In the vicinity of Washington, New Hampshire 00:00:20.22\00:00:22.85 there were two other men along with Frederick Wheeler 00:00:22.88\00:00:25.82 who were instrumental 00:00:25.85\00:00:27.19 in the history of the Sabbath, 00:00:27.22\00:00:29.22 T. M. Preble and Cyrus Farnsworth. 00:00:29.26\00:00:32.46 T. M. Preble wrote a track 00:00:32.49\00:00:34.33 entitled tract showing that the Seventh-day 00:00:34.36\00:00:37.40 should be observed as a Sabbath. 00:00:37.43\00:00:39.43 This tract was very influential 00:00:39.47\00:00:41.64 for it found its way to Paris Hill Maine 00:00:41.67\00:00:43.97 and also to the home of Joseph Bates. 00:00:44.01\00:00:47.24 Bates read it and was convinced of it, 00:00:47.28\00:00:49.81 but wanted to investigate further. 00:00:49.84\00:00:52.98 Joseph Bates heard about a group of Sabbath keepers 00:00:57.62\00:01:00.52 in Washington, New Hampshire and before making 00:01:00.56\00:01:03.53 any major changes he decided to visit, 00:01:03.56\00:01:06.83 he traveled by train and stagecoach 00:01:06.86\00:01:09.26 to the town of Hillsboro where Frederick Wheeler lived. 00:01:09.30\00:01:13.03 Despite arriving at 10 pm, 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.40 he was invited in and said that he wanted 00:01:15.44\00:01:17.97 to look at every argument 00:01:18.01\00:01:19.47 in the Bible in favor of the Sabbath. 00:01:19.51\00:01:22.54 That night the two men studied together 00:01:22.58\00:01:24.98 and talked until the morning. 00:01:25.01\00:01:27.32 Joseph Bates took notes and in the morning 00:01:27.35\00:01:30.39 they both knelt to pray and committed their lives 00:01:30.42\00:01:33.49 to preaching on the Sabbath truth. 00:01:33.52\00:01:36.19 The next day the two men traveled 12 miles 00:01:41.70\00:01:44.83 to the home of Cyrus Farnsworth. 00:01:44.87\00:01:47.20 There on a warm day in the front garden 00:01:47.24\00:01:50.14 under the maple trees, Frederick Wheeler 00:01:50.17\00:01:52.61 and Cyrus Farnsworth continued Joseph Bates' 00:01:52.64\00:01:55.84 crash course on the Sabbath. 00:01:55.88\00:01:58.11 Along with T. M. Preble's tract on the Sabbath, 00:01:58.15\00:02:00.95 Bates was now fully convinced. 00:02:00.98\00:02:03.52 He bade his farewells 00:02:03.55\00:02:05.09 and started his three-day journey home 00:02:05.12\00:02:07.72 with a lot to think about. 00:02:07.76\00:02:09.29 Arriving back in Fairhaven, 00:02:15.53\00:02:17.50 he was walking home from the train depot 00:02:17.53\00:02:19.97 when he met his neighbor, James Madison Monroe Hall 00:02:20.00\00:02:23.87 as he was crossing the bridge from New Bedford to Fairhaven. 00:02:23.91\00:02:27.51 Bates was greeted 00:02:27.54\00:02:28.88 with the question what's the news, 00:02:28.91\00:02:30.85 Captain Bates, to which he responded, 00:02:30.88\00:02:33.38 the news is that the seventh day is the Sabbath. 00:02:33.42\00:02:37.25 After a short conversation, Bates arranged to meet 00:02:37.29\00:02:40.59 with Mr. Hall and the other Advent believers 00:02:40.62\00:02:43.16 to study this subject out. 00:02:43.19\00:02:45.49 By the next Sabbath, Mr. Hall was a Sabbath keeper 00:02:45.53\00:02:48.73 and his wife the week after. 00:02:48.76\00:02:51.27 Bates would be instrumental 00:02:51.30\00:02:53.10 in the adoption of the Sabbath by the disappointed Adventist. 00:02:53.13\00:02:57.27 He had a special burden to teach on this subject 00:02:57.31\00:03:00.28 and the tracts he wrote 00:03:00.31\00:03:01.68 would be instrumental in convincing many people, 00:03:01.71\00:03:04.78 in particular James and Ellen White. 00:03:04.81\00:03:08.42 Joseph Bates was at home writing 00:03:14.36\00:03:16.49 when his wife came in and said she needed 00:03:16.52\00:03:18.39 some more flour to finish the baking. 00:03:18.43\00:03:21.13 He went down to the shop 00:03:21.16\00:03:22.70 and used all the last money that he had 00:03:22.73\00:03:25.17 to buy four pounds of flour. 00:03:25.20\00:03:27.64 His wife Prudence was very upset, 00:03:27.67\00:03:30.21 firstly, that he had used all the money 00:03:30.24\00:03:32.27 that they had and secondly, 00:03:32.31\00:03:34.44 that he only had enough to buy four pounds of flour. 00:03:34.48\00:03:38.15 She asked him, "What he was going to do?" 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.42 To which he responded, 00:03:40.45\00:03:41.88 he was going to write a book on the Sabbath 00:03:41.92\00:03:44.09 and spread it to the world. 00:03:44.12\00:03:46.35 About half an hour later, 00:03:46.39\00:03:48.12 he was impressed to go to the post office 00:03:48.16\00:03:50.26 and when he arrived, there was a letter for him. 00:03:50.29\00:03:52.76 He didn't have enough money to even pay for the postage, 00:03:52.79\00:03:56.03 but asked the postmaster if he would open it. 00:03:56.06\00:03:58.93 When he did, 00:03:58.97\00:04:00.30 he found there was a $10 bill inside 00:04:00.34\00:04:03.00 and he used this money to buy 00:04:03.04\00:04:04.61 a more generous supply of groceries 00:04:04.64\00:04:06.84 and also to arrange 00:04:06.88\00:04:08.78 for the printing of his next tract. 00:04:08.81\00:04:11.35 Within a few years this truth on the Sabbath 00:04:18.95\00:04:21.32 will grow remarkably. 00:04:21.36\00:04:23.16 In 1848, there were six major conferences 00:04:23.19\00:04:26.83 on the Sabbath with Bates presenting 00:04:26.86\00:04:29.06 at most of them. 00:04:29.10\00:04:30.43 After the great disappointment of 1844 00:04:30.47\00:04:33.37 and the scattering 00:04:33.40\00:04:34.80 that the various wins of doctrine 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.84 would cause after this, 00:04:36.87\00:04:38.34 God was using this truth to gather His people around. 00:04:38.37\00:04:42.58 Proverbs 4:18 says, 00:04:42.61\00:04:44.95 "That the path of the just is as a shining light 00:04:44.98\00:04:48.25 that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day." 00:04:48.28\00:04:51.75 God was slowly leading His people back 00:04:51.79\00:04:54.49 to a full understanding of His Word. 00:04:54.52\00:04:57.29 May we follow God as He leads us day by day 00:04:57.33\00:05:01.23 and step by step. 00:05:01.26\00:05:03.40 Paris Hill Maine, today a small 00:05:23.55\00:05:26.15 and quiet town with leafy streets 00:05:26.19\00:05:28.66 and well kept houses, yet despite its quiet 00:05:28.69\00:05:31.69 and rural location, 00:05:31.73\00:05:33.19 it was the home to some giants of the faith. 00:05:33.23\00:05:36.03 Three families of note that 00:05:36.06\00:05:37.60 lived here were the Stevens family, 00:05:37.63\00:05:39.70 the Stoll family and the Andrews family. 00:05:39.73\00:05:42.80 J. N. Andrews was the son of Edward Andrews 00:05:42.84\00:05:45.61 and the nephew of Charles Andrews, 00:05:45.64\00:05:47.71 a state representative of Maine. 00:05:47.74\00:05:50.05 Cyprian Stevens had two daughters, 00:05:50.08\00:05:52.38 one of whom married Uriah Smith 00:05:52.41\00:05:54.48 and the other married J. N. Andrews. 00:05:54.52\00:05:57.09 Today the home of Edward Andrews 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.19 stands behind me at the Paris Hill Country Club 00:05:59.22\00:06:02.32 and Cyprian Stevens farm is located just down the road. 00:06:02.36\00:06:06.70 But we start the story with another family 00:06:14.67\00:06:16.94 when in the spring of 1845 attracted by T. M. Preble 00:06:16.97\00:06:21.44 on the Sabbath made its way to the home 00:06:21.48\00:06:23.91 of Lewis B. Stole. 00:06:23.95\00:06:25.71 He set the tract aside, but his 15-year-old daughter 00:06:25.75\00:06:29.45 Marion picked it up and decided to read it. 00:06:29.48\00:06:32.39 She was convinced on the truth of the Sabbath 00:06:32.42\00:06:34.99 and decided to keep it. 00:06:35.02\00:06:36.62 She then shared the tract with her brother Oswald 00:06:36.66\00:06:39.26 and he also decided to keep the Sabbath. 00:06:39.29\00:06:42.23 They then called J. N. Andrews 00:06:42.26\00:06:44.43 who was only 15 years old, 00:06:44.47\00:06:46.33 but was respected as having an intelligent mind. 00:06:46.37\00:06:49.14 He read the tract 00:06:49.17\00:06:50.51 and also decided to keep the Sabbath. 00:06:50.54\00:06:53.64 It was later on that the parents 00:06:59.91\00:07:01.88 of the Stevens, Andrews 00:07:01.92\00:07:03.72 and Stoll families decided to keep the Sabbath 00:07:03.75\00:07:06.86 which I believe is a key point. 00:07:06.89\00:07:09.09 It was the teenagers who made the decision 00:07:09.12\00:07:11.76 to keep the Sabbath based on God's Word 00:07:11.79\00:07:14.56 regardless of what others thought. 00:07:14.60\00:07:17.07 This really is the essence of Protestantism 00:07:17.10\00:07:19.87 and a continuation of one of the key tenants 00:07:19.90\00:07:23.00 of the Reformation. 00:07:23.04\00:07:24.37 To follow conviction rather than tradition, 00:07:24.41\00:07:27.11 to let scriptures be our guide, 00:07:27.14\00:07:29.38 no matter what others may think. 00:07:29.41\00:07:31.95 Lewis B. Stole sent a letter 00:07:38.89\00:07:41.36 and $10 to the Seventh-day Baptist minister 00:07:41.39\00:07:44.89 in Hopkinton, Rhode Island to obtain some more materials. 00:07:44.93\00:07:49.06 Soon the tracts arrived and a small company 00:07:49.10\00:07:52.23 of Sabbath keeping Adventists was established 00:07:52.27\00:07:55.17 in Paris Hill Maine. 00:07:55.20\00:07:56.81 These families would go on to be pillars 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.51 in the new and fledgling movement 00:07:59.54\00:08:01.68 that was being birth. 00:08:01.71\00:08:03.21 Paris Hill Maine is also the birthplace 00:08:10.42\00:08:13.59 of the Review and Herald, 00:08:13.62\00:08:15.39 today published as the Adventist Review. 00:08:15.42\00:08:19.29 From August to November of 1850, 00:08:19.33\00:08:22.00 a magazine was published here called the Advent Review, 00:08:22.03\00:08:25.50 and then from November 1850 to June 1851, 00:08:25.53\00:08:30.01 the Review and Herald was published here 00:08:30.04\00:08:32.54 in a building near this site. 00:08:32.57\00:08:35.18 It would then move on to Saratoga Springs, New York, 00:08:35.21\00:08:38.25 Rochester, New York 00:08:38.28\00:08:40.12 before moving to Battle Creek, Michigan. 00:08:40.15\00:08:42.52 In 1856, the Stephens and Andrews families 00:08:49.52\00:08:53.46 would move to the state of Iowa 00:08:53.50\00:08:55.66 and the town of Paris Hill Maine 00:08:55.70\00:08:57.90 would become just a memory of the early beginnings 00:08:57.93\00:09:00.97 and challenges of Sabbatarian Adventism. 00:09:01.00\00:09:04.21 Though the action had moved on from this town, 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.11 their example of faithfulness 00:09:07.14\00:09:09.24 under conviction lives on today 00:09:09.28\00:09:11.98 and stands as an example 00:09:12.01\00:09:14.02 of how we ought to live our lives. 00:09:14.05\00:09:16.58 It doesn't matter who else makes a decision 00:09:16.62\00:09:19.99 or what authority is trying to instruct and guide us, 00:09:20.02\00:09:23.93 we need to be true to the convictions 00:09:23.96\00:09:25.93 of our conscience first and foremost. 00:09:25.96\00:09:28.90 It was Peter who said, 00:09:28.93\00:09:30.83 "That we ought to obey God rather than man." 00:09:30.87\00:09:34.40 Port Gibson is a rural area 00:09:55.12\00:09:57.23 just east of Rochester in New York State. 00:09:57.26\00:10:00.36 It's a quiet area with many farms 00:10:00.40\00:10:02.70 that dot the landscape. 00:10:02.73\00:10:04.17 In the 1840s there was a farm owned by Hiram Edson 00:10:04.20\00:10:07.97 that housed some very important meetings 00:10:08.00\00:10:10.57 and saw some key developments take place. 00:10:10.61\00:10:13.54 Here in the quietness of the countryside, 00:10:13.58\00:10:15.94 let us take a walk down this particular part 00:10:15.98\00:10:18.48 of memory lane. 00:10:18.51\00:10:20.12 After the 22nd of October, 1844, 00:10:25.62\00:10:29.16 the Advent believers were terribly disappointed 00:10:29.19\00:10:32.09 as their hopes and dreams 00:10:32.13\00:10:33.93 had been shattered and destroyed. 00:10:33.96\00:10:36.36 Hiram Edson was no different. 00:10:36.40\00:10:38.37 He was confused as he believed that 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.14 his study of the prophecies had been accurate, 00:10:40.17\00:10:43.04 yet Jesus hadn't come. 00:10:43.07\00:10:45.11 How would they reconcile this? 00:10:45.14\00:10:47.21 Did they have the date wrong as some had suggested? 00:10:47.24\00:10:50.28 He didn't think so, 00:10:50.31\00:10:51.65 the dates and calculations had been solid. 00:10:51.68\00:10:54.55 Did they have the event wrong? 00:10:54.58\00:10:56.22 Well, they must have because Jesus hadn't come, 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.65 but what else could it mean? 00:10:58.69\00:11:00.66 Hiram Edson was walking through a cornfield one day soon after 00:11:05.93\00:11:10.27 when he realized they had gotten 00:11:10.30\00:11:11.93 something major wrong. 00:11:11.97\00:11:13.77 They had been so focused 00:11:13.80\00:11:15.17 on the Parable of the Ten Virgins 00:11:15.20\00:11:17.14 in Matthew 25 as it seemed 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.57 to match the events of 1844 00:11:19.61\00:11:22.34 that they had missed Christ 00:11:22.38\00:11:23.81 or the wedding parable in Luke Chapter 12. 00:11:23.85\00:11:26.51 In Luke it says, "That we must wait 00:11:26.55\00:11:28.85 while we wait for the Lord to return from the wedding." 00:11:28.88\00:11:32.12 He also realized that in Daniel 7, 00:11:32.15\00:11:34.22 it says that the Son of man 00:11:34.26\00:11:35.59 would come to the Ancient of Days 00:11:35.62\00:11:37.39 rather than to the earth. 00:11:37.43\00:11:39.83 This was a revelation, later he would study this out 00:11:45.23\00:11:48.87 with Dr. Franklin B. Hahn and O. R. L. Crozier 00:11:48.90\00:11:52.74 and they would solidify their views on this matter. 00:11:52.77\00:11:56.18 They saw that Jesus was not scheduled 00:11:56.21\00:11:58.11 to come to the earth at the end of the 2300 day prophecy 00:11:58.31\00:12:02.28 of Daniel 8:14, but rather He transitioned 00:12:02.32\00:12:05.65 from the Holy Place to the Most Holy Place 00:12:05.69\00:12:08.49 in the sanctuary in heaven 00:12:08.52\00:12:09.92 beginning the work of the investigative judgment. 00:12:09.96\00:12:12.99 It was Owen Russell Loomis Crozier 00:12:13.03\00:12:15.83 who wrote the first issue of The Day-Dawn 00:12:15.86\00:12:18.53 in March of 1845 that explained the reason 00:12:18.57\00:12:22.14 for the delay in Jesus' return and preserved 00:12:22.17\00:12:25.27 the historicist framework of Daniel 8 and 9. 00:12:25.31\00:12:28.88 Hiram Edson's barn is also the place 00:12:34.08\00:12:36.58 that Captain Joseph Bates shared the truth of the Sabbath 00:12:36.62\00:12:39.95 in late 1846. 00:12:39.99\00:12:42.09 As he was reading his tract, Edson jumped up and said, 00:12:42.12\00:12:45.69 "Brother Bates this is light and truth 00:12:45.73\00:12:48.26 the seventh day is a Sabbath and I am with you to keep it." 00:12:48.30\00:12:52.53 Crozier and Hahn also accepted the Sabbath 00:12:52.57\00:12:55.24 and thus this link goes in western New York 00:12:55.27\00:12:58.21 who were presenting the sanctuary 00:12:58.24\00:12:59.84 with those in New England who were teaching the Sabbath. 00:12:59.87\00:13:03.41 For this reason, 00:13:07.35\00:13:08.68 this farm has been seen as a theological birthplace 00:13:08.72\00:13:11.62 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:13:11.65\00:13:13.46 for its where the two pillars of the Sabbath 00:13:13.49\00:13:15.76 and the sanctuary came together. 00:13:15.79\00:13:17.66 The blending of these two teachings 00:13:17.69\00:13:19.86 would form the uniqueness of this new movement, 00:13:19.89\00:13:22.73 the Sabbath was not 00:13:22.76\00:13:24.10 just seen as a reminder of creation 00:13:24.13\00:13:26.33 or as part of the Ten Commandments 00:13:26.37\00:13:28.20 but rather in the light of the sanctuary 00:13:28.24\00:13:30.51 and is eschatological or end-time context. 00:13:30.54\00:13:34.21 In time Hiram Edson and the other Advent believers 00:13:38.15\00:13:41.62 would see that their experience 00:13:41.65\00:13:43.28 in October 1844 was part of Bible prophecy 00:13:43.32\00:13:47.72 and that their very disappointment itself 00:13:47.76\00:13:49.99 was further proof that God was leading them. 00:13:50.03\00:13:52.73 In Revelation 10 it points out, "That their experience 00:13:52.76\00:13:56.13 would first be sweet in the mouth 00:13:56.16\00:13:58.33 and then it would be bitter in the belly and oh, 00:13:58.37\00:14:01.50 how bitter it had been." 00:14:01.54\00:14:03.51 The last verse in Revelation 10 admonished them 00:14:03.54\00:14:06.71 and it echoes to us today, "Thou must prophesy again." 00:14:06.74\00:14:11.81 May we take the admonition 00:14:11.85\00:14:13.42 of the preaching 00:14:13.45\00:14:14.78 of the unique message of God to heart 00:14:14.82\00:14:17.02 and go wherever He calls. 00:14:17.05\00:14:20.46 When I was growing up, if you wanted to study history, 00:14:20.49\00:14:22.99 or do research on a particular topic, 00:14:23.02\00:14:25.19 there was really only one option 00:14:25.23\00:14:26.93 that we had, and that was to read a book. 00:14:26.96\00:14:29.46 And I never really used to like reading that much. 00:14:29.50\00:14:31.73 So we decided to create a resource 00:14:31.77\00:14:33.60 that will translate this written information 00:14:33.64\00:14:35.80 into the language of today. 00:14:35.84\00:14:39.64 My name is Adam Ramdin. And my name is Clive Coutet. 00:14:39.67\00:14:42.34 And we are the cofounders of Lineage Journey. 00:14:42.38\00:14:45.18 Back in 2016, I was reading a Great Controversy 00:14:45.21\00:14:47.62 and I was really struggling 00:14:47.65\00:14:48.98 to find any relevant video resources 00:14:49.02\00:14:50.99 that I could use to aid me in my study. 00:14:51.02\00:14:52.95 So I decided to approach Adam about 00:14:52.99\00:14:54.39 the possibility of making some videos 00:14:54.42\00:14:56.12 on the Reformation. 00:14:56.16\00:14:57.69 So we started filming in the end of 2016, 00:14:57.73\00:15:00.60 and in 2017 we released 48 videos 00:15:00.63\00:15:04.17 that covered the period of the early church 00:15:04.20\00:15:06.53 all the way through to the end of the Reformation. 00:15:06.57\00:15:09.77 Then in 2018 and 2019 we released another 52 episodes 00:15:09.80\00:15:14.01 on church history. 00:15:14.04\00:15:15.51 These have now been viewed all over the world 00:15:15.54\00:15:18.01 in over 100 countries 00:15:18.05\00:15:19.61 covering about 50 different languages 00:15:19.65\00:15:21.92 and we have over 3 million views online. 00:15:21.95\00:15:25.29 These videos have been used as a resource 00:15:25.32\00:15:27.46 in both secular and Christian schools 00:15:27.49\00:15:29.92 as well as several church denominations 00:15:29.96\00:15:32.13 across the globe 00:15:32.16\00:15:33.50 using Bible studies, study groups, 00:15:33.53\00:15:35.73 as well as play to the general congregation. 00:15:35.76\00:15:37.93 They also make a great online evangelistic tool 00:15:37.97\00:15:40.67 where people are able to share them, 00:15:40.70\00:15:42.20 and we've seen them go into countries 00:15:42.24\00:15:43.61 that we ourselves can't go, 00:15:43.64\00:15:45.07 countries that are Muslim countries 00:15:45.11\00:15:46.61 where the Christian message cannot go. 00:15:46.64\00:15:49.18 One of the challenges we have though, 00:15:49.21\00:15:51.01 is that amongst our team of almost 10 people, 00:15:51.05\00:15:53.21 we are all volunteers on this project, 00:15:53.25\00:15:55.18 sacrificing our time, our effort and energy 00:15:55.22\00:15:57.62 in order to make these resources together. 00:15:57.65\00:16:00.26 Just to put things into perspective, 00:16:00.29\00:16:02.06 each Lineage episode as well as the filming 00:16:02.09\00:16:04.69 takes an additional two to three days 00:16:04.73\00:16:06.53 in post-production. 00:16:06.56\00:16:07.90 That is a lot of time and sacrifice 00:16:07.93\00:16:09.96 that this team has made 00:16:10.00\00:16:11.33 in putting 100 episodes together. 00:16:11.37\00:16:13.10 So we need to raise the funds 00:16:13.13\00:16:14.50 to cover the cost of the filming 00:16:14.54\00:16:16.30 as well as the continued production costs 00:16:16.34\00:16:19.11 that come after that. 00:16:19.14\00:16:20.54 So for as little as $1 a month, 00:16:20.58\00:16:22.44 you can help us to expand this ministry 00:16:22.48\00:16:24.65 to create new resources 00:16:24.68\00:16:26.31 to reach more people across the world. 00:16:26.35\00:16:28.65 Thank you for visiting this page 00:16:28.68\00:16:30.22 and taking the time to watch this video. 00:16:30.25\00:16:32.35 We really appreciate that. 00:16:32.39\00:16:33.96 Thank you for your support of the ministry so far. 00:16:33.99\00:16:36.42 And we ask that you would prayerfully consider 00:16:36.46\00:16:38.73 being a partner with us on this Patreon page. 00:16:38.76\00:16:42.26 May God bless you. 00:16:42.30\00:16:43.63 And we ask that you continue to keep this ministry 00:16:43.67\00:16:45.93 and our future plans in prayer. 00:16:45.97\00:16:47.67 There were many new discoveries in the Word of God at this time 00:17:06.49\00:17:09.92 as God was forming His church 00:17:09.96\00:17:12.03 and whenever a truth is discovered, 00:17:12.06\00:17:14.20 a counterfeit is not far behind. 00:17:14.23\00:17:16.97 Another phenomenon that was sweeping 00:17:17.00\00:17:18.93 the northeastern part of the United States 00:17:18.97\00:17:21.20 at this time 00:17:21.24\00:17:22.57 started with the Fox sisters in the late 1840s. 00:17:22.60\00:17:25.97 The Fox family of John and Magaret 00:17:26.01\00:17:28.31 and their two daughters Margaret and Katie 00:17:28.34\00:17:30.75 moved into the little town of Hydesville, New York 00:17:30.78\00:17:33.78 and although the original home is no longer standing, 00:17:33.82\00:17:36.82 it would have stood just behind me. 00:17:36.85\00:17:39.39 The Fox Sisters are known 00:17:39.42\00:17:40.99 as the founders of modern spiritualism. 00:17:41.02\00:17:43.83 In 1848, 00:17:48.36\00:17:49.70 Margaret and Katie were 15 and 12 years old 00:17:49.73\00:17:52.67 and lived in a house 00:17:52.70\00:17:54.04 that had a reputation as being haunted, 00:17:54.07\00:17:56.40 making rapping or knocking sounds 00:17:56.44\00:17:58.57 with their knuckles 00:17:58.61\00:17:59.94 mimicking sounds they had heard in the house 00:17:59.97\00:18:02.28 to give the impression that it was haunted 00:18:02.31\00:18:04.21 for the purpose of scaring their mother. 00:18:04.25\00:18:06.85 Questions were asked 00:18:06.88\00:18:08.22 and soon she would ask questions 00:18:08.25\00:18:10.02 and the answers would come back 00:18:10.05\00:18:11.42 in a number of wraps or knocks that they heard. 00:18:11.45\00:18:14.42 She was convinced, their neighbors were called 00:18:14.46\00:18:16.86 and it wasn't long before 00:18:16.89\00:18:18.23 the girls were acting as mediums 00:18:18.26\00:18:20.13 communicating with the spirits and taking questions. 00:18:20.16\00:18:22.96 Some said that it was a hoax 00:18:28.07\00:18:29.70 while others claimed that it was real 00:18:29.74\00:18:31.61 and that they really were mediums 00:18:31.64\00:18:33.54 communicating directly with the spirits. 00:18:33.58\00:18:36.14 Whichever way you look at it, 00:18:36.18\00:18:37.81 few can ignore the phenomenon known as spiritualism, 00:18:37.85\00:18:41.25 the belief that the spirits communicate with the living. 00:18:41.28\00:18:44.45 This would grow over time 00:18:44.49\00:18:46.19 and become an established part of society. 00:18:46.22\00:18:49.46 It's fascinating that Hydesville, New York 00:18:49.49\00:18:52.23 is only about 15 minutes away from Hiram Edison's farm, 00:18:52.26\00:18:56.43 the theological birthplace 00:18:56.46\00:18:58.40 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:18:58.43\00:19:00.30 It's only about 20 minutes as well 00:19:00.34\00:19:02.57 from Kamura Hill 00:19:02.60\00:19:03.94 where Joseph Smith claimed the angel of Moroni descended 00:19:03.97\00:19:07.74 and gave him the golden plates 00:19:07.78\00:19:09.68 which were translated as the Book of Mormon. 00:19:09.71\00:19:12.55 Thus, three significant movements 00:19:12.58\00:19:14.88 all came from the same area. 00:19:14.92\00:19:17.12 A key figure 00:19:23.83\00:19:25.16 to bring the biblical view of the state of man in death 00:19:25.19\00:19:27.86 would be George Storrs. 00:19:27.90\00:19:29.53 Born in Lebanon, New Hampshire in 1796 00:19:29.56\00:19:33.03 as the youngest of eight children. 00:19:33.07\00:19:35.17 As a child, he felt afraid of God 00:19:35.20\00:19:37.41 and alienated from Christianity 00:19:37.44\00:19:39.67 due to the sermons he would hear preached 00:19:39.71\00:19:41.64 on the wicked tormenting in hellfire. 00:19:41.68\00:19:44.25 At the age of 17, 00:19:44.28\00:19:45.81 he made a decision to study out the goodness of God 00:19:45.85\00:19:48.98 and under this influence and the prayers of his mother, 00:19:49.02\00:19:52.29 he gave his life to Jesus at the age of 19. 00:19:52.32\00:19:55.99 Under conviction, he felt a call to preach 00:19:56.02\00:19:58.89 and started doing this in 1825 00:19:58.93\00:20:02.16 and would often preach against slavery 00:20:02.20\00:20:04.73 even ending up in prison once 00:20:04.77\00:20:07.10 for mentioning this in his prayers. 00:20:07.14\00:20:09.20 One day whilst traveling by train, 00:20:13.88\00:20:16.01 he read a tract by Deacon Henry Grew 00:20:16.04\00:20:18.58 from Philadelphia 00:20:18.61\00:20:19.95 on the subject of the state of the dead. 00:20:19.98\00:20:22.25 This led him to study his Bible 00:20:22.28\00:20:24.32 and after several years of study, 00:20:24.35\00:20:26.42 correspondence and conversation 00:20:26.45\00:20:28.72 he came to the settle conclusion 00:20:28.76\00:20:30.86 that man does not possess inherent immortality 00:20:30.89\00:20:34.06 that it is a gift from God 00:20:34.10\00:20:36.03 and that the wicked are exterminated by fire 00:20:36.06\00:20:39.43 at the second death. 00:20:39.47\00:20:40.80 Due to the significant difference from the common view 00:20:44.91\00:20:48.08 that the dead goes straight to heaven, 00:20:48.11\00:20:50.05 he experienced a lot of persecution 00:20:50.08\00:20:52.48 and isolation from the various churches. 00:20:52.51\00:20:55.32 However, this could not stop the printed press. 00:20:55.35\00:20:58.52 In 1843, 00:20:58.55\00:21:00.22 Storrs' six sermons were published 00:21:00.26\00:21:02.92 and 10,000 copies were distributed 00:21:02.96\00:21:05.46 with a further 200,000 over time. 00:21:05.49\00:21:08.63 This would have a significant impact 00:21:08.66\00:21:10.83 on the Millerite movement. 00:21:10.87\00:21:12.30 And although William Miller himself 00:21:12.33\00:21:14.30 did not accept this teaching, 00:21:14.34\00:21:15.90 many others would 00:21:15.94\00:21:17.27 and he would go on to be a mainstay 00:21:17.31\00:21:19.04 of the Sabbath keeping Adventist 00:21:19.07\00:21:21.01 as they sought to be true to the Bible 00:21:21.04\00:21:23.18 as they developed their doctrinal beliefs. 00:21:23.21\00:21:25.48 Although George Storrs did not accept the Sabbath 00:21:29.25\00:21:31.85 or the sanctuary, 00:21:31.89\00:21:33.22 he nonetheless made a significant contribution 00:21:33.25\00:21:35.49 to a key doctrinal belief. 00:21:35.52\00:21:37.49 Storrs considered the idea of an eternally burning hell 00:21:37.53\00:21:40.80 to be a blot on the character of God 00:21:40.83\00:21:43.13 and contrary to the reality that God is love. 00:21:43.16\00:21:46.77 The love of God needs to be at the center 00:21:46.80\00:21:48.94 of every doctrine that we hold and teach from the Bible. 00:21:48.97\00:21:51.97 And Storrs restored the love of God 00:21:52.01\00:21:54.14 back through this teaching 00:21:54.18\00:21:55.51 and showed his character in its true light. 00:21:55.54\00:21:58.51 May we seek to do the same, 00:21:58.55\00:22:00.42 anytime we share God's word with others. 00:22:00.45\00:22:03.08 Topsham, Maine is located 00:22:21.00\00:22:23.07 about 25 miles north of Portland Maine 00:22:23.10\00:22:26.61 and is the home of Fort Howland, 00:22:26.64\00:22:29.01 the home of Stockbridge Howland, 00:22:29.04\00:22:31.05 an important place in early Sabbatarian Adventism. 00:22:31.08\00:22:35.28 This town would have had a population of around 2,000 00:22:35.32\00:22:38.75 in the 1840s 00:22:38.79\00:22:40.39 and the principal industry 00:22:40.42\00:22:42.22 would have been the mill factories 00:22:42.26\00:22:43.83 along the Androscoggin River. 00:22:43.86\00:22:46.43 Stockbridge was a close friend of James and Ellen White 00:22:46.46\00:22:50.37 during the early years of their marriage 00:22:50.40\00:22:52.63 and they would spend a lot of time in his house 00:22:52.67\00:22:55.27 today located on Seven Elm Street 00:22:55.30\00:22:57.91 also living there for some time. 00:22:57.94\00:22:59.97 Joseph Bates had recently published a tract 00:23:05.21\00:23:07.98 that linked the Sabbath with the sanctuary 00:23:08.02\00:23:10.12 based on Revelation 11:19 00:23:10.15\00:23:13.29 marking a progression 00:23:13.32\00:23:14.89 in the development of this doctrine. 00:23:14.92\00:23:16.99 It was shortly after this in April of 1847 00:23:17.03\00:23:20.50 when in this house behind me, 00:23:20.53\00:23:22.26 Ellen White had her Sabbath halo vision. 00:23:22.30\00:23:25.23 She saw the Ten Commandments of God 00:23:25.27\00:23:27.44 inside the Ark of the Covenant 00:23:27.47\00:23:29.27 with a special halo of light around them. 00:23:29.30\00:23:32.71 This marked the Sabbath as being present truth, 00:23:32.74\00:23:35.98 for they saw Jesus 00:23:36.01\00:23:37.35 before the ark in the Most Holy Place. 00:23:37.38\00:23:40.52 Shortly after this, James White published a tract 00:23:40.55\00:23:44.29 that crystallized the views of the founders of Adventism 00:23:44.32\00:23:47.96 entitled "A Word to the Little Flock." 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.86 In October of 1847, 00:23:55.40\00:23:58.10 the Howlands invited the Whites to move in with them 00:23:58.13\00:24:01.04 and they moved into the upstairs floor 00:24:01.07\00:24:03.04 of the house. 00:24:03.07\00:24:04.41 James White got a job nearby hauling stone 00:24:04.44\00:24:07.48 for the railroad 00:24:07.51\00:24:08.84 as well as cutting wood for 50 cents a day. 00:24:08.88\00:24:12.08 This was barely enough to live on, 00:24:12.11\00:24:14.48 but he would still use much of the money 00:24:14.52\00:24:16.79 to publish tracts to share with people. 00:24:16.82\00:24:19.69 The sacrifice of these early pioneers 00:24:19.72\00:24:22.16 is remarkable 00:24:22.19\00:24:23.53 considering the poverty that they were living in. 00:24:23.56\00:24:26.33 Topsham, Maine is also the location 00:24:30.57\00:24:32.83 of one of the six Sabbath conferences 00:24:32.87\00:24:35.07 of 1848 in the Howland home. 00:24:35.10\00:24:38.54 It was after this conference that the Whites realized 00:24:38.57\00:24:41.18 they could not travel with Henry everywhere 00:24:41.21\00:24:43.61 due to the busy schedule. 00:24:43.65\00:24:45.65 He thus spent the next several years 00:24:45.68\00:24:47.78 living with the Howland 00:24:47.82\00:24:49.15 and it wasn't until his parents moved 00:24:49.18\00:24:51.15 to Rochester, New York 00:24:51.19\00:24:52.75 that he moved back with them. 00:24:52.79\00:24:54.72 Such were the sacrifices that they made early on 00:24:54.76\00:24:58.03 due to the busy traveling and speaking life 00:24:58.06\00:25:00.90 that they had. 00:25:00.93\00:25:02.26 During the fall of 1863, 00:25:06.30\00:25:08.77 the Whites would return to New England 00:25:08.80\00:25:10.67 and spend some time in the Howland home. 00:25:10.71\00:25:13.81 It was good to be back with old friends 00:25:13.84\00:25:16.14 that they shared so many happy memories with 00:25:16.18\00:25:18.51 from almost 20 years prior. 00:25:18.55\00:25:21.08 The work that had started here had progressed a lot. 00:25:21.12\00:25:24.89 The church was now officially organized, 00:25:24.92\00:25:27.19 had publishing houses 00:25:27.22\00:25:28.82 and believers were growing all over the country. 00:25:28.86\00:25:32.09 As they came back to a place that reminded them 00:25:32.13\00:25:34.96 of the extreme sacrifice 00:25:35.00\00:25:36.80 they had to make 00:25:36.83\00:25:38.17 both financially and as parents 00:25:38.20\00:25:40.50 they would experience a terrible loss. 00:25:40.54\00:25:43.37 Henry was assisting 00:25:47.84\00:25:49.24 in the completion of the 1863 prophetic chart 00:25:49.28\00:25:52.95 by gluing them on to the cloth back, 00:25:52.98\00:25:55.15 when in the process of doing this 00:25:55.18\00:25:57.02 he contracted a cold 00:25:57.05\00:25:58.69 which turned into pneumonia resulting in a sudden death. 00:25:58.72\00:26:02.76 This was a terrible shock and caused deep sadness 00:26:02.79\00:26:06.09 for the whole family. 00:26:06.13\00:26:07.73 His funeral was held just down the road 00:26:07.76\00:26:09.73 in the Baptist Church here, 00:26:09.76\00:26:11.37 but his final resting place would be in Battle Creek. 00:26:11.40\00:26:14.74 He said he wanted to be buried near his brother John Herbert. 00:26:14.77\00:26:18.37 In case his parents were away traveling, 00:26:18.41\00:26:20.71 he could be near to him on the resurrection morning. 00:26:20.74\00:26:23.41 Shortly after the death of Henry, 00:26:27.72\00:26:29.62 Ellen White would publish this book, 00:26:29.65\00:26:31.52 an appeal to youth 00:26:31.55\00:26:33.12 which included some of her letters 00:26:33.15\00:26:35.09 to her children. 00:26:35.12\00:26:36.59 Writing shortly afterwards Ellen White commented, 00:26:36.62\00:26:39.69 "But God comforted us in our bereavement 00:26:39.73\00:26:42.93 and with faith and courage 00:26:42.96\00:26:44.97 we pressed on with the work God had given us 00:26:45.00\00:26:47.87 in the bright hope of seeing our children 00:26:47.90\00:26:50.84 who had been torn from us by death 00:26:50.87\00:26:53.24 in the land where death and sickness will never come." 00:26:53.27\00:26:57.28 If you have experienced a similar loss in your life, 00:26:57.31\00:27:00.95 I pray that you may find comfort as well. 00:27:00.98\00:27:04.12
