Shall we bow our heads for prayer. 00:00:38.06\00:00:39.63 Father in heaven, what a joy it is to be in Your house 00:00:41.40\00:00:44.99 of worship on Your holy Sabbath. 00:00:45.02\00:00:47.42 We thank You for this oasis in time. 00:00:48.26\00:00:52.13 We thank You that we're able to forget everything ours 00:00:52.84\00:00:56.80 so that we can focus on everything yours. 00:00:56.90\00:01:00.00 We ask, Father, that as we open Your Word that Your Holy Spirit 00:01:00.66\00:01:03.92 will be with us to instruct us and to guide us. 00:01:03.95\00:01:06.72 Help us to learn the lessons which will be useful 00:01:07.28\00:01:10.45 in our own personal walk with Jesus. 00:01:10.75\00:01:13.19 And we thank You, Father, for hearing our prayer, 00:01:14.06\00:01:16.29 for we ask it in Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:16.32\00:01:20.72 I would like us to begin our study this morning 00:01:23.01\00:01:26.90 at Psalm 8 and we will read verses 3 through 5. 00:01:27.15\00:01:32.69 If you remember, we're studying now a series titled, 00:01:33.64\00:01:37.63 The Law of Life and Death. 00:01:37.66\00:01:41.74 And today is the second sermon in this six part series titled, 00:01:42.32\00:01:48.38 The Law of Life and Death. 00:01:48.58\00:01:51.56 What I want us to notice in this passage is that God 00:01:52.15\00:01:55.89 placed Adam on the throne as the ruler of planet earth 00:01:55.92\00:02:02.90 at the very beginning of human history. 00:02:03.27\00:02:06.92 It says there is Psalm 8 and verse 3, 00:02:07.87\00:02:10.73 the psalmist speaking... 00:02:11.54\00:02:13.28 Speaking about the creation of Adam. 00:02:33.21\00:02:35.73 Notice, this is the idea of a coronation. 00:02:42.41\00:02:45.37 And notice, he has a territory which God gave him. 00:02:50.10\00:02:53.30 "You have made him to have dominion over the 00:02:53.61\00:02:56.82 works of Your hands. 00:02:56.85\00:02:58.61 You have put all things under his feet; 00:02:58.64\00:03:01.80 all sheep and oxen, even the beasts of the field, 00:03:02.21\00:03:07.05 the birds of the air and the fish of the sea 00:03:07.08\00:03:10.01 that pass through the paths of the seas." 00:03:10.21\00:03:13.57 Clearly, God placed Adam as the king of planet earth 00:03:14.60\00:03:19.42 at the very beginning. 00:03:19.45\00:03:20.89 And He placed a crown on his head, 00:03:21.41\00:03:23.90 according to this passage. 00:03:23.93\00:03:25.82 But when Adam chose Satan as his sovereign, 00:03:26.23\00:03:31.01 Satan took over the throne and Adam lost his dominion. 00:03:31.42\00:03:37.01 Let's read about that in Luke chapter 4 00:03:37.81\00:03:40.66 and verses 5 through 7. 00:03:40.96\00:03:43.34 Luke chapter 4 and verses 5 through 7. 00:03:43.37\00:03:47.53 This is the moment when the devil takes Jesus to a 00:03:48.60\00:03:51.30 very high mountain. 00:03:51.33\00:03:52.67 And it says there in verse 5... 00:03:53.87\00:03:56.24 So basically, the devil is saying to Jesus, 00:04:28.89\00:04:32.34 "This kingdom or these kingdoms have been delivered to me. 00:04:33.12\00:04:37.31 And I give these kingdoms to whomever I wish." 00:04:37.96\00:04:42.10 Originally, we noticed, that the kingdom was given to Adam. 00:04:42.83\00:04:46.11 But now Satan is claiming the kingdoms of this world. 00:04:46.83\00:04:51.57 And he's actually offering these kingdoms to Jesus. 00:04:52.23\00:04:56.90 It becomes very obvious that after Adam sinned, 00:04:57.45\00:05:02.50 the kingdoms of this world were taken over by usurpation 00:05:02.84\00:05:08.73 from the hands of Adam. 00:05:08.76\00:05:12.08 And therefore, the human race needed someone to come 00:05:12.92\00:05:17.96 and recover that which had been lost. 00:05:18.21\00:05:22.22 But the Bible says that there was no one within humanity 00:05:23.02\00:05:26.28 who could actually come and defeat the devil, 00:05:26.53\00:05:29.48 because everyone had already been defeated by the devil. 00:05:29.51\00:05:33.06 We find in Romans chapter 3 and verse 10, 00:05:33.90\00:05:36.21 "There is none righteous, no not one." 00:05:36.24\00:05:38.33 In Romans 3 verse 23, "All have sinned and come short 00:05:38.60\00:05:42.35 of the glory of God." 00:05:42.38\00:05:43.44 There was no one within the human race who could recover 00:05:43.47\00:05:46.75 the throne and the dominion which Adam had given over 00:05:46.78\00:05:51.02 to Satan as the ruler of this world. 00:05:51.36\00:05:54.95 And so it became necessary that Jesus, the Creator 00:05:56.08\00:06:01.65 of the whole human race, become incarnate 00:06:01.68\00:06:05.24 so that He could recover the throne 00:06:05.27\00:06:07.98 and He could recover the crown. 00:06:08.01\00:06:10.61 Now it's important to notice the way in which Jesus did this. 00:06:12.27\00:06:15.17 You know, in heaven He was a King. 00:06:16.21\00:06:18.53 He had a crown. 00:06:19.35\00:06:20.90 He had His throne. 00:06:21.42\00:06:23.14 You would have thought that He would have said, 00:06:24.61\00:06:26.20 "Okay, Satan, you stole the throne. 00:06:26.23\00:06:29.25 I'll knock you off and I'll just restore the throne." 00:06:29.55\00:06:33.71 But that's not the way it happened. 00:06:34.43\00:06:36.22 You see, in order for Jesus to recover the throne, 00:06:37.06\00:06:40.79 He had to get down from His throne in heaven 00:06:41.25\00:06:44.20 and He had to come to this world in a very strange 00:06:44.23\00:06:49.63 and unexpected way. 00:06:49.66\00:06:51.81 Do you realize that the last week of the life of Jesus 00:06:53.07\00:06:57.92 before His death on Calvary actually was the process 00:06:57.95\00:07:04.07 of His coronation as a King? 00:07:04.10\00:07:07.30 You know, we usually read those texts where it speaks about 00:07:07.86\00:07:10.90 Jesus coming on His throne of glory with all of His angels 00:07:10.93\00:07:15.20 and having a crown within a crown on His head. 00:07:15.23\00:07:18.32 And we think that this is the description of Jesus as King. 00:07:18.55\00:07:22.70 But there is another description of Jesus as King, 00:07:22.73\00:07:26.22 which is very, very strange. 00:07:26.25\00:07:30.20 Let's notice John chapter 12 and verses 12 through 15. 00:07:31.41\00:07:36.83 This passage is speaking about the procession of Jesus. 00:07:37.99\00:07:43.77 He's coming into Jerusalem as a Prince. 00:07:44.07\00:07:47.44 And as a Prince, He is going to be eventually crowned as King, 00:07:47.98\00:07:54.90 and He is going to be placed on His throne. 00:07:54.93\00:07:58.11 This is known as the triumphal entry. 00:07:59.37\00:08:02.12 It is taking place on what Christians call, Palm Sunday. 00:08:02.15\00:08:05.86 I want you to notice the kingly terminology 00:08:07.21\00:08:10.58 that you have in this passage. 00:08:10.61\00:08:12.57 It says there, beginning at verse 12... 00:08:13.20\00:08:15.61 Do you see that they're proclaiming Jesus King? 00:08:33.01\00:08:35.42 He's entering Jerusalem as a Prince. 00:08:35.45\00:08:38.43 And the multitudes are crying out, "Hosanna. 00:08:38.77\00:08:41.50 Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:08:41.53\00:08:44.22 The King of Israel." 00:08:44.25\00:08:46.06 So you'll notice that Jesus enters Jerusalem 00:09:01.41\00:09:03.95 in this triumphal entry, and He's being acclaimed 00:09:03.98\00:09:07.38 as a King by the multitudes. 00:09:07.41\00:09:10.52 In fact, He sits on a donkey, which was a sign of royalty. 00:09:10.55\00:09:14.43 This is the procession of Jesus as the Prince. 00:09:14.94\00:09:18.06 He's coming to Jerusalem to be crowned as King. 00:09:18.09\00:09:22.10 Now it's interesting to notice in John chapter 12 00:09:23.95\00:09:27.00 and verses 31 to 33 that the Lord Jesus predicted... 00:09:27.03\00:09:32.13 This is taking place, by the way, only three days 00:09:32.66\00:09:36.11 before the death of Jesus, what we're going to read now. 00:09:36.14\00:09:38.49 Jesus is predicting that He is going to cast out 00:09:38.59\00:09:42.99 the present ruler at that time of this world 00:09:43.02\00:09:46.21 by what He was going to do in Jerusalem. 00:09:46.24\00:09:48.84 Notice John chapter 12 and verses 31 to 33. 00:09:49.31\00:09:54.48 You see, this world had a prince. 00:09:54.51\00:09:56.35 This world had a ruler. 00:09:56.38\00:09:57.63 He had taken it from Adam. 00:09:57.66\00:09:58.93 Now Jesus is saying just a few days before His death 00:09:58.96\00:10:01.71 on the cross, He's saying, "I'm going to take this individual 00:10:01.74\00:10:05.80 off the throne and I'm going to be the new ruler 00:10:05.83\00:10:08.50 by what I'm going to do in Jerusalem." 00:10:08.93\00:10:10.80 Notice... 00:10:10.83\00:10:11.94 He was saying, "When I hang on the cross, 00:10:31.86\00:10:34.09 when I say, 'It is finished,' I am going to knock off 00:10:34.12\00:10:37.42 the present ruler of this world who took the throne 00:10:37.45\00:10:40.77 from the original ruler, from Adam." 00:10:40.80\00:10:43.28 In other words He's saying, "I'm going to lay stake to My throne. 00:10:44.48\00:10:48.09 And I'm going to lay stake to My crown." 00:10:48.12\00:10:51.15 But this was a strange King. 00:10:52.95\00:10:54.57 Very unusual King. 00:10:55.55\00:10:57.52 Now every king, in order to be king, needs to be anointed. 00:10:59.23\00:11:02.59 Would you agree with that? 00:11:02.62\00:11:03.99 Interestingly enough, after the triumphal entry 00:11:04.99\00:11:09.11 you find the anointing of this King. 00:11:09.14\00:11:12.54 Notice Matthew chapter 26 and verses 1 and 2. 00:11:12.98\00:11:16.10 And while you're looking for Matthew 26:1-2, 00:11:16.13\00:11:18.68 let me ask you, where were kings anointed? 00:11:18.71\00:11:22.42 On what part of their body? 00:11:22.45\00:11:24.02 On their heads. 00:11:24.90\00:11:26.25 And what were they anointed with? 00:11:26.28\00:11:28.19 They were anointed with oil. 00:11:28.66\00:11:30.96 Now notice what we find in Matthew 26 and verses 1 and 2. 00:11:32.64\00:11:40.77 By the way, that means to be enthroned. 00:11:51.95\00:11:54.48 We're going to notice that a little bit later. 00:11:55.28\00:11:57.23 Let's jump down to verse 6. 00:11:58.44\00:12:00.11 "And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, 00:12:00.14\00:12:05.27 a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of 00:12:05.30\00:12:09.96 very costly fragrant oil." 00:12:09.99\00:12:14.14 Now some places don't say that it was oil. 00:12:16.17\00:12:20.46 But I want you to notice, I'll just mention this text 00:12:21.17\00:12:23.43 in passing, Luke 7 verse 46. 00:12:23.46\00:12:26.15 Jesus says, "My head with oil thou didst not anoint," 00:12:27.54\00:12:31.95 He's saying to Simon. 00:12:31.98\00:12:33.23 "You didn't anoint My head with oil." 00:12:33.26\00:12:35.82 "But this woman hath anointed My feet with ointment." 00:12:36.23\00:12:40.36 So what this woman was using was oil. 00:12:42.29\00:12:44.37 And where did she anoint Jesus? 00:12:44.40\00:12:46.93 Verse 7 again, "A woman came to Him having an alabaster flask 00:12:47.13\00:12:50.89 of costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His..." What? 00:12:50.92\00:12:55.51 "...on His head as He sat at the table. 00:12:55.94\00:12:58.60 But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, 00:12:59.10\00:13:01.31 saying, 'Why this waste? 00:13:01.34\00:13:03.15 For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much 00:13:03.35\00:13:07.32 and given to the poor.' 00:13:07.35\00:13:08.67 But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, 00:13:08.90\00:13:11.23 'Why do you trouble the woman? 00:13:11.26\00:13:12.89 For she has done a good work for Me. 00:13:13.09\00:13:15.34 For you have the poor with you always, 00:13:15.37\00:13:18.99 but Me you do not have always. 00:13:19.02\00:13:21.09 For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, 00:13:21.12\00:13:24.13 she did it for My burial.'" 00:13:24.16\00:13:26.31 So we find Jesus entering as a triumphant Prince 00:13:26.34\00:13:30.45 into Jerusalem. 00:13:30.48\00:13:31.96 And now He is anointed with oil on His head. 00:13:32.16\00:13:36.97 He's being anointed as a King. 00:13:37.00\00:13:40.63 But this is quite a strange King. 00:13:41.77\00:13:43.66 Now, all kings need to have a crown. 00:13:45.21\00:13:47.16 Don't they? 00:13:47.88\00:13:48.91 Therefore, Jesus had to have a crown as well. 00:13:49.77\00:13:52.36 But it's a rather strange crown. 00:13:52.83\00:13:54.71 Notice John chapter 19 and verses 2 and 3. 00:13:55.17\00:13:58.46 John chapter 19 and verses 2 and 3. 00:13:58.91\00:14:03.40 Jesus had a crown. 00:14:03.79\00:14:05.23 But it was a strange crown. 00:14:06.69\00:14:08.42 It says there in verse 2... 00:14:09.40\00:14:11.13 Isn't that kind of a strange crown for a King? 00:14:18.16\00:14:20.33 Notice, they're rendering Him homage as a King. 00:14:28.50\00:14:31.32 And so this King who has this triumphal procession 00:14:39.53\00:14:42.67 into Jerusalem as the Prince who is going to be crowned, 00:14:42.70\00:14:46.00 who is anointed on His head with oil to be the King, 00:14:46.13\00:14:49.92 now a crown is placed on His head. 00:14:49.95\00:14:53.00 But it is a crown of thorns. 00:14:53.03\00:14:55.38 Now every king needs to have special garments. 00:14:56.34\00:15:00.04 And the special garments, of course, are to be 00:15:00.26\00:15:03.28 a certain color. 00:15:03.31\00:15:04.70 Kings actually were garbed in purple. 00:15:05.33\00:15:09.20 That was the royal color. 00:15:09.23\00:15:11.00 And so Jesus, if He was going to be a King, had to be 00:15:11.27\00:15:14.34 robed in purple. 00:15:14.37\00:15:15.80 Notice John chapter 19 and verses 2 and 3 once again. 00:15:16.40\00:15:21.13 "And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it 00:15:21.63\00:15:25.38 on His head, and they put on Him..." What? 00:15:25.41\00:15:29.84 "...a purple robe. 00:15:30.04\00:15:32.33 Then they said, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' 00:15:33.29\00:15:36.94 And they struck Him with their hands." 00:15:36.97\00:15:39.98 So Jesus the King wears a purple robe. 00:15:40.58\00:15:43.65 They place a crown of thorns on His head. 00:15:44.21\00:15:46.37 It's the crown of a King. 00:15:46.40\00:15:47.85 He has His anointing service separating Him as King. 00:15:48.46\00:15:52.54 And He enters triumphal into Jerusalem as a Prince 00:15:52.57\00:15:55.99 who is going to be crowned. 00:15:56.02\00:15:57.91 But now every king needs to be recognized by his subjects 00:15:58.68\00:16:02.04 and needs to be honored and glorified by his subjects. 00:16:02.07\00:16:05.37 And so, of course, Jesus had to also receive homage 00:16:05.88\00:16:09.67 from His subjects. 00:16:09.70\00:16:10.73 But the interesting thing is, they acclaim Him as King, 00:16:10.76\00:16:14.28 but they acclaim Him in a mocking manner. 00:16:14.31\00:16:17.81 Notice Mark chapter 15 and verses 17 through 19. 00:16:18.56\00:16:23.09 Mark chapter 15 and verses 17 through 19. 00:16:23.12\00:16:28.02 See, like the multitudes would do in case that a king 00:16:39.11\00:16:42.80 is coming and is going to be crowned. 00:16:42.83\00:16:45.03 You know, they're going to honor and glorify him 00:16:45.06\00:16:47.62 and sing out his praises. 00:16:47.65\00:16:49.77 But this is a strange way for the people 00:16:50.31\00:16:52.44 to recognize this King. 00:16:52.64\00:16:54.38 It says, "And they began to salute Him..." 00:16:55.54\00:16:57.51 But all of this was done by His subjects mockingly. 00:17:13.95\00:17:17.68 Normally, a king, when he's recognized, 00:17:18.88\00:17:21.32 the multitudes would actually praise him in a sincere 00:17:21.98\00:17:25.99 and honest way, in a loving way. 00:17:26.02\00:17:28.65 Now every king also has to have a scepter in his right hand, 00:17:30.09\00:17:34.04 which is a symbol of his rulership. 00:17:34.52\00:17:37.50 Therefore, Jesus also had to have a scepter 00:17:38.12\00:17:41.36 in His right hand. 00:17:41.39\00:17:42.79 Notice Matthew chapter 27 and verse 29. 00:17:43.07\00:17:47.19 Matthew chapter 27 and verse 29. 00:17:47.22\00:17:50.93 Jesus had His scepter as well. 00:17:50.96\00:17:53.17 He's going through a process of coronation as King. 00:17:53.63\00:17:56.93 Strange King that we find here. 00:17:56.96\00:18:00.98 It says... 00:18:01.80\00:18:02.83 See, that's the scepter. 00:18:11.76\00:18:13.83 So Jesus has His crown. 00:18:23.25\00:18:25.16 He has His scepter. 00:18:26.01\00:18:27.67 He has His purple robes. 00:18:28.41\00:18:30.78 He had His anointing service. 00:18:30.81\00:18:33.52 The people acclaim Him, mockingly, as King. 00:18:34.04\00:18:37.90 Was Jesus really a King? 00:18:40.23\00:18:42.15 All of the evidence seems to indicate so. 00:18:43.77\00:18:46.06 In fact, in Matthew 27 verse 11, which we won't look up now, 00:18:46.83\00:18:50.66 Jesus had a private interview with Pilate, 00:18:50.69\00:18:53.01 with Pontius Pilate. 00:18:53.21\00:18:54.52 Pilate asked Him, "Are you a King?" 00:18:55.18\00:18:57.69 Jesus says, "Yes. 00:18:58.89\00:19:00.26 But I'm not the type of King that you think I am. 00:19:01.18\00:19:03.73 I'm not a glorious King who's going to take away your throne 00:19:04.44\00:19:07.64 and sit on the throne of Rome." 00:19:07.67\00:19:09.87 He says, "I am a King, but My kingdom right now 00:19:10.86\00:19:13.57 is not of this world." 00:19:13.60\00:19:15.41 And then when Pilate brings out Jesus before the Jews, 00:19:16.57\00:19:21.40 I want you to notice how he introduces Jesus. 00:19:21.83\00:19:25.78 John chapter 19 and verses 14 and 15. 00:19:25.81\00:19:30.00 John 19 and verses 14 and 15. 00:19:30.03\00:19:33.64 So Pilate recognized that Jesus was a King. 00:20:04.14\00:20:07.34 He introduces Jesus as a King. 00:20:08.04\00:20:10.91 In a private interview, Jesus says, "I am a King." 00:20:11.17\00:20:15.07 And then Jesus is taken on the procession 00:20:16.93\00:20:20.05 to the place of His coronation. 00:20:20.08\00:20:22.56 But it's a strange procession. 00:20:24.03\00:20:26.20 It's known commonly among Christians as the Via Dolorosa; 00:20:27.50\00:20:32.07 the way of sorrow and pain. 00:20:33.08\00:20:36.08 You see, He's going on the procession because they're 00:20:37.07\00:20:39.52 going to place Him on His throne. 00:20:39.55\00:20:41.29 But we're going to notice that the throne is actually a cross. 00:20:41.40\00:20:47.21 What a strange way to be recognized as a King, 00:20:49.32\00:20:53.88 to be placed on a throne which is actually a cross. 00:20:54.57\00:21:01.14 Notice what we find in Matthew 27 and verses 31 to 33. 00:21:01.98\00:21:09.67 "And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, 00:21:31.17\00:21:34.35 that is to say, the Place of a Skull..." 00:21:34.38\00:21:37.87 So you have here the procession of Jesus to the place 00:21:38.88\00:21:42.53 of His coronation, to the place where He's going to be 00:21:42.56\00:21:46.18 put upon the throne. 00:21:46.21\00:21:48.16 Now, you know, it's very interesting that the 00:21:50.19\00:21:53.58 book of Acts describes this coronation 00:21:53.61\00:21:58.39 and enthronement ceremony by quoting a prophecy 00:21:58.42\00:22:02.77 from the Old Testament. 00:22:02.80\00:22:04.28 Turn with me to Acts chapter 4 and verses 25 to 27. 00:22:05.25\00:22:08.90 In case you haven't recognized now that the last week 00:22:08.93\00:22:12.59 of the life of Jesus before His death was a process of 00:22:12.62\00:22:15.41 coronation as a King, this will seal it. 00:22:15.44\00:22:19.03 Acts chapter 4 verses 25 to 27. 00:22:19.81\00:22:23.44 Here, Peter is reminiscing about the moment when 00:22:23.47\00:22:26.92 Annas, Caiaphas, the Jewish leaders, 00:22:27.36\00:22:30.52 Herod, and Pilate gathered around Jesus, 00:22:30.55\00:22:34.13 mockingly, to destroy Him. 00:22:34.16\00:22:36.58 And I want you to notice that Peter quotes a very interesting 00:22:38.21\00:22:41.03 passage from the Old Testament. 00:22:41.06\00:22:42.44 Let's begin at verse 24 of Acts chapter 4. 00:22:43.55\00:22:48.41 "So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God 00:22:49.27\00:22:54.07 with one accord and said, 'Lord, You are God, 00:22:54.10\00:22:57.60 who made heaven and earth and the sea, 00:22:58.03\00:23:00.37 and all that is in them...'" 00:23:00.40\00:23:02.25 Do you know where he's quoting from? 00:23:10.63\00:23:12.21 Psalm 2, a very important psalm. 00:23:12.24\00:23:15.45 "...to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose 00:23:44.15\00:23:46.50 determined before to be done." 00:23:46.53\00:23:49.10 Now why would this passage be quoted as referring to the 00:23:50.05\00:23:55.43 moment when the leaders of Israel and when Pilate and Herod 00:23:55.46\00:24:01.02 gathered around Jesus to mock Him? 00:24:01.05\00:24:04.14 We need to know the original historical context of Psalm 2. 00:24:05.21\00:24:08.49 You see, Psalm 2 is speaking about David's coronation then. 00:24:09.39\00:24:13.24 And God is placing David as His servant on the throne. 00:24:14.91\00:24:17.90 And at the same time that David is being placed on the throne, 00:24:18.98\00:24:21.87 the surrounding nations with their kings are conspiring 00:24:22.36\00:24:25.77 to overthrow him before he wins over the sympathy of the people. 00:24:25.80\00:24:30.23 They say, "If we can knock him off early, 00:24:30.26\00:24:32.89 then he won't have the confidence of the people, 00:24:34.53\00:24:36.86 and we'll be able to overcome him." 00:24:37.24\00:24:39.24 Interesting that this passage in Psalm 2, which applies 00:24:40.44\00:24:44.05 originally to the coronation of David and the nations 00:24:44.08\00:24:47.01 conspiring against him as the king of Israel, 00:24:47.04\00:24:51.04 is used to refer to Jesus who is also being crowned as a King 00:24:51.07\00:24:56.84 and the nations are conspiring against Jesus Christ. 00:24:56.87\00:25:01.85 So this passage makes it very clear that the process that 00:25:03.14\00:25:06.31 Jesus went through was His coronation day like in Psalm 2. 00:25:06.34\00:25:11.65 Now every king needs to have an inscription above his throne 00:25:12.38\00:25:16.51 so that everybody recognizes his name. 00:25:16.94\00:25:19.34 And it couldn't be any different than Jesus. 00:25:19.93\00:25:22.58 Notice John chapter 19 and verse 19, 00:25:22.87\00:25:26.47 and we'll also read verse 20. 00:25:26.50\00:25:28.59 John 19 and verses 19 and 20. 00:25:28.62\00:25:33.74 It's beautiful to hear the pages of the Bible. 00:25:35.93\00:25:38.10 It's musical. 00:25:38.13\00:25:39.34 It says there... 00:25:40.42\00:25:41.50 Interesting. 00:25:57.81\00:25:58.91 But there's another very interesting detail about this. 00:26:00.21\00:26:02.87 Notice the following verse, verse 20. 00:26:02.90\00:26:05.14 "Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where 00:26:05.38\00:26:10.42 Jesus was crucified was near the city," and notice this, 00:26:10.45\00:26:14.22 "and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin." 00:26:14.25\00:26:20.35 Was Jesus only the King of the Jews? 00:26:22.36\00:26:25.26 No. 00:26:26.62\00:26:27.73 The inscription above His head that said, 00:26:28.42\00:26:31.23 "Jesus, the King of the Jews," is actually in three languages. 00:26:31.26\00:26:35.04 The main languages of that day and age in the known world. 00:26:35.07\00:26:39.07 Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. 00:26:39.89\00:26:43.26 In other words, this King is not only the King of the Jews. 00:26:43.29\00:26:46.18 This King is the King of what? 00:26:46.38\00:26:48.97 He's the King of the world. 00:26:49.00\00:26:50.72 He's the King of everyone, whether it be Jew, 00:26:51.86\00:26:54.94 or whether it be Greek, or whether it be Gentile. 00:26:54.97\00:26:57.81 Whatever, He is the King of all. 00:26:57.84\00:26:59.85 And so we have this strange description of Jesus as King. 00:27:01.49\00:27:07.04 Now have you noticed in all of this that Jesus is actually 00:27:08.96\00:27:13.15 a suffering King in everything that we've studied? 00:27:13.98\00:27:18.58 A sorrowful King. 00:27:19.74\00:27:21.64 A humiliated King. 00:27:22.47\00:27:25.59 And yet Scripture presents Him as King, because He is King 00:27:26.49\00:27:30.75 by what He's doing, by humbling Himself. 00:27:31.06\00:27:33.57 He's taking away the throne from the ruler of this world, 00:27:33.60\00:27:37.12 who took it from Adam. 00:27:37.15\00:27:38.50 And He is recovering the throne by what He is doing. 00:27:38.53\00:27:41.26 But He's not doing it by force. 00:27:42.15\00:27:43.98 He's doing it by becoming nothing. 00:27:44.01\00:27:46.93 By emptying Himself. 00:27:47.03\00:27:48.80 By humbling Himself. 00:27:48.83\00:27:51.23 Now Scripture presents Jesus in a different light 00:27:52.98\00:27:57.57 in other passages. 00:27:58.78\00:28:00.30 It presents Him, for example, in Matthew 25 and verse 31 00:28:01.94\00:28:06.91 as a King seated on a glorious throne. 00:28:08.21\00:28:12.41 With a crown, according to Revelation chapter 19, 00:28:13.86\00:28:18.14 within a crown. 00:28:18.59\00:28:19.96 "On His head are many diadems," is what Scripture says. 00:28:19.99\00:28:25.44 This is a different kind of King. 00:28:25.47\00:28:27.10 No longer mocking Christ, no longer a crown of thorns, 00:28:28.28\00:28:31.88 no longer a cross as His throne. 00:28:31.91\00:28:35.01 But rather sitting on a throne of glory with a glorious 00:28:36.63\00:28:40.88 crown on His head. 00:28:40.91\00:28:42.62 Let's read about that in Matthew chapter 25 and verse 31. 00:28:44.32\00:28:49.77 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the 00:28:51.47\00:28:57.83 holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the 00:28:57.86\00:29:02.78 throne of His glory." 00:29:02.81\00:29:05.79 And do you know that Scripture says that those who mocked Him, 00:29:06.64\00:29:09.23 those who pierced Him, will wail over Him 00:29:09.26\00:29:13.10 when they see Him seated on His glorious throne 00:29:13.13\00:29:16.20 with His glorious crown on His head. 00:29:16.23\00:29:19.71 Different kind of King. 00:29:20.47\00:29:22.03 Now you remember that in our last study together, 00:29:23.20\00:29:25.94 we talked about upward mobility and downward mobility. 00:29:25.97\00:29:30.27 Most of the world operates by the rule of upward mobility. 00:29:31.97\00:29:36.31 But the kingdom of Christ operates on the basis 00:29:37.44\00:29:40.27 of downward mobility. 00:29:40.30\00:29:42.04 "He who humbles himself will be..." What? 00:29:42.86\00:29:46.71 "...will be exalted." 00:29:46.96\00:29:48.18 And in the case of Jesus, we find an illustration 00:29:49.24\00:29:53.65 of this principle very clear. 00:29:53.68\00:29:55.95 Before Jesus can sit on the glorious throne 00:29:56.56\00:29:59.63 with a glorious crown on His head, He must come down 00:30:00.07\00:30:03.82 and He must have a crown of thorns, and He must 00:30:03.85\00:30:07.28 sit on a crown or rest on a crown, which is actually 00:30:07.72\00:30:12.10 a cross, and His hands and His feet and His side being pierced. 00:30:12.13\00:30:17.35 In other words, before He can reign He must humble Himself 00:30:17.58\00:30:22.51 and He must become a servant. 00:30:22.54\00:30:24.94 You see, this is how we explain the two thrones 00:30:26.49\00:30:29.65 and the two crowns of Jesus. 00:30:29.68\00:30:32.62 He's, first of all, the suffering servant. 00:30:33.62\00:30:36.66 And then He becomes the sovereign Lord 00:30:36.69\00:30:39.41 as a result of humbling Himself. 00:30:39.44\00:30:42.84 Let's read that passage again in Philippians chapter 2 00:30:43.42\00:30:46.29 and verses 5 through 11. 00:30:46.32\00:30:48.15 Philippians chapter 2 and verses 5 through 11, 00:30:48.18\00:30:51.19 which we looked at last time. 00:30:51.22\00:30:52.63 But let's look at it again, because here we have 00:30:52.66\00:30:55.06 the law of life and death. 00:30:55.09\00:30:57.60 If Jesus had remained on His glorious throne in heaven, 00:30:58.79\00:31:01.39 we would all be lost. 00:31:01.42\00:31:02.91 But because He came down, we all have the hope 00:31:03.69\00:31:06.67 of everlasting life. 00:31:06.70\00:31:08.45 Notice Philippians 2 verse 5. 00:31:09.15\00:31:11.08 Actually, He did not consider His equality with God 00:31:20.76\00:31:23.46 as something to be hung on to, as something to be grasped. 00:31:23.49\00:31:26.66 Notice, this was His choice. 00:31:30.65\00:31:31.86 He made Himself of no reputation. 00:31:31.89\00:31:34.65 Actually, He emptied Himself. 00:31:34.68\00:31:37.50 He said, "Father, not I but You." 00:31:38.05\00:31:40.36 See, He's already a man. 00:31:52.20\00:31:53.26 He's going to humble Himself even more. 00:31:53.29\00:31:54.85 It's His choice. He humbled Himself. 00:31:57.63\00:31:59.63 Even that throne, the throne of the cross. 00:32:06.60\00:32:09.36 Even that crown, the crown of thorns. 00:32:10.14\00:32:12.63 Even the mocking cries of the people. 00:32:12.66\00:32:15.05 He humbled Himself. 00:32:16.07\00:32:17.57 He emptied Himself. 00:32:17.60\00:32:19.46 He went to the cross. 00:32:19.49\00:32:21.06 What did God do as a result of that? 00:32:21.69\00:32:23.78 Notice verse 9. 00:32:24.87\00:32:26.06 Did Jesus go to heaven and say, "Okay Father, I went down 00:32:27.00\00:32:30.18 and I did it. 00:32:30.21\00:32:31.29 Now I want My just due. 00:32:32.43\00:32:34.18 Come on, give Me My name. 00:32:36.43\00:32:38.02 Give Me My throne back." 00:32:40.37\00:32:41.86 No. 00:32:43.05\00:32:44.08 "He who humbles himself... 00:32:44.32\00:32:45.97 ...will be exalted." 00:32:47.31\00:32:48.84 See, you don't do the exalting. God does. 00:32:49.69\00:32:51.93 "He who humbles himself will be exalted." 00:32:51.96\00:32:54.14 "And he who exalts himself..." 00:32:54.17\00:32:55.72 Somebody else will do also the humbling. 00:32:56.75\00:32:58.47 "...will be humbled." 00:32:58.50\00:32:59.81 That's the law of life and death. 00:33:01.05\00:33:02.17 You humble yourself; life. 00:33:02.37\00:33:03.73 You exalt yourself; death. 00:33:04.10\00:33:05.64 It's that simple. 00:33:06.29\00:33:07.45 Notice verse 9. 00:33:08.55\00:33:09.65 Did He exalt Himself? 00:33:12.91\00:33:14.06 No, God did. 00:33:15.14\00:33:16.21 God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name. 00:33:16.31\00:33:19.33 Who gave Him the name? 00:33:19.36\00:33:20.45 Did He grab the name? No. 00:33:20.98\00:33:22.88 Not even to His own glory, but to the glory of His Father. 00:33:41.50\00:33:44.62 Are you catching the picture here? 00:33:47.06\00:33:48.49 He humbles Himself, and His Father gives Him a name. 00:33:49.26\00:33:53.28 His Father exalts Him. 00:33:54.36\00:33:57.28 And it's all not for His glory. 00:33:57.48\00:33:59.56 It's for the glory of whom? 00:33:59.59\00:34:01.40 It's for the glory of His Father. 00:34:01.43\00:34:03.07 Now how does this impact us? 00:34:04.18\00:34:07.30 You know, many times we want to rule before we pay our dues. 00:34:07.83\00:34:13.27 We want to be up here before we are willing to humble ourselves. 00:34:15.17\00:34:19.10 In fact, the text that we read last sermon, last Sabbath, 00:34:20.31\00:34:24.81 Matthew 23 verse 12, has the essence of the 00:34:25.73\00:34:28.05 teachings of Jesus. 00:34:28.08\00:34:29.46 If you miss a lot of the things that Jesus said 00:34:30.87\00:34:32.93 and you understand this verse, you understand the most 00:34:32.96\00:34:35.54 important concept that Jesus taught. 00:34:35.57\00:34:37.57 "He who exalts himself will be humbled. 00:34:37.82\00:34:40.49 And he who humbles himself will be exalted." 00:34:40.52\00:34:42.41 And the life of Jesus is a living 00:34:42.51\00:34:44.84 illustration of this principle. 00:34:44.87\00:34:46.32 And the question is, what about us? 00:34:46.35\00:34:48.73 Do we have to follow the same process that Jesus did? 00:34:50.93\00:34:53.78 Of course we do. 00:34:54.64\00:34:55.68 Actually, Jesus is giving us an example. 00:34:57.39\00:34:59.85 He's saying, "As I have humbled Myself, 00:34:59.88\00:35:02.16 you humble yourselves too. 00:35:02.19\00:35:03.86 That as I was exalted, someday you might be exalted 00:35:04.53\00:35:07.82 with Me as well." 00:35:07.85\00:35:09.29 You see, we can never occupy the throne 00:35:10.44\00:35:12.79 until we have carried the cross. 00:35:12.82\00:35:15.03 We can never be exalted unless first we have humbled ourselves. 00:35:16.59\00:35:20.60 You know, there are many illustrations 00:35:21.79\00:35:23.12 of this in Scripture. 00:35:23.15\00:35:24.43 You have the life of Joseph. 00:35:24.90\00:35:26.07 Joseph was up here nice at home, and God says, "Hey, you have to 00:35:27.79\00:35:31.84 go over to Egypt and become a servant." 00:35:31.87\00:35:33.85 And so Joseph goes, he's faithful as a servant, 00:35:35.37\00:35:37.91 he's faithful as a slave. 00:35:38.64\00:35:40.10 He ends up even in prison. 00:35:40.13\00:35:42.16 And so God says, "Okay, now you have learned the 00:35:42.19\00:35:44.17 lesson of being humble. 00:35:44.20\00:35:45.34 Now I'm going to exalt you." 00:35:45.37\00:35:47.05 And He places him as the Prime Minister of Egypt. 00:35:47.89\00:35:50.69 Do you think he would have been ready to be Prime Minister 00:35:51.36\00:35:53.61 of Egypt unless he had paid his dues. 00:35:53.64\00:35:55.65 Absolutely not. 00:35:56.63\00:35:57.87 You have the story of the transfiguration. 00:36:00.42\00:36:02.35 See, the disciples, they thought that Jesus was going to 00:36:03.72\00:36:06.77 sit on the throne, he was going to destroy the Romans. 00:36:06.80\00:36:09.26 He was going to be up here first. 00:36:09.46\00:36:11.13 Jesus says, "No, no, no, no. 00:36:11.68\00:36:13.14 I have to go to Jerusalem. 00:36:13.51\00:36:14.93 They're going to mock Me, they are going to spit in My face, 00:36:15.23\00:36:17.19 and they're going to crucify Me. 00:36:17.22\00:36:18.52 But then I'll tell you what. 00:36:19.04\00:36:20.13 After I'm crucified, I'm going to resurrect 00:36:20.16\00:36:22.75 and God is going to exalt Me." 00:36:22.78\00:36:24.31 So you see, "First," Jesus says, "I must die." 00:36:26.20\00:36:29.24 And then He's seen in His kingdom with Moses and Elijah, 00:36:29.45\00:36:33.69 who represent a mini kingdom. 00:36:33.72\00:36:35.59 Moses; those who died in Christ and resurrected. 00:36:36.35\00:36:39.08 And Elijah; those who will be transported to heaven 00:36:39.11\00:36:41.52 from among the living. 00:36:41.55\00:36:42.61 Jesus is saying to the disciples, "Listen, I know 00:36:42.64\00:36:45.02 you're all dejected because I said I was going to Jerusalem, 00:36:45.05\00:36:47.39 I was going to be mistreated, and I was going to die. 00:36:47.42\00:36:49.48 But lift up your spirits. 00:36:49.54\00:36:51.10 Look, this is the way it's going to be. 00:36:51.13\00:36:52.68 This is the way the kingdom is going to be. 00:36:54.47\00:36:56.37 I am going to be glorified like you see Me here 00:36:56.57\00:36:58.80 on the mount of transfiguration. 00:36:58.83\00:37:00.26 And Moses and Elijah, representing the whole 00:37:00.29\00:37:02.66 human race, are going to be with Me." 00:37:02.69\00:37:04.36 Wow. 00:37:05.26\00:37:06.29 But first comes the humbling, and then comes the exalting. 00:37:07.23\00:37:12.16 We have the same thing in Daniel chapter 7. 00:37:12.97\00:37:15.37 You know, it talks about the saints of God being 00:37:16.09\00:37:18.02 trampled upon and being mistreated. 00:37:18.05\00:37:19.97 But then the time of the judgment comes. 00:37:21.30\00:37:22.79 See, they've been stepped on. 00:37:22.82\00:37:24.70 They've lost everything. 00:37:25.49\00:37:26.83 They've been burned at the stake. 00:37:26.86\00:37:28.33 Their goods have been confiscated. 00:37:28.82\00:37:30.69 They've been hung. 00:37:31.00\00:37:32.13 They've been stamped on. 00:37:34.67\00:37:36.34 But then in the judgment, we find the kingdom is given to 00:37:37.96\00:37:41.51 Jesus and to the saints of the Most High. 00:37:41.54\00:37:43.76 And they shall rule forever and ever. 00:37:43.79\00:37:46.03 So don't you think that suffering is so bad. 00:37:47.06\00:37:49.33 Don't you think that humbling is so bad. 00:37:51.01\00:37:53.10 Because only those who know the lesson of humility 00:37:53.78\00:37:58.19 will ever be exalted. 00:37:58.22\00:37:59.87 It's a law of life. 00:38:00.66\00:38:02.04 Notice the way the apostle Paul expresses this 00:38:03.05\00:38:05.65 in 2 Timothy chapter 2 and verse 12. 00:38:05.68\00:38:08.94 2 Timothy chapter 2 and verse 12. 00:38:08.97\00:38:10.90 He gives us this maxim, he gives us this formula, 00:38:10.93\00:38:15.02 which has to be fulfilled. 00:38:15.23\00:38:17.58 2 Timothy chapter 2 and verse 12. 00:38:18.28\00:38:21.53 The apostle Paul says... 00:38:22.06\00:38:23.09 Now notice, "If we endure..." 00:38:35.20\00:38:37.73 Other versions translate, "If we suffer..." 00:38:37.76\00:38:39.83 So what's the necessary requisite for reigning with Him? 00:38:47.60\00:38:50.69 Going through suffering now, through trials, 00:38:52.00\00:38:54.84 through tribulations, through difficulties. 00:38:54.87\00:38:56.75 And folks, as we go through the trials and tribulations 00:38:56.78\00:38:58.88 and difficulties in a humble way, we learn great lessons 00:38:58.91\00:39:03.19 that will make us capable of handling the 00:39:03.22\00:39:08.76 greater responsibilities. 00:39:08.79\00:39:10.73 Because he who is faithful in little will eventually be 00:39:11.09\00:39:14.35 faithful in what? 00:39:14.38\00:39:15.71 In much. 00:39:16.04\00:39:17.30 I'd like to end by reading 2 Corinthians 4:17-18, 00:39:18.08\00:39:21.95 where the apostle Paul is describing his own experience. 00:39:23.11\00:39:26.75 He says... 00:39:26.98\00:39:28.01 What's for a moment? 00:39:35.65\00:39:36.81 Our light, what? 00:39:37.45\00:39:38.58 "Oh Pastor, you don't know how much I'm suffering." 00:39:38.93\00:39:41.12 The apostle Paul says, "For our light affliction, 00:39:41.57\00:39:44.45 which is but for a moment..." 00:39:44.48\00:39:45.95 I mean, what are 70 or 80 years in the context of eternity? 00:39:45.98\00:39:50.74 Notice that our light affliction but for a moment, 00:39:53.02\00:39:55.22 "is working for us..." 00:39:55.25\00:39:57.19 Those are the things, the light affliction but for a moment. 00:40:05.62\00:40:08.37 I pray to God that He will help us learn this lesson, folks. 00:40:21.50\00:40:25.21 That he who humbles himself will be exalted. 00:40:25.94\00:40:29.26 And he who exalts himself will be humbled. 00:40:29.83\00:40:33.74
