October the 22nd, 1844 00:00:21.52\00:00:24.75 was for many people the worst day of their lives, 00:00:24.79\00:00:28.39 they had preached a message of hope 00:00:28.42\00:00:30.36 about Jesus' soon return and then all their hopes 00:00:30.39\00:00:33.86 were dashed. 00:00:33.90\00:00:35.23 Friends who had ridiculed them 00:00:35.26\00:00:36.60 waited with fresh ammunition in the coming days. 00:00:36.63\00:00:39.97 It was not an easy time to be a believer. 00:00:40.00\00:00:43.20 The great disappointment was exactly that. 00:00:43.24\00:00:46.17 A huge disappointment 00:00:46.21\00:00:47.91 to those who had eagerly waited for Jesus' return 00:00:47.94\00:00:50.81 and while it caused a lot of embarrassment 00:00:50.85\00:00:53.28 to those who had fervently preached it, 00:00:53.31\00:00:55.55 all was not doomed and gloom. 00:00:55.58\00:00:58.22 Fervently believing in the return of Jesus, 00:01:02.72\00:01:05.39 many of the believers acted practically 00:01:05.43\00:01:08.06 so that their works corresponded with their faith. 00:01:08.10\00:01:11.80 Some of them sold homes earlier 00:01:11.83\00:01:13.74 in the year as they believed 00:01:13.77\00:01:15.40 that they would not need them soon. 00:01:15.44\00:01:17.44 Also, some of the farmers left their crops in the field 00:01:17.47\00:01:21.01 and one of these was named Leonard Hastings. 00:01:21.04\00:01:24.11 He had a potato patch right here 00:01:24.15\00:01:26.61 and he believed in Jesus' soon return 00:01:26.65\00:01:29.02 and thought that by digging his potatoes 00:01:29.05\00:01:31.49 it would be a denial of his faith. 00:01:31.52\00:01:33.99 Some of his friends 00:01:34.02\00:01:35.36 did not believe in Jesus' soon return 00:01:35.39\00:01:37.06 and offered to dig the potatoes for him 00:01:37.09\00:01:39.46 and store them in the barn. 00:01:39.49\00:01:41.36 He was sure that he wouldn't need them 00:01:41.40\00:01:43.77 and by not digging them, he would proclaim his faith. 00:01:43.80\00:01:47.57 Some said that the potatoes would rot in the ground 00:01:47.60\00:01:50.34 while others called him foolish. 00:01:50.37\00:01:53.38 The autumn of 1844 was particularly mild 00:01:56.85\00:02:00.32 and when he finally dug his potatoes in November, 00:02:00.35\00:02:03.42 he found he had some of the best potatoes 00:02:03.45\00:02:05.89 he had ever grown. 00:02:05.92\00:02:07.39 Some of his farmers in the area did not fare so well. 00:02:07.42\00:02:11.09 You see in that particular part of New England 00:02:11.13\00:02:13.56 there was a potato blight 00:02:13.60\00:02:15.10 that rotted nearly all the potatoes 00:02:15.13\00:02:17.47 that have been dug on time. 00:02:17.50\00:02:19.60 He had a huge supply of potatoes enough for himself 00:02:19.63\00:02:23.64 and some of his neighbors who had called him foolish. 00:02:23.67\00:02:27.68 In spring the next year, 00:02:27.71\00:02:29.41 he was one of the few farmers who had seed potatoes 00:02:29.44\00:02:32.91 due to the blight that happened the year before. 00:02:32.95\00:02:35.45 He was then able to sell these at $4.50 a bushel, 00:02:35.48\00:02:40.22 a huge price in that day. 00:02:40.26\00:02:43.16 Leonard Hastings wasn't the only potato 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.50 patch preacher, Silas Guildford, 00:02:48.53\00:02:50.87 William Miller's brother-in-law was another one. 00:02:50.90\00:02:53.64 He planted a 22-acre field of potatoes 00:02:53.67\00:02:56.81 here in upstate New York 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.97 near Oswego in the spring of 1844. 00:02:59.01\00:03:02.94 In the autumn he didn't dig his potatoes 00:03:02.98\00:03:05.41 and the snows came early. 00:03:05.45\00:03:07.58 In the spring of the next year he said to his wife 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.82 that he was going to go up to the field 00:03:10.85\00:03:12.52 and dig the potatoes. 00:03:12.55\00:03:13.92 She pleaded with him not to, 00:03:13.96\00:03:15.82 saying, they had already been the joke of the town 00:03:15.86\00:03:18.26 and they didn't need to give people 00:03:18.29\00:03:19.89 another reason to make fun of them. 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.90 Besides that the potatoes would have frozen 00:03:21.93\00:03:24.53 and they would have rotted in the ground. 00:03:24.57\00:03:26.84 He went up to the field with his son Ervin 00:03:26.87\00:03:29.67 and as he put his fork in the ground 00:03:29.70\00:03:31.74 he dug up some lovely potatoes, 00:03:31.77\00:03:34.14 the whole field as well yielded a huge supply 00:03:34.18\00:03:37.48 of some of the best potatoes he had ever seen. 00:03:37.51\00:03:40.58 He was able to sell them 00:03:40.62\00:03:41.98 for $4.50 a bushel, 00:03:42.02\00:03:44.82 a huge price, pay off his mortgage 00:03:44.85\00:03:47.36 and have a good amount of money left over afterwards. 00:03:47.39\00:03:50.96 God honored the faith of these believers 00:03:55.73\00:03:58.23 to provide a testament of His power 00:03:58.27\00:04:00.70 and watch care over His children. 00:04:00.74\00:04:03.04 Sometimes God allows hard times 00:04:03.07\00:04:05.37 to come upon us but we are never alone, 00:04:05.41\00:04:08.04 as a mother watches over her children 00:04:08.08\00:04:10.55 so God watches over us, His children. 00:04:10.58\00:04:13.98 If you are faithful to God, 00:04:14.02\00:04:15.62 then you can be assured that there are times 00:04:15.65\00:04:18.05 when God will do the impossible 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.02 for you to demonstrate His power. 00:04:20.06\00:04:22.69 The Bible says, 00:04:22.72\00:04:24.06 "That the eyes of the Lord run to and fro 00:04:24.09\00:04:26.59 across the face of the earth looking for those 00:04:26.63\00:04:29.46 whose hearts are perfect towards Him 00:04:29.50\00:04:32.03 and on whose behalf He can show His power." 00:04:32.07\00:04:35.70 Ellen Gould Harmon and her twin sister Elizabeth 00:05:16.81\00:05:19.81 were born on November the 26th, 1827 00:05:19.85\00:05:23.82 in the town of Gorham, Maine 00:05:23.85\00:05:25.85 about 12 miles west of Portland. 00:05:25.89\00:05:28.72 The state of Maine has named her birthplace a historic site. 00:05:28.76\00:05:32.63 Even though there is some question today 00:05:32.66\00:05:34.86 over the exact place of the house. 00:05:34.90\00:05:37.83 Her father Robert was a hat maker 00:05:42.14\00:05:44.17 and this was the family business. 00:05:44.21\00:05:46.11 Acting upon the information that hats sold 00:05:46.14\00:05:48.68 for a much higher price in the south than the north, 00:05:48.71\00:05:51.51 he headed down south to the state of Georgia. 00:05:51.55\00:05:54.38 Whilst he was gone though, something tragic would happen. 00:05:54.42\00:05:58.15 Ellen and Elizabeth 00:06:02.76\00:06:04.09 attended the Brackett Street School. 00:06:04.13\00:06:05.99 The building stands behind me today 00:06:06.03\00:06:08.16 although it's no longer used as a school. 00:06:08.20\00:06:10.37 And one day whilst walking home, 00:06:10.40\00:06:12.67 they were shouted at angrily by a bigger girl, 00:06:12.70\00:06:15.80 sensing trouble and wanting to avoid it 00:06:15.84\00:06:18.47 they started to run, 00:06:18.51\00:06:19.91 and whilst running Ellen turned to look 00:06:19.94\00:06:22.68 and in that split moment a rock smashed her in the face. 00:06:22.71\00:06:26.78 Despite bleeding heavily 00:06:26.82\00:06:28.65 and fainting several times she made it home 00:06:28.68\00:06:31.85 and a doctor was called for immediately. 00:06:31.89\00:06:34.29 The first doctor said that 00:06:39.76\00:06:41.10 she wouldn't live more than a few days, 00:06:41.13\00:06:42.90 another one suggested that 00:06:42.93\00:06:44.27 they put some silver wire in her nose 00:06:44.30\00:06:46.53 to maintain its shape 00:06:46.57\00:06:48.14 but in the end nothing was done. 00:06:48.17\00:06:50.84 She lay unconscious for three weeks 00:06:50.87\00:06:53.27 and when she finally regained her consciousness 00:06:53.31\00:06:55.81 she had no recollection. 00:06:55.84\00:06:58.21 Her face was forever changed 00:06:58.25\00:07:00.45 and when her father returned from his trip down south, 00:07:00.48\00:07:03.82 painfully for Ellen, 00:07:03.85\00:07:05.52 he did not recognize her at first glance. 00:07:05.55\00:07:08.62 Ellen had to put it with ridicule and name-calling 00:07:14.20\00:07:16.70 from the children in her neighborhood 00:07:16.73\00:07:18.67 and struggle to read when she went back to school. 00:07:18.70\00:07:21.57 And eventually she had to leave school. 00:07:21.60\00:07:24.27 The course of her life would take another massive turn 00:07:24.31\00:07:27.84 when a popular preacher William Miller came to town. 00:07:27.88\00:07:30.98 Her family were Methodist and they went to hear him 00:07:36.55\00:07:38.99 preached at a church on Casco Street, Portland. 00:07:39.02\00:07:42.46 They heard him speak convincingly 00:07:42.49\00:07:44.63 and passionately about the soon and imminent return of Jesus. 00:07:44.66\00:07:49.33 It seems almost strange today to think that 00:07:49.36\00:07:52.23 this was a radical new teaching. 00:07:52.27\00:07:54.57 They embraced this message 00:07:54.60\00:07:56.34 and for this reason they were disfellowship 00:07:56.37\00:07:59.07 from the Chestnut Methodist Church here, 00:07:59.11\00:08:02.04 not because anyone questioned their morals or Christian life, 00:08:02.08\00:08:06.05 but simply because they embraced the message 00:08:06.08\00:08:08.32 of the soon return of Jesus. 00:08:08.35\00:08:10.45 Ellen was 17 years old on October the 22nd, 1844 00:08:16.49\00:08:21.26 when Jesus did not come 00:08:21.30\00:08:22.86 and they experienced the great disappointment. 00:08:22.90\00:08:25.93 Her twin sister Elizabeth and her brother Robert 00:08:25.97\00:08:28.60 would lose their faith in 00:08:28.64\00:08:30.01 Jesus' soon returns in the coming weeks 00:08:30.04\00:08:32.51 though Robert would later regain it. 00:08:32.54\00:08:35.01 And so, God ordained that out of obscurity 00:08:35.04\00:08:38.38 from a small town in Maine in the northeasterly tip 00:08:38.41\00:08:42.05 of the United States of America 00:08:42.08\00:08:44.05 something great would emerge. 00:08:44.09\00:08:46.39 Despite suffering terrible injuries 00:08:46.42\00:08:48.89 that would have hindered many other people in life, 00:08:48.92\00:08:51.53 despite a lack of education facing ridicule 00:08:51.56\00:08:54.96 about her appearance and faith, 00:08:55.00\00:08:56.97 God would use her to impact the world. 00:08:57.00\00:09:00.40 And so today no matter how small 00:09:00.44\00:09:02.80 or insignificant our background or experience may be, 00:09:02.84\00:09:06.94 God is looking for humble vessels 00:09:06.98\00:09:09.24 that He can use. 00:09:09.28\00:09:10.61 May you be one of them. 00:09:10.65\00:09:13.58 Several weeks after the great disappointment, 00:09:52.65\00:09:54.92 Ellen was in the home of Mrs. Haynes 00:09:54.96\00:09:57.33 when as all the young women knelt to pray, 00:09:57.36\00:09:59.89 God gave Ellen Harmon a vision. 00:09:59.93\00:10:02.23 He showed her the travels 00:10:02.26\00:10:03.70 of the people of God to the City of God 00:10:03.73\00:10:06.47 and assured her that 00:10:06.50\00:10:07.84 the light given before October the 22nd was genuine. 00:10:07.87\00:10:12.01 No explanation for the great disappointment 00:10:12.04\00:10:14.51 was given, but the assurance on its own 00:10:14.54\00:10:17.18 was a huge encouragement. 00:10:17.21\00:10:18.88 A week later God gave Ellen another vision 00:10:23.69\00:10:26.62 with the added injunction 00:10:26.65\00:10:28.26 to tell the world what I have told you. 00:10:28.29\00:10:30.86 Ellen was a timid, 00:10:30.89\00:10:32.39 frail and sickly young 17-year-old 00:10:32.43\00:10:35.46 and she wondered if she could possibly do 00:10:35.50\00:10:37.83 what God was asking her. 00:10:37.87\00:10:39.43 The angel assured her that God would be with her, 00:10:39.47\00:10:41.84 that He would be her guide and her strength. 00:10:41.87\00:10:44.44 Ellen was willing, 00:10:44.47\00:10:45.81 but she wondered if the Advent believers 00:10:45.84\00:10:47.78 would accept a message from someone so young 00:10:47.81\00:10:50.48 and in such poor physical condition. 00:10:50.51\00:10:53.05 That night there was a meeting at her house of the believers 00:10:59.22\00:11:02.29 but feeling nervous and frightened 00:11:02.32\00:11:04.16 she actually ran away from home 00:11:04.19\00:11:06.09 and went to a friend's house three or four miles away. 00:11:06.13\00:11:09.40 There she met a man named Joseph Turner 00:11:09.43\00:11:11.77 who encouraged her and told her that 00:11:11.80\00:11:14.07 he was interested in hearing what she had to say. 00:11:14.10\00:11:17.01 She fled to an upstairs room and was there troubled 00:11:17.04\00:11:20.24 by a sense of duty and commitment mixed with fear. 00:11:20.28\00:11:24.25 Had God forsaken her? 00:11:24.28\00:11:26.21 At last, she surrendered and promised that 00:11:26.25\00:11:29.08 she would share once she got home 00:11:29.12\00:11:31.09 but when she got home, the believers had left 00:11:31.12\00:11:34.02 and the meeting was over. 00:11:34.06\00:11:35.66 At the next meeting, 00:11:41.26\00:11:42.60 she gave an account of her vision in detail 00:11:42.63\00:11:45.27 and instead of being met with derision and scorn, 00:11:45.30\00:11:48.10 she found the believers happy 00:11:48.14\00:11:49.64 to listen and learn the reasons for their disappointment. 00:11:49.67\00:11:52.91 Afterwards still feeling fearful, 00:11:52.94\00:11:55.64 she had a visit from her angel who said, 00:11:55.68\00:11:58.01 "Deliver the message faithfully, 00:11:58.05\00:12:00.28 endure to the end 00:12:00.32\00:12:01.85 and ye shall eat the fruit of the tree of life 00:12:01.88\00:12:04.79 and drink the water of life." 00:12:04.82\00:12:07.36 Ellen committed herself to use in the gift 00:12:13.16\00:12:15.63 that God had bestowed upon her. 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.03 This gift was given to guide this small 00:12:18.07\00:12:20.44 and fledgling group through some hard times ahead. 00:12:20.47\00:12:23.87 There was no organized church, no recognized pastors, 00:12:23.91\00:12:27.64 no health care or education system, 00:12:27.68\00:12:30.15 no official publications, 00:12:30.18\00:12:32.28 just scattered groups of believers 00:12:32.31\00:12:34.38 trying to make sense out 00:12:34.42\00:12:36.02 of the great disappointment experienced 00:12:36.05\00:12:38.29 and be faithful 00:12:38.32\00:12:39.65 to their understanding of God's Word. 00:12:39.69\00:12:41.62 The gift of prophecy would be pivotal 00:12:48.50\00:12:50.63 in helping this small group to pull through, 00:12:50.67\00:12:53.17 it would help to confirm 00:12:53.20\00:12:54.57 what they had studied in God's Word 00:12:54.60\00:12:56.64 and let them know 00:12:56.67\00:12:58.01 when they were on the right track. 00:12:58.04\00:12:59.47 It would be a beacon of life providing guidance 00:12:59.51\00:13:02.61 and direction and is one of the means 00:13:02.64\00:13:04.88 that God has used to lead His people. 00:13:04.91\00:13:07.45 In Old and New Testament times, 00:13:07.48\00:13:10.05 the gift of prophecy has been used. 00:13:10.09\00:13:12.75 In 2 Chronicles 20:20, it says, 00:13:12.79\00:13:16.52 "Believe on the Lord your God and be established, 00:13:16.56\00:13:19.89 believe His prophets and you shall prosper." 00:13:19.93\00:13:22.90 God has given us a great gift today. 00:13:22.93\00:13:25.63 Let us remember to prove all things 00:13:25.67\00:13:28.14 and hold fast that which is good. 00:13:28.17\00:13:30.67 When I was growing up, if you wanted to study history, 00:13:45.69\00:13:48.16 or do research on a particular topic, 00:13:48.19\00:13:50.36 there was really only one option that we had, 00:13:50.39\00:13:52.86 and that was to read a book. 00:13:52.89\00:13:54.66 And I never really used to like reading that much. 00:13:54.70\00:13:56.93 So we decided to create a resource 00:13:56.97\00:13:58.93 that will translate this written information 00:13:58.97\00:14:01.04 into the language of today. 00:14:01.07\00:14:04.97 My name is Adam Ramdin. And my name is Clive Coutet. 00:14:05.01\00:14:07.58 And we are the cofounders of Lineage Journey. 00:14:07.61\00:14:10.45 Back in 2016, I was reading a Great Controversy 00:14:10.48\00:14:12.91 and I was really struggling to find any relevant video 00:14:12.95\00:14:15.55 resources that I could use to aid me in my study. 00:14:15.58\00:14:18.02 So I decided to approach Adam about the possibility 00:14:18.05\00:14:20.39 of making some videos on the Reformation. 00:14:20.42\00:14:22.92 So we started filming in the end of 2016, and in 2017 00:14:22.96\00:14:27.40 we released 48 videos that covered the period 00:14:27.43\00:14:30.80 of the early church all the way through 00:14:30.83\00:14:32.90 to the end of the Reformation. 00:14:32.93\00:14:35.00 Then in 2018 and 2019 we released 00:14:35.04\00:14:37.61 another 52 episodes on church history. 00:14:37.64\00:14:40.74 These have now been viewed all over the world 00:14:40.78\00:14:43.41 in over 100 countries 00:14:43.45\00:14:44.88 covering about 50 different languages 00:14:44.91\00:14:47.25 and we have over 3 million views online. 00:14:47.28\00:14:50.59 These videos have been used as a resource 00:14:50.62\00:14:52.75 in both secular and Christian schools 00:14:52.79\00:14:55.12 as well as several church denominations 00:14:55.16\00:14:57.46 across the globe using Bible studies, 00:14:57.49\00:14:59.89 study groups, as well as play to the general congregation. 00:14:59.93\00:15:03.16 They also make a great online evangelistic tool 00:15:03.20\00:15:05.93 where people are able to share them, 00:15:05.97\00:15:07.47 and we've seen them go into countries 00:15:07.50\00:15:08.94 that we ourselves can't go, 00:15:08.97\00:15:10.34 countries that are Muslim countries where 00:15:10.37\00:15:12.27 the Christian message cannot go. 00:15:12.31\00:15:14.61 One of the challenges we have though, 00:15:14.64\00:15:16.24 is that amongst our team of almost 10 people, 00:15:16.28\00:15:18.41 we are all volunteers on this project, 00:15:18.45\00:15:20.42 sacrificing our time, our effort and energy 00:15:20.45\00:15:22.92 in order to make these resources together. 00:15:22.95\00:15:25.49 Just to put things into perspective, 00:15:25.52\00:15:27.29 each Lineage episode as well as the filming 00:15:27.32\00:15:29.89 takes an additional two to three days 00:15:29.92\00:15:31.96 in post-production. 00:15:31.99\00:15:33.33 That is a lot of time and sacrifice that 00:15:33.36\00:15:35.43 this team has made in putting 100 episodes together. 00:15:35.46\00:15:38.37 So we need to raise the funds 00:15:38.40\00:15:39.83 to cover the cost of the filming 00:15:39.87\00:15:41.67 as well as the continued production costs 00:15:41.70\00:15:44.41 that come after that. 00:15:44.44\00:15:45.77 So for as little as $1 a month, 00:15:45.81\00:15:47.78 you can help us to expand this ministry 00:15:47.81\00:15:49.84 to create new resources to reach more people 00:15:49.88\00:15:52.85 across the world. 00:15:52.88\00:15:54.22 Thank you for visiting this page 00:15:54.25\00:15:55.58 and taking the time to watch this video. 00:15:55.62\00:15:57.69 We really appreciate that. 00:15:57.72\00:15:59.12 Thank you for your support of the ministry so far. 00:15:59.15\00:16:01.76 And we ask that you would prayerfully consider 00:16:01.79\00:16:03.96 being a partner with us on this Patreon page. 00:16:03.99\00:16:07.53 May God bless you. 00:16:07.56\00:16:08.90 And we ask that you continue to keep 00:16:08.93\00:16:10.27 this ministry and our future plans in prayer. 00:16:10.30\00:16:13.30 Ellen White wasn't the first or only person 00:16:36.22\00:16:39.09 to receive visions during this time period. 00:16:39.13\00:16:41.93 Two men also received the gift of prophecy, 00:16:41.96\00:16:44.77 but each one would have vastly different experiences 00:16:44.80\00:16:48.34 and outcomes in their lives and ministry. 00:16:48.37\00:16:51.61 God often overlooks people 00:16:51.64\00:16:53.74 that are qualified in an earthly sense 00:16:53.78\00:16:56.11 and uses those whom others might not. 00:16:56.14\00:16:59.48 Academic qualifications, eloquent speech 00:16:59.51\00:17:02.55 and a popular personality are all valued by society, 00:17:02.58\00:17:06.55 but God looks for the person who is humble, 00:17:06.59\00:17:09.12 who if they are used will bring honor to God. 00:17:09.16\00:17:12.79 The first person worthy of our mention is William Foy. 00:17:12.83\00:17:17.63 William Foy, an African-American 00:17:23.07\00:17:25.04 was known as an exceptional speaker 00:17:25.07\00:17:27.44 and was in his early 20s in 1842 00:17:27.48\00:17:30.55 when he received several dramatic visions. 00:17:30.58\00:17:33.35 The first was on January the 18th 00:17:33.38\00:17:35.75 and it lasted for two and a half hours 00:17:35.78\00:17:38.29 and happened in a church 00:17:38.32\00:17:39.65 in Southwark Street here in Boston. 00:17:39.69\00:17:42.72 A physician was present 00:17:42.76\00:17:44.09 and could detect no sign of life 00:17:44.13\00:17:46.56 except around his heart, his breath had left him. 00:17:46.59\00:17:50.97 He had a second vision on February the 4th 00:17:51.00\00:17:53.57 that lasted for 13 and half hours 00:17:53.60\00:17:56.57 and was instructed to share this vision with others. 00:17:56.60\00:17:59.91 William Foy was hesitant to go public 00:18:07.18\00:18:09.25 due to the large amount of prejudice 00:18:09.28\00:18:11.02 he would receive as an African-American 00:18:11.05\00:18:12.85 during this period of America's history. 00:18:12.89\00:18:15.09 Yet when he received an invitation 00:18:15.12\00:18:16.69 to speak in a church 00:18:16.73\00:18:18.06 and share his vision, he agreed. 00:18:18.09\00:18:20.06 The church gladly heard his message 00:18:20.10\00:18:22.13 and he soon got invitations over the next three months 00:18:22.16\00:18:24.87 to speak in churches of all different denominations. 00:18:24.90\00:18:28.64 William Foy served faithfully as a prophet 00:18:28.67\00:18:31.27 in the pre-great disappointment period. 00:18:31.31\00:18:34.08 He never said that his gift would extend 00:18:34.11\00:18:35.98 for a long time 00:18:36.01\00:18:37.35 or that he would receive more visions. 00:18:37.38\00:18:39.51 The evidence seems to suggest 00:18:39.55\00:18:41.68 that he'd received a specific message 00:18:41.72\00:18:43.69 for a specific time 00:18:43.72\00:18:45.32 and that he faithfully fulfilled this task. 00:18:45.35\00:18:48.09 The second man to receive visions 00:18:54.70\00:18:56.46 was named Hazen Foss. 00:18:56.50\00:18:58.57 In January of 1845, 00:18:58.60\00:19:00.94 he met Ellen White and told her his story. 00:19:00.97\00:19:03.97 Shortly after she received her first vision, 00:19:04.01\00:19:06.41 he received the exact same vision 00:19:06.44\00:19:08.81 and was instructed to tell others 00:19:08.84\00:19:10.51 about it yet he didn't. 00:19:10.55\00:19:12.58 Still upset after the great disappointment 00:19:12.61\00:19:14.92 of 1844 and possibly not wanting 00:19:14.95\00:19:18.02 to open himself to ridicule, he refused. 00:19:18.05\00:19:21.29 The Lord came to him and told him that 00:19:21.32\00:19:23.66 he would have another opportunity, 00:19:23.69\00:19:25.56 yet if he still refused the gift would be given 00:19:25.59\00:19:28.10 to somebody else. 00:19:28.13\00:19:29.73 Even with such a warning, 00:19:29.76\00:19:31.67 he manifested a recalcitrant 00:19:31.70\00:19:33.94 and rebellious attitude 00:19:33.97\00:19:35.40 and did not share and a strange feeling 00:19:35.44\00:19:38.31 came over him and he heard a voice say, 00:19:38.34\00:19:41.11 "You have grieved away the Spirit of God." 00:19:41.14\00:19:44.01 Frightened and horrified, 00:19:51.72\00:19:53.36 he decided he would share the vision 00:19:53.39\00:19:55.29 and called a meeting of the Advent believers, 00:19:55.32\00:19:58.16 he explained to those present what had happened 00:19:58.19\00:20:00.96 but when it came time to share the vision, 00:20:01.00\00:20:03.26 he couldn't remember any of it, not even a single word. 00:20:03.30\00:20:07.64 Those present later described it 00:20:07.67\00:20:09.40 as a most horrible and sobering scene. 00:20:09.44\00:20:12.81 As he spoke to Ellen White, 00:20:12.84\00:20:14.61 he implored her to be faithful to the gift 00:20:14.64\00:20:17.25 that God had given her 00:20:17.28\00:20:18.91 and lamented himself as a lost man. 00:20:18.95\00:20:21.82 He would live till his 70s and lies buried here, 00:20:21.85\00:20:25.29 but in his life he would never show 00:20:25.32\00:20:27.19 any more spiritual interest again. 00:20:27.22\00:20:30.06 Here in East Sullivan in Northern Maine, 00:20:37.87\00:20:41.17 we have the grave of William Foy. 00:20:41.20\00:20:43.61 And so, we have the story of two men, 00:20:43.64\00:20:46.21 one obedient to the call of God 00:20:46.24\00:20:48.64 and one resistant to the call of God, 00:20:48.68\00:20:51.28 the best time to follow God, 00:20:51.31\00:20:53.28 the best time to follow His plan 00:20:53.31\00:20:55.32 for our lives is always the earliest time. 00:20:55.35\00:20:59.35 It is never good to delay, 00:20:59.39\00:21:01.46 to debate or to barter with God. 00:21:01.49\00:21:04.79 If God is calling you to ministry, 00:21:04.83\00:21:07.30 harden not your heart, follow the Lord 00:21:07.33\00:21:09.96 and share the message wherever He leads. 00:21:10.00\00:21:12.93 Rachel Oakes was attending this church here 00:21:47.24\00:21:49.77 in Washington, New Hampshire, one particular Sunday 00:21:49.80\00:21:52.91 as she was visiting her daughter Delight 00:21:52.94\00:21:55.18 when the circuit riding preacher 00:21:55.21\00:21:57.08 who came to town was Frederick Wheeler. 00:21:57.11\00:21:59.88 That particular Sunday it was communion 00:21:59.91\00:22:02.35 and as the speaker spoke, 00:22:02.38\00:22:04.09 he spoke how we ought to be 00:22:04.12\00:22:05.49 willing to follow Christ all the way, 00:22:05.52\00:22:07.99 how we needed to obey God and keep His commandments. 00:22:08.02\00:22:11.53 Rachel Oakes was a woman of conviction 00:22:11.56\00:22:14.10 and as she heard these words, 00:22:14.13\00:22:15.73 she decided to speak to him afterwards. 00:22:15.76\00:22:18.77 She later said that she wanted to stand up 00:22:18.80\00:22:21.67 in the middle of the message, 00:22:21.70\00:22:23.24 but she refrained from such a public spectacle. 00:22:23.27\00:22:26.78 My brother, you'd do better 00:22:32.78\00:22:34.72 to set that communion table back against the wall 00:22:34.75\00:22:37.42 and cover it with a white cloth 00:22:37.45\00:22:39.59 until you're willing to keep all the commandments of God. 00:22:39.62\00:22:42.92 You see, Rachel Oakes was a Seventh-day Baptist 00:22:42.96\00:22:45.59 and she felt strongly about this subject 00:22:45.63\00:22:48.16 and admonished Frederick Wheeler 00:22:48.20\00:22:49.93 that he ought to follow God all the way. 00:22:49.96\00:22:52.83 Wheeler later stated that her words cut deep 00:22:52.87\00:22:56.40 and they sent him straight back 00:22:56.44\00:22:57.91 to the Bible to study the subject for himself. 00:22:57.94\00:23:01.01 This was a turning point in his life 00:23:01.04\00:23:03.11 and he was convicted 00:23:03.14\00:23:04.48 on the Sabbath and saw it as binding. 00:23:04.51\00:23:07.35 This event would actually happen 00:23:14.22\00:23:16.02 before the great disappointment of October the 22nd, 1844 00:23:16.06\00:23:21.03 and the big issue at that time 00:23:21.06\00:23:23.06 was the imminent return of Jesus 00:23:23.10\00:23:24.90 rather than the Sabbath. 00:23:24.93\00:23:26.74 This would soon change though. 00:23:26.77\00:23:29.14 Rachel Preston lived the rest of her life in Vernon, Vermont 00:23:36.85\00:23:40.25 in an area rich in history.
