It's a Tuesday morning here 00:00:59.15\00:01:00.49 at the medium security prison in Sablayan. 00:01:00.49\00:01:03.06 It's a maximum, medium, and minimum security prison 00:01:03.06\00:01:07.13 facility here on this 62,000-acre facility. 00:01:07.13\00:01:10.50 And today we're gonna be having baptisms. 00:01:10.50\00:01:12.40 It seems like a Sabbath but it's a Tuesday morning 00:01:12.40\00:01:14.84 and they've made special provisions for us to come here 00:01:14.84\00:01:17.01 and shoot video and see the activities for today. 00:01:17.01\00:01:20.54 (men singing solemnly) 00:01:20.54\00:01:23.78 - [Narrator] Laymen Ministries' success in this large prison 00:01:26.25\00:01:28.65 facility is due to these two dedicated workers: 00:01:28.68\00:01:31.82 They have worked with us for nearly 20 years! 00:01:34.76\00:01:37.46 Over these years we have seen lives changed 00:01:37.46\00:01:39.79 by hearts surrendered to Christ, 00:01:39.79\00:01:41.73 and we have witnessed nearly 800 baptisms. 00:01:41.73\00:01:45.37 (solemn music) 00:01:45.37\00:01:47.94 - This is also a time where we have new beginnings. 00:01:53.14\00:01:56.68 (interprets in Filipino) 00:01:56.71\00:02:00.92 - [Narrator] Several years ago, 00:02:00.92\00:02:02.22 Laymen Ministries built this church 00:02:02.22\00:02:04.02 inside the medium security section of the prison. 00:02:04.02\00:02:06.49 We shared words of encouragement with those 00:02:07.62\00:02:09.76 that were going to be baptized that morning. 00:02:09.76\00:02:12.39 - There are only two options in life. 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.50 (interprets in Filipino) 00:02:14.50\00:02:16.67 Either God is God or I'm god. 00:02:16.67\00:02:18.13 (speaking in Filipino) 00:02:19.07\00:02:22.30 Because people... 00:02:28.21\00:02:30.08 (speaking in Filipino) 00:02:30.08\00:02:31.68 Because without Christian, without Christ in our life-- 00:02:31.68\00:02:35.22 (interprets in Filipino) 00:02:35.22\00:02:37.22 - Do you want to be saved? 00:02:37.25\00:02:38.79 (interprets in Filipino) 00:02:38.79\00:02:40.22 - Yes! - Do you believe the Gospel? 00:02:40.22\00:02:42.19 (interprets in Filipino) 00:02:42.19\00:02:44.73 Do you want to be baptized? 00:02:44.73\00:02:46.56 - [Men] Yes! 00:02:46.59\00:02:48.06 - Amen. - Amen. 00:02:48.06\00:02:49.33 (praying in Filipino) 00:02:49.33\00:02:52.50 (gentle music) 00:02:52.50\00:02:55.07 - Amen! 00:02:58.21\00:02:59.04 (singing in foreign language) 00:03:01.08\00:03:04.91 - [Narrator] When we first talked about turning this 62,000 00:03:16.52\00:03:19.29 acre prison and penal farm into a Bible Training school, 00:03:19.29\00:03:22.86 it seemed impossible. 00:03:22.90\00:03:24.53 But that's exactly what has happened. 00:03:24.53\00:03:26.84 Inmates are trained to teach inmates, 00:03:26.84\00:03:29.44 and by the simple Biblical principle of teach to teach 00:03:29.47\00:03:32.57 as it says in Matthew 28:19, "Go ye therefore, and teach 00:03:32.57\00:03:37.05 "all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, 00:03:37.05\00:03:40.42 "and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 00:03:40.42\00:03:42.58 "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever 00:03:42.58\00:03:45.85 "I have commanded you." 00:03:45.85\00:03:47.19 Also in the second chapter of the Book of Mark, Mark says: 00:03:48.09\00:03:51.59 "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is 00:03:51.59\00:03:54.63 "in Christ Jesus. 00:03:54.63\00:03:55.86 "And the things that thou hast heard of me 00:03:55.86\00:03:57.80 "amongst many witnesses, the same commit thou 00:03:57.80\00:04:00.64 "to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also." 00:04:00.67\00:04:04.74 - [Pastor] Bless them in a special way. 00:04:08.38\00:04:12.08 - So when we have a baptism like this, 00:04:12.08\00:04:13.92 do you think that these guys 00:04:13.95\00:04:15.08 are really grounded in the truth? 00:04:15.08\00:04:16.72 - Jeff, to be honest with you, I think these brethren 00:04:17.99\00:04:21.26 are much better grounded in the truth 00:04:21.29\00:04:23.69 than many people who joined our churches by baptism. 00:04:23.69\00:04:28.63 The program here from the very beginning 00:04:31.47\00:04:34.90 has been teach to teach. 00:04:34.90\00:04:37.64 Our two faithful workers of almost 20 years 00:04:37.64\00:04:42.11 are training inmates to be disciples. 00:04:43.55\00:04:48.55 And they are the ones who hold the prayer meetings 00:04:48.98\00:04:53.49 and the Bible studies in the dormitories. 00:04:53.49\00:04:55.89 They're the ones who preach on Sabbath. 00:04:55.89\00:04:58.99 Of course our coworkers intermingle and teach 00:04:58.99\00:05:01.80 and help and preach also but the majority of the work 00:05:01.83\00:05:06.84 is being done exactly as the Bible says it should be done. 00:05:07.44\00:05:12.31 That is we are teaching new people who come to Christ 00:05:12.31\00:05:16.95 to go out and teach-- 00:05:16.95\00:05:18.48 - And make disciples. - And make disciples. 00:05:18.48\00:05:20.82 They are the ones bringing Him in and I remind us 00:05:20.82\00:05:24.55 that with the baptisms today we, the Layman Ministries, 00:05:24.55\00:05:29.56 prison ministry has baptized almost 800 people 00:05:30.33\00:05:35.30 from the time we were first allowed to baptize. 00:05:37.27\00:05:40.37 - Amazing. - At first 00:05:40.37\00:05:41.30 there was objection, we could not baptize, 00:05:41.30\00:05:44.34 but almost 800. 00:05:44.34\00:05:46.71 And we still are in touch with many of the inmates 00:05:48.04\00:05:50.38 who have been released who are faithful 00:05:50.38\00:05:52.68 Christians in their communities, in their families, 00:05:55.52\00:05:58.39 in their churches. 00:05:58.39\00:06:00.29 So praise God! 00:06:00.32\00:06:01.26 It is working. - That's good to hear. 00:06:01.26\00:06:03.16 - And I will also tell you, Jeff, 00:06:03.16\00:06:06.16 that with the use of the Bible, 00:06:06.16\00:06:09.66 the Amazing Facts Bible Study Guides which they allowed us 00:06:10.63\00:06:14.97 to translate into Tagalog and with Spirit of Prophecy books, 00:06:14.97\00:06:22.31 I'm not bashful to tell you that I believe 00:06:23.04\00:06:27.28 that our men here admitting that this is a captive audience, 00:06:27.32\00:06:32.32 our men here had probably read more of the Spirit 00:06:32.65\00:06:36.46 of Prophecy than most people 00:06:36.46\00:06:38.66 and the churches around the world. 00:06:38.66\00:06:41.10 And I also think it's exciting to tell that every Sabbath 00:06:41.10\00:06:48.17 there is a Sabbath service, 00:06:48.40\00:06:50.64 and each of these four facilities here in the prison. 00:06:50.64\00:06:54.44 And people who live outside the prison choose 00:06:54.44\00:07:00.42 to come to the prison to worship God. 00:07:00.42\00:07:03.39 - Yeah, amazing. 00:07:03.42\00:07:04.39 - Because they're being fed also. 00:07:04.39\00:07:06.55 - [Narrator] Laymen Ministries' Jeepney has been a faithful 00:07:08.69\00:07:10.89 workhorse for many years hauling church members 00:07:10.89\00:07:13.83 to worship with the inmates week after week. 00:07:13.83\00:07:16.46 Some times there are so many people they are riding 00:07:16.46\00:07:18.80 on the roof! 00:07:18.80\00:07:19.63 It's hard to realize how large this prison facility is, 00:07:20.47\00:07:23.87 literally having to drive from one section to another. 00:07:23.91\00:07:26.94 - We just got done being over at the medium security part 00:07:27.91\00:07:30.71 of the prison we baptized 27 men. 00:07:30.71\00:07:33.08 This is a minimum security part of the prison 00:07:33.08\00:07:35.58 and this is the baptistry. 00:07:35.58\00:07:37.69 The men will be baptized in a barrel. 00:07:37.69\00:07:39.39 It's the only accommodations we have in this 00:07:39.39\00:07:41.76 particular part of the prison facility. 00:07:41.76\00:07:43.66 (calm music) 00:07:44.63\00:07:47.03 (singing in Filipino) 00:07:50.87\00:07:54.04 And the reporter asked the same questions. 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.68 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:02.68\00:08:04.35 He said, what would you do if you were free today? 00:08:04.35\00:08:07.38 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:07.38\00:08:09.92 And the inmate asked the reporter a question. 00:08:09.92\00:08:12.92 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:12.92\00:08:16.99 Are you free? 00:08:16.99\00:08:17.86 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:18.99\00:08:20.20 And the reporter said, I'm asking the question here! 00:08:20.20\00:08:23.30 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:23.33\00:08:24.77 And the inmate said, I'm free already. 00:08:24.77\00:08:27.64 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:27.64\00:08:30.01 And the reporter says, you're not free, 00:08:30.01\00:08:31.31 you're in prison. 00:08:31.34\00:08:32.61 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:32.61\00:08:35.51 No, I'm free in Christ. 00:08:35.51\00:08:37.48 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:38.35\00:08:41.15 Jesus Christ has set me free. 00:08:41.18\00:08:43.39 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:43.39\00:08:45.52 I'm free at my heart. 00:08:45.52\00:08:47.09 (interprets in Filipino) 00:08:47.09\00:08:48.69 And he looked at the reporter and said, Are you free? 00:08:48.69\00:08:51.49 (women singing in Filipino) 00:08:51.49\00:08:55.13 - [Man] No, he will change his clothes. 00:09:09.21\00:09:09.98 - That's okay, I still wanna hug. 00:09:09.98\00:09:12.41 - We're outside of medium and maximum security part 00:09:40.18\00:09:42.58 of the Sablayan Prison. 00:09:42.58\00:09:43.61 This is our third stop. 00:09:43.61\00:09:44.91 They said there are 17 inmates here that are gonna give 00:09:44.91\00:09:46.98 their life to Christ through baptism. 00:09:46.98\00:09:49.05 These inmates not only have been studying the Bible 00:09:49.05\00:09:51.62 for themselves but in their cellblocks in the evenings 00:09:51.62\00:09:53.99 they're having group Bible studies. 00:09:53.99\00:09:55.72 I wish we could get in there and take pictures 00:09:55.72\00:09:57.46 and some of that but they won't allow us to take 00:09:57.46\00:09:59.39 video cameras in those portions of the prison. 00:09:59.39\00:10:01.66 (singing in Filipino) 00:10:03.93\00:10:07.10 - [Narrator] Lukas, a former Laymen Ministry student 00:10:18.45\00:10:19.88 missionary from Germany, who continues to return 00:10:19.91\00:10:22.75 to the Philippines, shares with the inmates. 00:10:22.75\00:10:26.96 What happens next is almost too hard to believe. 00:10:26.96\00:10:30.46 The prison officials allowed the inmates to leave the prison 00:10:30.49\00:10:33.43 with us to go to the river to be baptized! 00:10:33.43\00:10:36.03 I noticed the security guards who accompanied us 00:10:37.60\00:10:40.17 with weighted sticks wore green Laymen Ministries shirts. 00:10:40.20\00:10:44.11 When I inquired about this, 00:10:44.11\00:10:45.54 I was told they were all church members 00:10:45.54\00:10:47.64 who were previously baptized! 00:10:47.64\00:10:50.48 (calm music) 00:10:50.48\00:10:52.88 Another amazing thing that happened 00:11:18.07\00:11:19.97 was one of the inmate's wife and daughter came 00:11:20.01\00:11:22.81 and they were all baptized together! 00:11:22.81\00:11:25.61 (calm music) 00:11:25.61\00:11:28.02 I praise God for the hard work and years 00:11:32.69\00:11:34.76 of dedication by Louie and Abel. 00:11:34.76\00:11:37.13 Prison ministry is not an easy task, 00:11:37.13\00:11:39.39 and there are and have been many challenges. 00:11:39.39\00:11:42.83 And also donors, such as yourselves, 00:11:42.83\00:11:44.90 have helped with support of these workers, 00:11:44.90\00:11:47.20 along with simple provisions, 00:11:47.20\00:11:49.04 Bibles and spiritual literature. 00:11:49.04\00:11:51.47 Thank you! 00:11:51.47\00:11:52.31 (calm music) 00:11:53.81\00:11:56.78 The heart of Laymen Ministries operations takes place 00:11:56.78\00:11:59.45 on top of this mountain called Kaupawan, 00:11:59.45\00:12:02.12 which when translated literally means Bald Mountain. 00:12:02.12\00:12:05.69 It's now a campus for our indigenous academy. 00:12:05.69\00:12:08.79 When we first bought this property, 00:12:08.79\00:12:10.43 the local people asked 00:12:10.43\00:12:12.36 "Why would you want the dry bald mountain top? 00:12:12.36\00:12:14.93 "You can't grow anything up there!" 00:12:14.93\00:12:17.33 But today we have thousands of trees planted 00:12:17.33\00:12:20.07 and it's green and beautiful. 00:12:20.07\00:12:22.37 It's a picture perfect place to help young adults 00:12:22.40\00:12:24.94 to grow mentally, physically and spiritually! 00:12:24.94\00:12:27.84 To the left is our dormitory and cafeteria 00:12:27.88\00:12:30.58 and to the right is our admin building and classrooms. 00:12:30.58\00:12:33.62 The cafeteria serves as a place for not only eating 00:12:40.76\00:12:43.89 but for social interaction and worship services. 00:12:43.89\00:12:47.10 This octagon building houses several classrooms 00:12:49.63\00:12:52.47 and an administrative and accounting office. 00:12:52.47\00:12:54.87 Let me take you inside to see some of the activities 00:12:54.87\00:12:57.54 taking place today! 00:12:57.54\00:12:58.57 We have strict account procedures 00:12:59.91\00:13:01.78 which are audited regularly. 00:13:01.78\00:13:03.71 In this instance, our boat captain Mario, 00:13:03.71\00:13:06.15 is giving an account for recent repairs on our boat. 00:13:06.15\00:13:09.42 Christian Stroeck, an administrative assistant 00:13:09.42\00:13:11.92 who came to us from Switzerland, does our accounting. 00:13:11.92\00:13:14.99 When I visit this project I go over the books 00:13:16.39\00:13:18.56 to see how the funds are being handled. 00:13:18.56\00:13:20.80 I'm very proud about the level of integrity our team has. 00:13:20.80\00:13:24.13 Every peso can be accounted for. 00:13:24.13\00:13:26.40 We operate the only indigenous boarding academy 00:13:28.24\00:13:31.27 in the country of the Philippines. 00:13:31.27\00:13:33.21 God has blessed, and our students test higher 00:13:33.24\00:13:35.84 than those attending the public schools 00:13:35.84\00:13:38.15 and this is with a people group that the Filipino majority 00:13:38.15\00:13:41.28 say are not capable of learning. 00:13:41.28\00:13:43.92 - My name is Isabella Franca. 00:13:43.92\00:13:45.69 I'm from Brazil. 00:13:45.69\00:13:47.96 And I heard about this project through a friend 00:13:47.96\00:13:50.93 that owns a mission YouTube channel, 00:13:50.93\00:13:54.40 and I saw some videos of her here and so I got in touch 00:13:54.46\00:13:59.43 with her to find out a little bit more 00:13:59.67\00:14:01.57 about Laymen Ministries. 00:14:01.57\00:14:03.17 - It's actually my second year already 00:14:03.17\00:14:04.97 working here in Laymen Ministries. 00:14:05.01\00:14:06.68 It was actually a friend of mine, also my classmate before, 00:14:06.68\00:14:11.38 Ma'am Jam Mabell, who referred me. 00:14:11.38\00:14:14.68 - Well, I'm with grades seven and nine, 00:14:14.68\00:14:17.59 so I help them through English, Math, 00:14:17.59\00:14:21.29 Social Studies and Science when they take the video lessons 00:14:21.29\00:14:25.06 so I help them on that, but the actual teaching is my favorite, 00:14:25.06\00:14:28.90 which is Music Arts PE and Health. 00:14:28.90\00:14:32.03 - Currently I'm teaching grades 10, 11 and 12. 00:14:32.03\00:14:35.20 Well, here in the high school in Kaupawan, 00:14:37.21\00:14:39.94 you have to teach basically all the subjects. 00:14:39.94\00:14:42.54 Although we have video lessons already for English, 00:14:42.54\00:14:44.95 Math, Science, and Social Studies, 00:14:44.95\00:14:47.68 we still have to basically know all those subjects. 00:14:47.68\00:14:52.69 In case students have questions, we should be ready. 00:14:53.39\00:14:57.16 (speaking in Filipino) 00:14:57.19\00:15:00.13 (calm music) 00:15:00.13\00:15:02.46 - I am here to help teachers to improve their teaching style 00:15:06.30\00:15:11.31 and helping the students also to learn better. 00:15:12.61\00:15:14.84 That means sharing with them some strategies 00:15:14.84\00:15:18.31 for teaching and learning. 00:15:18.31\00:15:20.58 And actually this is a thing that I'm very passionate about 00:15:20.58\00:15:23.99 because I am a great supporter of education, 00:15:23.99\00:15:27.12 but I believe education has to be done right 00:15:27.12\00:15:29.62 in order to really make a change. 00:15:29.62\00:15:32.06 So my idea of education is very centered not only 00:15:32.06\00:15:37.03 in the Bible but also all we have from our pioneers 00:15:37.47\00:15:41.90 and so on in the sense that I believe is very important 00:15:41.90\00:15:46.01 that education is making people more autonomous 00:15:46.04\00:15:50.45 and able to think for themselves. 00:15:50.45\00:15:53.45 In the sense that when we just memorize things, 00:15:53.45\00:15:56.12 we are not really giving students a chance 00:15:56.12\00:16:00.39 to really succeed in life because they won't have 00:16:00.39\00:16:04.96 the tools to go about challenges 00:16:04.99\00:16:07.73 that will come their way and so on. 00:16:07.73\00:16:09.56 And sometimes teachers also are trained in a way 00:16:09.56\00:16:13.70 that is just a repetition of what their teachers did 00:16:13.70\00:16:17.34 in the past and so on, 00:16:17.34\00:16:18.97 so it's nice to have some time to talk 00:16:19.01\00:16:21.98 and really think about the strategies 00:16:21.98\00:16:23.78 and go through even new ways of approaching education, 00:16:23.78\00:16:28.78 and that's what I'm doing here for the next five months. 00:16:29.02\00:16:32.95 - We are very blessed here at Katutubo Excel School 00:16:34.69\00:16:37.99 to have a large enough piece of property. 00:16:39.03\00:16:42.66 Let's see, we have 38 hectares which is approximately 00:16:42.66\00:16:47.67 100 acres that belongs to the school, deeded to the school. 00:16:48.37\00:16:53.38 And we have an elevation difference 00:16:55.61\00:16:58.45 because the school buildings are up on the ridge 00:16:58.45\00:17:01.48 of a 150 meters, so that would be about 450 feet 00:17:01.48\00:17:06.29 down to a creek where we have relatively flat area 00:17:07.19\00:17:12.79 for our school garden. 00:17:12.79\00:17:14.83 And here at the garden it gives employment for the students 00:17:14.83\00:17:18.03 but also, and food for supporting the school 00:17:18.03\00:17:23.04 but also teaches the students how to grow a variety 00:17:23.47\00:17:29.74 of foods, which later our goal is that they would 00:17:29.74\00:17:34.38 duplicate that in their villages 00:17:34.38\00:17:36.62 to improve the nutritional standard of the natives 00:17:36.62\00:17:40.02 here in this area. 00:17:40.02\00:17:41.62 We are using tunnel greenhouses in addition 00:17:41.62\00:17:46.36 to our walk-in greenhouses, and we actually like 00:17:46.39\00:17:50.43 these much better. 00:17:50.43\00:17:51.70 We are using a lot of organic material 00:17:53.17\00:17:56.87 to loosen this clay soil. 00:17:56.87\00:17:59.71 It is hard as cement, in the summer time it's washed out. 00:17:59.71\00:18:04.01 It's been badly abused over the years 00:18:04.01\00:18:07.05 and we're trying to teach our students 00:18:07.08\00:18:09.52 how to recover the soil. 00:18:09.52\00:18:13.29 Now, I haven't been here for a month 00:18:13.29\00:18:15.02 but I'm going to just show you with my fingers 00:18:15.02\00:18:17.79 how easy it is for us to use just our hand 00:18:17.79\00:18:22.50 to work in this beautiful soil. 00:18:22.50\00:18:27.50 Now, in addition to a lot of compost, 00:18:27.64\00:18:30.14 which we make ourselves, and carbonized rice hulls, 00:18:30.14\00:18:34.64 we also have our own worm production, vermicast, 00:18:34.64\00:18:40.85 vermifuge. So we are trying in multiple ways to become 00:18:40.85\00:18:48.49 self-sufficient but we are super happy that we can do this. 00:18:48.49\00:18:52.36 - So you're telling me that you wanted to build a shop 00:18:54.20\00:18:56.30 here and we're talking about doin' it right here 00:18:56.30\00:18:59.60 with the containers are at? 00:18:59.60\00:19:01.17 - Yes, basically we're here coming to the end 00:19:01.17\00:19:03.47 of our road. 00:19:03.47\00:19:04.64 You know here on top there's the wind generator and then 00:19:04.64\00:19:07.34 the housing of administration. 00:19:07.34\00:19:08.88 So here we are at the end of our road 00:19:08.88\00:19:12.11 and we have containers with some of the material donated. 00:19:12.11\00:19:16.38 And the idea is since we have a wide open space here 00:19:16.38\00:19:20.12 to start building a maintenance shop 00:19:20.12\00:19:22.96 where you can also put equipment storage 00:19:22.96\00:19:25.46 where you can train the young people 00:19:25.46\00:19:27.76 how they can learn about carpentry, 00:19:27.76\00:19:30.60 about welding, about repairing things 00:19:30.60\00:19:33.80 that they get equipped with practical skills 00:19:33.80\00:19:36.44 not only knowledge in school. 00:19:36.44\00:19:38.54 - [Jeff] So you're gonna use the container that we've been 00:19:38.54\00:19:40.28 shipping over somehow for building walls or something. 00:19:40.28\00:19:42.34 - Exactly, it will be an outside wall. 00:19:42.34\00:19:44.45 Then the idea is to have two containers apart 00:19:44.48\00:19:47.12 by about 15 feet and on top we will have a rolling, 00:19:47.12\00:19:52.12 I don't know how you call it, like a tripod 00:19:52.72\00:19:54.72 with a chain hoist. 00:19:54.76\00:19:56.49 - Oh yeah, it's like an I beam steel 00:19:56.49\00:19:58.13 for moving heavy equipment. - Exactly, exactly. 00:19:58.13\00:20:00.10 So you can put a generator on a truck. 00:20:00.10\00:20:02.06 You can get an engine out of a truck if you need 00:20:02.06\00:20:05.17 to replace things. 00:20:05.17\00:20:06.57 So we try to use what we have. 00:20:06.57\00:20:09.10 - All the years that I've been coming here 00:20:09.10\00:20:10.57 it's like we have all these things 00:20:10.57\00:20:12.81 that need to be maintained, but we don't really have a place 00:20:12.81\00:20:14.94 to really take care of any of the equipment, 00:20:14.94\00:20:17.18 so having a shop would be a place to be out of the sun 00:20:17.18\00:20:19.48 because even right now this is blistering hot. 00:20:19.48\00:20:22.22 So to be able to be in the shade some place 00:20:22.22\00:20:24.55 and have a place for the tools and everything 00:20:24.59\00:20:26.72 could be locked up would be really good. 00:20:26.72\00:20:28.66 I was just talking to Don. 00:20:28.66\00:20:30.23 Don is the maintenance man for the whole project here 00:20:30.23\00:20:32.96 and he's been working in that little teeny 00:20:32.99\00:20:35.53 generator building is what it is 00:20:35.53\00:20:37.23 to try to fix things in there. 00:20:37.27\00:20:38.80 He doesn't have the space to do it, 00:20:38.80\00:20:40.00 so this is a really important thing. 00:20:40.04\00:20:42.24 - We estimate that the floor dimension will be like 00:20:42.24\00:20:44.54 80 foot by probably 30 feet. 00:20:44.54\00:20:47.28 - That's a pretty good size. - That's a good size, yes. 00:20:47.28\00:20:49.08 Yes, good size. 00:20:49.08\00:20:50.71 We have a donor in the US who is willing to donate I beams. 00:20:50.75\00:20:54.25 So that's good for some of the posts. 00:20:54.25\00:20:58.85 And we have to use metal. 00:20:58.85\00:21:01.46 The termites are so bad they eat anything 00:21:01.46\00:21:04.09 which is out of wood, so we want to have a metal structure. 00:21:04.09\00:21:07.60 I beam posts and then metal trusses and simple roof 00:21:07.60\00:21:12.57 but it adds up. 00:21:12.77\00:21:14.67 Cement and steel and the labor, 00:21:14.67\00:21:17.54 so probably we're looking at about $25,000-- 00:21:17.54\00:21:21.14 - But really isn't that bad for building a shop that size. 00:21:21.14\00:21:24.25 - But for here it's a big amount. 00:21:25.05\00:21:27.02 - (chuckling) Yeah. 00:21:27.02\00:21:28.08 Yeah, it's a next step though for really being able 00:21:28.08\00:21:30.49 to make this operation work better. 00:21:30.52\00:21:32.25 - [Narrator] Laymen Ministries operates 00:21:34.16\00:21:35.69 Church schools projects in three very remote villages 00:21:35.69\00:21:38.79 as well as one school at the base of the mountain 00:21:38.83\00:21:41.00 where we have our academy. 00:21:41.00\00:21:42.70 To staff and supply the remote village projects 00:21:42.70\00:21:45.43 we're extremely dependent on our boat. 00:21:45.43\00:21:48.10 The only other way to get to these villages 00:21:48.10\00:21:50.21 is by a six hour hike over Mount Calavite! 00:21:50.21\00:21:53.14 - Over the 20 years that we have operated 00:21:57.05\00:22:01.05 as Laymen Ministries Philippines, 00:22:01.05\00:22:03.69 we have had three boats because we have to travel 00:22:03.69\00:22:10.83 to remote native villages and we have to travel 00:22:11.66\00:22:15.90 on the open ocean, 00:22:15.90\00:22:17.10 and the South China Sea is very treacherous. 00:22:17.10\00:22:19.77 Our Laymen Ministries II boat had become very dangerous. 00:22:22.27\00:22:28.51 It had become rotten and at that point 00:22:28.51\00:22:32.31 we decided to build a new boat that would better 00:22:32.31\00:22:35.72 meet our needs because of the size of our operation 00:22:35.72\00:22:40.26 has grown so we're dramatically many times we have 00:22:40.29\00:22:45.29 building supplies and a lot of people 00:22:45.56\00:22:48.83 and we need to be very safe. 00:22:48.83\00:22:51.67 Our typical trip on the ocean to the villages 00:22:51.67\00:22:56.67 could be five to six hours on the ocean. 00:22:56.77\00:23:01.61 Then in July of 2018 when the boat was only six months old, 00:23:01.61\00:23:06.61 Mamburao experienced a major flood. 00:23:08.32\00:23:11.32 Mamburao is the city in which we live 00:23:11.32\00:23:13.72 and the river in which we anchored the boat. 00:23:13.72\00:23:17.43 - The boat is at the harbor in the Mamburao River 00:23:17.43\00:23:20.40 and there are many boats around us. 00:23:20.40\00:23:23.16 That's the shelter for storms. 00:23:23.16\00:23:25.33 You go in the river, you tie your boat up tight 00:23:25.33\00:23:28.57 and you protect that against the typhoons 00:23:28.57\00:23:31.67 and the severe weathers which are happening here. 00:23:31.67\00:23:34.34 The water rose so much that it almost went 00:23:34.34\00:23:38.65 up to the bridge at the back. 00:23:38.65\00:23:40.95 It pulled out to the ocean one of the construction boats 00:23:40.95\00:23:45.52 and with it all the other boats which were nicely tied 00:23:45.52\00:23:49.32 to the piers. 00:23:49.36\00:23:51.63 - 50 predominantly fishing boats, 00:23:52.39\00:23:56.63 ours was the only non-fishing boat, 00:23:56.63\00:23:59.83 that was parked in the river, 00:23:59.83\00:24:02.37 were all washed out into the ocean. 00:24:02.37\00:24:05.37 - The provincial government tells us it was the worst flood 00:24:05.37\00:24:08.38 since 40 years. 00:24:08.38\00:24:10.25 People had to be evacuated whole sections 00:24:10.25\00:24:12.95 of the town were evacuated. 00:24:12.98\00:24:14.82 The main road was underneath of the water. 00:24:14.82\00:24:17.39 It was terrible. 00:24:17.39\00:24:18.49 - Our boat had two anchors on it plus three or four 00:24:19.35\00:24:24.36 ropes tying it to different secure areas 00:24:25.46\00:24:30.43 but when a two-meter flood, two-meter rush of water, 00:24:30.80\00:24:35.80 wall of water, two meters is six feet roughly, 00:24:36.44\00:24:41.14 washed through and boats started breaking their tie, 00:24:42.94\00:24:49.28 then one would be stacked against the other 00:24:50.02\00:24:52.75 and then finally just wash the whole river totally clean. 00:24:52.75\00:24:56.69 Water can be extremely powerful 00:24:56.73\00:24:59.06 and in this case with all of these boats 00:24:59.06\00:25:02.23 stacking up on each other and tumbling, 00:25:02.23\00:25:05.10 they got washed out into the ocean. 00:25:06.50\00:25:09.04 - When our captain informed us about what happened, 00:25:09.07\00:25:11.94 we immediately prayed. 00:25:11.94\00:25:13.34 We did not know the full story. 00:25:13.34\00:25:15.11 He himself was evacuated 00:25:15.11\00:25:17.25 and he didn't know the full picture. 00:25:17.25\00:25:19.05 We went to the coastguard, to the police, 00:25:19.91\00:25:22.08 to the military, to the provincial government. 00:25:22.08\00:25:24.82 We asked everybody we knew for help 00:25:24.82\00:25:27.32 to find our boat and retrieve it. 00:25:27.32\00:25:30.06 - In other areas where there was no flood, 00:25:30.06\00:25:34.56 the fisherman could get on the ocean, 00:25:34.56\00:25:37.73 they stripped the boats including ours. 00:25:39.10\00:25:40.97 When we found our boat it was submerged to within 00:25:40.97\00:25:47.98 maybe a meter of the top of the boat. 00:25:47.98\00:25:52.08 And we were able through a very kind gentleman, 00:25:52.08\00:25:57.09 who own a fishing boat, to hire him to pull 00:25:58.29\00:26:03.06 our boat in near Mamburao. 00:26:03.06\00:26:06.70 We finally got it beached and emptied the water, 00:26:06.70\00:26:10.97 emptied the sand that was in it. 00:26:10.97\00:26:13.54 Our boat had extensive damage. 00:26:13.54\00:26:17.27 Not only broken ribs, broken side walls, 00:26:17.27\00:26:22.28 of course being totally submerged 00:26:23.91\00:26:26.82 the engine had to be totally rebuilt. 00:26:26.82\00:26:30.32 There was also major damage to the shaft 00:26:31.92\00:26:35.99 and the propeller. 00:26:35.99\00:26:37.79 And the total cost of repairing the boat, 00:26:37.79\00:26:45.03 making it sea worthy again was an excess of $12,000. 00:26:45.23\00:26:50.24 We really are appreciative for the donors 00:26:52.01\00:26:56.85 who stepped in and helped us rebuild our boat 00:26:56.85\00:27:01.92 so that we could again service our schools 00:27:02.08\00:27:07.09 in these remote areas. 00:27:08.22\00:27:10.99 So thank you very much for joining hands with us 00:27:10.99\00:27:15.96 and putting our boat back in condition. 00:27:16.77\00:27:20.37 (triumphant music) 00:27:20.37\00:27:23.27 Just this last Sabbath we had eight adults 00:27:29.68\00:27:33.18 baptized in one village by their request. 00:27:35.88\00:27:40.32 This is a long time in coming. 00:27:41.29\00:27:43.83 It's a major, major change in these people's lives 00:27:46.16\00:27:51.13 that they would accept Christianity 00:27:53.37\00:27:56.97 and accept the need and the desire to want 00:27:56.97\00:28:04.68 to serve the creator, God. 00:28:04.68\00:28:07.28 (gentle music) 00:28:07.28\00:28:09.82
