Ellen White didn't just provide instruction 00:00:16.38\00:00:18.71 to the church and individuals in it, 00:00:18.75\00:00:21.32 but she also received visions 00:00:21.35\00:00:23.32 that dealt with real life issues and events 00:00:23.35\00:00:26.62 in contemporary society in her day. 00:00:26.65\00:00:29.49 She lived during the civil war and received visions on this 00:00:29.52\00:00:33.83 before and during the war. 00:00:33.86\00:00:36.80 If we rewind a few years we see that the great awakening 00:00:36.83\00:00:40.64 was linked with the abolition movement. 00:00:40.67\00:00:42.70 And in fact all the early Adventist pioneers 00:00:42.74\00:00:45.57 were abolitionists. 00:00:45.61\00:00:47.18 The issue of slavery would come to a head in the civil war 00:00:47.21\00:00:51.35 and God would have His say on this terrible institution. 00:00:51.38\00:00:55.48 South Carolina would be the first state 00:01:00.66\00:01:03.19 to secede on the 20th of December, 1860. 00:01:03.22\00:01:07.20 And 23 days later, 00:01:07.23\00:01:09.13 Ellen White would have her first civil war vision 00:01:09.16\00:01:11.90 in Parkville, Michigan, here in this church. 00:01:11.93\00:01:15.37 It's unlikely that she knew 00:01:15.40\00:01:17.21 that in the three days before her vision, 00:01:17.24\00:01:19.54 three more states would secede, 00:01:19.57\00:01:21.44 but either way it will be three months 00:01:21.48\00:01:23.65 before the civil war started 00:01:23.68\00:01:25.58 when the confederate forces fired 00:01:25.61\00:01:27.32 on Fort Sumter in South Carolina 00:01:27.35\00:01:29.85 after the union forces had previously taken it over. 00:01:29.88\00:01:33.76 The conventional wisdom in the North 00:01:33.79\00:01:36.02 was that there would be no civil war 00:01:36.06\00:01:38.23 or if that there was, 00:01:38.26\00:01:39.59 it would be extremely short 00:01:39.63\00:01:41.26 with a quick victory for the union. 00:01:41.30\00:01:43.87 Ellen White correctly predicted that there would be war, 00:01:43.90\00:01:47.54 that there would be a long war 00:01:47.57\00:01:49.24 and that people in the audience 00:01:49.27\00:01:50.71 that day would lose sons in the war. 00:01:50.74\00:01:53.38 Her second civil war vision happened here 00:01:57.91\00:02:00.52 in the Roosevelt Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:02:00.55\00:02:02.98 in New York State on August 3rd, 1861. 00:02:03.02\00:02:07.52 She was standing behind this very pulpit, 00:02:07.56\00:02:10.36 though it would have been located 00:02:10.39\00:02:11.73 on the other side of the church. 00:02:11.76\00:02:14.00 She saw that slavery was a sin 00:02:14.03\00:02:16.56 and that upholding it was in direct contrast 00:02:16.60\00:02:19.40 to the teachings of Christ. 00:02:19.43\00:02:21.30 She also saw that God was using the civil war 00:02:21.34\00:02:24.27 to punish both sides. 00:02:24.31\00:02:26.07 The South for practicing slavery 00:02:26.11\00:02:28.51 and the North for so long suffering 00:02:28.54\00:02:30.58 its overreaching and overbearing influence. 00:02:30.61\00:02:34.42 Perhaps most fascinating of all 00:02:34.45\00:02:36.69 was a insight into the battle of Manassas, 00:02:36.72\00:02:39.65 sometimes called the Battle of Bull Run. 00:02:39.69\00:02:42.52 On July the 21st, 1861, 00:02:48.13\00:02:50.97 the northern troops approached Manassas 00:02:51.00\00:02:53.17 for the first time, 00:02:53.20\00:02:54.80 expecting a swift victory as they were in the ascendency. 00:02:54.84\00:02:58.97 At one point in the battle they were pushing ahead 00:02:59.01\00:03:01.78 when as Ellen White describes, 00:03:01.81\00:03:03.45 an angel descended from heaven to the battlefield 00:03:03.48\00:03:06.78 and waved his hand backwards. 00:03:06.82\00:03:09.08 Instantly there was confusion in the ranks. 00:03:09.12\00:03:12.95 The northern forces thought they were in retreat 00:03:12.99\00:03:15.26 when it was not so in reality. 00:03:15.29\00:03:16.96 But a retreat commenced. 00:03:16.99\00:03:18.89 Lieutenant Colonel WW Blackwood, 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.76 writing later says that, 00:03:21.80\00:03:23.47 "The lines of blue that had been so well defined 00:03:23.50\00:03:27.07 and unbroken suddenly became like a swarm of bees 00:03:27.10\00:03:30.91 running away as fast as they could." 00:03:30.94\00:03:33.68 Many American civil war historians 00:03:39.75\00:03:41.98 recognize a mysterious element in this battle, 00:03:42.02\00:03:45.22 though virtually all understandably fail 00:03:45.25\00:03:47.76 to see a supernatural element in its genesis. 00:03:47.79\00:03:50.93 Today at the battlefield of Manassas, 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.33 you can see the various plaques that dot the field 00:03:53.36\00:03:56.23 that recount the sudden retreat of the Northern troops 00:03:56.26\00:03:59.40 and an unlikely victory 00:03:59.43\00:04:00.84 that was won that day for the South. 00:04:00.87\00:04:02.90 Then her angel explained that, 00:04:07.64\00:04:09.24 "God had this nation in his own hand 00:04:09.28\00:04:12.11 and would not allow victories 00:04:12.15\00:04:13.68 to be gained faster than He ordained." 00:04:13.72\00:04:16.18 The North was not to be allowed to win a quick decisive battle 00:04:16.22\00:04:20.16 thus bringing an abrupt end to the war 00:04:20.19\00:04:22.72 because it would be punished 00:04:22.76\00:04:24.23 for condoning slavery before the war 00:04:24.26\00:04:26.96 and also for not making abolition 00:04:27.00\00:04:29.23 the principal ethical issue in the war. 00:04:29.26\00:04:32.47 This vision shows how God involves Himself 00:04:32.50\00:04:35.04 in the affairs of men and does not stand idly by 00:04:35.07\00:04:39.01 as we sometimes feel. 00:04:39.04\00:04:40.44 The prophetic gift was given 00:04:45.38\00:04:46.98 to address a major social and political issue of the day 00:04:47.02\00:04:50.99 showing the relevancy and the practical side of it. 00:04:51.02\00:04:53.86 Today there are some that say as Christians, 00:04:53.89\00:04:55.99 we shouldn't get involved in social issues 00:04:56.02\00:04:58.53 but should just preach the gospel. 00:04:58.56\00:05:00.66 But whilst preaching the gospel we should seek to do justly, 00:05:00.70\00:05:04.23 love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. 00:05:04.27\00:05:07.44 Some of the issues 00:05:07.47\00:05:08.80 that have been around for centuries 00:05:08.84\00:05:10.17 are still around in our day. 00:05:10.21\00:05:11.87 And as Christians 00:05:11.91\00:05:13.24 we should seek to fight injustice 00:05:13.27\00:05:15.14 and seek mercy for others. 00:05:15.18\00:05:17.38 May our religion be practical and meet the needs of society, 00:05:17.41\00:05:21.28 demonstrating the love of God wherever we are. 00:05:21.32\00:05:24.59 The Adventist Church was in its infancy 00:05:56.65\00:05:59.19 with a membership that was only in the tens of thousands 00:05:59.22\00:06:03.02 and yet it had already made ventures 00:06:03.06\00:06:05.46 into the publishing work and the health work. 00:06:05.49\00:06:08.13 Despite a small membership it would soon move 00:06:08.16\00:06:11.13 into the educational field as well 00:06:11.17\00:06:14.04 with a vision far greater 00:06:14.07\00:06:16.14 than the reality of church life at the time. 00:06:16.17\00:06:19.51 A school had started in 1868 by Goodloe Harper Bell 00:06:19.54\00:06:24.21 that was supported locally here in Battle Creek. 00:06:24.25\00:06:27.58 But in 1872, James and Ellen White 00:06:27.62\00:06:30.79 would call for the upgrading of this school 00:06:30.82\00:06:33.32 into an advanced educational institution 00:06:33.36\00:06:36.09 and also for the denomination to support the school. 00:06:36.12\00:06:39.56 As guidance for the school, 00:06:46.30\00:06:47.80 Ellen White wrote Testimony for the Church, number 22, 00:06:47.84\00:06:51.71 where she developed the fundamental principle 00:06:51.74\00:06:54.08 of the correlation between the physical, mental, 00:06:54.11\00:06:57.45 moral and religious aspects of education. 00:06:57.48\00:07:00.88 The Bible was not to be just an elected option to study 00:07:00.92\00:07:04.45 but was to be infused throughout the whole curriculum 00:07:04.49\00:07:07.52 eliminating the classics as their main thrust. 00:07:07.56\00:07:11.13 Initially the teachers and administrators 00:07:11.16\00:07:13.46 struggled to implement 00:07:13.50\00:07:15.06 what they probably didn't fully understand themselves. 00:07:15.10\00:07:18.57 As well as making the curriculum Bible based, 00:07:18.60\00:07:21.57 there was also the admonition 00:07:21.60\00:07:23.44 to include a manual labor program. 00:07:23.47\00:07:25.74 Education was to move away 00:07:31.61\00:07:34.12 from the Latin and Greek classics 00:07:34.15\00:07:36.02 and be holistic, focusing on character development 00:07:36.05\00:07:39.79 and daily reminding the students 00:07:39.82\00:07:41.76 of their obligation to God. 00:07:41.79\00:07:43.59 To live for Him and be a missionary 00:07:43.63\00:07:45.96 wherever they were. 00:07:45.99\00:07:47.83 The focus on manual labor and missionary work 00:07:47.86\00:07:50.43 is reflected in the early names of these schools. 00:07:50.47\00:07:54.17 The College of Medical Evangelist, 00:07:54.20\00:07:56.71 Emmanuel Missionary College. 00:07:56.74\00:07:58.84 Southern Missionary College, 00:07:58.87\00:08:00.84 Australasian Missionary College, 00:08:00.88\00:08:03.14 and Oakwood Industrial School. 00:08:03.18\00:08:05.35 The purpose was for mission. 00:08:05.38\00:08:07.62 The name of the school 00:08:07.65\00:08:08.98 reflected the purpose of the church, 00:08:09.02\00:08:11.05 to train missionaries at home and abroad. 00:08:11.09\00:08:13.99 The vision to start 00:08:19.49\00:08:20.83 a comprehensive educational system 00:08:20.86\00:08:23.10 would mushroom and grow. 00:08:23.13\00:08:25.03 Education is such a key evangelistic strategy. 00:08:25.07\00:08:28.84 The places today where the church is stronger 00:08:28.87\00:08:31.81 have a strong Adventist educational system 00:08:31.84\00:08:34.81 that is valued and supported by the members. 00:08:34.84\00:08:38.31 Education that recognizes 00:08:38.35\00:08:40.05 it's not just for academic advancement 00:08:40.08\00:08:43.08 but that it's also evangelistic and redemptive. 00:08:43.12\00:08:46.12 Echoing the words of Ellen White that, 00:08:46.15\00:08:48.39 "Education and redemption are one." 00:08:48.42\00:08:50.99 The work of education now encompasses the globe 00:08:55.86\00:08:59.30 with the largest Protestant school system, 00:08:59.33\00:09:02.00 but our strength lies not in our size, 00:09:02.04\00:09:05.04 but in our faithfulness to the original purpose 00:09:05.07\00:09:07.78 of setting up the educational school system. 00:09:07.81\00:09:10.88 Practical education with a clear mission focus 00:09:10.91\00:09:14.25 was the primary motivating factor 00:09:14.28\00:09:16.75 rather than just academic excellence. 00:09:16.79\00:09:19.32 Many today do not have the opportunity 00:09:24.36\00:09:26.73 of an Adventist education. 00:09:26.76\00:09:28.63 If that is you, 00:09:28.66\00:09:30.00 then may you be a witness in your school or university 00:09:30.03\00:09:33.10 like the Waldensians in the years gone by. 00:09:33.13\00:09:35.87 Proverb says, "Train up a child in the way he shall go 00:09:35.90\00:09:39.77 and when he is old he will not depart from it." 00:09:39.81\00:09:43.45 Whether it's at Sabbath school, 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.41 home school, or Adventist school, 00:09:45.45\00:09:47.55 we see that education is vitally important 00:09:47.58\00:09:50.75 in solidifying what we believe 00:09:50.79\00:09:53.15 as well as giving us the skills that we need in life. 00:09:53.19\00:09:56.66 If you live near a school then support it. 00:09:56.69\00:09:59.46 Support the youth who are attending, 00:09:59.49\00:10:01.46 whether it's financially, through your prayers, 00:10:01.50\00:10:03.87 by volunteering, by working 00:10:03.90\00:10:05.93 or in whatever way that you can. 00:10:05.97\00:10:07.94 In July of 1849, 00:10:49.38\00:10:51.91 James White packed copies of the present truth 00:10:51.95\00:10:55.05 into a borrowed carpet bag and walked eight miles 00:10:55.08\00:10:58.72 to Middletown, Connecticut. 00:10:58.75\00:11:00.69 He was taking the first steps 00:11:00.72\00:11:02.16 in what would become a global publishing ministry. 00:11:02.19\00:11:05.96 The publishing work was extremely effective 00:11:05.99\00:11:08.30 in early Adventism, 00:11:08.33\00:11:09.83 both as a form of evangelism 00:11:09.86\00:11:11.83 and also as keeping a sense of cohesion 00:11:11.87\00:11:14.74 amongst the believers. 00:11:14.77\00:11:16.34 Prior to the great disappointment, 00:11:16.37\00:11:18.14 it was very important, 00:11:18.17\00:11:19.54 and after 1848 when Ellen White 00:11:19.57\00:11:22.11 had her vision that her husband should start a magazine 00:11:22.14\00:11:25.41 and that the paper would be like streams of light 00:11:25.45\00:11:28.32 going around the world. 00:11:28.35\00:11:29.68 The work increased in effectiveness. 00:11:29.72\00:11:31.95 In 1853, the Review and Herald Publishing Association 00:11:38.23\00:11:42.33 bought its first printing press 00:11:42.36\00:11:44.40 and based itself out of the house 00:11:44.43\00:11:46.57 that James and Ellen White rented 00:11:46.60\00:11:48.34 in Rochester, New York. 00:11:48.37\00:11:49.80 It then moved to Battle Creek, Michigan 00:11:49.84\00:11:51.97 and continued to grow 00:11:52.01\00:11:53.41 and things would take a twist in the 1880s 00:11:53.44\00:11:56.24 when James White met a young Canadian 00:11:56.28\00:11:58.55 named George King 00:11:58.58\00:11:59.91 who desperately wanted to be a preacher. 00:11:59.95\00:12:02.38 He stayed with them for a few weeks, 00:12:02.42\00:12:04.42 but James White was unconvinced 00:12:04.45\00:12:06.45 that he had what it took to be a preacher. 00:12:06.49\00:12:08.69 James White then approached Brother Godsmarth 00:12:13.73\00:12:16.30 and told him about George King 00:12:16.33\00:12:18.27 and asked if he could live on the farm and work 00:12:18.30\00:12:20.80 and then maybe after a year 00:12:20.84\00:12:22.64 he would be able to go and preach. 00:12:22.67\00:12:24.94 He was a tall and slim man 00:12:24.97\00:12:26.57 and as he moved into this new home, 00:12:26.61\00:12:28.54 he would often preach in the living room 00:12:28.58\00:12:30.58 to the empty chairs. 00:12:30.61\00:12:32.21 It was soon arranged that he preach his first sermon 00:12:32.25\00:12:35.32 to some of the church members, 00:12:35.35\00:12:36.75 but it was a blundering failure and anything but to the point. 00:12:36.79\00:12:40.76 After a season of prayer, 00:12:40.79\00:12:42.42 the mother of the home stood up and said 00:12:42.46\00:12:44.49 that he could never be a preacher 00:12:44.53\00:12:46.33 and that he could not hold the attention of a crowd. 00:12:46.36\00:12:48.93 But he could be a fire-side preacher 00:12:48.96\00:12:51.10 and share books and tracks in people's homes 00:12:51.13\00:12:53.84 and spread the message this way. 00:12:53.87\00:12:55.70 He accepted this as the will of God 00:13:00.51\00:13:03.08 and the next Monday, 00:13:03.11\00:13:04.45 he packed his satchel full of magazines 00:13:04.48\00:13:06.78 and took two dollars and set off for the week. 00:13:06.82\00:13:10.25 The next Sabbath he was overwhelmed 00:13:10.29\00:13:12.32 at how much God had blessed him 00:13:12.35\00:13:14.52 and encouraged by the people he was able to speak to 00:13:14.56\00:13:17.53 as well as the 62 cents that he had earned. 00:13:17.56\00:13:20.80 The next week he was able to convert 00:13:20.83\00:13:22.76 nearly all the books in his bag to cash 00:13:22.80\00:13:25.70 and soon persuaded the brethren at the Review and Herald 00:13:25.73\00:13:28.80 to make a special book to use in the homes, 00:13:28.84\00:13:31.27 Thoughts on Daniel and Revelation by Uriah Smith. 00:13:31.31\00:13:34.41 And so the work of literature evangelism 00:13:39.65\00:13:42.32 would start with a man 00:13:42.35\00:13:43.72 who James White didn't know what to do with. 00:13:43.75\00:13:46.49 The work of literature evangelism 00:13:46.52\00:13:48.52 would grow and spread 00:13:48.56\00:13:49.92 and become a huge ministry in and of itself. 00:13:49.96\00:13:52.89 Key in the early days of our church 00:13:52.93\00:13:55.36 as it encompassed the globe. 00:13:55.40\00:13:57.67 The ministry is still active today, 00:13:57.70\00:13:59.97 both with summer programs 00:14:00.00\00:14:01.37 with academy age young people and university age students 00:14:01.40\00:14:05.01 and also with full time workers. 00:14:05.04\00:14:07.58 The story of George King teaches us 00:14:12.98\00:14:15.58 that whilst we may not be able to do the exact ministry 00:14:15.62\00:14:18.79 that we have set our hearts on, 00:14:18.82\00:14:20.46 God may have another work for us 00:14:20.49\00:14:22.39 that we haven't even thought of yet 00:14:22.42\00:14:24.39 and may use other people to guide us there. 00:14:24.43\00:14:27.23 When we are humbled and teachable, 00:14:27.26\00:14:29.36 there is no limit to how God may use us. 00:14:29.40\00:14:32.23 When I was growing up, if you wanted to study history 00:14:51.02\00:14:53.52 or do research on a particular topic, 00:14:53.56\00:14:55.79 there was really only one option that we had 00:14:55.82\00:14:58.23 and that was to read a book. 00:14:58.26\00:15:00.06 And I never really used to like reading that much. 00:15:00.10\00:15:02.36 So we decided to create a resource 00:15:02.40\00:15:04.27 that would translate this written information 00:15:04.30\00:15:06.47 into the language of today. 00:15:06.50\00:15:10.24 My name's Adam Ramdin. 00:15:10.27\00:15:11.61 And my name is Clive Coutet. 00:15:11.64\00:15:12.97 And we are the cofounders of Lineage Journey. 00:15:13.01\00:15:15.81 Back in 2016, 00:15:15.84\00:15:17.18 I was reading The Great Controversy, 00:15:17.21\00:15:18.55 and I was really struggling 00:15:18.58\00:15:19.91 to find any relevant video resources 00:15:19.95\00:15:21.55 that I could use to aid me in my study. 00:15:21.58\00:15:23.55 So I decided to approach Adam 00:15:23.59\00:15:24.92 about the possibility of making some videos 00:15:24.95\00:15:26.82 on the Reformation. 00:15:26.86\00:15:28.36 So we started filming in the end of 2016 00:15:28.39\00:15:31.19 and in 2017 we released 48 videos 00:15:31.23\00:15:34.73 that covered the period of the early church 00:15:34.76\00:15:37.23 all the way through to the end of the Reformation. 00:15:37.27\00:15:40.40 Then in 2018 and 19, 00:15:40.44\00:15:42.40 we released another 52 episodes on church history. 00:15:42.44\00:15:46.17 These have now been viewed all over the world 00:15:46.21\00:15:48.71 in over 100 countries, 00:15:48.74\00:15:50.25 covering about 50 different languages 00:15:50.28\00:15:52.58 and we have over 3 million views online. 00:15:52.61\00:15:55.98 These videos have been used as a resource 00:15:56.02\00:15:58.22 in both secular and Christian schools 00:15:58.25\00:16:00.56 as well as several church denominations 00:16:00.59\00:16:02.79 across the globe. 00:16:02.82\00:16:04.16 Used in Bible studies, study groups, 00:16:04.19\00:16:06.36 as well as play to the general congregation. 00:16:06.39\00:16:08.56 They also make a great online evangelistic tool 00:16:08.60\00:16:11.33 where people are able to share them. 00:16:11.37\00:16:12.83 And we've seen them go into countries 00:16:12.87\00:16:14.20 that we are ourselves can't go. 00:16:14.24\00:16:15.74 Countries that are Muslim, 00:16:15.77\00:16:17.11 countries where the Christian message cannot go. 00:16:17.14\00:16:19.94 One of the challenges we have though, 00:16:19.97\00:16:21.68 is that amongst our team of almost ten people, 00:16:21.71\00:16:23.85 we are all volunteers on this project, 00:16:23.88\00:16:25.85 sacrificing our time, our effort, and our energy 00:16:25.88\00:16:28.25 in order to make these resources together. 00:16:28.28\00:16:30.89 Just to put things into perspective, 00:16:30.92\00:16:32.59 each Lineage episode as well as the filming 00:16:32.62\00:16:35.29 takes an additional two to three days 00:16:35.32\00:16:37.19 in post production. 00:16:37.23\00:16:38.56 That is a lot of time and sacrifice 00:16:38.59\00:16:40.60 that this team has made 00:16:40.63\00:16:41.96 in putting 100 episodes together. 00:16:42.00\00:16:43.60 So we need to raise the funds 00:16:43.63\00:16:45.13 to cover the cost of the filming 00:16:45.17\00:16:46.90 as well as the continued production costs 00:16:46.94\00:16:49.67 that come after that. 00:16:49.70\00:16:51.24 So for as little as one dollar a month, 00:16:51.27\00:16:53.17 you can help us to expand this ministry 00:16:53.21\00:16:55.31 to create new resources 00:16:55.34\00:16:56.95 to reach more people across the world. 00:16:56.98\00:16:59.25 Thank you for visiting this page 00:16:59.28\00:17:00.82 and taking the time to watch this video. 00:17:00.85\00:17:03.05 We really appreciate that. 00:17:03.08\00:17:04.65 Thank you for your support of the ministry so far 00:17:04.69\00:17:07.12 and we ask that you would prayerfully consider 00:17:07.16\00:17:09.29 being a partner with us on this Patreon page. 00:17:09.32\00:17:12.89 May God bless you 00:17:12.93\00:17:14.26 and we ask that you continue to keep this ministry 00:17:14.30\00:17:16.60 and our future plans in prayer. 00:17:16.63\00:17:18.37 For a long time the health work 00:17:33.78\00:17:35.68 has been heavily promoted in our church 00:17:35.72\00:17:38.12 and central to our evangelistic strategy. 00:17:38.15\00:17:41.22 Reports today speak of the Adventist blue zones 00:17:41.26\00:17:44.33 and note how Seventh-day Adventists 00:17:44.36\00:17:46.29 live between six and eight years longer 00:17:46.33\00:17:48.70 than the rest of the population. 00:17:48.73\00:17:50.77 The rates of disease such as cancer 00:17:50.80\00:17:53.13 and heart disease are significantly lower 00:17:53.17\00:17:55.67 than the rest of the population. 00:17:55.70\00:17:57.21 And some diseases such as lung cancer 00:17:57.24\00:17:59.91 are almost nonexistent. 00:17:59.94\00:18:02.38 How did this come to be? 00:18:02.41\00:18:04.11 Was it luck? Was it chance? 00:18:04.15\00:18:06.55 Or was it something greater than that? 00:18:06.58\00:18:08.78 In 1863 in Otsego, Michigan, 00:18:13.39\00:18:16.09 Ellen White was given her health vision 00:18:16.12\00:18:18.29 where she was shown things that were way ahead 00:18:18.33\00:18:20.93 of the medical practices of her time. 00:18:20.96\00:18:23.47 For example, she was shown that tobacco 00:18:23.50\00:18:25.83 was a slow, insidious and most malignant poison, 00:18:25.87\00:18:29.50 common knowledge to us today. 00:18:29.54\00:18:31.64 Yet in her time, 00:18:31.67\00:18:33.01 the medical wisdom would've prescribed 00:18:33.04\00:18:34.74 or least not deterred you from using tobacco, 00:18:34.78\00:18:37.91 should you have any throat or lung issues. 00:18:37.95\00:18:40.22 It wasn't until hundred years later 00:18:40.25\00:18:42.75 when the surgeon general of the United States 00:18:42.78\00:18:45.55 finally condemned the use of tobacco. 00:18:45.59\00:18:47.89 The vision was very broad in scope 00:18:53.83\00:18:56.50 and encouraged holistic health 00:18:56.53\00:18:58.30 and natural preventative medicine. 00:18:58.33\00:19:00.94 Whilst there is always a need for acute care, 00:19:00.97\00:19:03.71 preventative medicine seeks to prevent 00:19:03.74\00:19:06.31 as much as possible disease in the body. 00:19:06.34\00:19:09.58 Under Ellen White's guidance, they set up a health institute 00:19:09.61\00:19:13.18 called the Western Health Reform Institute. 00:19:13.21\00:19:16.48 Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, 00:19:16.52\00:19:18.35 today most famous for the world 00:19:18.39\00:19:20.49 renowned breakfast cereals that he invented 00:19:20.52\00:19:23.43 became the director of this institute 00:19:23.46\00:19:25.53 at the young age of 24. 00:19:25.56\00:19:27.66 John Harvey Kellogg attended some 00:19:31.43\00:19:33.10 of the best medical schools in his day, 00:19:33.13\00:19:35.87 the University Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan 00:19:35.90\00:19:39.54 and the New York University Medical College 00:19:39.57\00:19:42.21 at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. 00:19:42.24\00:19:45.35 He graduated in 1875 00:19:45.38\00:19:48.05 and would go on to be one of the leading doctors 00:19:48.08\00:19:50.55 in the United States, 00:19:50.59\00:19:52.15 treating both the rich and famous 00:19:52.19\00:19:54.22 as well as those less fortunate. 00:19:54.26\00:19:56.56 He changed the name 00:19:56.59\00:19:57.93 to the Battle Creek Health Sanitarium. 00:19:57.96\00:20:00.33 Sanitarium is a twist on the word sanatorium, 00:20:00.36\00:20:03.77 which was a health resort for invalid soldiers. 00:20:03.80\00:20:06.53 Replacing the O with an A, 00:20:06.57\00:20:09.04 he thus created a new word for the English language. 00:20:09.07\00:20:12.91 He would go on to pioneer 00:20:18.51\00:20:19.85 some of the best medical practices of his day, 00:20:19.88\00:20:22.88 and invent some ingenious machines 00:20:22.92\00:20:25.22 that were the forerunners of much of the modern equipment 00:20:25.25\00:20:27.89 you'll see today in a gym. 00:20:27.92\00:20:29.72 Such as this rower machine and gripmaster. 00:20:29.76\00:20:32.29 Many of these were on the titanic 00:20:32.33\00:20:34.30 when it set sail for use by its wealthy passengers. 00:20:34.33\00:20:37.70 The sanatorium would start out as a great witness 00:20:37.73\00:20:40.64 to the message that God had given, 00:20:40.67\00:20:42.50 but it would later veer of track. 00:20:42.54\00:20:44.61 Unfortunately today this message 00:20:49.98\00:20:51.61 has often been neglected 00:20:51.65\00:20:53.48 and while many recognize that we do have a message 00:20:53.52\00:20:56.08 and understand the truth and validity of it. 00:20:56.12\00:20:58.99 Many people do not live up to what they know about health. 00:20:59.02\00:21:02.52 The health work was created to be the right arm. 00:21:02.56\00:21:06.13 It was to assist the gospel. 00:21:06.16\00:21:08.36 Not to be isolated on its own 00:21:08.40\00:21:10.80 but to work harmoniously together. 00:21:10.83\00:21:13.23 Healthy living was not to be an end in itself, 00:21:13.27\00:21:16.44 but its purpose was to work with the gospel, 00:21:16.47\00:21:19.34 creating an opening wedge to people's hearts. 00:21:19.37\00:21:22.68 May we implement these principles 00:21:22.71\00:21:24.61 first in our lives 00:21:24.65\00:21:26.48 and then also in the churches we are a part of 00:21:26.51\00:21:29.28 as we witness to the communities we live in. 00:21:29.32\00:21:31.92 The call had come from overseas, 00:22:28.94\00:22:31.11 please send someone. 00:22:31.15\00:22:32.68 The church was expanding from its North American roots 00:22:32.71\00:22:36.15 to further afield. 00:22:36.18\00:22:38.29 The plea had come from Europe 00:22:38.32\00:22:40.12 and the church leaders 00:22:40.16\00:22:41.49 in the United States had discussed it several times. 00:22:41.52\00:22:45.06 The need was there and finally in 1874, 00:22:45.09\00:22:48.76 the church voted to send J.N. Andrews 00:22:48.80\00:22:51.57 as the first official missionary 00:22:51.60\00:22:54.04 of the church. 00:22:54.07\00:22:55.40 Despite his wife dying just two years previous, 00:22:55.44\00:22:58.91 he remained undeterred and set sail 00:22:58.94\00:23:01.61 with his two young children for Europe. 00:23:01.64\00:23:04.48 The brethren in Europe had been told 00:23:04.51\00:23:06.68 that they're about to receive 00:23:06.72\00:23:08.32 the most ablest man in our ranks. 00:23:08.35\00:23:11.35 What qualified him to be the ablest man 00:23:16.89\00:23:20.00 in our ranks? 00:23:20.03\00:23:21.36 At the age of 25, 00:23:21.40\00:23:22.80 he wrote a paper that was presented 00:23:22.83\00:23:24.93 at the General Conference session 00:23:24.97\00:23:26.74 that persuaded the church to keep the Sabbath 00:23:26.77\00:23:29.00 from sunset to sunset. 00:23:29.04\00:23:30.97 He wrote the book The History of The Sabbath 00:23:31.01\00:23:32.94 at the age of 29. 00:23:32.97\00:23:34.61 He was elected General Conference president 00:23:34.64\00:23:36.85 at the age of 38. 00:23:36.88\00:23:38.81 He said he could recite the New Testament by memory 00:23:38.85\00:23:41.98 and much of the Old Testament. 00:23:42.02\00:23:44.19 And he secured non-combatant status 00:23:44.22\00:23:46.86 for Adventists in the civil war. 00:23:46.89\00:23:49.79 When as General Conference president 00:23:49.82\00:23:51.39 he posted the first Adventist camp meeting 00:23:51.43\00:23:54.30 in Wright, Michigan. 00:23:54.33\00:23:55.66 He would often go out at night and check on the tents 00:23:55.70\00:23:58.57 to make sure everyone was okay. 00:23:58.60\00:24:00.90 He was much loved, well respected 00:24:00.94\00:24:03.51 and was sent abroad with the church's blessings. 00:24:03.54\00:24:06.31 Initially docking in Liverpool, England, 00:24:12.65\00:24:15.15 before making his way across France to Switzerland. 00:24:15.18\00:24:17.95 Arriving in Switzerland the task ahead of him was huge. 00:24:17.99\00:24:22.22 Although he was not a pioneer missionary 00:24:22.26\00:24:24.33 as some work had already taken place before him, 00:24:24.36\00:24:27.40 there was little structure to work with. 00:24:27.43\00:24:29.83 There were no printing presses, 00:24:29.86\00:24:31.37 no publishing houses, and no organized conferences. 00:24:31.40\00:24:35.10 J.N. Andrews set about the work 00:24:35.14\00:24:36.94 with an intensity that he was known for. 00:24:36.97\00:24:39.54 J.N. Andrews and his children 00:24:45.11\00:24:46.92 quickly learned the French language, 00:24:46.95\00:24:48.85 making a family covenant 00:24:48.88\00:24:50.42 that they would not speak anything 00:24:50.45\00:24:52.09 to each other in the home, except French, 00:24:52.12\00:24:54.69 although German was acceptable at times. 00:24:54.72\00:24:58.23 His daughter, Mary, 00:24:58.26\00:24:59.59 quickly became fluent in the language 00:24:59.63\00:25:01.86 and became the proofreader for the new magazine entitled 00:25:01.90\00:25:05.27 "Les Signes des Temps." 00:25:05.30\00:25:07.24 J.N. Andrews wrote over 400 articles 00:25:07.27\00:25:09.94 for this magazine 00:25:09.97\00:25:11.37 during the seven year period that he was in Europe, 00:25:11.41\00:25:14.04 a remarkable amount considering 00:25:14.08\00:25:16.04 that he also contracted pneumonia 00:25:16.08\00:25:18.18 after being there just three years. 00:25:18.21\00:25:20.32 When the doctor came to visit him, 00:25:20.35\00:25:22.02 he asked him why he was starving himself 00:25:22.05\00:25:24.35 'cause he looked to be in such bad health. 00:25:24.39\00:25:26.19 Not wanting to overspend, 00:25:31.43\00:25:33.56 they lived mainly on white bread, 00:25:33.60\00:25:35.56 graham pudding, potatoes and sometimes cabbage, 00:25:35.60\00:25:39.20 with very little fruit, milk, or butter. 00:25:39.23\00:25:42.94 He was counseled to marry again 00:25:42.97\00:25:44.81 and it's likely this would have preserved his life 00:25:44.84\00:25:47.38 as it could have led to him taking better care of himself. 00:25:47.41\00:25:50.78 But he said he could not. 00:25:50.81\00:25:52.55 He was particularly heartbroken after the death of his daughter 00:25:52.58\00:25:56.22 and when he returned to Europe, 00:25:56.25\00:25:57.72 he was completely bedridden by 1883 with tuberculosis. 00:25:57.75\00:26:02.52 The church was concerned 00:26:02.56\00:26:03.89 and they sent J.N. Loughborough from England 00:26:03.93\00:26:06.13 to do an anointing service. 00:26:06.16\00:26:08.10 And his mother also visited him in his final months 00:26:08.13\00:26:11.47 but unfortunately, he still died young. 00:26:11.50\00:26:14.00 He charged that no eulogy should appear 00:26:20.58\00:26:23.04 in the Review and Herald 00:26:23.08\00:26:24.55 and while Uriah Smith wanted to publish one, 00:26:24.58\00:26:27.38 he complied with his request. 00:26:27.42\00:26:29.58 He was a pioneer, a dedicated worker 00:26:29.62\00:26:32.32 and one of the most intelligent and hardworking ministers 00:26:32.35\00:26:35.86 in the history of our church. 00:26:35.89\00:26:38.09 Whilst he received no eulogy after his death, 00:26:38.13\00:26:41.10 his legacy lived on in far more significant ways. 00:26:41.13\00:26:45.20 What kind of legacy are you building in your life? 00:26:45.23\00:26:48.64 If nothing was said publicly 00:26:48.67\00:26:50.51 or in written form after your death, 00:26:50.54\00:26:53.07 would the fruit of your life lead to positive change 00:26:53.11\00:26:56.28 in the life of other people? 00:26:56.31\00:26:58.41 May we make a commitment to leave such a legacy behind. 00:26:58.45\00:27:02.12
