Our early Adventist pioneers had a radical new theology, 00:00:17.15\00:00:21.28 but it wasn't just limited to the four walls of a church. 00:00:21.32\00:00:24.99 They were at the forefront 00:00:25.02\00:00:26.35 of many of the new social movements 00:00:26.39\00:00:28.19 such as the temperance movement 00:00:28.22\00:00:29.72 as well as the abolition of slavery. 00:00:29.76\00:00:32.06 Slavery had been practiced in America 00:00:32.09\00:00:34.16 since its earliest days 00:00:34.20\00:00:35.66 and was considered normal in some parts of the country 00:00:35.70\00:00:38.87 but not for the early founders of Adventism. 00:00:38.90\00:00:41.60 William Miller, Joseph Bates, and Joshua V. Himes, 00:00:41.64\00:00:45.37 all spoke actively and openly 00:00:45.41\00:00:47.91 against this evil institution. 00:00:47.94\00:00:52.08 In the mid 1800s, 00:00:52.11\00:00:53.92 slavery was widely practiced in the Southern states 00:00:53.95\00:00:57.12 but not up North and many slaves attempted to 00:00:57.15\00:01:00.06 and succeeded in escaping to freedom 00:01:00.09\00:01:02.76 via the Underground Railroad. 00:01:02.79\00:01:05.23 It was neither underground nor a railroad 00:01:05.26\00:01:08.00 but a network of homes, farms, and transportation 00:01:08.03\00:01:11.33 that would get someone secretly from the South 00:01:11.37\00:01:14.04 up to the northern states or to Canada. 00:01:14.07\00:01:16.81 Perhaps the most famous name 00:01:16.84\00:01:18.24 associated with this movement of liberation 00:01:18.27\00:01:21.04 is Harriet Tubman, 00:01:21.08\00:01:22.41 who helped thousands of people to escape. 00:01:22.44\00:01:25.01 Also, Sojourner Truth spoke widely and passionately 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.72 against slavery, 00:01:28.75\00:01:30.09 and she was baptized as an Adventist by Uriah Smith. 00:01:30.12\00:01:33.36 John Byington, the first General Conference president 00:01:33.39\00:01:36.96 used his farm in upstate New York 00:01:36.99\00:01:39.33 as a stop on the Underground Railroad as well. 00:01:39.36\00:01:42.16 Early Adventists were encouraged 00:01:46.90\00:01:49.04 to help out in this defying the law of the land. 00:01:49.07\00:01:52.61 In 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed by Congress 00:01:52.64\00:01:56.81 to strengthen the earlier 00:01:56.85\00:01:58.45 but often neglected law of 1793. 00:01:58.48\00:02:01.58 It required any citizen 00:02:01.62\00:02:03.42 to return an escaped slave to his master 00:02:03.45\00:02:06.39 would find and punishment in case of violation. 00:02:06.42\00:02:09.92 Ellen White commenting on the relationship 00:02:09.96\00:02:12.19 that Adventists should have to this law set. 00:02:12.23\00:02:15.13 "The law of our land requiring us 00:02:15.16\00:02:17.50 to deliver an escaped slave to his master, 00:02:17.53\00:02:20.20 we are not to obey, and we must abide 00:02:20.24\00:02:22.94 the consequences of violating this law." 00:02:22.97\00:02:25.84 J. N. Loughborough, J. N. Andrews, 00:02:28.88\00:02:30.95 Uriah Smith, Joseph Bates, and James White, 00:02:30.98\00:02:34.15 all wrote and held positions against slavery. 00:02:34.18\00:02:37.09 The church was advocating a revolutionary new approach 00:02:37.12\00:02:40.56 and endeavoring to adhere to biblical principles 00:02:40.59\00:02:43.49 over culture and the norms of society. 00:02:43.53\00:02:46.09 Ellen White also advocated 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.93 that those who held pro-slavery views 00:02:47.96\00:02:50.53 should be disfellowshipped from church. 00:02:50.57\00:02:52.73 As soon as slavery was abolished, 00:02:56.60\00:02:58.77 the Adventist Church made inroads 00:02:58.81\00:03:00.91 into the Southern states, 00:03:00.94\00:03:02.31 and Edson White's Morning Star boat 00:03:02.34\00:03:04.85 pioneered the work in many new areas. 00:03:04.88\00:03:07.82 Schools, churches, printing presses, sanitariums, 00:03:07.85\00:03:12.02 and food companies were opened. 00:03:12.05\00:03:14.12 As the work progressed, 00:03:14.16\00:03:15.52 the need arose for a school to train workers. 00:03:15.56\00:03:18.43 And on November the 16th, 1896, 00:03:18.46\00:03:21.76 Oakwood Industrial School was opened. 00:03:21.80\00:03:24.70 Oakwood will go on to be a flagship school 00:03:29.10\00:03:31.67 amongst the African-American community 00:03:31.71\00:03:33.78 here in North America. 00:03:33.81\00:03:35.28 And for over 120 years now, 00:03:35.31\00:03:37.51 they have educated thousands of students, 00:03:37.55\00:03:40.22 sending graduates all around the world. 00:03:40.25\00:03:43.25 Some of their most famous graduates 00:03:43.28\00:03:45.09 would include evangelists, 00:03:45.12\00:03:46.79 E.E. Cleveland, and C.D. Brooks, 00:03:46.82\00:03:49.79 just two of the many prolific pastors 00:03:49.82\00:03:52.13 that have passed through this campus. 00:03:52.16\00:03:54.30 Oakwood is also famous for its world renowned choir, 00:03:54.33\00:03:58.03 the Oakwood Aeolians. 00:03:58.07\00:03:59.83 Oakwood will also play a role 00:03:59.87\00:04:01.44 in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s 00:04:01.47\00:04:04.37 hosting Dr. Martin Luther King, who spoke here on this campus 00:04:04.41\00:04:08.51 after there was nowhere else in the city 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.41 that would have him. 00:04:10.45\00:04:11.78 As the church we once held positions 00:04:15.62\00:04:17.52 on matters of equality and justice 00:04:17.55\00:04:19.55 that was ahead of general society 00:04:19.59\00:04:21.82 rather than behind it. 00:04:21.86\00:04:23.19 In some ways, we have lost this radical edge, 00:04:23.22\00:04:25.79 finding comfort in the accepted norms of practice Christianity 00:04:25.83\00:04:30.07 rather than seeking clear biblical practice 00:04:30.10\00:04:32.63 in all that we do. 00:04:32.67\00:04:34.37 This radical and revolutionary edge 00:04:34.40\00:04:36.47 that we once had needs to be reclaimed, 00:04:36.50\00:04:38.74 and as a church, 00:04:38.77\00:04:40.11 we ought to be at the forefront of social change, 00:04:40.14\00:04:42.58 demonstrating the gospel in our communities 00:04:42.61\00:04:45.18 as we seek to relieve the suffering of humanity. 00:04:45.21\00:04:48.38 "There is something about your Adventist fires," 00:06:24.95\00:06:27.62 local fire chief Weekes remarked. 00:06:27.65\00:06:30.12 He had fought two Adventist fires 00:06:30.15\00:06:32.39 with his success score being zero. 00:06:32.42\00:06:34.76 He also said that the water poured on 00:06:34.79\00:06:37.66 acted more like gasoline. 00:06:37.69\00:06:40.26 Ellen White had warned the Review 00:06:40.30\00:06:41.90 that they were on dangerous ground 00:06:41.93\00:06:43.80 and was not surprised when she heard of the fire 00:06:43.83\00:06:46.77 on December the 30th, 1902. 00:06:46.80\00:06:49.77 In 1901, she had written to the managers of the Review 00:06:49.80\00:06:53.68 and said, "I have been almost afraid 00:06:53.71\00:06:55.98 to open the Review, 00:06:56.01\00:06:57.41 fearing that God has cleansed the publishing house by fire." 00:06:57.45\00:07:01.02 The Review had gotten itself into a situation, 00:07:06.76\00:07:09.79 whereas publishing more commercial work 00:07:09.82\00:07:12.13 than what its original intention was. 00:07:12.16\00:07:15.03 It had come a long way 00:07:15.06\00:07:16.40 since the early days in Paris Hill, Maine, 00:07:16.43\00:07:18.70 and the times of extreme sacrifice 00:07:18.73\00:07:21.20 in Rochester, New York. 00:07:21.24\00:07:22.67 It was now a huge institution, 00:07:22.70\00:07:25.17 the largest printing press in the state of Michigan. 00:07:25.21\00:07:28.44 On that day, though, nothing could stop the fire, 00:07:28.48\00:07:31.08 destroying the 40,000 square foot building, 00:07:31.11\00:07:34.15 with only the West building 00:07:34.18\00:07:35.72 that housed the General Conference offices 00:07:35.75\00:07:37.99 and book and bank depositories left standing. 00:07:38.02\00:07:40.66 The Review had on press at the time 00:07:45.39\00:07:47.56 a book by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, 00:07:47.60\00:07:49.66 entitled "The Living Temple." 00:07:49.70\00:07:52.00 This book had pantheistic strains throughout 00:07:52.03\00:07:54.70 and would have caused much harm to the Review if published. 00:07:54.74\00:07:58.14 The book marked a significant shift 00:07:58.17\00:08:00.14 in the philosophy of Dr. Kellogg, 00:08:00.18\00:08:02.21 who had started out with such great promise 00:08:02.24\00:08:04.51 and was one of the leading doctors in America. 00:08:04.55\00:08:06.98 Dr. Kellogg had become controlling and dictatorial 00:08:10.79\00:08:14.16 and was increasingly difficult 00:08:14.19\00:08:15.92 for the church leadership to work with. 00:08:15.96\00:08:18.23 Earlier that year on February the 18th, 00:08:18.26\00:08:20.30 the sanitarium suffered a fire. 00:08:20.33\00:08:22.60 Was it an accident or something bigger than that? 00:08:22.63\00:08:25.30 A warning for Dr. Kellogg to get back on track. 00:08:25.33\00:08:29.00 The Review had decided to relocate completely 00:08:29.04\00:08:31.74 to Washington DC in line with the new council 00:08:31.77\00:08:34.88 that so many institutions should not operate in one area. 00:08:34.91\00:08:38.61 Despite the warning 00:08:38.65\00:08:39.98 not to rebuild a large institution, 00:08:40.02\00:08:42.08 Dr. Kellogg not only rebuilt but doubled it in size, 00:08:42.12\00:08:45.72 from 106 patients in 1866 00:08:45.75\00:08:48.86 to over 7,000 by 1906. 00:08:48.89\00:08:51.83 It was a huge institution. 00:08:51.86\00:08:53.70 Unfortunately, Dr. Kellogg would end up leaving the church 00:08:58.43\00:09:02.14 being disfellowshipped in 1907 00:09:02.17\00:09:04.74 during some turbulent times for our church. 00:09:04.77\00:09:07.84 He refused to let go of the pantheistic ideas 00:09:07.88\00:09:10.71 in the book "The Living Temple," 00:09:10.75\00:09:12.28 and also some of his medical practices 00:09:12.31\00:09:15.18 started to become questionable. 00:09:15.22\00:09:17.39 Unfortunately, today, many of the health reform ideas 00:09:17.42\00:09:20.76 have been taken over 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.12 or have strong ties to Eastern religion 00:09:22.16\00:09:24.79 and the New Age Movement. 00:09:24.83\00:09:26.49 We need to be careful 00:09:26.53\00:09:27.86 that our health reform stays biblical 00:09:27.90\00:09:30.03 and is not influenced by these philosophies. 00:09:30.07\00:09:32.47 When John Harvey Kellogg broke away from the church, 00:09:36.37\00:09:39.37 to some people, it looked like the church would fall. 00:09:39.41\00:09:42.68 A lot of properties were in his name, 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.81 and he had more employees 00:09:44.85\00:09:46.58 than the whole General Conference. 00:09:46.61\00:09:48.58 Some people said that we needed to compromise 00:09:48.62\00:09:51.35 in order to keep him on board or else we wouldn't survive. 00:09:51.39\00:09:54.72 But over the next few years and decades, 00:09:54.76\00:09:57.16 the church would go on strong. 00:09:57.19\00:09:59.13 And a sanitarium that seemed so strong and vibrant 00:09:59.16\00:10:02.70 would become a pale shadow of its former glory, 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.83 struggling in the Great Depression 00:10:05.87\00:10:07.94 and eventually closing down. 00:10:07.97\00:10:09.77 Both institutions were huge. 00:10:12.84\00:10:15.04 And this in itself tells us something. 00:10:15.08\00:10:17.78 God does not respect the size of the institution. 00:10:17.81\00:10:21.08 Sometimes we think 00:10:21.12\00:10:22.45 because it's God's publishing house 00:10:22.48\00:10:23.89 or God's sanitarium, then He has to bless it. 00:10:23.92\00:10:26.79 No, He doesn't. 00:10:26.82\00:10:28.16 God is not want to be manipulated. 00:10:28.19\00:10:30.19 If we are persistent in doing our own thing 00:10:30.23\00:10:32.53 and blindly keep asking for God's blessing, 00:10:32.56\00:10:35.30 then there may come a time 00:10:35.33\00:10:36.67 when He removes it from our lives. 00:10:36.70\00:10:38.77 Size does not matter to God 00:10:38.80\00:10:40.87 or mean that we have His blessing. 00:10:40.90\00:10:42.90 Faithfulness does. 00:10:42.94\00:10:44.47 For us to get to Iona today, 00:11:16.54\00:11:18.21 we have to come to a town called Oban. 00:11:18.24\00:11:20.51 It's about three hours north of Glasgow, 00:11:20.54\00:11:23.61 which is about seven hours north of London. 00:11:23.65\00:11:27.22 From Oban, you have to take a ferry to the isle of Mull. 00:11:27.25\00:11:30.39 You drive one hour across the isle of Mull, 00:11:30.42\00:11:32.85 and then you have to take another ferry to get to Iona. 00:11:32.89\00:11:35.02 It takes at least, minimum one day, 00:11:35.06\00:11:38.33 if not two, just to arrive here. 00:11:38.36\00:11:40.90 On the journey up here, 00:11:40.93\00:11:42.26 my mind goes back to the missionaries 00:11:42.30\00:11:43.83 who would go out from here. 00:11:43.87\00:11:45.47 If it took us two days to get here, 00:11:45.50\00:11:47.34 how long would it have taken them 00:11:47.37\00:11:49.44 in the 500s and 600s and 700 AD 00:11:49.47\00:11:52.44 to leave from this island 00:11:52.47\00:11:54.41 and then spread out around Scotland, 00:11:54.44\00:11:56.54 England, Wales, 00:11:56.58\00:11:58.48 and then go across to Europe as missionaries. 00:11:58.51\00:12:01.28 They spent a long time, 00:12:01.32\00:12:03.32 long journeys traveling across as missionaries 00:12:03.35\00:12:06.39 throughout the British Isles and throughout Europe 00:12:06.42\00:12:08.96 because they believe fervently in the gospel 00:12:08.99\00:12:12.59 which they had learned here 00:12:12.63\00:12:14.30 in this mission training institute. 00:12:14.33\00:12:16.73 God's calling us today as well to be missionaries for Him. 00:12:16.77\00:12:20.10 It may even be just crossing the road 00:12:20.14\00:12:21.70 and speaking to a neighbor, 00:12:21.74\00:12:23.07 and maybe talking to someone at university 00:12:23.10\00:12:25.24 and maybe going to a faraway country 00:12:25.27\00:12:27.58 or wherever God is calling you today, 00:12:27.61\00:12:29.84 may you take up a call and be a missionary for Him. 00:12:29.88\00:12:32.81 When I was growing up, if you wanted to study history 00:12:54.87\00:12:57.34 or do research on a particular topic, 00:12:57.37\00:12:59.47 there was really only one option that we had, 00:12:59.51\00:13:01.94 and that was to read a book. 00:13:01.98\00:13:03.78 And I never really used to like reading that much. 00:13:03.81\00:13:06.11 So we decided to create a resource 00:13:06.15\00:13:08.05 that will translate this written information 00:13:08.08\00:13:10.12 into the language of today. 00:13:10.15\00:13:14.02 My name is Adam Ramdin. 00:13:14.06\00:13:15.39 And my name is Clive Coutet. 00:13:15.42\00:13:16.76 And we are the cofounders of Lineage Journey. 00:13:16.79\00:13:19.59 Back in 2016, I was reading "The Great Controversy" 00:13:19.63\00:13:22.06 and I was really struggling 00:13:22.10\00:13:23.43 to find any relevant video resources 00:13:23.47\00:13:25.23 that I could use to aid me in my study. 00:13:25.27\00:13:27.24 So I decided to approach Adam 00:13:27.27\00:13:28.60 about the possibility of making some videos 00:13:28.64\00:13:30.51 on the Reformation. 00:13:30.54\00:13:32.07 So we started filming in the end of 2016, 00:13:32.11\00:13:34.98 and in 2017, we released 48 videos 00:13:35.01\00:13:38.61 that covered the period of the early church 00:13:38.65\00:13:40.88 all the way through to the end of the Reformation. 00:13:40.92\00:13:44.15 Then in 2018 and 2019, 00:13:44.19\00:13:46.19 we released another 52 episodes on church history. 00:13:46.22\00:13:49.89 These have now been viewed all over the world 00:13:49.92\00:13:52.43 in over 100 countries 00:13:52.46\00:13:54.06 covering about 50 different languages. 00:13:54.10\00:13:56.36 And we have over 3 million views online. 00:13:56.40\00:13:59.63 These videos have been used as a resource 00:13:59.67\00:14:01.87 in both secular and Christian schools 00:14:01.90\00:14:04.34 as well as several church denominations 00:14:04.37\00:14:06.47 across the globe 00:14:06.51\00:14:07.84 using Bible studies, study groups 00:14:07.88\00:14:10.11 as well as played to the general congregation. 00:14:10.15\00:14:12.25 They also make a great online evangelistic tool 00:14:12.28\00:14:15.02 where people are able to share them, 00:14:15.05\00:14:16.58 and we've seen them go into countries 00:14:16.62\00:14:17.95 that we ourselves can't go, 00:14:17.99\00:14:19.45 countries that are Muslim countries 00:14:19.49\00:14:21.02 where the Christian message cannot go. 00:14:21.06\00:14:23.63 One of the challenges we have, though, 00:14:23.66\00:14:25.43 is that amongst our team of almost 10 people, 00:14:25.46\00:14:27.63 we are all volunteers on this project, 00:14:27.66\00:14:29.56 sacrificing our time, our effort, and energy 00:14:29.60\00:14:32.00 in order to make these resources together. 00:14:32.03\00:14:34.64 Just to put things into perspective, 00:14:34.67\00:14:36.47 each Lineage episode as well as the filming 00:14:36.50\00:14:39.04 takes an additional two to three days 00:14:39.07\00:14:40.94 in post-production. 00:14:40.98\00:14:42.31 That is a lot of time and sacrifice 00:14:42.34\00:14:44.38 that this team has made 00:14:44.41\00:14:45.75 in putting 100 episodes together. 00:14:45.78\00:14:47.48 So we need to raise the funds 00:14:47.52\00:14:48.92 to cover the cost of the filming 00:14:48.95\00:14:50.65 as well as the continued production costs 00:14:50.69\00:14:53.59 that come after that. 00:14:53.62\00:14:54.96 So for as little as $1 a month, 00:14:54.99\00:14:56.83 you can help us to expand this ministry 00:14:56.86\00:14:58.99 to create new resources 00:14:59.03\00:15:00.66 to reach more people across the world. 00:15:00.70\00:15:03.03 Thank you for visiting this page 00:15:03.06\00:15:04.60 and taking the time to watch this video. 00:15:04.63\00:15:06.84 We really appreciate that. 00:15:06.87\00:15:08.37 Thank you for your support of the ministry so far. 00:15:08.40\00:15:10.84 And we ask that you would prayerfully consider 00:15:10.87\00:15:13.11 being a partner with us on this Patreon page. 00:15:13.14\00:15:16.64 May God bless you. 00:15:16.68\00:15:18.01 And we ask that you continue to keep this ministry 00:15:18.05\00:15:20.35 and our future plans in prayer. 00:15:20.38\00:15:22.25 Loma Linda literally means beautiful hill 00:15:47.11\00:15:49.94 and the name of the area 00:15:49.98\00:15:51.31 predate its use as a sanitarium or hospital 00:15:51.35\00:15:54.72 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:15:54.75\00:15:56.82 Purchased in 1905 as one of three medical institutions 00:15:56.85\00:16:01.52 along with Paradise Valley and Glendale Sanitarium, 00:16:01.56\00:16:05.06 they added to the 26 sanitariums 00:16:05.09\00:16:07.60 that the church already had at the time. 00:16:07.63\00:16:10.43 Medical work was key in the early days of our church 00:16:10.47\00:16:14.24 and was something 00:16:14.27\00:16:15.60 that people sacrificed greatly for. 00:16:15.64\00:16:17.74 In 1902, Ellen White predicted 00:16:21.44\00:16:24.45 that properties would come on the market 00:16:24.48\00:16:26.55 in Southern California far below their original cost. 00:16:26.58\00:16:30.52 Paradise Valley was originally priced at 25,000, 00:16:30.55\00:16:34.39 then reduced to 12,000. 00:16:34.42\00:16:36.22 And finally purchased for just 4,000. 00:16:36.26\00:16:39.36 Glendale Hospital was priced at 50,000. 00:16:39.39\00:16:42.26 Then it was reduced to 26,000, 00:16:42.30\00:16:44.57 and then it came down to 12,000. 00:16:44.60\00:16:46.43 Ellen White had said there would be three though, 00:16:52.44\00:16:54.84 and so she instructed John Burden 00:16:54.88\00:16:57.18 to look for another property 00:16:57.21\00:16:58.78 between Riverside, San Bernardino and Redlands. 00:16:58.81\00:17:02.12 He found a 67 acre property 00:17:02.15\00:17:04.69 that was on the market for $155,000. 00:17:04.72\00:17:08.29 This was far too high. 00:17:08.32\00:17:10.09 Later on, it was reduced to 110,000 and then 85,000, 00:17:10.13\00:17:14.63 but this was still far too high. 00:17:14.66\00:17:17.17 The General Conference had just put in place 00:17:17.20\00:17:19.47 a no debt policy, 00:17:19.50\00:17:21.00 and they could not help out. 00:17:21.04\00:17:22.37 Eventually, the price came down to 40,000. 00:17:26.07\00:17:29.14 A very good price 00:17:29.18\00:17:30.51 as it included 31 acres of green land, 00:17:30.55\00:17:33.72 22 of alfalfa, a vegetable garden, 00:17:33.75\00:17:36.82 an apricot orchard, a barn, several cottages on the hill, 00:17:36.85\00:17:41.39 three of which are still standing today 00:17:41.42\00:17:43.93 and $15,000 worth of equipment and supplies. 00:17:43.96\00:17:48.00 They have to make an initial payment of $5,000 00:17:48.03\00:17:51.73 and then 3 monthly payments of $5,000 00:17:51.77\00:17:55.04 and then the remaining 20,000 at the end of 3 years. 00:17:55.07\00:17:59.07 This wasn't going to be easy, 00:17:59.11\00:18:01.21 but they were encouraged by the urging of Ellen White 00:18:01.24\00:18:04.25 that this would also be an educational center 00:18:04.28\00:18:07.18 in the future. 00:18:07.22\00:18:08.55 On the 12th of June, 1905, Ellen White visited 00:18:11.55\00:18:16.02 and as she came to the property, 00:18:16.06\00:18:17.73 she said several times that she had been here before. 00:18:17.76\00:18:21.26 While she had not visited in person, 00:18:21.30\00:18:23.60 she was referring to seeing the place in vision 00:18:23.63\00:18:26.47 2 years earlier in the autumn of 1903, 00:18:26.50\00:18:30.27 and also in October of 1901, 00:18:30.31\00:18:33.94 and a meeting of church members soon after 00:18:33.98\00:18:36.64 the conference president stood up and spoke 00:18:36.68\00:18:39.21 and mentioned how Ellen White had said 00:18:39.25\00:18:41.62 that this sanitarium should be the principal training center 00:18:41.65\00:18:45.52 on the West Coast. 00:18:45.55\00:18:46.92 Ellen White interrupted him and said 00:18:46.96\00:18:49.22 this will be the principal training center 00:18:49.26\00:18:52.16 on the West Coast. 00:18:52.19\00:18:53.53 Each month when the $5,000 needed to be paid, 00:18:57.30\00:19:00.90 it was a struggle 00:19:00.94\00:19:02.27 with church members across California, 00:19:02.30\00:19:04.67 making huge sacrificial offerings. 00:19:04.71\00:19:07.94 One month they had no money 00:19:07.98\00:19:09.71 until several hours before the deadline 00:19:09.74\00:19:12.11 when a check arrived in the post, 00:19:12.15\00:19:14.48 God had His hand in the process. 00:19:14.52\00:19:16.79 And instead of taking three years 00:19:16.82\00:19:19.02 to clear the outstanding amount, 00:19:19.05\00:19:21.26 it was paid off in 6 months, 00:19:21.29\00:19:23.56 meaning they got an additional deduction 00:19:23.59\00:19:25.89 of $1,000. 00:19:25.93\00:19:27.33 Over time, the institution would grow 00:19:30.37\00:19:32.93 to include the hospital and the training school, 00:19:32.97\00:19:35.60 which would later become a university 00:19:35.64\00:19:37.74 and in recent years, 00:19:37.77\00:19:39.11 a children's hospital has also been added. 00:19:39.14\00:19:41.88 One of the early names of the institution 00:19:41.91\00:19:44.41 was the Loma Linda College of Medical Evangelist 00:19:44.45\00:19:47.62 showing the link between evangelism and medicine. 00:19:47.65\00:19:51.55 Many missionaries have gone out from this institution 00:19:51.59\00:19:54.46 over the last 100 years to mission fields 00:19:54.49\00:19:57.23 both here at home but also many to abroad. 00:19:57.26\00:20:03.10 The medical work is to act as the right arm of the gospel, 00:20:03.13\00:20:07.00 supporting the gospel work of the church. 00:20:07.04\00:20:09.77 God needs medical evangelists today, 00:20:09.80\00:20:12.41 who will use their medical skills 00:20:12.44\00:20:14.44 to further the message 00:20:14.48\00:20:15.84 and reach people in their time of need. 00:20:15.88\00:20:18.91 Today, there is a need for people like this 00:20:18.95\00:20:20.82 to go all over the world, 00:20:20.85\00:20:22.82 to places that might seem risky, 00:20:22.85\00:20:25.15 to war torn countries, 00:20:25.19\00:20:26.92 to minister to those stricken by poverty, 00:20:26.96\00:20:29.59 to the young and the old as well as the wealthy 00:20:29.62\00:20:32.66 and those who see no apparent need of God 00:20:32.69\00:20:35.73 in their lives. 00:20:35.76\00:20:37.10 The medical work breaks down barriers 00:20:37.13\00:20:39.33 in ways that nothing else can. 00:20:39.37\00:20:41.70 If you were in this profession 00:20:41.74\00:20:43.34 or God is calling you to this work, 00:20:43.37\00:20:45.41 then may you use your talents for Him in this way. 00:20:45.44\00:20:48.44 Though Australia was not her home country, 00:21:44.30\00:21:46.43 she had no plans to leave. 00:21:46.47\00:21:48.30 And despite requests from Pastor O.A Olsen, 00:21:48.34\00:21:51.14 the GC president at the time, 00:21:51.17\00:21:53.27 she was happy to stay in Australia 00:21:53.31\00:21:55.38 writing to her son Edson 00:21:55.41\00:21:57.15 that she had no wish to return to America. 00:21:57.18\00:21:59.71 She enjoyed living in Sunnyside near Avondale 00:21:59.75\00:22:02.78 and thought that this would be her last home. 00:22:02.82\00:22:05.29 However in March of 1900, 00:22:05.32\00:22:07.46 she was overwhelmed by the conviction 00:22:07.49\00:22:09.72 that she was needed back in America, 00:22:09.76\00:22:11.76 and plans were made to set sail in August of that year. 00:22:11.79\00:22:15.33 Upon arriving back in California, 00:22:19.17\00:22:21.87 Ellen now needed to find a place to live and work. 00:22:21.90\00:22:25.37 Oakland had grown and changed considerably 00:22:25.41\00:22:28.54 since she last lived there. 00:22:28.58\00:22:30.65 Following her son Willie's advice, 00:22:30.68\00:22:32.98 she along with her assistant, 00:22:33.01\00:22:35.02 Sarah McEnterfer headed to the St. Helena Sanitarium 00:22:35.05\00:22:38.89 to get some rest while he continued to look. 00:22:38.92\00:22:42.39 Someone at the sanitarium 00:22:42.42\00:22:43.99 mentioned that there was a house for sale 00:22:44.03\00:22:46.39 just under the hill. 00:22:46.43\00:22:47.86 Upon inspection, it was agreed 00:22:47.90\00:22:50.20 that it would meet her every need. 00:22:50.23\00:22:52.13 It was well constructed and completely furnished. 00:22:52.17\00:22:55.50 The house now needed a name 00:22:55.54\00:22:57.77 and due to the large elm trees out front, 00:22:57.81\00:23:00.91 it was called Elmshaven. 00:23:00.94\00:23:02.71 It was whilst living here in this house 00:23:06.15\00:23:08.48 that she completed some of her key books 00:23:08.52\00:23:10.92 such as "Ministry of Healing," "Acts of the Apostle," 00:23:10.95\00:23:13.92 an updated version of "The Great Controversy." 00:23:13.96\00:23:16.99 As the years passed on, she traveled less and less. 00:23:17.03\00:23:20.46 And then 1909 GC session in Washington DC 00:23:20.50\00:23:24.87 would be her last major trip. 00:23:24.90\00:23:26.94 Towards the end of her life, 00:23:30.21\00:23:32.07 Ellen White wrote lot of council 00:23:32.11\00:23:34.44 on the need to work the larger cities 00:23:34.48\00:23:36.75 and strongly encouraged church leaders 00:23:36.78\00:23:39.45 to work the big cities of San Francisco, 00:23:39.48\00:23:42.48 New York, Boston, and Los Angeles. 00:23:42.52\00:23:45.49 She was frustrated by the lack of enthusiasm 00:23:45.52\00:23:48.32 and support and the focus on obstacles. 00:23:48.36\00:23:51.69 After some modest plans were laid, 00:23:51.73\00:23:54.26 A.G. Daniells, the General Conference president 00:23:54.30\00:23:57.23 at the time was in California 00:23:57.27\00:23:59.43 and wanted to visit with Ellen White. 00:23:59.47\00:24:01.70 He came here to Elmshaven, 00:24:01.74\00:24:03.81 but the messenger of the Lord refused to see him. 00:24:03.84\00:24:06.78 She sent words to him 00:24:06.81\00:24:08.31 that when he was ready to follow 00:24:08.34\00:24:09.98 the work that needed to be done, 00:24:10.01\00:24:12.01 then she would talk to him. 00:24:12.05\00:24:13.65 He then wrote a humble and contrite letter 00:24:19.12\00:24:21.82 to Ellen White. 00:24:21.86\00:24:23.19 He then received a message in response that said, 00:24:23.22\00:24:26.03 when the president of the General Conference 00:24:26.06\00:24:28.36 is converted, 00:24:28.40\00:24:29.73 he will know what to do with the messages 00:24:29.76\00:24:31.67 that God has sent him. 00:24:31.70\00:24:33.70 Soon afterwards, 00:24:33.74\00:24:35.20 they released Elder Daniells for one year 00:24:35.24\00:24:37.97 from his normal duties as General Conference president 00:24:38.01\00:24:41.44 so he could pursue leadership in city evangelism. 00:24:41.48\00:24:45.25 He chose New York City and finally fulfilled 00:24:45.28\00:24:49.22 what God had intended for him to do in evangelistic work 00:24:49.25\00:24:53.15 and help launch a new day 00:24:53.19\00:24:55.29 in Seventh-day Adventist city evangelism. 00:24:55.32\00:24:58.19 A.G. Daniells had heard the council 00:25:02.33\00:25:04.57 about working the cities, 00:25:04.60\00:25:06.20 but he hadn't fully applied himself to it. 00:25:06.23\00:25:09.20 Oftentimes we can be like that. 00:25:09.24\00:25:11.21 We know what we ought to do, but we don't take it seriously. 00:25:11.24\00:25:14.68 And we want God to give us more counsel 00:25:14.71\00:25:17.01 or to affirm what we already are doing. 00:25:17.05\00:25:20.18 God needs people who will follow the light 00:25:20.22\00:25:22.22 that He gives. 00:25:22.25\00:25:23.59 And then as they follow that, He will give them more light 00:25:23.62\00:25:25.62 as He guide them along the pathway of life. 00:25:25.65\00:25:28.62 Let us be faithful to God in all areas of our lives. 00:25:28.66\00:25:32.99
