[speaking in foreign language] 00:00:50.10\00:00:56.73 Heaven, what good for a place. 00:00:56.76\00:00:59.23 I have a lot of rewarding moments 00:00:59.26\00:01:00.92 with the children in the school. 00:01:00.95\00:01:03.20 Almost daily, actually just seeing them learning 00:01:03.23\00:01:07.59 and appreciating and seeing lights turning on, 00:01:07.62\00:01:11.27 you know in their minds as they learn new things 00:01:11.30\00:01:13.19 that's really rewarding. 00:01:13.22\00:01:15.33 Working with the teachers and doing some teacher training 00:01:15.36\00:01:18.90 and encouraging the teachers and seeing them grow in the-- 00:01:18.93\00:01:23.73 not just in, in their methods of teaching 00:01:23.76\00:01:26.25 but in their spiritual experience too. 00:01:26.28\00:01:28.00 That's been really rewarding. 00:01:28.03\00:01:29.81 [speaking in foreign language] 00:01:29.84\00:01:30.95 One thing we found with medical ministry 00:01:30.98\00:01:33.18 it really is what-- 00:01:33.21\00:01:35.53 what the Lord made it and that is, its Christ method. 00:01:35.56\00:01:39.65 And Jesus mingled with people as one desire to be good. 00:01:43.12\00:01:46.85 He sympathized with them, he ministered to their needs, 00:01:46.88\00:01:49.23 he won their confidence and then He said follow me 00:01:49.26\00:01:52.44 and weaving medical ministry into this project 00:01:52.47\00:01:56.53 is helping us to reach people 00:01:56.56\00:02:00.73 and helping us to make friends and bond with people in a way 00:02:00.76\00:02:05.32 that would not be possible in any other way. 00:02:05.35\00:02:08.74 We're on location here in the country of Vanuatu, 00:02:08.77\00:02:11.01 way up on northern part of the country 00:02:11.04\00:02:13.47 on a volcanic island called Gaua. 00:02:13.50\00:02:15.51 I'm just sitting here visiting with Doctor Turnbull 00:02:15.54\00:02:17.43 his wife Naomi 00:02:17.46\00:02:18.94 and we're reminiscing a little bit about 00:02:18.97\00:02:20.59 some of the pasts and how we 00:02:20.62\00:02:22.21 all ended up here in this island. 00:02:22.24\00:02:24.41 And it's just-- 00:02:24.44\00:02:26.44 it's an amazing story what happened 00:02:26.47\00:02:28.03 and how you folks ended up getting here. 00:02:28.06\00:02:29.98 And looking back over the past Mark, 00:02:30.01\00:02:33.38 how in the world did you get involved with mission work? 00:02:33.41\00:02:36.37 We have the privilege of being involved 00:02:36.40\00:02:37.74 with several projects to the Philippines 00:02:37.77\00:02:40.53 that were short term projects 00:02:40.56\00:02:42.17 and developed a desire to get involved 00:02:42.20\00:02:44.19 in a long-term project. 00:02:44.22\00:02:45.42 That's when we met up with you at ASI sometime ago. 00:02:45.45\00:02:48.35 Were you as a family core group 00:02:48.38\00:02:51.11 all unified and like wow, we would like to do this 00:02:51.14\00:02:53.28 more serious long-term? 00:02:53.31\00:02:54.82 Yes. Yes. 00:02:54.85\00:02:55.88 All of us have had the same feeling, yeah. 00:02:55.91\00:02:57.81 And so what was it that inspired you 00:02:57.84\00:02:59.97 to want to try to contact me 00:03:00.00\00:03:01.48 and move forward with trying to do 00:03:01.51\00:03:03.02 some kind of more long-term project? 00:03:03.05\00:03:04.88 Well, we met up with Jim and Moni, 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.00 we were looking at different ways 00:03:07.03\00:03:08.14 of working in a long-term project. 00:03:08.17\00:03:10.37 We met up with Jim and Moni in the Philippines, 00:03:10.40\00:03:12.15 the Laymen Ministries project 00:03:12.18\00:03:13.99 and discovered what they were doing 00:03:14.02\00:03:15.59 and we felt that that was a pretty good 00:03:15.62\00:03:17.55 way of doing mission project. 00:03:17.58\00:03:21.78 So we wanted to contact you 00:03:21.81\00:03:23.73 and find out whether we could do 00:03:23.76\00:03:24.92 something similar in Vanuatu. 00:03:24.95\00:03:26.53 You contacted me again ASI the next year 00:03:26.56\00:03:29.38 and then we started talking about more seriously, 00:03:29.41\00:03:31.99 we started praying and then from there on 00:03:32.02\00:03:33.71 things just started to take off like crazy. 00:03:33.74\00:03:36.40 And so you two of you were praying 00:03:36.43\00:03:38.03 and you were asking for the Lord's guidance 00:03:38.06\00:03:39.96 and how did you end up coming to Vanuatu? 00:03:39.99\00:03:43.18 Well, my first visit to Vanuatu was in connection 00:03:43.21\00:03:47.49 with another short term project with Pacific Yacht Ministries 00:03:47.52\00:03:50.60 more or less to check out this area 00:03:50.63\00:03:53.30 and the feasibility of being involved in a long-term project. 00:03:53.33\00:03:56.93 And so that's what I did, 00:03:56.96\00:03:58.16 we came here we actually worked on Gaua 00:03:58.19\00:04:02.30 and also up in the Torres Islands 00:04:02.33\00:04:04.53 and from that starting point 00:04:04.56\00:04:08.83 we decided to go ahead and launch 00:04:08.86\00:04:10.92 with the Laymen Ministries, long-term project. 00:04:10.95\00:04:13.64 And you stopped at Port Vila and while you were in Port Vila 00:04:13.67\00:04:15.86 what kind of things happened there? 00:04:15.89\00:04:17.79 We met up with the mission representatives 00:04:17.82\00:04:20.37 from the Vanuatu SDA Mission 00:04:20.40\00:04:23.43 and teamed up with them so that we could work in 00:04:23.46\00:04:27.50 close partnership with the mission. 00:04:27.53\00:04:29.47 Were they excited about mission project 00:04:29.50\00:04:31.48 coming into the country and-- 00:04:31.51\00:04:32.78 Very positive because this is a very difficult area, 00:04:32.81\00:04:35.88 this is very remote and it's a very needy area 00:04:35.91\00:04:40.05 and we call it the last frontier of Vanuatu 00:04:40.08\00:04:43.20 and Gaua is actually like the gateway 00:04:43.23\00:04:45.13 to the north of this area. 00:04:45.16\00:04:47.15 And so working in connection with the Adventist Mission 00:04:47.18\00:04:50.81 we are-- we feel like 00:04:50.84\00:04:52.54 we are at least assisting the Adventist Mission 00:04:52.57\00:04:56.24 in their mission to take the three angels messages 00:04:56.27\00:05:01.14 to this unreached people group. 00:05:01.17\00:05:02.53 Amen. 00:05:02.56\00:05:03.59 I remember it was week and a half 00:05:03.62\00:05:04.73 after you folks arrived I came over the first time 00:05:04.76\00:05:07.38 and that's when we shot the first television program 00:05:07.41\00:05:09.36 the DVD called Vanuatu, 00:05:09.39\00:05:12.34 Ring of Fire and for our viewers 00:05:12.37\00:05:14.03 who haven't seen that particular broadcast or that DVD 00:05:14.06\00:05:17.16 write or call our office at the number 00:05:17.19\00:05:19.02 shown at the end of this presentation 00:05:19.05\00:05:21.09 and get that because that lays the groundwork for you about 00:05:21.12\00:05:23.87 the challenges that you folks face 00:05:23.90\00:05:25.25 when you first came here, moving to the jungle in Gaua, 00:05:25.28\00:05:28.28 the foot of a volcano 00:05:28.31\00:05:29.70 and it gets a lot of historical information about the Island. 00:05:29.73\00:05:32.49 But at that point Naomi, you started realizing that 00:05:32.52\00:05:37.26 there was a small little church here 00:05:37.29\00:05:39.34 and both of you were praying about it 00:05:39.37\00:05:41.59 and you decided something had to be done to kind of help, 00:05:41.62\00:05:44.87 I mean we're missionaries 00:05:44.90\00:05:45.93 we're here for the sake of Christ, 00:05:45.96\00:05:47.33 the three angels messages 00:05:47.36\00:05:48.51 to build the church, what happened with that? 00:05:48.54\00:05:50.72 Yes. 00:05:50.75\00:05:52.02 We used to walk all the way from our little bungalow 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.96 where we were staying which was about a one 00:05:54.99\00:05:56.65 and a half hour walk down to the local church 00:05:56.68\00:05:58.84 and worship with them every Sabbath. 00:05:58.87\00:06:01.52 And we could see they had a great need 00:06:01.55\00:06:03.45 because interest was growing the membership was growing 00:06:03.48\00:06:06.96 but the building was very inadequate, 00:06:06.99\00:06:08.76 very small and on a hot day 00:06:08.79\00:06:10.51 we were really hot in there under that iron roof. 00:06:10.54\00:06:13.46 I remember the first Sabbath I spent with you, 00:06:13.49\00:06:15.20 we were crowded outside and around the windows 00:06:15.23\00:06:17.32 on the outside and yeah. 00:06:17.35\00:06:18.96 Yeah, it was just really, really inadequate in many ways. 00:06:18.99\00:06:21.73 And so we noticed that they had another piece of land 00:06:21.76\00:06:24.91 they had started clearing and a few homemade bricks ready 00:06:24.94\00:06:28.22 and we said so what's the goal here? 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.73 And they said, they were planning to 00:06:30.76\00:06:32.54 start a new church building project. 00:06:32.57\00:06:34.37 And we prayed about it 00:06:34.40\00:06:35.88 and as a church we all work together 00:06:35.91\00:06:38.64 and we shared, you know, needs in Australia 00:06:38.67\00:06:42.20 and money came in 00:06:42.23\00:06:43.87 and now there's a nice church building there. 00:06:43.90\00:06:46.89 And so one of the first things that happened 00:06:46.92\00:06:48.81 and it's the church got established here 00:06:48.84\00:06:50.44 and that started growing. 00:06:50.47\00:06:52.24 And then, you folks, you said you saw Jim and Moni's work 00:06:52.27\00:06:57.05 with our ministry in the Philippines 00:06:57.08\00:06:58.43 and their primary focus is education. 00:06:58.46\00:07:01.14 So what was the next step that happened, 00:07:01.17\00:07:03.77 it's almost logical that happened 00:07:03.80\00:07:04.93 after the church was built. 00:07:04.96\00:07:07.44 As we were helping with just raising funds 00:07:07.47\00:07:11.00 and making awareness of the needs here, 00:07:11.03\00:07:14.56 another thing that was happening at this time was 00:07:14.59\00:07:16.79 my daughter Kay and myself 00:07:16.82\00:07:17.95 were working a lot with the children, 00:07:17.98\00:07:19.21 running Sabbath schools. 00:07:19.24\00:07:20.76 We could just see it these children are really keen, 00:07:20.79\00:07:23.47 really eager to learn 00:07:23.50\00:07:24.53 but have limited opportunities 00:07:24.56\00:07:26.43 to learn Bible stories and things. 00:07:26.46\00:07:28.01 So we-- we put a lot of emphasis 00:07:28.04\00:07:29.89 during those first two years into Sabbath school 00:07:29.92\00:07:32.09 and Sabbath afternoon programs for children. 00:07:32.12\00:07:35.61 But I could say that, that wasn't enough, 00:07:35.64\00:07:37.64 we really needed a day school 00:07:37.67\00:07:39.25 where they could come every day of the week 00:07:39.28\00:07:40.55 and learn all these things. 00:07:40.58\00:07:42.50 So I was like, it naturally came out of the Sabbath school 00:07:42.53\00:07:45.37 to head towards needing a school. 00:07:45.40\00:07:48.33 We noticed that if this church is really going to grow 00:07:48.36\00:07:52.11 and have future leaders, we have to train the children, 00:07:52.14\00:07:54.92 the young people and the small children have to get trained 00:07:54.95\00:07:58.01 so that they will become the leaders for the future. 00:07:58.04\00:08:00.22 Jeff, there is a great need for leadership in this province. 00:08:00.25\00:08:03.36 Particularly, in a young church, a young growing church 00:08:03.39\00:08:07.74 we're talking about a whole province of islands here 00:08:07.77\00:08:09.79 that has got a desperate need for leaders, teachers, nurses, 00:08:09.82\00:08:16.07 people who can lead the future. 00:08:16.10\00:08:18.09 And so this school we're hoping by God's grace 00:08:18.12\00:08:21.04 will produce those leaders and those teachers. 00:08:21.07\00:08:23.02 So the whole concept of having a school here 00:08:23.05\00:08:25.16 is for moral and spiritual development 00:08:25.19\00:08:28.60 and create leaders to be able to not only work on Gaua 00:08:28.63\00:08:31.02 but to go into this last frontier 00:08:31.05\00:08:32.50 that we've, we've talked about 00:08:32.53\00:08:33.88 as part of this project is targeting, 00:08:33.91\00:08:35.71 it's far northern reach or this last frontier 00:08:35.74\00:08:37.98 Vanuatu which was the bank, Torres Island group. 00:08:38.01\00:08:42.37 And that's where you started talking to me about airplane 00:08:42.40\00:08:44.71 saying, Jeff, you know, the infrastructure 00:08:44.74\00:08:46.21 in this country is almost like non-existent, 00:08:46.24\00:08:48.02 you know, you can go to the Philippines 00:08:48.05\00:08:49.08 there's ferries and airplanes and boats. 00:08:49.11\00:08:51.92 You can look out on the oceans here 00:08:51.95\00:08:53.23 and days can go by, you don't see a single boat go by. 00:08:53.26\00:08:56.35 And trying to get from one island 00:08:56.38\00:08:57.93 to the other is very difficult, 00:08:57.96\00:08:59.08 they have airplanes but they're extremely expensive. 00:08:59.11\00:09:02.28 And so the whole concept of aviation, 00:09:02.31\00:09:05.03 medical aviation came in. 00:09:05.06\00:09:08.01 For our viewers that haven't 00:09:08.04\00:09:09.07 seen the story called Flying High in Vanuatu, 00:09:09.10\00:09:11.56 it's all about the airplane that was donated. 00:09:11.59\00:09:13.75 And you want to get that it's kind of like a sequel 00:09:13.78\00:09:16.47 to this interview in our newest mission videos 00:09:16.50\00:09:18.54 it's gonna be coming up shortly 00:09:18.57\00:09:19.99 based on this trip that were here. 00:09:20.02\00:09:21.39 We have a lot of things happening exciting 00:09:21.42\00:09:23.07 but Doctor Mark, as they call you here in Vanuatu 00:09:23.10\00:09:27.65 what happened once the airplane arrived here? 00:09:27.68\00:09:29.75 What kind of doors did you start to see opening 00:09:29.78\00:09:31.81 and how God started blessing by using this medical aviation? 00:09:31.84\00:09:35.10 The aircraft has totally changed 00:09:35.13\00:09:36.99 the way we are able to operate in this place. 00:09:37.02\00:09:39.42 It has very high profile. 00:09:39.45\00:09:41.67 What do you mean high-profile? 00:09:41.70\00:09:42.73 Are you talking about the wings on the plane or-- 00:09:42.76\00:09:46.01 We're talking about publicity to the ultimate extent. 00:09:46.04\00:09:49.85 Everybody in this whole province 00:09:49.88\00:09:51.85 knows about this small orange aircraft. 00:09:51.88\00:09:55.23 And this plane is being used 00:09:55.26\00:09:58.63 to help with emergency evacuations or to help. 00:09:58.66\00:10:02.52 What--what is emergency evacuation, I mean? 00:10:02.55\00:10:05.92 Okay, we're talking about all kinds of things 00:10:05.95\00:10:08.01 people with cerebral malaria that need to you know, 00:10:08.04\00:10:11.03 stabilization in Santo or people who need operations. 00:10:11.06\00:10:17.26 The problem here we just don't have 00:10:17.29\00:10:18.94 the facilities to take care of people, 00:10:18.97\00:10:21.65 we don't have enough nursing staff. 00:10:21.68\00:10:23.96 There are some nurses in these government clinics around here 00:10:23.99\00:10:26.39 but they very separated from each other 00:10:26.42\00:10:29.36 and it's hard to get sufficient staff 00:10:29.39\00:10:31.23 in one place to do something. 00:10:31.26\00:10:32.65 There is a small hospital being built in Solomon, 00:10:32.68\00:10:35.49 it's taking a long time to get going. 00:10:35.52\00:10:37.56 And even in Santo the hospital 00:10:37.59\00:10:39.11 is sometimes not the most desirable place 00:10:39.14\00:10:43.04 but better than being here I guess. 00:10:43.07\00:10:44.71 It's been a couple cases 00:10:44.74\00:10:45.83 that have been not very good in a result 00:10:45.86\00:10:49.56 from taking them to Santo but 00:10:49.59\00:10:51.54 we just have to do what the best, 00:10:51.57\00:10:53.44 do the best with what we have. 00:10:53.47\00:10:55.96 And some cases we have to operate here in-- 00:10:55.99\00:11:00.47 That's what I was kind of trying to understand, 00:11:00.50\00:11:02.01 so what is exactly that you do here versus 00:11:02.04\00:11:04.61 what you would do with that medical evacuation 00:11:04.64\00:11:06.60 with the plane to go to the small little hospital 00:11:06.63\00:11:08.49 clinic up in Santo. Okay. 00:11:08.52\00:11:10.51 Most of the cases we're dealing with here, 00:11:10.54\00:11:12.19 I pull teeth, I look at skin infections, 00:11:12.22\00:11:14.96 I see a lot of those all boils and yeah, there's a lot of-- 00:11:14.99\00:11:20.00 there's a lot of small cases here, malaria. 00:11:20.03\00:11:22.55 Excuse me, malaria is taking, 00:11:22.58\00:11:24.77 is very wide spread around here. 00:11:24.80\00:11:26.38 So most of the-- most of the case 00:11:26.41\00:11:29.52 we can handle quite well 00:11:29.55\00:11:32.62 but these big cases we need to take them to Santo. 00:11:32.65\00:11:37.40 And has ever been times 00:11:37.43\00:11:38.46 that you've been here with the big case 00:11:38.49\00:11:40.06 and you just got stuck and-- 00:11:40.09\00:11:42.22 Yeah, well, we've had a couple of cases here 00:11:42.25\00:11:45.10 where I felt that I could handle, 00:11:45.13\00:11:46.44 I do some general anesthesia using ketamine 00:11:46.47\00:11:49.09 which is a general anesthetic for emergency 00:11:49.12\00:11:52.40 or battlefield type of situations and so. 00:11:52.43\00:11:55.54 I had to deal with a laparotomy case here an ectopic, 00:11:55.57\00:11:58.88 lady with an ectopic pregnancy 00:11:58.91\00:12:00.34 who we couldn't take out due to poor weather conditions, 00:12:00.37\00:12:04.11 dangerous flying conditions. 00:12:04.14\00:12:06.25 And so we had to perform the first laparotomy 00:12:06.28\00:12:09.16 that's probably ever been done up in Torba Province. 00:12:09.19\00:12:11.16 That's a pretty major surgery, I mean that's actually like-- 00:12:11.19\00:12:13.73 That's-- Cutting a person open 00:12:13.76\00:12:15.07 and sewing them up inside 00:12:15.10\00:12:16.18 and you did that in the old building where-- 00:12:16.21\00:12:19.09 We did that in a napton gold leaf hut with flies-- 00:12:19.12\00:12:22.25 What kind of leaf is that? Okay. 00:12:22.28\00:12:24.39 That's just a palm leaf hut. 00:12:24.42\00:12:26.78 And with bamboo walling, we had-- 00:12:26.81\00:12:29.65 It's kind of like a place where you would, 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.02 you put your cow or your chickens, 00:12:31.05\00:12:32.64 this is the way I would describe it. 00:12:32.67\00:12:34.90 It's a pretty primitive building 00:12:34.93\00:12:36.15 and we are--we were able to go ahead and do this. 00:12:36.18\00:12:39.28 Fortunately we had sufficient drapes to do 00:12:39.31\00:12:41.95 a semi sterile operation. 00:12:41.98\00:12:44.52 And we didn't have sufficient lighting 00:12:44.55\00:12:47.84 but I have a headlamp which I use for everything here. 00:12:47.87\00:12:51.11 And that was sufficient for the operation. 00:12:51.14\00:12:53.22 We had surgical tools to do the-- 00:12:53.25\00:12:56.37 to do the job but now-- 00:12:56.40\00:12:57.69 I have a lot of friends that are doctors 00:12:57.72\00:12:59.22 and I've seen OR before 00:12:59.25\00:13:00.95 and I know that they've got the, 00:13:00.98\00:13:02.54 you know, respiratory therapist they're the-- 00:13:02.57\00:13:04.74 the anesthesia assistant you know, 00:13:04.77\00:13:07.59 the anesthesiologist they have all this cruel people. 00:13:07.62\00:13:09.98 Yeah. 00:13:10.01\00:13:11.04 So if you didn't have any that equipment hardly at all 00:13:11.07\00:13:13.08 and you didn't have that crew, 00:13:13.11\00:13:14.14 what kind of crew did you have then? 00:13:14.17\00:13:15.37 Well, we had Kay was the scrub nurse, 00:13:15.40\00:13:18.07 Naomi was helping with passing instruments 00:13:18.10\00:13:21.26 and getting different things during operation 00:13:21.29\00:13:24.05 we had the sister-in-law of the patient 00:13:24.08\00:13:26.99 was also taken care of for her IV line. 00:13:27.02\00:13:30.64 And we had a nurse who was looking after the airway. 00:13:30.67\00:13:33.31 The nurses not trained for OR 00:13:33.34\00:13:35.97 but he stepped in and helped out. 00:13:36.00\00:13:39.00 And what happened with the young lady? 00:13:39.03\00:13:42.12 There was no--there was no difficulty with the operation. 00:13:42.15\00:13:45.06 Everything went smoothly 00:13:45.09\00:13:46.33 and by God's grace we were able to deal with that 00:13:46.36\00:13:51.13 very severe internal hemorrhage, 00:13:51.16\00:13:53.78 she was--she was in shock, very low blood pressure 00:13:53.81\00:13:58.95 and had very high pulse, low saturation. 00:13:58.98\00:14:02.34 She was basically dying 00:14:02.37\00:14:03.51 which is why we had to operate right at that time 00:14:03.54\00:14:05.22 but as soon as we found the hemorrhage 00:14:05.25\00:14:08.85 and closed up that hemorrhage. 00:14:08.88\00:14:12.80 She stabilized or more or less immediately 00:14:12.83\00:14:15.09 and without any complications she recovered fully. 00:14:15.12\00:14:17.74 Well, praise God. That's amazing. 00:14:17.77\00:14:18.80 Praise be to God. 00:14:18.83\00:14:20.85 I imagine, you know, they have here in these jungles 00:14:20.88\00:14:23.83 and these remote islands even though 00:14:23.86\00:14:25.01 that they spread out large distances from each other, 00:14:25.04\00:14:27.83 they have what is called the coconut communication wine 00:14:27.86\00:14:31.85 or something like that. 00:14:31.88\00:14:32.91 So when that surgery took place here, 00:14:32.94\00:14:34.59 how-- Naomi, what happened I mean, 00:14:34.62\00:14:36.31 right after the surgery were people talking about it? 00:14:36.34\00:14:38.23 Surely. 00:14:38.26\00:14:39.29 They weren't talking about it for days on end 00:14:39.32\00:14:41.23 and it spread all around these local islands 00:14:41.26\00:14:44.44 and as far Santo and even Port Vila 00:14:44.47\00:14:47.07 we heard reports coming back that they'd heard about 00:14:47.10\00:14:49.61 what happened up here. 00:14:49.64\00:14:51.38 And one thing that was really encouraging 00:14:51.41\00:14:53.10 during that experience we were all a little stressed 00:14:53.13\00:14:55.64 at the time due of the facilities 00:14:55.67\00:14:58.63 we had to work under and the conditions 00:14:58.66\00:15:00.36 which were the-- anything less than normal with 00:15:00.39\00:15:04.30 you know, dust falling down and poor light 00:15:04.33\00:15:06.38 and its pouring rain outside and you know, we're running in 00:15:06.41\00:15:10.20 and out of this little building with mud on our feet 00:15:10.23\00:15:12.35 and you know it was just really-- 00:15:12.38\00:15:13.82 Less than sterile conditions. Really crazy situation. 00:15:13.85\00:15:17.12 But each time I had to go outside 00:15:17.15\00:15:18.94 and get a bucket of water 00:15:18.97\00:15:20.10 or something like that I was going out 00:15:20.13\00:15:21.58 and I was seeing groups of people praying, 00:15:21.61\00:15:23.58 the family of this lady, they were 00:15:23.61\00:15:25.38 all around the building, they're praying. 00:15:25.41\00:15:27.12 And that that really gave me courage, 00:15:27.15\00:15:29.01 I knew well, God's on our side anyway. 00:15:29.04\00:15:31.29 Jeff, well, one thing we found with medical ministry, 00:15:31.32\00:15:34.23 it really is what-- what the Lord made it 00:15:34.26\00:15:38.30 and that is its Christ method. 00:15:38.33\00:15:40.94 As we see in the life of Jesus 00:15:40.97\00:15:44.31 that He sympathized with people, 00:15:44.34\00:15:48.08 He mingled with people, He sympathized with them, 00:15:48.11\00:15:50.06 He ministered to their needs, He won their confidence 00:15:50.09\00:15:53.22 and then He bid them to follow Him. 00:15:53.25\00:15:55.69 And so medical ministry is just that it's-- 00:15:55.72\00:15:58.03 it's a wonderful opportunity to get close to people. 00:15:58.06\00:16:02.98 And through getting close to them, 00:16:03.01\00:16:05.33 you have the opportunity to pray with them 00:16:05.36\00:16:07.86 and to let them know that you really care about the-- 00:16:07.89\00:16:10.95 their real, the situation. 00:16:10.98\00:16:13.51 Bond with them in a way that you can never bond with them 00:16:13.54\00:16:16.31 in any other situation. 00:16:16.34\00:16:19.71 And so they will open up their hearts 00:16:19.74\00:16:22.64 and share with you things that they would never 00:16:22.67\00:16:25.10 share with you in another situation. 00:16:25.13\00:16:27.43 And some time-- for example, 00:16:27.46\00:16:28.77 we got people on this island that are named after us. 00:16:28.80\00:16:31.14 People have named their children after us. 00:16:31.17\00:16:34.33 We visited people when they're close to dying, 00:16:34.36\00:16:36.88 the family never forget that 00:16:36.91\00:16:38.66 and so it's just a wonderful way for us to bond with people 00:16:38.69\00:16:43.17 who may not have bonded with us in any other situation. 00:16:43.20\00:16:48.43 That's what it's all about. 00:16:48.46\00:16:49.59 The right arm of the message to the inner ring wedge 00:16:49.62\00:16:52.07 that some people refer to it as win people's hearts. 00:16:52.10\00:16:54.42 It seems like once you've touched 00:16:54.45\00:16:55.67 a person's life in helping them in any kind of sickness, 00:16:55.70\00:16:59.39 there's a bond that's created there 00:16:59.42\00:17:01.14 that just never goes away. 00:17:01.17\00:17:02.80 An extra bonus that came out of this 00:17:02.83\00:17:05.04 was the in-laws of the lady 00:17:05.07\00:17:07.19 we operated on have now offered us 00:17:07.22\00:17:09.02 the use of their newly built home for the clinic. 00:17:09.05\00:17:11.83 So now we have almost sterile environment with a-- 00:17:11.86\00:17:15.15 you know, clean floors and walls and good roof 00:17:15.18\00:17:18.78 so we don't have dust problems 00:17:18.81\00:17:20.33 like we had before and it's much more pleasant to work in so. 00:17:20.36\00:17:24.79 You know, we're building a hanger 00:17:24.82\00:17:25.90 right now for the airplane which is really crucial, 00:17:25.93\00:17:27.95 we don't have quite all the funding for 00:17:27.98\00:17:29.40 but the trustees are on their way coming 00:17:29.43\00:17:31.06 and the foundation has been laid. 00:17:31.09\00:17:32.45 Scotty was here from Australia and helped with that. 00:17:32.48\00:17:36.33 And you know, that's gonna be built 00:17:36.36\00:17:38.64 and there's been this controversy amongst 00:17:38.67\00:17:41.02 all three of us here about, 00:17:41.05\00:17:42.44 what to do with the extra space, 00:17:42.47\00:17:43.83 you know, to build the clinic in the hangar 00:17:43.86\00:17:45.70 with the airplane or to have-- you have it be your home 00:17:45.73\00:17:48.62 because you folks don't have a home? 00:17:48.65\00:17:50.12 Place that you're in right now is a temporary place, 00:17:50.15\00:17:52.15 this clinic this lady is allowing us to use is a house 00:17:52.18\00:17:55.22 and in this place here you have to be out in 00:17:55.25\00:17:57.67 another month or so because this is a rented place 00:17:57.70\00:18:00.16 which is really rare to find on this island. 00:18:00.19\00:18:02.48 You know, we need to try to build another building, 00:18:02.51\00:18:05.42 another small humble building 00:18:05.45\00:18:06.78 and we don't have the funding for that 00:18:06.81\00:18:08.13 and I just-- will continue to pray 00:18:08.16\00:18:10.84 because God always met our needs. 00:18:10.87\00:18:12.17 But that's something that we really need to-- 00:18:12.20\00:18:15.53 really, really make a serious consideration 00:18:15.56\00:18:18.06 in prayer to see what's going to happen. 00:18:18.09\00:18:20.40 Yeah. Yeah. 00:18:20.43\00:18:21.49 Yeah, the hanger is gonna be more than hanger 00:18:21.52\00:18:24.21 it's gonna be like a-- an operation center. 00:18:24.24\00:18:27.00 So we're gonna have to have 00:18:27.03\00:18:29.36 facilities in there for office space. 00:18:29.39\00:18:32.87 We need space for storage of donated items, 00:18:32.90\00:18:35.77 for example, Bibles, et cetera. 00:18:35.80\00:18:38.02 We need space for workshop 00:18:38.05\00:18:39.79 working on the aircraft maintenance, on the plane. 00:18:39.82\00:18:42.66 We need space for accommodation 00:18:42.69\00:18:48.00 for people to come although initially 00:18:48.03\00:18:50.34 we will have to use that accommodation ourselves. 00:18:50.37\00:18:53.37 And then eventually 00:18:53.40\00:18:55.20 we're gonna need to build in the back 00:18:55.23\00:18:56.74 some kind of emergency area for to take care of patients 00:18:56.77\00:19:01.90 once that hanger becomes more fully established 00:19:01.93\00:19:05.58 as our operations area. Okay. 00:19:05.61\00:19:07.68 Well, one of the other key things 00:19:07.71\00:19:08.88 about having an airplane here 00:19:08.91\00:19:11.38 is because like you were mentioned earlier 00:19:11.41\00:19:13.04 that this is Gaua is the very southern part of it, 00:19:13.07\00:19:16.61 Torres Banks Island group or the province of Torba 00:19:16.64\00:19:20.57 and you referred to this as the gateway. 00:19:20.60\00:19:23.49 Why did you refer to this as a gateway 00:19:23.52\00:19:26.14 and what's that got to do with having an airplane? 00:19:26.17\00:19:28.27 The Santo is our main base in terms of a town, 00:19:28.30\00:19:32.20 it's the closest town, that's our shopping town, 00:19:32.23\00:19:34.59 that's where we get our mail, 00:19:34.62\00:19:35.98 that's where we get our supplies, 00:19:36.01\00:19:37.72 our fuel for the aircraft and for the boat, et cetera. 00:19:37.75\00:19:41.02 And so for us to work up here in this very remote part, 00:19:41.05\00:19:45.41 one of the most remarked places in the Pacific, 00:19:45.44\00:19:49.58 this northern province of Vanuatu. 00:19:49.61\00:19:52.31 In order to come up here frequently, 00:19:52.34\00:19:55.02 we need to be able to access these islands 00:19:55.05\00:19:57.56 and Gaua is the first island as you're flying up north. 00:19:57.59\00:20:00.71 Gaua has the best airstrip, the best or all weather airstrip 00:20:00.74\00:20:05.29 and it's also best in terms of wind, 00:20:05.32\00:20:08.11 so it's a good airstrip for us to be based at. 00:20:08.14\00:20:11.03 But we are planning to assist 00:20:11.06\00:20:14.46 the work of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:20:14.49\00:20:16.29 and its mission to reach all of these islands. 00:20:16.32\00:20:19.01 And that involves medical ministry 00:20:19.04\00:20:21.83 to these Islands. 00:20:21.86\00:20:23.17 Is that started to happen at all I mean, 00:20:23.20\00:20:24.74 are they're actually places up there 00:20:24.77\00:20:26.46 where you can even land that plane? 00:20:26.49\00:20:27.94 There are airstrips there which, 00:20:27.97\00:20:31.06 in Sola which is Vanua Lava on the next island 00:20:31.09\00:20:33.60 and then we have Mota Lava, and then this one up in Torres. 00:20:33.63\00:20:37.80 But one thing that's really exciting now 00:20:37.83\00:20:39.27 what's happening is we got islands 00:20:39.30\00:20:41.05 who are inviting us to assist them 00:20:41.08\00:20:44.41 in making small airstrips 00:20:44.44\00:20:47.10 that would be adequate for the Maule aircraft 00:20:47.13\00:20:49.66 which is a short type of a landing aircraft. 00:20:49.69\00:20:52.80 And so they're inviting us to assist them in designing 00:20:52.83\00:20:56.02 and putting an airstrips in thick jungle, 00:20:56.05\00:20:59.28 it's a lot of work. 00:20:59.31\00:21:00.67 But they're willing to cut it-- 00:21:00.70\00:21:02.19 get into it and cut it with a bush knives 00:21:02.22\00:21:03.97 and they've cut some really massive-- 00:21:04.00\00:21:05.03 So that's actually starting to happen, 00:21:05.06\00:21:06.44 that some of these bush people 00:21:06.47\00:21:07.72 way back in these remote islands are cutting airstrips. 00:21:07.75\00:21:10.24 They are cutting airstrips-- 00:21:10.27\00:21:11.45 How many do you have going on right now? 00:21:11.48\00:21:13.03 We've got two and we've got-- 00:21:13.06\00:21:14.91 two airstrips that are already in progress. 00:21:14.94\00:21:16.98 But there is a-- there's another, 00:21:17.01\00:21:19.90 there's been four requests in other islands 00:21:19.93\00:21:22.22 as well which we've had to held hold back 00:21:22.25\00:21:24.27 because we don't want to take on two much. 00:21:24.30\00:21:25.46 Why do they want a little orange Maule airplane 00:21:25.49\00:21:27.57 to land in these places? 00:21:27.60\00:21:28.86 Why are they going through all this work to donate the land 00:21:28.89\00:21:30.65 and putting the airstrip in? 00:21:30.68\00:21:31.74 These-- these islands are very remote 00:21:31.77\00:21:34.75 and there's people dying every year 00:21:34.78\00:21:36.39 from emergency situations 00:21:36.42\00:21:39.27 where they are unable to get out 00:21:39.30\00:21:41.25 and get medical help. 00:21:41.28\00:21:42.61 And so these people really see the need 00:21:42.64\00:21:47.20 for medical aviation on their island. 00:21:47.23\00:21:50.70 They would-- they would really appreciate 00:21:50.73\00:21:52.22 if we could fly in and help them with emergencies 00:21:52.25\00:21:54.14 or fly out a sick case. 00:21:54.17\00:21:56.11 And so this is our mission 00:21:56.14\00:21:59.12 and this is what gave us 00:21:59.15\00:22:00.44 this miraculously provided this aircraft for. 00:22:00.47\00:22:04.22 And so we-- we see this as God inviting us 00:22:04.25\00:22:08.32 to go and do this work. 00:22:08.35\00:22:09.94 It's such a blessing to be involved in it. 00:22:09.97\00:22:11.87 Well, while we were here shooting video 00:22:11.90\00:22:14.09 for this next new coming television program 00:22:14.12\00:22:16.08 that we will be making out all the footage 00:22:16.11\00:22:17.58 that we accumulated so far. 00:22:17.61\00:22:19.32 We flew up to an island of-- what is it called? 00:22:19.35\00:22:21.60 The whole-- 00:22:21.63\00:22:22.66 Toga. Toga. 00:22:22.69\00:22:23.80 No, that one island we landed on. 00:22:23.83\00:22:25.00 Loh. Loh. 00:22:25.03\00:22:26.63 It's called Loh, yeah. 00:22:26.66\00:22:28.29 And then we went across the ocean 00:22:28.32\00:22:30.37 on a small little banana boat over to that Island of Toga. 00:22:30.40\00:22:33.63 Toga. Yeah. 00:22:33.66\00:22:34.69 And that's where they're building 00:22:34.72\00:22:35.75 one of these airstrips there. 00:22:35.78\00:22:37.47 And the people are extremely receptive 00:22:37.50\00:22:39.89 and I don't think that our viewers 00:22:39.92\00:22:41.30 have any understanding to know the challenges of this place 00:22:41.33\00:22:45.16 and these are thick jungles. 00:22:45.19\00:22:46.67 You know lot of times when we're walking, 00:22:46.70\00:22:48.23 we walk, we transverse 00:22:48.26\00:22:49.31 the whole distance of that island 00:22:49.34\00:22:50.63 coming back out just to try to get out. 00:22:50.66\00:22:52.54 The Island is like this huge coral reef has been lifted 00:22:52.57\00:22:56.21 right out of the ocean, surrounded by cliffs 00:22:56.24\00:22:57.87 with a few small inlets 00:22:57.90\00:22:59.22 trying to even get a boat to it is very difficult. 00:22:59.25\00:23:01.66 And we transverse that island going back out 00:23:01.69\00:23:03.41 through the jungle with machetes 00:23:03.44\00:23:06.21 and you know, so having an airstrip to get in 00:23:06.24\00:23:08.35 to these places is extremely important. 00:23:08.38\00:23:10.81 And of course like you were sharing earlier, 00:23:10.84\00:23:13.36 it's more than just medical missionary work. 00:23:13.39\00:23:15.02 Yeah. 00:23:15.05\00:23:17.02 We are not here just to look after 00:23:17.05\00:23:20.47 people's physical needs. 00:23:20.50\00:23:21.95 We feel a deep desire to help these people, 00:23:21.98\00:23:26.99 especially to be ready for when Jesus comes. 00:23:27.02\00:23:32.50 And in terms of the young people and the youth, 00:23:32.53\00:23:36.62 we feel a burden to help them 00:23:36.65\00:23:38.21 to develop character leadership qualities 00:23:38.24\00:23:41.33 that will make them leaders for the future 00:23:41.36\00:23:42.94 because we don't want us to-- we don't our project to be-- 00:23:42.97\00:23:48.20 for people to be depending on us. 00:23:48.23\00:23:50.29 We want to generate a movement of young people 00:23:50.32\00:23:56.02 who will answer to the needs of this place and to-- 00:23:56.05\00:23:58.59 who will share the message of Christ 00:23:58.62\00:24:02.11 in every part of these islands. 00:24:02.14\00:24:03.92 There was discussion about student missionaries coming, 00:24:03.95\00:24:06.69 there's a need for the school 00:24:06.72\00:24:07.91 that you've already had some volunteers come 00:24:07.94\00:24:10.14 that have done more the building 00:24:10.17\00:24:11.74 and some teaching. 00:24:11.77\00:24:12.96 Who are some of the people that have come, 00:24:12.99\00:24:14.68 I know that this has been a really 00:24:14.71\00:24:15.98 a multicultural experiment here in Vanuatu 00:24:16.01\00:24:19.38 with people from Australia 00:24:19.41\00:24:20.69 and we've had a people from the States 00:24:20.72\00:24:23.09 and different people all working together 00:24:23.12\00:24:24.48 donating and supplying things 00:24:24.51\00:24:25.92 but who are some of the volunteers 00:24:25.95\00:24:27.36 that have come and what kind of need 00:24:27.39\00:24:28.61 for future volunteers do we have? 00:24:28.64\00:24:30.81 Right. 00:24:30.84\00:24:31.87 In January and February this year, 00:24:31.90\00:24:33.56 we had a group of 15 volunteers from Australia 00:24:33.59\00:24:36.27 that came and help to build the school. 00:24:36.30\00:24:37.68 Fifteen came at once? Yes. 00:24:37.71\00:24:39.26 And there's no hotels on this island. 00:24:39.29\00:24:41.34 They had to bring their own tents 00:24:41.37\00:24:42.63 and it was a camping experience 00:24:42.66\00:24:44.62 which was really hot, that's the hottest time of the year. 00:24:44.65\00:24:46.89 And they got lots of heavy rain, 00:24:46.92\00:24:49.01 lots of mosquitoes, they got sunburn 00:24:49.04\00:24:51.05 but they enjoyed their time. 00:24:51.08\00:24:52.84 What were they doing? 00:24:52.87\00:24:53.90 They were here for three weeks building the school. 00:24:53.93\00:24:55.79 So after the three weeks the building was up 00:24:55.82\00:24:58.48 and the school started functioning. 00:24:58.51\00:25:00.38 Praise God. It's a wonderful building too. 00:25:00.41\00:25:02.09 Who are some of the other people that have come and helped? 00:25:02.12\00:25:04.45 Some of those same people came back again 00:25:04.48\00:25:06.41 in July and August, one couple Scott and Kathy. 00:25:06.44\00:25:10.18 And another couple joined them Wayne and Emma. 00:25:10.21\00:25:12.34 They came and they help finish 00:25:12.37\00:25:13.56 the interior of the school building 00:25:13.59\00:25:15.04 because we didn't have doors and windows, 00:25:15.07\00:25:16.51 it wasn't lockable. 00:25:16.54\00:25:18.00 And then they also build a teacher's house. 00:25:18.03\00:25:20.03 So that now our teacher and his family 00:25:20.06\00:25:22.27 have accommodation down at the school. 00:25:22.30\00:25:24.60 And then we had some more volunteers 00:25:24.63\00:25:26.51 come back again in October and November. 00:25:26.54\00:25:29.28 We've had three more volunteers 00:25:29.31\00:25:30.90 which were part of that original group in January 00:25:30.93\00:25:32.99 that came back again to help lay the foundations 00:25:33.02\00:25:35.40 for the hanger. 00:25:35.43\00:25:36.92 So, yeah, over the year 00:25:36.95\00:25:38.39 we've had a lot of volunteers coming and going. 00:25:38.42\00:25:40.58 So as far as people who would maybe 00:25:40.61\00:25:42.45 possibly want to come over here 00:25:42.48\00:25:43.73 and get involved with this project is a volunteer 00:25:43.76\00:25:46.29 especially in the area of teaching 00:25:46.32\00:25:47.78 what kind of qualifications do you feel 00:25:47.81\00:25:49.49 that they need to have? 00:25:49.52\00:25:51.22 We could really use some people here from the US 00:25:51.25\00:25:57.15 or from Australia or some other place 00:25:57.18\00:25:59.84 who could come and teach English 00:25:59.87\00:26:02.10 and who are capable of literacy training, 00:26:02.13\00:26:05.06 teaching literacy both to adults 00:26:05.09\00:26:08.21 and to children 00:26:08.24\00:26:10.39 who have a good spiritual foundation in their lives 00:26:10.42\00:26:16.08 and who are very adaptable to harsh difficult environment. 00:26:16.11\00:26:21.86 At least initially they must be people 00:26:21.89\00:26:24.33 who can adapt to living in unfavorable environment. 00:26:24.36\00:26:30.70 And that means who can handle mosquitoes, 00:26:30.73\00:26:33.79 who can handle outdoor toilets, who can handle primitive shower. 00:26:33.82\00:26:38.98 The good news is that there is doctor on location-- 00:26:39.01\00:26:41.11 There's a doctor on location 00:26:41.14\00:26:42.64 but they need to be a little bit adaptable 00:26:42.67\00:26:44.49 probably more so than your average mission project 00:26:44.52\00:26:47.56 because communication here is tough, 00:26:47.59\00:26:50.40 transportation here is tough. 00:26:50.43\00:26:51.46 There's no internet connection. 00:26:51.49\00:26:52.97 No internet connection, 00:26:53.00\00:26:54.12 there's one VHF telephone, there's-- 00:26:54.15\00:26:56.70 No radio and no television. No electricity there is nothing. 00:26:56.73\00:27:00.99 But on the other hand we-- we really could use people 00:27:01.02\00:27:05.28 to do that kind of work. 00:27:05.31\00:27:06.44 It would be very helpful 00:27:06.47\00:27:07.65 if we could have that kind of help. 00:27:07.68\00:27:09.65 Well, as you can tell the needs here in Vanuatu are really great 00:27:09.68\00:27:12.64 and there's a lot of opportunities here 00:27:12.67\00:27:14.92 for people like yourself to get involved 00:27:14.95\00:27:16.97 either financially by prayer 00:27:17.00\00:27:19.09 or even possibly looking at 00:27:19.12\00:27:20.86 a missionary career coming over here 00:27:20.89\00:27:22.95 and helping for one of the school years 00:27:22.98\00:27:24.82 for 10, 11 months. 00:27:24.85\00:27:26.16 And, yeah, if you like to get involved with this project 00:27:26.19\00:27:28.79 or any other projects of Laymen Ministries 00:27:28.82\00:27:30.62 or you want to know more about Laymen Ministries, 00:27:30.65\00:27:32.97 you could visit us at our website at www.lmn.org, 00:27:33.00\00:27:38.43 there's tags on there for all our different web sites 00:27:38.46\00:27:40.88 for quite number of the different projects, 00:27:40.91\00:27:42.69 there's a website tag on there for Vanuatu 00:27:42.72\00:27:45.63 and plus a video streaming 00:27:45.66\00:27:47.40 or you can contact us at Laymen Ministries, 00:27:47.43\00:27:49.38 that's 414, Zapada Road, Saint Maries, Idaho 83861. 00:27:49.41\00:27:53.61 If you are in Canada, the United States 00:27:53.64\00:27:55.28 you can call us at 1-800-245-1844 00:27:55.31\00:27:59.38 or you can always email us at office at lmn.org. 00:27:59.41\00:28:04.37
