Lot of times people have this idea 00:00:10.74\00:00:12.11 that international travel is really glamorous. 00:00:12.14\00:00:14.48 I've been doing this for 25 years now. 00:00:14.51\00:00:16.48 Sixteen to seventeen of those years 00:00:16.51\00:00:17.91 making TV programs just like this one 00:00:17.95\00:00:20.32 where I can tell you getting to the places 00:00:20.35\00:00:22.38 is not as glamorous as being there. 00:00:22.42\00:00:24.02 But sometimes you have situation 00:00:24.05\00:00:26.22 where you are stuck in long lines, 00:00:26.25\00:00:27.66 get misinformation or in this situation 00:00:27.69\00:00:29.92 we have all this luggage for our project in Vanuatu. 00:00:29.96\00:00:32.86 And we're told we have to exit the security area 00:00:32.89\00:00:35.63 and stay 18 hours outside before you can check back 00:00:35.66\00:00:38.50 in to get our flight to fly to Vanuatu. 00:00:38.53\00:00:40.24 But the good news is we are headed to Vanuatu 00:00:40.27\00:00:43.07 to check on our project there so come along with us. 00:00:43.10\00:00:50.11 Somewhere across the water 00:00:50.15\00:00:53.65 There are villages and cities 00:00:53.68\00:00:57.72 They're bustling with people 00:00:57.75\00:01:01.02 from the many walks of life 00:01:01.06\00:01:04.93 They never heard of Jesus 00:01:04.96\00:01:08.33 'Cause no one's ever told them 00:01:08.36\00:01:11.73 But they've seen the world's hunger 00:01:11.77\00:01:15.64 Its poverty and strife 00:01:15.67\00:01:18.54 We've got to go into the nation 00:01:18.57\00:01:22.61 With the good news of salvation 00:01:22.64\00:01:26.01 We've got to go and tell the world 00:01:26.05\00:01:30.05 And share the gospel song 00:01:30.09\00:01:33.59 As everyone that's out there 00:01:33.62\00:01:36.93 Is a soul that Jesus died for 00:01:36.96\00:01:40.40 We've got to go and tell the world 00:01:40.43\00:01:44.40 The Lord is soon to come 00:01:44.43\00:01:49.84 Vanuatu is a chain of islands located in the South Pacific. 00:01:52.67\00:01:57.75 The year 2015 marks the ten year anniversary 00:01:57.78\00:02:00.75 of Dr. Trent Boult and his family 00:02:00.78\00:02:02.75 coming to the island of Gaua 00:02:02.78\00:02:04.15 to establish a medical missionary work 00:02:04.19\00:02:06.22 with Laymen Ministries. 00:02:06.25\00:02:08.69 In March 2015, the South Pacific 00:02:08.72\00:02:11.66 was struck by one of the largest cyclones 00:02:11.69\00:02:13.40 in history Cyclone Pam. 00:02:13.43\00:02:16.23 It was regarded as one the worst natural disasters 00:02:16.26\00:02:18.67 in the history of Vanuatu. 00:02:18.70\00:02:20.87 Eleven people lost their lives and many were injured. 00:02:20.90\00:02:24.34 The cyclone built momentum north of the country for days 00:02:24.37\00:02:27.21 before making its way straight for Gaua. 00:02:27.24\00:02:29.88 Miraculously, the storm then shifted 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.28 eastwards sparing Gaua and our project. 00:02:32.31\00:02:35.12 But unfortunately Cyclone Pam been shifted west again 00:02:35.15\00:02:38.92 with winds peaking at 165 miles an hour 00:02:38.95\00:02:42.29 bringing devastation to Port Vila, 00:02:42.32\00:02:44.49 the capital of Vanuatu. 00:02:44.53\00:02:47.46 It was estimated that 90% of the buildings 00:02:47.50\00:02:49.56 in Vanuatu were somehow impacted by the storm 00:02:49.60\00:02:52.43 and 60% of the country's communication was cut off. 00:02:52.47\00:03:00.24 Where we're standing right now 00:03:07.32\00:03:08.88 is called the water front in Port Vila, 00:03:08.92\00:03:12.22 which is capital of Vanuatu. 00:03:12.25\00:03:16.52 This is usually a very shelter little spot 00:03:16.56\00:03:18.83 in the capital here and it's a place 00:03:18.86\00:03:22.96 where lot of yachts come to 'cause it's very protected. 00:03:23.00\00:03:26.10 But during the big cyclone hit Vanuatu, Cyclone Pam 00:03:26.13\00:03:31.07 this became a very dangerous place to be here 00:03:31.11\00:03:33.68 where yachts that were thrown up on here. 00:03:33.71\00:03:35.44 Pieces of yachts still remain here. 00:03:35.48\00:03:38.65 It was completely pounded by the cyclone but this was-- 00:03:38.68\00:03:42.25 They say the worst cyclone has ever hit the Pacific, 00:03:42.28\00:03:45.22 the whole of the South Pacific 00:03:45.25\00:03:46.59 and it caused widespread damaged all over Vanuatu. 00:03:46.62\00:03:51.96 Yeah, it's just amazing right here 00:03:51.99\00:03:53.40 that was like a flee market 00:03:53.43\00:03:55.60 where a lot of women had little stalls 00:03:55.63\00:04:01.37 where they were selling material 00:04:01.40\00:04:04.17 and basket some things like that. 00:04:04.21\00:04:07.54 It's disappeared, everything is gone. 00:04:07.58\00:04:09.64 And in its place is a whole lot of rubble 00:04:09.68\00:04:12.01 which was thrown up here, bits of branches and stuff 00:04:12.05\00:04:16.02 and the remains of those buildings, 00:04:16.05\00:04:17.85 those stalls that they were selling materials and so. 00:04:17.89\00:04:21.22 Yeah, it's quite a sight when we came here 00:04:21.26\00:04:23.46 it was worsen as they've tied this up 00:04:23.49\00:04:26.06 but it's still looking pretty bad. 00:04:26.09\00:04:31.57 Yeah, we see a lot of yachts coming into Vanuatu 00:04:31.60\00:04:34.10 from all over the world. 00:04:34.14\00:04:35.47 Here's one that have got through thrown up 00:04:35.50\00:04:36.91 on the waterfront here. 00:04:36.94\00:04:39.31 And apparently this guy survived, 00:04:39.34\00:04:41.31 the guy that was on this yacht survived 00:04:41.34\00:04:42.81 that there was another yacht over there that got thrown up, 00:04:42.84\00:04:45.05 he wasn't so lucky. 00:04:45.08\00:04:46.48 Apparently, he tried to jump out 00:04:46.51\00:04:48.45 when the water was really rough and he drowned. 00:04:48.48\00:04:52.49 This morning we're heading now to try to beat a cyclone 00:05:01.93\00:05:04.40 that's coming in second one in three weeks. 00:05:04.43\00:05:07.30 We're gonna load up the plane and try to beat the storm, 00:05:07.34\00:05:09.24 fly to Gaua so we can do the repairs up there. 00:05:09.27\00:05:15.71 Mark, I have a question for you. 00:05:42.10\00:05:44.31 You know, that place that you lived in 00:05:44.34\00:05:45.81 when you first came here long time ago. 00:05:45.84\00:05:47.31 Uh-huh. What was it called? 00:05:47.34\00:05:48.91 Kiralu. 00:05:48.94\00:05:50.28 How long it's been since you've been there? 00:05:50.31\00:05:51.85 Long time about three years. 00:05:51.88\00:05:53.21 I was thinking it'd be kind of cool 00:05:53.25\00:05:54.58 for to kind of go down there. 00:05:54.62\00:05:55.95 Is it too far to go to? 00:05:55.98\00:05:57.59 No, we can go there. 00:05:57.62\00:05:58.95 All right. 00:05:58.99\00:06:00.39 We can go on the corner, I think. 00:06:00.42\00:06:01.76 When last time you were there what was it like? 00:06:01.79\00:06:04.23 It looked pretty overgrown 00:06:04.26\00:06:05.59 but I only passed it on the road, 00:06:05.63\00:06:06.96 I didn't go and see it. 00:06:07.00\00:06:08.30 It'd be kind of cool to go check it out. 00:06:08.33\00:06:09.66 Yeah, let's do that. 00:06:09.70\00:06:11.03 You want to grab a couple of bush knives and head up? 00:06:11.07\00:06:12.40 Let's go. Okay. 00:06:12.43\00:06:13.87 That place that we're headed is called Kiralu 00:06:30.69\00:06:32.92 named after a small river that runs through the area. 00:06:32.95\00:06:35.92 It was going to be interesting 00:06:35.96\00:06:37.29 to see the old bungalows that we used some 10 years ago 00:06:37.33\00:06:40.03 when we first started the project. 00:06:40.06\00:06:43.93 So how many years has it been since you've been here? 00:07:06.29\00:07:08.89 Oh, it's about three years I think 00:07:08.92\00:07:10.96 and that is looking very overgrown. 00:07:10.99\00:07:14.46 When we came in here before it seem like 00:07:14.46\00:07:16.36 there was a gate some place. 00:07:16.40\00:07:17.73 There was a gate. Oh, that gate right there. 00:07:17.77\00:07:19.20 Yeah, we came up here. 00:07:19.23\00:07:20.70 All right, and so the bungalow that's the kind of-- 00:07:20.74\00:07:22.77 It's up on the top there. 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.11 Let's go, let's go and see it. 00:07:25.14\00:07:26.47 It looks totally different. 00:07:26.51\00:07:27.84 Get that bush knife out. 00:07:27.88\00:07:30.61 Let's go and see it. 00:07:30.65\00:07:34.65 Believe it or not it is in here somewhere. 00:07:34.68\00:07:39.42 Okay, this must be the house. 00:07:39.45\00:07:41.36 Man, it's so overgrown, wow. 00:07:41.39\00:07:45.33 Well, this is the kitchen area. 00:08:04.48\00:08:06.75 Is this used to be a kitchen? 00:08:06.78\00:08:08.92 Yeah, this is the only part 00:08:08.95\00:08:10.29 that's remaining, all has collapsed. 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.15 Man... 00:08:13.19\00:08:14.52 I remember when we used to have-- 00:08:14.56\00:08:15.89 We had a table right here. 00:08:15.92\00:08:17.26 Yeah. 00:08:17.29\00:08:18.63 And we shot that one segment on the mall, 00:08:18.66\00:08:20.00 was used up against the bamboo thing right here. 00:08:20.03\00:08:21.50 We agree this is-- 00:08:21.53\00:08:23.40 I remember you told me something about 00:08:23.43\00:08:24.90 when you were actually moving from this place, 00:08:24.93\00:08:26.67 you were going to another place and a cyclone hit then. 00:08:26.70\00:08:28.97 Yeah, this house is amazing 00:08:29.00\00:08:32.11 'cause it was built by some people 00:08:32.14\00:08:34.31 who intended it for it to be a tourist place, a bungalow. 00:08:34.34\00:08:39.95 Nobody ever came and there was dispute over 00:08:39.98\00:08:42.35 who owned it and it was standing, 00:08:42.38\00:08:44.45 it was staying there until we came 00:08:44.49\00:08:46.72 and we asked them if we could stay here. 00:08:46.76\00:08:48.49 We stayed here for two years and then when we left, 00:08:48.52\00:08:52.53 we were just about to leave 00:08:52.56\00:08:53.90 'cause that's about time we were donated the aircraft 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.23 and so we wanted to go and live near the airstrip, 00:08:56.26\00:08:58.30 the northern part of the island. 00:08:58.33\00:09:00.44 And just on that very weekend we got hit by a cyclone 00:09:00.47\00:09:03.54 and that's when the roof starting damage of course 00:09:03.57\00:09:06.74 now it's collapsed completely. 00:09:06.78\00:09:08.54 And then at that time there wasn't-- 00:09:08.58\00:09:10.88 Wasn't too bad but we took some stuff 00:09:10.91\00:09:13.42 up to the northern part of the island 00:09:13.45\00:09:15.52 and we stored some stuff at a house up there. 00:09:15.55\00:09:19.59 While we were coming back here 00:09:19.62\00:09:21.06 to get some more gear, the hurricane came, hit us 00:09:21.09\00:09:23.96 and all of our gear in the other house 00:09:23.99\00:09:26.06 got blown out of the house. 00:09:26.09\00:09:28.50 So it was quite an experience-- 00:09:28.53\00:09:29.86 You could say in more ways than one that 00:09:29.90\00:09:31.23 you've had to weather a few storms here in Vanuatu. 00:09:31.27\00:09:33.07 We sure have-- 00:09:33.10\00:09:34.44 Both physically and spiritually. 00:09:34.47\00:09:35.80 Yeah. 00:09:35.84\00:09:37.17 It's amazing how many storms have been associated 00:09:37.21\00:09:39.01 with our lives here and spiritually too 00:09:39.04\00:09:41.34 we've been through a lot of stormy experiences. 00:09:41.38\00:09:43.91 I'm trying to, you know, figure in my mind. 00:09:43.95\00:09:46.15 It seems like I remember that 00:09:46.18\00:09:48.32 it used to be kind of a hill here. 00:09:48.35\00:09:50.29 And then those little bungalows, 00:09:50.32\00:09:51.65 the first little bungalow was your clinic. 00:09:51.69\00:09:53.02 Yeah. Is that right? 00:09:53.05\00:09:54.39 Yeah. So it should be down there. 00:09:54.42\00:09:55.76 Let's go and have a look 00:09:55.79\00:09:57.13 and see if we can see that place. 00:09:57.16\00:09:58.49 Wow, they've gone. 00:10:09.37\00:10:13.07 It got to be somewhere. 00:10:13.11\00:10:14.98 Let's see there. 00:10:15.01\00:10:17.71 Let's see it. 00:10:17.75\00:10:19.08 Yeah, Jeff, you might remember 00:10:19.11\00:10:20.75 this was our clinic the first bungalow, 00:10:20.78\00:10:22.72 we had a second one here which was like a store room. 00:10:22.75\00:10:25.52 And then over there under that last bush 00:10:25.55\00:10:27.89 over there was our third one which was like a-- 00:10:27.92\00:10:30.09 That was my guest lodging. 00:10:30.13\00:10:31.53 That was guest lodging and for patients 00:10:31.56\00:10:34.00 when they had to stay with us. 00:10:34.00\00:10:36.06 Yeah, we did-- we did general anesthesia, 00:10:36.10\00:10:38.27 we did our first operations in here. 00:10:38.30\00:10:45.71 Where is the door? 00:10:45.74\00:10:47.14 Incredible. 00:10:58.82\00:11:01.42 It's been a lot of changes on the hangar out 00:11:12.63\00:11:14.30 since the last time we were here. 00:11:14.34\00:11:15.77 Joe Marshal who worked with our ministry 00:11:15.80\00:11:17.24 in the Philippines ended up coming to Vanuatu 00:11:17.27\00:11:19.64 and did a lot of working here. 00:11:19.67\00:11:21.01 He was a teacher and stuff. 00:11:21.04\00:11:22.38 He build down here extra spare room for guests 00:11:22.41\00:11:25.61 which is really nice now because that was a problem 00:11:25.65\00:11:27.95 before when we were here, 00:11:27.98\00:11:29.32 this was this all open and in struts, 00:11:29.35\00:11:30.82 it's all enclosed now 00:11:30.85\00:11:32.95 and then if we come around over here. 00:11:32.99\00:11:35.29 This is something I was asking Mark 00:11:35.32\00:11:36.93 to really push forward to get done to help 00:11:36.96\00:11:39.26 with their living situation 00:11:39.29\00:11:40.63 but they installed two real showers. 00:11:40.66\00:11:44.20 And so you don't have to go over 00:11:44.23\00:11:45.90 to those other showers where the patients were out 00:11:45.93\00:11:47.67 and put cold buckets of water over your head. 00:11:47.70\00:11:50.24 You can actually go in here 00:11:50.27\00:11:51.81 and take a real bona fide shower 00:11:51.84\00:11:54.94 and then they developed 00:11:54.98\00:11:56.51 this washroom like a utility room. 00:11:56.54\00:11:58.11 Washing machine, they got a lot of clothes here soaking. 00:11:58.15\00:12:02.72 And the other I wanted to show you 00:12:02.75\00:12:04.25 was the addition outside here. 00:12:04.29\00:12:06.39 They were working on this last time we're here too. 00:12:06.42\00:12:09.36 In fact when I was here last time 00:12:09.39\00:12:11.36 I was helping Joe put these panels up right here 00:12:11.39\00:12:14.56 and now it's all enclosed, they've got this roof on. 00:12:14.60\00:12:17.17 And this really adds a nice dimension 00:12:17.20\00:12:19.60 to the hangar house. 00:12:19.63\00:12:22.10 And the other thing that I wanted to show you 00:12:22.14\00:12:24.01 maybe if you saw the last video, 00:12:24.04\00:12:25.81 Joe Marshall was a building a brand new custom design 00:12:25.84\00:12:28.24 dirty kitchen for the patients over at the patient house. 00:12:28.28\00:12:30.78 And it's been used out for about a year 00:12:30.81\00:12:33.48 and four months that was the last time we were here. 00:12:33.52\00:12:36.05 I'll take you over and take a look at it 00:12:36.08\00:12:37.59 and see what it looks like today. 00:12:37.62\00:12:41.09 Well, you can definitely tell it's being used 00:12:41.12\00:12:42.72 when we were here last time 00:12:42.76\00:12:44.09 Joe built the very first fire in here 00:12:44.13\00:12:46.43 and he had this custom up graft system 00:12:46.46\00:12:48.90 that he built that goes-- 00:12:48.93\00:12:50.50 It takes all the smoke up that way, 00:12:50.53\00:12:52.07 definitely we can tell it's been used. 00:12:52.10\00:12:53.94 What happens here at the clinic is that 00:12:53.97\00:12:56.27 when people are admitted 00:12:56.30\00:12:57.64 and then they stay over in the patient house, 00:12:57.67\00:12:59.31 the family members provide food for them 00:12:59.34\00:13:01.31 while they're here, so Mark and Naomi 00:13:01.34\00:13:02.68 don't have to cook for the patients. 00:13:02.71\00:13:04.05 So this is where they can cook all the food 00:13:04.08\00:13:05.65 to feed the patients that are the patient house. 00:13:05.68\00:13:11.09 This project was basically 00:13:11.12\00:13:13.86 a medical missionary project from the start. 00:13:13.89\00:13:15.86 We didn't have the plane to begin with. 00:13:15.89\00:13:18.43 It was just simply operating a small clinic in the bush 00:13:18.46\00:13:21.70 and from there it's grown into what it is today. 00:13:21.73\00:13:24.60 Yeah, we deal with a lot of-- 00:13:24.63\00:13:26.60 A lot of people coming through here. 00:13:26.63\00:13:28.27 We've got different types of patients, 00:13:28.30\00:13:30.07 we've got inpatients who are here for special care 00:13:30.11\00:13:33.94 and surgical cases, obstetric cases 00:13:33.98\00:13:37.78 and then we have outpatients who come and visit us here. 00:13:37.81\00:13:41.12 And then when I go and visit other islands, 00:13:41.15\00:13:42.62 I often run into other cases and many people 00:13:42.65\00:13:45.22 who'll need for example teeth to be pulled 00:13:45.25\00:13:48.02 or just to have check ups, 00:13:48.06\00:13:49.59 blood pressure check ups and minor illnesses. 00:13:49.62\00:13:52.43 So we have the full spectrum. 00:13:52.46\00:13:53.96 We have a lot of people coming through 00:13:54.00\00:13:55.73 I think if we were to go through the community, 00:13:55.76\00:14:00.04 I could tell you that-- most of the people 00:14:00.07\00:14:03.34 who've been patients at some time in this whole area 00:14:03.37\00:14:06.27 like everybody has come in here at some point. 00:14:06.31\00:14:09.44 And when I go places I'm constantly interacting 00:14:09.48\00:14:12.28 with former patients. 00:14:12.31\00:14:15.08 A countless times I've just gone to bed-- 00:14:15.12\00:14:18.35 just head just hit the pillow 00:14:18.39\00:14:20.52 and then it's seems only five minutes in 00:14:20.56\00:14:23.19 and the door knocks. 00:14:23.22\00:14:24.56 And somebody is knocking they need help 00:14:24.59\00:14:25.93 because of somebody, so it can be really exhausting. 00:14:25.96\00:14:29.53 It's taken its toll, I think we've aged 00:14:29.56\00:14:32.17 a lot from being here but it's a blessing too. 00:14:32.20\00:14:34.67 I really believe that God sustains us in our work. 00:14:34.70\00:14:38.54 I've been able to handle illnesses 00:14:38.57\00:14:40.34 and handle difficulties physical exhaustion 00:14:40.38\00:14:43.55 much better than I ever would have anticipated. 00:14:43.58\00:14:46.28 I think God really is sustaining me in my work 00:14:46.31\00:14:48.88 so I'm so thankful for that. 00:14:48.92\00:14:50.25 The clinic isn't the only part of the project that's growing, 00:15:24.49\00:15:27.72 Laymen Ministries' Matafanga school 00:15:27.76\00:15:29.52 is becoming well-known throughout the Island of Gaua. 00:15:29.56\00:15:34.10 Matafanga would not be possible without your support. 00:15:34.10\00:15:37.33 This is a Laymen Ministries project. 00:15:37.37\00:15:39.17 It's always been a Laymen Ministries project. 00:15:39.20\00:15:41.50 One thing it's kind of unusual about 00:15:41.54\00:15:43.10 this project is that Laymen Ministries throw us 00:15:43.14\00:15:47.38 a set of circumstances has ended up 00:15:47.41\00:15:50.15 being requested to establish a church institution school. 00:15:50.18\00:15:56.65 That might be a first, I'm not sure in this division, 00:15:56.69\00:16:01.09 this area of the church, 00:16:01.12\00:16:02.46 but I think it's a blessing to see 00:16:02.49\00:16:04.36 how a lay ministry is able to work hand in hand 00:16:04.39\00:16:09.03 with the denomination in establishing a church that-- 00:16:09.06\00:16:12.23 A church school it's a 100% a church school. 00:16:12.27\00:16:14.60 It really is a denominational school 00:16:14.64\00:16:16.71 and yet Laymen Ministries it's really-- 00:16:16.74\00:16:19.37 Laymen Ministries' baby, so the school side of it 00:16:19.41\00:16:22.41 is really interesting in that respect. 00:16:22.44\00:16:24.48 And without Laymen Ministries we could have never have done 00:16:24.51\00:16:26.72 what we're doing. 00:16:26.75\00:16:28.62 Yes, the reason that we have a school here in-- 00:16:28.65\00:16:31.72 Up here in this northern part of Vanuatu 00:16:31.75\00:16:34.52 is that we could see a great need 00:16:34.56\00:16:36.76 for the children to have better education. 00:16:36.79\00:16:39.16 While there are other schools available, 00:16:39.19\00:16:42.13 we could see that there was definitely a need 00:16:42.16\00:16:44.40 for training future leaders for even just for the country 00:16:44.43\00:16:47.40 and also for furthering God's work here in Vanuatu. 00:16:47.44\00:16:51.14 We see a great need because here in Torba Province 00:16:51.17\00:16:54.34 it's known as the last province in Vanuatu 00:16:54.38\00:16:56.48 that means very few leaders come form Torba. 00:16:56.51\00:17:00.08 And we'd like to change that. 00:17:00.12\00:17:01.45 We'd like to see leaders and kids graduating 00:17:01.48\00:17:04.35 from the school going out and doing something 00:17:04.39\00:17:07.29 that makes a difference in the world around us 00:17:07.32\00:17:09.59 and also in preparing them 00:17:09.62\00:17:11.13 to carry on God's work in the future. 00:17:11.16\00:17:18.17 So this is our current grade 00:17:25.97\00:17:27.84 seven and eight classroom right here 00:17:27.88\00:17:29.58 and as you can see we're in the middle 00:17:29.61\00:17:30.95 of preparing a roof and the structure 00:17:30.98\00:17:34.02 of the building is not real great. 00:17:34.05\00:17:36.05 So we really need a permanent classroom 00:17:36.08\00:17:38.19 for our students to replace this building. 00:17:38.22\00:17:42.52 Over here we have our teacher housing accommodation here. 00:17:42.56\00:17:47.93 Currently we have coconut leaves up on the roof 00:17:47.96\00:17:50.07 that was for the cyclone to prevent 00:17:50.10\00:17:52.03 the roofs getting ripped up, but the roofing is getting old 00:17:52.07\00:17:55.40 and needing repairs. 00:17:55.44\00:17:56.77 And we need to upgrade the teacher housing also. 00:17:56.81\00:18:03.55 So this is our missionary transit house here, 00:18:03.58\00:18:07.88 currently we have Scott and Kathy in here 00:18:07.92\00:18:10.52 and they'll be working on fixing up 00:18:10.55\00:18:12.59 another small staff house at the back. 00:18:12.62\00:18:14.99 So that this will be free for another couple 00:18:15.02\00:18:17.56 that want to come in with their family, 00:18:17.59\00:18:19.69 a bit later in the year. 00:18:19.73\00:18:21.73 So we like to have this as our transit 00:18:21.76\00:18:24.50 so that it helps people during their adjustment period 00:18:24.53\00:18:27.17 while we get accommodation sorted out for them. 00:18:27.20\00:18:30.51 And at the back here, 00:18:30.54\00:18:32.91 we have the very first staff house 00:18:32.94\00:18:34.98 that was built on the campus 00:18:35.01\00:18:36.51 and that's the one that Scott and Kathy 00:18:36.54\00:18:38.68 will be doing some upgrading to make it suitable for them. 00:18:38.71\00:18:42.08 And then we'll be needing another one similar 00:18:42.12\00:18:43.89 to this for another couple that plan to come soon also. 00:18:43.92\00:18:50.06 For this school to be registered, 00:18:50.09\00:18:52.79 the government wanted something different 00:18:52.83\00:18:55.10 because they said the nearest primary school is too close, 00:18:55.13\00:18:58.90 even though it's another decent walk. 00:18:58.93\00:19:03.20 So Naomi and Mark came up with the idea that 00:19:03.24\00:19:06.41 they would cater for special needs in the community. 00:19:06.44\00:19:10.38 And this is one of those classes, 00:19:10.41\00:19:12.71 these three lovely students out all day 00:19:12.75\00:19:17.32 and so I have been teaching them 00:19:17.35\00:19:20.69 different sets of words. 00:19:20.72\00:19:22.36 This last time we just learnt body words 00:19:22.39\00:19:25.93 and that's what we're revising today. 00:19:25.96\00:19:28.50 So they're special students but they're very bright. 00:19:28.53\00:19:31.57 They've all passed on their test 00:19:31.60\00:19:34.00 and yeah, they could go 00:19:34.04\00:19:38.47 so it's a pleasure to teach them 00:19:38.51\00:19:41.24 and help them integrate into the school community. 00:19:41.28\00:19:44.41 Hey, Scottie. 00:19:44.45\00:19:45.78 Hey, Jeff. Good to see you. 00:19:45.81\00:19:48.02 What are you working on? 00:19:48.05\00:19:49.42 I'm just making some components 00:19:49.45\00:19:51.79 for some chairs that the boys are making tomorrow. 00:19:51.82\00:19:55.09 How many kids do you have right now with your teaching? 00:19:55.12\00:19:58.03 I've got one sort of apprentice 00:19:58.06\00:20:00.50 and there's a bunch of lower schools boys 00:20:00.53\00:20:03.20 is probably up to 15 to 18 of them, 00:20:03.23\00:20:07.17 then they'd come different times. 00:20:07.20\00:20:09.77 Our objective is to give the boys and girls, 00:20:09.80\00:20:14.84 if girls come in the rest as well. 00:20:14.88\00:20:17.98 The opportunity to get some practical skills 00:20:18.01\00:20:20.55 to use in the field perhaps they want to work for the Lord, 00:20:20.58\00:20:26.92 building on other islands that we can equip them 00:20:26.96\00:20:29.22 with skills to built churches or schools or anything. 00:20:29.26\00:20:35.86 Like many things here in this project, 00:20:35.90\00:20:37.93 the school has come a long way 00:20:37.97\00:20:39.40 since its inception years ago. 00:20:39.43\00:20:41.90 Our Maule M-7 has come a long ways too 00:20:41.94\00:20:43.87 as the heavy usage in the islands has taken 00:20:43.91\00:20:46.44 its toll on the airplane. 00:20:46.47\00:20:48.18 Northern Vanuatu, it's-- it's a remote area. 00:20:48.21\00:20:53.95 The only way you can get between islands 00:20:53.98\00:20:55.75 because it's an island nation 83 different islands. 00:20:55.78\00:20:59.29 The only way you can get between islands 00:20:59.32\00:21:00.72 is by boat or by plane. 00:21:00.76\00:21:02.86 When it comes to emergencies, you really need an aircraft. 00:21:02.89\00:21:10.63 And we have since discovered that it would be really, 00:21:10.67\00:21:14.94 really difficult to find any production aircraft-- 00:21:14.97\00:21:17.51 Foresee the production aircraft that could handle the workload 00:21:17.54\00:21:22.54 that we're doing here flying into small bush airstrips. 00:21:22.58\00:21:26.18 And carrying loads that it's carrying maybe a-- 00:21:26.21\00:21:30.29 or something like that but I think the Lord knew 00:21:30.32\00:21:33.62 that we were-- we need to stay 00:21:33.66\00:21:35.36 within a budget an operating budget 00:21:35.39\00:21:37.09 that were still manageable than that. 00:21:37.13\00:21:39.16 So this really is the most suitable aircraft 00:21:39.19\00:21:41.60 I think for this project. 00:21:41.63\00:21:46.30 It's kind of unthinkable to imagine 00:21:46.33\00:21:50.51 this project operating without this aircraft 00:21:50.54\00:21:52.74 so it worries me a little bit if the plane ever-- 00:21:52.77\00:21:56.78 was not in service. 00:21:56.81\00:21:59.71 Then I think the project would kind of collapse 00:21:59.75\00:22:02.15 because we use it for everything 00:22:02.18\00:22:04.42 and it's so important. 00:22:04.45\00:22:06.45 We need to keep this plane fine, 00:22:06.49\00:22:08.82 we need to keep it flying 'cause it's so essential 00:22:08.86\00:22:10.63 for our work here. 00:22:10.66\00:22:12.69 In terms of fuel and maintenance, 00:22:12.73\00:22:14.66 it cost us a 2-3,000 a month. 00:22:14.73\00:22:17.70 When it comes to aircraft, 00:22:17.73\00:22:19.83 engines need to be changed at the TBR of the engine 00:22:19.87\00:22:23.47 which in our case is 2000 hours 00:22:23.51\00:22:26.71 and we're just coming up to that now. 00:22:26.74\00:22:29.24 We have to change the engine, we have no choice. 00:22:29.28\00:22:31.45 If we're gonna continue flying, we have to have a new engine. 00:22:31.48\00:22:34.48 And we're now looking at a recondition engine 00:22:34.52\00:22:38.45 which is gonna cost over $45,000 US 00:22:38.49\00:22:42.39 a lot of money we put deposit on that. 00:22:42.42\00:22:44.46 We don't have the full amount but we believe that 00:22:44.49\00:22:47.00 God is gonna pay somebody to help us 00:22:47.03\00:22:48.53 because unless we have that engine, 00:22:48.56\00:22:51.37 we have to stop operating that means not only 00:22:51.40\00:22:53.27 the medical aviation aspect of it. 00:22:53.30\00:22:56.40 All the patients are gonna be affected and our school 00:22:56.44\00:23:00.11 and this whole project is gonna be adversely affected. 00:23:00.14\00:23:03.78 So we believe that God will provide the funds 00:23:03.81\00:23:08.12 and that we're just excited to know that we're in-- 00:23:08.15\00:23:11.29 we're in a faith ministry and we know that 00:23:11.32\00:23:14.59 God is gonna work to help us. 00:23:14.62\00:23:18.96 Yeah, another thing it needs to happened 00:23:18.99\00:23:20.73 for this aircraft. 00:23:20.76\00:23:22.06 We get a lot of damage on the tail wing 00:23:22.10\00:23:25.03 because of terns flying up on these bushes. 00:23:25.07\00:23:27.30 So we need to get regularly we're gonna have 00:23:27.34\00:23:31.34 to purchase a new tail wing 00:23:31.37\00:23:34.74 and that should be done sometime this year. 00:23:34.78\00:23:38.88 Tail feathers including the radar need to be replaced. 00:23:38.91\00:23:44.72 This airplane has a really interesting history. 00:23:44.75\00:23:46.86 It was purchased from mall by a man name Gary Smith. 00:23:46.89\00:23:49.52 His friends all called him Bear 00:23:49.56\00:23:52.06 and Bear had kind of a colorful history himself 00:23:52.09\00:23:54.93 because Bear used to fly 00:23:54.96\00:23:56.30 for what was called the Blue Angels. 00:23:56.33\00:23:58.07 It's like a acrobatic team of fighter jets 00:23:58.10\00:24:01.70 and he was involved with the military 00:24:01.74\00:24:03.07 and had a lot of friends. 00:24:03.10\00:24:04.44 So lot of people in the aviation world knew him. 00:24:04.47\00:24:05.87 He worked at Boeing the last years of his life. 00:24:05.91\00:24:08.74 And he was-- I was told involved 00:24:08.78\00:24:10.68 with designing the ejector seat for the F15 fighter jet. 00:24:10.71\00:24:14.48 Well, when Gary or Bear 00:24:14.52\00:24:16.28 as his friends called him retired, 00:24:16.32\00:24:18.69 he ordered two brand new planes. 00:24:18.72\00:24:20.82 One was a Super Decathlon 00:24:20.86\00:24:22.99 and other one was this Maule M-7 Super Rocket 00:24:23.02\00:24:26.53 and this one came special custom ordered from Maule 00:24:26.56\00:24:29.40 with a sunset orange paint job in sapphire blue trim. 00:24:29.43\00:24:34.04 And fully decked out with search and rescue gear 00:24:34.07\00:24:36.54 'cause he planned on doing volunteer work 00:24:36.57\00:24:38.17 for the search and rescue. 00:24:38.21\00:24:40.11 Right after he purchased this plane, 00:24:40.14\00:24:41.81 he was out in California with his Decathlon teaching a man 00:24:41.84\00:24:46.65 from I think it was Post Falls, Idaho 00:24:46.68\00:24:48.45 and they were doing touch and goes. 00:24:48.48\00:24:50.19 And something went wrong 00:24:50.22\00:24:51.55 and he crashed the Super Decathlon 00:24:51.59\00:24:53.22 and both he and the fellow from Post Falls, Idaho 00:24:53.25\00:24:55.86 were killed unfortunately in that wreck. 00:24:55.89\00:24:58.46 His widow was left with this plane 00:24:58.49\00:25:00.16 and Joel the man who donated this plane to us 00:25:00.20\00:25:02.50 bought this plane from his widow. 00:25:02.53\00:25:06.23 It's an unfortunate situation that Bear lost his life, 00:25:06.27\00:25:10.37 I bet little did he know that the plane 00:25:10.41\00:25:12.64 that he custom ordered was gonna be salvaged 00:25:12.67\00:25:15.01 for doing exactly what he intended 00:25:15.04\00:25:17.55 and that was to search out and save people. 00:25:17.58\00:25:20.72 And that's what this plane is used for today. 00:25:20.75\00:25:22.65 It's a truly a search and rescue plane. 00:25:22.68\00:25:28.36 Yeah, we've-- it's interesting 00:25:28.39\00:25:30.06 being on the receiving end of donations. 00:25:30.09\00:25:32.69 We are a faith ministry, faith based 00:25:32.73\00:25:35.50 and we don't operate with income. 00:25:35.53\00:25:38.97 We have people helping us and we've learned that-- 00:25:39.00\00:25:42.87 That givers have, have characteristics 00:25:42.90\00:25:46.01 and one of those characteristics 00:25:46.04\00:25:47.48 are they're usually people who want to see results. 00:25:47.51\00:25:51.48 And they focus primarily on things that are visible 00:25:51.51\00:25:55.58 and tangible and that gives it, 00:25:55.62\00:25:58.49 that's feeling of satisfaction when they give, which is good 00:25:58.52\00:26:01.82 'cause that's what drives projects like this. 00:26:01.86\00:26:05.46 That's how, how we're funded, how people help us. 00:26:05.49\00:26:08.06 We've discovered that people like buildings, 00:26:08.10\00:26:10.17 they like seeing things going up. 00:26:10.20\00:26:11.57 They like to see that progress which is good 00:26:11.60\00:26:14.67 because in a place like this 00:26:14.70\00:26:17.41 we really need to infrastructure, 00:26:17.44\00:26:19.61 we need help with that so that's being a blessing 00:26:19.64\00:26:21.54 to have so many people help with that. 00:26:21.58\00:26:23.98 One of the weaknesses I think with donors 00:26:24.01\00:26:27.75 in spite of their good intentions sometimes 00:26:27.78\00:26:29.62 they tend to forget the maintenance 00:26:29.65\00:26:32.02 aspect of a project for example, 00:26:32.05\00:26:34.82 if a school is built, in their heart of hearts 00:26:34.86\00:26:38.19 they don't want to see that thing dwindling into nothing 00:26:38.23\00:26:41.53 because they put their money into that. 00:26:41.56\00:26:43.40 But somehow along the-- in the experiences that 00:26:43.43\00:26:46.90 they're going through they tend to have a-- 00:26:46.94\00:26:48.97 They have tendency to forget that maintenance of a project 00:26:49.00\00:26:53.14 is just as important, the upkeep of the project 00:26:53.17\00:26:55.11 is just as important if not more so 00:26:55.14\00:26:57.91 than the actual establishment 00:26:57.95\00:26:59.28 of the project in the first place, 00:26:59.31\00:27:00.72 so I think that's a-- that's just a human thing. 00:27:00.75\00:27:03.35 I don't think anybody intends 00:27:03.39\00:27:04.99 on making a mistake in that area 00:27:05.02\00:27:07.02 but it is a weakness with some donors 00:27:07.06\00:27:09.82 that they overlook at. 00:27:09.86\00:27:11.36 So yeah, it's incredible how-- 00:27:11.39\00:27:13.76 how much you learn about human nature 00:27:13.80\00:27:15.70 and you learn about people 00:27:15.73\00:27:17.37 when you are involved in a project like this. 00:27:17.40\00:27:18.93 And I think it's a-- 00:27:18.97\00:27:20.87 it's a character building experience for us, 00:27:20.90\00:27:22.70 you know, to go through this. 00:27:22.74\00:27:27.71 It's amazing to look back in time 00:27:35.38\00:27:37.35 and to think that just 10 years ago Dr. Mark 00:27:37.39\00:27:39.79 was performing operations in a primitive hut 00:27:39.82\00:27:42.39 and traveling to other islands by a banana boat. 00:27:42.42\00:27:45.33 But now thanks to your support. 00:27:45.36\00:27:47.56 Dr. Mark and his family are able to more effectively 00:27:47.60\00:27:50.13 reach out to the people through medical aviation 00:27:50.17\00:27:52.77 and our clinic on Gaua. 00:27:52.80\00:28:00.21 The people of Vanuatu needs your help. 00:28:08.45\00:28:11.02 If you'd like to help support this project, 00:28:11.05\00:28:13.22 contact our ministry at 414
