I've been thinking about all the years 00:00:45.34\00:00:46.77 we've been coming here to the Philippines, 00:00:46.80\00:00:48.79 came here the first time in 1997 00:00:48.82\00:00:51.98 and I remember when Allen and Maritess Branson 00:00:52.01\00:00:54.29 asked me to come up to the village of San Jose 00:00:54.32\00:00:57.01 up in the mountains here. 00:00:57.04\00:00:58.84 And I went into that village and I was just horrified 00:00:58.87\00:01:02.50 and shocked by what I saw. 00:01:02.53\00:01:04.33 In fact, I coined this phrase that the people here, 00:01:04.36\00:01:06.75 the Katutubo people are what the Tagalogs 00:01:06.78\00:01:08.90 call the Mangyans in this area 00:01:08.93\00:01:11.71 where an almost forgotten people 00:01:11.74\00:01:14.49 and it seems like they are most forgotten 00:01:14.52\00:01:16.32 because in the villages I'd never seen 00:01:16.35\00:01:19.46 any kind of conditions like this in my whole life. 00:01:19.49\00:01:22.30 I saw old black and white pictures of-- 00:01:59.43\00:02:02.20 from the 1940's 00:02:02.23\00:02:04.63 after the Japanese were driven out 00:02:04.66\00:02:06.54 and I saw the pictures of the Mangyans 00:02:06.57\00:02:09.42 or the Katutubo people with the soldiers 00:02:09.45\00:02:11.45 and were no different then what I saw in 1997. 00:02:11.48\00:02:15.96 The disease and the conditions, the fungus on the skins. 00:02:15.99\00:02:20.86 It's the first video as we shot here in 1997 00:02:20.89\00:02:24.23 have been showing on some of our programs 00:02:24.26\00:02:26.07 and those videos and those pictures 00:02:26.10\00:02:28.71 still haunt me today because of what I saw there. 00:02:28.74\00:02:32.94 Over the years we hiked into the mountains 00:02:32.97\00:02:35.06 and we got newer footage of the conditions 00:02:35.09\00:02:37.48 of some of the people there with just terrible situation 00:02:37.51\00:02:41.12 beetle nut coming out of their mouths 00:02:41.15\00:02:42.76 and their teeth missing 00:02:42.79\00:02:44.50 and they hadn't taken bath for weeks 00:02:44.53\00:02:46.81 and living under the bondage of superstition 00:02:46.84\00:02:48.88 and it was just heart wrenching and realized that 00:02:48.91\00:02:53.86 we needed to do something to help these people. 00:02:53.89\00:02:56.49 And one of the things that was really necessary was 00:02:56.52\00:03:00.08 the need of Christ in the villages 00:03:00.11\00:03:01.81 to be able to free the people 00:03:01.84\00:03:03.10 from the shackles of superstition 00:03:03.13\00:03:04.87 and bondage and to be able to establish 00:03:04.90\00:03:06.92 some kind of self birth in Christ. 00:03:06.95\00:03:11.38 An education was gonna have to play an important part. 00:03:11.41\00:03:15.04 So I remember back in 19-- early 1998 00:03:15.07\00:03:18.46 I asked Jim and Moni Webb to come here 00:03:18.49\00:03:21.05 and they retired business people in the state of Texas 00:03:21.08\00:03:23.70 and I knew that they could possible come 00:03:23.73\00:03:26.24 and troubleshoot this project 00:03:26.27\00:03:27.63 and help us with some ideas maybe. 00:03:27.66\00:03:30.40 Jim and Moni Webb came here 00:03:30.43\00:03:31.67 and they were only gonna stay for like six or seven weeks 00:03:31.70\00:03:34.00 and now its been 16 going on 17 years 00:03:34.03\00:03:37.03 and they are still here. 00:03:37.06\00:03:39.94 Working in these villages 00:03:39.97\00:03:41.04 was an extremely hard thing to start out with. 00:03:41.07\00:03:44.89 So we saw that education is gonna be key role 00:03:44.92\00:03:48.70 but trying to convince the older people that 00:03:48.73\00:03:53.13 they needed to make changes was gonna be almost impossible. 00:03:53.16\00:03:56.84 They say old habits die hard and that's really true. 00:03:56.87\00:04:00.75 And so we realized that it was-- 00:04:00.78\00:04:03.47 if any kind of change was gonna take place 00:04:03.50\00:04:05.31 it's gonna have to be through the young people 00:04:05.34\00:04:07.03 or through the children. 00:04:07.06\00:04:08.62 So we started schools 00:04:08.65\00:04:10.46 and you know these people are like a nomadic tribe. 00:04:10.49\00:04:12.90 They only stay in these little makeshift houses 00:04:12.93\00:04:15.70 for a few months out of the year 00:04:15.73\00:04:16.81 and then they are up in the mountains 00:04:16.84\00:04:18.20 doing slash and burn 00:04:18.23\00:04:20.22 planting rice and harvesting rice 00:04:20.25\00:04:21.90 and just living from one meal to the next 00:04:21.93\00:04:24.54 and often times-- having times 00:04:24.57\00:04:26.17 where they were starving 00:04:26.20\00:04:28.06 and happening to dig up poisonous root crops 00:04:28.09\00:04:31.02 and washing them in the rivers to try to be able to 00:04:31.05\00:04:34.54 find some kind of simple foods to eat 00:04:34.57\00:04:36.34 and eating is always called yami and cassava, 00:04:36.37\00:04:41.64 basically food it has no nutrition 00:04:41.67\00:04:43.90 but puts a little bit of food 00:04:43.93\00:04:45.01 in the bottom of their stomachs. 00:04:45.04\00:04:47.36 So trying to establish a school 00:04:47.39\00:04:49.49 at a place like this is extremely hard. 00:04:49.52\00:04:52.62 And over period of time, we started building schools. 00:04:52.65\00:04:56.44 In fact, we build schools in some places 00:04:56.47\00:04:58.19 and it just didn't work and we had to move 00:04:58.22\00:04:59.92 to a different place after that. 00:04:59.95\00:05:03.13 And then places like Pinabayaan 00:05:03.16\00:05:05.45 and we started to having more, more students come 00:05:05.48\00:05:07.58 and have got up to 103 students there. 00:05:07.61\00:05:10.96 And then Cagbalete was another village 00:05:10.99\00:05:13.20 that we established a school and it started growing 00:05:13.23\00:05:15.60 and we built a campus there. 00:05:15.63\00:05:17.64 But beings at the people were nomadic 00:05:17.67\00:05:19.98 the parents always wanted to pull their kids out of school 00:05:20.01\00:05:22.45 and they always would say things like 00:05:22.48\00:05:24.58 oh, we are Mangyan, 00:05:24.61\00:05:25.87 you know, we don't need education. 00:05:25.90\00:05:27.13 This is the way our fathers lived 00:05:27.16\00:05:28.73 and our forefathers lived. 00:05:28.76\00:05:30.53 Dreams are for the Tagalog 00:05:30.56\00:05:31.88 or the child's of the majority people 00:05:31.91\00:05:33.50 but not for Mangyans, Mangyans don't have dreams 00:05:33.53\00:05:35.77 they just live this way. 00:05:35.80\00:05:37.69 But we encouraged the parents 00:05:37.72\00:05:39.51 keep putting their kids in school, 00:05:39.54\00:05:40.75 kids came and went and we started setting 00:05:40.78\00:05:42.76 a standard higher and higher for the kids. 00:05:42.79\00:05:45.48 And we started seeing change starting to develop. 00:05:45.51\00:05:47.93 Kids would come and go 00:05:47.96\00:05:49.19 and some of the kids would stay, 00:05:49.22\00:05:50.84 some of the kids that only last a half year, 00:05:50.87\00:05:53.57 and we started to roll saying that, 00:05:53.60\00:05:55.18 if they had three absences 00:05:55.21\00:05:57.06 they had to leave the school till the next school year. 00:05:57.09\00:06:00.11 And they started to understand that 00:06:00.14\00:06:01.81 these foreigners, these Americans were taking 00:06:01.84\00:06:05.30 this education idea very seriously 00:06:05.33\00:06:08.96 and some of the children 00:06:08.99\00:06:10.02 started attending school and not missing. 00:06:10.05\00:06:12.26 Some of the children would come here very hungry 00:06:12.29\00:06:14.33 the teachers would feed them. 00:06:14.36\00:06:16.65 And over a period of time 00:06:16.68\00:06:17.95 we started seeing the children grow older and older 00:06:17.98\00:06:20.23 and they started learning English, 00:06:20.26\00:06:21.49 they started understanding their Bibles. 00:06:21.52\00:06:23.15 They started growing and maturing 00:06:23.18\00:06:25.91 and it was a delight. 00:06:25.94\00:06:28.78 Education is a long time process. 00:07:30.35\00:07:34.18 I mean we-- we are not only teaching 00:07:34.21\00:07:37.50 English and math to these kids. 00:07:37.53\00:07:40.53 Actually what we ask them 00:07:40.56\00:07:42.16 is a complete mentality and culture change. 00:07:42.19\00:07:47.27 We ask them to understand new concepts of life, 00:07:47.30\00:07:51.02 planning ahead, hygiene. 00:07:51.05\00:07:54.70 We try to help them to prepare for future. 00:07:54.73\00:08:01.01 And let me remind us 00:08:01.04\00:08:04.41 that every thing we're doing 00:08:04.44\00:08:06.86 is to prepare these native children 00:08:06.89\00:08:09.65 these indigenous children 00:08:09.68\00:08:11.94 to become missionaries to their own people. 00:08:11.97\00:08:16.51 That's our whole focus. 00:08:16.54\00:08:18.71 They are used to-- 00:08:18.74\00:08:20.48 to ask and demand for things and we try to help them. 00:08:20.51\00:08:24.52 You can do something with your life, 00:08:24.55\00:08:26.74 you can be independent, 00:08:26.77\00:08:28.39 you can prepare for yourself if you know how 00:08:28.42\00:08:31.10 and we are willing to teach you. 00:08:31.13\00:08:32.60 So it's not only a matter of teaching English and math 00:08:32.63\00:08:37.14 there is much more behind it. 00:08:37.17\00:08:39.13 And that takes time, it takes time 00:08:39.16\00:08:41.64 for the parents to allow their kids to attempt. 00:08:41.67\00:08:44.50 You know parents always made it difficult, 00:08:44.53\00:08:46.16 it seems like the parents are constantly trying 00:08:46.19\00:08:48.08 to pull their kids out of the school. 00:08:48.11\00:08:49.27 They just didn't see a vision for, 00:08:49.30\00:08:51.30 you know, the idea of education 00:08:51.33\00:08:52.82 for this minority group here in the mountains and-- 00:08:52.85\00:08:56.29 but then they would come to church services 00:08:56.32\00:08:58.09 and they would listen to the missionary preach. 00:08:58.12\00:09:00.11 They started to listen to their children 00:09:00.14\00:09:01.74 talk to them in their homes 00:09:01.77\00:09:03.97 and you don't have to-- you have to understand 00:09:04.00\00:09:05.21 in this kind of culture there is very, 00:09:05.24\00:09:07.07 you know, little interaction 00:09:07.10\00:09:08.36 between the children and the parents. 00:09:08.39\00:09:11.64 There is very little emotion, there is very little affection 00:09:11.67\00:09:14.15 and the concept of saying 00:09:14.18\00:09:15.46 I love you to a child is the most unheard off. 00:09:15.49\00:09:18.41 And the missionaries here 00:09:18.44\00:09:20.53 were talking about the love of Christ 00:09:20.56\00:09:21.97 and they were touching the children. 00:09:22.00\00:09:23.81 They were telling the children they love them 00:09:23.84\00:09:26.81 and they were building these bonds 00:09:26.84\00:09:28.33 and these kids would go home 00:09:28.36\00:09:30.09 and share with the parents the things they were learning 00:09:30.12\00:09:33.11 and this change started gradually to come. 00:09:33.14\00:09:36.47 Some of the children started reading really well, 00:09:36.50\00:09:39.44 and then they started reading Bible books 00:09:39.47\00:09:41.68 and reading books on history 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.69 and geography and learning mathematics 00:09:43.72\00:09:47.00 and learning their Bible's 00:09:47.03\00:09:49.05 and the teachers and the missionaries, 00:09:49.08\00:09:50.97 the student missionaries that Came 00:09:51.00\00:09:53.10 year after year were incorporating the Bible 00:09:53.13\00:09:55.82 into their grammar lessons, into their mathematics. 00:09:55.85\00:09:58.49 And so the children became more and more acquainted 00:09:58.52\00:10:00.54 with the scriptures and the truths the scriptures. 00:10:00.57\00:10:02.72 And you know there's power in the word 00:10:02.75\00:10:04.65 to be able to bring about change. 00:10:04.68\00:10:06.67 And that's probably for me personally 00:10:06.70\00:10:09.13 and one of the reasons I'm still a Christian till day 00:10:09.16\00:10:10.84 'cause of the word. 00:10:10.87\00:10:12.41 You know it's not because of what people say 00:10:12.44\00:10:14.15 good or bad either way 00:10:14.18\00:10:15.38 but it's because of the word I'm here. 00:10:15.41\00:10:17.00 And I know it's because of that word that 00:10:17.03\00:10:19.11 will sustain these kids to stay in these schools 00:10:19.14\00:10:21.58 and to be able to be part of a better society, 00:10:21.61\00:10:24.73 to be able to come back to their own people group. 00:10:24.76\00:10:27.20 Back in around 2002, 00:10:46.40\00:10:48.90 we decided it'd be a really good opportunity 00:10:48.93\00:10:50.90 as the school started to grow. 00:10:50.93\00:10:53.41 They started having student missionaries come here. 00:10:53.44\00:10:57.16 I remember the first student missionary 00:10:57.19\00:10:58.70 was a young man by name of Tim De La Torre 00:10:58.73\00:11:00.90 came here from California. 00:11:00.93\00:11:03.10 And that opened the door for a wonderful opportunity 00:11:03.13\00:11:07.04 for young people to be involved with this project. 00:11:07.07\00:11:09.82 We've had young people who had come here 00:11:09.85\00:11:11.95 from South Africa, from various parts of Europe 00:11:11.98\00:11:16.19 and also from Australia. 00:11:16.22\00:11:19.52 And most recently we have a young girl name Andrea 00:11:19.55\00:11:21.73 that's here from the country of Honduras. 00:11:21.76\00:11:24.36 These student missionaries 00:11:24.39\00:11:25.61 have coming on a year after year 00:11:25.64\00:11:27.08 and they worked with the students 00:11:27.11\00:11:28.77 and help them with understanding 00:11:28.80\00:11:30.22 how to read and write 00:11:30.25\00:11:32.30 and how to study the Bible for themselves. 00:11:32.33\00:11:35.39 The real nuts and bolts if I can say it that way 00:11:35.42\00:11:38.15 of making this whole operation successful 00:11:38.18\00:11:40.99 is our Filipino and Filipina coworkers. 00:11:41.02\00:11:43.89 The-- they've come from all different parts 00:11:43.92\00:11:46.81 for the Philippines to Tagalog, Visayan, 00:11:46.84\00:11:49.05 Ilocano various different areas 00:11:49.08\00:11:51.24 and the Philippines who have come here. 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.21 Frank and his wife 00:11:53.24\00:11:55.14 have been in this particular village eight years 00:11:55.17\00:11:57.79 working with these children. 00:11:57.82\00:12:01.79 And each one of these student missionaries 00:12:01.82\00:12:03.94 have brought with them 00:12:03.97\00:12:05.97 a bonding relationship of hugging the kids 00:12:06.00\00:12:08.99 and telling the kids that they love them 00:12:09.02\00:12:10.53 and helping them to grow spiritually 00:12:10.56\00:12:13.09 and to be able to teach them 00:12:13.12\00:12:14.44 better English and teach them math 00:12:14.47\00:12:16.75 and history and geography and Bible 00:12:16.78\00:12:19.08 and all these different things. 00:12:19.11\00:12:21.04 But more than that that they found out 00:12:21.07\00:12:22.96 that world is considerably bigger 00:12:22.99\00:12:25.07 than this whole village here. 00:12:25.10\00:12:27.02 And so they started learning about 00:12:27.05\00:12:28.43 wow, where did this student missionary come from? 00:12:28.46\00:12:30.33 Oh, they're from Switzerland and they got out a map 00:12:30.36\00:12:32.48 and they actually started grasping 00:12:32.51\00:12:34.16 the concept of the globe, the world 00:12:34.19\00:12:36.65 and that there was these other countries 00:12:36.68\00:12:38.17 and different cultures and people groups 00:12:38.20\00:12:39.62 and they were black and yellow 00:12:39.65\00:12:41.62 and white and brown and-- 00:12:41.65\00:12:46.72 it's just been a really wonderful opportunity. 00:12:46.75\00:12:49.24 This is a great opportunity for young adults 00:12:49.27\00:12:52.32 who are college age 00:12:52.35\00:12:53.51 to spend one year here 00:12:53.54\00:12:54.61 and work in these villages. 00:12:54.64\00:12:57.47 So Andrea, you are here from Honduras, 00:12:57.50\00:13:00.24 how you like it so far? 00:13:00.27\00:13:01.80 It's been a good experience. 00:13:01.83\00:13:04.10 The village, the kids are really friendly. 00:13:04.13\00:13:06.72 At first they were really shy 00:13:06.75\00:13:07.93 but then when you get to know them 00:13:07.96\00:13:09.15 its really good friendship you have with them. 00:13:09.18\00:13:13.61 How long have you been here now? 00:13:13.64\00:13:15.31 I think like a month, 00:13:15.34\00:13:19.48 I think I don't count the days. 00:13:19.51\00:13:21.30 And today where are you going? 00:13:21.33\00:13:23.46 I'm going to Mangyan 00:13:23.49\00:13:25.23 to the village I'm going to be on tour. 00:13:25.26\00:13:26.86 So you haven't had the opportunity 00:13:33.67\00:13:34.83 How many hours did they say? 00:13:34.86\00:13:36.65 Some of them tell me six hours, some of them five hours. 00:13:36.68\00:13:40.33 I'm going to say-- 00:13:40.36\00:13:41.78 Yes. 00:17:57.28\00:17:59.42 Wow, and it's almost 05:30 now 00:17:59.45\00:18:01.94 and this is how the people live here. 00:18:01.97\00:18:06.17 And there's actually a couple families here, 00:18:06.20\00:18:08.33 the children are back. 00:18:08.36\00:18:11.72 This is the homes. Hi, how are you? 00:18:11.75\00:18:17.65 This is the new girl coming to work here in the school. 00:18:17.68\00:18:22.33 Let's walk down through here. 00:18:31.44\00:18:35.08 But some of the kids are happy to be home, 00:18:35.11\00:18:36.56 you can see them. 00:18:36.59\00:18:37.70 Have you ever seen pound rice like this before? 00:18:37.73\00:18:39.88 No. 00:18:39.91\00:18:43.21 This guy is an expert rice pounder. 00:18:43.24\00:18:50.38 So take this thing, and this is how they-- 00:18:50.41\00:18:53.41 instead of having machine do it. 00:18:53.44\00:18:54.77 And so this is gonna be a real common sound 00:19:01.96\00:19:04.49 in the whole corner of the village 00:19:04.52\00:19:05.56 every evening about this time you will be hearing-- 00:19:05.59\00:19:08.44 They are pounding them. Yeah. 00:19:08.47\00:19:10.83 You want her to try? I can do it. 00:19:10.86\00:19:16.12 Its lot easier then it looks, 00:19:16.15\00:19:17.89 I mean lot harder than it looks. 00:19:17.92\00:19:21.14 Like that. 00:19:21.17\00:19:26.05 I think you should do it. 00:19:26.08\00:19:27.64 Okay. 00:19:27.67\00:19:28.90 I did waste his rice about that careful. 00:19:33.74\00:19:37.68 Just look at it he's got it hardly 00:19:37.71\00:19:38.98 so just, hardly come out his hand goes up like that. 00:19:39.01\00:19:43.67 You want to see like inside there? 00:19:43.70\00:19:45.44 They have fire burning inside there 00:19:45.47\00:19:48.16 and it was a kitchen fire. 00:19:48.19\00:19:52.22 We just this past week dedicated 00:21:13.40\00:21:17.02 the first all Katutubo, Katutubo meaning native 00:21:17.05\00:21:21.68 or indigenous person a high school accredited 00:21:21.71\00:21:25.76 by the department of education 00:21:25.79\00:21:28.01 specifically for indigenous tribe 00:21:28.04\00:21:31.65 in the all 7,107 islands of the Philippines. 00:21:31.68\00:21:36.56 So, Laymen Ministries has a first year. 00:21:36.59\00:21:40.07 You have to understand that, 00:21:40.10\00:21:41.38 if some of the children in these villages 00:21:41.41\00:21:44.16 maybe they walked over to the mountain 00:21:44.19\00:21:45.63 to the small town of Paluan 00:21:45.66\00:21:47.06 which is about a five hours hike, 00:21:47.09\00:21:48.89 and they've seen a jeepney or a car or something like that 00:21:48.92\00:21:51.33 but they've never ridden in that car or jeepney. 00:21:51.36\00:21:53.95 They've never really gone a further than that. 00:21:53.98\00:21:55.64 They've seen very little of "western society." 00:21:55.67\00:21:58.19 These people are really primitive people, 00:21:58.22\00:22:01.78 and we hired a professional big air-condition, ac bus 00:22:01.81\00:22:07.52 to come to the town of Paluan 00:22:07.55\00:22:09.43 and all the children from these three villages 00:22:09.46\00:22:11.96 from our schools hiked over the mountains 00:22:11.99\00:22:13.76 with their teachers. 00:22:13.79\00:22:15.41 And you know the older kinds not the little children 00:22:15.44\00:22:17.72 like the kinder for second, third graders 00:22:17.75\00:22:19.78 but the ones that are just about ready to graduate 00:22:19.81\00:22:21.68 and be in high school, next year didn't want to go. 00:22:21.71\00:22:24.21 You know why? 00:22:24.24\00:22:25.40 Because they were afraid of what the Tagalog, 00:22:25.43\00:22:28.21 what the Filipino majority people would say 00:22:28.24\00:22:30.84 oh, look at here comes the Mangyans, 00:22:30.87\00:22:32.72 here come the Mangyans. 00:22:32.75\00:22:34.46 Hence, they didn't want to go 00:22:34.49\00:22:35.53 because they were afraid of being made fun off, 00:22:35.56\00:22:37.91 but they went any how. 00:22:37.94\00:22:39.21 The kids were coming down into the little town of Paluan, 00:22:39.24\00:22:42.45 there was a Tagalog man there in 00:22:42.48\00:22:43.94 and sure enough to kids were thinking, 00:22:43.97\00:22:45.64 couple of the older kids are thinking, 00:22:45.67\00:22:46.71 oh, this guy is gonna make fun of us 00:22:46.74\00:22:48.24 and this guy, this Tagalog Filipino man 00:22:48.27\00:22:51.52 walked up to the one boy and he said, 00:22:51.55\00:22:54.30 oh, you are going to that-- that school, 00:22:54.33\00:22:56.33 that special high school for the Katutubo's 00:22:56.36\00:22:58.62 where they're having a dedication there? 00:22:58.65\00:23:00.94 Wow, you have a chance for opportunity of a lifetime, 00:23:00.97\00:23:05.06 you should go there and do that best you can 00:23:05.09\00:23:07.02 and they were surprised to see 00:23:07.05\00:23:08.76 you know not negative response 00:23:08.79\00:23:10.76 but positive response. 00:23:10.79\00:23:12.42 That's why we're giving them a first class education, 00:23:12.45\00:23:16.89 we're grounding them firmly in their spiritually life. 00:23:16.92\00:23:21.83 And we are preparing them to be able to attend 00:23:21.86\00:23:25.73 any college here in the Philippines, 00:23:25.76\00:23:28.70 because when they finish college 00:23:28.73\00:23:31.96 as a pastor, as a teacher, as a nurse 00:23:31.99\00:23:35.39 whatever they will be coming back 00:23:35.42\00:23:38.38 and ministering directly to their own people. 00:23:38.41\00:23:42.25 And then there were some people of course, 00:23:42.28\00:23:44.31 you know looking at this large group 00:23:44.34\00:23:46.26 of Katutubo children walking down the street 00:23:46.29\00:23:49.75 and they're like talking you know 00:23:49.78\00:23:51.40 and laughing a little bit 00:23:51.43\00:23:52.71 and the kids were noticing that. 00:23:52.74\00:23:54.73 And then this big bus pulls up 00:23:54.76\00:23:56.90 this big huge air conditioned bus 00:23:56.93\00:23:59.88 that even some of the Filipinos 00:23:59.91\00:24:02.00 don't even ride out here in these island here, 00:24:02.03\00:24:03.73 these remote island places 00:24:03.76\00:24:05.59 and all of this Mangyan children, 00:24:05.62\00:24:08.30 this Katutubo children got on this large ac bus 00:24:08.33\00:24:12.40 and their laughing stopped. 00:24:12.43\00:24:14.66 Then they rived up on the property, 00:24:14.69\00:24:17.03 this is kind of almost parochial in essence 00:24:17.06\00:24:19.96 because these people considered mountain people. 00:24:19.99\00:24:22.91 Most of the Katatubo's, 00:24:22.94\00:24:24.54 while they have little houses like this 00:24:24.57\00:24:26.28 maybe down by this seashore 00:24:26.31\00:24:27.92 majority of the time they're way up 00:24:27.95\00:24:29.65 in the mountains hiding under the tree, 00:24:29.68\00:24:31.17 sleeping in the trees, sleeping under some branches 00:24:31.20\00:24:33.26 and brush and nomadic tribal people. 00:24:33.29\00:24:36.70 And the new academy that we built there 00:24:36.73\00:24:39.88 is on top of the mountain, with the wonderful view 00:24:39.91\00:24:43.12 of the South China Sea on one side 00:24:43.15\00:24:45.92 and the mountains all around 00:24:45.95\00:24:47.06 and so here is a place, its kind of most like 00:24:47.09\00:24:49.46 a heaven on earth for this Katutubo. 00:24:49.49\00:24:52.01 And they got out of the bus, 00:24:52.04\00:24:53.75 and they've just standing there a lot of them 00:24:53.78\00:24:55.40 you know, they're excited to see each other and be there 00:24:55.43\00:24:57.40 but then they just started looking around 00:24:57.43\00:24:59.05 and this morning in church 00:24:59.08\00:25:01.85 some of the students that went there, 00:25:01.88\00:25:06.04 started giving their testimonies about being there. 00:25:06.07\00:25:08.20 And one boy said, oh, the new buildings for us. 00:25:08.23\00:25:12.24 This buildings are not for Tito Jim and Moni or 00:25:12.27\00:25:15.54 its not for Laymen Ministries, those buildings are for us. 00:25:15.57\00:25:18.87 And those buildings are made from mirrors. 00:25:18.90\00:25:21.21 The doors are mirrors, and one boy said 00:25:21.24\00:25:23.82 and the lights, the lights are in the ceiling. 00:25:23.85\00:25:26.74 And when I looked down 00:25:26.77\00:25:27.80 I could see myself like a mirror in the floor. 00:25:27.83\00:25:31.50 I never even thought about anything like that. 00:25:31.53\00:25:33.45 It's just, for them leaving these kind of conditions here 00:25:33.48\00:25:37.07 and then going to a place like that with the tile floors 00:25:37.10\00:25:39.75 and the white walls and solar reflectors 00:25:39.78\00:25:42.47 you know, bringing lighting into the buildings 00:25:42.50\00:25:44.18 and electric lights 00:25:44.21\00:25:45.43 and it was little bit of culture shock 00:25:45.46\00:25:48.85 but what was unique was the fact that they realize 00:25:48.88\00:25:52.79 and we emphasize this while they were there 00:25:52.82\00:25:55.02 that is dedicated for them 00:25:55.05\00:25:58.06 and for their future and for their future education. 00:25:58.09\00:26:02.55 We had a dedication here on the mountain 00:26:02.58\00:26:05.06 with politicians, with our students, 00:26:05.09\00:26:09.55 with members of the Adventist church 00:26:09.58\00:26:12.15 and representatives from there, 00:26:12.18\00:26:14.70 and when Jim and I discussed about a program 00:26:14.73\00:26:18.15 we saw what will we do. 00:26:18.18\00:26:20.27 Usually you dedicate or inaugurate a building 00:26:20.30\00:26:24.00 but we said it's not about any building, 00:26:24.03\00:26:26.07 any construction we have here it's about people. 00:26:26.10\00:26:29.59 And so we tried to shift the focus from the building 00:26:29.62\00:26:34.01 to the people, dedicate people. 00:26:34.04\00:26:36.72 And while we had the program here 00:26:36.75\00:26:39.37 it really was a spiritual program 00:26:39.40\00:26:41.73 and I was impressed also how the governor 00:26:41.76\00:26:44.86 and the congress woman, they felt the spiritual atmosphere. 00:26:44.89\00:26:48.86 They even cried there in first row 00:26:48.89\00:26:51.49 and in the speech the congress lady gave 00:26:51.52\00:26:53.97 she also expressed it. 00:26:54.00\00:26:56.25 And that a lifted-- that uplifted my soul 00:26:56.28\00:27:01.25 and made me so happy to see it 00:27:01.28\00:27:04.61 that our mission work 00:27:04.64\00:27:05.89 is not only the education of our young people 00:27:05.92\00:27:09.28 but always to focus them on God 00:27:09.31\00:27:12.51 and even in a event like a dedication 00:27:12.54\00:27:15.49 of a building of the high school 00:27:15.52\00:27:17.87 to focus on God and to uplift Him. 00:27:17.90\00:27:22.49 And it's our goal that this school 00:27:22.52\00:27:24.56 will become a lighthouse, a beacon on a hill, 00:27:24.59\00:27:28.46 a bright light amongst the Katutubo people 00:27:28.49\00:27:31.86 that they too can come back 00:27:31.89\00:27:33.62 and work among their own people group. 00:27:33.65\00:27:35.44 That they can be nurses, doctors, 00:27:35.47\00:27:37.73 that they can be missionaries and Bible workers, pastors 00:27:37.76\00:27:40.92 and come back and work among their own people. 00:27:40.95\00:27:44.25
