Let's bow our heads for prayer. 00:00:35.17\00:00:36.74 Our Father and our God, it is with reverence 00:00:38.50\00:00:42.79 that we approach Your throne this morning. 00:00:42.82\00:00:46.84 We realize that human wisdom cannot grasp the greatness 00:00:47.82\00:00:53.26 of the plan of salvation. 00:00:53.29\00:00:54.96 And so I ask this morning that You will give me 00:00:55.85\00:00:59.05 thoughts and words to speak about this great theme. 00:00:59.08\00:01:02.82 I also ask that You will give those who are present 00:01:03.51\00:01:06.92 clarity of thought and that You will give us tender hearts 00:01:06.95\00:01:11.34 to hear Your message, and that it might make an impact 00:01:12.23\00:01:16.58 in our lives. 00:01:17.06\00:01:18.67 We ask, Lord, that You will help us to concentrate upon 00:01:19.35\00:01:22.32 what we're going to study. 00:01:22.35\00:01:23.60 And we thank You for hearing our prayer. 00:01:24.21\00:01:26.16 For we ask it in Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:26.19\00:01:29.68 There are many great Messianic prophecies 00:01:31.67\00:01:34.87 in the Old Testament. 00:01:35.77\00:01:37.55 I'd just like to mention a few of them as we begin 00:01:38.47\00:01:41.69 our study this morning. 00:01:41.72\00:01:43.82 Who could forget that great Messianic prophecy of 00:01:44.69\00:01:47.77 Genesis 22, the sacrifice of Isaac. 00:01:47.80\00:01:52.46 Who could forget the meaning of the Hebrew Sanctuary 00:01:53.71\00:01:58.05 where the calendar of the plan of salvation 00:01:58.46\00:02:01.93 is presented from beginning to end. 00:02:01.96\00:02:04.73 Who could forget that great chapter of Isaiah 53 00:02:05.67\00:02:09.33 where we hear about the suffering servant 00:02:10.11\00:02:14.07 who bore our iniquities. 00:02:14.10\00:02:16.80 Who could forget Daniel chapter 9 where you have 00:02:17.56\00:02:21.06 the exact chronology of when the Messiah would be baptized 00:02:21.09\00:02:25.96 and when the Messiah would die. 00:02:25.99\00:02:28.60 But this morning we want to study a certain Messianic 00:02:29.60\00:02:33.75 prophecy, one of the greatest Messianic prophecies 00:02:33.78\00:02:36.94 in all of the Old Testament over and above 00:02:36.97\00:02:39.37 the ones that I've mentioned. 00:02:39.40\00:02:40.89 And that is Psalm 22. 00:02:41.46\00:02:44.91 And so I invite you to open your Bibles with me 00:02:45.43\00:02:47.95 to Psalm 22. 00:02:48.23\00:02:50.70 Now as you're searching for this chapter, 00:02:51.40\00:02:54.08 I'd like to say that students of the psalms, scholars, 00:02:54.51\00:02:59.16 have studied the psalms and they have grouped them 00:02:59.59\00:03:04.30 by categories, by literary type. 00:03:04.33\00:03:07.98 For example, there are royal psalms. 00:03:08.44\00:03:12.30 They are psalms that have to do with kingship, 00:03:12.57\00:03:15.76 with the coronation of kings. 00:03:15.79\00:03:18.47 You have psalms of ascent. 00:03:18.76\00:03:21.22 Those are psalms that were sung as the Jews marched towards 00:03:21.81\00:03:26.29 Jerusalem to celebrate the Hebrew feasts. 00:03:26.32\00:03:29.52 You have psalms of individual praise where an individual 00:03:30.08\00:03:33.68 is rendering honor and glory to God. 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.40 You have psalms of congregational praise 00:03:37.10\00:03:40.22 where you have a whole congregation singing 00:03:40.25\00:03:42.76 in the midst of the psalm. 00:03:42.79\00:03:44.44 You also have psalms which are called psalms of 00:03:45.23\00:03:49.03 individual lament where an individual is expressing 00:03:49.06\00:03:53.53 anguish and pain and suffering in their psalm to God. 00:03:53.56\00:03:59.95 And of course, you have psalms of national lament 00:04:00.34\00:04:03.12 where the whole nation of Israel is lamenting 00:04:03.15\00:04:06.61 some calamity or some problem which has come about 00:04:06.64\00:04:10.85 in the congregation. 00:04:10.88\00:04:12.61 Psalm 22 does not fit strictly into any of these categories. 00:04:14.22\00:04:21.17 It is a strange psalm. 00:04:21.60\00:04:23.60 Because it's a mixture of two different literary types. 00:04:24.49\00:04:29.08 The first half of the psalm from verses 1 through 21 00:04:29.67\00:04:33.08 is actually a psalm of individual lament. 00:04:33.42\00:04:39.12 There's an individual who is suffering anguish 00:04:39.49\00:04:43.61 and suffering pain. 00:04:43.91\00:04:45.68 And he's expressing this anguish to God. 00:04:45.90\00:04:49.39 In the second half of this psalm we have a song of praise 00:04:50.26\00:04:55.50 being raise up by a whole congregation, 00:04:55.53\00:04:58.99 by a whole assembly, where this same individual 00:04:59.51\00:05:03.18 who was in anguish and who was in pain 00:05:03.21\00:05:05.90 is now in the midst of a great congregation. 00:05:06.10\00:05:08.99 And the great congregation is rendering him 00:05:09.02\00:05:12.25 honor, glory, and praise. 00:05:12.28\00:05:16.06 Now some scholars who have studied the psalms 00:05:17.45\00:05:20.70 have concluded that these two sections of Psalm 22 00:05:20.91\00:05:24.91 actually were written by different authors, 00:05:24.94\00:05:27.56 and then an editor came later and he patched the two parts 00:05:27.59\00:05:32.06 of the psalm together. 00:05:32.09\00:05:33.65 Because the two parts are so vastly different. 00:05:34.51\00:05:38.95 But I would like to say this morning that these two 00:05:39.77\00:05:42.74 portions of Psalm 22 are very closely related 00:05:42.77\00:05:48.29 one to another. 00:05:48.32\00:05:49.55 They really belong to the same psalm. 00:05:49.82\00:05:52.61 Now another thing which scholars have done 00:05:53.31\00:05:55.74 is to try and determine the historical occasion 00:05:55.85\00:05:59.41 which led to the writing of the particular psalm. 00:05:59.44\00:06:03.77 For example, Psalm 41 is when Achitophel, who was the enemy 00:06:04.22\00:06:10.19 of David, sided with Absalom in Absalom's rebellion 00:06:10.62\00:06:16.73 against the king. 00:06:16.76\00:06:18.03 It was written for that particular 00:06:18.06\00:06:19.57 historical circumstance. 00:06:19.60\00:06:21.52 Psalm 2, scholars all agree that this psalm was written 00:06:21.79\00:06:25.82 to celebrate the coronation of David as king of Israel. 00:06:26.16\00:06:30.81 In other words, scholars have studied the psalms 00:06:30.84\00:06:32.90 to try and determine what historical circumstances 00:06:32.93\00:06:36.11 led to the writing of the particular psalms. 00:06:36.14\00:06:40.78 In the case of Psalm 22, we know that the writer was David. 00:06:41.35\00:06:45.77 Now as we look at the life of David, we find many episodes 00:06:47.43\00:06:51.27 where he's crying out to God. 00:06:51.30\00:06:53.10 We find many places where David is suffering anguish. 00:06:53.64\00:06:57.22 For example, when he was fleeing from Saul 00:06:57.25\00:07:00.10 when Saul was coming after him and trying to destroy him. 00:07:00.13\00:07:04.95 We have many psalms where David is describing 00:07:05.15\00:07:07.84 that experience. 00:07:07.87\00:07:09.55 But Psalm 22 expresses an anguish, expresses such a 00:07:10.13\00:07:16.83 deep suffering on the part of the person who is actually 00:07:16.86\00:07:21.06 uttering the words of this psalm, that scholars have 00:07:21.09\00:07:24.09 not been able to find any particular episode of the 00:07:24.12\00:07:26.96 life of David which fits the experience that is described 00:07:26.99\00:07:31.25 in this psalm. 00:07:31.56\00:07:33.04 It appears that this particular psalm, Psalm 22, is actually 00:07:33.55\00:07:39.00 a direct Messianic prophecy. 00:07:39.03\00:07:42.20 In other words, it did not commemorate any historical 00:07:42.23\00:07:46.08 event in the history of Israel, but rather is a direct 00:07:46.11\00:07:50.04 Messianic prophecy which pointed forward to the future. 00:07:50.07\00:07:54.42 As we examine the psalm, in fact, we discover 00:07:55.81\00:07:58.82 that David was allowed to look forward through the corridors 00:07:58.85\00:08:04.70 of time to experience the thoughts and the feelings 00:08:04.73\00:08:09.47 of Jesus the Messiah when Jesus was going to go 00:08:09.50\00:08:13.19 through His passion in the garden of Gethsemane 00:08:13.22\00:08:17.04 and on the cross of Calvary. 00:08:17.07\00:08:19.60 As we examine the psalm, there's no doubt whatsoever 00:08:19.98\00:08:23.06 that this is describing directly the experience of the Messiah. 00:08:23.09\00:08:28.55 Now we're going to work through this psalm and we're going to 00:08:29.26\00:08:31.77 study the two sections that we find of this 00:08:31.80\00:08:35.08 particular passage of Scripture. 00:08:35.11\00:08:37.59 Verses 1 through 21, the deep anguish which is being suffered 00:08:38.18\00:08:43.35 by this individual. 00:08:43.38\00:08:44.84 Verses 22 to 31, this same individual in the midst of a 00:08:45.04\00:08:49.71 great congregation and He is receiving honor and praise 00:08:49.74\00:08:54.45 from a great multitude. 00:08:54.48\00:08:57.17 Now let's go to Psalm 22 and read verses 1 and 2. 00:08:57.37\00:09:03.52 And you're going to recognize immediately at the beginning 00:09:03.92\00:09:07.50 of verse 1 something that you've read in the gospel of Matthew. 00:09:07.53\00:09:12.22 It says there... 00:09:12.25\00:09:13.32 Immediately, we remember the words of Jesus 00:09:39.69\00:09:42.53 when He was hanging on the cross of Calvary 00:09:42.56\00:09:45.27 close to a thousand years later. 00:09:45.47\00:09:48.09 "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" 00:09:48.19\00:09:52.08 And it's interesting that the gospel writers, 00:09:52.31\00:09:54.75 when they register these words, they actually write them 00:09:54.78\00:09:58.40 in Aramaic, which is the language which Jesus 00:09:58.43\00:10:01.84 most likely spoke in. 00:10:01.87\00:10:03.92 And in the Aramaic language, you can sense the anguish 00:10:04.25\00:10:07.73 that Jesus was going through. 00:10:07.93\00:10:10.15 The words, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" 00:10:10.18\00:10:14.22 "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" 00:10:14.25\00:10:18.83 In the gospels, Jesus is claiming this psalm as His own. 00:10:20.16\00:10:24.92 He's saying, "This psalm is about Me." 00:10:25.23\00:10:28.35 You see, Jesus had memorized Scripture. 00:10:28.72\00:10:31.38 And as we've studied in other venues, we've noticed 00:10:31.41\00:10:35.06 that the life of Jesus was actually choreographed 00:10:35.09\00:10:38.47 from eternity. 00:10:38.50\00:10:39.80 Jesus knew on the cross that these were the words 00:10:39.83\00:10:43.63 which He was to proclaim. 00:10:43.66\00:10:45.90 He had committed them deeply in His memory, 00:10:45.93\00:10:49.19 deep in His psyche. 00:10:49.22\00:10:51.27 Now you notice in these first two verses 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.41 that a mention is made of Jesus, or the Messiah, 00:10:54.44\00:10:58.17 crying out day and night. 00:10:58.20\00:11:02.43 Now undoubtedly, the night that is referred to here 00:11:03.72\00:11:07.43 is the experience of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, 00:11:07.46\00:11:12.18 where we're told in the gospel of Matthew that He held 00:11:12.53\00:11:15.34 a mysterious cup in His hand. 00:11:15.37\00:11:17.59 And He begged His Father if it be possible 00:11:17.62\00:11:20.33 to remove this cup of suffering, this cup of God's wrath, 00:11:20.36\00:11:24.88 from His hand. 00:11:24.91\00:11:25.96 In other words, this anguish was experienced 00:11:25.99\00:11:29.66 by Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. 00:11:29.69\00:11:32.64 In fact, we're told in the spirit of prophecy that 00:11:32.67\00:11:35.17 His anguish was so intense and so great, His suffering 00:11:35.20\00:11:39.25 was so intense that Jesus would have died in the 00:11:39.28\00:11:43.57 garden of Gethsemane had it not been for an angel 00:11:43.60\00:11:46.93 that came and strengthened Him. 00:11:46.96\00:11:49.52 So deep was His anguish. 00:11:50.10\00:11:51.99 You know, you've probably watched the movie that 00:11:52.02\00:11:54.91 Mel Gibson directed, The Passion of the Christ, 00:11:54.94\00:11:59.28 and you see how Jesus was beaten. 00:11:59.48\00:12:01.09 But have you ever realized that Jesus was at the point of death 00:12:01.12\00:12:05.11 before anyone laid one finger on Him? 00:12:05.14\00:12:07.88 Because of the spiritual anguish which He was 00:12:08.23\00:12:11.24 suffering intensely. 00:12:11.27\00:12:13.33 And up to this point, we're told in John 8 verse 29 00:12:13.89\00:12:17.07 that Jesus said, "My Father has not left Me alone. 00:12:17.10\00:12:21.38 He is always with Me. 00:12:21.41\00:12:23.16 Because I do the things that are pleasing in His sight." 00:12:23.19\00:12:26.32 But now Jesus cries out, "My God, My God, 00:12:26.89\00:12:30.11 why hast Thou forsaken Me?" 00:12:30.14\00:12:31.71 And the cup of God's wrath trembles in His hand, 00:12:31.74\00:12:35.67 and He begs His Father to remove the cup if it be possible. 00:12:35.70\00:12:39.67 And the only answer of His Father is a deafening silence. 00:12:39.70\00:12:45.00 Apparently He has been forsaken. 00:12:45.03\00:12:48.10 Now let's move on to verses 3 through 5. 00:12:48.67\00:12:52.00 It's interesting that here the holiness of God 00:13:13.99\00:13:17.50 is brought into view. 00:13:17.53\00:13:18.91 "You are holy." 00:13:18.94\00:13:20.62 You see, Jesus was suffering under the holy wrath 00:13:20.86\00:13:24.43 of His Father. 00:13:24.46\00:13:25.91 That's why His Father apparently was not there, though He was. 00:13:25.94\00:13:30.28 Because the Father withdrew His presence, His face, 00:13:30.61\00:13:34.77 from Jesus because Jesus was bearing upon Himself 00:13:34.80\00:13:38.14 the sins of the world. 00:13:38.17\00:13:40.27 And you'll notice in these verses that Jesus says, 00:13:40.82\00:13:43.49 "Our fathers cried out to You and You listened to Our fathers. 00:13:43.52\00:13:46.79 You delivered Our fathers." 00:13:46.82\00:13:48.81 Now the question is, what event was Jesus referring to 00:13:48.84\00:13:53.15 when He said that, "You heard the cries of Our fathers 00:13:53.18\00:13:58.00 and You delivered them." 00:13:58.03\00:13:59.57 There can be no doubt that Jesus here is referring 00:14:00.08\00:14:03.82 to what happened in Egypt when Israel was captive to Pharaoh 00:14:04.08\00:14:08.89 and to his hosts. 00:14:08.92\00:14:10.52 In fact, notice Exodus chapter 2 and verses 23 to 25. 00:14:10.55\00:14:14.46 Save your place there in Psalm 22. 00:14:14.49\00:14:16.71 Exodus chapter 2 and verses 23 to 25. 00:14:16.74\00:14:21.20 It says there... 00:14:21.71\00:14:23.00 Notice the terminology. 00:14:29.27\00:14:30.80 So Israel cried out to God. 00:14:54.48\00:14:57.12 And God delivered them from bondage. 00:14:57.15\00:14:59.83 But here Jesus is saying, "Our fathers cried out. 00:14:59.86\00:15:03.03 You delivered them. 00:15:03.06\00:15:04.24 But I cry out and there is no deliverance. 00:15:04.27\00:15:08.38 You don't listen to what I'm saying. 00:15:08.58\00:15:10.47 You don't answer." 00:15:10.50\00:15:12.05 Now it's interesting to notice the particular occasion 00:15:12.90\00:15:15.82 in which Israel cried out and Israel was delivered. 00:15:15.85\00:15:19.19 Do you remember in Exodus chapter 12 that Israel 00:15:19.84\00:15:22.97 celebrated the Passover when they were about 00:15:23.00\00:15:26.96 to be delivered from Egypt? 00:15:26.99\00:15:28.92 Have you also noticed that Jesus, according to the 00:15:30.10\00:15:33.36 apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians chapter 5 verses 7 and 8, 00:15:33.39\00:15:37.26 tells us that Jesus, our Passover, has been 00:15:37.29\00:15:40.76 sacrificed for us? 00:15:40.79\00:15:42.47 So Jesus is saying, "Your people, the fathers, 00:15:42.81\00:15:46.16 cried out to You at Passover, and through the blood of 00:15:46.19\00:15:49.54 the lamb You delivered them. 00:15:49.57\00:15:51.34 But now I am the Passover and I cry out, 00:15:51.37\00:15:55.14 and there is no answer from You." 00:15:56.01\00:15:57.96 Deafening silence. 00:15:58.52\00:16:00.93 Let's move on to verses 6 and 7. 00:16:01.51\00:16:04.01 Jesus is expressing His innermost feelings. 00:16:04.64\00:16:07.76 This is a thousand years before the events are taking place. 00:16:07.79\00:16:11.15 This is a Messianic prophecy. 00:16:11.18\00:16:12.94 Notice the perspective that Jesus has of His sufferings. 00:16:12.97\00:16:16.77 He says... 00:16:16.80\00:16:17.83 Kind of reminds us of Isaiah 53. 00:16:30.42\00:16:33.05 He was despised and He was rejected. 00:16:33.08\00:16:36.29 Verse 7... 00:16:36.62\00:16:37.68 Do you know that these are the very words which were spoken 00:16:57.74\00:17:00.84 by the enemies of Jesus as Jesus hung on the cross? 00:17:00.87\00:17:04.91 No doubt, as Jesus was on the cross crying out, 00:17:05.19\00:17:07.98 "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me," 00:17:08.01\00:17:10.61 Psalm 22 was coming to His mind. 00:17:10.64\00:17:13.03 When He saw His enemies gathered around the cross 00:17:13.24\00:17:16.55 ridiculing Him, Jesus undoubtedly thought 00:17:16.58\00:17:20.26 about the words of this psalm, "Prophecy is being fulfilled 00:17:20.29\00:17:24.61 before My very eyes." 00:17:24.64\00:17:26.67 Notice Matthew 27 and verses 39 to 43. 00:17:26.70\00:17:30.78 Matthew 27 and verse 39. 00:17:30.81\00:17:34.00 It says there, "And those who passed by blasphemed Him 00:17:35.11\00:17:40.20 wagging their heads..." 00:17:40.73\00:17:42.25 Remember Psalm 22 where we just read? 00:17:42.28\00:17:44.80 "...and saying, 'You who destroy the temple 00:17:45.00\00:17:48.05 and build it in three days, save Yourself. 00:17:48.08\00:17:51.64 If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.' 00:17:51.67\00:17:55.25 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes 00:17:55.76\00:17:59.89 and elders, said, 'He saved others; Himself He cannot save. 00:17:59.92\00:18:04.94 If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down 00:18:05.25\00:18:09.17 from the cross and we will believe in Him.'" 00:18:09.20\00:18:12.36 And now comes the direct quotation from Psalm 22. 00:18:12.39\00:18:16.46 "He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now 00:18:16.49\00:18:20.53 if He will have Him. 00:18:20.56\00:18:22.19 For He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" 00:18:22.22\00:18:26.35 And so as Jesus is hanging on the cross, He's thinking about 00:18:27.28\00:18:31.08 the words of this psalm. 00:18:31.11\00:18:33.32 And undoubtedly, He's saying, "Prophecy is being fulfilled 00:18:33.35\00:18:37.42 before My very eyes in My very own experience." 00:18:37.45\00:18:42.02 Let's go to verses 9 through 11. 00:18:42.70\00:18:44.91 Psalm 22 verses 9 through 11. 00:18:46.10\00:18:48.59 He's speaking to His Father. 00:18:53.07\00:18:54.59 "You took Me out of the womb." 00:18:54.62\00:18:55.95 In other words, "You delivered Me when I was born." 00:18:55.98\00:18:58.69 He's saying, "You delivered the fathers when they 00:19:20.46\00:19:22.83 cried out to You. 00:19:22.86\00:19:23.93 You delivered Me when I was born. 00:19:23.96\00:19:26.56 But now I cry out to You and there is no one to help. 00:19:26.59\00:19:31.69 I am by Myself. I am alone. 00:19:31.72\00:19:34.16 Why have You forsaken Me? 00:19:34.19\00:19:36.61 Why can't You remove this cup of suffering and of anguish?" 00:19:36.64\00:19:41.53 Up till verse 11, we have a description of the 00:19:42.56\00:19:46.38 psychological suffering of Jesus. 00:19:46.41\00:19:48.51 The spiritual suffering of Jesus. 00:19:48.54\00:19:50.30 Not much has been said about His physical suffering. 00:19:50.65\00:19:53.38 But now beginning with verse 12 through verse 21, 00:19:53.58\00:19:56.61 We're going to find a description of His 00:19:56.64\00:19:58.77 physical sufferings. 00:19:58.80\00:20:00.84 Notice verses 12 and 13. 00:20:01.18\00:20:03.62 By the way, bulls represent great leaders in Israel. 00:20:07.00\00:20:11.09 You know, animals were used to represent leaders. 00:20:11.12\00:20:14.54 He goats and bulls represented, and rams, represented 00:20:14.57\00:20:20.06 great leaders. 00:20:20.09\00:20:21.21 And so it says... 00:20:21.67\00:20:22.71 You notice here that we have a reference to the bulls of Bashan 00:20:35.97\00:20:39.47 and to a roaring lion. 00:20:39.50\00:20:40.98 Of course, the roaring lion represents Satan 00:20:41.01\00:20:43.90 who goes about as a roaring lion seeking whom 00:20:43.93\00:20:47.19 he may devour. 00:20:47.22\00:20:48.56 Now Bashan was an area east of the Jordon River 00:20:48.96\00:20:53.33 that was very, very rich in pasture land. 00:20:53.45\00:20:56.97 And it was famous in biblical times for their bulls. 00:20:57.00\00:21:00.81 The bulls were huge and they were ferocious. 00:21:00.99\00:21:04.95 In other words, Jesus is saying, "My enemies are standing 00:21:04.98\00:21:08.46 next to Me, the devil is standing next to Me 00:21:08.49\00:21:11.10 like a roaring lion. 00:21:11.13\00:21:12.44 And they're ready to pounce on Me and to destroy Me 00:21:12.47\00:21:16.93 and to extinguish My life." 00:21:16.96\00:21:19.60 And then notice verse 14. 00:21:20.16\00:21:22.16 Another fulfillment of prophecy later on in the 00:21:22.19\00:21:25.91 ministry of Jesus. 00:21:25.94\00:21:27.18 In fact, when Jesus hung on the cross, He says... 00:21:27.21\00:21:29.91 You know, in 1968 they discovered in the Kidron Valley 00:21:43.16\00:21:47.27 the body of an individual who had been crucified 00:21:47.30\00:21:50.35 by the Romans. 00:21:50.38\00:21:51.61 And it helped us understand a little bit better 00:21:51.88\00:21:54.53 the method of crucifixion which the Romans used. 00:21:54.56\00:21:58.06 You know, they did not put the nails through the hand 00:21:58.51\00:22:03.19 of the criminal, but rather through the wrists, 00:22:03.65\00:22:07.48 it was discovered. 00:22:07.51\00:22:08.79 It was also discovered that the nails were not placed 00:22:08.98\00:22:12.35 through the feet, but the feet were actually placed 00:22:12.38\00:22:15.27 side by side, and then a spike was nailed through 00:22:15.30\00:22:20.06 both of the ankles into the cross. 00:22:20.09\00:22:23.50 This is the type of anguish and pain which Jesus was suffering. 00:22:24.00\00:22:28.30 You see, crucifixion was not only an execution. 00:22:28.33\00:22:31.64 Crucifixion was actually suffering with torture. 00:22:31.67\00:22:36.76 It was a method of torture. 00:22:36.79\00:22:39.02 You know, Jesus had been beaten several times 00:22:40.27\00:22:43.45 before He actually got to the cross. 00:22:43.48\00:22:45.87 And as He was hanging there, you know how the story goes, 00:22:45.90\00:22:48.80 He had been on the cross about six hours. 00:22:48.83\00:22:50.76 And the Sabbath drew on. 00:22:51.27\00:22:53.03 And so they felt that they needed to take the bodies 00:22:53.22\00:22:56.07 off of the crosses. 00:22:56.10\00:22:57.49 And so the soldier comes and he breaks the legs 00:22:57.52\00:23:01.26 of the two thieves. 00:23:01.29\00:23:02.63 And when he comes to Jesus to break His legs, 00:23:03.11\00:23:05.59 suddenly he's surprised. 00:23:05.62\00:23:08.52 Because this individual who has been on the cross 00:23:08.91\00:23:11.75 only six hours is dead. 00:23:11.78\00:23:14.10 You see, it was known in antiquity for individuals 00:23:14.69\00:23:17.82 to live on crosses for up to a week. 00:23:17.85\00:23:20.57 And here, this Man had died only in a period of six hours 00:23:21.06\00:23:26.79 of being on the cross. 00:23:26.82\00:23:28.24 And so this soldier, surprised by what he has seen, 00:23:28.49\00:23:31.77 the centurion, he takes the spear and he thrusts the spear 00:23:31.97\00:23:36.08 through the side of Jesus. 00:23:36.11\00:23:37.39 And suddenly, out of the side of Jesus comes water 00:23:37.42\00:23:42.10 mixed with what? 00:23:42.49\00:23:44.34 With blood. 00:23:44.95\00:23:46.26 Now, physicians know that this is a sign that Jesus actually 00:23:47.07\00:23:54.72 died probably of a heart attack. 00:23:55.17\00:23:57.52 You know, when an individual is in severe anguish, 00:23:57.78\00:24:00.66 severe stress, the water sack around the heart 00:24:01.43\00:24:06.16 grows larger and it pressures the heart. 00:24:07.25\00:24:09.85 And in some instances it can cause a heart attack. 00:24:10.14\00:24:14.24 And that's the reason why when this centurion thrust his spear, 00:24:14.60\00:24:18.64 Jesus was actually poured out, as it says in Psalm 22, 00:24:18.87\00:24:22.70 poured out like water. 00:24:22.73\00:24:24.23 His heart melted like what? 00:24:24.26\00:24:27.30 His heart melted like wax. 00:24:27.33\00:24:30.04 And so out of His side came water mixed with blood. 00:24:30.56\00:24:35.11 Notice verse 15 of Psalm 22. 00:24:35.90\00:24:38.91 Jesus is expressing His experience, He says... 00:24:39.41\00:24:41.89 Have you ever seen a potsherd, a piece of pottery? 00:24:45.16\00:24:47.79 Very, very dry. 00:24:48.21\00:24:49.98 Of course, Jesus at this point has lost a great 00:24:50.29\00:24:52.98 amount of blood. 00:24:53.01\00:24:54.15 And so He says... 00:24:54.18\00:24:55.21 You know, that's a sign of shock. 00:25:01.24\00:25:03.06 For those of you who know the symptoms of shock, 00:25:03.09\00:25:06.76 an individual who goes into shock, 00:25:06.79\00:25:08.33 you know, their mouth becomes dry. 00:25:08.36\00:25:10.95 And that's why Jesus said on the cross, "I..." What? 00:25:11.27\00:25:15.70 "I thirst." 00:25:16.00\00:25:17.40 And then I want you to notice the last part of verse 15, 00:25:17.68\00:25:20.98 "My strength is dried up like a potsherd, 00:25:21.01\00:25:23.29 and my tongue clings to My Jaws." 00:25:23.32\00:25:26.25 And now notice, "You have brought Me 00:25:26.45\00:25:28.78 to the dust of death." 00:25:28.81\00:25:31.35 Let me ask you, did this suffering individual die? 00:25:32.05\00:25:36.22 Yes. 00:25:36.77\00:25:37.86 He says, "You have brought Me to the dust of..." What? 00:25:38.16\00:25:41.68 "You have brought Me to the dust of death." 00:25:41.71\00:25:43.65 In other words, this individual died. 00:25:43.68\00:25:46.08 That is a very, very important detail. 00:25:46.11\00:25:48.75 Now notice verses 16 through 18. 00:25:50.02\00:25:52.51 Here Jesus says, "For dogs..." 00:25:53.61\00:25:55.74 A sign of the unconverted. 00:25:55.77\00:25:57.50 Those who have not committed their lives to God. 00:25:57.53\00:26:00.02 And now notice the clear references to the Messiah. 00:26:06.87\00:26:09.35 Was Jesus really at this point emaciated 00:26:17.98\00:26:22.37 that they could count all His bones? 00:26:22.81\00:26:25.58 He continues saying, "They look and stare at Me." 00:26:26.32\00:26:29.53 Because at this point, Jesus was stark naked. 00:26:29.84\00:26:32.66 We're going to notice that in the next verse, verse 18. 00:26:33.58\00:26:36.34 So Jesus is hanging naked on the cross. 00:26:44.22\00:26:46.27 You know, usually the artist will depict Him as covered 00:26:46.30\00:26:49.12 with loincloth. 00:26:49.15\00:26:51.08 That's not what Scripture teaches. 00:26:51.44\00:26:53.25 That's not what the Romans did. 00:26:53.73\00:26:55.22 The Romans would hang the criminal stark naked, 00:26:55.26\00:26:58.23 and people would look at them and make fun of them. 00:26:58.26\00:27:01.36 And so the garments of Jesus are removed. 00:27:01.59\00:27:04.26 They cast lots over Him. 00:27:04.29\00:27:06.20 They pierced His hands and His feet. 00:27:06.23\00:27:09.56 And His enemies have surrounded Him. 00:27:09.91\00:27:12.14 All of this is in Psalm 22, a thousand years before 00:27:12.17\00:27:16.11 it occurred to Jesus. 00:27:16.14\00:27:18.12 And then notice verses 19 through 21. 00:27:18.50\00:27:20.98 We reach the climax of His sufferings. 00:27:21.01\00:27:23.51 It says there in verse 19, "But You, O Lord, 00:27:23.54\00:27:27.04 do not be far from Me. 00:27:27.51\00:27:29.47 O My Strength, hasten to help Me!" 00:27:29.50\00:27:32.76 Notice, He's crying out to His Father, "Help Me." 00:27:32.79\00:27:35.59 "Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the 00:27:36.25\00:27:41.31 power of the dog. 00:27:41.34\00:27:43.46 Save Me from the lion's mouth..." 00:27:43.83\00:27:45.78 Notice, He's using all these metaphors. 00:27:45.81\00:27:47.92 He's using this symbolic language to describe 00:27:47.95\00:27:50.71 His experience. 00:27:50.74\00:27:51.77 He says, "Save Me from the lion's mouth 00:27:51.80\00:27:54.13 and from the horns of the wild oxen!" 00:27:54.16\00:27:57.29 Very sharp horns. 00:27:57.32\00:27:59.32 And then the person who is suffering in this psalm 00:28:00.95\00:28:05.07 says some very significant words in the midst of this suffering. 00:28:05.10\00:28:08.67 Notice what He says, "You have..." What? 00:28:08.81\00:28:13.02 "You have answered Me." 00:28:13.22\00:28:16.77 And so the first part of this psalm ends by Him saying, 00:28:18.00\00:28:21.05 "You have answered Me." 00:28:21.08\00:28:22.69 Here He's hanging on the cross. 00:28:23.48\00:28:25.31 He has His hands, or His wrists, and His feet that have been 00:28:26.18\00:28:34.77 pierced by these spikes. 00:28:34.80\00:28:38.14 He feels abandoned by His Father. 00:28:38.48\00:28:40.70 And yet He says here, "You have answered Me." 00:28:42.74\00:28:48.25 You know, you sense this, when Jesus is on the cross, 00:28:48.78\00:28:51.59 you sense this ambivalence of Jesus where He feels 00:28:52.26\00:28:55.35 forsaken, but He knows He's not forsaken. 00:28:55.38\00:28:57.67 Because Jesus did not guide His life by circumstances 00:28:58.14\00:29:01.12 and feelings and by emotions. 00:29:01.15\00:29:03.61 He depended on the promises of His Father. 00:29:04.07\00:29:06.52 It's interesting that Jesus says, "My God, My God, 00:29:07.68\00:29:10.78 why hast Thou forsaken Me," but then the last thing He says 00:29:10.81\00:29:15.07 on the cross is, "Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit." 00:29:15.10\00:29:19.81 Even though He felt separated from His Father, 00:29:20.35\00:29:22.82 He says, "I know that You have not separated from Me. 00:29:22.85\00:29:26.24 Because You promised that if I was faithful to You, 00:29:26.27\00:29:28.76 You would come and You would resurrect Me on the third day. 00:29:28.79\00:29:32.45 I feel terrible, but I believe Your promise." 00:29:32.62\00:29:37.24 You know, that has a great lesson for us. 00:29:37.27\00:29:39.41 Because we usually have the tendency of guiding our lives 00:29:39.44\00:29:42.47 by feelings and by emotions, how we feel. 00:29:42.50\00:29:44.83 Or by circumstances. 00:29:44.86\00:29:46.42 Jesus did not do that. 00:29:46.52\00:29:48.35 He felt forsaken, and yet He says, "You have answered Me." 00:29:48.38\00:29:55.54 And then we come to the second half of this psalm. 00:29:56.34\00:29:58.80 This same individual is standing in the midst 00:30:00.41\00:30:05.05 of a great congregation. 00:30:05.08\00:30:08.00 And this congregation is rendering Him honor 00:30:09.20\00:30:12.53 and glory and praise. 00:30:12.56\00:30:15.13 Now immediately you say, "Now wait a minute. 00:30:15.91\00:30:18.30 Didn't we just read that this individual died?" 00:30:18.92\00:30:24.57 Did we read that He died? 00:30:25.02\00:30:26.47 That God laid Him in the dust of the earth? 00:30:26.79\00:30:29.24 Absolutely. 00:30:29.27\00:30:30.38 And so you say, "How can you see Him in the midst 00:30:30.84\00:30:34.50 of a great congregation if He died?" 00:30:34.53\00:30:38.27 It must mean that He what? 00:30:39.30\00:30:41.59 It must mean that He resurrected. 00:30:42.73\00:30:44.99 Now the psalm doesn't say so. 00:30:45.68\00:30:47.54 But by implication, if He's going through this suffering, 00:30:48.47\00:30:51.80 if He's laid in the dust of the earth, 00:30:51.95\00:30:54.02 and then afterwards He's standing in the midst of a 00:30:54.29\00:30:57.18 great congregation that is rendering Him honor and glory 00:30:57.21\00:31:01.10 and praise, it must be that after His death He, what? 00:31:01.13\00:31:06.28 After His death He resurrected. 00:31:06.38\00:31:08.95 Notice verses 22 and 23. 00:31:09.05\00:31:11.79 He says this... 00:31:12.84\00:31:14.30 And remember that He has just said, "You have heard Me." 00:31:14.33\00:31:18.16 He dies knowing that the Father has heard Him. 00:31:18.74\00:31:21.36 Even though He doesn't feel like the Father has heard Him. 00:31:21.39\00:31:24.67 "For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction 00:31:48.25\00:31:51.60 of the afflicted, nor has He hidden His face from Him; 00:31:51.63\00:31:56.61 but when He cried to Him, He..." What? 00:31:57.11\00:32:00.03 "...He heard." 00:32:00.39\00:32:01.75 In other words, the question is, was the prayer of this suffering 00:32:02.38\00:32:06.35 servant heard by His Father?" 00:32:06.38\00:32:08.70 Yes, He now stands in the midst of a great congregation 00:32:08.73\00:32:12.45 and He describes those who are there as His brethren. 00:32:12.48\00:32:18.47 By the way, do you know that this portion of Psalm 22 00:32:19.12\00:32:22.98 is actually quoted in Hebrews chapter 2 00:32:23.01\00:32:26.60 and verses 10 through 13? 00:32:26.63\00:32:28.70 Where we're told in short that Jesus is not ashamed 00:32:29.73\00:32:34.33 to call us what? 00:32:34.36\00:32:36.05 Is not ashamed to call us brethren. 00:32:36.08\00:32:38.88 In other words, He sees Himself, after His suffering... 00:32:39.45\00:32:43.28 And undoubtedly, this strengthened the mind of Jesus 00:32:43.49\00:32:46.17 as He was going through this experience. 00:32:46.20\00:32:47.87 He sees Himself in the midst of this great congregation 00:32:47.90\00:32:51.80 with His brethren. 00:32:51.83\00:32:54.05 Notice verse 25. 00:32:54.79\00:32:56.65 Notice, "The poor shall eat and be satisfied. 00:33:06.98\00:33:10.53 Those who seek Him will praise the Lord. 00:33:10.56\00:33:12.97 Let your heart live forever." 00:33:13.00\00:33:15.24 So you have the sons of Jacob, Israel, praising Him. 00:33:16.25\00:33:19.69 According to verse 25, you have the poor and the destitute 00:33:19.72\00:33:23.63 praising Him in the midst of the congregation. 00:33:23.66\00:33:26.68 Then it goes broader. 00:33:27.09\00:33:28.57 Notice verse 27, it says... 00:33:28.60\00:33:30.90 "For the kingdom is the Lord's, and He rules over the nations." 00:33:39.72\00:33:44.07 And so it begins with Israel, with Jacob, that small circle 00:33:44.17\00:33:48.18 of the Israelites. 00:33:48.21\00:33:50.21 And then it moves to the poor and to the afflicted. 00:33:50.24\00:33:53.46 Then it moves to every nation on planet earth. 00:33:53.49\00:33:57.70 In other word, the praise and the honor is growing globally. 00:33:57.73\00:34:02.75 Notice verse 29, "All the prosperous..." 00:34:03.41\00:34:06.75 Now the rich come into view. 00:34:06.78\00:34:08.44 The consecrated rich, that is. 00:34:08.47\00:34:10.56 "All the prosperous of the earth shall eat and worship. 00:34:10.59\00:34:14.55 All those who go down to the dust shall bow before Him." 00:34:14.89\00:34:19.57 Notice that, "...shall bow before Him, even he 00:34:19.60\00:34:22.65 who cannot keep himself alive." 00:34:22.68\00:34:25.56 What does that mean? 00:34:26.20\00:34:27.23 Even he who cannot keep himself alive 00:34:27.26\00:34:29.69 is going to praise the Lord? 00:34:29.72\00:34:31.10 It must be that they, what? 00:34:31.22\00:34:32.77 That they died and they resurrected. 00:34:32.80\00:34:36.03 Because those who were not able to keep themselves alive 00:34:36.78\00:34:40.23 will also come and praise Him, according to verse 29. 00:34:40.26\00:34:44.96 So not only the living, but also those who die 00:34:44.99\00:34:48.60 and are resurrected. 00:34:48.63\00:34:50.32 Notice verses 30 and 31. 00:34:51.10\00:34:53.14 In other words, those who as yet had not been born 00:35:09.06\00:35:12.84 when Jesus performed this work on the cross 00:35:12.87\00:35:16.00 were going to hear about this. 00:35:16.20\00:35:17.79 And they were going to be present to render Him 00:35:17.82\00:35:20.18 honor and glory and praise. 00:35:20.21\00:35:23.45 Now the question is, when is this going to be fulfilled? 00:35:24.60\00:35:29.65 When is it that all of God's people; 00:35:30.16\00:35:35.11 the people of the Messiah, the sons of Jacob, 00:35:36.45\00:35:38.74 the people from every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, 00:35:39.66\00:35:42.62 the rich and the poor, 00:35:42.82\00:35:45.07 those who died and those who resurrected, 00:35:45.37\00:35:48.31 when is it that the entire universe is going to render 00:35:49.89\00:35:53.62 Jesus honor and glory and praise? 00:35:54.99\00:35:58.90 Well you know, it's when all of His people are together 00:35:59.94\00:36:04.00 in the kingdom. 00:36:04.21\00:36:05.40 Notice Philippians chapter 2. 00:36:06.16\00:36:07.93 Which we've read many times before, 00:36:07.96\00:36:09.86 and I want to read it again. 00:36:09.89\00:36:11.40 Philippians 2 verses 5 through 11. 00:36:11.43\00:36:13.92 Because we're talking about the law of life and death. 00:36:13.95\00:36:18.06 The law of death is to exalt yourself. 00:36:18.09\00:36:21.26 God says, "I'll humble you." 00:36:21.29\00:36:22.77 The law of life is to humble yourself. 00:36:23.31\00:36:26.13 And God will what? Exalt you. 00:36:26.16\00:36:28.05 Do we find a clear reference to humbling in this psalm? 00:36:28.08\00:36:31.87 Sure. 00:36:32.99\00:36:34.02 Death of a cross? Yes. 00:36:34.36\00:36:36.25 Sub-human level? Yes. 00:36:36.97\00:36:39.68 But then do we find Jesus being exalted 00:36:40.55\00:36:43.32 and praised by the whole universe? 00:36:43.35\00:36:45.20 Absolutely. 00:36:45.23\00:36:46.26 Notice how this is developed in Philippians 2. 00:36:46.29\00:36:48.74 A better translation, as I've mentioned before, 00:36:59.09\00:37:01.14 is, "did not consider equality with God 00:37:01.17\00:37:03.98 and something to be grasped." 00:37:04.01\00:37:06.38 Notice that even when He was a Man already, 00:37:19.19\00:37:21.24 "He humbled Himself..." 00:37:21.27\00:37:23.23 There's the first part of the psalm. 00:37:27.97\00:37:29.60 And now notice the second half of the psalm. 00:37:30.66\00:37:32.78 By the way, that hasn't happened yet. 00:37:50.33\00:37:52.60 The ones under the earth have not done it yet. 00:37:53.28\00:37:55.82 Those are the people who have died. 00:37:55.85\00:37:58.39 And not everybody on earth who is alive is doing that 00:37:58.60\00:38:02.80 at present either. 00:38:02.83\00:38:04.41 And so it says... 00:38:04.96\00:38:05.99 There you have the second part of Psalm 22, 00:38:12.84\00:38:15.89 the exaltation of Jesus. 00:38:15.92\00:38:17.59 He who humbled Himself will be what? 00:38:17.62\00:38:21.12 Will be exalted and placed on the throne of the universe. 00:38:21.15\00:38:26.58 We find another scene similar to this in Revelation 5:11-13. 00:38:27.12\00:38:32.32 If you'll go with me. 00:38:32.35\00:38:33.60 Revelation chapter 5 and verses 11 to 13 00:38:33.86\00:38:36.49 speaks about this explosion of praise. 00:38:36.52\00:38:39.32 By the way, here you have all the angels, 00:38:46.48\00:38:48.62 you have the living creatures who are the cherubim 00:38:48.91\00:38:51.05 and the seraphim, and you have the 24 elders, 00:38:51.08\00:38:53.92 the representatives of all the worlds. 00:38:53.95\00:38:56.17 "...who was slain..." See, past. 00:39:09.02\00:39:10.62 That's the first part of the psalm. 00:39:10.65\00:39:12.07 And now notice, "And every creature..." 00:39:22.97\00:39:25.01 This hasn't happened yet. 00:39:25.04\00:39:26.16 The big question is, am I going to be in that congregation? 00:39:50.78\00:39:57.09 Did Jesus, on the cross, see me in that great congregation? 00:39:58.12\00:40:01.78 You know, we're told in Isaiah 53 that Jesus 00:40:03.96\00:40:07.69 had this trying experience. 00:40:09.75\00:40:11.97 And then He what? 00:40:13.17\00:40:15.34 He shall see the travail of His soul, and shall be what? 00:40:15.37\00:40:19.33 Satisfied. 00:40:19.81\00:40:21.25 Why? 00:40:21.28\00:40:22.32 Because He's going to see present there 00:40:22.35\00:40:24.41 all of the redeemed. 00:40:24.44\00:40:26.96 All those who received Him as Savior and Lord. 00:40:27.26\00:40:30.55 The question is, have we received Him as our Savior 00:40:31.30\00:40:34.61 and as our Lord? 00:40:35.26\00:40:36.77 You know, when Jesus was on the cross, according to 00:40:39.21\00:40:41.37 the spirit of prophecy, Jesus could actually see 00:40:41.40\00:40:47.29 every person who was going to be redeemed 00:40:47.92\00:40:51.91 in His kingdom individually. 00:40:51.94\00:40:55.08 He wants us there. 00:40:56.21\00:40:57.55 "He shall see the travail of His soul and shall be satisfied." 00:40:58.70\00:41:03.04 Because He's going to have His people there. 00:41:03.66\00:41:05.42 But folks, if we're going to be there, we have to have 00:41:06.00\00:41:09.04 the same spirit that Jesus had. 00:41:09.07\00:41:10.89 "He who humbles himself will be exalted. 00:41:11.65\00:41:15.19 And he who exalts himself will be..." What? 00:41:15.39\00:41:18.27 "...humbled." 00:41:18.30\00:41:19.33 Two mysteries. 00:41:19.36\00:41:20.44 Lucifer said, "I'm going up." 00:41:20.70\00:41:22.28 God cast him down, he's going to be destroyed. 00:41:23.50\00:41:26.00 Jesus said, "I'll come down." 00:41:26.31\00:41:28.13 The Father has highly exalted Him, and is going to exalt Him. 00:41:28.30\00:41:31.41 And all those who have the mind and the spirit of Jesus 00:41:31.51\00:41:34.68 will have the same experience of Jesus and will be present 00:41:35.62\00:41:38.90 in that great congregation. 00:41:38.93\00:41:40.77 I pray to the Lord that none of us in that great day 00:41:40.80\00:41:44.90 are missing. 00:41:45.36\00:41:46.57 Let us pray. 00:41:47.19\00:41:48.31 Father in heaven, we thank You for this marvelous 00:41:49.26\00:41:52.62 Messianic psalm. 00:41:52.65\00:41:54.12 We're thankful that You were willing to send Your Son, 00:41:54.91\00:41:57.54 Your beloved Son, the most precious thing in the universe, 00:41:57.57\00:42:01.26 the most precious being in the universe, 00:42:01.29\00:42:03.65 to come to this world to suffer the anguish and the agony 00:42:04.21\00:42:07.21 and the pain that we studied about in this psalm. 00:42:07.24\00:42:09.71 We'll never be able to fully understand, 00:42:10.22\00:42:12.21 not only the physical suffering, but the mental torture, 00:42:13.58\00:42:16.72 the spiritual anguish that Jesus felt. 00:42:16.75\00:42:19.06 We thank You that You were willing to send Jesus, 00:42:20.13\00:42:22.13 and we're thankful that Jesus was willing to come 00:42:22.16\00:42:24.45 and suffer this for us. 00:42:24.48\00:42:26.19 And Father, I ask this morning that You will come and You will 00:42:27.00\00:42:30.44 touch each heart and each mind in this congregation. 00:42:30.47\00:42:33.51 Father, instill in us the spirit of Jesus 00:42:34.00\00:42:37.68 who is meek and lowly of heart. 00:42:37.98\00:42:39.89 I ask, Father, that You will help us always to be willing 00:42:40.63\00:42:43.64 to occupy second or third or fourth place. 00:42:43.67\00:42:46.43 That we will be willing to occupy the place of service 00:42:46.77\00:42:50.38 that You have established for us. 00:42:50.41\00:42:52.41 So that someday You will exalt us and we will have the 00:42:52.87\00:42:56.88 privilege of being in that great congregation. 00:42:56.91\00:42:59.76 I pray, Father, that on that great day not one of those 00:43:00.19\00:43:03.01 who are gathered here will be missing. 00:43:03.04\00:43:04.79 I thank You, Father, for hearing my prayer. 00:43:05.85\00:43:08.04 For I ask it in the precious name of Your Son, Jesus. 00:43:08.70\00:43:11.71 Amen. 00:43:12.01\00:43:13.08
