We're taking you again to the Philippines 00:00:48.61\00:00:50.85 which is located in Southeast Asia 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.38 in the South China Sea. 00:00:53.42\00:00:54.75 Quarterly exams just got over at the high school. 00:01:20.48\00:01:23.11 And so all the kids last week went back to their families 00:01:23.14\00:01:25.45 in the villages and this week we're heading out 00:01:25.48\00:01:28.05 and going to spend a whole week in the villages 00:01:28.08\00:01:30.02 because kids are actually going to be peaking out there. 00:01:30.05\00:01:32.25 So they're taking the place with the actual teacher. 00:01:32.29\00:01:34.66 So it's kind of a training program that we have here 00:01:34.69\00:01:36.59 to help, start helping the students feel when 00:01:36.62\00:01:39.66 and how to take the responsibility 00:01:39.69\00:01:41.36 of feeling comfortable in a classroom. 00:01:41.40\00:01:43.57 So we pack everything in this little van 00:01:43.60\00:01:46.10 and started out at 4 o'clock this morning 00:01:46.13\00:01:49.40 and we're heading out here in about 10 minutes. 00:01:49.44\00:01:52.01 Our Layman Ministries' III boat is the life connection 00:02:08.12\00:02:11.36 to the remote villages where we have schools. 00:02:11.39\00:02:13.90 The only other way to get to these villages 00:02:13.93\00:02:16.16 is a six-hour hike over Mount Calavite 00:02:16.20\00:02:18.77 all in various directions 00:02:18.80\00:02:20.30 depending on the village you want to go to. 00:02:20.34\00:02:22.87 Over the years we've had different boats 00:02:22.90\00:02:24.64 but this one is the biggest and the best of them all. 00:02:24.67\00:02:28.28 Soon we were all loaded and setting sail. 00:02:32.25\00:02:34.48 Days like this do not give an honest representation 00:02:37.12\00:02:39.55 of what the South China Sea can be like, 00:02:39.59\00:02:41.96 today it's calm, smooth, with little wind or waves 00:02:41.99\00:02:45.46 but at other times there can be 12 to 15-foot swells 00:02:45.49\00:02:49.33 pounding waves with gale force winds 00:02:49.36\00:02:51.87 blowing water over the entire boat. 00:02:51.90\00:02:54.44 It's days like that you don't want to be 00:02:54.47\00:02:56.50 out in the boat. 00:02:56.54\00:02:58.17 The boat ride is a good time for Jim Webb, 00:02:58.21\00:03:00.48 our Layman Ministries 00:03:00.51\00:03:01.84 Philippines project coordinator 00:03:01.88\00:03:03.65 and I to catch up on the project. 00:03:03.68\00:03:05.71 We're headed from Mamburao 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.08 to the village called Binuangan. 00:03:07.12\00:03:09.35 It takes about four hours to get there by boat. 00:03:09.38\00:03:11.69 This village is on the coastline 00:03:11.72\00:03:13.25 at the base of Mount Calavite 00:03:13.29\00:03:15.32 with a river flowing by one side. 00:03:15.36\00:03:17.29 Soon as we get the boat tied off, 00:03:29.34\00:03:30.97 we start unloading all the passengers and cargo. 00:03:31.01\00:03:34.18 Calm days like this make unloading relatively easy 00:03:34.21\00:03:37.48 but when there are big waves, wow, it's super hard 00:03:37.51\00:03:40.82 and even dangerous to unload. 00:03:40.85\00:03:42.62 The student missionaries, teachers and the kids 00:03:45.49\00:03:47.82 are always excited to see Jim when he arrives. 00:03:47.86\00:03:50.66 Years ago, when the boat would arrive, 00:03:50.69\00:03:52.63 the children would all go and hide, 00:03:52.66\00:03:54.86 their fears are now gone. 00:03:54.90\00:03:56.50 This new boat is pretty amazing. 00:04:13.62\00:04:14.95 When we left the port at Mamburao this morning 00:04:14.98\00:04:17.32 it was all the way down to, down to the words on the side, 00:04:17.35\00:04:21.32 it was really riding low in water 00:04:21.36\00:04:23.79 because it had 1.2 tons of steel on there 00:04:23.83\00:04:27.10 and 106 sacks of cement. 00:04:27.13\00:04:29.73 So it's like a huge amount of weight, 00:04:29.76\00:04:31.20 plus all the supplies for the villages 00:04:31.23\00:04:33.44 plus there was 12 or 13 passengers on board. 00:04:33.47\00:04:36.04 So, this new boat is really critical 00:04:36.07\00:04:38.07 for our operations here 00:04:38.11\00:04:39.44 and it's really proven to be a workhorse. 00:04:39.47\00:04:41.38 This is actually only the second time it's been out 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.85 after it got swept out to sea and was damaged really bad. 00:04:43.88\00:04:47.02 We're running a new rebuild engine right now too. 00:04:47.05\00:04:49.38 So you can see all the cement here, 00:04:49.42\00:04:51.45 looks like a huge amount of weight this thing carries. 00:04:51.49\00:04:55.22 Everyone does their part to get the supplies 00:05:00.33\00:05:02.60 up to the school campus. 00:05:02.63\00:05:03.97 Marie, one of our longer term missionaries 00:05:08.14\00:05:10.74 was busy dealing with a student that had a bad cut in his leg. 00:05:10.77\00:05:14.58 Marie is from the US and has a heart 00:05:14.61\00:05:16.85 for medical missionary work. 00:05:16.88\00:05:18.21 Missionary life here in Binuangan 00:05:23.92\00:05:26.59 goes from being a teacher, to a parent, 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.12 to a doctor, to a cook. 00:05:29.16\00:05:31.53 Actually it can be anywhere it's not in the mission 00:05:31.56\00:05:35.00 what do you think as Africa or Philippines 00:05:35.03\00:05:38.97 or somewhere remotes like in remote places, 00:05:39.00\00:05:41.47 but missionary life can be anywhere. 00:05:41.50\00:05:45.37 As missionary you have to be well rounded. Yeah. 00:05:45.41\00:05:50.31 To everything there is an America, 00:05:50.35\00:05:52.51 no difference except we have the luxury 00:05:52.55\00:05:54.62 of being in the jungle. 00:05:54.65\00:05:56.08 You know how to do manual labor 00:05:56.12\00:05:59.49 instead of teaching, 00:05:59.52\00:06:01.16 you know, should know how to do carpentry 00:06:01.19\00:06:04.33 and anything that, yeah, 00:06:04.36\00:06:06.73 any other things that needs to be done. 00:06:06.76\00:06:10.77 And all the challenges, let's not forget that, 00:06:10.80\00:06:14.44 but is the challenges 00:06:14.47\00:06:16.00 that that makes us better missionaries here 00:06:16.04\00:06:19.87 because we are here for one purpose 00:06:19.91\00:06:23.18 and one purpose only is to serve God 00:06:23.21\00:06:26.58 through taking care of the children He has. 00:06:26.61\00:06:29.32 Camille will do in English. 00:06:32.09\00:06:34.39 Ah, yeah. 00:06:34.42\00:06:35.76 When Jim comes to the village, 00:06:35.79\00:06:37.13 he's communicating with the teachers 00:06:37.16\00:06:38.53 about school tests, problem children, 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.80 and answering questions. 00:06:41.83\00:06:43.60 This is a time where the teachers 00:06:43.63\00:06:44.97 can share their problems, 00:06:45.00\00:06:46.37 both personal and dealing with the school in the village. 00:06:46.40\00:06:49.17 You know that he is the son of the Bejari. 00:06:49.20\00:06:51.87 Yes. 00:06:51.91\00:06:53.24 These are the grades for the first periodical, 00:06:53.27\00:06:56.24 which is like first quarter exams 00:06:56.28\00:07:00.08 from two of Daryll students, 00:07:00.12\00:07:02.72 one we had tremendous problems 00:07:02.75\00:07:04.92 with the young man last year reference attitude. 00:07:04.95\00:07:10.26 And he's showing me his grade three math test, 00:07:10.29\00:07:14.90 he scored 98 on. 00:07:14.93\00:07:17.40 And this young lady 00:07:17.43\00:07:19.00 in a science grade 2 science scorednine... 00:07:19.03\00:07:21.77 who was a dropout last year. 00:07:21.80\00:07:23.24 Who was a dropout last year scored 99. 00:07:23.27\00:07:27.08 So we can't give up. 00:07:27.11\00:07:29.74 Early the next morning the staff 00:07:36.69\00:07:38.19 and our high school students come together 00:07:38.22\00:07:40.06 for prayer, worship, and orientation, 00:07:40.09\00:07:43.02 especially today as this is the first day 00:07:43.06\00:07:45.99 of student teaching. 00:07:46.03\00:07:47.90 The high school students will get a firsthand experience 00:07:47.93\00:07:50.57 of what it's like to be an actual teacher. 00:07:50.60\00:07:54.14 The students always arrive early at the school 00:07:54.17\00:07:56.54 to help clean up the campus grounds. 00:07:56.57\00:07:58.77 All the children carry responsibilities. 00:07:58.81\00:08:01.81 Also know how clean the children are. 00:08:01.84\00:08:04.31 They all bathe before coming to school. 00:08:04.35\00:08:06.95 And at the school they often get better morning meal 00:08:06.98\00:08:09.62 if the parents are up in the mountains, 00:08:09.65\00:08:11.75 and they do other things like brush their teeth. 00:08:11.79\00:08:13.76 Before classes start, the students have 00:08:22.96\00:08:24.90 a flag raising ceremony. 00:08:24.93\00:08:28.00 This morning, there are special instructions 00:08:28.04\00:08:30.21 given regarding the high school students 00:08:30.24\00:08:32.01 teaching many of the classes this week. 00:08:32.04\00:08:35.48 After this, they're all dismissed 00:08:35.51\00:08:37.18 to go to their individual classes. 00:08:37.21\00:08:38.95 Okay. And... 00:08:43.52\00:08:45.69 This is your typical Katutubo village. 00:09:09.21\00:09:11.45 The word Katutubo means indigenous, 00:09:11.48\00:09:14.22 and this particular indigenous tribe 00:09:14.25\00:09:16.02 is the Orion tribe. 00:09:16.05\00:09:17.72 I remember when we first started coming here 00:09:17.75\00:09:19.69 22 years ago, 00:09:19.72\00:09:22.06 things haven't changed that much in the village, 00:09:22.09\00:09:24.06 but they're a little bit better, 00:09:24.09\00:09:25.43 but the kids were like little animals, honestly, 00:09:25.46\00:09:28.93 they had a gloss over look on their eyes 00:09:28.96\00:09:31.03 and they were terribly afraid of us, 00:09:31.07\00:09:33.77 but now the kids are really opening up. 00:09:33.80\00:09:35.87 We have kids going on to high schools, 00:09:35.90\00:09:37.94 but this is a way that they live. 00:09:37.97\00:09:39.91 The Orion tribe is basically a nomadic tribe. 00:09:39.94\00:09:43.81 And as you notice right now, 00:09:43.85\00:09:45.71 this village is like a ghost town. 00:09:45.75\00:09:47.42 There's nobody here because they're up 00:09:47.45\00:09:49.35 doing their rice harvesting in the mountains right now. 00:09:49.38\00:09:52.02 That means the kids are here in their houses by themselves, 00:09:52.05\00:09:55.66 taking care of themselves, getting ready for school, 00:09:55.69\00:09:57.43 they're taking their baths, brushing their teeth. 00:09:57.46\00:09:59.49 They do a lot of that right up at the mission house, 00:09:59.53\00:10:01.96 but this kind of gives you 00:10:02.00\00:10:03.33 an idea where these kids are coming from. 00:10:03.37\00:10:04.70 These are not Filipinos. 00:10:04.73\00:10:06.37 These are indigenous tribal people. 00:10:06.40\00:10:08.54 And they were here long, long before the Filipino 00:10:08.57\00:10:12.44 or the Malay people or the Spanish people 00:10:12.47\00:10:14.94 ever came here. 00:10:14.98\00:10:16.31 I've seen pictures of them from way back in the 1940s. 00:10:16.34\00:10:19.81 And the 1940s pictures and pictures of today, 00:10:19.85\00:10:23.39 like we're taking today are not all that different, 00:10:23.42\00:10:25.92 but things are getting better. 00:10:25.95\00:10:27.92 The progress is a slow work, but it's a blessed work too 00:10:27.96\00:10:31.29 and we have high hopes for the high school kids 00:10:31.33\00:10:34.76 to be able to come back and be teachers here 00:10:34.80\00:10:36.43 and be missionaries in their own village. 00:10:36.46\00:10:39.37 You can see the houses how they're constructed here, 00:10:39.40\00:10:41.54 really rough sawn lumber and lumber is getting 00:10:41.57\00:10:45.17 really scarce here to find 00:10:45.21\00:10:47.51 because it's illegal actually be cutting trees down, 00:10:47.54\00:10:50.11 but the tribal people sometimes still do it 00:10:50.15\00:10:52.65 and they cut it up and they make these 00:10:52.68\00:10:54.02 really crude boards to build their houses out of, 00:10:54.05\00:10:57.32 and then they have this typical grass roofs on it 00:10:57.35\00:11:00.76 which I think it's called cogon, but it's, 00:11:00.79\00:11:03.63 it keeps the places pretty cool in when the sun's out, 00:11:03.66\00:11:06.80 and right now it's October and it's been unusually hot 00:11:06.83\00:11:12.13 'cause usually when you're here in October, 00:11:12.17\00:11:13.50 it's raining more and it's a lot cooler out, 00:11:13.54\00:11:16.30 but it gives you an idea just to kind of see, 00:11:16.34\00:11:18.47 you know, how they live like 00:11:18.51\00:11:19.84 this is actually a what they call their kitchen 00:11:19.87\00:11:22.58 and they burn wood and charcoal in here. 00:11:22.61\00:11:24.65 And it's interesting how they, 00:11:24.68\00:11:26.31 the native people make charcoal here, 00:11:26.35\00:11:27.68 they'll cut down trees that are green, 00:11:27.72\00:11:29.85 and they'll cut it up in pieces, 00:11:29.88\00:11:31.85 and they'll make a big fire pit and build a fire 00:11:31.89\00:11:34.02 and then when all the coals are nice and hot and stuff, 00:11:34.06\00:11:35.72 they throw a whole bunch more wood on top of it, 00:11:35.76\00:11:38.03 and then cover it with banana leaves and dirt 00:11:38.06\00:11:39.73 and things like that and let it smolder 00:11:39.76\00:11:41.36 for about 48 hours until it goes out, 00:11:41.40\00:11:43.73 and then when they dig it up, 00:11:43.77\00:11:45.10 they have this beautiful hard wood charcoal 00:11:45.13\00:11:47.50 and that's what they typically cook on 00:11:47.54\00:11:49.04 for the rice cookers and such. 00:11:49.07\00:11:50.41 You can see here they're cooking breakfast 00:11:57.11\00:11:59.71 on the outside kitchen and whole family will sleep 00:11:59.75\00:12:02.88 in a little house like this one right here. 00:12:02.92\00:12:04.59 It's hard for some people 00:12:07.62\00:12:08.96 to even imagine living this way, 00:12:08.99\00:12:10.63 but our missionaries have it quite nice 00:12:10.66\00:12:12.96 because we have cinder block or cement houses 00:12:12.99\00:12:15.43 for them with cement floors, 00:12:15.46\00:12:16.80 but a lot of these people live with dirt floors, 00:12:16.83\00:12:18.97 very, very primitive. 00:12:19.00\00:12:20.94 And as we came in on the boat, you saw how this one's 00:12:20.97\00:12:23.67 particularly really sits right on the coast 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.81 and there's a big river here. 00:12:25.84\00:12:28.14 And that big river oftentimes during rainy season floods, 00:12:28.18\00:12:31.48 and they'll get big storms 00:12:31.51\00:12:32.85 and so the mouth of the river at the bay changes constantly, 00:12:32.88\00:12:36.15 the river will go out this way sometimes, 00:12:36.18\00:12:37.82 the river go out that way. 00:12:37.85\00:12:39.49 And my daughter actually worked in this village 00:12:39.52\00:12:41.96 for three and a half years. 00:12:41.99\00:12:43.56 And she told me sometimes when they have those big storms 00:12:43.59\00:12:45.83 is absolutely frightening. 00:12:45.86\00:12:47.20 This peaceful river can turn quickly 00:12:49.96\00:12:52.37 into a raging torrent, 00:12:52.40\00:12:53.94 meeting huge waves crashing in from the sea during a storm. 00:12:53.97\00:12:58.64 Because of all the illegal tree cutting 00:12:58.67\00:13:01.08 and the slash and burn done up in the mountains 00:13:01.11\00:13:03.55 flash flooding has become a real problem. 00:13:03.58\00:13:05.61 Because the village of Binuangan 00:13:09.92\00:13:11.55 is located next to the steep sides of the mountain, 00:13:11.59\00:13:14.39 the village lies mostly on a flat strip of land 00:13:14.42\00:13:17.33 right next to the river. 00:13:17.36\00:13:18.69 This red line shows 00:13:22.46\00:13:23.80 where the village's river bank used to be 00:13:23.83\00:13:26.13 and how the river has progressively eaten away. 00:13:26.17\00:13:29.97 To protect the village from further erosion, 00:13:30.01\00:13:32.71 our ministry organized building large gabions 00:13:32.74\00:13:35.61 to divert the water away from the banks 00:13:35.64\00:13:37.65 along the village. 00:13:37.68\00:13:39.08 Much of this was done by hand with a local government 00:13:39.11\00:13:41.98 providing gabion cages and even wages 00:13:42.02\00:13:44.92 for the tribal members who helped. 00:13:44.95\00:13:46.49 We plan to build another one of these 00:13:54.43\00:13:56.13 right next to the village 00:13:56.16\00:13:57.50 just to make sure we stop the erosion. 00:13:57.53\00:13:59.77 To save the least, this was a huge undertaking. 00:13:59.80\00:14:02.70 All the hard work of operating this project 00:14:07.68\00:14:10.21 is worth it when you see these young children 00:14:10.25\00:14:12.68 with their eyes sparkling learning about God 00:14:12.71\00:14:15.98 and getting the basic educational skills they need. 00:14:16.02\00:14:20.62 So 15 correct. 00:14:20.66\00:14:22.96 Multiplied by... Binuangan. Yeah. 00:16:06.90\00:16:08.23 We're tired. 00:16:08.26\00:16:10.77 We're going in a small native boat 00:16:10.80\00:16:12.77 so we're wrapping all the bags and everything up 00:16:12.80\00:16:14.60 inside a plastic, and then green or rice bag. 00:16:14.64\00:16:19.04 Hopefully, the oceans not gonna be too rough this morning. 00:16:19.07\00:16:21.08 So hopefully don't get everything all wet 00:16:21.11\00:16:23.38 including ourselves. 00:16:23.41\00:16:24.75 We were very thankful that the seas 00:16:47.37\00:16:49.14 were relatively calm that morning. 00:16:49.17\00:16:51.14 As we navigated around the tip of the island of Mindoro 00:16:51.17\00:16:54.68 on our way to the remote village of Agbalite. 00:16:54.71\00:16:57.31 This is the village of Agbalite. 00:17:36.82\00:17:38.42 I first came here around 1994 and 1995 00:17:38.45\00:17:41.62 so that was like about 22, 23 years ago, 00:17:41.66\00:17:45.03 we hiked over the mountains from Pinagbyanan 00:17:45.06\00:17:47.36 and over to here 00:17:47.40\00:17:48.73 and it was actually a lot thicker back then 00:17:48.76\00:17:50.57 and there was only just a small group 00:17:50.60\00:17:52.93 of these nipa huts down by the ocean. 00:17:52.97\00:17:55.37 Somebody previous to us coming here had carved out 00:17:55.40\00:17:58.17 in the forest over there, a small little area 00:17:58.21\00:18:00.78 where they started building a small Adventist Church. 00:18:00.81\00:18:03.81 And that was kind of like the beginning of our endeavor 00:18:03.85\00:18:09.62 to try to come to this area. 00:18:09.65\00:18:11.25 And with over the next couple of years, 00:18:11.29\00:18:12.62 we came here and we secured some land up there. 00:18:12.65\00:18:15.52 And we're the current mission house 00:18:15.56\00:18:17.56 and school and everything is out. 00:18:17.59\00:18:19.29 And we built a school here. 00:18:19.33\00:18:21.56 And a lot of changes. 00:18:21.60\00:18:23.06 If you look over top of this village, 00:18:23.10\00:18:25.03 looking at it from the air down, 00:18:25.07\00:18:27.14 you'll see that it's actually 00:18:27.17\00:18:28.50 a pretty sprawling community now 00:18:28.54\00:18:30.27 and there's a lot of houses here. 00:18:30.31\00:18:31.67 It's actually like a small town. 00:18:31.71\00:18:34.08 It's actual good size village. 00:18:34.11\00:18:36.48 And some people have moved in 00:18:36.51\00:18:37.85 and they started a little store over there 00:18:37.88\00:18:39.48 and you're hearing generators running 00:18:39.51\00:18:40.85 during the day. 00:18:40.88\00:18:42.22 And we've had some real blessings 00:18:42.25\00:18:43.99 and some real challenges in this village over the years. 00:18:44.02\00:18:46.69 And we realized that it's gonna take 00:18:46.72\00:18:48.19 probably a whole generation to start to change the way 00:18:48.22\00:18:51.33 things are as far as the thinking 00:18:51.36\00:18:54.23 and the cleanliness and the hygiene 00:18:54.26\00:18:55.60 and such with the people in this village. 00:18:55.63\00:18:58.67 My wife came here a number of years ago 00:18:58.70\00:19:00.90 with my youngest daughter Neselle 00:19:00.94\00:19:02.27 and taught here for almost seven months. 00:19:02.30\00:19:04.37 In fact, all my daughters at one time or another 00:19:04.41\00:19:06.78 have come here to the Philippines project. 00:19:06.81\00:19:08.61 My daughter Chris I actually went over 00:19:08.64\00:19:10.58 and was in Binuangan and kind of help 00:19:10.61\00:19:12.18 was one of the pioneers in that village over there 00:19:12.21\00:19:14.15 and I think she taught for a while in Pinagbyanan 00:19:14.18\00:19:16.32 and two she was and then my daughter Theresa 00:19:16.35\00:19:18.79 came here and spent one of her summer out 00:19:18.82\00:19:21.26 from the school year coming here 00:19:21.29\00:19:22.62 and helping Jim and Moni, 00:19:22.66\00:19:24.19 but there's a lot of challenges here 00:19:24.23\00:19:25.76 in a village like this. 00:19:25.79\00:19:27.33 And now we're starting to see a lot of these kids 00:19:27.36\00:19:30.60 move on to the high school 00:19:30.63\00:19:32.30 and we have really good attendance. 00:19:32.33\00:19:34.14 I think they said they have 53 kids 00:19:34.17\00:19:36.67 in school here this year. 00:19:36.71\00:19:38.67 And a lot of young children 00:19:38.71\00:19:40.51 and we have good teachers here, 00:19:40.54\00:19:42.71 but, you know, as a community starts to grow 00:19:42.74\00:19:45.11 these people are like a seminomadic people. 00:19:45.15\00:19:47.38 And the whole idea of starting to establish homes 00:19:47.42\00:19:49.82 and staying in an area to have their kids in school 00:19:49.85\00:19:53.42 is being a real challenge 00:19:53.46\00:19:54.79 because the parents wanna kind of like migrate around 00:19:54.82\00:19:58.93 and live up in the mountains. 00:19:58.96\00:20:00.30 And that makes it difficult 00:20:00.33\00:20:01.66 for their kids to attend school. 00:20:01.70\00:20:03.03 So a lot of the people have actually started to congregate, 00:20:03.06\00:20:05.73 like in villages like this one because of the school 00:20:05.77\00:20:08.40 and the parents still leave and go way up 00:20:08.44\00:20:11.07 into the mountains 00:20:11.11\00:20:12.44 and take care of their pile and rice, 00:20:12.47\00:20:14.74 but they leave their kids here unattended, 00:20:14.78\00:20:17.85 taking care of themselves 00:20:17.88\00:20:19.21 and some of them are pretty young, 00:20:19.25\00:20:20.58 and they have to feed themselves and such. 00:20:20.62\00:20:21.95 So sometimes our teachers 00:20:21.98\00:20:23.45 are helping feed the kids and stuff 00:20:23.49\00:20:25.45 because they come to school hungry. 00:20:25.49\00:20:27.19 When we arrived, the school was just about to start. 00:20:29.59\00:20:32.73 We have a beautiful campus and have recently built 00:20:32.76\00:20:35.50 more classrooms and staff housing. 00:20:35.53\00:20:37.93 We are making the newest buildings 00:20:37.97\00:20:39.50 completely termite proof and even cyclone proof 00:20:39.53\00:20:43.37 using cement and tin. 00:20:43.41\00:20:45.54 We have five classrooms to accommodate 00:20:45.57\00:20:47.71 the various age groups. 00:20:47.74\00:20:49.14 The children start their day with proper hygiene. 00:21:01.39\00:21:04.36 They all brush their teeth, and each one is required 00:21:04.39\00:21:07.03 to come to school in clean clothes and bathe. 00:21:07.06\00:21:10.47 Believe me getting them to comply with this 00:21:10.50\00:21:12.70 has been a huge undertaking, 00:21:12.73\00:21:14.77 but now from the years of operating these schools, 00:21:14.80\00:21:17.91 we are starting to see the fruits of our labors. 00:21:17.94\00:21:20.68 Start to sing Amazing Grace 00:21:20.71\00:21:24.91 O the King is coming 00:21:24.95\00:21:29.82 The King is coming 00:21:29.85\00:21:33.46 I just heard The trumpets sounding 00:21:33.49\00:21:37.69 O the King is coming 00:21:37.73\00:21:42.60 The King is coming 00:21:42.63\00:21:46.13 Praise God Praise God Praise God 00:21:46.17\00:21:52.11 He's coming for me 00:21:52.14\00:21:55.24 One teacher has some of the younger students outside 00:21:58.38\00:22:00.85 preparing for class. 00:22:00.88\00:22:02.22 Meanwhile, a student teacher, a team from our high school 00:22:07.56\00:22:10.99 is starting classes with some of the other students. 00:22:11.03\00:22:15.26 It's amazing to see what God has done 00:22:15.30\00:22:17.67 over the years with this project. 00:22:17.70\00:22:19.07 This young girl is named Lozelle. 00:22:25.81\00:22:29.04 Our desire is to train these youth 00:22:29.08\00:22:31.38 to become missionary teachers to their own tribe. 00:22:31.41\00:22:34.82 And they are, they also... 00:22:34.85\00:22:39.72 take care of that plant... 00:22:39.75\00:22:42.66 from so... 00:22:42.69\00:22:45.53 I refer to this place as the Joel Marshall house. 00:22:50.50\00:22:53.37 It's named after Joel Marshall, of course, 00:22:53.40\00:22:56.27 who was a missionary here with Laymen Ministries 00:22:56.30\00:22:58.04 for about four years. 00:22:58.07\00:22:59.54 Right before he went back to Australia 00:22:59.57\00:23:01.31 which is where he was from. 00:23:01.34\00:23:02.68 He built this place and I remember being here 00:23:02.71\00:23:04.61 and helping him do some of the finished 00:23:04.65\00:23:06.01 carpentry on it. 00:23:06.05\00:23:07.68 After a couple of years back in Australia, 00:23:07.72\00:23:09.62 he had the missionary bug and he decided 00:23:09.65\00:23:11.35 he just couldn't be content with living in Australia. 00:23:11.39\00:23:13.72 So he joined up with Laymen Ministries project 00:23:13.76\00:23:15.86 in Vanuatu with Dr. Trevolt. 00:23:15.89\00:23:17.93 They're both Australians 00:23:17.96\00:23:19.29 and worked out really good for that. 00:23:19.33\00:23:20.96 And he stayed there for about two years 00:23:21.00\00:23:22.66 and he was on some of our videos in Vanuatu. 00:23:22.70\00:23:25.40 And then he went back to Australia again, 00:23:25.43\00:23:27.57 and then he came back here. 00:23:27.60\00:23:29.50 And the reason he came back here was twofold. 00:23:29.54\00:23:32.14 One is he wanted to come back to the Philippines. 00:23:32.17\00:23:34.11 He had a lot of great memories here, 00:23:34.14\00:23:35.68 but there was also a former co-worker 00:23:35.71\00:23:37.35 that he worked with, 00:23:37.38\00:23:38.71 was still working here in this village of Agbalite, 00:23:38.75\00:23:41.12 and he wanted to marry her. 00:23:41.15\00:23:43.49 And he had the total blessing of myself and my wife 00:23:43.52\00:23:46.92 and Jim, Moni, Webb, and they were married. 00:23:46.96\00:23:49.82 They worked here for that one year, 00:23:49.86\00:23:51.66 and then they went back to Australia 00:23:51.69\00:23:53.26 and she's getting citizenship right now. 00:23:53.29\00:23:55.26 And after they get their citizenship thing 00:23:55.30\00:23:57.97 taken care of immigrant, they're planning on coming back 00:23:58.00\00:24:00.27 and working with Laymen Ministries 00:24:00.30\00:24:01.84 in one of our projects 00:24:01.87\00:24:03.20 most likely here in the Philippines. 00:24:03.24\00:24:06.07 That evening, we headed out to the village 00:24:06.11\00:24:08.01 to have children's meetings 00:24:08.04\00:24:09.61 with some of the village children. 00:24:09.64\00:24:11.61 This is a great way to bond with the village parents 00:24:11.65\00:24:14.32 and with the kids that do not attend school. 00:24:14.35\00:24:17.05 The songs and stories went well on into the night. 00:24:17.09\00:24:20.22 We were up before daylight the next morning 00:25:31.23\00:25:33.66 and at the crack of dawn, we were on another small boat 00:25:33.70\00:25:36.87 headed to the village of Pinagbyanan 00:25:36.90\00:25:38.73 where we would spend Sabbath. 00:25:38.77\00:25:42.04 Our school campus is located on a small natural harbor 00:25:42.07\00:25:45.44 at the base of Mount Calavite. 00:25:45.47\00:25:47.24 When we arrived that Friday morning, 00:25:56.92\00:25:58.85 the staff and student teachers were just starting 00:25:58.89\00:26:01.72 their morning worship and staff meeting. 00:26:01.76\00:26:04.89 My name is Sophie Spannlang, and I am from Austria. 00:26:04.93\00:26:09.30 I've been here now for almost three months. 00:26:09.33\00:26:13.67 And yeah, it's been very nice so far. 00:26:13.70\00:26:16.27 But, of course, there are also a lot of problems that appear 00:26:16.30\00:26:19.37 because the environment is so different. 00:26:19.41\00:26:22.54 The biggest, of course, is the culture. 00:26:22.58\00:26:26.28 Culture is very different here. 00:26:26.31\00:26:29.12 People just have a different style of communicating 00:26:29.15\00:26:33.99 with each other, but also the whole, 00:26:34.02\00:26:36.62 I mean, the temperature is it's very hot. 00:26:36.66\00:26:39.49 And, of course, there are not so many comfortable things. 00:26:39.53\00:26:43.43 General the luxury, but I think 00:26:43.47\00:26:44.80 this is not really a problem for me 00:26:44.83\00:26:46.57 because I was really used to go camping, 00:26:46.60\00:26:49.37 to go outside, and that's why I also like to be here 00:26:49.40\00:26:52.77 because this style of living is very simple, 00:26:52.81\00:26:56.21 but at the same time, it's very enjoyable. 00:26:56.24\00:27:01.38 Today, it is a special Sabbath. 00:27:01.42\00:27:02.75 We're having a baptism with eight people. 00:27:02.78\00:27:04.49 A couple of the people are getting baptized 00:27:04.52\00:27:06.35 are former students of ours 00:27:06.39\00:27:07.96 that made it most of the way through high school, 00:27:07.99\00:27:10.66 and then they decided they didn't want to continue on, 00:27:10.69\00:27:12.93 they came back to the village and got married. 00:27:12.96\00:27:15.00 We were always really concerned about them, 00:27:15.03\00:27:16.56 but now several years later, they've made a commitment 00:27:16.60\00:27:19.30 to wanna get baptized. 00:27:19.33\00:27:21.07 And there's another lady who is also a wife 00:27:21.10\00:27:24.41 of a public school teacher here in the area. 00:27:24.44\00:27:28.48 And she's had just an amazing conversion experience. 00:27:28.51\00:27:31.08 I guess she was gambling 00:27:31.11\00:27:32.45 and not taking care of her kids. 00:27:32.48\00:27:33.82 There was a lot of things going on. 00:27:33.85\00:27:35.28 Total change in her life. 00:27:35.32\00:27:37.02 And now she's making a commitment 00:27:37.05\00:27:38.39 for Christ today too, 00:27:38.42\00:27:39.85 so they're gonna have the baptism 00:27:39.89\00:27:41.22 down here at the ocean. 00:27:41.26\00:27:42.62
