On this program we are once again 00:00:38.07\00:00:40.00 taking you to the country of The Philippines. 00:00:40.07\00:00:45.11 For years Laymen Ministries has used boats as our lifeline, 00:00:45.14\00:00:48.51 to get the needed supplies to people and patients 00:00:48.54\00:00:51.55 to and from the remote villages of Mindoro. 00:00:51.58\00:00:55.92 We have three projects in remote villages, 00:00:55.95\00:00:58.35 Binuangan, Pinagbyanan, and Agbalite. 00:00:58.39\00:01:02.12 Taking a boat from the port in Mamburao 00:01:02.16\00:01:04.23 to the first village Binuangan can take three hours, 00:01:04.26\00:01:07.23 but if you have to walk which is the only other option, 00:01:07.30\00:01:10.93 it can take six to eight hours 00:01:10.97\00:01:12.40 depending on weather and personal stamina. 00:01:12.43\00:01:16.34 Around 17 years ago 00:01:16.37\00:01:17.97 our first boat was the smallest gift 00:01:18.01\00:01:20.18 powered by a five horsepower Briggs 00:01:20.24\00:01:22.11 and Stratton engine. 00:01:22.14\00:01:24.21 Taking people and supplies out in a boat 00:01:24.25\00:01:26.38 like this on the open South China Sea 00:01:26.41\00:01:28.32 was extremely dangerous to say the least. 00:01:28.35\00:01:31.32 So we modified it, 00:01:31.35\00:01:32.69 putting in more wave protection on the front and sides, 00:01:32.72\00:01:35.66 just try to make it safer. 00:01:35.69\00:01:37.89 But since the boat was so small 00:01:37.93\00:01:39.89 we can only carry a handful of people 00:01:39.96\00:01:42.23 and a few supplies. 00:01:42.26\00:01:44.00 We finally had to build the new boat, 00:01:44.03\00:01:46.27 this boat started out as a used fishing boat, 00:01:46.30\00:01:49.04 but after sometime we realized 00:01:49.07\00:01:50.64 we needed to make some other improvements. 00:01:50.67\00:01:53.74 So we raised the captain seat for better visibility 00:01:53.81\00:01:56.51 and upgraded the engine, 00:01:56.54\00:01:58.68 powered by a 4-cylinder Isuzu diesel engine. 00:01:58.71\00:02:01.78 This faithful boat 00:02:01.82\00:02:03.25 over the years halt thousands of pounds of food, 00:02:03.28\00:02:06.52 building supplies and missionaries 00:02:06.55\00:02:08.62 back and forth over the open South China Sea. 00:02:08.66\00:02:12.43 We're standing on the Mamburao River 00:02:12.46\00:02:15.03 and then in front of us here 00:02:15.06\00:02:16.63 is the Laymen Ministries Express II Boat. 00:02:16.67\00:02:20.80 We use this boat 00:02:20.84\00:02:22.64 because it is the only link 00:02:22.67\00:02:25.01 between the headquarters here in Mamburao 00:02:25.04\00:02:28.24 and our remote villages out in the mountain, 00:02:28.28\00:02:31.18 we can by using this boat, 00:02:31.21\00:02:33.68 we can deliver supplies 00:02:33.72\00:02:35.68 and missionaries 00:02:35.72\00:02:38.85 to the villages and we pick up patients. 00:02:38.89\00:02:43.49 And in this case 00:02:43.53\00:02:44.86 we brought back two missionary patients. 00:02:44.89\00:02:48.36 The boat is extremely valuable 00:02:48.40\00:02:52.57 for the work that we are doing here. 00:02:52.60\00:02:55.60 And it has served us well since 2005, 00:02:55.64\00:03:01.51 we purchased it as a used fishing boat 00:03:01.54\00:03:05.61 and remodeled it to use for our purpose. 00:03:05.65\00:03:10.09 However we've patched all we can patch 00:03:10.12\00:03:12.99 and we patch patches. 00:03:13.02\00:03:15.06 So we're now in the process of constructing a new boat 00:03:15.09\00:03:21.46 which should be finished by November of this year. 00:03:21.50\00:03:27.84 The boat as I mentioned was a surplus fishing boat, 00:03:27.87\00:03:32.37 we have a surplus 4-cylinder diesel engine 00:03:32.41\00:03:37.61 that drives it. 00:03:37.65\00:03:39.21 And we're extremely thankful 00:03:39.25\00:03:43.65 for the safe use 00:03:43.69\00:03:45.92 that we have received from this boat 00:03:45.95\00:03:48.02 on the South China Sea, 00:03:48.06\00:03:49.82 which itself is very treacherous, 00:03:49.86\00:03:53.23 especially the route that we have to take 00:03:53.26\00:03:55.56 around the island 00:03:55.60\00:03:58.00 goes in an area called the Cavity Passage. 00:03:58.03\00:04:03.07 The Cavity Passages is wicked. 00:04:03.10\00:04:07.48 Many times we encounter gale force winds 00:04:07.51\00:04:12.38 and three, four or more meter waves. 00:04:12.41\00:04:17.59 Many people don't like to travel there 00:04:17.62\00:04:22.39 but God has protected us for these last 18 years. 00:04:22.42\00:04:26.70 And we have never had an incident 00:04:26.73\00:04:32.37 that was dangerous. 00:04:32.40\00:04:36.87 We're operating 00:04:44.68\00:04:46.01 in a very critical salt water environment 00:04:46.05\00:04:50.35 which is hard on the boat. 00:04:50.39\00:04:53.25 Our boats are all handmade locally. 00:04:53.32\00:04:57.99 And the pounding of the waves 00:04:58.03\00:05:01.13 and the abuse the boat takes 00:05:01.16\00:05:04.73 from the South China Sea wears on it. 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.97 As you can see we have 00:05:08.00\00:05:09.47 some very serious problems here. 00:05:09.50\00:05:14.58 Thank God, these are all above the waterline. 00:05:14.61\00:05:18.55 And we have fiberglass 00:05:18.58\00:05:22.38 the outside of the plywood 00:05:22.42\00:05:24.99 on this boat but it's getting to the point of danger. 00:05:25.02\00:05:30.03 And we're hauling families, 00:05:30.06\00:05:33.03 patients and we do this trip every two weeks. 00:05:33.06\00:05:38.13 So it is not safe anymore 00:05:38.17\00:05:41.74 for us to operate Laymen Ministries Express II. 00:05:41.77\00:05:45.37 And we are extremely grateful that we can build our new boat, 00:05:45.41\00:05:51.35 this one was a surplus. 00:05:51.38\00:05:53.05 But we're building a new boat, 00:05:53.08\00:05:55.75 bigger and stronger than the existing boat 00:05:55.78\00:06:00.12 because our number of co-workers, 00:06:00.19\00:06:03.09 teachers in the village continues to expand. 00:06:03.12\00:06:06.36 So we're hauling more things back and forth, 00:06:06.39\00:06:11.90 both people and supplies. 00:06:11.93\00:06:14.27 We are now at the home of Sawlie, 00:06:19.31\00:06:21.64 the master boat builder 00:06:21.68\00:06:23.01 who's been building fishing boats here 00:06:23.04\00:06:24.98 in Occidental Mindoro for the last 30 years. 00:06:25.01\00:06:28.82 And we just stopped here at the house 00:06:28.85\00:06:30.59 before we go to the building site. 00:06:30.62\00:06:33.36 We have workers who are applying epoxy. 00:06:33.39\00:06:38.66 So the plywood 00:06:38.69\00:06:41.70 is being prepared here, 00:06:41.73\00:06:46.63 in preparation for applying to the boat. 00:06:46.70\00:06:50.77 Soon as the ribbing is finished, 00:06:50.81\00:06:52.24 we'll find out as soon as we get there. 00:06:52.27\00:06:55.38 We are on our way now 00:06:55.41\00:06:56.75 to the actual boat construction site 00:06:56.81\00:07:00.78 and with me is our boat captain and Mario Hernandez 00:07:00.85\00:07:06.09 who's been with us now 17 years. 00:07:06.12\00:07:10.56 And Mario is also overseeing 00:07:10.59\00:07:14.20 the construction of our new boat. 00:07:14.23\00:07:17.60 Okay... 00:07:21.17\00:07:22.50 Yeah. 00:07:26.81\00:07:28.44 Our new boat will be 30, 00:07:28.48\00:07:31.28 will be 11 meters long, 00:07:31.31\00:07:34.95 plus the extension... 00:07:34.98\00:07:39.52 Oh goodness, I forgot now 00:07:39.55\00:07:40.96 what the extensions are called in English. 00:07:40.99\00:07:42.69 In Tagalog. 00:07:42.72\00:07:44.06 Yeah, in Tagalog..., 00:07:44.13\00:07:46.63 but in English it's the stern and the bow, right? 00:07:46.70\00:07:51.90 So this is going to give us quite a bit more capacity. 00:07:51.93\00:07:57.37 Sometimes now when we go to the village 00:07:57.41\00:07:59.57 to deliver the teachers at the beginning of the year 00:07:59.61\00:08:02.41 or pick them up, 00:08:02.44\00:08:04.28 we have to make two trips. 00:08:04.31\00:08:06.01 With this we should be able to make it 00:08:06.05\00:08:07.65 all in one trip 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.02 as well as hauling supplies for, 00:08:09.05\00:08:11.79 and it appears that ribbing 00:08:11.82\00:08:16.22 is approaching a completion. 00:08:16.26\00:08:19.86 So we should be putting on the siding very soon. 00:08:19.89\00:08:24.30 The bottom of our boat is 40 inches wide, 00:08:24.33\00:08:29.17 it's one tree, 00:08:29.20\00:08:31.17 that was one hardwood tree that was dug out 00:08:31.21\00:08:36.31 and it forms the bottom of the boat foundation, 00:08:36.34\00:08:41.68 and then on the bottom of that 00:08:41.72\00:08:44.09 we have a 3/5 inch, 00:08:44.12\00:08:49.59 4/5 inch... 00:08:49.62\00:08:51.16 Coral protection in the event 00:08:55.53\00:08:59.00 we should ever run into coral, 00:08:59.03\00:09:02.24 it will hit on the, 00:09:02.27\00:09:06.01 the wooden 4/5 inch that runs the entire 33 feet. 00:09:06.04\00:09:11.81 Very important we learned from our old boat. 00:09:11.85\00:09:15.25 It had a very deep V bowl. 00:09:15.28\00:09:21.09 So that the boat sit deeper in the water. 00:09:21.12\00:09:25.23 This boat on purpose 00:09:25.26\00:09:27.03 we have a very wide base at the bottom. 00:09:27.13\00:09:31.03 So that the boat will sit up higher, 00:09:31.07\00:09:33.94 especially when we load it down 00:09:33.97\00:09:35.90 with building materials and people in it, 00:09:35.94\00:09:40.18 but what's very important for people to understand 00:09:40.21\00:09:43.48 is everything here started as a tree. 00:09:43.55\00:09:48.15 All of the lumber you see here started as a tree taken 00:09:48.18\00:09:52.02 out of the forest, 00:09:52.05\00:09:53.39 and cut to whatever size is needed, 00:09:53.46\00:09:58.53 and all of the work is handwork. 00:09:58.56\00:10:01.06 We can't go to a store here 00:10:01.10\00:10:03.73 and say I want this size lumber, 00:10:03.77\00:10:07.00 it doesn't exist. 00:10:07.04\00:10:08.37 So we set the engine in the boat 00:10:08.40\00:10:11.27 before we started the ribbing 00:10:11.31\00:10:13.64 because it's so heavy and bulky, 00:10:13.68\00:10:18.38 it's dangerous to move it in and out. 00:10:18.41\00:10:22.18 We are very thankful that we have had donations come in 00:10:22.22\00:10:27.32 for the construction of the boat 00:10:27.36\00:10:29.12 and we have very faithful supporters 00:10:29.16\00:10:33.26 who understand the work we're doing here, 00:10:33.29\00:10:35.63 the necessity of having a boat, 00:10:35.66\00:10:38.33 so we genuinely appreciate people 00:10:38.37\00:10:41.10 praying about and if God leads them 00:10:41.14\00:10:44.07 to help us complete the construction. 00:10:44.14\00:10:48.14 And donations did come in, 00:10:54.05\00:10:56.02 and the boat construction moved forward. 00:10:56.05\00:10:58.89 Soon the workers had the sides on 00:10:58.92\00:11:00.96 and started the finishing touches. 00:11:00.99\00:11:04.36 The New Lifeline Laymen Ministries Express 00:11:04.39\00:11:07.50 would be ready to launch. 00:11:07.60\00:11:09.26 It has ample seating 00:11:09.30\00:11:10.73 and a large storage area for cargo. 00:11:10.77\00:11:13.70 The day of the launch took a large front end loader 00:11:13.74\00:11:16.10 to move the boat to the water. 00:11:16.14\00:11:18.24 Soon the boat was home free and running smoothly. 00:11:18.27\00:11:21.58 We want to thank all of you who made this miracle possible. 00:11:21.61\00:11:25.11 A new era for Laymen Ministries has begun. 00:11:25.15\00:11:29.48 This lifeline involves a lot more work to keep 00:11:29.52\00:11:32.32 all the food orders and supplies box labeled 00:11:32.35\00:11:35.06 and packed properly, 00:11:35.09\00:11:36.46 so they can be shipped to the villages. 00:11:36.49\00:11:39.03 All the supplies have to be put in reverse order. 00:11:39.06\00:11:41.80 So when they get unloaded at the boat 00:11:41.83\00:11:43.70 they're in the right order, 00:11:43.73\00:11:45.33 this way the right supplies for the right villages 00:11:45.37\00:11:47.70 is in its proper sequencing for each village. 00:11:47.74\00:11:51.34 Otherwise the supplies 00:11:51.37\00:11:52.71 for one village will be on top of the supplies 00:11:52.74\00:11:54.64 for another village. 00:11:54.68\00:11:56.01 Confused, well it can be 00:11:56.04\00:11:58.05 without a good systematic method. 00:11:58.08\00:12:01.08 As you can see there's a lot of work 00:12:01.12\00:12:02.75 to keep the missionary stocked with their needed supplies. 00:12:02.78\00:12:06.86 As I looked at this boat, 00:12:06.89\00:12:08.32 I was reminded how bad its condition is. 00:12:08.36\00:12:11.29 This is going to be the second to the last trip 00:12:11.33\00:12:13.90 before this boat would be retired. 00:12:13.93\00:12:16.26 I just hope it makes it to the villages 00:12:16.30\00:12:18.00 and back with no incidents. 00:12:18.03\00:12:20.50 The next trick is getting this boat 00:12:20.54\00:12:22.67 out of this crowded harbor. 00:12:22.70\00:12:24.84 There's a lot of boats packed in here 00:12:24.87\00:12:26.37 with their anchor rope sprawling all over the place 00:12:26.41\00:12:29.14 and the last thing you want to have happen 00:12:29.18\00:12:30.91 is to have a rope 00:12:30.95\00:12:32.28 get tangled up in your propeller. 00:12:32.31\00:12:34.42 The boat crew often have to jump into the water 00:12:34.45\00:12:36.95 to ensure the boat does not get tangled up 00:12:36.99\00:12:38.95 with the other boats. 00:12:38.99\00:12:40.42 The fishermen in these ports are often rough characters, 00:12:40.46\00:12:43.93 often sporting hangover 00:12:43.99\00:12:45.49 so you want to prevent any tempers from flaring. 00:12:45.53\00:12:49.46 Soon we are off headed for the South China Sea. 00:12:49.50\00:12:53.00 Even though this was typhoon season, 00:12:53.03\00:12:55.47 we were blessed with a relatively calm day. 00:12:55.50\00:13:00.18 It's a three to four hour boat trip 00:13:00.21\00:13:02.04 depending on weather from the port of Mamburao 00:13:02.08\00:13:04.61 crossing Paluan Bay to the first village Binuangan. 00:13:04.65\00:13:10.29 We were again blessed 00:13:10.32\00:13:11.65 because the water at the beach 00:13:11.69\00:13:13.02 was relatively calm. 00:13:13.05\00:13:14.59 Sometimes the waves can be 12 feet high, 00:13:14.62\00:13:17.16 pounding on the shore, 00:13:17.23\00:13:18.63 literally make unloading the boat impossible. 00:13:18.66\00:13:23.16 After we anchored the boat, 00:13:23.20\00:13:24.63 we started the unloading process. 00:13:24.67\00:13:29.50 In this village we have an active school 00:13:29.54\00:13:31.54 for the Iraya tribe. 00:13:31.57\00:13:33.11 We have K through seventh grades 00:13:33.14\00:13:35.04 in this village. 00:13:35.08\00:13:36.41 The graduating students from the seventh grade 00:13:36.44\00:13:38.51 then moved to our boarding academy in Mumburao. 00:13:38.55\00:13:42.05 Many of the buildings here are older. 00:13:42.08\00:13:44.25 Staff housing and classrooms are right next to each other. 00:13:44.29\00:13:47.46 On the top of the hill behind these buildings 00:13:47.52\00:13:49.66 we have two more classrooms. 00:13:49.69\00:13:51.63 The students start their day with some exercises 00:13:51.66\00:13:54.56 and then group worship. 00:13:54.56\00:13:56.80 Following the melody of God 00:13:56.83\00:14:00.64 Following the melody of God 00:14:00.67\00:14:06.54 The students memorize Bible text 00:14:06.57\00:14:08.78 and answer Bible questions. 00:14:08.81\00:14:10.55 After worship all the students are required 00:14:16.25\00:14:18.25 to brush their teeth. 00:14:18.29\00:14:19.65 They're all encouraged to have good hygiene. 00:14:19.69\00:14:21.99 We have teachers that come from many places 00:14:26.43\00:14:28.13 around the Philippines and other countries as well. 00:14:28.16\00:14:31.03 Sing! 00:14:47.92\00:14:49.25 Okay, now. 00:14:58.29\00:14:59.63 I originally was born in Haiti and I migrated, if you will, 00:14:59.66\00:15:04.67 to America 1n 1974. 00:15:04.70\00:15:07.54 And so that's where I grew up. 00:15:07.57\00:15:09.54 And that's where I live currently, 00:15:09.57\00:15:13.81 but, actually now I live here in the Philippines 00:15:13.88\00:15:17.25 being part of one of the team members of LMP. 00:15:17.28\00:15:20.95 Okay, now I leave. 00:15:20.98\00:15:22.52 Leaf? 00:15:26.09\00:15:27.46 How did I come about with Laymen Ministries? 00:15:27.49\00:15:30.23 Seems like its a full circle. 00:15:30.26\00:15:32.56 In 2006-2007, in there, 00:15:32.59\00:15:37.17 I applied with Laymen Ministries 00:15:37.23\00:15:39.37 and for some reason at the time I was searching 00:15:39.40\00:15:43.24 because I really desired to be a missionary 00:15:43.27\00:15:45.57 but at the time I wasn't too sure what to do. 00:15:45.61\00:15:48.74 And then I also applied at a place called Wild Wood, 00:15:48.78\00:15:53.01 that's for medical training. 00:15:53.05\00:15:55.25 So, I decided to go there 00:15:55.28\00:15:58.12 because I figured 00:15:58.15\00:16:00.19 if I have some kind of medical background, 00:16:00.22\00:16:02.06 I would be better used in a mission field. 00:16:02.09\00:16:04.36 So I went on to do that. 00:16:04.39\00:16:05.99 Then shortly after Wild Wood, I went to my first mission, 00:16:06.03\00:16:11.63 my first long term mission trip in Thailand and then there, 00:16:11.67\00:16:15.97 right before coming to... 00:16:16.00\00:16:18.04 going to America I met a Filipino pastor 00:16:18.07\00:16:21.54 and he invited me to come to the Philippines. 00:16:21.58\00:16:24.91 And so I came, I was doing my own thing 00:16:24.95\00:16:27.52 as a medical missionary visiting many people 00:16:27.55\00:16:30.69 doing blood pressure and whatnot, 00:16:30.72\00:16:32.69 and all of a sudden, it's like, 00:16:32.72\00:16:34.59 I was not satisfied enough 00:16:34.62\00:16:36.29 and I felt very lonely to tell you the truth, 00:16:36.32\00:16:39.33 because I am going solo. 00:16:39.36\00:16:41.03 So now right before... 00:16:41.06\00:16:44.03 I'm trying to, not really giving up, 00:16:44.07\00:16:46.70 but a friend of mine, 00:16:46.74\00:16:48.64 I asked for a phone number to some friends 00:16:48.67\00:16:50.77 I wanted to just get some American connection, 00:16:50.81\00:16:54.48 or some English connection, 00:16:54.51\00:16:56.14 she gave me the friends email address, 00:16:56.18\00:16:59.55 and also the email address of Jim and Moni Webb. 00:16:59.58\00:17:06.02 And basically I'm like "Jim and Moni Webb"? 00:17:06.05\00:17:08.12 Who are they? 00:17:08.16\00:17:09.49 And they're with Laymen Ministries. 00:17:09.52\00:17:11.03 I said, "Laymen Ministries!" 00:17:11.06\00:17:12.79 And that brought back 2006-2007, 00:17:12.83\00:17:15.76 so I sent him an email and then he wrote, 00:17:15.80\00:17:19.27 I sent him an email just to say "Hi!" 00:17:19.30\00:17:21.60 and left him my email address, and if he would like, 00:17:21.64\00:17:24.97 if he had time to please contact me 00:17:25.01\00:17:28.04 because I just wanted some American connection. 00:17:28.08\00:17:30.55 And he called in, 00:17:30.58\00:17:32.15 would you know that God had great plans 00:17:32.18\00:17:34.45 and after many, several conversation here I am, 00:17:34.48\00:17:40.66 5 months later back in, Laymen Ministries, 00:17:40.69\00:17:45.39 so I am very excited to be here. 00:17:45.43\00:17:48.20 Mom, one, two, three. 00:17:48.23\00:17:51.27 Mom. Hmm. 00:17:51.30\00:17:53.13 Okay, the next word, 00:17:53.17\00:17:55.30 the next letter is the letter N, 00:17:55.34\00:17:59.44 and what sound does the N make? 00:17:59.47\00:18:02.94 Mae Celestre works with the older students. 00:18:02.98\00:18:05.45 It's amazing to see these older students 00:18:05.48\00:18:07.55 who have come from an illiterate background 00:18:07.58\00:18:09.58 advancing in their comprehension. 00:18:09.62\00:18:13.32 Mae and her husband Boying 00:18:13.39\00:18:15.06 have been with our ministry for many years. 00:18:15.09\00:18:17.39 It's time to say goodbye 00:18:23.16\00:18:24.50 to the missionaries at Binuangan, 00:18:24.53\00:18:26.20 pull up anchor and head to the next village. 00:18:26.23\00:18:28.64 It takes about one hour in good weather 00:18:38.45\00:18:40.75 to go from Binuangan to the village of Pinagbyanan. 00:18:40.82\00:18:44.09 Edith and Lowell Ramos 00:18:47.36\00:18:48.82 are village leaders in Pinagbyanan. 00:18:48.86\00:18:51.36 This village has a small protected harbor. 00:18:51.39\00:18:54.63 Again the same thing is repeated, 00:18:54.66\00:18:56.67 the supplies for the missionaries 00:18:56.73\00:18:58.07 are unloaded. 00:18:58.10\00:18:59.43 Okay, this is the village of Pinagbyanan. 00:19:03.94\00:19:06.07 This was the second village Laymen Ministries entered 00:19:06.11\00:19:08.44 after we started to work here in the Philippines. 00:19:08.48\00:19:10.88 We came here about 17 years ago to this location, 00:19:10.91\00:19:13.85 and somebody attempted to start 00:19:13.88\00:19:15.82 trying to build a school over here in this area, 00:19:15.85\00:19:18.25 and there was two like two partial walls erected 00:19:18.29\00:19:20.79 when we came and they looked like they had been there 00:19:20.82\00:19:22.59 for quite a while. 00:19:22.62\00:19:24.49 Nothing was really happening. 00:19:24.53\00:19:25.86 And I remember Jim and Moni Webb and I came here 00:19:25.89\00:19:28.56 and we looked over the village, 00:19:28.60\00:19:30.07 and looked over the school property 00:19:30.10\00:19:31.70 and thought about starting a project here. 00:19:31.73\00:19:34.97 There was a lot of challenges 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.34 with getting this particular village up and running, 00:19:36.37\00:19:38.34 and by God's grace 00:19:38.37\00:19:39.94 that building that was started there 00:19:39.97\00:19:42.04 turned into one of our first mission houses 00:19:42.08\00:19:44.25 and classrooms here. 00:19:44.28\00:19:45.61 And since then we've expanded into a really beautiful campus. 00:19:45.65\00:19:48.58 The land is deeded to Laymen Ministries, 00:19:48.62\00:19:52.39 Philippines for the purpose of working with the Katatubo. 00:19:52.42\00:19:55.32 So the Katutubo and Laymen Ministries 00:19:55.36\00:19:58.33 has kind like joint agreement on this land as a lease. 00:19:58.36\00:20:01.23 And a lot of things have happened 00:20:01.26\00:20:04.23 in the last 17 years. 00:20:04.27\00:20:06.07 The village used to be a small simple village. 00:20:06.10\00:20:09.57 We had challenges with the school at first 00:20:09.60\00:20:11.71 because a lot of the students 00:20:11.74\00:20:13.38 like in Agbalite were older students 00:20:13.44\00:20:16.11 that came there and so they only like made it 00:20:16.14\00:20:18.21 through a few years, 00:20:18.25\00:20:19.58 but then the village started to really grow 00:20:19.61\00:20:21.95 and there was not only Katutubo that moved into the village 00:20:21.98\00:20:25.85 but some Visayan and Tagalog Filipinos 00:20:25.89\00:20:28.56 and some of those people brought in alcohol, tobacco, 00:20:28.59\00:20:32.79 movies and some very less than desirable type of movies. 00:20:32.83\00:20:37.50 And so there was a lot of like worldly influences 00:20:37.53\00:20:41.17 started coming into the village. 00:20:41.20\00:20:42.64 The government built a public school 00:20:42.67\00:20:44.57 right close to our school over here. 00:20:44.61\00:20:46.71 The teacher shows up about half of the time 00:20:46.74\00:20:49.31 but the parents don't really understand 00:20:49.34\00:20:51.68 the value of education, 00:20:51.71\00:20:53.05 so whether going to a school like ours 00:20:53.08\00:20:55.08 which has a really high standard, 00:20:55.12\00:20:56.48 we expect a good attendance versus just going over there, 00:20:56.52\00:21:00.86 you get pass, the teacher shows up half the time. 00:21:00.89\00:21:03.76 Some of the parents have sent their students 00:21:03.83\00:21:05.59 over to the public school. 00:21:05.63\00:21:07.50 And what's happened is some of them 00:21:07.50\00:21:09.26 actually come back now and are going to school 00:21:09.30\00:21:11.33 because they said, you know, 00:21:11.37\00:21:12.70 the teachers here really love us 00:21:12.73\00:21:14.10 and this school is more serious the one that we're operating. 00:21:14.14\00:21:19.91 All the villages have a flag raising ceremony every morning. 00:21:19.94\00:21:23.21 The teachers do a lot of one-on-one 00:21:33.42\00:21:35.26 with the younger students. 00:21:35.29\00:21:36.62 Edith being a college level teacher 00:21:36.69\00:21:39.19 knows the importance of the groundwork 00:21:39.23\00:21:41.03 that needs to be done with these younger students 00:21:41.06\00:21:43.40 to get them started in English, 00:21:43.43\00:21:45.43 her husband Lowell was testing some of the older students 00:21:45.47\00:21:48.47 while we were there. 00:21:48.50\00:21:49.84 This campus has been built and rebuilt over the years. 00:21:55.41\00:21:59.48 These two room schoolhouse was constructed many years ago 00:21:59.51\00:22:02.45 and was built to withstand typhoons. 00:22:02.48\00:22:05.12 Kimie teaches the class on one side, 00:22:11.06\00:22:13.29 while Johan teaches on the other side. 00:22:13.33\00:22:16.00 Every year we have student missionaries 00:22:16.03\00:22:18.03 that come to us from around the world. 00:22:18.07\00:22:20.04 My name is Johan Lachenal and I'm from France. 00:22:34.52\00:22:40.26 I'm 18 years old. 00:22:40.32\00:22:43.06 So at first I did not really know 00:22:43.09\00:22:45.19 what to expect when I came here 00:22:45.23\00:22:47.76 because I heard many different things, 00:22:47.83\00:22:51.87 but I did not really know what to expect, that, 00:22:51.90\00:22:58.07 I he knew that I would be in the remote place, 00:22:58.11\00:23:02.78 so, I was not really surprised. 00:23:02.81\00:23:08.35 So I think many people worried me so I was, 00:23:08.38\00:23:14.92 I would say ready for that. 00:23:14.96\00:23:17.36 It was still a culture shock 00:23:17.43\00:23:20.00 because it's very different from my place. 00:23:20.03\00:23:22.26 At the end of the day 00:23:26.27\00:23:27.60 there's nothing like a home cooked meal, 00:23:27.64\00:23:29.24 prepared over hot coals in your dirty kitchen. 00:23:29.27\00:23:32.84 Don't let the term dirty kitchen scare you. 00:23:32.87\00:23:34.94 It's what the Filipinos call an outdoor kitchen. 00:23:34.98\00:23:37.95 The next morning we made our way to Agbalite, 00:23:41.78\00:23:44.32 our most remote village. 00:23:44.35\00:23:46.05 Again we were blessed with calm water. 00:23:50.23\00:23:52.53 This beach is exposed to the open sea 00:23:52.56\00:23:54.73 and has a very steep and rocky shoreline. 00:23:54.73\00:23:57.33 The children at the school 00:24:01.30\00:24:02.64 were just starting their flag raising ceremonies 00:24:02.67\00:24:04.94 when we arrived. 00:24:04.97\00:24:06.37 Spirituality is a very important part of our schools. 00:24:10.58\00:24:14.22 In the villages 00:24:14.25\00:24:15.58 there are so many heartbreaking situations, 00:24:15.62\00:24:17.82 birth defects, children getting hurt, 00:24:17.85\00:24:20.56 our missionaries or doctors, 00:24:20.59\00:24:22.29 counselors encourage us as well as teachers. 00:24:22.32\00:24:25.69 So typical the child has a deep cut 00:24:30.37\00:24:33.13 but he does not cry, 00:24:33.17\00:24:34.60 he does not show much emotion 00:24:34.64\00:24:36.50 and stays calm while being treated. 00:24:36.54\00:24:41.94 The children are taught to lead out 00:24:41.98\00:24:43.71 like this girl praying before class. 00:24:43.75\00:24:47.18 This girl was born with spina bifida, 00:24:47.22\00:24:49.88 Laymen Ministries paid to have her treated 00:24:49.92\00:24:51.89 so today she can function normally. 00:24:51.92\00:24:55.82 You should be, you should be loud 00:24:55.86\00:24:57.96 and then you have the same action 00:24:57.99\00:25:00.13 that is five points. 00:25:00.16\00:25:01.46 Isabelle is another teacher 00:25:10.61\00:25:11.94 who has been with our ministry for several years 00:25:11.97\00:25:13.81 and is the village project leader. 00:25:13.88\00:25:16.75 Back in 2004 and 2005 my wife Christy, 00:25:16.78\00:25:20.82 and my youngest daughter Naselle worked in this village 00:25:20.85\00:25:23.92 for six months as missionary teachers. 00:25:23.99\00:25:26.52 Christy was now wanting to find some of her old students, 00:25:32.06\00:25:34.76 right now a girl named Naomi. 00:25:34.83\00:25:36.56 I'm looking for Naomi's house. 00:25:36.63\00:25:38.97 Some of these students dropped school years ago, 00:25:39.00\00:25:41.40 reverted to their parents' old lifestyle 00:25:41.44\00:25:43.87 but they still could speak a little English 00:25:43.91\00:25:45.71 which they learned when they were just kids. 00:25:45.74\00:25:48.21 Going into this village will give you an idea 00:25:48.24\00:25:50.21 how the Iraya tribe lives. 00:25:50.25\00:25:52.05 This lady was indeed Naomi, some 12 years earlier 00:26:04.66\00:26:08.36 she was one of my wife's students, 00:26:08.40\00:26:10.57 her short time of education had made some changes, 00:26:10.60\00:26:13.87 she and her children were clean. 00:26:13.94\00:26:15.87 But unless one embraces a God given education, 00:26:15.90\00:26:19.27 the cycle of poverty and ignorance will remain. 00:26:19.31\00:26:22.38 Christy had one more mission to find a girl named Marie 00:26:36.19\00:26:40.13 who is also a former student of hers. 00:26:40.20\00:26:42.30 Along the way we met 00:26:48.47\00:26:49.80 some of the parents of our students. 00:26:49.84\00:26:52.17 Many of these young adults were in
