04.59 ( speaking in foreign language ) 00:19:04.62\00:19:08.52 And he's got a nice house here. 00:19:08.55\00:19:12.11 Shall I go in? Okay. 00:19:12.14\00:19:15.24 Oh, she is been really shy. 00:19:15.27\00:19:17.62 This is a traditional Katutubo home. 00:19:17.65\00:19:19.63 The family will sleep together on one bed here. 00:19:19.66\00:19:23.10 And this is sister. 00:19:23.13\00:19:27.53 ( speaking in foreign language ) 00:19:27.56\00:19:31.62 And they do their cooking like this. 00:19:31.65\00:19:33.25 This is the kitchen table. 00:19:33.28\00:19:34.98 And the typical patch roof here. 00:19:35.01\00:19:37.63 And then sometimes they'll have like another bedroom, 00:19:37.66\00:19:40.16 like up here, where the family will sleep. 00:19:40.19\00:19:42.34 So this actually house has a couple of different bedrooms. 00:19:42.37\00:19:45.85 And then I'm not really quite sure what this room is, 00:19:45.88\00:19:50.37 they have a couple of little rooms here, 00:19:50.40\00:19:51.61 where they have some different things in it, 00:19:51.64\00:19:53.17 but you can see how simple they live, 00:19:53.20\00:19:54.90 they have like, a dirt floor, cooking with wood inside. 00:19:54.93\00:19:59.08 And really, just really simple construction, 00:19:59.11\00:20:01.49 also these lumbers made with chainsaw. 00:20:01.52\00:20:04.16 And it's a fairly hardwood that. 00:20:04.19\00:20:07.89 So it's just a standard typical Katutubo home. 00:20:07.92\00:20:10.85 Some times, it could be like five, six children 00:20:10.88\00:20:12.92 and mother and father living in a place like this. 00:20:12.95\00:20:15.68 Today is Friday morning 00:21:31.11\00:21:32.29 and we're going to drive all the way over to Sablayan 00:21:32.32\00:21:34.51 to visit Louie and Abel the Prison Ministry for Sabbath. 00:21:34.54\00:21:37.77 This is a little bit of a Deja vu, 00:21:37.80\00:21:39.36 because probably about five, six, seven years ago, 00:21:39.39\00:21:41.91 we did exactly the same thing on video, 00:21:41.94\00:21:43.62 except we were driving a beat up little van 00:21:43.65\00:21:46.68 that we borrowed from our friend. 00:21:46.71\00:21:48.28 And we really question weather or not 00:21:48.31\00:21:49.82 it was gonna make it all the way over there or not. 00:21:49.85\00:21:51.95 But now we're driving Laymen Ministries 00:21:51.98\00:21:53.65 little ranger pickup truck 00:21:53.68\00:21:54.82 which we are being blessed with here. 00:21:54.85\00:21:56.30 So we're gonna check out what's happening 00:21:56.33\00:21:57.72 with the prison ministry and we're gonna show you 00:21:57.75\00:21:59.52 just a few sites along the way on the drive 00:21:59.55\00:22:01.25 all the way down to Sablayan. 00:22:01.28\00:22:02.64 About 10 years ago, when we used to do this 00:22:23.12\00:22:24.95 drive to Sablayan, we take the buses 00:22:24.98\00:22:27.18 and about two thirds of this road was gravel 00:22:27.21\00:22:30.39 and it was terrible. 00:22:30.42\00:22:31.45 You would have to have a cloth to put over your mouth 00:22:31.48\00:22:33.37 and the dust was just building up. 00:22:33.40\00:22:34.99 By the time you got there, 00:22:35.02\00:22:36.19 you really need to take a quick rest, 00:22:36.22\00:22:38.33 just to get the dirt off your body. 00:22:38.36\00:22:39.72 In the Philippines, agriculture is a very big part 00:22:56.65\00:22:59.27 of their culture, 00:22:59.30\00:23:01.04 much of its sinners around planting 00:23:01.07\00:23:02.80 and harvesting rice, which is a main staple here. 00:23:02.83\00:23:05.87 Another common agricultural product 00:23:26.60\00:23:28.63 in the Philippines is corn. 00:23:28.66\00:23:30.65 A good part of the corn harvest is used to feed livestock. 00:23:38.37\00:23:42.03 The green kernels are laid out on a flat surface 00:23:42.06\00:23:44.45 like a basketball court or a highway to fully dry. 00:23:44.48\00:23:48.17 This way the corn can be stored for a longer period of time. 00:23:48.20\00:23:51.14 On Sabbath morning, we took Laymen Ministries' 00:24:31.87\00:24:34.25 miracle Jeepney to the prison. 00:24:34.28\00:24:36.21 We call it a miracle Jeepney, 00:24:36.24\00:24:37.80 because it is proven itself indestructible over the years, 00:24:37.83\00:24:41.52 even being swamped once in a river for nearly two days. 00:24:41.55\00:24:46.21 This is a regular routine every Sabbath 00:24:46.24\00:24:48.57 as lay member from churches in the surrounding areas 00:24:48.60\00:24:51.14 are picked up to go help minister 00:24:51.17\00:24:53.24 and participate in the prison church services 00:24:53.27\00:24:55.86 with the inmates. 00:24:55.89\00:24:59.24 ( singing in foreign language ) 00:24:59.27\00:25:03.92 My name is Abel Miralles. 00:25:18.97\00:25:21.17 I have a wife and two daughters. 00:25:21.20\00:25:23.99 I work in the prison ministry by the Laymen Ministries. 00:25:24.02\00:25:28.43 I've been working with the Laymen Ministries 00:25:28.46\00:25:31.67 in the prison ministry about 13 years. 00:25:31.70\00:25:36.20 I've been involved with the prison ministry 00:25:36.23\00:25:38.61 for about 12-years now. 00:25:38.64\00:25:42.58 The area of the prison facilities 00:25:42.61\00:25:46.31 is about 62,000 acres. 00:25:46.34\00:25:50.18 It's a very huge facility. 00:25:50.21\00:25:52.52 The objective of prison ministry 00:25:52.55\00:25:54.66 is to educate inmates spiritually 00:25:54.69\00:25:59.42 because we want to recover 00:25:59.45\00:26:02.29 their lost moral and spiritual aspects. 00:26:02.32\00:26:06.60 Every Saturday from the Sabbath School program 00:26:06.63\00:26:08.49 down to the hour of worship service, 00:26:08.52\00:26:12.22 they are the ones doing the program alone. 00:26:12.25\00:26:15.45 As we teach the inmates 00:26:15.48\00:26:16.63 there are consistent discipleship happening 00:26:16.66\00:26:20.72 because of the evening Bible study inside the dormitory 00:26:20.75\00:26:25.79 where the inmates are teaching their fellow inmates 00:26:25.82\00:26:29.20 and also the things that they are learning 00:26:29.23\00:26:31.68 when we are around. 00:26:31.71\00:26:33.83 That's one of the great factors that we should consider. 00:26:33.86\00:26:38.82 The inmates come and go but as the inmates go inside 00:26:38.85\00:26:46.25 when they were released they went out as a missionary. 00:26:46.28\00:26:51.62 There are inmates who have been released 00:26:51.65\00:26:53.99 and they are living now outside the prison, 00:26:54.02\00:26:56.51 most of them are in the central part of the Philippines, 00:26:56.54\00:27:00.48 and we have communication with each other, 00:27:00.51\00:27:03.74 especially during Friday evening they send text messages 00:27:03.77\00:27:10.64 telling that they are in the church 00:27:10.67\00:27:15.55 attending the vesper 00:27:15.58\00:27:17.90 and greeting us "Happy Sabbath!" 00:27:17.93\00:27:19.96 It's very rewarding to hear 00:27:19.99\00:27:24.70 that after the inmates were released 00:27:24.73\00:27:27.08 they still continue with their faith. 00:27:27.11\00:27:28.79 According to 2 Peter 3:18 "Grow in grace 00:27:28.82\00:27:34.72 and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." 00:27:34.75\00:27:37.06
