Washington, New Hampshire 00:00:19.81\00:00:21.28 had been a bedrock of Sabbatarianism 00:00:21.32\00:00:23.65 in the late 1840s with Cyrus and William Farnsworth, 00:00:23.69\00:00:28.12 Frederick Wheeler, 00:00:28.16\00:00:29.49 and TM Preble all living nearby. 00:00:29.52\00:00:31.93 By the 1860s, though, spiritual decline had set in. 00:00:31.96\00:00:36.16 DM Canright and JN Andrews had worked in the area 00:00:36.20\00:00:40.77 with limited success, 00:00:40.80\00:00:42.40 and by 1867, the church had closed. 00:00:42.44\00:00:46.24 Frederick Wheeler had now moved to New York State. 00:00:46.27\00:00:49.78 There was a spirit of judgmentalism, bitterness, 00:00:49.81\00:00:52.78 and a general backsliding 00:00:52.81\00:00:54.55 that had set in amongst the members. 00:00:54.58\00:00:56.82 In 1867, 00:01:02.09\00:01:03.66 Ellen and James White came to the area 00:01:03.69\00:01:06.19 to conduct a revival series 00:01:06.23\00:01:07.96 and stayed in the home of Cyrus Farnsworth. 00:01:08.00\00:01:11.43 Over the course of several days, 00:01:11.47\00:01:13.20 they held nine meetings 00:01:13.23\00:01:15.30 but were met with little success. 00:01:15.34\00:01:17.47 It was difficult work. 00:01:17.51\00:01:19.41 Some of the success stories, though, 00:01:19.44\00:01:21.04 were the reconversion of Worcester Ball. 00:01:21.08\00:01:23.65 He had become a bitter antagonist 00:01:23.68\00:01:25.68 of Ellen White and was a prickly character 00:01:25.71\00:01:28.38 prone to critical comments. 00:01:28.42\00:01:30.32 But as Ellen faithfully and tenderly appealed to him, 00:01:30.35\00:01:33.82 he returned to the fold. 00:01:33.86\00:01:35.69 Another person in the community who was a pillar 00:01:40.96\00:01:43.57 was William Farnsworth, 00:01:43.60\00:01:45.23 but he had recently gone back to chewing tobacco 00:01:45.27\00:01:48.14 unbeknownst to anyone. 00:01:48.17\00:01:50.31 His friends and family had no idea 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.81 about this recent change, 00:01:52.84\00:01:54.38 but his son Eugene did know. 00:01:54.41\00:01:57.18 He had seen his father spitting in the snow 00:01:57.21\00:01:59.85 when they were out in the woods and covering it with his foot, 00:01:59.88\00:02:03.18 but he did not tell anyone and kept this to himself. 00:02:03.22\00:02:06.82 Eugene was a teenager, 00:02:11.99\00:02:13.76 and a visit about a year or so earlier 00:02:13.80\00:02:16.40 by JN Andrews had encouraged him 00:02:16.43\00:02:18.90 to question his purpose in life. 00:02:18.93\00:02:21.90 He was, however, unconvinced 00:02:21.94\00:02:23.87 of the prophetic gift of Ellen White, 00:02:23.91\00:02:26.14 but now that she was in town, 00:02:26.17\00:02:27.78 he had the perfect opportunity to test this out. 00:02:27.81\00:02:31.05 If Ellen White was truly a prophet, 00:02:31.08\00:02:33.28 then she would know 00:02:33.31\00:02:34.65 about his father's tobacco habit 00:02:34.68\00:02:36.35 which no one else except himself knew about. 00:02:36.38\00:02:39.49 As she was speaking personally to those present, 00:02:44.43\00:02:47.36 some words of rebuke, some encouragement, 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.96 she turned and looked at William Farnsworth 00:02:50.00\00:02:52.57 and gave a pointed testimony 00:02:52.60\00:02:54.24 about his use of both pork and tobacco 00:02:54.27\00:02:57.34 whilst appearing to be 00:02:57.37\00:02:58.71 a faithful defender of the faith. 00:02:58.74\00:03:01.24 She said he was a great hindrance 00:03:01.28\00:03:03.04 to the work in New Hampshire, 00:03:03.08\00:03:04.55 and he publicly repented of his sin 00:03:04.58\00:03:07.22 and turned his life around. 00:03:07.25\00:03:09.58 At those meetings, 00:03:09.62\00:03:10.99 18 young people 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.42 would give their lives to Jesus. 00:03:12.45\00:03:14.52 Nine of which would go on to be full-time workers 00:03:14.56\00:03:17.23 for the church, 00:03:17.26\00:03:18.59 one of which was Eugene Farnsworth, 00:03:18.63\00:03:20.53 making those meetings in Christmas 1867 00:03:20.56\00:03:24.23 a significant turning point in this area 00:03:24.27\00:03:27.40 and the lives of those present. 00:03:27.44\00:03:29.17 This story also illustrates the powerful impact 00:03:34.64\00:03:38.35 of the prophetic gift and while it was often used 00:03:38.38\00:03:41.25 for broad and far-reaching messages, 00:03:41.28\00:03:43.99 it was also personal in nature, 00:03:44.02\00:03:46.25 speaking to people's individual needs and issues. 00:03:46.29\00:03:50.23 William Farnsworth, 00:03:50.26\00:03:51.59 with his secret and private sin, 00:03:51.63\00:03:53.76 was a stumbling block to the progress of the work 00:03:53.80\00:03:56.40 in the town and a hindrance 00:03:56.43\00:03:58.33 to at least one of the young men 00:03:58.37\00:04:00.34 dedicating his life fully to God. 00:04:00.37\00:04:03.07 Maybe you are struggling with a secret or a private sin 00:04:03.10\00:04:06.27 that no one else knows about. 00:04:06.31\00:04:08.21 Surrender it to God, dedicate your life to Him, 00:04:08.24\00:04:11.51 and allow His power to rule in your life. 00:04:11.55\00:04:14.78 In the 1850s, Rochester, New York 00:04:42.08\00:04:44.58 was a relatively new town with lots of new industries 00:04:44.61\00:04:47.98 and people moving in. 00:04:48.02\00:04:49.98 The early Advent believers would settle here 00:04:50.02\00:04:52.49 for a few years in a sort of youth commune. 00:04:52.52\00:04:56.06 A house was procured for the rent of $175 a year 00:04:56.09\00:05:00.60 on what is now 491 Mount Hope Avenue. 00:05:00.63\00:05:04.70 The Whites would live here for 3.5 years, 00:05:04.73\00:05:07.17 from the spring of 1852 to the autumn of 1855. 00:05:07.20\00:05:12.41 The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald 00:05:12.44\00:05:14.74 which had begun in Paris Hill, Maine 00:05:14.78\00:05:16.88 before moving to Saratoga Springs, New York, 00:05:16.91\00:05:19.71 would now spend a few years here 00:05:19.75\00:05:21.88 in Rochester, New York. 00:05:21.92\00:05:23.59 It was here in Rochester, New York 00:05:29.92\00:05:32.26 that the Adventists would purchase 00:05:32.29\00:05:34.00 their first printing press, 00:05:34.03\00:05:35.80 an original Washington hand press. 00:05:35.83\00:05:38.63 For the first time the Review and Herald 00:05:38.67\00:05:41.07 would be printed on an Adventist-owned press, 00:05:41.10\00:05:43.84 operated by Sabbath-keeping Adventist workers. 00:05:43.87\00:05:47.34 It would continue here until October 30, 1855 00:05:47.38\00:05:52.01 when it would move to Battle Creek, Michigan. 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.45 The years here in Rochester, though, 00:05:54.48\00:05:56.45 were filled with sacrifice and dedication. 00:05:56.48\00:05:59.72 The house would have stood right here 00:06:04.89\00:06:07.06 near this spot on Mount Hope Avenue, 00:06:07.10\00:06:09.43 and it was furnished with 2 old bedsteads 00:06:09.46\00:06:12.40 for 25 cents, 6 chairs for a dollar, 00:06:12.43\00:06:16.07 and 4 more chairs with no seating for 62 cents. 00:06:16.10\00:06:20.41 They could not afford potatoes, 00:06:20.44\00:06:22.28 so they ate turnips instead, butter was expensive, 00:06:22.31\00:06:25.88 and so they used fruit sauce, 00:06:25.91\00:06:27.52 and beans were a regular part of their diet. 00:06:27.55\00:06:30.85 The workers, mainly in their teens and 20s, 00:06:30.89\00:06:34.22 worked for little more than their room, 00:06:34.26\00:06:36.76 their food, and their clothing. 00:06:36.79\00:06:38.83 And about 12 of them at any one time 00:06:38.86\00:06:41.36 would live in the White's home along with the printing press. 00:06:41.40\00:06:45.37 Working long hours into the evening, 00:06:45.40\00:06:48.17 often till midnight and sometimes 00:06:48.20\00:06:50.71 all through the night, 00:06:50.74\00:06:52.07 they cheerfully set about their task 00:06:52.11\00:06:54.34 of spreading the message via publications. 00:06:54.38\00:06:57.51 Uriah Smith, who turned down a lucrative job offer 00:07:04.65\00:07:08.42 to come and work for his room and board, 00:07:08.46\00:07:10.43 had been living here a few weeks 00:07:10.46\00:07:12.09 when he commented that he had no objection 00:07:12.13\00:07:14.56 to eating beans 365 times in succession, 00:07:14.60\00:07:18.97 yet when it came time to making them 00:07:19.00\00:07:20.84 a regular part of his diet, he should protest. 00:07:20.87\00:07:24.24 Other individuals such as George Amadon, 00:07:24.27\00:07:26.91 Warren Bachelor, Annie Smith, JN Loughborough, JN Andrews, 00:07:26.94\00:07:31.98 Nathaniel White, and Annie White 00:07:32.01\00:07:34.12 all passed by here in the mid 1850s. 00:07:34.15\00:07:37.79 Many would die early deaths. 00:07:37.82\00:07:40.22 Here the workers labored faithfully 00:07:46.49\00:07:48.56 without all the tools 00:07:48.60\00:07:49.93 that would have made their work easier. 00:07:49.96\00:07:51.63 When the first books were printed, 00:07:51.67\00:07:53.64 they used a shoemaker's awl to perforate the backs. 00:07:53.67\00:07:57.21 The sisters then used a needle and thread 00:07:57.24\00:07:59.84 to stitch the books together, 00:07:59.87\00:08:01.51 and then a straight edge and penknife 00:08:01.54\00:08:03.55 were used the trim and cut the edges. 00:08:03.58\00:08:06.45 There was no folding machine, 00:08:06.48\00:08:08.32 and this had to be done by hand as well. 00:08:08.35\00:08:11.29 The covers were then pasted on 00:08:11.32\00:08:13.36 before they were wrapped and packed and sent out. 00:08:13.39\00:08:16.56 Today for many of us we live a life of plenty, 00:08:24.37\00:08:27.27 far removed 00:08:27.30\00:08:28.64 from these early humble beginnings. 00:08:28.67\00:08:30.54 The work that began in sacrifice 00:08:30.57\00:08:32.74 will end also in sacrifice, 00:08:32.77\00:08:34.84 and whilst the exact nature of that sacrifice 00:08:34.88\00:08:37.48 may look different today, 00:08:37.51\00:08:39.15 the general principles of dedication to duty 00:08:39.18\00:08:42.22 and commitment to the cause remain. 00:08:42.25\00:08:44.62 Today we have perhaps more resources 00:08:44.65\00:08:46.82 than at any other time in history 00:08:46.86\00:08:49.09 and access to information and technology 00:08:49.12\00:08:51.93 that we did not have in years gone by 00:08:51.96\00:08:54.26 that make the spread of the gospel much easier. 00:08:54.30\00:08:57.40 Let us not act lethargically, 00:08:57.43\00:08:59.63 but may the energy and enthusiasm 00:08:59.67\00:09:01.87 of these past pioneers motivate and inspire us today. 00:09:01.90\00:09:06.27 Her brother is far better known, 00:09:46.25\00:09:48.52 his books widely circulated, 00:09:48.55\00:09:51.02 and although fewer people know her name, Annie Smith 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.56 made a significant contribution in the early days of Adventism. 00:09:54.59\00:09:59.19 She was a gifted writer, poet, and editor, 00:09:59.23\00:10:02.96 and 10 of her hymns appeared in the 1941 edition 00:10:03.00\00:10:07.20 of the "Church Hymnal" and 4 in the current edition today. 00:10:07.24\00:10:11.57 She was born into a family with three other brothers 00:10:11.61\00:10:15.28 here in West Wilton 00:10:15.31\00:10:16.68 in this house today named the Smith Tavern. 00:10:16.71\00:10:20.15 It would also be the home 00:10:20.18\00:10:21.72 that she would unfortunately die in 00:10:21.75\00:10:23.59 at the age of 27. 00:10:23.62\00:10:25.75 Annie gave her life to Jesus 00:10:33.70\00:10:35.56 at the tender age of 10 00:10:35.60\00:10:37.20 in anticipation of His soon return. 00:10:37.23\00:10:40.00 Yet when the Great Disappointment happened, 00:10:40.04\00:10:42.10 she, along with her brother Uriah, 00:10:42.14\00:10:44.41 gave up hope in His soon return 00:10:44.44\00:10:46.54 and they both went back to their studies. 00:10:46.57\00:10:48.81 Annie was intellectually gifted, 00:10:48.84\00:10:51.25 and received a place 00:10:51.28\00:10:52.61 at the Charlestown Female Seminary 00:10:52.65\00:10:54.82 here in Boston where she spent several years. 00:10:54.85\00:10:58.35 Her mother Rebeckah was still a believer, 00:10:58.39\00:11:01.42 and one day Joseph Bates came to town 00:11:01.46\00:11:03.89 and mentioned that he would be in her area. 00:11:03.93\00:11:07.20 Her mother wrote to Annie, 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.16 asking her if she would attend the meetings. 00:11:09.20\00:11:11.87 She wasn't really interested, 00:11:11.90\00:11:13.37 but out of a sense of duty and obligation, 00:11:13.40\00:11:16.47 she agreed to go. 00:11:16.50\00:11:18.34 After she went to the meetings, at the end of it, 00:11:18.37\00:11:21.01 Joseph Bates asked her 00:11:21.04\00:11:22.81 if she wanted to have Bible studies, 00:11:22.84\00:11:24.91 which she agreed to. 00:11:24.95\00:11:26.61 At the end of three years study, 00:11:26.65\00:11:28.98 she accepted the Advent message again, 00:11:29.02\00:11:31.59 the Sabbath, and all its teachings. 00:11:31.62\00:11:34.19 At the time, Annie had a lucrative job offer 00:11:42.40\00:11:45.67 to work as a teacher for $1000 a year, 00:11:45.70\00:11:49.24 an extraordinary amount at the time, 00:11:49.27\00:11:51.97 though she had not accepted it. 00:11:52.01\00:11:54.04 Another opportunity arose to work at the newly-relocated 00:11:54.08\00:11:57.98 Review and Herald office in Rochester, New York. 00:11:58.01\00:12:01.62 As she weighed up the two offers, 00:12:01.65\00:12:03.22 with financial gain in the one job 00:12:03.25\00:12:05.75 versus little more than room and board in the other, 00:12:05.79\00:12:09.42 she chose the latter. 00:12:09.46\00:12:11.33 Here in Rochester, 00:12:20.14\00:12:21.47 she worked diligently and soon proved herself 00:12:21.50\00:12:24.37 as a capable hand in the office. 00:12:24.41\00:12:26.41 She worked as a copy editor 00:12:26.44\00:12:28.54 but also at times she was the acting editor. 00:12:28.58\00:12:31.75 With James White away often, 00:12:31.78\00:12:33.82 she would sometimes fill in for him, 00:12:33.85\00:12:35.85 remarkable considering her young age, 00:12:35.88\00:12:38.39 and would ensure that the magazine 00:12:38.42\00:12:40.19 could now have a regular publishing schedule. 00:12:40.22\00:12:43.16 Previously, with James White's busy speaking itinerary, 00:12:43.19\00:12:47.20 the magazine wasn't always so regular and consistent 00:12:47.23\00:12:50.47 in its distribution, but now with Annie there, 00:12:50.50\00:12:53.54 things changed for the better. 00:12:53.57\00:12:55.27 Annie had been working at the Review just over a year 00:13:03.45\00:13:06.98 when James White's brother and sister 00:13:07.02\00:13:09.52 Nathaniel and Anna arrived, 00:13:09.55\00:13:11.52 both suffering from tuberculosis. 00:13:11.55\00:13:14.26 Maybe due to the close proximity 00:13:14.29\00:13:16.69 that they were living in, 00:13:16.73\00:13:18.06 Annie contracted the disease 00:13:18.09\00:13:19.83 and went home to live with her mother 00:13:19.86\00:13:22.10 in November of 1854. 00:13:22.13\00:13:25.07 All the treatments that she tried didn't work. 00:13:25.10\00:13:28.17 Ellen White sent $75 of her own money to help, 00:13:28.20\00:13:32.14 but nothing seemed to work. 00:13:32.17\00:13:34.94 Annie finished this book of poems here 00:13:34.98\00:13:37.75 entitled "Home Here and Home in Heaven" 00:13:37.78\00:13:41.18 10 days before she died. 00:13:41.22\00:13:43.55 The last poem she wrote reads, 00:13:43.59\00:13:45.82 "Oh! Shed not a tear over the spot where I sleep, 00:13:45.85\00:13:49.52 for the living and not the dead ye may weep. 00:13:49.56\00:13:52.76 Why mourn for the weary who sweetly repose, 00:13:52.79\00:13:56.20 free in the grave from life's burdens and woes." 00:13:56.23\00:14:00.20 Annie lived a life of sacrifice, 00:14:00.24\00:14:02.90 dedication, and commitment. 00:14:02.94\00:14:05.11 She gave up a prosperous career to work for the church 00:14:05.14\00:14:09.04 in return for very little financial gain. 00:14:09.08\00:14:12.55 It was the sacrifice of mainly young people like this 00:14:12.58\00:14:16.28 in the early days of our church 00:14:16.32\00:14:18.45 that caused it to grow so remarkably, 00:14:18.49\00:14:21.46 and it will be a similar sacrifice 00:14:21.49\00:14:23.43 by God's people at the end of time 00:14:23.46\00:14:25.99 that will bring this work to a close. 00:14:26.03\00:14:28.56 When I was growing up, if you wanted to study history 00:14:31.07\00:14:33.50 or do research on a particular topic, 00:14:33.54\00:14:35.70 there was really only one option that we had, 00:14:35.74\00:14:38.24 and that was to read a book. 00:14:38.27\00:14:40.01 And I never really used to like reading that much. 00:14:40.04\00:14:42.21 So we decided to create a resource 00:14:42.24\00:14:44.05 that will translate this written information 00:14:44.08\00:14:46.31 into the language of today. 00:14:46.35\00:14:50.22 My name is Adam Ramdin. 00:14:50.25\00:14:51.59 And my name is Clive Coutet. 00:14:51.62\00:14:52.95 And we are the co-founders of Lineage Journey. 00:14:52.99\00:14:55.79 Back in 2016, I was reading "The Great Controversy" 00:14:55.82\00:14:58.29 and I was really struggling to find 00:14:58.33\00:14:59.73 any relevant video resources 00:14:59.76\00:15:01.43 that I could use to aid me in my study. 00:15:01.46\00:15:03.43 So I decided to approach Adam about the possibility 00:15:03.47\00:15:05.60 of making some videos on the Reformation. 00:15:05.63\00:15:08.20 So we started filming in the end of 2016. 00:15:08.24\00:15:11.21 And in 2017, 00:15:11.24\00:15:12.67 we released 48 videos 00:15:12.71\00:15:14.74 that covered the period of the early church 00:15:14.78\00:15:17.15 all the way through to the end of the Reformation. 00:15:17.18\00:15:20.32 Then in 2018 and 2019, 00:15:20.35\00:15:22.38 we released another 52 episodes on church history. 00:15:22.42\00:15:26.09 These have now been viewed all over the world 00:15:26.12\00:15:28.66 in over 100 countries 00:15:28.69\00:15:30.29 covering about 50 different languages, 00:15:30.33\00:15:32.53 and we have over 3 million views online. 00:15:32.56\00:15:35.83 These videos have been used as a resource 00:15:35.86\00:15:37.97 in both secular and Christian schools 00:15:38.00\00:15:40.44 as well as several church denominations across the globe, 00:15:40.47\00:15:43.81 using Bible studies, study groups, 00:15:43.84\00:15:46.37 as well as play to the general congregation. 00:15:46.41\00:15:48.48 They also make a great online evangelistic tool 00:15:48.51\00:15:51.31 where people are able to share them 00:15:51.35\00:15:52.78 and we've seen them go into countries 00:15:52.81\00:15:54.25 that we our self can't go, 00:15:54.28\00:15:55.68 countries that are Muslim, 00:15:55.72\00:15:57.05 countries where the Christian message 00:15:57.09\00:15:58.55 cannot go. 00:15:58.59\00:15:59.92 One of the challenges we have, though, 00:15:59.95\00:16:01.69 is that amongst our team of almost 10 people, 00:16:01.72\00:16:03.76 we are all volunteers on this project 00:16:03.79\00:16:05.79 sacrificing our time, 00:16:05.83\00:16:07.16 our effort and energy in order to make 00:16:07.20\00:16:08.83 these resources together. 00:16:08.86\00:16:10.73 Just to put things into perspective, 00:16:10.77\00:16:12.57 each Lineage episode as well as the filming 00:16:12.60\00:16:15.24 takes an additional 00:16:15.27\00:16:16.60 two to three days in post production. 00:16:16.64\00:16:18.37 That is a lot of time and sacrifice 00:16:18.41\00:16:20.48 that this team has made 00:16:20.51\00:16:21.84 in putting 100 episodes together. 00:16:21.88\00:16:23.61 So we need to raise the funds 00:16:23.65\00:16:25.05 to cover the cost of the filming 00:16:25.08\00:16:26.88 as well as the continued production costs 00:16:26.92\00:16:29.58 that come after that. 00:16:29.62\00:16:31.05 So for as little as $1 a month, 00:16:31.09\00:16:33.05 you can help us to expand this ministry 00:16:33.09\00:16:35.26 to create new resources 00:16:35.29\00:16:36.79 to reach more people across the world. 00:16:36.83\00:16:39.26 Thank you for visiting this page 00:16:39.29\00:16:40.86 and taking the time to watch this video. 00:16:40.90\00:16:43.06 We really appreciate that. 00:16:43.10\00:16:44.53 Thank you for your support of the ministry so far, 00:16:44.57\00:16:47.10 and we ask that you would prayerfully consider 00:16:47.14\00:16:49.27 being a partner with us on this Patreon page. 00:16:49.30\00:16:52.84 May God bless you and we ask 00:16:52.87\00:16:54.44 that you continue to keep this ministry 00:16:54.48\00:16:56.54 and our future plans in prayer. 00:16:56.58\00:16:58.55 West Wilton, New Hampshire, here in this house, 00:17:16.67\00:17:19.97 a giant of the faith was born. 00:17:20.00\00:17:22.07 His name is Uriah Smith. 00:17:22.10\00:17:24.64 At a young age, 00:17:24.67\00:17:26.01 he developed an infection in his left leg 00:17:26.04\00:17:28.08 and unfortunately at the age of 12, 00:17:28.11\00:17:30.58 he had to have it amputated just above the knee. 00:17:30.61\00:17:34.12 This took place 00:17:34.15\00:17:35.48 just up the road on the kitchen table. 00:17:35.52\00:17:37.95 It lasted 20 minutes and no anesthesia was used. 00:17:37.99\00:17:42.09 Like his sister, 00:17:42.12\00:17:43.46 he was gifted with a brilliant mind 00:17:43.49\00:17:45.66 and attended Phillips Academy in Exeter, 00:17:45.69\00:17:48.60 one of the foremost schools of his day. 00:17:48.63\00:17:51.67 When his father died suddenly, 00:17:51.70\00:17:53.70 it caused him to think about his own spiritual life 00:17:53.74\00:17:56.74 and study thoroughly the Adventist message 00:17:56.77\00:17:59.71 after having lost his zeal 00:17:59.74\00:18:01.54 after the disappointment of 1844. 00:18:01.58\00:18:04.58 He went to hear James and Ellen speak 00:18:10.89\00:18:13.25 in Washington, New Hampshire for the first time 00:18:13.29\00:18:15.69 and was impressed by the explanation given 00:18:15.72\00:18:18.29 for the Great Disappointment. 00:18:18.33\00:18:20.23 He went home and studied his Bible 00:18:20.26\00:18:22.23 for three months before making a commitment 00:18:22.26\00:18:24.93 to renew his faith and rejoin the believers. 00:18:24.97\00:18:28.34 Soon after, he turned down a lucrative job offer 00:18:28.37\00:18:32.04 and moved here to Rochester, New York 00:18:32.07\00:18:34.64 to work for the newly relocated Review and Herald offices. 00:18:34.68\00:18:38.91 He was 21 years old at the time, 00:18:38.95\00:18:41.42 and would go on to work for the Review and Herald 00:18:41.45\00:18:43.82 for 50 more years. 00:18:43.85\00:18:45.42 At the age of 23 when it moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, 00:18:45.45\00:18:49.39 he became the resident editor. 00:18:49.42\00:18:51.53 The importance of the printed word 00:18:57.60\00:18:59.87 at this time of history cannot be overstated. 00:18:59.90\00:19:03.37 The churches that were scattered 00:19:03.41\00:19:04.81 around the country would only hear 00:19:04.84\00:19:06.91 from the travelling itinerant speakers 00:19:06.94\00:19:08.98 what was happening elsewhere every several weeks. 00:19:09.01\00:19:12.11 Uriah Smith, as the resident editor-in-chief 00:19:12.15\00:19:15.12 of the Review and Herald, 00:19:15.15\00:19:16.52 was like the pastor of the whole church, 00:19:16.55\00:19:18.79 as people would read his editorials 00:19:18.82\00:19:20.92 and find out the news 00:19:20.96\00:19:22.29 of what was happening elsewhere, 00:19:22.32\00:19:23.66 such as who had died. 00:19:23.69\00:19:25.29 The Adventist Review was like the glue 00:19:25.33\00:19:28.03 that kept the early church together. 00:19:28.06\00:19:30.27 However, he was more than an editor and preacher. 00:19:35.94\00:19:39.11 Uriah Smith had 8 patents during his life, 00:19:39.14\00:19:42.14 one of which was a school desk that earned him $3,000. 00:19:42.18\00:19:46.58 He also patented a significantly 00:19:46.61\00:19:48.75 improved version of the prosthetic leg. 00:19:48.78\00:19:52.05 He was also a prolific writer, 00:19:52.09\00:19:54.06 completing 18 books during his lifetime, 00:19:54.09\00:19:57.03 the most famous and well-read being 00:19:57.06\00:19:59.23 "Thoughts on Daniel and Revelation." 00:19:59.26\00:20:01.76 In 1903, 00:20:07.80\00:20:09.50 tragedy would strike the Review and Herald 00:20:09.54\00:20:12.27 as it was burned down. 00:20:12.31\00:20:13.98 The insurance only covered a fraction, 00:20:14.01\00:20:16.58 and instead of rebuilding here in Battle Creek, 00:20:16.61\00:20:19.61 the decision was made to relocate to Washington, DC. 00:20:19.65\00:20:23.89 Uriah Smith, writing shortly after this tragedy, said, 00:20:23.92\00:20:27.72 "In the shadow of great calamity, 00:20:27.76\00:20:30.13 we are of good courage." 00:20:30.16\00:20:32.23 The Review and Herald under Uriah Smith's leadership 00:20:32.26\00:20:35.26 had gone from a small Washington hand press 00:20:35.30\00:20:37.83 to having hundreds of employees 00:20:37.87\00:20:39.80 using the best equipment and printing in six languages. 00:20:39.83\00:20:43.94 On the March 6, 1903, 00:20:50.18\00:20:53.05 he was walking to work here in Battle Creek 00:20:53.08\00:20:56.08 when he suddenly collapsed. 00:20:56.12\00:20:57.75 He was rushed to be seen by a doctor, 00:20:57.79\00:20:59.92 but unfortunately he died a few hours later 00:20:59.95\00:21:02.72 from a large stroke. 00:21:02.76\00:21:04.66 A special issue of the Review and Herald 00:21:04.69\00:21:07.16 was published with his picture on the front 00:21:07.20\00:21:09.73 as well as a poem by his late sister Annie 00:21:09.76\00:21:12.87 that she had written years previously about himself. 00:21:12.90\00:21:16.14 He was also a hymn writer and his most famous hymn 00:21:21.74\00:21:25.01 rings with words that echo to our time today. 00:21:25.05\00:21:28.48 "O brother, be faithful! 00:21:28.52\00:21:30.12 Soon Jesus will come, 00:21:30.15\00:21:31.75 for whom we have waited so long. 00:21:31.79\00:21:34.42 O, soon shall we enter our glorious home, 00:21:34.46\00:21:37.69 and join in the conqueror's song. 00:21:37.73\00:21:40.20 O brother, be faithful! 00:21:40.23\00:21:41.76 For why should we prove unfaithful to Him 00:21:41.80\00:21:44.70 who has shown such deep, 00:21:44.73\00:21:46.57 such unbounded and infinite love, 00:21:46.60\00:21:49.40 who died to redeem us His own." 00:21:49.44\00:21:52.41 There is one book 00:22:30.28\00:22:31.61 that almost cost Ellen White her life, 00:22:31.65\00:22:33.92 and that book today is entitled "The Great Controversy". 00:22:33.95\00:22:37.89 The origins of this book come to this rural area here, 00:22:37.92\00:22:41.92 just outside the town of Bowling Green 00:22:41.96\00:22:44.59 in the state of Ohio. 00:22:44.63\00:22:46.16 Ellen and James White had been traveling across the state 00:22:46.19\00:22:49.03 visiting various families, 00:22:49.06\00:22:50.77 and they were in this area 00:22:50.80\00:22:52.30 for the funeral of a young child. 00:22:52.33\00:22:54.67 The funeral took place on March 14, 1858 00:22:54.70\00:22:58.61 in the Lovett's Grove schoolhouse, 00:22:58.64\00:23:00.41 which would have been located just across the road from here. 00:23:00.44\00:23:03.85 During the funeral sermon, 00:23:03.88\00:23:06.11 Ellen White received a vision that lasted two hours. 00:23:06.15\00:23:10.45 Receiving a vision during the funeral 00:23:10.49\00:23:12.85 of a grieving young family is not the ideal timing, 00:23:12.89\00:23:16.73 but the truth that this vision would share 00:23:16.76\00:23:18.89 would be vitally important to us today. 00:23:18.93\00:23:21.90 The following day James and Ellen 00:23:28.20\00:23:30.07 were traveling home by train 00:23:30.11\00:23:31.87 and she relayed to him what she had seen 00:23:31.91\00:23:34.31 and they discussed plans for writing out the vision. 00:23:34.34\00:23:37.58 It was decided that when they reached home 00:23:37.61\00:23:39.95 this would be her first work. 00:23:39.98\00:23:42.38 Yet on that train, 00:23:42.42\00:23:43.75 there was what one author has described as an unseen, 00:23:43.79\00:23:47.19 unpaying passenger who was determined 00:23:47.22\00:23:50.29 that the world should never know 00:23:50.33\00:23:51.73 the truth about himself 00:23:51.76\00:23:53.29 that it should not get published 00:23:53.33\00:23:54.83 and see the light of day. 00:23:54.86\00:23:56.67 Arriving in Jackson, Michigan, 00:23:56.70\00:23:59.13 they went to the home of Dan Palmer 00:23:59.17\00:24:01.24 and as Ellen White was conversing 00:24:01.27\00:24:03.10 With sister Palmer, she suffered a cold, 00:24:03.14\00:24:05.84 strange sensation 00:24:05.87\00:24:07.84 pass over her right side and heart. 00:24:07.88\00:24:10.91 Those present earnestly prayed for her, 00:24:16.42\00:24:19.15 and with a partially restored strength, 00:24:19.19\00:24:21.19 she was able to continue her journey 00:24:21.22\00:24:23.29 here to Battle Creek. 00:24:23.32\00:24:25.03 Arriving back here in this house, 00:24:25.06\00:24:27.66 she began to write, but it wasn't easy. 00:24:27.70\00:24:30.40 Initially she only had enough strength 00:24:30.43\00:24:32.60 to write barely one page 00:24:32.63\00:24:34.64 and then she had to rest for three days afterwards. 00:24:34.67\00:24:37.87 But as she continued to write and her strength increased, 00:24:37.91\00:24:41.08 she was able to progress and finish the book. 00:24:41.11\00:24:44.81 In June of that year she received some light 00:24:44.85\00:24:48.18 as to what happened in Dan Palmer's home, 00:24:48.22\00:24:51.05 and she wrote, 00:24:51.09\00:24:52.42 "I was shown in vision that in the attack at Jackson, 00:24:52.45\00:24:55.62 Satan had intended to take my life, 00:24:55.66\00:24:58.59 in order to hinder the work that I was about to write. 00:24:58.63\00:25:02.13 But angels of God were sent to my rescue." 00:25:02.16\00:25:05.90 The unseen, 00:25:05.93\00:25:07.27 unpaying passenger on that train 00:25:07.30\00:25:10.01 did not want the world to know 00:25:10.04\00:25:11.97 that he had been an angel in heaven, 00:25:12.01\00:25:14.08 that he had fallen into sin, 00:25:14.11\00:25:15.94 and that he was the cause of the misery in this world. 00:25:15.98\00:25:19.68 The first published account of this vision 00:25:25.69\00:25:28.32 would be this book, right here, 00:25:28.36\00:25:30.06 the 1858 edition of "Spiritual Gifts, Volume 1." 00:25:30.09\00:25:34.90 This would later be enlarged into the "Spirit of Prophecy," 00:25:34.93\00:25:38.10 volumes One to Four, 00:25:38.13\00:25:39.60 and then eventually to what we have today, 00:25:39.63\00:25:41.80 a five-part series entitled the "Conflict of the Ages," 00:25:41.84\00:25:46.04 of which the book "Great Controversy" 00:25:46.07\00:25:48.14 is the last in the series. 00:25:48.18\00:25:50.01 The Great Controversy between Christ and Satan 00:25:50.05\00:25:53.11 would be a major theme in the writings of Ellen White, 00:25:53.15\00:25:56.48 and also the motif 00:25:56.52\00:25:58.22 by which Seventh-day Adventists would understand 00:25:58.25\00:26:00.72 as key to unlocking Scripture. 00:26:00.76\00:26:03.09 This book, 00:26:07.90\00:26:09.23 the one that almost cost Ellen White her life, 00:26:09.26\00:26:11.50 has changed lives all around the world 00:26:11.53\00:26:14.84 and is the one that we should seek to share 00:26:14.87\00:26:17.07 as much as possible. 00:26:17.11\00:26:18.51 Ellen White herself said, 00:26:18.54\00:26:20.28 "'The Great Controversy' 00:26:20.31\00:26:21.74 should be very widely circulated. 00:26:21.78\00:26:24.28 It contains the story of the past, 00:26:24.31\00:26:26.95 the present, and the future. 00:26:26.98\00:26:28.72 In its outline of the closing scenes 00:26:28.75\00:26:31.29 of this Earth's history, 00:26:31.32\00:26:32.92 it bears a powerful testimony in behalf of the truth. 00:26:32.95\00:26:36.96 I am more anxious to see a wide circulation 00:26:36.99\00:26:40.13 for this book than for any others 00:26:40.16\00:26:42.53 that I have written, 00:26:42.56\00:26:43.90 for in 'The Great Controversy,' 00:26:43.93\00:26:45.33 the closing scenes of this world's history 00:26:45.37\00:26:48.07 are given more distinctly than in any of my other books." 00:26:48.10\00:26:52.57 If you have never read the book "The Great Controversy", 00:26:52.61\00:26:55.31 then I would invite you to do so, and if you have, 00:26:55.34\00:26:58.18 then pray and ask God for wisdom 00:26:58.21\00:27:00.32 on who to share copy with. 00:27:00.35\00:27:02.48
