Missions is the absolute adventure. 00:00:12.54\00:00:16.19 So the word is adventures. 00:00:16.22\00:00:18.80 Welcome to another youth in mission's program. 00:00:38.40\00:00:40.82 I'm standing here outside of Laymen ministries 00:00:40.85\00:00:42.69 of new mission headquarters in the town of Mamburao 00:00:42.72\00:00:45.50 and the island of Mindoro 00:00:45.53\00:00:47.63 in the Northern part of Philippines. 00:00:47.66\00:00:49.35 In this program we're gonna be interviewing young people 00:00:49.38\00:00:51.68 who have been coming over with the Laymen Ministries 00:00:51.71\00:00:53.73 youth in mission's program. 00:00:53.76\00:00:55.22 A lot of these young people 00:00:55.25\00:00:56.35 or most all of these young people 00:00:56.38\00:00:58.15 go out into the far western side of the island of Mindoro 00:00:58.18\00:01:01.11 and are working in the villages teaching school. 00:01:01.14\00:01:04.13 Of course one of the reasons 00:01:04.16\00:01:05.19 we're putting this video together 00:01:05.22\00:01:06.34 is 'cause we are hoping that may be 00:01:06.37\00:01:07.65 you might want to get interested in missions 00:01:07.68\00:01:09.50 and like to come over 00:01:09.53\00:01:10.80 and participate in a project like this 00:01:10.83\00:01:13.13 or may be some other project with some other organization 00:01:13.16\00:01:15.22 but, it's been just a tremendous blessing 00:01:15.25\00:01:17.72 to see how these young people interact with the native people 00:01:17.75\00:01:21.19 in this remote part of this island 00:01:21.22\00:01:23.27 and the results of their interaction 00:01:23.30\00:01:25.54 upon the young people 00:01:25.57\00:01:26.89 and when they get done with the mission service 00:01:26.92\00:01:29.50 the excitement that they have and how they-- 00:01:29.53\00:01:31.71 most of them want to stay here 00:01:31.74\00:01:33.05 or come back next year in fact 00:01:33.08\00:01:34.44 some of the young people this year 00:01:34.47\00:01:35.77 are actually coming back next year 00:01:35.80\00:01:37.30 and teach a second year. 00:01:37.33\00:01:39.02 One of the questions that we asked 00:01:39.05\00:01:40.29 some of the young people is, 00:01:40.32\00:01:41.35 why did you want to come here in the first place 00:01:41.38\00:01:43.15 and teach in a remote jungle village 00:01:43.18\00:01:44.61 with Laymen Ministries, 00:01:44.64\00:01:45.82 their answers were very interesting. 00:01:45.85\00:01:47.69 My name is Joel Marshall and I'm 26 00:01:49.31\00:01:54.23 and I live in the Gold coast in Australia. 00:01:54.26\00:01:57.29 Hi, my name is Trina. 00:01:57.32\00:01:58.43 I am student missionary here in Pinagbayanan, 00:01:58.46\00:02:03.28 I'm 19 years old 00:02:03.31\00:02:05.47 physical therapy major at college 00:02:05.50\00:02:07.55 and I just took a year off 00:02:07.58\00:02:09.16 to do something little bit different 00:02:09.19\00:02:10.42 and I'm enjoying it. 00:02:10.45\00:02:11.97 I really did not have a clue of where I wanted to work 00:02:12.00\00:02:15.83 and the website just said 00:02:15.86\00:02:17.92 where do you want to work in the world 00:02:17.95\00:02:19.51 and I just put down some random country 00:02:19.54\00:02:22.31 and got a email back saying we don't work in that country. 00:02:22.34\00:02:26.48 Okay, my name is Kelsey Nelson and I'm from California. 00:02:26.51\00:02:31.21 I work as a teacher of missionary in Pinagbayanan. 00:02:31.24\00:02:35.01 They recommended the Philippines, 00:02:35.04\00:02:38.24 and I was happy to come here. 00:02:38.27\00:02:40.44 I have known about Laymen Ministries 00:02:40.47\00:02:42.37 for quite a long time 00:02:42.40\00:02:44.08 but I never even imagined coming here and working. 00:02:44.11\00:02:48.31 My name is Leroy Abrahams. 00:02:48.34\00:02:51.22 I'm from Atlanta, Georgia. 00:02:51.25\00:02:53.92 I'm 18 years old. 00:02:53.95\00:02:55.67 I work in the village of Agbalite. 00:02:55.70\00:02:58.69 Honestly when I came, I had -- some one had told me oh, 00:02:58.72\00:03:01.45 you'll probably be living in like a hut house 00:03:01.48\00:03:03.19 made out of native material dirt floor. 00:03:03.22\00:03:05.63 And so when I came to the village I'm like wow, 00:03:05.66\00:03:07.75 they had like flowers here and like on the walk way 00:03:07.78\00:03:10.35 as like decorated kind of 00:03:10.38\00:03:11.83 and like I came to the house and like whoa, seen a floor. 00:03:11.86\00:03:14.67 So, I was kind of like in reverse like okay, 00:03:14.70\00:03:16.90 it's better than I thought. 00:03:16.93\00:03:17.96 So really wasn't that bad for me. 00:03:17.99\00:03:19.93 And there is -- I mean there is little things 00:03:19.96\00:03:21.70 like you get used to kind of washing your clothes by hand 00:03:21.73\00:03:23.74 and oh, man this stain is really bad, you know, 00:03:23.77\00:03:25.92 like is it really worth it sometimes like okay, okay, 00:03:25.95\00:03:29.22 I will step some more I will step some more. 00:03:29.25\00:03:30.67 But it's really like after a month or so 00:03:30.70\00:03:33.61 you are kind get used to, it's just normal like, 00:03:33.64\00:03:35.19 every one else is that way and if they can do it you can. 00:03:35.22\00:03:39.23 I had gone to the general youth conference 00:03:39.26\00:03:41.41 in Baltimore, Maryland 00:03:41.44\00:03:42.72 and picked up a DVD by Laymen Ministries 00:03:42.75\00:03:45.40 and watched it several times 00:03:45.43\00:03:47.81 but it never really sunk in to me 00:03:47.84\00:03:49.94 that I could do that. 00:03:49.97\00:03:51.54 But I pulled it out again I watched it with my family 00:03:51.57\00:03:54.13 and my mom said oh, so your friend's going 00:03:54.16\00:03:57.38 and I said yeah she is deciding to send in her application. 00:03:57.41\00:04:01.20 And my mom kind of said well, would you like to go 00:04:01.23\00:04:06.62 and I said well, yeah, 00:04:06.65\00:04:08.56 I think that will be really neat. 00:04:08.59\00:04:10.17 So I'm schooling the last six months 00:04:10.20\00:04:12.02 between January of '07 and May finish up my high school years 00:04:12.05\00:04:17.53 and I was thinking about 00:04:17.56\00:04:19.09 getting involved with some kind of mission. 00:04:19.12\00:04:22.05 So at first I was thinking of extreme mission 00:04:22.08\00:04:24.78 but on Hope channel 00:04:24.81\00:04:27.15 Laymen Ministries has a little show 00:04:27.18\00:04:29.77 that kind of discusses some of the activities taking place 00:04:29.80\00:04:32.78 here in the Philippines. 00:04:32.81\00:04:34.42 So my mother convinced me to just send an application 00:04:34.45\00:04:38.63 to be a teacher here. 00:04:38.66\00:04:41.04 So I sent my application and a little bit later 00:04:41.07\00:04:44.10 I was wondering what became of it 00:04:44.13\00:04:45.97 because I did not see or hear of any reply. 00:04:46.00\00:04:50.17 So, I called Jeff and he said oh, Leroy, 00:04:50.20\00:04:53.14 we kind of put your application on the back burner 00:04:53.17\00:04:56.62 because you said you wanted to go like 00:04:56.65\00:04:58.65 six months from now, like next January. 00:04:58.68\00:05:02.24 He said, but if you want to 00:05:02.27\00:05:04.01 we're sending out a group of Missionaries 00:05:04.04\00:05:06.47 in a few days in a few weeks 00:05:06.50\00:05:08.36 because at the time it was like almost May 00:05:08.39\00:05:11.74 around the time when the first missionaries 00:05:11.77\00:05:13.78 were about to come to the villages. 00:05:13.81\00:05:16.49 So I said oh, that's interesting 00:05:16.52\00:05:18.43 but well, may be I wont be able to come in by mid May 00:05:18.46\00:05:21.94 but I would like to come may be in June sometime. 00:05:21.97\00:05:24.65 He said okay, well, we're also considering 00:05:24.68\00:05:26.82 two other student missionaries as well. 00:05:26.85\00:05:29.81 So, I got online and printed out an application 00:05:29.84\00:05:32.31 and sent it in right about the same time as my friend did 00:05:32.34\00:05:35.37 and we were both in between high school and college 00:05:35.40\00:05:39.24 trying to decide what we are going to do next 00:05:39.27\00:05:40.86 and we waited and we talked 00:05:40.89\00:05:43.74 and pretty soon we heard back from Laymen ministries 00:05:43.77\00:05:47.21 and the process started from there. 00:05:47.24\00:05:48.98 First time that I found out about Laymen Ministries 00:05:49.01\00:05:52.49 was through satellite TV, watching 3ABN 00:05:52.52\00:05:57.26 and I just saw, Jeff in the interviews 00:05:57.29\00:06:04.47 that he was doing and just the ministry 00:06:04.50\00:06:08.50 and when I started to get interested 00:06:08.53\00:06:11.18 in doing missionary work 00:06:11.21\00:06:15.06 when they popped into my mind this is an organization 00:06:15.09\00:06:18.76 that I could contact 00:06:18.79\00:06:20.73 and so I looked on the website 00:06:20.76\00:06:25.49 and just applied and that's basically 00:06:25.52\00:06:28.44 how I came to be here. 00:06:28.47\00:06:29.63 I heard about Laymen Ministries from my school 00:06:29.66\00:06:32.66 and the missions department. 00:06:32.69\00:06:34.39 I just stepped out there and I was like okay, 00:06:34.42\00:06:36.49 what is there to do I want to do something different 00:06:36.52\00:06:38.72 and I want to learn about different culture. 00:06:38.75\00:06:40.79 I want to -- I want to go see what God can do with me. 00:06:40.82\00:06:44.37 I want to be more useful, I want to go to somewhere 00:06:44.40\00:06:46.45 where Christianity isn't all that prevalent, 00:06:46.48\00:06:49.92 just to see what it's like. 00:06:49.95\00:06:52.10 In America so easy to get focused on a Christian world 00:06:52.13\00:06:55.68 and converting may be to Adventism, 00:06:55.71\00:06:58.62 to Baptist, to this to that. 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.37 But here it's different like, 00:07:00.40\00:07:03.00 there are these people with superstitious beliefs 00:07:03.03\00:07:05.39 and different backgrounds that is totally different. 00:07:05.42\00:07:09.09 I wanted to see what it's like 00:07:09.12\00:07:10.44 and it makes God more real to me 00:07:10.47\00:07:13.69 to be here and explain to kind of, 00:07:13.72\00:07:15.47 some of these kids for the first time 00:07:15.50\00:07:16.63 some of the Bible stories that they just never heard before. 00:07:16.66\00:07:19.12 And when it becomes more real to them 00:07:19.15\00:07:21.50 it becomes more real to me too. 00:07:21.53\00:07:23.25 And it's just -- 00:07:23.28\00:07:24.46 it's a unforgettable experience being here, I really enjoy it. 00:07:24.49\00:07:27.86 Being here on the Philippines 00:07:27.89\00:07:29.66 really helps you break out of your shell. 00:07:29.69\00:07:33.86 Helps you do things that you would never imagine 00:07:33.89\00:07:36.91 that you would do. 00:07:36.94\00:07:37.97 When I first came to the village and we got off the boat. 00:07:38.00\00:07:42.36 There was a lot of students -- 00:07:42.39\00:07:44.35 not over the real lot of students 00:07:44.38\00:07:45.78 but there is some students there to meet us 00:07:45.81\00:07:47.77 and some of the teachers. 00:07:47.80\00:07:50.15 And I remember being introduced to people 00:07:50.18\00:07:53.55 and I told my-- 00:07:53.58\00:07:54.61 I was told my roommate was going to be Venus 00:07:54.64\00:07:57.13 and I had no idea really what she look like or anything 00:07:57.16\00:08:00.13 and as I was shaking people's hands 00:08:00.16\00:08:02.67 I met a girl name, Venus 00:08:02.70\00:08:04.13 and for some reason the first thought that came to my mind is, 00:08:04.16\00:08:07.86 this is one of my students 00:08:07.89\00:08:09.62 because she just looked like a student to me 00:08:09.65\00:08:12.31 and then I got introduced to some of the other people 00:08:12.34\00:08:14.89 and then it hit me. 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.03 That was my roommate's name. 00:08:16.06\00:08:17.39 So I went back and I said, hi my name is Kelsey 00:08:17.42\00:08:20.22 and said oh, it's good to meet you 00:08:20.25\00:08:22.74 we walked back to our house and. 00:08:22.77\00:08:24.43 Well, this is my hut, not really a hut 00:08:24.46\00:08:27.33 but this is my hut. 00:08:27.36\00:08:28.44 This is my room here in the front 00:08:28.47\00:08:30.50 it wasn't supposed to be room, 00:08:30.53\00:08:31.58 it was supposed to be a classroom 00:08:31.61\00:08:33.39 but since my roommate and I moved in we said, 00:08:33.42\00:08:36.27 why can't myself in one room so, this is my room here 00:08:36.30\00:08:39.86 and this is down the hall my roommates room. 00:08:39.89\00:08:44.31 This is my small kitchen, um usually we use gas stove 00:08:50.51\00:08:54.53 but we are out right now so we cook outside on charcoal 00:08:54.56\00:08:57.90 and this is our CR which is almost as big as our bedroom 00:08:57.93\00:09:01.65 which is nice. 00:09:01.68\00:09:02.86 You have to collect your own water 00:09:02.89\00:09:04.03 but we have a house and we just fill it up. 00:09:04.06\00:09:06.83 So what's this whole mess right here? 00:09:06.86\00:09:08.64 This is our electricity, this is our solar, 00:09:08.67\00:09:11.08 our battery, our lives, every thing all the wires 00:09:11.11\00:09:15.78 and it's pretty good right now. 00:09:15.81\00:09:16.98 Well, this is what we call the dirty kitchen 00:09:30.68\00:09:32.83 which is burning up a little bit. 00:09:32.86\00:09:34.56 So I make my rice and stuff sometime. 00:09:34.59\00:09:36.98 Have you eaten much burnt rice? 00:09:37.01\00:09:38.62 Yeah, sometimes I forget, 00:09:38.65\00:09:40.38 I almost Good. 00:11:57.47\00:11:58.56 It's really nice it really promotes 00:11:58.59\00:11:59.99 unity in--teachers. 00:12:00.02\00:12:02.42 Okay, well we are going to get down to the hut 00:12:02.45\00:12:04.56 pretty dirty here, show me your bathroom. 00:12:04.59\00:12:06.94 Explain to me little bit about your CR, 00:12:06.97\00:12:10.05 what they call it comfort room. 00:12:10.08\00:12:11.35 Yeah, this is the CR, it's very simple. 00:12:11.38\00:12:16.42 This is bathroom where you relieve yourself, 00:12:16.45\00:12:18.31 at the same time take a bath. 00:12:18.34\00:12:19.96 How do you take a bath here? 00:12:19.99\00:12:21.39 This is a stumper. 00:12:21.42\00:12:22.54 I don't see a shower head. 00:12:22.57\00:12:23.80 Oh no, no shower head. 00:12:23.83\00:12:26.03 we will use this like this, 00:12:26.06\00:12:29.22 this cold water, stump on your head. 00:12:29.25\00:12:31.45 The first time you did that was it like -- 00:12:31.48\00:12:33.29 what kind of experience? 00:12:33.32\00:12:34.57 It was very miserable. I was very hesitant. 00:12:34.60\00:12:38.27 Yeah, was very difficult for me 00:12:38.30\00:12:40.49 but I just got used to it. 00:12:40.52\00:12:41.81 It starts your day out now right? 00:12:41.84\00:12:43.56 Like shocks you into wakes situation. 00:12:43.59\00:12:47.14 Yeah, it's kind of chilling experience 00:12:47.17\00:12:49.08 but yeah, I kind of like it now since it's pretty hot outside, 00:12:49.11\00:12:52.18 It's nice to get some cool water 00:12:52.21\00:12:54.00 but before, especially if it's really raining 00:12:54.03\00:12:57.32 sometimes it gets a little cool 00:12:57.35\00:12:59.12 and then plus to take a bath like this 00:12:59.15\00:13:01.48 it's really, it's really rough. 00:13:01.51\00:13:03.12 Every year when young people come here 00:13:08.86\00:13:10.76 they always have some kind of really funny 00:13:10.79\00:13:14.00 and interesting thing that happens to them. 00:13:14.03\00:13:16.47 Such as what happen in this situation. 00:13:16.50\00:13:18.40 So I remember when I first came 00:13:18.43\00:13:19.82 I used to be really afraid of snakes 00:13:19.85\00:13:22.79 and my house had plenty of them 00:13:22.82\00:13:25.43 had more snakes, had so many. 00:13:25.46\00:13:29.08 They started out may be really small 00:13:29.11\00:13:31.63 then they ranged anywhere from like 00:13:31.66\00:13:33.15 one foot to three feet or so. 00:13:33.18\00:13:35.73 There is one instance where I was using the CR, 00:13:35.76\00:13:39.63 the toilet is pretty low and so as I was sitting down, 00:13:39.66\00:13:43.15 I looked up I saw there is a snake 00:13:43.18\00:13:45.37 coming through the cogon roof. 00:13:45.40\00:13:48.26 I was like, oh no it was quite a large to see it, 00:13:48.29\00:13:51.80 oh no a snake. 00:13:51.83\00:13:53.64 So, so I ran out 00:13:53.67\00:13:56.31 and I called once again my friendly neighbor, 00:13:56.34\00:14:00.53 so afraid to come over 00:14:00.56\00:14:01.84 and he insisted that we use a stick to get the snake 00:14:01.87\00:14:05.09 but by that time we got the stick 00:14:05.12\00:14:06.97 the snake went through the house. 00:14:07.00\00:14:08.77 My mam and mom they haven't quite perfected yet. 00:14:08.80\00:14:12.14 We're working with it. 00:14:12.17\00:14:13.26 There's a few students who do say, 00:14:13.29\00:14:14.77 mam but the others laugh at them 00:14:14.80\00:14:16.10 because they are so used to mom, mom, mom. 00:14:16.13\00:14:18.99 They've been saying it forever even other coworkers, 00:14:19.02\00:14:21.75 all the time the same mom, instead of mam. 00:14:21.78\00:14:25.37 But, until they get used to it, 00:14:25.40\00:14:27.40 some of them once they hear it like - 00:14:27.43\00:14:29.55 once they know that they should be saying mam, 00:14:29.58\00:14:31.65 then like, oh they are so funny and sometime its really weird, 00:14:31.68\00:14:35.21 because they will be like mom, mom, mom, me, me, 00:14:35.24\00:14:37.87 mom, me, mom, me and pretty soon it sounds like mommy, 00:14:37.90\00:14:40.83 I am like no, no, no don't call me mommy 00:14:40.86\00:14:42.81 like mam is enough, but yeah. 00:14:42.84\00:14:45.89 Some of the other things that stand out are 00:14:45.92\00:14:47.55 when I try and do things that they do 00:14:47.58\00:14:49.72 like go to the village and pound rice 00:14:49.75\00:14:52.83 and I start pounding rice and one of the fathers 00:14:52.86\00:14:56.19 will come over and say oh, you are kinder student. 00:14:56.22\00:15:00.45 Your pounding is like kinder and the kids laugh 00:15:00.48\00:15:03.65 and yeah, I've never pounded rice before 00:15:03.68\00:15:06.49 but just to let them see me experiment new things 00:15:06.52\00:15:11.02 and that I don't do so well the first time either. 00:15:11.05\00:15:14.06 It's just fun to be with them 00:15:14.09\00:15:16.12 and experience things they do every day. 00:15:16.15\00:15:18.45 With most of the young people that have come here 00:15:18.48\00:15:20.23 we have seen that being involved with mission service 00:15:20.26\00:15:22.56 has been a tremendous boost for them spiritually. 00:15:22.59\00:15:25.15 We asked some of the young student missionaries, 00:15:25.18\00:15:27.79 you know, how did they see God working in their life 00:15:27.82\00:15:29.91 to some of the experience 00:15:29.94\00:15:31.18 that they had teaching the school year. 00:15:31.21\00:15:33.59 Trusted in God that's the only thing. 00:15:33.62\00:15:36.24 It's mainly just trust in God, 00:15:36.27\00:15:38.08 God becomes reality in here. 00:15:38.11\00:15:40.21 That's, that's the major thing 00:15:40.24\00:15:42.08 you can learn from this experience 00:15:42.11\00:15:44.98 that you may not feel like you have the capability, 00:15:45.01\00:15:48.20 you may not feel like you have the strength, 00:15:48.23\00:15:49.78 but once you come out here, once you meet the kids, 00:15:49.81\00:15:52.78 once you look into their eyes just seems like 00:15:52.81\00:15:55.88 the ideas just come that God just works with you. 00:15:55.91\00:15:58.89 It's really, it's really matured me 00:15:58.92\00:16:00.84 in ways that's really kind of difficult to express. 00:16:00.87\00:16:05.32 I think it's driven me more to depend on God, 00:16:05.35\00:16:07.55 like before God's there, now you have to have God 00:16:07.58\00:16:12.18 like you're always doing things 00:16:12.21\00:16:14.42 that you don't really expect to be doing, 00:16:14.45\00:16:17.00 oh by the way you are giving a Sermon today, 00:16:17.03\00:16:19.24 like it's okay, like you can do it. 00:16:19.27\00:16:21.98 If you're having like a personal relationship with God 00:16:22.01\00:16:25.18 you can just share with others in a plain simple way like, 00:16:25.21\00:16:28.39 this is what God's doing it doesn't have to be like, 00:16:28.42\00:16:31.08 okay here is my three points and his report 00:16:31.11\00:16:34.57 and yeah, this is a doctrinal approach 00:16:34.60\00:16:38.05 and it's all about being a friend with the students 00:16:38.08\00:16:42.46 with God with people around you 00:16:42.49\00:16:45.06 and I don't know 00:16:45.09\00:16:48.11 that's what made the difference for me. 00:16:48.14\00:16:49.99 The kids were just very forgiving and very loving. 00:17:09.10\00:17:12.89 I was so surprised, hugs everyday. 00:17:12.92\00:17:15.72 And I taught them for two months 00:17:15.75\00:17:18.81 and we had a rotation of teachers 00:17:18.84\00:17:20.71 and I got switched to another grade, 00:17:20.74\00:17:25.38 second grade 00:17:25.41\00:17:26.70 and definitely it was a lot of different 00:17:26.73\00:17:29.07 than teaching the kinder, 00:17:29.10\00:17:30.13 the kinder were just learning to read 00:17:30.16\00:17:32.50 verses the second graders, 00:17:32.53\00:17:34.15 you know, they already can read 00:17:34.18\00:17:35.34 and it's pretty easy to talk to them in English. 00:17:35.37\00:17:39.34 I like you to meet some of my friends here 00:17:39.37\00:17:41.74 this is, Recelle she is kinder two student 00:17:41.77\00:17:47.32 and she is a very good friend to me. 00:17:47.35\00:17:50.14 She always gives me hugs and yeah, it's very special. 00:17:50.17\00:17:55.37 That's somebody we got there. 00:17:55.40\00:17:57.34 Another one this is Recelle 00:17:57.37\00:17:59.83 and she is also a kinder student. 00:17:59.86\00:18:03.57 When you say kinder student what do you mean exactly? 00:18:03.60\00:18:06.91 It means that they -- 00:18:06.94\00:18:08.69 Like first grade? 00:18:08.72\00:18:09.75 They are not doing any periodical testing 00:18:09.78\00:18:11.25 or anything like that 00:18:11.28\00:18:12.31 it's just sort of more informal teaching, yeah, more -- 00:18:12.34\00:18:17.65 It's like a kindergarten or like pre first grade 00:18:17.68\00:18:20.79 or is it actually first grade. 00:18:20.82\00:18:22.41 It's not first grade. 00:18:22.44\00:18:23.82 It's like kindergarten and that call them a kinder. 00:18:23.85\00:18:26.12 Yeah. 00:18:26.15\00:18:27.87 Okay, any other girls you want to introduce. 00:18:27.90\00:18:29.72 Yeah, we'll get there Margi, over here Margi 00:18:29.75\00:18:34.22 and this one is Jian. 00:18:34.25\00:18:36.73 And they are all kinder. 00:18:36.76\00:18:40.61 They get me in my morning-- morning love and affection. 00:18:40.64\00:18:44.07 Yeah. 00:18:47.89\00:18:48.92 Some of them are studying to do periodical tests 00:19:06.77\00:19:10.45 and the others just continuing on 00:19:10.48\00:19:13.55 doing their normal study here. 00:19:13.58\00:19:16.99 So which one's here are getting ready 00:19:17.02\00:19:18.81 for taking their tests. 00:19:18.84\00:19:20.33 Two students, we have Barnie, 00:19:20.36\00:19:23.35 he is grade three and Jamel grade four. 00:19:23.38\00:19:27.24 And then the other students, they just continue on with their 00:19:27.27\00:19:30.76 regular curriculum. 00:19:30.79\00:19:31.88 Yes, and one student is finished 00:19:31.91\00:19:36.38 so, he is my assistant teacher. 00:19:36.41\00:19:38.94 You tell me is it positive, comparative or supportive, 00:19:43.13\00:19:50.96 Biggest? 00:19:50.99\00:19:54.80 Comparative. 00:19:54.83\00:19:56.11 Cleaner? 00:19:59.08\00:20:02.54 Positive. 00:20:02.57\00:20:04.17 Yes. 00:20:04.20\00:20:05.49 More beautiful? 00:20:09.13\00:20:12.25 Supportive. 00:20:12.28\00:20:13.60 Comparative. 00:20:13.63\00:20:14.87 Right now we are here in Idaho, at the -- 00:20:14.90\00:20:16.84 our house at the property of Laymen Ministries 00:20:16.87\00:20:19.11 and this week we have been holding 00:20:19.14\00:20:21.08 a youth in missions boot camp, 00:20:21.11\00:20:23.74 we have group of young people here 00:20:23.77\00:20:24.80 that are getting training 'cause this next Sunday 00:20:24.83\00:20:26.59 they are hopping on an airplane 00:20:26.62\00:20:27.65 and they're going for little over ten months 00:20:27.68\00:20:29.14 to the Philippines. 00:20:29.17\00:20:30.30 So we've been teaching them about everything 00:20:30.33\00:20:32.16 from how to purchase their supplies 00:20:32.19\00:20:34.44 about cross culture ministry interfacing 00:20:34.47\00:20:36.37 with Tagalog and Katutubo people. 00:20:36.40\00:20:39.20 Then native and the majority people over there, 00:20:39.23\00:20:41.97 about how to wash clothes in a tub, how to prepare food. 00:20:42.00\00:20:45.59 Basically preparing them to be able to step into 00:20:45.62\00:20:49.14 that environment and not have so much culture shock 00:20:49.17\00:20:51.33 like what we have seen happen in the past 00:20:51.36\00:20:53.03 we have also Kelsey and Jenessa here. 00:20:53.06\00:20:56.08 Kelsey was over there last year and Jenessa was there last year, 00:20:56.11\00:20:59.08 so they are helping share some of their things, 00:20:59.11\00:21:01.12 you know, how to work in the classroom and such. 00:21:01.15\00:21:02.82 My daughter's leading out, 00:21:02.85\00:21:04.11 she has been over there for three and half years. 00:21:04.14\00:21:05.42 My wife is helping leading out 00:21:05.45\00:21:06.95 and I am teaching some of the classes here. 00:21:06.98\00:21:09.26 We knew some of the young people 00:21:09.29\00:21:10.46 at the boot camp here at Laymen Ministries 00:21:10.49\00:21:12.70 and I would like to have them introduce themselves. 00:21:12.73\00:21:15.39 So, you could know who they are 00:21:15.42\00:21:17.35 and Robert, why don't you start. 00:21:17.38\00:21:19.19 Hi, I am Robert, I'm 19 years old 00:21:19.22\00:21:21.05 from Berrien Springs, Michigan. 00:21:21.08\00:21:23.69 I'm 00:21:28.72\00:21:31.43 Hi, I'm Jess and I'm from Colorado 00:21:31.46\00:21:33.49 and I'm 20. 00:21:33.52\00:21:34.66 Hi, my name is Kelsey, I'm from California 00:21:34.69\00:21:36.95 and I'm 20 your learning, so far at boot camp? 00:21:43.66\00:21:46.19 I want to say like -- Take two. 00:21:49.80\00:21:51.44 Yeah 00:21:51.47\00:21:52.51 Um... 00:21:52.54\00:21:53.57 all right just to say it, I didn't think. 00:21:55.12\00:21:57.59 Okay Julia-- 00:21:57.62\00:21:58.65 Julia, go to Julia first. 00:21:58.68\00:21:59.71 What have you learnt so far here 00:21:59.74\00:22:00.80 from you've been at boot camp? 00:22:00.83\00:22:01.87 Here at the Laymen Ministries boot camp 00:22:01.90\00:22:03.70 we've learned a lot about the food 00:22:03.73\00:22:05.26 we'll be eating how to prepare those foods 00:22:05.29\00:22:07.56 and some of the difficulties 00:22:07.59\00:22:09.24 that we'll face while we are there. 00:22:09.27\00:22:11.11 Are you -- do you have any apprehensions about going there, 00:22:11.14\00:22:13.82 I mean are you are you -- 00:22:13.85\00:22:14.92 Not a one, it will be great. 00:22:14.95\00:22:16.76 Are you serious? 00:22:16.79\00:22:17.86 No, I'm scared. 00:22:17.89\00:22:21.24 This is like virtual television you know it's like 00:22:21.27\00:22:23.58 we are gonna get these young people here 00:22:23.61\00:22:26.05 before they go they are going through this training 00:22:26.08\00:22:27.87 and they're getting all geared up to go 00:22:27.90\00:22:29.58 and they are not afraid to go as she was just saying 00:22:29.61\00:22:31.44 but we are gonna go to Philippines, 00:22:31.47\00:22:32.78 that few months we are gonna video tape them 00:22:32.81\00:22:34.20 while they are over there. 00:22:34.23\00:22:35.26 We're gonna see if the story changes 00:22:35.29\00:22:36.87 or if it really turn out to be successful 00:22:36.90\00:22:39.09 and then when they comeback we will get some more 00:22:39.12\00:22:40.99 video footages to share with you about their experience 00:22:41.02\00:22:43.15 so, Robert what have you learnt so far at boot camp? 00:22:43.18\00:22:46.17 Well, I have learnt more about spirituality 00:22:46.20\00:22:48.49 how to keep, you know, a connection with the Lord 00:22:48.52\00:22:51.00 because in the Philippines, 00:22:51.03\00:22:52.31 it's gonna be kind of crazy there 00:22:52.34\00:22:53.46 and everyone is distracted and everything like that, 00:22:53.49\00:22:55.03 but as long as we keep connect with God, 00:22:55.06\00:22:56.76 things work out. 00:22:56.79\00:22:57.82 And are you afraid of like the snakes or the bugs 00:22:57.85\00:23:00.06 or any of that kind of stuff that we've talked about or? 00:23:00.09\00:23:03.42 Not at all really, I'm looking for it to, 00:23:03.45\00:23:05.57 you know, chopping some of them up yeah, 00:23:05.60\00:23:08.81 I was scared of them but, you know, yeah, no. 00:23:08.84\00:23:11.82 How about you Lindsay what have you learnt so far 00:23:11.85\00:23:13.31 while you've been here? 00:23:13.34\00:23:14.96 Well, we have learned 00:23:14.99\00:23:16.35 about the different cultural differences 00:23:16.38\00:23:18.23 and just different cultures 00:23:18.26\00:23:20.27 and how the Philippinos are and the way they say yes and no 00:23:20.30\00:23:23.53 and how we should just approach them 00:23:23.56\00:23:25.90 and not being so forward anymore and just respect their-- 00:23:25.93\00:23:29.20 the way they do things 00:23:29.23\00:23:30.60 instead of just coming right out and hi, you know. 00:23:30.63\00:23:34.96 Are you - do you have any apprehensions? 00:23:34.99\00:23:36.90 Yeah, I have a couple of apprehensions 00:23:36.93\00:23:39.02 about my cooking abilities not so much on that level. 00:23:39.05\00:23:44.51 Jennessa, what have you learnt so far here at boot camp? 00:23:44.54\00:23:48.56 What kind of things that they've been impressed on your mind? 00:23:48.59\00:23:51.05 You have been to the Philippines before 00:23:51.08\00:23:52.36 so, I mean, you know, 00:23:52.39\00:23:53.42 this is kind of like second return 00:23:53.45\00:23:54.94 like around for you? 00:23:54.97\00:23:57.59 Yeah, I think mainly cultural things 00:23:57.62\00:23:59.95 that I didn't know about like, 00:23:59.98\00:24:01.96 is that about sitting down with them--in 00:24:01.99\00:24:03.83 not saying anything. 00:24:03.86\00:24:06.01 What do you mean sitting down with them 00:24:06.04\00:24:07.29 and not saying anything? 00:24:07.32\00:24:08.35 I mean, you're there to be a missionary 00:24:08.38\00:24:10.12 you just go down set with these people ask same thing? 00:24:10.15\00:24:13.08 Well, that's part of their culture, I guess. 00:24:13.11\00:24:16.59 You explain it better than me though. 00:24:16.62\00:24:18.28 To bond with them. 00:24:18.31\00:24:19.34 Yeah, just-so they feel like you trust them. 00:24:19.37\00:24:22.68 I'm learning how much fun it is to watch young people 00:24:22.71\00:24:25.65 get excited about going there. 00:24:25.68\00:24:27.25 I mean, there weren't cameras around 00:24:27.28\00:24:28.93 when I was getting ready to go 00:24:28.96\00:24:30.05 and I can tell you I was really excited. 00:24:30.08\00:24:31.62 But seeing these people and they are like, 00:24:31.65\00:24:33.99 wow and we're doing that and I am like, yes you are. 00:24:34.02\00:24:37.34 A lot of fun for me and I'm enjoying 00:24:37.37\00:24:40.41 the joy that these kids have. 00:24:40.44\00:24:43.39 Really important to understand 00:24:43.42\00:24:44.45 that Julia just stepped on an ant, 00:24:44.48\00:24:45.51 she was freaked 00:24:45.54\00:24:46.57 and she is going to the Philippines. 00:24:46.60\00:24:47.70 There it is. The dead ant. 00:24:47.73\00:24:52.72 How about you two you kind of already been on your own right 00:24:52.75\00:24:55.00 so, this is not going to be that big of a thing, 00:24:55.03\00:24:57.58 like being separated from family and stuff as much. 00:24:57.61\00:25:00.21 No, it will be difficult because there is not 00:25:00.24\00:25:03.03 another American person 00:25:03.06\00:25:05.20 to kind of relate with and talk to, so you-- 00:25:05.23\00:25:07.36 This is in your village ship it's for - 00:25:07.39\00:25:08.42 Not in my village, yeah, I mean it's good to have 00:25:08.45\00:25:11.11 companionship here and meet the people 00:25:11.14\00:25:12.75 you will be working with. 00:25:12.78\00:25:14.20 But certainly it's going to be difficult 00:25:14.23\00:25:16.44 it's not like just living on your own 00:25:16.47\00:25:17.83 it's going around the world, in another country. 00:25:17.86\00:25:21.85 So it will be difficult. How about of you? 00:25:21.88\00:25:25.45 Um, I think it will be a time of adjustment 00:25:25.48\00:25:28.49 and I think once I get pass that 00:25:28.52\00:25:29.92 oh, I have all these kids and it's so hot out 00:25:29.95\00:25:33.13 and it's raining and so I think once I get into it 00:25:33.16\00:25:36.22 I will start enjoying it a lot more 00:25:36.25\00:25:37.77 and I wont want to come back. 00:25:37.80\00:25:40.43 Well, the truth is we will find out that everything 00:25:40.46\00:25:43.26 that they said will come to pass or not 00:25:43.29\00:25:45.82 or whether it's true or not true, 00:25:45.85\00:25:47.43 that's part of reality television. 00:25:47.46\00:25:49.86 My time here has been life changing. 00:25:49.89\00:25:52.26 This is the last day I guess 00:25:52.29\00:25:53.93 its all over closing ceremony has finished. 00:25:53.96\00:25:58.36 We've had our last time at the river 00:25:58.39\00:26:00.80 so, it's about time to go I guess 00:26:00.83\00:26:04.25 I have mixed feelings about it, 00:26:04.28\00:26:06.23 one hand I am excited to go home and stuff 00:26:06.26\00:26:08.94 since I've been to the states nine almost ten months now. 00:26:08.97\00:26:14.18 On the other hand I'm really sad because you know 00:26:14.21\00:26:16.64 that I really miss my co-workers, 00:26:16.67\00:26:19.07 I really miss my students 00:26:19.10\00:26:21.16 and I will really miss all the things 00:26:21.19\00:26:23.32 I've gotten to do here. 00:26:23.35\00:26:24.62 A few days ago I found out that one of my students 00:26:29.60\00:26:34.88 had newly born sister yeah, new brother actually 00:26:34.91\00:26:40.69 and the parents decided to name him Anthony. 00:26:40.72\00:26:44.17 Bye, bye-- 00:26:45.60\00:26:47.36 Bye.
