I'm Jeff Reich and I'd like you 00:00:39.54\00:00:40.84 to come with me on a journey 00:00:40.87\00:00:41.97 as I revisit just some of the evidences 00:00:42.00\00:00:43.69 of my faith especially regarding Noah 00:00:43.72\00:00:46.13 and the flood story. 00:00:46.16\00:00:48.60 I mean, standing here you could see 00:00:48.63\00:00:49.94 like all different kinds of small seashells, 00:00:49.97\00:00:52.35 they're compressed together 00:00:52.38\00:00:53.41 and this is right at the top of the Mesa 00:00:53.44\00:00:55.39 here in the Goosenecks. 00:00:55.42\00:00:56.95 Eruption in Mt. St. Helens gave scientists 00:00:56.98\00:00:58.88 the opportunity to study what happens 00:00:58.91\00:01:00.26 when a catastrophe hits an area such as this. 00:01:00.29\00:01:03.28 When the water rushed over these falls, 00:01:03.31\00:01:04.70 it was ten times the size of Niagara 00:01:04.73\00:01:07.03 and what is known to be 00:01:07.06\00:01:08.18 the largest waterfall in existence. 00:01:08.21\00:01:10.42 All the water that came flowing down 00:01:10.45\00:01:12.04 through this area went down through the Scablands 00:01:12.07\00:01:14.28 of eastern Washington and right down 00:01:14.31\00:01:16.20 to that drainage system in the Columbia River 00:01:16.23\00:01:18.09 right out to the Pacific Ocean. 00:01:18.12\00:01:21.34 As Noah and his family came off the ark, 00:01:21.37\00:01:23.44 they stood in absolute horror as they looked around 00:01:23.47\00:01:25.64 at the devastation of the world. 00:01:25.67\00:01:27.29 Sadly, they knew this was the consequence of sin. 00:01:27.32\00:01:30.94 And I believe right here at the Grand Canyon 00:01:30.97\00:01:32.63 is probably one of the greatest testimonies 00:01:32.66\00:01:34.58 that prove the flood story. 00:01:34.61\00:01:36.30 The story of Noah and the flood 00:01:44.07\00:01:45.25 is extremely important for us today. 00:01:45.28\00:01:47.00 It points backwards to a time where God judged the world. 00:01:47.03\00:01:50.10 And it points forwards to a time 00:01:50.13\00:01:51.43 where God will judge the world again. 00:01:51.46\00:01:53.13 The evidences are all around us so much 00:01:53.16\00:01:55.64 so that all will be without excuse. 00:01:55.67\00:01:58.81 We're outside the city of Vilkaviskis. 00:02:09.82\00:02:11.83 Now, we are in Lithuania. 00:02:11.86\00:02:12.89 This time we're gonna be watching 00:02:12.92\00:02:14.13 what some of the Bible workers are doing here, 00:02:14.16\00:02:15.60 we'll be visiting with Pastor Arunas 00:02:15.63\00:02:17.28 at this little church with church group 00:02:17.31\00:02:19.18 and we'll be traveling around the country of Lithuania 00:02:19.21\00:02:21.08 showing you what Laymen Ministries 00:02:21.11\00:02:22.50 is doing here in this country. 00:02:22.53\00:02:24.09 Laymen Ministries has a long history here in Lithuania. 00:03:08.21\00:03:10.52 We actually came here in 1993, 00:03:10.55\00:03:12.55 so we've been working here for-- 00:03:12.58\00:03:14.01 oh, going on 15 years now. 00:03:14.04\00:03:15.70 A lot of people say, 00:03:15.73\00:03:16.82 well, how did you ever come to this country of Lithuania? 00:03:16.85\00:03:19.73 How did Laymen Ministries get involved? 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.79 And it's kind of an interesting story 00:03:21.82\00:03:23.35 because I remember back in the early 90s 00:03:23.38\00:03:25.88 we were working in Albania, Romania and Bulgaria, 00:03:25.91\00:03:28.69 and I was studying in one of my books-- 00:03:28.72\00:03:31.20 was sharing this idea about expanding your horizons 00:03:31.23\00:03:35.03 and I'm thinking, Lord, how should I expand 00:03:35.06\00:03:37.53 the horizons of Laymen Ministries. 00:03:37.56\00:03:39.76 And that night I went to bed and I'm not into dreams 00:03:39.79\00:03:43.00 and claiming to be a prophet or anything 00:03:43.03\00:03:44.93 but the weirdest thing happened. 00:03:44.96\00:03:47.49 I was praying, it's okay, Lord, 00:03:47.52\00:03:48.89 if you want us to expand our horizons, 00:03:48.92\00:03:50.18 we'll do that. 00:03:50.21\00:03:51.24 In the middle of the night, I woke up and I heard a voice 00:03:51.27\00:03:53.87 in my head say, go to Lithuania. 00:03:53.90\00:03:55.57 I've never heard of the country of Lithuania 00:03:55.60\00:03:57.68 in my whole life. 00:03:57.71\00:03:58.91 And so the next morning when I got up, I was curious. 00:03:58.94\00:04:00.97 I got out my Atlas and sure enough 00:04:01.00\00:04:03.43 I found up by Belarus and Poland, 00:04:03.46\00:04:05.70 up in the Baltic countries, 00:04:05.73\00:04:07.11 this little country called Lithuania. 00:04:07.14\00:04:08.54 I go wow, there is a country called Lithuania. 00:04:08.57\00:04:11.29 And two days later after that 00:04:11.32\00:04:13.61 I got this phone call by a boy 00:04:13.64\00:04:15.64 and he said, "Hello Jeff." 00:04:15.67\00:04:17.43 He said, "Have you ever thought about 00:04:17.46\00:04:18.75 coming to my country of Lithuania?" 00:04:18.78\00:04:20.46 He was a student from Weimar College. 00:04:20.49\00:04:22.13 I said, well, yeah, you know, 00:04:22.16\00:04:23.63 I've actually been thinking about going to Lithuania a lot. 00:04:23.66\00:04:26.36 And this young man connected me with a man 00:04:26.39\00:04:29.87 called Remus Sir Binschus 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.79 and in about six weeks later we had our airplane tickets 00:04:31.82\00:04:34.53 and we came to Lithuania. 00:04:34.56\00:04:35.61 And that was the beginning 00:04:35.64\00:04:36.73 of the whole Lithuanian project. 00:04:36.76\00:04:39.08 First we saw the need to publish literature 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.98 as books and tracks are amazing tools 00:04:41.01\00:04:42.92 to reach people with the truth. 00:04:42.95\00:04:45.45 We helped establish 00:04:45.48\00:04:46.51 the very first Adventist publishing house 00:04:46.54\00:04:48.77 with Remus Sir Binschus. 00:04:48.80\00:04:51.38 Soon we were publishing thousands of books and tracks, 00:04:51.41\00:04:54.27 titles such as the Desire of Ages, 00:04:54.30\00:04:56.27 The Great Controversy, Christ Object Lessons 00:04:56.30\00:04:58.86 and more with over 130,000 books and tracks 00:04:58.89\00:05:02.60 printed over the last 15 years. 00:05:02.63\00:05:05.34 We soon found we had another dilemma, 00:05:05.37\00:05:07.35 how to distribute this literature. 00:05:07.38\00:05:09.38 That's the start of Laymen Ministrie's 00:05:09.41\00:05:11.43 Youth and Missions Program. 00:05:11.46\00:05:13.40 Working together with Kevin and Kathy Paige, 00:05:13.43\00:05:15.50 we organized an effective work that was instrumental 00:05:15.53\00:05:18.34 in church growth across the country. 00:05:18.37\00:05:21.42 We sent over young people like Jonathan Peebles, 00:05:21.45\00:05:24.11 Joshua Miller, Shannon Parker and Jeremy Caulkins 00:05:24.14\00:05:26.98 who trained Lithuanian youth 00:05:27.01\00:05:28.64 how to sell books door-to-door. 00:05:28.67\00:05:30.78 The program became a great success. 00:05:30.81\00:05:33.01 They opened the doors in a country 00:05:33.04\00:05:34.54 that had been closed by communism. 00:05:34.57\00:05:36.65 These young people were the pioneers of the church, 00:05:36.68\00:05:39.32 speaking in home churches, sharing the truth 00:05:39.35\00:05:41.65 and distributing literature throughout Lithuania. 00:05:41.68\00:05:44.42 Lithuania is situated in Northern Europe 00:05:48.99\00:05:51.10 in an area called the Baltics 00:05:51.13\00:05:52.62 with Russia to the east and Poland to the south. 00:05:52.65\00:05:55.22 And it has a population of about 3.5 million people. 00:05:55.25\00:05:59.53 Lithuania has been one of the most 00:05:59.56\00:06:01.27 occupied countries in all of Europe, 00:06:01.30\00:06:03.14 yet on the other hand in the earlier centuries 00:06:03.17\00:06:05.30 when Vytautas the Great was king, 00:06:05.33\00:06:07.48 it occupied the territories of present day Belarus, Ukraine 00:06:07.51\00:06:11.33 and parts of Poland and Russia. 00:06:11.36\00:06:13.32 By the end of the 14th century, 00:06:13.35\00:06:15.16 Lithuania stretched across a substantial part of Europe 00:06:15.19\00:06:18.30 from the Baltic to the Black Sea. 00:06:18.33\00:06:20.92 It was also the only remaining Pagan country of Europe 00:06:20.95\00:06:23.47 until converted by the sword to Catholicism. 00:06:23.50\00:06:26.73 Today, while growing more and more secular 00:06:28.37\00:06:30.73 like much of Europe, the Catholic Church 00:06:30.76\00:06:32.81 is the state recognized religion. 00:06:32.84\00:06:35.21 Life in Lithuania is difficult especially 00:06:37.85\00:06:40.20 with the growing worldwide recession. 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.53 Unemployment is at all time highs. 00:06:42.56\00:06:44.61 It has some of the highest rates 00:06:44.64\00:06:46.28 in all of Europe for alcoholism, 00:06:46.31\00:06:48.35 depression, and suicide. 00:06:48.38\00:06:50.63 In the cities, people are crowded 00:06:50.66\00:06:52.14 into these small block of flats 00:06:52.17\00:06:53.95 or what we call apartment house complexes. 00:06:53.98\00:06:56.55 Life in the country is difficult. 00:06:56.58\00:06:58.71 The people survive by growing food 00:06:58.74\00:07:00.36 and keeping it in store for the long winters. 00:07:00.39\00:07:03.80 On this particular trip, 00:07:03.83\00:07:05.11 we're going to show you what the Bible workers 00:07:05.14\00:07:06.73 that are being sponsored by Laymen Ministries 00:07:06.76\00:07:08.33 are doing working on a one-to-one 00:07:08.36\00:07:09.78 with people in their homes. 00:07:09.81\00:07:11.22 Plus, we're gonna take you 00:07:11.25\00:07:12.28 to one of the poorest orphanages in Lithuania 00:07:12.31\00:07:14.60 and share with you 00:07:14.63\00:07:16.40 how we are sharing clothing and books and things 00:07:16.43\00:07:19.14 like that with the children 00:07:19.17\00:07:20.24 and also with the administrative staff. 00:07:20.27\00:07:23.60 On this trip, we flew into Vilnius, 00:07:46.85\00:07:48.51 the capital and drove straight to the city of Kaunas 00:07:48.54\00:07:51.11 to meet the Bible workers and the church leaders 00:07:51.14\00:07:53.48 to hold our annual training session. 00:07:53.51\00:07:57.29 Our Bible workers and pastors 00:07:57.32\00:07:58.65 are located in every region of this country. 00:07:58.68\00:08:01.38 Meetings like these bring new ideas 00:08:01.41\00:08:03.46 and encouragement to the workers. 00:08:03.49\00:08:05.21 The Bible workers cross various cultural boundaries 00:08:05.24\00:08:07.90 by also reaching Polish and Russian speaking people. 00:08:07.93\00:08:12.36 Pastor Arunas with his wife Neringa helped coordinate 00:08:12.39\00:08:15.00 Laymen Ministries work across Lithuania. 00:08:15.03\00:08:17.56 They live in the small city of Vilkaviskis. 00:08:17.59\00:08:20.03 Besides being a fulltime pastor, 00:08:20.06\00:08:21.75 Arunas holds training seminars for the Bible workers 00:08:21.78\00:08:24.25 and keeps in contact with them 00:08:24.28\00:08:25.60 to provide encouragement and counsel. 00:08:25.63\00:08:28.09 They also organize summer youth meetings 00:08:28.12\00:08:29.75 and oversee the work in many of the orphanages. 00:08:29.78\00:08:32.57 Arunas also helped start this small church in the city 00:08:32.60\00:08:35.08 where there had been no previous Adventist presence. 00:08:35.11\00:08:38.24 We bought it several years ago 00:08:38.27\00:08:40.27 and we're remodeling every year 00:08:40.30\00:08:42.56 and last year we were working 00:08:42.59\00:08:44.40 again outside the church building 00:08:44.43\00:08:46.68 and we just painted it and the roof has changed 00:08:46.71\00:08:49.90 and the windows and this year 00:08:49.93\00:08:52.21 we are working inside the building. 00:08:52.24\00:08:54.78 The work is difficult as people 00:08:54.81\00:08:56.27 are not very often open to new ideas, 00:08:56.30\00:08:58.63 especially outside of catholic tradition. 00:08:58.66\00:09:02.41 After resting up, we drove all the way up 00:09:02.44\00:09:04.31 by the Lithuanian border 00:09:04.34\00:09:05.38 to the small village of Daunorai 00:09:05.41\00:09:07.34 to meet with two of our Bible workers named Julius and Roma. 00:09:07.37\00:09:10.95 They live on a small farm 00:09:10.98\00:09:12.22 which they use as their outpost to reach the nearby cities. 00:09:12.25\00:09:15.50 They also use their farm as a quiet country retreat, 00:09:15.53\00:09:18.26 holding summer and winter programs 00:09:18.29\00:09:20.05 for some of the children from the nearby orphanage. 00:09:20.08\00:09:22.67 This is Julius, he would say Lulius, right? 00:09:22.70\00:09:26.24 Lulius in Lithuanian and Roma, 00:09:26.27\00:09:28.47 they have been Bible workers 00:09:28.50\00:09:29.55 for Laymen Ministries for eight years. 00:09:29.58\00:09:31.66 Roma has Bible studies with some of the neighbors, 00:09:45.02\00:09:47.34 such as this lady. 00:09:47.37\00:09:48.69 They also hold group Bible studies at their home 00:09:48.72\00:09:51.28 as well as in the nearby city of Birzai. 00:09:51.31\00:09:54.08 Roma shares with her neighbor friend 00:09:57.09\00:09:58.66 every week in a personal one-on-one Bible study. 00:09:58.69\00:10:01.80 The test of time has proven 00:10:01.83\00:10:03.14 as to be one of the most effective ways 00:10:03.17\00:10:04.86 of leading a person to Christ 00:10:04.89\00:10:06.73 and making solid church members. 00:10:06.76\00:10:09.27 Our next stop is to visit another Bible worker 00:10:12.35\00:10:14.56 by the name of Daiva. 00:10:14.59\00:10:16.44 Just got to Silale, we're at Daiva's house 00:10:16.47\00:10:19.02 and Daiva's been a Bible worker with us for-- 00:10:19.05\00:10:22.81 how many years now? 00:10:22.84\00:10:24.23 Many years. 00:10:27.69\00:10:28.78 Many years, she says. 00:10:28.81\00:10:30.65 We're gonna see what she's doing here 00:10:30.68\00:10:32.15 while we're in Silale 00:10:32.18\00:10:33.27 and then we'll be going to church here tomorrow morning. 00:10:33.30\00:10:36.52 Bible studies like these are happening 00:10:55.39\00:10:57.05 with Laymen Ministries Bible workers 00:10:57.08\00:10:58.70 all across Lithuania. 00:10:58.73\00:11:00.81 These Bible studies have brought about 00:11:00.84\00:11:02.32 hundreds of baptisms over the last 15 years 00:11:02.35\00:11:05.25 and have been one of the most effective 00:11:05.28\00:11:06.93 outreach methods in this country. 00:11:06.96\00:11:09.60 You know, they are just finishing up 00:11:09.63\00:11:11.01 their Bible study here 00:11:11.04\00:11:12.17 and this is what it's all about. 00:11:12.20\00:11:14.19 It's the Bible workers coming into people's homes 00:11:14.22\00:11:16.33 and making friends with people and sharing the word of God, 00:11:16.36\00:11:19.75 they just got done-- having a Bible study 00:11:19.78\00:11:21.99 about the meaning of life 00:11:22.02\00:11:23.74 and the importance of the Christian experience 00:11:23.77\00:11:26.82 and having relationship with Christ 00:11:26.85\00:11:28.55 and how it can give you life and it's really-- 00:11:28.58\00:11:32.69 this is really what it's all about, 00:11:32.72\00:11:34.40 coming here and making friends 00:11:34.43\00:11:35.87 and sharing the Bible with people. 00:11:35.90\00:11:38.91 Pastor Arunas, who is the Director 00:12:03.84\00:12:05.30 for Laymen Ministries here in Lithuania 00:12:05.33\00:12:07.29 had a unique experience 00:12:07.32\00:12:08.43 with this brother by the name Arunas, 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.61 so both of their names are Arunas. 00:12:10.64\00:12:13.08 But Arunas, when he was a young boy, 00:12:13.11\00:12:14.97 this Arunas, when he was a young boy, 00:12:15.00\00:12:16.54 he was an altar boy for the Catholic Church, 00:12:16.57\00:12:19.14 when he grew up, like many Lithuanian people, 00:12:19.17\00:12:21.11 he fell away from his faith 00:12:21.14\00:12:22.46 and stopped practicing Catholicism. 00:12:22.49\00:12:25.60 He became a building contractor and he became married, 00:12:25.63\00:12:28.44 he started traveling back and forth 00:12:28.47\00:12:30.05 to Norway working over there 00:12:30.08\00:12:31.80 and he wasn't happy with his life 00:12:31.83\00:12:33.20 because they were drinking and partying 00:12:33.23\00:12:34.65 quite a bit and he finally decided, 00:12:34.68\00:12:36.53 he wanted to make some changes 00:12:36.56\00:12:37.86 so he stopped drinking alcohol 00:12:37.89\00:12:39.76 and his wife wasn't very happy with that 00:12:39.79\00:12:42.01 and so she started living a party lifestyle 00:12:42.04\00:12:45.41 and he started going away from that 00:12:45.44\00:12:47.31 and she finally left him 00:12:47.34\00:12:48.41 and they went through a divorce. 00:12:48.44\00:12:49.86 He came back to Lithuania, shattered, 00:12:49.89\00:12:51.99 looking for work as a building contractor. 00:12:52.02\00:12:54.66 It turned out the Lord led him to a situation 00:12:54.69\00:12:57.07 where he was helping to remodel 00:12:57.10\00:12:58.75 a Seventh-day Adventist Church member's home 00:12:58.78\00:13:01.11 and one day he heard them over talking 00:13:01.14\00:13:03.04 about religious things and he started asking questions 00:13:03.07\00:13:05.71 and this led of course to these church members 00:13:05.74\00:13:07.94 giving him several books. 00:13:07.97\00:13:09.61 One book they gave to him was the book Great Controversy 00:13:09.64\00:13:12.69 and he read this book and he read several other books 00:13:12.72\00:13:15.05 and he started having questions, 00:13:15.08\00:13:16.13 so he called Pastor Arunas on the telephone 00:13:16.16\00:13:18.69 and very soon they started 00:13:18.72\00:13:20.33 having Bible studies just like this. 00:13:20.36\00:13:22.79 Just last year in September 00:13:22.82\00:13:24.97 when water was freezing cold, 00:13:25.00\00:13:27.43 he was baptized into Christ and then after that, 00:13:27.46\00:13:31.12 he started dedicating himself to helping Pastor Arunas 00:13:31.15\00:13:34.27 remodel the old church here in Vilkaviskis. 00:13:34.30\00:13:37.15 And this is what it's all about. 00:13:37.18\00:13:40.03 People leading people to Christ, 00:13:40.06\00:13:42.36 teaching to teach, 00:13:42.39\00:13:43.88 so that other people too will in turn, 00:13:43.91\00:13:45.99 turn around and be able to share 00:13:46.02\00:13:47.48 what they've learned about Christ with somebody else. 00:13:47.51\00:13:50.43 After we left Daunorai, 00:13:53.21\00:13:54.88 we headed towards the city of Siauliai. 00:13:54.91\00:13:57.09 Along the way, we visited the historic Hill of Crosses. 00:13:57.12\00:14:00.62 The history behind the spot dates back to the 18th century 00:14:00.65\00:14:04.32 when people started placing crosses here 00:14:04.35\00:14:06.33 for those who were killed in the uprisings 00:14:06.36\00:14:08.01 against the Russians. 00:14:08.04\00:14:09.79 This hill took on more significance after World War II 00:14:09.82\00:14:12.64 when the occupying Russians 00:14:12.67\00:14:14.21 tried to bulldoze the hill at least three times. 00:14:14.24\00:14:17.06 The defiant Lithuanians used it 00:14:17.09\00:14:18.72 to demonstrate their allegiance to their original identity, 00:14:18.75\00:14:21.80 religion, and heritage. 00:14:21.83\00:14:23.78 Today the number of crosses is unknown 00:14:23.81\00:14:25.75 but estimations put it at over 50,000. 00:14:25.78\00:14:28.69 Our ministry has a long history 00:14:54.19\00:14:55.81 with this church in Siauliai as our workers, 00:14:55.84\00:14:58.11 both national and from America 00:14:58.14\00:15:00.12 have had a big part in helping this church become established. 00:15:00.15\00:15:03.94 We're in the city of Siauliai 00:15:03.97\00:15:05.36 and we're gonna go to church here this morning. 00:15:05.39\00:15:07.69 Siauliai church has had this house 00:15:07.72\00:15:09.38 that was renovated into a church 00:15:09.41\00:15:10.73 for quite a number of years now. 00:15:10.76\00:15:12.33 This morning, the emphasis is going to be on the harvest, 00:15:12.36\00:15:15.48 yeah, because it's cold and it's October 00:15:15.51\00:15:17.75 and it's harvest time, and one thing you'll notice 00:15:17.78\00:15:21.05 is that a lot of the people here dress really warm, 00:15:21.08\00:15:24.07 the church isn't heated very well. 00:15:24.10\00:15:26.41 Some of the places are heated pretty good 00:15:26.44\00:15:27.96 but there has been some places 00:15:27.99\00:15:29.03 where we go to church on Sabbath here where-it's, 00:15:29.06\00:15:31.60 you can see your breath inside the building 00:15:31.63\00:15:34.14 but they have a really active church here in Siauliai. 00:15:34.17\00:15:37.72 I'm looking forward to speaking to the people here today. 00:15:37.75\00:15:40.71 At first, it was in the living room 00:15:42.29\00:15:43.93 of the church member's house. 00:15:43.96\00:15:45.37 Later, the house was purchased, 00:15:45.40\00:15:47.07 remodeled and now is packed every Sabbath. 00:15:47.10\00:15:49.49 So when Christ comes for the great harvest, 00:15:49.52\00:15:52.19 what is He coming for? 00:15:52.22\00:15:53.37 People? Yes. 00:15:53.40\00:15:55.22 So, all the people are gonna be harvesting. 00:15:55.25\00:15:58.38 This particular Sabbath day, 00:15:58.41\00:15:59.75 we're having a harvest celebration. 00:15:59.78\00:16:01.74 I spoke on the last great harvest 00:16:01.77\00:16:03.63 and how Christ works in our hearts 00:16:03.66\00:16:05.20 to have our characters come to fruition. 00:16:05.23\00:16:07.34 In preparation for that last great harvest, 00:16:07.37\00:16:10.39 it was great to reconnect with many old friends again. 00:16:10.42\00:16:13.56 What they are doing here is something very unusual, 00:16:20.11\00:16:22.28 after the church service, since this is the harvest time 00:16:22.31\00:16:24.52 they are giving food to all the church members. 00:16:24.55\00:16:27.44 We have a nice arrangement here 00:16:27.47\00:16:28.84 with different kinds of breads 00:16:28.87\00:16:30.66 and some soy patties and tomatoes. 00:16:30.69\00:16:34.36 It's kind of different to be honest with you. 00:16:34.39\00:16:38.39 It's been five years since I was in Lithuania, 00:16:38.42\00:16:41.67 I missed a lot of things from here 00:16:41.70\00:16:43.16 but one of the things that I missed 00:16:43.19\00:16:44.37 the most is the food and the drink. 00:16:44.40\00:16:47.46 In all the countries we always traveled to, 00:16:51.19\00:16:52.92 we like to show you the different types 00:16:52.95\00:16:54.26 of cultural foods that they prepare. 00:16:54.29\00:16:55.93 In Lithuania, one of the most famous foods 00:16:55.96\00:16:59.00 is the potato and in fact it's very dear to my heart 00:16:59.03\00:17:02.96 because I'm from the state of Idaho 00:17:02.99\00:17:05.19 in the good old USA and everybody knows that-- 00:17:05.22\00:17:07.49 lives to close to Idaho 00:17:07.52\00:17:08.69 that Idaho is famous for famous potatoes. 00:17:08.72\00:17:12.42 And in Lithuania, 00:17:12.45\00:17:13.52 they cook a zillion different types of potato dishes 00:17:13.55\00:17:16.86 but she's gonna be preparing today 00:17:16.89\00:17:19.85 a dish called cepelinai. 00:17:19.88\00:17:22.03 Now, I think that it really should be called zeppelini. 00:17:22.06\00:17:25.64 For years I always pronounced it that 00:17:25.67\00:17:27.30 because I thought that the finished product 00:17:27.33\00:17:29.14 kind of looked like a zeppelin, 00:17:29.17\00:17:30.33 now you've probably seen those big German balloons 00:17:30.36\00:17:32.68 you know, they were called zeppelins. 00:17:32.71\00:17:34.09 Well, the finished product is similar to that 00:17:34.12\00:17:36.34 and it's quite a, an elaborate process. 00:17:36.37\00:17:38.85 One of the first things that they do apparently 00:17:44.96\00:17:47.08 is they peel potatoes 00:17:47.11\00:17:48.98 and she soaks them in some water. 00:17:49.01\00:17:51.52 It's a unique combination 00:17:54.15\00:17:56.03 because she's gonna mix together 00:17:56.06\00:17:58.10 raw potatoes and boiled potatoes, 00:17:58.13\00:18:01.39 they're like mashed potatoes, you'll see there. 00:18:01.42\00:18:03.50 Here you have some soft cheese. 00:18:03.53\00:18:05.49 This cheese is a, yeah it's-- 00:18:05.52\00:18:07.95 what they call fresh cheese? 00:18:07.98\00:18:09.12 It's next step up from cottage cheese. 00:18:09.15\00:18:12.22 It's kind of a firm, soft cheese, 00:18:12.25\00:18:13.87 kind of like feta cheese but with no seasoning in it. 00:18:13.90\00:18:16.79 This is gonna go inside the zeppelini. 00:18:16.82\00:18:19.80 So you'll see that she is doing this, 00:18:19.83\00:18:21.68 she's gonna mix this cooked mashed potatoes together 00:18:21.71\00:18:24.47 with raw grated potatoes and a potato puree 00:18:24.50\00:18:27.49 which she'll be using a machine for it a little bit. 00:18:27.52\00:18:29.75 So you can see it's just raw potatoes 00:18:31.91\00:18:33.81 that are just whizzed up kind of almost like 00:18:33.84\00:18:35.59 what we'd use in a champion juicer in the States. 00:18:35.62\00:18:39.99 Interesting. 00:18:40.02\00:18:41.66 The next step Neringa is using here as she's taking that, 00:18:41.69\00:18:45.51 the raw potatoes that was made into a puree 00:18:45.54\00:18:48.77 and she's putting it to like, piece of cheese cloth 00:18:48.80\00:18:50.97 and straining all the liquid out of it 00:18:51.00\00:18:53.13 so she's ending up with kind of like a starchy 00:18:53.16\00:18:56.31 looking material here. 00:18:56.34\00:18:57.37 It's just raw potato starch. 00:18:57.40\00:18:59.66 So this is potato juices in here 00:18:59.69\00:19:02.48 and I'm gonna have John, our cameraman, 00:19:02.51\00:19:06.24 demonstrate drinking this stuff. 00:19:06.27\00:19:09.50 I'm not gonna do it. 00:19:09.53\00:19:10.90 Okay, here it goes. 00:19:10.93\00:19:12.48 This is raw potato juice. 00:19:22.79\00:19:26.33 It's got to be at least 37 different nutrients. 00:19:26.36\00:19:30.45 What do you think? 00:19:30.48\00:19:32.68 It's good. 00:19:32.71\00:19:33.74 Are you serious? 00:19:33.77\00:19:35.43 Might need a little salt 00:19:35.46\00:19:36.52 but other than that, it's good. 00:19:36.55\00:19:39.00 It's good. 00:19:39.03\00:19:41.94 Now after these things are all rolled together 00:19:41.97\00:19:44.49 with the stuffing inside, 00:19:44.52\00:19:46.20 she carefully places them in boiling water, 00:19:46.23\00:19:48.53 so in a sense what they are is a potato dumpling. 00:19:48.56\00:19:52.10 But it's the most unique potato dumpling 00:19:52.13\00:19:53.95 I've ever seen in my life. 00:19:53.98\00:19:55.97 She's mixing up a special sauce 00:19:56.00\00:19:58.42 and has like some butter and some salt, 00:19:58.45\00:20:00.80 some different things and uses 00:20:00.83\00:20:02.42 sparingly on top of your potato zeppelini 00:20:02.45\00:20:05.85 and put it on that plate. 00:20:05.88\00:20:08.08 Some people like just I've mentioned to you, 00:20:11.60\00:20:13.33 they take oil and they just dump a ton of oil on it. 00:20:13.36\00:20:16.01 She's using a little bit of butter sparingly 00:20:16.04\00:20:18.16 with some salt and little bit of sour cream 00:20:18.19\00:20:20.89 and that will make a nice flavored sauce 00:20:20.92\00:20:23.53 for the top of it. 00:20:23.56\00:20:24.68 This is the finished product. 00:20:24.71\00:20:26.00 This is the zeppelini. 00:20:26.03\00:20:27.63 Cepelinai, they call it. 00:20:27.66\00:20:29.51 It's delicious. 00:20:32.84\00:20:34.48 Really good. 00:20:34.51\00:20:35.58 Now, I tell you what, 00:20:35.61\00:20:36.65 two of these will stick to your ribs. 00:20:36.68\00:20:39.18 Today, we're gonna go over 00:20:41.78\00:20:43.78 and meet with the director from one of the orphanages. 00:20:43.81\00:20:45.94 We're loading up all the stuff 00:20:45.97\00:20:47.09 to take over to the orphanages today 00:20:47.12\00:20:48.96 and when we meet the director, 00:20:48.99\00:20:50.61 we're gonna over to that market place 00:20:50.64\00:20:52.18 and buy some clothes and things. 00:20:52.21\00:20:53.66 The next morning, we headed south about 40 miles 00:20:53.69\00:20:55.99 to the small city of Siminus 00:20:56.02\00:20:57.93 where we met with some of the ladies 00:20:57.96\00:20:59.24 who work at the local orphanage. 00:20:59.27\00:21:01.47 In the larger cities, the orphanages usually 00:21:03.41\00:21:05.32 receive some kind of help from other European countries 00:21:05.35\00:21:08.70 while the smaller orphanages out in the country 00:21:08.73\00:21:11.41 are in a desperate situation. 00:21:11.44\00:21:13.84 After meeting with the director and the administrative staff, 00:21:16.71\00:21:19.64 it was decided these kids needed warm winter clothing, 00:21:19.67\00:21:22.41 shoes, and other basic clothes. 00:21:22.44\00:21:24.67 Together, we went with some of the workers 00:21:24.70\00:21:26.43 on a shopping spree to get what they needed. 00:21:26.46\00:21:29.12 These ladies are really into this orphanage, 00:21:46.07\00:21:48.27 if you watch the expression on them 00:21:48.30\00:21:49.93 as they are purchasing things, 00:21:49.96\00:21:51.51 one girl is going, oh, very good, 00:21:51.54\00:21:53.75 it's great, it's good, you know, 00:21:53.78\00:21:54.83 because she's actually able to get some clothing for the kids. 00:21:54.86\00:21:57.46 They have been having a real problem 00:21:57.49\00:21:59.38 with being able to have quality clothing 00:21:59.41\00:22:01.12 and to be able to have just socks 00:22:01.15\00:22:03.42 and underwear and things like that, 00:22:03.45\00:22:04.65 so it's nice to see that the administrative staff 00:22:04.68\00:22:08.97 are really into the children 00:22:09.00\00:22:11.01 and they are not doing this just as a job 00:22:11.04\00:22:12.87 but they are doing 'cause their hearts are into it. 00:22:12.90\00:22:15.15 It's interesting 'cause this lady 00:22:37.20\00:22:38.80 who is actually giving us about five coats for free 00:22:38.83\00:22:42.17 and she's crying, I don't know 00:22:42.20\00:22:43.36 if you're noticing this or not, 00:22:43.39\00:22:44.46 but she's actually got tears in her eyes 00:22:44.49\00:22:46.39 saying that she wants to help out. 00:22:46.42\00:22:48.37 Apparently her son was recently 00:22:52.91\00:22:54.54 killed with some kind of incident 00:22:54.57\00:22:56.11 and she's got some problems at home 00:22:56.14\00:22:57.78 and apparently she just got a real sensitive 00:22:57.81\00:22:59.96 and kinder heart and she wants to help out 00:22:59.99\00:23:01.95 so she's donating a lot of these coats 00:23:01.98\00:23:04.41 and then we're gonna buy something or two. 00:23:04.44\00:23:06.49 Basically he's gonna come back to visit this lady again 00:23:10.53\00:23:13.23 to give some literature to her. 00:23:13.26\00:23:15.63 Okay, what's next on the list? 00:23:15.66\00:23:17.85 You get this, 00:23:27.45\00:23:28.70 we're not only just buying clothes for orphans 00:23:28.73\00:23:30.48 but we're giving them spiritual literature 00:23:30.51\00:23:32.17 and this is a real open door 00:23:32.20\00:23:34.62 for being able to share Christ in the orphanages 00:23:34.65\00:23:36.97 with the administrative people and the kids there. 00:23:37.00\00:23:40.83 In this particular orphanage, 00:23:40.86\00:23:41.89 they have children who are all the way up 00:23:41.92\00:23:43.69 to the age of 21 years of age 00:23:43.72\00:23:45.09 between the full ages of four, six, 00:23:45.12\00:23:47.31 all the way to 21 years of age. 00:23:47.34\00:23:49.40 Wow! 00:23:56.87\00:23:58.04 Look at the stuff. 00:23:58.07\00:24:00.33 I'm happy. I'm happy. 00:24:00.36\00:24:02.05 Good. 00:24:02.08\00:24:03.23 Back in 1995, two missionaries 00:24:09.21\00:24:11.88 who worked with Laymen Ministries, 00:24:11.91\00:24:13.25 Joshua Miller and Jonathan Peeble 00:24:13.28\00:24:15.09 saw how destitute things 00:24:15.12\00:24:16.40 were in the orphanage by where they lived. 00:24:16.43\00:24:18.92 They soon started searching out 00:24:18.95\00:24:20.18 other poor orphanages around the country. 00:24:20.21\00:24:22.39 Laymen Ministries made this an extension of our project, 00:24:27.47\00:24:30.17 providing clothing, shoes, 00:24:30.20\00:24:31.95 and spiritual food for their souls, as well. 00:24:31.98\00:24:34.69 To this day, we've continued to be involved 00:24:37.47\00:24:39.39 with the ministry to these poor orphanages. 00:24:39.42\00:24:42.65 Small orphanages located in the more rural areas 00:24:47.14\00:24:49.57 such as this one struggle 00:24:49.60\00:24:51.05 just to keep the heat turned on. 00:24:51.08\00:24:53.71 The director told me they would literally not turn the heat on 00:24:53.74\00:24:56.52 until the 1st of November. 00:24:56.55\00:24:58.45 While we were there in October, 00:24:58.48\00:24:59.51 the building was a chilly 55 degrees inside. 00:24:59.54\00:25:03.21 The children lacked basic warm clothing, 00:25:05.46\00:25:07.74 under garments, and food was limited as well. 00:25:07.77\00:25:10.97 Children and staff also received from us Bibles, books, 00:25:16.13\00:25:19.82 and Bible study materials. 00:25:19.85\00:25:21.76 The kids at this orphanage are the outcasts of society. 00:25:24.13\00:25:27.26 Most here are handicapped, born with birth defects, 00:25:27.29\00:25:30.33 or have some emotional issues from poor 00:25:30.36\00:25:32.61 and even abusive parenting. 00:25:32.64\00:25:35.09 Many orphans are here because of their parents 00:25:35.12\00:25:37.18 who are alcoholic or simply have abandoned them. 00:25:37.21\00:25:40.60 The director Mrs. Elena Downiski 00:25:43.80\00:25:46.20 showed us the giving tree 00:25:46.23\00:25:47.58 of people who have donated before. 00:25:47.61\00:25:49.58 On the wall was Joshua and Inga Miller's name 00:25:49.61\00:25:51.86 and Pastor Arunas as well, all Laymen Ministries workers. 00:25:51.89\00:25:55.49 As we walked around the facility, 00:25:58.19\00:25:59.95 I was impressed that while they were poor, 00:25:59.98\00:26:02.03 the building was kept clean and orderly. 00:26:02.06\00:26:04.57 They had classrooms where they engaged 00:26:04.60\00:26:06.40 in special activities for the children. 00:26:06.43\00:26:10.47 All the children were very happy that we came 00:26:10.50\00:26:12.90 and all showed a great enthusiasm. 00:26:12.93\00:26:15.35 When it came time to distribute some of the items, 00:26:17.48\00:26:19.70 the kids became very excited. 00:26:19.73\00:26:22.00 Other items were distributed in a more discretionary manner. 00:26:22.03\00:26:25.53 Today, Laymen Ministries continues 00:26:37.54\00:26:39.69 to support Bible workers and pastors, 00:26:39.72\00:26:42.16 publishing literature, and orphanage outreach. 00:26:42.19\00:26:45.18 We have a vision of expanding 00:26:45.21\00:26:46.52 into radio and television broadcast 00:26:46.55\00:26:48.70 as well as seminars held across the country. 00:26:48.73\00:26:52.09 Please pray with us for this little country of Lithuania. 00:26:52.12\00:26:55.72
