refers to death is this way

Death is referred to as a sleep.

In fact, when you read the story

about Jesus Christ's
dear friend Lazarus you see,

the same picture emerging.

He Jesus saith

Our friend
Lazarus is fallen asleep.

But I will go and wake him up.

Then said His disciples--

If he's asleep
Lord, he will get well.

Jesus meant
that Lazarus had died

but they thought
he met natural sleep.

"Lazarus is dead."

So when scripture death
is refereed to as a sleep

and that's exactly what happened

people go to their
graves and they rest.

This reminds me
of the abbreviation

that you have probably
seen on tomb stones RIP

it literally
means rest in peace.

In fact, this is
really what's happening.

The dead are not in the flames
of hell or the bliss of heaven

or disembodied spirits
floating around in the cosmos.

The scripture clearly says,

Neither have they
any more a reward."

Today, nearly all
Christians believe

and teach that when we die,

we ascend immediately to heaven.

But it hasn't
always been this way

even the protestant
reformers had a different belief

protestant churches today.

The most well known reformer
Martin Luther had this to say.

younger I used to wonder

The scriptures go onto say

If you stop and think about it
if people go to heaven or hell

what's the point of them

coming back later at
the time of the resurrection

your body and to be judged.
