I'm Jeff Reich and I'd like you to come with me 00:00:39.74\00:00:41.44 on a journey as I revisit 00:00:41.47\00:00:42.78 just some of the evidences of my faith 00:00:42.81\00:00:44.40 especially regarding Noah and the flood story. 00:00:44.43\00:00:47.56 I mean, standing here you could see like 00:00:48.72\00:00:50.19 all different kinds of small seashells, 00:00:50.22\00:00:52.41 they're compressed together and this is right at the top 00:00:52.44\00:00:54.74 of the Mesa here in the Goosenecks. 00:00:54.77\00:00:57.09 Eruption in Mt. St. Helens gave scientists 00:00:57.12\00:00:58.84 the opportunity to study what happens 00:00:58.87\00:01:00.26 when a catastrophe hits an area such as this. 00:01:00.29\00:01:02.42 When the water rushed over to these falls, 00:01:03.60\00:01:04.88 it was ten times the size of Niagara 00:01:04.91\00:01:07.18 and what is known to be 00:01:07.21\00:01:08.24 the largest waterfall in existence. 00:01:08.27\00:01:10.54 All the water that came flowing 00:01:10.57\00:01:11.69 down through this area went down 00:01:11.72\00:01:13.35 through the Scablands of eastern Washington 00:01:13.38\00:01:15.53 and right down to that drainage system 00:01:15.56\00:01:17.10 in the Columbia River right after the Pacific Ocean. 00:01:17.13\00:01:21.49 As Noah and his family came off the ark, 00:01:21.52\00:01:23.47 they stood in absolute horror 00:01:23.50\00:01:24.91 as they looked around at the devastation of the world. 00:01:24.94\00:01:27.32 Sadly, they knew this was the consequence of sin. 00:01:27.35\00:01:31.01 And I believe right here at the Grand Canyon 00:01:31.04\00:01:32.71 is probably one of the greatest testimonies 00:01:32.74\00:01:34.67 that proves the flood story. 00:01:34.70\00:01:36.12 The story of Noah and the flood 00:01:44.31\00:01:45.34 is extremely important for us today. 00:01:45.37\00:01:47.05 It points backwards to a time where God judged the world. 00:01:47.08\00:01:50.15 And it points forwards to a time 00:01:50.18\00:01:51.34 where God will judge the world again. 00:01:51.37\00:01:53.19 The evidences are all around 00:01:53.22\00:01:55.14 and so much so that all will be without excuse. 00:01:55.17\00:01:58.62 We're outside the city of Vilkaviskis. 00:02:09.62\00:02:11.85 Now, we are in Lithuania. 00:02:11.88\00:02:12.91 This time we're gonna be watching 00:02:12.94\00:02:14.21 what some of the Bible workers are doing here, 00:02:14.24\00:02:15.67 we'll be visiting with the pastor Remus 00:02:15.70\00:02:17.40 at this little church with church group 00:02:17.43\00:02:19.17 and we'll be traveling around the country of Lithuania 00:02:19.20\00:02:21.14 showing you what Laymen Ministries 00:02:21.17\00:02:22.60 is doing here in this country. 00:02:22.63\00:02:23.74 Laymen Ministries has a long history here in Lithuania. 00:03:08.35\00:03:10.52 We actually came here in 1993, 00:03:10.55\00:03:12.57 so we've been working here for-- 00:03:12.60\00:03:13.79 oh, going on 15 years now. 00:03:13.82\00:03:16.01 A lot of people say, well, how did you ever come 00:03:16.04\00:03:17.93 to this country of Lithuania? 00:03:17.96\00:03:19.72 How did Laymen Ministries get involved? 00:03:19.75\00:03:22.08 And it's kind of an interesting story 00:03:22.11\00:03:23.46 because I remember back in the early 90s 00:03:23.49\00:03:25.97 we were working in Albania, Romania and Bulgaria, 00:03:26.00\00:03:28.77 and I was studying in one of my books-- 00:03:28.80\00:03:31.20 was sharing this idea about expanding your horizons 00:03:31.23\00:03:35.14 and I thinking, Lord, how should I expand 00:03:35.17\00:03:37.68 the horizons of Laymen Ministries. 00:03:37.71\00:03:40.01 And that night I went to bed and I'm not into dreams 00:03:40.04\00:03:43.19 and claiming to be a prophet or anything 00:03:43.22\00:03:45.19 but the weirdest thing happened. 00:03:45.22\00:03:47.61 I was praying, it's okay, 00:03:47.64\00:03:48.67 Lord, if you want us to expand our horizons, we'll do that. 00:03:48.70\00:03:51.31 In the middle of the night, I woke up 00:03:51.34\00:03:53.16 and I heard a voice in my head say, go to Lithuania. 00:03:53.19\00:03:55.66 I've never heard of the country of Lithuania 00:03:55.69\00:03:57.70 in my whole life. 00:03:57.73\00:03:58.95 And so the next morning when I got up, I was curious. 00:03:58.98\00:04:00.95 I got out my Atlas and sure enough 00:04:00.98\00:04:03.52 I found up by Belarus and Poland, 00:04:03.55\00:04:05.78 up in the Baltic countries, 00:04:05.81\00:04:07.16 this little country called Lithuania. 00:04:07.19\00:04:08.72 I go wow, there is a country called Lithuania. 00:04:08.75\00:04:11.48 And two days later after that I got this phone call by a boy 00:04:11.51\00:04:15.78 and he said, "Hello Jeff." 00:04:15.81\00:04:17.64 He said, "Have you ever thought about coming 00:04:17.67\00:04:18.91 to my country of Lithuania?" 00:04:18.94\00:04:20.56 He was a student from Weimar College. 00:04:20.59\00:04:22.14 I said, well, yeah, 00:04:22.17\00:04:23.34 you know, I've actually been thinking about 00:04:23.37\00:04:24.80 going to Lithuania a lot. 00:04:24.83\00:04:26.49 And this young man connected me 00:04:26.52\00:04:29.16 with a man called Remus Sir Binschus 00:04:29.19\00:04:31.86 and in about six weeks later we had our airplane tickets 00:04:31.89\00:04:34.54 and we came to Lithuania. 00:04:34.57\00:04:35.60 And that was the beginning 00:04:35.63\00:04:36.66 of the whole Lithuanian project. 00:04:36.69\00:04:39.18 First we saw the need to publish literature 00:04:39.21\00:04:41.17 as books and tracks are amazing tools 00:04:41.20\00:04:42.94 to reach people with the truth. 00:04:42.97\00:04:45.33 We helped establish the very first 00:04:45.36\00:04:47.64 Adventist publishing house with Remus Sir Binschus. 00:04:47.67\00:04:51.65 Soon we were publishing thousands of books and tracks, 00:04:51.68\00:04:54.36 titles such as the Desire of Ages, 00:04:54.39\00:04:56.44 The Great Controversy, Christ Object Lessons 00:04:56.47\00:04:58.99 and more with over 130,000 books 00:04:59.02\00:05:02.13 and tracks printed over the last 15 years. 00:05:02.16\00:05:05.51 We soon found we had another dilemma, 00:05:05.54\00:05:07.43 how to distribute this literature. 00:05:07.46\00:05:09.51 That's the start of Laymen Ministrie's 00:05:09.54\00:05:11.43 Youth and Missions Program. 00:05:11.46\00:05:13.38 Working together with Kevin and Kathy Paige, 00:05:13.41\00:05:15.53 we organized an effective work 00:05:15.56\00:05:17.34 that was instrumental in church growth 00:05:17.37\00:05:19.15 across the country. 00:05:19.18\00:05:21.55 We sent over young people like Jonathan Peebles, 00:05:21.58\00:05:24.21 Joshua Miller, Shannon Parker and Jeremy Caulkins 00:05:24.24\00:05:26.93 who trained Lithuanian youth 00:05:26.96\00:05:28.74 how to sell books door-to-door. 00:05:28.77\00:05:30.80 The program became a great success. 00:05:30.83\00:05:32.95 They opened the doors in a country 00:05:32.98\00:05:34.71 that had been closed by communism. 00:05:34.74\00:05:36.69 These young people were the pioneers of the church. 00:05:36.72\00:05:39.36 Speaking in home churches, sharing the truth 00:05:39.39\00:05:41.62 and distributing literature throughout Lithuania. 00:05:41.65\00:05:43.94 Lithuania is situated in Northern Europe 00:05:49.11\00:05:51.32 in an area called the Baltics 00:05:51.35\00:05:52.65 with Russia to the east and Poland to the south. 00:05:52.68\00:05:55.23 And it has a population of about 3.5 million people. 00:05:55.26\00:05:59.74 Lithuania has been one of the most occupied 00:05:59.77\00:06:02.00 countries in all of Europe, 00:06:02.03\00:06:03.25 yet on the other hand in the earlier centuries 00:06:03.28\00:06:05.34 when Vytautas the Great was king, 00:06:05.37\00:06:07.57 it occupied the territories of present day Belarus, 00:06:07.60\00:06:10.70 Ukraine and parts of Poland and Russia. 00:06:10.73\00:06:13.18 By the end of the 14th century, 00:06:13.21\00:06:15.17 Lithuania stretched across a substantial part of Europe 00:06:15.20\00:06:18.39 from the Baltic to the Black Sea. 00:06:18.42\00:06:20.87 It was also the only remaining Pagan country of Europe 00:06:20.90\00:06:23.40 until converted by the sword to Catholicism. 00:06:23.43\00:06:26.02 Today, while growing more and more secular 00:06:28.55\00:06:30.61 like much of Europe, the catholic church 00:06:30.64\00:06:32.88 is the state recognized religion. 00:06:32.91\00:06:34.88 Life in Lithuania is difficult 00:06:38.07\00:06:39.61 especially with the growing worldwide recession. 00:06:39.64\00:06:42.50 Unemployment is at all time highs. 00:06:42.53\00:06:44.62 It has some of the highest rates in all of Europe 00:06:44.65\00:06:47.27 for alcoholism, depression, and suicide. 00:06:47.30\00:06:50.22 In the cities, people are crowded 00:06:50.25\00:06:52.20 into these small block of flats 00:06:52.23\00:06:54.06 or what we call apartment house complexes. 00:06:54.09\00:06:56.65 Life in the country is difficult. 00:06:56.68\00:06:58.77 The people survive by growing food 00:06:58.80\00:07:00.43 and keeping it in store for the long winters. 00:07:00.46\00:07:03.94 On this particular trip, we're going to show you 00:07:03.97\00:07:05.86 what the Bible workers that are being sponsored 00:07:05.89\00:07:07.48 by Laymen Ministries are doing working 00:07:07.51\00:07:09.09 on a one-to-one with people in their homes. 00:07:09.12\00:07:11.11 Plus, we're gonna take you 00:07:11.14\00:07:12.17 to one of the poorest orphanages in Lithuania 00:07:12.20\00:07:14.63 and share with you how we are sharing clothing 00:07:14.66\00:07:18.19 and books and things like that with the children 00:07:18.22\00:07:20.31 and also with the administrative staff. 00:07:20.34\00:07:23.80 On this trip, we flew into Vilnius, 00:07:46.98\00:07:48.38 the capital and drove straight to the city of Kaunas to meet 00:07:48.41\00:07:51.45 the Bible workers and the church leaders 00:07:51.48\00:07:53.39 to hold our annual training session. 00:07:53.42\00:07:55.32 Our Bible workers and pastors are located 00:07:57.49\00:07:59.30 in every region of this country, 00:07:59.33\00:08:01.42 meetings like these bring new ideas 00:08:01.45\00:08:03.34 and encouragement to the workers. 00:08:03.37\00:08:05.29 The Bible workers cross various cultural boundaries 00:08:05.32\00:08:07.80 by also reaching Polish and Russian speaking people. 00:08:07.83\00:08:12.55 Pastor Arunus with his wife Neringa helped coordinate 00:08:12.58\00:08:15.14 Laymen Ministries work across Lithuania. 00:08:15.17\00:08:17.53 They live in the small city of Vilkaviskis, 00:08:17.56\00:08:20.01 besides being a fulltime pastor, 00:08:20.04\00:08:21.96 Arunas holds training seminars 00:08:21.99\00:08:23.31 for the Bible workers and keeps in contact 00:08:23.34\00:08:25.43 with them to provide encouragement and counsel. 00:08:25.46\00:08:28.12 They also organize summer youth meetings 00:08:28.15\00:08:29.93 and oversee the work in many of the orphanages. 00:08:29.96\00:08:32.70 Arunas also helped start this small church in the city 00:08:32.73\00:08:35.15 where there had been no previous Adventist presence. 00:08:35.18\00:08:38.57 We bought it several years ago 00:08:38.60\00:08:40.37 and we're remodeling every year 00:08:40.40\00:08:42.47 and last year we working again outside the church building 00:08:42.50\00:08:46.77 and we just painted it and the roof has changed 00:08:46.80\00:08:50.17 and the windows 00:08:50.20\00:08:51.58 and this year we are working inside the building. 00:08:51.61\00:08:54.73 The work is difficult as people are not very often 00:08:54.76\00:08:57.28 open to new ideas, 00:08:57.31\00:08:58.85 especially outside of catholic tradition. 00:08:58.88\00:09:02.52 After resting up, we drove 00:09:02.55\00:09:03.80 all the way up by the Lithuanian border 00:09:03.83\00:09:05.36 to the small village of Daunorai to meet 00:09:05.39\00:09:07.89 with two of our Bible workers named Julius and Roma. 00:09:07.92\00:09:10.92 They live on a small farm 00:09:10.95\00:09:12.34 which they use as their outpost 00:09:12.37\00:09:13.95 to reach the nearby cities. 00:09:13.98\00:09:15.54 They also use their farm as a quiet country retreat, 00:09:15.57\00:09:18.27 holding summer and winter programs 00:09:18.30\00:09:19.97 for some of the children from the nearby orphanage. 00:09:20.00\00:09:22.73 This is Julius and I used to say, Lulius, right? 00:09:22.76\00:09:26.11 Lulius in Lithuanian and Roma, 00:09:26.14\00:09:28.64 they have been Bible workers 00:09:28.67\00:09:29.70 for Laymen Ministries for eight years. 00:09:29.73\00:09:31.33 Roma has Bible studies 00:09:45.11\00:09:46.30 with some of the neighbors, such as this lady. 00:09:46.33\00:09:48.69 They also hold group Bible studies at their home 00:09:48.72\00:09:51.13 as well as in the nearby city of Birzai. 00:09:51.16\00:09:53.78 Roma shares with her neighbor friend every week 00:09:57.26\00:09:59.33 in a personal one-on-one Bible study. 00:09:59.36\00:10:01.72 The test of time has proven as to be 00:10:01.75\00:10:03.62 one of the most effective ways of leading a person to Christ 00:10:03.65\00:10:06.69 and making solid church members. 00:10:06.72\00:10:08.89 Our next stop is to visit another Bible worker 00:10:12.58\00:10:14.58 by the name of the Daiva. 00:10:14.61\00:10:16.41 Just got to Silale, we're at Daiva's house 00:10:16.44\00:10:19.28 and Daiva's been a Bible worker with us for-- 00:10:19.31\00:10:22.77 how many years now? 00:10:22.80\00:10:24.27 (speaking in foreign language) 00:10:24.30\00:10:27.85 Many years. Many years, she says. 00:10:27.88\00:10:29.98 We're gonna see what she's doing here 00:10:30.01\00:10:32.13 while we're in Silale 00:10:32.16\00:10:33.32 and then we'll be going to church here tomorrow morning. 00:10:33.35\00:10:36.52 Bible studies like these are happening 00:10:55.51\00:10:57.17 with Laymen Ministries Bible workers 00:10:57.20\00:10:58.64 all across Lithuania. 00:10:58.67\00:11:01.04 These Bible studies have brought about 00:11:01.07\00:11:02.41 hundreds of baptisms over the last 15 years 00:11:02.44\00:11:05.29 and have been one of the most effective 00:11:05.32\00:11:07.02 outreach methods in this country. 00:11:07.05\00:11:09.80 You know, they are just finishing up 00:11:09.83\00:11:11.11 their Bible study here and this is what it's all about. 00:11:11.14\00:11:14.26 It's the Bible workers coming into people's homes 00:11:14.29\00:11:16.62 and making friends with people and sharing the word of God, 00:11:16.65\00:11:19.91 they just got done-- 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.21 having a Bible study about the meaning of life 00:11:21.24\00:11:23.85 and the importance of the Christian experience 00:11:23.88\00:11:26.93 and having the relationship with Christ 00:11:26.96\00:11:28.64 and how it can give you life and it's really-- 00:11:28.67\00:11:32.79 this is really what it's all about, 00:11:32.82\00:11:34.41 coming here and making friends 00:11:34.44\00:11:35.99 and sharing the Bible with people. 00:11:36.02\00:11:39.16 Pastor Arunas, 00:12:03.79\00:12:04.82 who is the Director for Laymen Ministries 00:12:04.85\00:12:06.15 here in Lithuania had a unique experience 00:12:06.18\00:12:08.48 with this brother by the name Arunas, 00:12:08.51\00:12:10.55 so both of their names are Arunas. 00:12:10.58\00:12:13.17 But Arunas, when he was a young boy, 00:12:13.20\00:12:14.93 this Arunas, when he was a young boy, 00:12:14.96\00:12:16.48 he was an altar boy for the Catholic Church, 00:12:16.51\00:12:19.11 when he grew up, like many Lithuanian people, 00:12:19.14\00:12:21.06 he fell away from his faith 00:12:21.09\00:12:22.67 and stopped practicing Catholicism. 00:12:22.71\00:12:25.65 He became a building contractor 00:12:25.68\00:12:27.11 and he became married, he started traveling 00:12:27.14\00:12:29.46 back and forth to Norway working over there 00:12:29.49\00:12:31.87 and he wasn't happy with his life 00:12:31.90\00:12:33.28 because they were drinking and partying quite a bit 00:12:33.31\00:12:35.30 and he finally decided, he wanted to make some changes 00:12:35.33\00:12:37.88 so he stopped drinking alcohol 00:12:37.91\00:12:39.81 and his wife wasn't very happy with that 00:12:39.84\00:12:42.05 and so she started living a party lifestyle 00:12:42.08\00:12:45.44 and he started going away from that 00:12:45.47\00:12:47.25 and she finally left him and they went through a divorce. 00:12:47.28\00:12:49.79 He came back to Lithuania, shattered, 00:12:49.82\00:12:52.21 looking for work as a building contractor. 00:12:52.24\00:12:54.83 It turned out the Lord led him to a situation 00:12:54.86\00:12:57.06 where he was helping to remodel 00:12:57.09\00:12:58.82 a Seventh-day Adventist Church member's home 00:12:58.85\00:13:01.17 and one day he heard them over talking about religious things 00:13:01.20\00:13:04.24 and he started asking questions 00:13:04.27\00:13:05.62 and this led of course to these church members 00:13:05.65\00:13:07.97 giving him several books. 00:13:08.00\00:13:09.52 One book they gave to him was the book Great Controversy 00:13:09.55\00:13:12.88 and he read this book and he read several other books 00:13:12.91\00:13:15.00 and he started having questions, 00:13:15.03\00:13:16.24 so he called Pastor Arunas on the telephone and very soon 00:13:16.27\00:13:20.01 they started having Bible studies just like this. 00:13:20.04\00:13:22.79 Just last year in September when water was freezing cold, 00:13:22.82\00:13:27.37 he was baptized into Christ and then after that, 00:13:27.40\00:13:31.02 he started dedicating himself to helping Pastor Arunas 00:13:31.05\00:13:34.23 remodel the old church here in Vilkaviskis. 00:13:34.26\00:13:37.11 And this is what it's all about. 00:13:37.14\00:13:40.05 People leading people to Christ, 00:13:40.08\00:13:42.44 teaching to teach, so that other people too will in turn, 00:13:42.47\00:13:46.10 turn around and be able to share 00:13:46.13\00:13:47.80 what they've learned about Christ with somebody else. 00:13:47.83\00:13:50.67 After we left Daunorai, 00:13:53.55\00:13:54.90 we headed towards the city of Siauliai. 00:13:54.93\00:13:57.05 Along the way, we visited the historic Hill of Crosses. 00:13:57.08\00:14:00.78 The history behind the spot dates back to the 18th century 00:14:00.81\00:14:04.26 when people started placing crosses here 00:14:04.29\00:14:06.32 for those who were killed 00:14:06.35\00:14:07.38 in the uprisings against the Russians. 00:14:07.41\00:14:09.33 This hill took on more significance 00:14:09.36\00:14:11.51 after World War II when the occupying Russians 00:14:11.54\00:14:14.31 tried to bulldoze the hill at least three times, 00:14:14.34\00:14:17.08 the defiant Lithuanians used it 00:14:17.11\00:14:18.74 to demonstrate their allegiance 00:14:18.77\00:14:20.19 to their original identity, religion, and heritage. 00:14:20.22\00:14:23.76 Today the number of crosses is unknown 00:14:23.79\00:14:25.78 but estimations put it at over 50,000. 00:14:25.81\00:14:28.34 Our ministry has a long history 00:14:54.22\00:14:55.82 with this church in Siauliai as our workers, 00:14:55.85\00:14:58.21 both national and from America have had a big part 00:14:58.24\00:15:01.29 in helping this church become established. 00:15:01.32\00:15:04.08 We're in the city of Siauliai 00:15:04.11\00:15:05.41 and we're gonna go to church here this morning. 00:15:05.44\00:15:07.86 Siauliai church has had this house that was renovated 00:15:07.89\00:15:10.10 into a church for quite a number of years now. 00:15:10.13\00:15:12.38 This morning, the emphasis is going to be on the harvest, 00:15:12.41\00:15:15.78 yeah, because it's cold and it's October 00:15:15.81\00:15:17.76 and it's harvest time and one thing you'll notice 00:15:17.79\00:15:21.10 is that a lot of the people here dress nearly warm, 00:15:21.13\00:15:23.33 the church isn't heated very well. 00:15:23.36\00:15:26.47 Some of the places are heated pretty good 00:15:26.50\00:15:27.88 but there has been some places 00:15:27.91\00:15:29.14 where we go to church on Sabbath here where- 00:15:29.17\00:15:31.29 it's, you can see your breath inside the building 00:15:31.32\00:15:34.13 but they have a really active church here in Siauliai. 00:15:34.16\00:15:37.87 I'm looking forward to speaking to the people here today. 00:15:37.90\00:15:42.52 At first, it was in the living room 00:15:42.55\00:15:44.00 of the church member's house. 00:15:44.03\00:15:45.42 Later, the house was purchased, remodeled 00:15:45.45\00:15:47.69 and now is packed every Sabbath. 00:15:47.72\00:15:49.68 So when Christ comes for the great harvest, 00:15:49.71\00:15:52.39 what is he coming for? People? Yes. 00:15:52.42\00:15:55.39 So, all the people are gonna be harvesting. 00:15:55.42\00:15:58.66 This particular Sabbath day, 00:15:58.69\00:15:59.72 we're having a harvest celebration. 00:15:59.75\00:16:01.94 I spoke on the last great harvest 00:16:01.97\00:16:03.88 and how Christ works in our hearts 00:16:03.91\00:16:05.34 to have our characters come to fruition. 00:16:05.37\00:16:07.60 In preparation for that last great harvest, 00:16:07.63\00:16:10.35 it was great to reconnect with many old friends again. 00:16:10.38\00:16:13.43 What they are doing here is something very unusual, 00:16:20.36\00:16:22.41 after the church service, since this is the harvest time 00:16:22.44\00:16:24.61 they are giving food to all the church members. 00:16:24.64\00:16:27.57 We have a nice arrangement here with different kinds of breads 00:16:27.60\00:16:30.77 and some soy patties and tomatoes. 00:16:30.80\00:16:34.86 It's kind of different to be honest with you. 00:16:34.89\00:16:36.38 It's been five years since I was in Lithuania, 00:16:38.62\00:16:41.84 I missed a lot of things from here 00:16:41.87\00:16:43.23 but one of the things that I missed the most 00:16:43.26\00:16:45.28 is the food and the drink. 00:16:45.31\00:16:47.42 In all the countries we always traveled to, 00:16:51.46\00:16:52.77 we like to show you 00:16:52.80\00:16:53.83 the different types of cultural foods 00:16:53.86\00:16:55.38 that they prepare, and in Lithuania, 00:16:55.41\00:16:56.92 one of the most famous foods is the potato 00:16:56.95\00:17:01.04 and in fact it's very dear to my heart 00:17:01.07\00:17:03.14 because I'm from the state of Idaho in the good old USA 00:17:03.17\00:17:06.43 and everybody knows that-- lives to close to Idaho 00:17:06.46\00:17:08.73 that Idaho is famous for famous potatoes 00:17:08.76\00:17:12.20 and in Lithuania, they cook 00:17:12.23\00:17:14.57 zillion different types of potato dishes 00:17:14.60\00:17:16.93 but she's gonna be preparing today a dish called cepelinai. 00:17:16.96\00:17:21.92 Now, I think that it really should called zeppelini. 00:17:21.95\00:17:25.64 For years I always pronounced it that 00:17:25.67\00:17:27.43 because I thought that the finished product 00:17:27.46\00:17:29.22 kind of looked like a zeppelin, 00:17:29.25\00:17:30.54 now you've probably seen those big German balloons 00:17:30.57\00:17:32.71 you know, they were called zeppelins. 00:17:32.74\00:17:34.30 Well, the finished product is similar to that 00:17:34.33\00:17:36.46 and it's quite a, an elaborate process. 00:17:36.49\00:17:38.60 One of the first things that they do apparently 00:17:45.04\00:17:47.20 is they peel potatoes and she soaks them in some water. 00:17:47.23\00:17:50.85 It's a unique combination because she's gonna 00:17:50.88\00:17:54.31 mix together raw potatoes and boiled potatoes, 00:17:54.34\00:18:01.41 they're like mashed potatoes, you'll see there. 00:18:01.44\00:18:03.56 Here you have some soft cheese. 00:18:03.59\00:18:05.60 This cheese is a, yeah it's-- what they call fresh cheese? 00:18:05.63\00:18:09.21 It's next step up from cottage cheese. 00:18:09.24\00:18:12.51 It's kind of a firm, soft cheese, 00:18:12.54\00:18:14.09 kind of like feta cheese but with no seasoning in it. 00:18:14.12\00:18:16.86 This is gonna go inside the zeppelini. 00:18:16.89\00:18:20.00 So you'll see that she is doing this, 00:18:20.03\00:18:21.69 she's gonna mix this cooked mashed potatoes together 00:18:21.72\00:18:24.58 with raw grated potatoes and a potato puree-- 00:18:24.61\00:18:27.57 which she'll be using a machine for it a little bit. 00:18:27.60\00:18:32.08 So you can see it's just raw potatoes 00:18:32.11\00:18:33.96 that are just whizzed up kind of almost like 00:18:33.99\00:18:35.75 what we'd use in a champion juicer in the States. 00:18:35.78\00:18:40.25 Interesting. 00:18:40.28\00:18:41.88 The next step Neningya is using here 00:18:41.91\00:18:43.88 as she's taking that, 00:18:43.91\00:18:45.68 the raw potatoes that was made into a puree 00:18:45.71\00:18:49.00 and she's putting it to like, piece of cheese cloth 00:18:49.03\00:18:51.09 and straining all the liquid out of it 00:18:51.12\00:18:53.35 so she's ending up with 00:18:53.38\00:18:54.61 kind of like a starchylooking material. 00:18:54.64\00:18:57.33 It's just raw potato starch. 00:18:57.36\00:19:00.00 So this is potato juices in here 00:19:00.03\00:19:02.70 and I'm gonna have John our cameraman demonstrate 00:19:02.73\00:19:07.78 drinking this stuff. I'm not gonna do it. 00:19:07.81\00:19:11.11 Okay, here it goes. 00:19:11.14\00:19:12.17 This is raw potato juice. 00:19:23.10\00:19:26.57 It's got to be at least 37 different nutrients. 00:19:26.60\00:19:30.58 What do you think? It's good. 00:19:30.61\00:19:33.97 Are you serious? 00:19:34.00\00:19:35.65 Might need a little salt but other than that, it's good. 00:19:35.68\00:19:39.12 It's good. 00:19:39.15\00:19:42.12 Now after these things are all rolled together 00:19:42.15\00:19:44.66 with the stuffing inside, 00:19:44.69\00:19:46.39 she carefully places them in boiling water, 00:19:46.42\00:19:48.54 so in a sense what they are is a potato dumpling. 00:19:48.57\00:19:52.29 But it's the most unique potato dumpling 00:19:52.32\00:19:53.99 I've ever seen in my life. 00:19:54.02\00:19:56.21 She's mixing up a special sauce 00:19:56.24\00:19:58.57 and has like some butter and some salt, 00:19:58.60\00:20:01.05 some different things and uses sparingly 00:20:01.08\00:20:03.23 on top of your potato zeppelini and put it on that plate. 00:20:03.26\00:20:08.39 Some people like just I've mentioned to you, 00:20:11.81\00:20:13.41 they take oil and they just dump a ton of oil on it. 00:20:13.44\00:20:16.07 She's using a little bit of butter sparingly with some salt 00:20:16.10\00:20:19.00 and little bit of sour cream 00:20:19.03\00:20:21.08 and that will make 00:20:21.11\00:20:22.17 a nice flavored sauce for the top of it. 00:20:22.20\00:20:24.52 This is the finished product. This is the zeppelini. 00:20:24.55\00:20:27.72 Cepelinai, they call it. 00:20:27.75\00:20:29.05 It's delicious. Really good. 00:20:33.29\00:20:35.74 Now, I tell you what, 00:20:35.77\00:20:36.80 two of these will stick to your ribs. 00:20:36.83\00:20:38.86 Okay, we're gonna go over 00:20:42.06\00:20:43.74 and meet with the director from one of the orphanages 00:20:43.77\00:20:46.10 where Lloyd Nipal has stuff to take over 00:20:46.13\00:20:47.60 to the orphanages today and when we meet the director, 00:20:47.63\00:20:50.66 we're gonna over to that market place 00:20:50.69\00:20:52.37 and buy some clothes and things. 00:20:52.40\00:20:53.90 The next morning, we headed south about 40 miles 00:20:53.93\00:20:56.05 to the small city of Siminus 00:20:56.08\00:20:58.06 where we met with some of the ladies 00:20:58.09\00:20:59.26 who work at the local orphanage. 00:20:59.29\00:21:03.59 In the larger cities, the orphanages usually 00:21:03.62\00:21:05.40 receive some kind of help from other European countries 00:21:05.43\00:21:08.71 while the smaller orphanages out in the country 00:21:08.74\00:21:11.41 are in a desperate situation. 00:21:11.44\00:21:13.47 After meeting with the director and the administrative staff, 00:21:17.01\00:21:19.65 it was decided these kids needed warm winter clothing, 00:21:19.68\00:21:22.63 shoes, and other basic clothes. 00:21:22.66\00:21:24.64 Together, we went with some of the workers 00:21:24.67\00:21:26.48 on a shopping spree to get what they needed. 00:21:26.51\00:21:28.63 These ladies are really into this orphanage, 00:21:46.25\00:21:48.40 if you watch the expression on them 00:21:48.43\00:21:50.01 as they are purchasing things, 00:21:50.04\00:21:51.63 one girl is going, oh, very good, 00:21:51.66\00:21:53.78 it's great, it's good, you know, 00:21:53.81\00:21:54.85 because she's actually able to get some clothing for the kids, 00:21:54.88\00:21:57.68 they have been having a real problem 00:21:57.71\00:21:59.52 with being able to have quality clothing 00:21:59.55\00:22:01.31 and to be able to have just socks 00:22:01.34\00:22:03.41 and underwear and things like that, 00:22:03.44\00:22:04.96 so it's nice to see that the administrative staff 00:22:04.99\00:22:09.13 are really into the children 00:22:09.16\00:22:11.26 and they are not doing this just as a job 00:22:11.29\00:22:12.87 but they are doing 'cause their hearts are into it. 00:22:12.90\00:22:15.16 It's interesting 'cause this lady 00:22:37.57\00:22:38.95 who is actually giving us about five coats for free 00:22:38.98\00:22:42.27 and she's crying, I don't know if you're noticing this or not, 00:22:42.30\00:22:44.77 but she's actually got tears in her eyes 00:22:44.80\00:22:46.45 saying that she wants to help out. 00:22:46.48\00:22:47.93 Apparently her son was recently killed 00:22:53.19\00:22:54.96 with some kind of incident 00:22:54.99\00:22:56.25 and she's got some problems at home 00:22:56.28\00:22:57.95 and apparently she just got a real sensitive 00:22:57.98\00:22:59.91 and kinder heart and she wants to help out 00:22:59.94\00:23:02.03 so she's donating a lot of these coats 00:23:02.06\00:23:04.54 and then we're gonna buy something or two. 00:23:04.57\00:23:06.02 Basically he's gonna come back to visit this lady again 00:23:10.73\00:23:13.23 to give some literature to her. 00:23:13.26\00:23:15.85 Okay, what's next on the list? 00:23:15.88\00:23:17.96 You get this, we're not only just buying clothes for orphans 00:23:28.00\00:23:30.57 but we're giving them spiritual literature 00:23:30.60\00:23:32.36 and this is a real open door 00:23:32.39\00:23:34.69 for being able to share Christ in the orphanages, 00:23:34.72\00:23:36.97 this is with the administrative people and the kids there. 00:23:37.00\00:23:40.98 In this particular orphanage, 00:23:41.01\00:23:42.11 they have children who are all the way up 00:23:42.14\00:23:44.05 to the age of 21 years of age 00:23:44.08\00:23:45.30 between the full ages of four, six, 00:23:45.33\00:23:47.42 all the way to 21 years of age. 00:23:47.45\00:23:49.92 I'm happy. I'm happy. Good. 00:24:00.81\00:24:02.55 Back in 1995, 00:24:09.53\00:24:11.06 two missionaries who worked with Laymen Ministries, 00:24:11.09\00:24:13.38 Joshua Miller and Jonathan Peeble 00:24:13.41\00:24:15.19 saw how destitute things were 00:24:15.22\00:24:16.88 in the orphanage by where they lived. 00:24:16.91\00:24:19.02 They soon started searching out other poor orphanages 00:24:19.05\00:24:21.18 around the country. 00:24:21.21\00:24:22.30 Laymen Ministries made this an extension of our project, 00:24:27.65\00:24:30.25 providing clothing, shoes, and spiritual food 00:24:30.28\00:24:33.05 for their souls, as well. 00:24:33.08\00:24:34.20 To this day, we've continued to be involved 00:24:37.73\00:24:39.44 with the ministry to these poor orphanages. 00:24:39.47\00:24:42.13 Small orphanages located in the more rural areas 00:24:47.43\00:24:49.76 such as this one struggle just to keep the heat turned on. 00:24:49.79\00:24:54.09 The director told me they would literally not turn the heat on 00:24:54.12\00:24:56.50 until the 1st of November. 00:24:56.53\00:24:58.50 While we were there in October, 00:24:58.53\00:24:59.56 the building was a chilly 55 degrees inside. 00:24:59.59\00:25:05.65 The children lacked basic warm clothing, 00:25:05.68\00:25:07.94 under garments, and food was limited as well. 00:25:07.97\00:25:10.84 Children and staff also received from us Bibles, 00:25:16.47\00:25:19.27 books, and Bible study materials. 00:25:19.30\00:25:21.40 The kids at this orphanage are the outcasts of society. 00:25:24.37\00:25:27.47 Most here are handicapped, born with birth defects, 00:25:27.50\00:25:30.40 or have some emotional issues from poor 00:25:30.43\00:25:32.67 and even abusive parenting. 00:25:32.70\00:25:35.20 Many orphans are here because of their parents 00:25:35.23\00:25:37.35 who are alcoholic or simply have abandoned them. 00:25:37.38\00:25:41.46 The director Mrs. Elena Downiski showed us 00:25:43.98\00:25:47.13 the giving tree of people who have donated before. 00:25:47.16\00:25:49.81 On the wall was Joshua and Inga Miller's name 00:25:49.84\00:25:52.01 and Pastor Arunas as well, all Laymen Ministries workers. 00:25:52.04\00:25:58.49 As we walked around the facility, 00:25:58.52\00:26:00.02 I was impressed that while they were poor, 00:26:00.05\00:26:02.22 the building was kept clean and orderly. 00:26:02.25\00:26:04.74 They had classrooms 00:26:04.77\00:26:05.80 where they engaged in special activities for the children. 00:26:05.83\00:26:10.44 All the children were very happy that we came 00:26:10.47\00:26:13.11 and all showed a great enthusiasm. 00:26:13.14\00:26:17.68 When it came time to distribute some of the items, 00:26:17.71\00:26:19.75 the kids became very excited. 00:26:19.78\00:26:22.13 Other items were distributed in a more discretionary manner. 00:26:22.16\00:26:25.12 Today, Laymen Ministries continues 00:26:37.76\00:26:39.86 to support Bible workers and Pastors, 00:26:39.89\00:26:42.33 publishing literature, and orphanage outreach. 00:26:42.36\00:26:45.14 We have a vision of expanding into radio 00:26:45.17\00:26:47.38 and television broadcast 00:26:47.41\00:26:48.92 as well as seminars held across the country. 00:26:48.95\00:26:52.23 Please pray with us for this little country of Lithuania. 00:26:52.26\00:26:55.37
