I'm Jeff Reich and I'd like you to come with me on a journey 00:00:39.87\00:00:42.20 as I revisit just some of the evidences of my faith, 00:00:42.24\00:00:45.11 especially, regarding Noah and the flood story. 00:00:45.14\00:00:49.01 In swale layer here you could see like 00:00:49.04\00:00:50.71 all different kinds of small seashells. 00:00:50.78\00:00:52.71 They're compressed together 00:00:52.75\00:00:54.08 and this is right at the top of the Mesa 00:00:54.15\00:00:55.62 here in the Goosenecks. 00:00:55.65\00:00:57.32 Eruption in Mount St. Helens gave scientists 00:00:57.35\00:00:59.12 the opportunity to study what happens 00:00:59.15\00:01:00.66 when a catastrophe hits an area such as this. 00:01:00.69\00:01:03.83 When the water rushed over these falls, 00:01:03.86\00:01:05.19 it was ten times the size of Niagara 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.40 and what is known to be 00:01:07.40\00:01:08.73 the largest waterfall in existence. 00:01:08.76\00:01:10.83 All the water that came flowing down through this area 00:01:10.87\00:01:13.40 went down through the Scablands of Eastern Washington 00:01:13.44\00:01:15.80 and right down to that drainage system 00:01:15.84\00:01:17.37 in the Columbia River right out to the Pacific Ocean. 00:01:17.41\00:01:21.74 As Noah and his family came off the ark, 00:01:21.78\00:01:23.75 they stood in absolute horror as they looked around 00:01:23.81\00:01:25.85 at the devastation of the world. 00:01:25.88\00:01:27.68 Sadly, they knew this was the consequence of sin. 00:01:27.72\00:01:31.29 And I believe right here at the Grand Canyon 00:01:31.32\00:01:32.99 is probably one of the greatest testimonies 00:01:33.02\00:01:34.89 that prove the flood story. 00:01:34.92\00:01:36.26 The story of Noah and the flood 00:01:44.40\00:01:45.73 is extremely important for us today. 00:01:45.77\00:01:47.47 It points backwards to a time where God judged the world. 00:01:47.50\00:01:50.47 And it points forward to a time 00:01:50.54\00:01:51.87 where God will judge the world again. 00:01:51.91\00:01:53.61 The evidences are all around us 00:01:53.64\00:01:55.34 so much so that all will be without excuse. 00:01:55.38\00:01:58.91 We're outside the city of Vilkaviskis. 00:02:10.23\00:02:12.13 Now, we are in Lithuania. 00:02:12.16\00:02:13.50 This time we're gonna be watching 00:02:13.53\00:02:14.83 what some of the Bible workers are doing here, 00:02:14.86\00:02:16.20 we'll be visiting with Pastor Arunas 00:02:16.23\00:02:17.57 at his little church, a church group 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.53 and we'll be traveling around the country of Lithuania 00:02:19.57\00:02:21.47 showing you what Laymen Ministries 00:02:21.50\00:02:22.84 is doing here in this country. 00:02:22.87\00:02:24.21 Laymen Ministries has a long history here in Lithuania. 00:03:08.68\00:03:10.89 We actually came here in 1993, 00:03:10.92\00:03:12.89 so we've been working here for-- 00:03:12.92\00:03:14.42 oh, going on 15 years now. 00:03:14.46\00:03:16.32 A lot of people say, well, how did you 00:03:16.36\00:03:17.69 ever come to this country of Lithuania? 00:03:17.73\00:03:20.13 How did Laymen Ministries get involved? 00:03:20.20\00:03:22.20 And it's kind of an interesting story 00:03:22.23\00:03:23.73 because I remember back in the early 90s 00:03:23.77\00:03:26.13 we were working in Albania, Romania and Bulgaria, 00:03:26.17\00:03:28.97 and I was studying in one of my books-- 00:03:29.00\00:03:31.44 Was sharing this idea about expanding your horizons 00:03:31.47\00:03:35.48 and I'm thinking, Lord, how should I expand 00:03:35.51\00:03:37.88 the horizons of Laymen Ministries. 00:03:37.91\00:03:40.22 And that night I walked to bed and I'm not into dreams 00:03:40.28\00:03:43.35 and claiming to be a prophet or anything 00:03:43.39\00:03:45.29 but the weirdest thing happened. 00:03:45.32\00:03:47.79 I was praying, "It's okay, Lord, 00:03:47.82\00:03:49.16 if you want us to expand our horizons, we'll do that." 00:03:49.19\00:03:51.63 In the middle of the night, I woke up 00:03:51.66\00:03:53.36 and I heard a voice in my head say, go to Lithuania. 00:03:53.40\00:03:55.80 I've never heard of the country Lithuania 00:03:55.83\00:03:57.93 in my whole life. 00:03:57.97\00:03:59.30 And so the next morning when I got up, I was curious. 00:03:59.33\00:04:01.34 I got out my Atlas 00:04:01.37\00:04:02.94 and sure enough I found up by Belarus and Poland, 00:04:02.97\00:04:06.04 up in the Baltic countries, 00:04:06.07\00:04:07.41 this little country called Lithuania. 00:04:07.48\00:04:08.91 I go wow, there is a country called Lithuania. 00:04:08.94\00:04:11.71 And two days later after that I got this phone call by a boy 00:04:11.75\00:04:16.08 and he said, "Hello, Jeff." 00:04:16.12\00:04:17.72 He said, "Have you ever thought about 00:04:17.75\00:04:19.09 coming to my country Lithuania?" 00:04:19.12\00:04:20.79 He was a student from Weimar College. 00:04:20.86\00:04:22.49 I said, "Well, yeah, you know, I've actually been thinking 00:04:22.52\00:04:24.89 about going to Lithuania a lot." 00:04:24.93\00:04:26.80 And this young man connected me 00:04:26.83\00:04:29.36 with a man called Remus Sir Binschus 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.13 and in about six weeks later we had our airplane tickets 00:04:32.17\00:04:34.84 and we came to Lithuania. 00:04:34.87\00:04:36.20 And that was the beginning of the whole Lithuanian project 00:04:36.24\00:04:39.31 First we saw the need to publish literature 00:04:39.34\00:04:41.38 as books and tracks are amazing tools 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.24 to reach people with the truth. 00:04:43.31\00:04:45.55 We helped establish 00:04:45.58\00:04:46.92 the very first Adventist publishing house 00:04:46.98\00:04:49.02 with Remus Sir Binschus. 00:04:49.05\00:04:51.82 Soon we were publishing thousands of books and tracks, 00:04:51.85\00:04:54.59 titles such as the Desire of Ages, 00:04:54.62\00:04:56.56 The Great Controversy, Christ Object Lessons 00:04:56.59\00:04:59.23 and more with over 130,000 books and tracks 00:04:59.26\00:05:02.93 printed over the last 15 years. 00:05:02.96\00:05:05.77 We soon found we had another dilemma, 00:05:05.80\00:05:07.67 how to distribute this literature. 00:05:07.70\00:05:09.80 That's the start of Laymen Ministries' 00:05:09.84\00:05:11.74 Youth and Missions Program. 00:05:11.77\00:05:13.88 Working together with Kevin and Kathy Paige, 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.88 we organized an effective work 00:05:15.91\00:05:17.75 that was instrumental in church growth 00:05:17.78\00:05:19.35 across the country. 00:05:19.38\00:05:21.85 We sent over young people like Jonathan Peebles, 00:05:21.88\00:05:24.49 Joshua Miller, Shannon Parker and Jeremy Caulkins 00:05:24.52\00:05:27.36 who trained Lithuanian youth how to sell books door-to-door. 00:05:27.39\00:05:31.06 The program became a great success. 00:05:31.09\00:05:33.50 They opened the doors in a country 00:05:33.53\00:05:34.93 that had been closed by communism. 00:05:34.93\00:05:37.03 These young people were the pioneers of the church 00:05:37.07\00:05:39.77 speaking in home churches, sharing the truth 00:05:39.80\00:05:41.94 and distributing literature throughout Lithuania. 00:05:41.97\00:05:44.27 Lithuania is situated in Northern Europe 00:05:49.38\00:05:51.45 in an area called the Baltics 00:05:51.48\00:05:52.98 with Russia to the east and Poland to the south. 00:05:53.01\00:05:55.58 And it has a population of about 3.5 million people. 00:05:55.62\00:05:59.95 Lithuania has been one of the most 00:06:00.09\00:06:01.56 occupied countries in all of Europe, 00:06:01.59\00:06:03.46 yet on the other hand, in the earlier centuries 00:06:03.49\00:06:05.73 when Vytautas the Great was king, 00:06:05.76\00:06:07.86 it occupied the territories of present day Belarus, 00:06:07.86\00:06:11.20 Ukraine and parts of Poland and Russia. 00:06:11.23\00:06:13.67 By the end of the 14th century, 00:06:13.74\00:06:15.57 Lithuania stretched across a substantial part of Europe 00:06:15.60\00:06:18.67 from the Baltic to the Black Sea. 00:06:18.71\00:06:21.21 It was also the only remaining Pagan country of Europe 00:06:21.24\00:06:23.85 until converted by the sword to Catholicism. 00:06:23.88\00:06:28.78 Today, while growing more and more secular like 00:06:28.82\00:06:31.25 much of Europe, the Catholic Church 00:06:31.29\00:06:33.15 is the state recognized religion. 00:06:33.19\00:06:38.29 Life in Lithuania is difficult 00:06:38.33\00:06:40.03 especially with the growing worldwide recession. 00:06:40.10\00:06:42.90 Unemployment is at all time highs. 00:06:42.93\00:06:44.90 It has some of the highest rates 00:06:44.93\00:06:46.60 in all of Europe for alcoholism, 00:06:46.63\00:06:48.74 depression, and suicide. 00:06:48.77\00:06:51.17 In the cities, people are crowded 00:06:51.21\00:06:52.54 into these small block of flats 00:06:52.57\00:06:54.34 or what we call apartment house complexes. 00:06:54.38\00:06:57.01 Life in the country is difficult. 00:06:57.05\00:06:59.08 The people survive by growing food 00:06:59.11\00:07:00.78 and keeping it in store for the long winters. 00:07:00.85\00:07:04.32 On this particular trip, we're going to show you 00:07:04.35\00:07:06.09 what the Bible workers 00:07:06.12\00:07:07.49 that are being sponsored by Laymen Ministries 00:07:07.52\00:07:08.86 are doing working on a one-to-one 00:07:08.89\00:07:10.23 with people in their homes. 00:07:10.26\00:07:11.59 Plus, we're gonna take you 00:07:11.63\00:07:12.96 to one of the poorest orphanages in Lithuania 00:07:12.99\00:07:15.20 and share with you how we are sharing 00:07:15.23\00:07:18.00 clothing and books and things like that with the children 00:07:18.03\00:07:20.57 and also with the administrative staff. 00:07:20.64\00:07:23.61 On this trip, we flew into Vilnius, the capital 00:07:47.30\00:07:49.56 and drove straight to the city of Kaunas 00:07:49.60\00:07:51.43 to meet the Bible workers and the church leaders 00:07:51.47\00:07:53.80 to hold our annual training session. 00:07:53.84\00:07:57.71 Our Bible workers and pastors 00:07:57.74\00:07:59.07 are located in every region of this country. 00:07:59.11\00:08:01.91 Meetings like these bring new ideas 00:08:01.94\00:08:03.88 and encouragement to the workers. 00:08:03.91\00:08:05.71 The Bible workers cross various cultural boundaries 00:08:05.75\00:08:08.22 by also reaching Polish and Russian speaking people. 00:08:08.25\00:08:12.79 Pastor Arunas with his wife Neringa 00:08:12.82\00:08:14.72 helped coordinate Laymen Ministries work 00:08:14.76\00:08:16.46 across Lithuania. 00:08:16.49\00:08:17.93 They live in the small city of Vilkaviskis. 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.53 Besides being a fulltime pastor, 00:08:20.56\00:08:22.10 Arunas holds training seminars for the Bible workers 00:08:22.13\00:08:24.67 and keeps in contact with them 00:08:24.70\00:08:26.03 to provide encouragement and counsel. 00:08:26.07\00:08:28.44 They also organize summer youth meetings 00:08:28.47\00:08:30.21 and oversee the work in many of the orphanages. 00:08:30.24\00:08:32.94 Arunas also helped start this small church in the city 00:08:32.97\00:08:35.48 where there had been no previous Adventist presence. 00:08:35.51\00:08:38.68 We bought it several years ago and we're remodeling every year 00:08:38.71\00:08:42.95 and last year we were working again 00:08:42.98\00:08:45.79 outside the church building and we just painted it 00:08:45.82\00:08:48.82 and the roof has changed and the windows 00:08:48.86\00:08:51.96 and this year we are working inside the building. 00:08:51.99\00:08:55.03 The work is difficult as people 00:08:55.06\00:08:56.63 are not very often open to new ideas, 00:08:56.67\00:08:59.00 especially outside of Catholic tradition. 00:08:59.03\00:09:02.87 After resting up, we drove all the way up 00:09:02.90\00:09:04.64 by the Lithuanian border 00:09:04.67\00:09:06.01 to the small village of Daunorai 00:09:06.04\00:09:07.81 to meet with two of our Bible workers 00:09:07.84\00:09:09.44 named Julius and Roma. 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.45 They live on a small farm which they use as their outpost 00:09:11.48\00:09:14.15 to reach the nearby cities. 00:09:14.18\00:09:15.92 They also use their farm as a quiet country retreat, 00:09:15.95\00:09:18.75 holding summer and winter programs 00:09:18.79\00:09:20.39 for some of the children from the nearby orphanage. 00:09:20.42\00:09:23.02 This is Julius, he would say Lulius, right? 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.59 Lulius in Lithuanian and Roma, they have been Bible workers 00:09:26.63\00:09:29.83 for Laymen Ministries for eight years. 00:09:29.86\00:09:31.43 Roma has Bible studies with some of the neighbors, 00:09:45.41\00:09:47.65 such as this lady. 00:09:47.68\00:09:49.22 They also hold group Bible studies at their home, 00:09:49.25\00:09:51.62 as well as in the nearby city of Birzai. 00:09:51.65\00:09:57.63 Roma shares with her neighbor friend every week 00:09:57.66\00:09:59.53 in a personal one-on-one Bible study. 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.10 The test of time has proven this to be 00:10:02.13\00:10:03.83 one of the most effective ways of leading a person to Christ 00:10:03.87\00:10:07.14 and making solid church members. 00:10:07.20\00:10:09.10 Our next stop is to visit another Bible worker 00:10:12.71\00:10:14.88 by the name of Daiva. 00:10:14.91\00:10:16.81 Just got to Silale, we're at Daiva's house 00:10:16.85\00:10:19.48 and Daiva's been a Bible worker with us for-- 00:10:19.51\00:10:23.15 How many years now? 00:10:23.18\00:10:24.55 Many years. "Many years," she says. 00:10:28.32\00:10:30.96 We're gonna see what she's doing here 00:10:30.99\00:10:32.36 while we're in Silale and then we'll be going 00:10:32.39\00:10:35.10 to church here tomorrow morning. 00:10:35.13\00:10:37.00 Bible studies like these are happening 00:10:55.75\00:10:57.35 with Laymen Ministries Bible workers 00:10:57.42\00:10:58.95 all across Lithuania. 00:10:58.99\00:11:01.19 These Bible studies have brought about 00:11:01.22\00:11:02.59 hundreds of baptisms over the last 15 years 00:11:02.62\00:11:05.39 and have been one of the most effective 00:11:05.43\00:11:07.30 outreach methods in this country. 00:11:07.30\00:11:10.03 You know, they are just finishing 00:11:10.07\00:11:11.40 up their Bible study here 00:11:11.43\00:11:12.77 and this is what it's all about. 00:11:12.80\00:11:14.50 It's the Bible workers coming into people's homes 00:11:14.54\00:11:16.87 and making friends with people and sharing the word of God, 00:11:16.91\00:11:20.18 they just got done-- having a Bible study 00:11:20.24\00:11:22.28 about the meaning of life 00:11:22.31\00:11:24.11 and the importance of the Christian experience 00:11:24.15\00:11:27.28 and having relationship with Christ 00:11:27.32\00:11:28.95 and how it can give you life and it's really-- 00:11:28.98\00:11:33.09 this is really what it's all about, 00:11:33.12\00:11:34.86 coming here and making friends 00:11:34.89\00:11:36.32 and sharing the Bible with people. 00:11:36.36\00:11:41.06 Pastor Arunas, 00:12:04.09\00:12:05.42 who is the Director for Laymen Ministries 00:12:05.45\00:12:06.79 here in Lithuania had a unique experience 00:12:06.82\00:12:08.76 with this brother by the name Arunas, 00:12:08.79\00:12:10.93 so both of their names are Arunas. 00:12:10.96\00:12:13.50 But Arunas, when he was a young boy, 00:12:13.53\00:12:15.30 this Arunas, when he was a young boy, 00:12:15.33\00:12:16.87 he was an altar boy for the Catholic Church. 00:12:16.93\00:12:19.53 When he grew up, like many Lithuanian people, 00:12:19.57\00:12:21.47 he fell away from his faith 00:12:21.50\00:12:23.51 and stopped practicing Catholicism. 00:12:23.57\00:12:25.97 He became a building contractor and he became married, 00:12:26.01\00:12:28.68 he started traveling back and forth to Norway 00:12:28.71\00:12:30.81 working over there 00:12:30.85\00:12:32.21 and he wasn't happy with his life 00:12:32.25\00:12:33.58 because they were drinking and partying quite a bit 00:12:33.62\00:12:35.52 and he finally decided, he wanted to make some changes. 00:12:35.55\00:12:38.22 So he stopped drinking alcohol 00:12:38.25\00:12:40.12 and his wife wasn't very happy with that 00:12:40.16\00:12:42.49 and so she started living a party lifestyle 00:12:42.52\00:12:45.63 and he started going away from that. 00:12:45.66\00:12:47.00 And she finally left him 00:12:47.60\00:12:48.93 and they went through a divorce. 00:12:48.96\00:12:50.30 He came back to Lithuania, shattered, 00:12:50.33\00:12:52.40 looking for work as a building contractor. 00:12:52.43\00:12:55.00 It turned out the Lord led him to a situation 00:12:55.04\00:12:57.44 where he was helping to remodel 00:12:57.47\00:12:59.17 a Seventh-day Adventist Church member's home. 00:12:59.21\00:13:01.58 And one day he heard them over talking about 00:13:01.61\00:13:03.98 religious things and he started asking questions 00:13:04.05\00:13:05.98 and this led, of course, to these church members 00:13:06.01\00:13:08.28 giving him several books. 00:13:08.32\00:13:10.02 One book they gave to him was the book Great Controversy 00:13:10.09\00:13:13.19 and he read this book and he read several other books 00:13:13.22\00:13:15.36 and he started having questions. 00:13:15.39\00:13:16.73 So he called Pastor Arunas on the telephone 00:13:16.76\00:13:19.16 and very soon they started 00:13:19.19\00:13:20.70 having Bible studies just like this. 00:13:20.73\00:13:23.13 Just last year in September when water was freezing cold, 00:13:23.16\00:13:27.80 he was baptized into Christ and then after that, 00:13:27.84\00:13:31.41 he started dedicating himself to helping Pastor Arunas 00:13:31.44\00:13:34.51 remodel the old church here in Vilkaviskis. 00:13:34.54\00:13:37.55 And this is what it's all about. 00:13:37.61\00:13:40.52 People leading people to Christ, teaching to teach, 00:13:40.58\00:13:44.15 so that other people too 00:13:44.19\00:13:45.62 will in turn, turn around and be able to share 00:13:45.65\00:13:47.76 what they've learned about Christ with somebody else. 00:13:47.79\00:13:53.66 After we left Daunorai, 00:13:53.70\00:13:55.26 we headed towards the city of Siauliai. 00:13:55.30\00:13:57.50 Along the way, we visited the historic Hill of Crosses. 00:13:57.53\00:14:01.10 The history behind the spot dates back to the 18th century 00:14:01.14\00:14:04.81 when people started placing crosses here 00:14:04.84\00:14:06.57 for those who were killed 00:14:06.61\00:14:07.94 in the uprisings against the Russians. 00:14:07.98\00:14:10.25 This hill took on more significance 00:14:10.28\00:14:11.78 after World War II 00:14:11.81\00:14:13.15 when the occupying Russians tried to bulldoze the hill 00:14:13.18\00:14:15.78 at least three times. 00:14:15.82\00:14:17.49 The defiant Lithuanians used it to demonstrate 00:14:17.52\00:14:19.72 their allegiance to their original identity, 00:14:19.75\00:14:21.99 religion, and heritage. 00:14:22.02\00:14:24.13 Today the number of crosses is unknown 00:14:24.16\00:14:26.03 but estimations put it at over 50,000. 00:14:26.06\00:14:28.70 Our ministry has a long history 00:14:54.59\00:14:56.16 with this church in Siauliai as our workers, 00:14:56.19\00:14:58.43 both national and from America have had a big part 00:14:58.46\00:15:01.66 in helping this church become established. 00:15:01.70\00:15:04.43 We're in the city of Siauliai 00:15:04.47\00:15:05.80 and we're gonna go to church here this morning. 00:15:05.83\00:15:08.14 Siauliai church Chas had this house 00:15:08.17\00:15:09.67 that was renovated into a church 00:15:09.70\00:15:11.04 for quite a number of years now. 00:15:11.07\00:15:12.74 This morning, the emphasis is going to be on the harvest, 00:15:12.77\00:15:15.98 yeah, because it's cold and it's October 00:15:16.01\00:15:18.11 and it's harvest time, and one thing you'll notice 00:15:18.15\00:15:21.35 is that a lot of the people here dressed really warm, 00:15:21.38\00:15:24.42 the church isn't heated very well. 00:15:24.45\00:15:26.86 Some of the places are heated pretty good 00:15:26.89\00:15:28.36 but there has been some places 00:15:28.39\00:15:29.72 where we go to church on Sabbath here where-it's, 00:15:29.76\00:15:31.93 you can see your breath inside the building. 00:15:31.96\00:15:34.40 But they have a really active church here in Siauliai. 00:15:34.46\00:15:38.10 I'm looking forward to speaking to the people here today. 00:15:38.13\00:15:42.80 At first, it was in the living room 00:15:42.84\00:15:44.27 of the church member's house. 00:15:44.31\00:15:45.87 Later, the house was purchased, remodeled 00:15:45.91\00:15:47.98 and now is packed every Sabbath. 00:15:48.01\00:15:49.94 So when Christ comes for the great harvest, 00:15:50.01\00:15:52.45 what is He coming for? People? 00:15:52.48\00:15:54.48 Yes. 00:15:54.52\00:15:55.85 So, all the people are gonna be harvesting. 00:15:55.88\00:15:58.89 This particular Sabbath day, 00:15:58.92\00:16:00.32 we're having a harvest celebration. 00:16:00.39\00:16:02.19 I spoke on the last great harvest 00:16:02.22\00:16:04.06 and how Christ works in our hearts 00:16:04.09\00:16:05.63 to have our characters come to fruition. 00:16:05.66\00:16:07.76 In preparation for that last great harvest, 00:16:07.83\00:16:10.77 it was great to reconnect with many old friends again. 00:16:10.80\00:16:13.54 What they are doing here is something very unusual, 00:16:20.68\00:16:22.61 after the church service, since this is the harvest time 00:16:22.64\00:16:24.91 they are giving food to all the church members. 00:16:24.95\00:16:27.82 We have a nice arrangement here with different kinds of breads 00:16:27.85\00:16:31.05 and some soy patties and tomatoes. 00:16:31.09\00:16:35.02 It's kind of different to be honest with you. 00:16:35.06\00:16:38.79 It's been five years since I was in Lithuania, 00:16:38.83\00:16:42.06 I missed a lot of things from here 00:16:42.10\00:16:43.53 but one of the things that I missed the most 00:16:43.57\00:16:45.47 is the food and the drink. 00:16:45.50\00:16:51.31 In all the countries 00:16:51.34\00:16:52.67 we always traveled to, we like to show you 00:16:52.71\00:16:54.04 the different types of cultural foods that they prepare. 00:16:54.08\00:16:56.34 In Lithuania, one of the most famous foods is the potato 00:16:56.38\00:17:01.48 and in fact, it's very dear to my heart 00:17:01.52\00:17:03.35 because I'm from the state of Idaho 00:17:03.42\00:17:05.49 in the good old USA and everybody knows that-- 00:17:05.52\00:17:07.92 Lives to close to Idaho 00:17:07.96\00:17:09.29 that Idaho is famous for famous potatoes. 00:17:09.32\00:17:12.79 And in Lithuania, they cook a zillion 00:17:12.83\00:17:15.63 different types of potato dishes 00:17:15.66\00:17:17.27 but she's gonna be preparing today 00:17:17.30\00:17:20.44 a dish called cepelinai. 00:17:20.47\00:17:22.37 Now, I think that it really should be called zeppelini. 00:17:22.40\00:17:26.01 For years I always pronounced it that 00:17:26.04\00:17:27.64 because I thought that the finished product 00:17:27.68\00:17:29.51 kind of looked like a zeppelin. 00:17:29.54\00:17:30.88 Now you've probably seen those big German balloons 00:17:30.95\00:17:33.01 you know, they were called zeppelins. 00:17:33.05\00:17:34.58 Well, the finished product is similar to that 00:17:34.62\00:17:36.79 and it's quite a, an elaborate process. 00:17:36.82\00:17:38.72 One of the first things that they do apparently 00:17:45.39\00:17:47.50 is they peel potatoes 00:17:47.50\00:17:49.30 and she soaks them in some water. 00:17:49.33\00:17:54.47 It's a unique combination 00:17:54.50\00:17:56.37 because she's gonna mix together 00:17:56.40\00:17:58.37 raw potatoes and boiled potatoes, 00:17:58.41\00:18:01.74 they're like mashed potatoes, you'll see there. 00:18:01.78\00:18:04.01 Here you have some soft cheese. 00:18:04.08\00:18:05.71 This cheese is a, yeah it's-- what they call fresh cheese? 00:18:05.75\00:18:09.48 It's next step up from cottage cheese. 00:18:09.52\00:18:12.65 It's kind of a firm, soft cheese, 00:18:12.69\00:18:14.29 kind of like feta cheese but with no seasoning in it. 00:18:14.32\00:18:17.26 This is gonna go inside the zeppelini. 00:18:17.29\00:18:20.26 So you'll see that she is doing this, 00:18:20.33\00:18:22.13 she's gonna mix this cooked mashed potatoes 00:18:22.16\00:18:24.43 together with raw grated potatoes 00:18:24.47\00:18:26.43 and a potato puree 00:18:26.47\00:18:27.87 which she'll be using a machine for it a little bit. 00:18:27.90\00:18:32.27 So you can see it's just raw potatoes 00:18:32.31\00:18:34.08 that are just whizzed up 00:18:34.11\00:18:35.44 kind of almost like what we'd use 00:18:35.48\00:18:36.81 in a Champion juicer in the States. 00:18:36.85\00:18:40.25 Interesting. 00:18:40.32\00:18:42.22 The next step Neringa is using here 00:18:42.25\00:18:44.22 as she's taking that, the raw potatoes 00:18:44.29\00:18:47.46 that was made into a puree 00:18:47.49\00:18:49.19 and she's putting it to like, piece of cheese cloth 00:18:49.22\00:18:51.29 and straining all the liquid out of it 00:18:51.33\00:18:53.53 so she's ending up with 00:18:53.60\00:18:54.93 kind of like a starchy looking material here. 00:18:54.93\00:18:57.70 It's just raw potato starch. 00:18:57.73\00:19:00.17 So this is potato juices, this looks like a bear 00:19:00.20\00:19:02.87 and I'm gonna have Jon, our cameraman, 00:19:02.90\00:19:06.74 demonstrate drinking this stuff. 00:19:06.81\00:19:09.84 I'm not gonna do it. 00:19:09.88\00:19:11.41 Okay, here it goes. 00:19:11.45\00:19:12.78 This is raw potato juice. 00:19:23.36\00:19:26.83 It's got to be at least 37 different nutrients. 00:19:26.86\00:19:30.87 What do you think? 00:19:30.90\00:19:33.10 It's good. 00:19:33.13\00:19:34.47 Are you serious? 00:19:34.50\00:19:35.87 Might need a little salt but other than that, it's good. 00:19:35.90\00:19:39.37 It's good. 00:19:39.41\00:19:40.78 Now after these things are all rolled together 00:19:42.34\00:19:44.81 with the stuffing inside, 00:19:44.85\00:19:46.61 she carefully places them in boiling water, 00:19:46.65\00:19:48.88 so in a sense what they are is a potato dumpling. 00:19:48.92\00:19:52.62 But it's the most unique potato dumpling 00:19:52.65\00:19:54.26 I've ever seen in my life. 00:19:54.29\00:19:56.52 She's mixing up a special sauce 00:19:56.56\00:19:58.83 and has eggs and butter and some salt, 00:19:58.86\00:20:00.96 and some different things and uses 00:20:01.00\00:20:02.80 sparingly on top of your potato zeppelini 00:20:02.83\00:20:06.13 and put it o n that plate. 00:20:06.17\00:20:11.97 Some people like just I've mentioned to you, 00:20:12.01\00:20:13.44 they take oil 00:20:13.48\00:20:14.81 and they just dump a ton of oil on it. 00:20:14.84\00:20:16.24 She's using a little bit of butter sparingly 00:20:16.28\00:20:18.41 with some salt and little bit of sour cream 00:20:18.45\00:20:21.38 and that will make a nice flavored sauce 00:20:21.42\00:20:23.85 for the top of it. 00:20:23.89\00:20:25.22 This is the finished product. This is the zeppelini. 00:20:25.25\00:20:27.96 Cepelinai, they call it. 00:20:27.99\00:20:33.26 It's delicious. Really good. 00:20:33.29\00:20:35.86 Now, I tell you what, 00:20:35.90\00:20:37.23 two of these will stick to your ribs. 00:20:37.30\00:20:42.10 Today, we're gonna go over and meet with the director 00:20:42.14\00:20:44.91 from one of the orphanages. 00:20:44.94\00:20:46.27 We're loading up all the stuff 00:20:46.31\00:20:47.64 to take over to the orphanages today 00:20:47.68\00:20:49.41 and when we meet the director, 00:20:49.44\00:20:50.78 we're gonna over to that market place 00:20:50.81\00:20:52.51 and buy some clothes and things. 00:20:52.55\00:20:53.95 The next morning, we headed south about 00:20:53.98\00:20:55.58 40 miles to the small city of Siminus 00:20:55.62\00:20:58.29 where we met with some of the ladies 00:20:58.32\00:20:59.65 who work at the local orphanage. 00:20:59.69\00:21:03.76 In the larger cities, the orphanages usually receive 00:21:03.83\00:21:06.23 some kind of help from other European countries 00:21:06.26\00:21:09.10 while the smaller orphanages out in the country 00:21:09.13\00:21:11.87 are in a desperate situation. 00:21:11.90\00:21:17.01 After meeting with the director and the administrative staff, 00:21:17.07\00:21:20.04 it was decided these kids needed warm winter clothing, 00:21:20.08\00:21:22.94 shoes, and other basic clothes. 00:21:22.98\00:21:25.08 Together, we went with some of the workers 00:21:25.11\00:21:26.78 on a shopping spree to get what they needed. 00:21:26.82\00:21:28.98 These ladies are really into this orphanage, 00:21:46.40\00:21:48.57 if you watch the expression on them 00:21:48.60\00:21:50.44 as they are purchasing things, one girl is going, 00:21:50.47\00:21:52.94 oh, very good, it's great, it's good, 00:21:52.97\00:21:54.84 you know, because she's actually able 00:21:54.88\00:21:56.21 to get some clothing for the kids. 00:21:56.24\00:21:57.71 They have been having a real problem 00:21:57.75\00:21:59.75 with being able to have quality clothing 00:21:59.78\00:22:01.32 and to be able to have 00:22:01.35\00:22:02.68 just socks and underwear and things like that. 00:22:02.72\00:22:05.12 So it's nice to see that the administrative staff 00:22:05.15\00:22:09.32 are really into the children and they are not doing this 00:22:09.36\00:22:12.46 just as a job but they are doing 00:22:12.49\00:22:13.83 'cause their hearts are into it. 00:22:13.90\00:22:15.20 It's interesting 'cause this lady 00:22:37.62\00:22:38.99 who is actually giving us about five coats for free 00:22:39.02\00:22:42.49 and she's crying, I don't know if you're noticing this or not, 00:22:42.52\00:22:44.73 but she's actually got tears in her eyes 00:22:44.76\00:22:46.86 saying that she wants to help out. 00:22:46.90\00:22:53.13 Apparently her son was recently killed 00:22:53.17\00:22:55.20 with some kind of incident 00:22:55.24\00:22:56.57 and she's got some problems at home 00:22:56.64\00:22:58.74 and apparently she just got a real sensitive 00:22:58.77\00:23:00.28 and kinder heart and she wants to help out 00:23:00.31\00:23:02.34 so she's donating a lot of these coats 00:23:02.38\00:23:04.75 and then we're gonna buy something from her too. 00:23:04.78\00:23:10.79 Basically he's gonna come back to visit this lady 00:23:10.82\00:23:13.29 again to give some literature to her. 00:23:13.36\00:23:16.16 Okay, what's next on the list? 00:23:16.19\00:23:17.86 You get this, we're not only just buying clothes for orphans 00:23:28.24\00:23:30.87 but we're giving them spiritual literature 00:23:30.91\00:23:32.61 and this is a real open door for being able to share Christ 00:23:32.64\00:23:36.31 in the orphanages with the administrative people 00:23:36.34\00:23:39.55 and the kids there. 00:23:39.58\00:23:41.25 In this particular orphanage, they have children 00:23:41.28\00:23:43.35 who are all the way up to the age of 21 years of age 00:23:43.39\00:23:45.45 between the full ages of four, six, 00:23:45.49\00:23:47.62 all the way to 21 years of age. 00:23:47.66\00:23:49.22 Wow! Look at the stuff. 00:23:57.33\00:23:59.77 I'm happy. I'm happy. Good. 00:23:59.80\00:24:03.91 Back in 1995, two missionaries 00:24:09.68\00:24:12.18 who worked with Laymen Ministries, 00:24:12.21\00:24:13.55 Joshua Miller and Jonathan Peeble 00:24:13.62\00:24:15.52 saw how destitute things were in the orphanage 00:24:15.55\00:24:18.02 by where they lived. 00:24:18.05\00:24:19.39 They soon started searching out 00:24:19.42\00:24:20.76 other poor orphanages around the country. 00:24:20.79\00:24:26.16 Thank you. 00:24:26.19\00:24:27.73 Laymen Ministries made 00:24:27.76\00:24:29.06 this an extension of our project, 00:24:29.10\00:24:30.53 providing clothing, shoes, 00:24:30.57\00:24:32.30 and spiritual food for their souls, as well. 00:24:32.33\00:24:37.81 To this day, we've continued to be involved 00:24:37.84\00:24:39.67 with the ministry to these poor orphanages. 00:24:39.71\00:24:47.62 Small orphanages located 00:24:47.65\00:24:48.98 in the more rural areas such as this one struggle 00:24:49.02\00:24:51.39 just to keep the heat turned on. 00:24:51.42\00:24:54.36 The director told me they would literally 00:24:54.39\00:24:55.86 not turn the heat on until the 1st of November. 00:24:55.89\00:24:58.83 While we were there in October, 00:24:58.86\00:25:00.26 the building was a chilly 55 degrees inside. 00:25:00.33\00:25:05.90 The children lacked basic warm clothing, 00:25:05.93\00:25:08.24 under garments, and food was limited as well. 00:25:08.27\00:25:10.84 Children and staff also received from us Bibles, 00:25:16.75\00:25:19.61 books, and Bible study materials. 00:25:19.65\00:25:24.49 The kids at this orphanage are the outcasts of society. 00:25:24.52\00:25:27.76 Most here are handicapped, born with birth defects, 00:25:27.79\00:25:30.73 or have some emotional issues from poor 00:25:30.76\00:25:33.03 and even abusive parenting. 00:25:33.06\00:25:35.50 Many orphans are here because of their parents 00:25:35.53\00:25:37.47 who are alcoholic or simply have abandoned them. 00:25:37.53\00:25:44.17 The director Mrs. Elena Downiski 00:25:44.21\00:25:46.64 showed us the giving tree of people 00:25:46.68\00:25:48.34 who have donated before. 00:25:48.38\00:25:50.15 On the wall was Joshua and Inga Miller's name 00:25:50.21\00:25:52.15 and Pastor Arunas as well, all Laymen Ministries workers. 00:25:52.18\00:25:58.49 As we walked around the facility, 00:25:58.52\00:26:00.32 I was impressed that while they were poor, 00:26:00.39\00:26:02.62 the building was kept clean and orderly. 00:26:02.66\00:26:05.09 They had classrooms where they engaged 00:26:05.13\00:26:06.83 in special activities for the children. 00:26:06.86\00:26:10.77 All the children were very happy that we came 00:26:10.80\00:26:13.44 and all showed a great enthusiasm. 00:26:13.47\00:26:17.87 When it came time to distribute some of the items, 00:26:17.91\00:26:20.11 the kids became very excited. 00:26:20.18\00:26:22.48 Other items were distributed in a more discretionary manner. 00:26:22.51\00:26:28.48 Today, Laymen Ministries continues to support 00:26:37.99\00:26:40.70 Bible workers and pastors, publishing literature, 00:26:40.73\00:26:43.83 and orphanage outreach. 00:26:43.87\00:26:45.57 We have a vision of expanding into radio 00:26:45.60\00:26:47.50 and television broadcast as well as seminars 00:26:47.54\00:26:50.37 held across the country. 00:26:50.41\00:26:52.37 Please pray with us 00:26:52.41\00:26:53.74 for this little country of Lithuania. 00:26:53.78\00:26:57.41
