Our spiritual journey is gonna continue. 00:00:02.76\00:00:04.78 In fact, at this point, 00:00:04.81\00:00:06.34 the programs are gonna take a really interesting twist. 00:00:06.37\00:00:09.13 We're gonna be talking about things like alcohol, 00:00:09.16\00:00:11.87 angels and even Willie Nelson. 00:00:11.90\00:00:13.99 In fact, I'd like to show you 00:00:14.02\00:00:15.05 how to cut lumber with a chainsaw. 00:00:15.08\00:00:16.80 But you know, more than that, 00:00:16.83\00:00:17.86 what I'm really hoping is we go through this series 00:00:17.89\00:00:19.96 of programs called Spiritual Journeys 00:00:19.99\00:00:21.92 is that you will catch your vision 00:00:21.95\00:00:23.56 of how God has a special journey 00:00:23.59\00:00:25.11 just for you and your family. 00:00:25.14\00:00:26.88 This is the second program in a series 00:00:43.17\00:00:44.86 entitled Spiritual Journeys. 00:00:44.89\00:00:46.33 Each program is an hour long, 00:00:46.36\00:00:47.72 so if you're watching this on TV, 00:00:47.75\00:00:49.09 unfortunately, you're only gonna get half of this program. 00:00:49.12\00:00:51.97 There are several programs in this whole series 00:00:52.00\00:00:53.93 entitled Spiritual Journeys. 00:00:53.96\00:00:55.05 So if you'd like to get 00:00:55.08\00:00:56.11 this whole program or the whole series, 00:00:56.14\00:00:58.40 please contact us at our address, 00:00:58.43\00:01:00.06 phone number, or website at the end of this presentation. 00:01:00.09\00:01:03.20 And one thing that we determined 00:01:03.23\00:01:04.91 in our hearts years ago 00:01:04.94\00:01:06.14 what we're gonna do as we start praying about this 00:01:06.17\00:01:08.73 and thinking about moving up into the country 00:01:08.76\00:01:11.52 was it would be really easy 00:01:11.55\00:01:13.47 to be so consumed in trying to um-- 00:01:13.50\00:01:17.47 spend all your time building 00:01:17.50\00:01:18.66 and spend all your time trying to get the house going 00:01:18.69\00:01:21.15 and stuff that you would neglect your dedication 00:01:21.18\00:01:23.58 and your spiritual commitment to God so, 00:01:23.61\00:01:25.74 we thought about the story of Daniel 00:01:25.77\00:01:27.63 and we decided that three times a day 00:01:27.66\00:01:29.45 that we were gonna give our hearts to the Lord. 00:01:29.48\00:01:32.19 In the morning, we would get up and have our devotions, 00:01:32.22\00:01:34.12 we would stop mid-afternoon and have a special prayer 00:01:34.15\00:01:36.73 and then in the evenings, 00:01:36.76\00:01:37.79 we would always have family worship 00:01:37.82\00:01:39.08 and we had one small child when we first moved up here. 00:01:39.11\00:01:41.61 We decided to keep that as a priority 00:01:41.64\00:01:43.33 as we started doing this. 00:01:43.36\00:01:44.79 You know when we were mixing up 00:01:44.82\00:01:46.81 the cement for the-- foundation, to me, 00:01:46.84\00:01:49.56 it was amazing and we started here 00:01:49.59\00:01:51.92 filling this wheelbarrow with cement and rocks 00:01:51.95\00:01:55.15 and sand and water and it was like-- 00:01:55.18\00:01:58.82 mixing this big, big batch of dough 00:01:58.85\00:02:04.11 but you are stirring it with this straw board, 00:02:04.14\00:02:06.93 barely able to move it. 00:02:06.96\00:02:08.24 It was-- I don't know, to me, 00:02:08.27\00:02:11.46 it was just amazing to watch cement 00:02:11.49\00:02:13.31 being made in a wheelbarrow. 00:02:13.34\00:02:16.35 This was our first experience, 00:02:16.38\00:02:17.73 I want to honestly say that I had no ability 00:02:17.76\00:02:20.38 of other than what Jerry and Linda Warnick shared with us 00:02:20.41\00:02:23.67 about the principles of how to do this. 00:02:23.70\00:02:25.66 We were what we call North Idaho greenhorns 00:02:25.69\00:02:28.07 you know and we ended up 00:02:28.10\00:02:29.44 digging this foundation by hand here 00:02:29.47\00:02:31.87 and put these rocks in and as you look at it, 00:02:31.90\00:02:34.93 we have a saying here at the Ministry, 00:02:34.96\00:02:36.42 this is the crooked house that Jeff built 00:02:36.45\00:02:38.80 and these rocks here are all placed in by hands, 00:02:38.83\00:02:41.38 we used ah-- slabs that were left over 00:02:41.41\00:02:43.93 from the chainsaw mill in cutting the lumber. 00:02:43.96\00:02:46.45 This particular siding on the outside the house 00:02:46.48\00:02:48.60 is some of the purchase siding that we bought. 00:02:48.63\00:02:51.11 And the rest of the structural material for this, 00:02:51.14\00:02:54.10 and a lot of the cedar siding on the outside 00:02:54.13\00:02:56.03 of this house was all cut with a chainsaw mill. 00:02:56.06\00:02:58.35 All the sub floor, all the inside of the house, 00:02:58.38\00:03:01.31 everything, in fact this main structure 00:03:01.34\00:03:03.55 when we-- just got the main structure up 00:03:03.58\00:03:07.14 and enclosed and we were living in it, we had you know, 00:03:07.17\00:03:09.65 if you're gonna have a hard time believing this, 00:03:09.68\00:03:11.06 we had about $3,200 into the whole house. 00:03:11.09\00:03:14.83 I know that seems unheard of but 00:03:14.86\00:03:16.46 you have to consider these windows here, 00:03:16.49\00:03:18.34 these windows here, we ended up getting out 00:03:18.37\00:03:20.71 and behind the glass shops, there were rejects, 00:03:20.74\00:03:24.02 there were defects, sometimes we got them for free. 00:03:24.05\00:03:27.43 Some of them were blemished, we paid, 00:03:27.46\00:03:28.69 you know, $5 a piece for, 00:03:28.72\00:03:30.03 the same with some of these other, 00:03:30.06\00:03:31.31 other windows we have here. 00:03:31.34\00:03:32.72 One of the other challenges we had to where we were building 00:03:32.75\00:03:34.95 this place was my wife started 00:03:34.98\00:03:37.15 telling about our makeshift kitchen in houses, 00:03:37.18\00:03:39.64 old wooden camper that we were living in, 00:03:39.67\00:03:43.25 was refrigeration, you have to realize 00:03:43.28\00:03:44.83 that we lived up here without electricity 00:03:44.86\00:03:46.95 and without running water 00:03:46.98\00:03:48.68 and we didn't have any of the luxuries of city living 00:03:48.71\00:03:52.37 and we needed a refrigerator. 00:03:52.40\00:03:53.97 Do you remember? 00:03:54.00\00:03:55.15 Well, we cut a whole on the ground 00:03:55.18\00:03:57.32 and we filled the whole with sawdust 00:03:57.35\00:04:00.12 and then we lined the sawdust with wood 00:04:00.15\00:04:03.34 and because the ground stayed at certain temperature, 00:04:03.37\00:04:06.51 we were able to keep fruits and vegetables in it. 00:04:06.54\00:04:09.30 We had keep um, leftovers down bed, 00:04:09.33\00:04:13.89 as long as we didn't have any dairy products 00:04:13.92\00:04:15.55 or meat products in it, we were pretty safe. 00:04:15.58\00:04:17.85 And what we did is we had a piece of insulation board 00:04:17.88\00:04:20.29 that we would put over top of it 00:04:20.32\00:04:21.48 that was like about this thick. 00:04:21.51\00:04:23.11 And that would-- the ground temperature here 00:04:23.14\00:04:25.28 as clay soil like I mentioned about the mud ruts, 00:04:25.31\00:04:28.27 the clay soil is pretty cool. 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.23 Do you remember what happened one morning? 00:04:30.26\00:04:32.33 Yeah, one morning I was studying at my table in here 00:04:32.36\00:04:35.80 after we had the house established 00:04:35.83\00:04:39.05 after a couple years and I looked out there, 00:04:39.08\00:04:41.28 and there was a great big huge black bear 00:04:41.31\00:04:42.83 in our refrigerator hole 00:04:42.86\00:04:44.19 and we are living on about $35 a week at that time 00:04:44.22\00:04:47.69 and this bear had just got into all our groceries 00:04:47.72\00:04:51.11 that we were buying and I remember chasing, 00:04:51.14\00:04:53.57 I was I kind of just reacted and I ran towards the bear. 00:04:53.60\00:04:57.04 I know you're going to think I'm a little crazy 00:04:57.07\00:04:58.98 but I ran towards the bear and I started screaming at him, 00:04:59.01\00:05:01.42 making much noise and the bear ran off 00:05:01.45\00:05:03.71 into the forest and I was chasing him 00:05:03.74\00:05:05.92 and as I was chasing him, the bear just stopped. 00:05:05.95\00:05:08.43 And now, if you have studied the book of Daniel, 00:05:08.46\00:05:09.92 you know about the bear that's the bear of Medo-Persia. 00:05:09.95\00:05:12.43 You know he is the bear with the three ribs in his mouth 00:05:12.46\00:05:14.36 well the bear has lifted up on one side, 00:05:14.39\00:05:16.16 well bears do that, you know, I found out that this big bear 00:05:16.19\00:05:18.44 who I was only about 30 feet behind, 00:05:18.47\00:05:20.38 he lifted up on one side 00:05:20.41\00:05:21.66 and he turned around and he looked at me 00:05:21.69\00:05:23.60 and I could tell what he was thinking. 00:05:23.63\00:05:24.90 He was thinking why am I running from this little guy. 00:05:24.93\00:05:27.92 And I look at him and I thought 00:05:27.95\00:05:30.10 what on the world am I doing chasing this black bear, 00:05:30.13\00:05:32.79 this black bear's one of the bigger black bears 00:05:32.82\00:05:34.57 I've ever seen in my life and I ran back down to the house 00:05:34.60\00:05:37.31 and locked my bear proof door 00:05:37.34\00:05:38.86 which I will show you in just a second. 00:05:38.89\00:05:40.53 But just some of those adventures 00:05:40.56\00:05:42.04 that take place we you move to the country, you know. 00:05:42.07\00:05:43.72 It was funny to watch the bear because he is down in the hole 00:05:43.75\00:05:47.90 and he has got his nose 00:05:47.93\00:05:49.31 and he is rolling around this melon, 00:05:49.34\00:05:51.58 trying to get a bite on it, 00:05:51.61\00:05:53.40 but he's thrown corn out this way 00:05:53.43\00:05:55.36 and corn out that way. 00:05:55.39\00:05:57.44 These were precious commodities, 00:05:57.47\00:05:58.87 we were a little bit upset at the bear. 00:05:58.90\00:06:00.50 Yeah, we were-- really, really poor. 00:06:00.53\00:06:02.81 But let's go ahead over to the house here 00:06:02.84\00:06:05.76 'cause we're mentioning all this lumber 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.26 we have cut with a chainsaw mill on this house 00:06:07.29\00:06:09.03 except for some of the cedar siding right here. 00:06:09.06\00:06:11.72 But this is our bear proof door, 00:06:11.75\00:06:12.93 this is a door that we had actually 00:06:12.96\00:06:14.46 cut with chainsaw lumber and outside it's all cedar-- 00:06:14.49\00:06:18.81 we just recently upgraded 00:06:18.84\00:06:20.61 to this really nice modern door right here 00:06:20.64\00:06:23.01 just a couple years ago 00:06:23.04\00:06:24.07 'cause we needed to actually seal it off better for winter 00:06:24.10\00:06:26.01 but I just couldn't get rid of this door 00:06:26.04\00:06:27.87 and this is our bear proof door. 00:06:27.90\00:06:29.47 And I want to show it to, 00:06:29.50\00:06:31.30 this door is three inches thick, 00:06:31.33\00:06:33.49 the outside as one inch of cedar. 00:06:33.52\00:06:35.67 The inside is one inch of red fir 00:06:35.70\00:06:37.83 and the inside of the door is one inch of pine 00:06:37.86\00:06:41.20 and the silly thing is we built this to be a bear proof door 00:06:41.23\00:06:44.10 for our house but this is the latch. 00:06:44.13\00:06:46.56 If you can see this-- 00:06:46.59\00:06:48.08 this latch is a this little 00:06:48.11\00:06:49.14 tiny Mickey Mouse hard grill latch 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.06 and I think a bear could probably 00:06:51.09\00:06:53.18 lean against this door and pop this off 00:06:53.21\00:06:55.53 but you know we were only in our early 20s 00:06:55.56\00:06:57.73 so we really weren't experienced 00:06:57.76\00:06:59.42 at doing this kind of stuff. 00:06:59.45\00:07:00.85 Well, before we had this-- 00:07:00.88\00:07:02.20 we just leaned a piece of plywood 00:07:02.23\00:07:03.99 against the hall, it was okay. 00:07:04.02\00:07:05.97 As soon as we got a door, we had put a lock on it. 00:07:06.00\00:07:08.53 Yeah. Funny thinking. 00:07:08.56\00:07:09.80 Let's take everybody, let's take-- 00:07:09.83\00:07:11.47 let's go inside and take a look inside of the house. 00:07:11.50\00:07:15.06 It's quite heavy, this doorway weighs a ton. 00:07:15.09\00:07:18.27 Let's go inside. 00:07:18.30\00:07:19.33 As you can tell by looking at this place, 00:07:26.12\00:07:28.99 all this lumber for this house was cut with a chainsaw. 00:07:29.02\00:07:32.30 In a little while, I'd like to take you out 00:07:32.33\00:07:33.47 and show you exactly 00:07:33.50\00:07:34.53 how we cut lumber with a chainsaw. 00:07:34.56\00:07:37.17 One thing that as you listen to the stories 00:07:37.20\00:07:39.73 of this spiritual journey in this part of our life, 00:07:39.76\00:07:42.09 I'd like you to understand that you know, 00:07:42.12\00:07:43.96 what we did was fairly radical. 00:07:43.99\00:07:45.42 This was back in 1981, '82 00:07:45.45\00:07:47.26 when we started building this place, 00:07:47.29\00:07:49.12 but if the Lord could take 00:07:49.15\00:07:50.24 a couple of young people like us 00:07:50.27\00:07:52.75 with hardly any money and move out 00:07:52.78\00:07:53.81 into the woods and do what happened here 00:07:53.84\00:07:56.22 certainly the Lord could get you out of an inner city area 00:07:56.25\00:07:58.63 with your kids and put you in an environment 00:07:58.66\00:08:00.42 that would be a lot better than living 00:08:00.45\00:08:02.90 in some of the inner city areas that we are in today. 00:08:02.93\00:08:05.42 This fireplace here, Jerry Warnick, 00:08:05.45\00:08:07.73 my good friend I was telling you about, 00:08:07.76\00:08:09.22 he lives up by Glacier National Park 00:08:09.25\00:08:11.23 showed us how to do stone work and this-- 00:08:11.26\00:08:13.76 this fireplace actually is an airtight wood stove. 00:08:13.79\00:08:16.80 In fact, if you look at the-- this metal plate on here 00:08:16.83\00:08:20.27 what we would do is we would load this thing up 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.09 with a lot of big chunks of wood 00:08:22.12\00:08:24.07 and then we would close this metal plate on here 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.89 and when it got down to below air outside, 00:08:25.92\00:08:28.12 this whole fireplace would heat up 00:08:28.15\00:08:30.25 into like a big riff of wood stove 00:08:30.28\00:08:34.07 and all the rocks will get nice and warm. 00:08:34.10\00:08:36.27 We had a gravity feed water system 00:08:36.30\00:08:37.93 that came down out of them, out of the top of the property 00:08:37.96\00:08:41.17 and fed down to the house 00:08:41.20\00:08:42.89 and we heated all our hot water with this wood stove. 00:08:42.92\00:08:45.42 This was also used to heat our house 00:08:45.45\00:08:46.99 but we have some heating coils here 00:08:47.02\00:08:48.46 that go up into all hot water tank 00:08:48.49\00:08:50.54 that we found behind a plumbing place 00:08:50.57\00:08:53.06 and this provided all the hot water for us. 00:08:53.09\00:08:55.46 Once we finally got a well in here, 00:08:55.49\00:08:56.80 of course you have to realize for me-- 00:08:56.83\00:08:58.11 quite a number years we didn't have these luxuries 00:08:58.14\00:09:00.05 but when we finally got 00:09:00.08\00:09:01.11 the gravity feed water system in, 00:09:01.14\00:09:02.77 we had some pressurized water here 00:09:02.80\00:09:04.10 and we could actually take hot showers, 00:09:04.13\00:09:06.06 which was a really nice feature. 00:09:06.09\00:09:08.22 And my wife had quite an interesting kitchen. 00:09:08.25\00:09:10.20 Do you remember what your kitchen 00:09:10.23\00:09:11.26 looked like back in the days we first moved here? 00:09:11.29\00:09:13.75 Oh, let's go look at it. It'll give you an idea. 00:09:13.78\00:09:16.89 And just it's important for you to understand 00:09:16.92\00:09:19.00 that when we first moved here, this was our main house, 00:09:19.03\00:09:21.68 we live in a different house now as the ministry is growing. 00:09:21.71\00:09:24.32 We've actually turned his house into an office 00:09:24.35\00:09:26.20 and I'll share with you later that you know, 00:09:26.23\00:09:28.51 the other parts of the office 00:09:28.54\00:09:29.99 and we have an administrative room here 00:09:30.02\00:09:31.43 and we have a lot of stuff stored in here so, 00:09:31.46\00:09:34.28 we have bookstore in here and things for publishing, 00:09:34.31\00:09:36.89 this is a break room for employees, 00:09:36.92\00:09:38.38 so things are considerably different 00:09:38.41\00:09:40.05 now than they were back in the early '80s 00:09:40.08\00:09:42.78 when we used to live here. 00:09:42.81\00:09:43.92 On the back side of the fire place 00:09:43.95\00:09:45.64 was my wood cook stove. 00:09:45.67\00:09:47.18 And what I did there is I heated the water for baths, 00:09:47.21\00:09:52.35 for washing clothes, and baking bread in it, 00:09:52.38\00:09:56.31 did everything from scratch, 00:09:56.34\00:09:58.32 and so we had our wood cook stove here 00:09:58.35\00:10:00.82 but over here where you see these beautiful oak cabinets, 00:10:00.85\00:10:03.88 now we had homemade cabinets made out of pine 00:10:03.91\00:10:07.78 and one time as Jeff was building those cabinets for me, 00:10:07.81\00:10:11.32 he had the countertop 00:10:11.35\00:10:12.38 made out of a very thick cedar board stand. 00:10:12.41\00:10:16.31 He had little this little tiny was is it a jig saw? 00:10:16.34\00:10:19.07 A saber saw-- Little saber saw. 00:10:19.10\00:10:20.48 --to a generator. 00:10:20.51\00:10:21.54 He was cutting a hole in that, 00:10:21.57\00:10:24.57 of course this was years later when we finally had a generator 00:10:24.60\00:10:27.26 and he was cutting a hole in that 00:10:27.29\00:10:29.29 to put a sink in for me 00:10:29.32\00:10:31.39 and he was just struggling and struggling 00:10:31.42\00:10:34.78 and it wasn't going anywhere 00:10:34.81\00:10:35.99 and now I'm thinking this isn't going to last. 00:10:36.02\00:10:37.98 And just like I thought he went out the door 00:10:38.01\00:10:40.54 and as I anticipated he came walking 00:10:40.57\00:10:42.50 right back in with his chain saw. 00:10:42.53\00:10:44.73 And he got up on the counter and ripped his chain saw 00:10:44.76\00:10:48.47 and just threw saw dust all over 00:10:48.50\00:10:51.95 but you know that's what I was used to, 00:10:51.98\00:10:54.16 I was used to following him around 00:10:54.19\00:10:55.38 and cleaning that mess as we-- as we built. 00:10:55.41\00:10:58.51 We have to understand that all of this lumber that we cut, 00:10:58.54\00:11:01.78 all the-- you know you guys 00:11:01.81\00:11:02.84 that are contractors that are watching 00:11:02.87\00:11:04.22 this are gonna have a hard time with this 00:11:04.25\00:11:05.60 but all the finished work on this house 00:11:05.63\00:11:08.65 was done with a chainsaw. 00:11:08.68\00:11:10.88 I'm talking the miter cuts for around the windows. 00:11:10.91\00:11:13.05 I'm talking about the window moldings, 00:11:13.08\00:11:14.84 I'm talking about all the fine 'delicate stuff' that-- 00:11:14.87\00:11:19.38 we didn't have a handsaw, we only had chainsaws 00:11:19.41\00:11:21.49 and so all the fine delicate stuff 00:11:21.52\00:11:23.03 that you would do with a chainsaw, 00:11:23.06\00:11:24.55 I mean, with a handsaw, we were doing with the chainsaw, 00:11:24.58\00:11:26.36 so all this finished carpentry, 00:11:26.39\00:11:28.58 edges and everything were either hand planed 00:11:28.61\00:11:30.47 with a hand plane or they were cut with a chainsaw. 00:11:30.50\00:11:32.82 So, it was only natural for me 00:11:32.85\00:11:35.47 to jump up on the counter with a chainsaw 00:11:35.50\00:11:37.15 and cut the hole for the sink. 00:11:37.18\00:11:38.71 We had this idea when we came up here, 00:11:38.74\00:11:39.95 we're going to do all these great things 00:11:39.98\00:11:42.09 and when the first year went by, 00:11:42.12\00:11:43.79 all of a sudden, we realized that things were happening 00:11:43.82\00:11:45.96 exactly the way that we thought that they should. 00:11:45.99\00:11:48.02 We had this idea we're gonna build a clinic up here, 00:11:48.05\00:11:50.90 we're gonna build houses, 00:11:50.93\00:11:51.96 we're gonna have a health food store and restaurant in town. 00:11:51.99\00:11:54.06 We were going to do all these great things for God, 00:11:54.09\00:11:56.34 revelation seminars and by the time 00:11:56.37\00:11:57.94 the first summer came to its end, 00:11:57.97\00:11:59.63 my brother and sister-in-law 00:11:59.66\00:12:01.00 decided the weather here was too cold, 00:12:01.03\00:12:02.43 they didn't like it and they left. 00:12:02.46\00:12:03.96 And we're up here and we had a house 00:12:03.99\00:12:06.03 that was just barely built 00:12:06.06\00:12:07.61 and this whole idea of 'the great work' 00:12:07.64\00:12:10.71 started to change focus 00:12:10.74\00:12:11.97 and we started to realize what the great work was, 00:12:12.00\00:12:14.39 not going out and doing some great things for God, 00:12:14.42\00:12:16.78 but it was about character development. 00:12:16.81\00:12:18.60 Learning to trust Him, learning Him to be-- 00:12:18.63\00:12:20.47 to be faithful in the little things, 00:12:20.50\00:12:22.10 learning to be frugal with what resources 00:12:22.13\00:12:24.78 and money that He-- Learning to surrender. 00:12:24.81\00:12:26.66 Learning to surrender, 00:12:26.69\00:12:28.04 learning how to get along as a husband and wife 00:12:28.07\00:12:30.02 and we found out that was really 00:12:30.05\00:12:31.14 what country living was about, 00:12:31.17\00:12:32.48 it wasn't about doing some great work for God. 00:12:32.51\00:12:34.96 It was about doing some great work in our hearts. 00:12:34.99\00:12:36.86 Our hearts. Yeah. 00:12:36.89\00:12:38.32 We would like to take you outside 00:12:38.35\00:12:39.41 and show you the generator 00:12:39.44\00:12:40.52 that we later bought to start powering this house 00:12:40.55\00:12:43.95 'cause as the ministry started growing, 00:12:43.98\00:12:45.63 as a ministry started growing, that's a whole another story 00:12:45.66\00:12:48.45 that will develop into this spiritual journey series 00:12:48.48\00:12:50.74 that we're on right now. 00:12:50.77\00:12:51.81 When we finally decided 00:12:56.37\00:12:57.59 that we needed to get electricity here 00:12:57.62\00:12:59.24 'cause the ministry was starting to grow, 00:12:59.27\00:13:00.58 we started out first with a little teeny Honda generator 00:13:00.61\00:13:03.76 and then we ended up moving to-- 00:13:03.79\00:13:06.12 this one here and a gentleman 00:13:06.15\00:13:08.40 who is a real kind individual gave this generator to us. 00:13:08.43\00:13:12.16 This is an old military generator, 00:13:12.19\00:13:14.23 it's not really, it doesn't really put out 00:13:14.26\00:13:16.20 all that much wattage but it was enough to charge 00:13:16.23\00:13:18.38 some graphique telephone batteries 00:13:18.41\00:13:20.61 and run an inverter system 00:13:20.64\00:13:21.99 so that we could have washing machine 00:13:22.02\00:13:24.57 and 12 volt power 'cause as the ministry started growing, 00:13:24.60\00:13:28.04 we started having computers 00:13:28.07\00:13:29.10 and such here but we were still running 00:13:29.13\00:13:30.81 this ministry off this generator 00:13:30.84\00:13:32.86 and this is like a 1945 old military generator 00:13:32.89\00:13:37.50 with a flathead four cylinder 00:13:37.53\00:13:38.74 and this provided electricity for us probably for almost, 00:13:38.77\00:13:41.80 I would think about almost five years 00:13:41.83\00:13:43.74 and then we finally got power in. 00:13:43.77\00:13:46.85 The whole story about how the power came 00:13:46.88\00:13:48.59 to the property is just definitely providential 00:13:48.62\00:13:52.24 and how the Lord lead and I'll never forget-- 00:13:52.27\00:13:57.33 our neighbor that has property right next to us here 00:13:57.36\00:14:00.16 and wanted to have power brought into our property. 00:14:00.19\00:14:02.78 And you see, when we first moved here 00:14:02.81\00:14:03.88 we had this idea we'd like to bring power to the property. 00:14:03.91\00:14:06.47 We checked- on it and we found 00:14:06.50\00:14:07.86 that it was going to cost $12,698. 00:14:07.89\00:14:12.20 Well, that was way out of the budget 00:14:12.23\00:14:14.88 that we could ever even consider affording 00:14:14.91\00:14:16.72 and so year after year went by we just knew 00:14:16.75\00:14:18.51 we'll probably not get power into this place ever 00:14:18.54\00:14:20.61 but the ministry started growing in 00:14:20.64\00:14:22.47 and I knew the Lord knew 00:14:22.50\00:14:23.96 that we needed to have electricity 00:14:23.99\00:14:25.44 to do everything we're doing. 00:14:25.47\00:14:27.02 The neighbor said why don't we check with the-- 00:14:27.05\00:14:28.79 this huge corporation on property right behind us 00:14:28.82\00:14:31.16 and see if we can get power in and he checked with them, 00:14:31.19\00:14:35.86 they were having a board meeting 00:14:35.89\00:14:37.49 and they called me up on a Friday morning 00:14:37.52\00:14:41.29 and they said we've decided 00:14:41.32\00:14:42.40 you could put power in through our property 00:14:42.43\00:14:44.12 but because you're going through our property 00:14:44.15\00:14:45.63 you have to go underground. 00:14:45.66\00:14:47.15 And I said well, how much would that cost? 00:14:47.18\00:14:48.51 And they said around $12,000 00:14:48.54\00:14:50.93 and I was thinking oh, nine years down the road 00:14:50.96\00:14:53.83 and it's still the same price which we can't afford. 00:14:53.86\00:14:57.06 And I was a little discouraged 00:14:57.09\00:14:58.12 but you know the Lord has an interesting way 00:14:58.15\00:14:59.75 of having things happen because that next morning 00:14:59.78\00:15:02.48 which was Sabbath morning we went to church 00:15:02.51\00:15:04.17 I was feeling a little bit depressed 00:15:04.20\00:15:06.21 and I was thinking, Lord, you know why is this happening 00:15:06.24\00:15:08.70 because we really need to have electricity here 00:15:08.73\00:15:10.85 and what ended up happening was 00:15:10.88\00:15:12.89 after we came home from church. 00:15:12.92\00:15:14.13 We heard a knock at the door and I opened the door up 00:15:14.16\00:15:16.42 and it was the gentleman on the-- 00:15:16.45\00:15:18.31 almost a mile section of property 00:15:18.34\00:15:19.75 right behind our house and he said, 00:15:19.78\00:15:21.68 "Jeff I was just wondering, 00:15:21.71\00:15:23.96 have you ever thought about getting power in your place" 00:15:23.99\00:15:26.18 And I kind of grinned and said 00:15:26.21\00:15:27.75 "Well, you know, 00:15:27.78\00:15:28.81 I thought about that actually quite a bit lately 00:15:28.84\00:15:29.88 and I didn't tell him you know about 00:15:29.91\00:15:31.01 what was happening just the last week 00:15:31.04\00:15:34.20 and he said you know what let's go take a look at the property 00:15:34.23\00:15:36.93 and I got thinking should I be doing this on Sabbath? 00:15:36.96\00:15:38.89 Well, I think the Lord brought this gentleman to me 00:15:38.92\00:15:42.15 to our family and so I went out for a walk with him 00:15:42.18\00:15:44.60 and he went talk with his other family members 00:15:44.63\00:15:46.59 and that individual gave us permission 00:15:46.62\00:15:49.40 to be able to put power in 00:15:49.43\00:15:51.01 right next to this corporation's property 00:15:51.04\00:15:52.97 just over thirty feet cut down to swath the trees 00:15:53.00\00:15:55.90 for free all the way in from the highway. 00:15:55.93\00:15:58.45 And you know how much it cost us? 00:15:58.48\00:15:59.73 It cost us $1260-- 00:15:59.76\00:16:04.24 $1268 or something like that was almost exactly 00:16:04.27\00:16:07.14 a tide of what it was going to cost us, 00:16:07.17\00:16:09.81 you know, nine years before that to get power in 00:16:09.84\00:16:12.02 and what this other company wanted to charger us. 00:16:12.05\00:16:14.27 And that was just again another sign you know, 00:16:14.30\00:16:16.72 of how the Lord was leading to be able 00:16:16.75\00:16:18.76 to help this ministry to continue to grow 00:16:18.79\00:16:21.36 and to provide the needs that we had here 00:16:21.39\00:16:23.24 to really make this ministry 00:16:23.27\00:16:25.86 be the blessing that it is today around the world. 00:16:25.89\00:16:28.13 One of our greatest needs that we had up here 00:16:32.45\00:16:34.57 after several years a running the ministry 00:16:34.60\00:16:36.92 was getting a telephone in 00:16:36.95\00:16:38.07 and before we even got power into this place. 00:16:38.10\00:16:41.25 You have to consider this extremely remote area 00:16:41.28\00:16:43.70 and try to get telephone in here 00:16:43.73\00:16:45.08 was going to cost a lot of money. 00:16:45.11\00:16:46.90 And we were making it a real serious matter of prayer 00:16:46.93\00:16:50.56 and I had used a one of the neighbors phones 00:16:50.59\00:16:53.58 and I called and asked about having an engineer 00:16:53.61\00:16:56.52 from the telephone company come out 00:16:56.55\00:16:58.38 to our place in just give us an estimation 00:16:58.41\00:17:00.34 on how much it was going to cost 00:17:00.37\00:17:01.48 to have the telephone brought in. 00:17:01.51\00:17:03.62 And I remember one morning we were about our daily business 00:17:03.65\00:17:05.92 at the house doing home schooling 00:17:05.95\00:17:07.87 and I was studying and there was a knock on the door 00:17:07.90\00:17:09.84 and there was a gentleman 00:17:09.87\00:17:10.90 there with one of these little wheels a meter wheel 00:17:10.93\00:17:12.71 that measures distance. 00:17:12.74\00:17:14.63 And he started telling us that, 00:17:14.66\00:17:15.69 well, we can get telephone in here, 00:17:15.72\00:17:16.91 it's going to cost around $700 I think it was at that time. 00:17:16.94\00:17:20.71 And he looked up on the wall and he saw a picture of Jesus 00:17:20.74\00:17:24.01 and he looked down at my desk there was right by the door 00:17:24.04\00:17:26.19 and he saw a Bible and he look at us 00:17:26.22\00:17:28.22 said are you folks Christians? 00:17:28.25\00:17:29.41 Then we said yeah, and he said 00:17:29.44\00:17:30.70 oh, I'm Christian too and we visited with him some 00:17:30.73\00:17:33.30 and it was really nice and-- and then he said do you know 00:17:33.33\00:17:36.76 we can get telephone in here and there would be no problem 00:17:36.79\00:17:38.86 I'm the head engineer and I looked at him 00:17:38.89\00:17:41.88 and I said I don't have the money 00:17:41.91\00:17:43.44 to have this system installed and he said 00:17:43.47\00:17:46.40 "Oh, we can work out a payment plan for you, 00:17:46.43\00:17:47.83 don't worry about that." 00:17:47.86\00:17:49.07 And so they drag actually a wire 00:17:49.10\00:17:50.89 that was just laying on top in the snow 00:17:50.92\00:17:52.72 and across the creeks and everything, 00:17:52.75\00:17:54.29 all the way up from the county road 00:17:54.32\00:17:56.28 over a mile away, all the way down into our property here 00:17:56.31\00:17:59.28 and hocked up the telephoning and we had telephone up here 00:17:59.31\00:18:02.38 and so I started making monthly payments 00:18:02.41\00:18:04.38 but the only odd thing was as every time 00:18:04.41\00:18:06.45 I made a monthly payment 00:18:06.48\00:18:07.51 it was just being credited to our phone bill 00:18:07.54\00:18:09.64 and so our phone bill was like 00:18:09.67\00:18:11.88 increasing rather than being charged. 00:18:11.91\00:18:14.08 And so I started calling the company up, 00:18:14.11\00:18:15.84 then I called this place and I called that place 00:18:15.87\00:18:17.89 and they didn't know what to do about it, 00:18:17.92\00:18:19.62 they didn't tell me where to put the money. 00:18:19.65\00:18:21.21 I finally called the engineer up 00:18:21.24\00:18:22.79 that had originally come up here 00:18:22.82\00:18:25.18 and he said to me he said "Jeff I'll check into this." 00:18:25.21\00:18:27.87 Now this is after I've done everything 00:18:27.90\00:18:29.24 I possibly could do to try to make payments 00:18:29.27\00:18:31.76 on the installation of this telephone line 00:18:31.79\00:18:33.81 he said "Jeff I'll see what I can do 00:18:33.84\00:18:35.48 until you hear from me 00:18:35.51\00:18:36.67 don't you worry about anything from this point on." 00:18:36.70\00:18:39.37 And till this day I've never heard back from him. 00:18:39.40\00:18:42.32 And so the Lord provided free telephone for us here, 00:18:42.35\00:18:45.25 I'd done everything on my part 00:18:45.28\00:18:46.45 to clear my conscience to try to be responsible 00:18:46.48\00:18:49.11 and we've never heard back 00:18:49.14\00:18:51.06 from the telephone company and to this day, 00:18:51.09\00:18:53.81 now we have multi line system up here for the whole mystery. 00:18:53.84\00:18:57.44 The first thing you do when you cut lumber 00:19:25.82\00:19:27.20 with a chainsaw mill as you have this apparatus here. 00:19:27.23\00:19:29.50 Oh, man this thing weighs a ton. 00:19:29.53\00:19:31.49 This is the chainsaw mill, last time four chainsaw mill 00:19:31.52\00:19:34.11 with husk of chain saw and this is your log 00:19:34.14\00:19:37.27 and now we're going to prepare the log 00:19:37.30\00:19:38.77 and we're going to get ready to cut-- 00:19:38.80\00:19:40.92 cut it up into boards. 00:19:40.95\00:19:42.41 Good. 00:20:05.90\00:20:06.95 That's the carriage return. 00:20:38.68\00:20:42.64 Well, this finishes are here. That is so nice. 00:20:42.67\00:20:46.02 It's cut a little bit rough because it's a brand new chain. 00:20:46.05\00:20:48.31 Now you put this, just drop it. 00:21:12.17\00:21:15.56 What we've done now is we've taken this log 00:21:38.86\00:21:41.12 and we've cut off two sides of it 00:21:41.15\00:21:43.18 and we've got an exactly a 4-inch wide piece here. 00:21:43.21\00:21:45.83 Now we're going to do the top cut. 00:21:45.86\00:21:47.04 We're just going to basically shim off the bark 00:21:47.07\00:21:49.52 as much as possible and then we get a nice top cut, 00:21:49.55\00:21:52.03 then we are going to really start making lumber. 00:21:52.06\00:21:55.31 Okay, we want to set it at three 00:21:55.34\00:21:58.94 and you love this three and a quarter. 00:21:58.97\00:22:01.70 Right now we could cut a beam. 00:22:20.76\00:22:22.69 Out of this we can make a four by four beam, 00:22:22.72\00:22:25.58 we could make a one by out of it. 00:22:25.61\00:22:28.22 Whatever dimension now we set this at, 00:22:28.25\00:22:30.29 we can go ahead and cut the dip width of the board. 00:22:30.32\00:22:33.26 Basically, that's how you do it 00:22:40.76\00:22:42.06 and you think that all the lumber 00:22:42.09\00:22:43.76 in that house was cut with a chainsaw 00:22:43.79\00:22:46.68 just like this whether it was two by fours 00:22:46.71\00:22:48.44 two by six cedar paneling, 00:22:48.47\00:22:50.41 everything pretty much was cut this way. 00:22:50.44\00:22:52.95 It's a slow process but we're on a tight income 00:22:52.98\00:22:55.19 it produces some pretty nice lumber. 00:22:55.22\00:22:59.60 I just want to say, you know, 00:22:59.63\00:23:00.77 as we went through these early times of the ministry here. 00:23:00.80\00:23:03.90 We learned some valuable lessons 00:23:03.93\00:23:05.62 and those lessons were learning 00:23:05.65\00:23:07.85 to keep God first in our life, 00:23:07.88\00:23:10.00 learning how to work together as a husband and wife. 00:23:10.03\00:23:12.49 If it wasn't for the fact that Christ was in our relationship. 00:23:12.52\00:23:15.79 I think an experience like what we've gone through here 00:23:15.82\00:23:18.04 probably could have very easily 00:23:18.07\00:23:19.97 caused a young couple to go to a divorce 00:23:20.00\00:23:22.31 because it's not easy doing what we did but that, 00:23:22.34\00:23:24.34 it actually drew us together a lot of ways 00:23:24.37\00:23:26.78 and the other thing that I learned 00:23:26.81\00:23:29.26 was learn to trust in God in every circumstance 00:23:29.29\00:23:33.19 that He would provide our need step by step as we needed that, 00:23:33.22\00:23:36.03 as each door needed to be opened 00:23:36.06\00:23:37.92 we stepped through it God would provide. 00:23:37.95\00:23:40.27 They taught us how to be frugal with money 00:23:40.30\00:23:42.40 because we often times lived on thirty dollars a week 00:23:42.43\00:23:45.94 just to survive up here. 00:23:45.97\00:23:47.72 And it also-- and this may be kind of odd, 00:23:47.75\00:23:51.73 it helped us to prepare us for international ministry 00:23:51.76\00:23:55.68 because as we started going to various different countries 00:23:55.71\00:23:59.07 and in the third world countries, 00:23:59.10\00:24:01.26 to tell you the truth we felt rather comfortable 00:24:01.29\00:24:03.46 because we've been there and we've lived 00:24:03.49\00:24:06.13 without all those luxuries of everyday life 00:24:06.16\00:24:09.74 that so many people enjoy in the city. 00:24:09.77\00:24:12.10 You know, one of the lessons 00:24:12.13\00:24:13.16 I learned in those times of living 00:24:13.19\00:24:16.86 so poorly is that you don't worry about tomorrow 00:24:16.89\00:24:21.81 and I really like this scripture 00:24:21.84\00:24:23.23 that says to "To cast your bread upon the waters" 00:24:23.26\00:24:25.49 because after many days it shall return. 00:24:25.52\00:24:28.08 And I saw that proven so many times we would have-- 00:24:28.11\00:24:32.46 be at the end of some sort of supplies 00:24:32.49\00:24:34.95 and I'm looking at it and I'm thinking 00:24:34.98\00:24:37.06 you know what, how am I going to replace this 00:24:37.09\00:24:39.48 and I'd go ahead and use whatever supplies it was, 00:24:39.51\00:24:43.32 whether it be raisins or fruit 00:24:43.35\00:24:47.32 or whatever it was there for the meal 00:24:47.35\00:24:49.26 and throw the last of it in. 00:24:49.29\00:24:51.55 And within a day or two someone would be showing up 00:24:51.58\00:24:54.34 and they would be trading with us some-- 00:24:54.37\00:24:57.32 for some sort of services or something like that 00:24:57.35\00:25:00.60 and they would be trading date pieces 00:25:00.63\00:25:02.12 or they would be trading prunes 00:25:02.15\00:25:03.72 or they would be trading more raisins and-- 00:25:03.75\00:25:06.16 My faith was just so strengthened 00:25:06.19\00:25:09.13 by those little experiences in life 00:25:09.16\00:25:11.55 when Jesus provided for us. 00:25:11.58\00:25:13.49 And what that did for us 00:25:13.52\00:25:15.88 is rather than having this big picture 00:25:15.91\00:25:18.33 of some kind a big ministry 00:25:18.36\00:25:20.03 it started to help us to realize 00:25:20.06\00:25:21.62 that what ministry really was-- was way a way of life. 00:25:21.65\00:25:24.84 It was who you are in Christ it was, 00:25:24.87\00:25:27.29 you know, getting to know your neighbors 00:25:27.32\00:25:29.69 and to share what little you had 00:25:29.72\00:25:34.02 with other people and that ministry was-- 00:25:34.05\00:25:36.72 is more about giving and taking with people in your community 00:25:36.75\00:25:39.54 and the people you come in contact with everyday life 00:25:39.57\00:25:41.54 and as we started to understand that God started, 00:25:41.57\00:25:45.34 the old saying is that we worked on the plan of addition 00:25:45.37\00:25:47.66 and God start working on the plan of multiplication. 00:25:47.69\00:25:49.80 I remember we're almost out of firewood one winter. 00:25:49.83\00:25:52.77 And one friend came up to my place here 00:25:52.80\00:25:55.93 and he said he needed firewood really bad 00:25:55.96\00:25:58.25 and I said go ahead and take half of what I have 00:25:58.28\00:26:00.28 and I knew that we were going to run out anyhow. 00:26:00.31\00:26:02.64 And soon as I did that within two days 00:26:02.67\00:26:04.48 the Lord opened up a place for us 00:26:04.51\00:26:05.88 where we had unlimited supply of firewood. 00:26:05.91\00:26:08.21 We filled our woodshed for two years 00:26:08.24\00:26:10.43 and then we ended up having enough wood 00:26:10.46\00:26:12.08 to give to couple of other poor families in the community 00:26:12.11\00:26:14.30 and different people that needed some firewood 00:26:14.33\00:26:16.74 like at the one of the church schools here 00:26:16.77\00:26:20.47 in town was burning firewood back in those days 00:26:20.50\00:26:22.31 and we gave firewood to them 00:26:22.34\00:26:23.50 and so by us being willing to sacrifice 00:26:23.53\00:26:25.99 what little we had and sharing it 00:26:26.02\00:26:27.23 with somebody else to help them. 00:26:27.26\00:26:28.91 God ended up pouring more blessings on us 00:26:28.94\00:26:31.07 and you know, that's the Divine Principle 00:26:31.10\00:26:33.06 of how God works with us as Christians. 00:26:33.09\00:26:36.49 As we've been talking about some of experiences 00:26:36.52\00:26:39.05 that we've gone through the years. 00:26:39.08\00:26:41.95 It take me back to a quote 00:26:41.98\00:26:44.28 that was always encouraging to us, 00:26:44.31\00:26:45.94 and it goes kind of like this. 00:26:45.97\00:26:48.04 "It would be well for you to lay by your perplexing cares 00:26:48.07\00:26:51.41 and find a retreat in the country, 00:26:51.44\00:26:53.54 where there's not so strong an influence 00:26:53.57\00:26:55.69 to corrupt the morals of the young. 00:26:55.72\00:26:58.07 True, you would not be entirely free from annoyances 00:26:58.10\00:27:01.30 and perplexing care is in the country, 00:27:01.33\00:27:03.70 but you would there avoid many evils 00:27:03.73\00:27:06.46 and close the door against the flood of temptation 00:27:06.49\00:27:09.72 which threaten to overpower the minds for your children." 00:27:09.75\00:27:13.45 And we just felt that being out here 00:27:13.48\00:27:16.20 in the country was a safe haven for our children. 00:27:16.23\00:27:20.22 It was worth the sacrifice 00:27:20.25\00:27:22.28 and I would encourage any of
