Welcome to "Reverse Diabetes Naturally." 00:00:28.49\00:00:30.86 I'm Doctor David DeRose, 00:00:30.89\00:00:32.79 president of Compass Health Consulting, 00:00:32.83\00:00:35.23 and your host for this exciting journey. 00:00:35.26\00:00:38.50 It's the simple things you can do 00:00:38.53\00:00:40.47 to make a difference with diabetes. 00:00:40.50\00:00:43.14 You might even be wondering, 00:00:43.17\00:00:45.27 "Why speak about diabetes? 00:00:45.31\00:00:47.88 How important is it?" 00:00:47.91\00:00:49.74 If you've tuned into this episode, 00:00:49.78\00:00:53.62 you're thinking about this condition. 00:00:53.65\00:00:56.02 Diabetes is one of the leading 00:00:56.05\00:00:59.09 metabolic conditions in the world. 00:00:59.12\00:01:02.99 If you look at the statistics, diabetes 00:01:03.02\00:01:05.26 is one of America s great epidemics. 00:01:05.29\00:01:07.96 It's largely due to rising numbers of individuals 00:01:07.96\00:01:11.40 with what we call type 2 diabetes. 00:01:11.43\00:01:13.90 Let's stop right here and 00:01:13.94\00:01:15.54 give a few definitions. 00:01:15.57\00:01:17.27 When I was in medical school, 00:01:17.31\00:01:20.28 there was no such thing as type 1 and 00:01:20.31\00:01:22.41 type 2 diabetes. 00:01:22.44\00:01:23.75 We spoke about children, and juvenile diabetes. 00:01:23.78\00:01:28.05 Heavy adults had adult-onset diabetes. 00:01:28.08\00:01:34.09 Those terms became 00:01:34.12\00:01:38.36 confusing when we started finding 00:01:38.39\00:01:42.86 young people with what looked very much like 00:01:42.90\00:01:46.57 the same type of diabetes seen in adulthood. 00:01:46.60\00:01:49.50 The name type 2 diabetes was assigned. 00:01:49.54\00:01:52.91 to the type of diabetes that occurs 00:01:52.94\00:01:56.08 as a result of insulin resistance. 00:01:56.11\00:01:59.45 This is insulin not working the way it should in the body. 00:01:59.48\00:02:02.38 We'll speak more about that soon. 00:02:02.42\00:02:05.22 On the other hand, juvenile diabetes 00:02:05.25\00:02:08.32 was given the designation "type 1 diabetes." 00:02:08.36\00:02:11.49 This is typically an autoimmune process typically. 00:02:11.53\00:02:16.10 The body is attacking itself. In this case, 00:02:16.13\00:02:19.57 It's attacking the islet (or beta) cells, the 00:02:19.60\00:02:23.07 producing cells in the pancreas 00:02:23.10\00:02:25.84 that make insulin. 00:02:25.87\00:02:28.18 Type 1 diabetes can occur in adulthood, though uncommon. 00:02:28.21\00:02:32.08 What we're seeing today is an epidemic 00:02:32.11\00:02:35.15 in the Western world (and the United States), 00:02:35.18\00:02:37.92 driven by diabetes of the type 2 variety. 00:02:37.95\00:02:43.39 If you look at how 00:02:43.43\00:02:46.23 broad the scope of the epidemic is, it's staggering. 00:02:46.26\00:02:50.37 Some 25 million Americans have the condition. 00:02:50.40\00:02:53.57 That amounts to 8 percent to the population. 00:02:53.60\00:02:56.64 This represents a 26 percent increase 00:02:56.67\00:03:00.54 from 2005. Seven million of those individuals 00:03:00.58\00:03:06.65 are undiagnosed. 00:03:06.68\00:03:10.25 How would we know how many are undiagnosed? 00:03:10.29\00:03:15.32 It's simply based on population data. 00:03:15.36\00:03:18.53 Experts will do a screening event in a region. 00:03:18.56\00:03:23.73 They'll find that there are "X" number of people 00:03:23.77\00:03:27.04 who have diabetes and didn't know it. 00:03:27.07\00:03:29.30 What that amounts to is about 00:03:29.34\00:03:30.84 27 to 30 percent who have diabetes 00:03:30.87\00:03:35.04 are unaware that they have the condition. 00:03:35.08\00:03:37.88 If you look at it in other ways, 00:03:37.91\00:03:40.22 roughly 11 percent of Americans over 20 have diabetes. 00:03:40.25\00:03:44.59 By the time we get to the age of 65, 00:03:44.62\00:03:47.79 over one-quarter of the US population 00:03:47.82\00:03:51.09 has diabetes. As for the impact of diabetes, 00:03:51.13\00:03:55.86 There are different ways to calculate death 00:03:55.90\00:03:58.93 statistics in the United States. 00:03:58.97\00:04:01.60 One way calls it the seventh leading cause of death. 00:04:01.64\00:04:07.64 At any given age, people with diabetes 00:04:07.68\00:04:10.65 are about twice as likely to die 00:04:10.68\00:04:13.98 as people who don't have the condition. 00:04:14.02\00:04:17.29 There's a human cost that transcends the numbers. 00:04:17.32\00:04:23.86 Even if someone does not die from diabetes, 00:04:23.89\00:04:28.20 they're likely to have serious complications. 00:04:28.23\00:04:30.90 This affects their ability 00:04:30.93\00:04:32.50 to live and have a high-quality 00:04:32.53\00:04:36.07 existence from day to day. 00:04:36.10\00:04:38.34 The most common diabetic complication 00:04:38.37\00:04:41.01 is nerve damage, known as diabetic neuropathy. 00:04:41.04\00:04:45.41 Sixty to seventy percent of diabetics 00:04:45.45\00:04:48.22 have mild to severe forms of nerve damage. 00:04:48.25\00:04:51.79 This can influence sensation 00:04:51.82\00:04:55.99 in the hands and feet. You might ask, 00:04:56.02\00:04:59.16 "What difference does it make?" 00:04:59.19\00:05:02.40 It makes a huge difference. 00:05:02.43\00:05:04.13 One of the big problems with 00:05:04.17\00:05:06.27 loss of foot sensation is increased risk 00:05:06.30\00:05:09.84 of foot damage. 00:05:09.87\00:05:11.71 I'm thinking of things that sound innocuous, 00:05:11.74\00:05:17.21 like a little sore on your foot. 00:05:17.25\00:05:19.15 A sore that you're unaware of can grow. 00:05:19.18\00:05:22.95 With diabetes, healing is impaired. 00:05:22.98\00:05:26.05 A little sore, 00:05:26.09\00:05:27.69 something that seems insignificant, 00:05:27.72\00:05:30.09 sets the stage for foot and leg amputations. 00:05:30.13\00:05:34.50 Other things caused by diabetic neuropathy include 00:05:34.56\00:05:38.33 digestive problems. 00:05:38.37\00:05:39.63 Your digestive system is controlled by 00:05:39.67\00:05:43.67 nervous system input 00:05:43.71\00:05:45.21 from the brain, and also from the autonomic, or 00:05:45.24\00:05:48.28 automatic nervous system. 00:05:48.31\00:05:50.88 When that's not functioning properly, 00:05:50.91\00:05:53.45 you can have digestive problems. 00:05:53.48\00:05:55.82 These nerve-related problems may not seem significant 00:05:55.85\00:06:00.86 if you're not dealing with them. 00:06:00.89\00:06:02.29 I've had patients who couldn't work 00:06:02.32\00:06:04.73 because of burning pain in their legs. 00:06:04.76\00:06:07.50 I've had patients who could not sleep 00:06:07.56\00:06:09.96 because of severe 00:06:10.00\00:06:11.40 diabetic neuropathy symptoms. It's not just loss of sensation, 00:06:11.43\00:06:15.24 it's abnormal sensation as well. 00:06:15.27\00:06:17.41 Let's come back 00:06:17.44\00:06:18.77 to that sensation equation and connection with amputations. 00:06:18.81\00:06:22.81 Are you aware that some 60,000 00:06:22.84\00:06:24.61 to 80,000 amputations 00:06:24.65\00:06:27.25 occur each year in the United States 00:06:27.28\00:06:29.42 because of diabetes alone? 00:06:29.45\00:06:31.19 About 60 percent 00:06:31.22\00:06:33.96 of non-traumatic, lower-limb amputations 00:06:33.99\00:06:37.66 are caused by diabetes. 00:06:37.69\00:06:42.00 Nerve problems affect quality of life, but so can vision. 00:06:42.03\00:06:46.20 If you look at the leading cause of blindness 00:06:46.23\00:06:49.20 among adults 20 to 74 years of age, 00:06:49.24\00:06:51.74 you are looking diabetes square in the face. 00:06:51.77\00:06:55.28 Some 12,000 to 24,000 cases of blindness 00:06:55.31\00:06:59.48 each year in America are from diabetes. 00:06:59.51\00:07:03.32 Diabetes causes damage to small blood vessels. 00:07:03.35\00:07:06.89 If those blood vessels are in the back of the eye, 00:07:06.92\00:07:09.79 you'll get something called diabetic 00:07:09.82\00:07:11.86 retinopathy. Some 4.2 million 00:07:11.89\00:07:16.30 Americans with diabetes over the age of 40 00:07:16.33\00:07:19.80 have significant diabetic neuropathy. 00:07:19.83\00:07:23.87 Two-thirds to three-quarters of a million people 00:07:23.91\00:07:28.61 actually have retinopathy so bad 00:07:28.64\00:07:31.78 that they are at risk of severe vision loss. 00:07:31.81\00:07:36.52 The good news is simply this: 00:07:36.55\00:07:40.89 diabetic complications can be reversed. 00:07:40.92\00:07:44.79 I have seen people with diabetic neuropathy 00:07:44.83\00:07:48.00 have their neuropathic symptoms improve. 00:07:48.03\00:07:51.90 I've seen people with diabetic 00:07:51.93\00:07:53.84 retinopathy dramatically improve. 00:07:53.87\00:07:57.27 Even with diabetic nephropathy 00:07:57.31\00:08:00.28 (kidney problems), there is some evidence 00:08:00.31\00:08:03.58 you can slow the progression, maybe reverse it. 00:08:03.61\00:08:06.88 How do you do it? 00:08:06.92\00:08:08.62 That's what we'll talk about in this presentation. 00:08:08.65\00:08:11.42 We're talking about reversing diabetes 00:08:11.45\00:08:14.79 naturally. I'll be honest with you. 00:08:14.82\00:08:18.23 The foundation is lifestyle. Lifestyle practices 00:08:18.26\00:08:25.23 are powerful in reversing this disease. 00:08:25.27\00:08:28.50 If you've tuned into our other presentations 00:08:28.54\00:08:31.91 in the LifeStart series, you'll recall a powerful 00:08:31.94\00:08:35.74 mnemonic (a memory device), which is 00:08:35.78\00:08:39.31 technically called an acronym. It helps us remember 00:08:39.35\00:08:42.95 nine natural therapies or strategies 00:08:42.98\00:08:47.76 that can help reverse disease processes. 00:08:47.79\00:08:50.99 Diabetes is included on that list. 00:08:51.03\00:08:53.66 Before we go any further 00:08:53.70\00:08:55.33 speaking about diabetes, its reversibility and strategies, 00:08:55.36\00:08:58.77 I want you to see the big picture-- 00:08:58.80\00:09:01.84 LifeStart. Let me walk you through the elements. 00:09:01.87\00:09:06.21 The "L" stands for Liquids. 00:09:06.24\00:09:08.14 Our choice of beverages 00:09:08.18\00:09:09.81 has a role in diabetes 00:09:09.84\00:09:12.25 (whether we develop it, 00:09:12.28\00:09:13.75 have it, and how well it's controlled). 00:09:13.78\00:09:16.65 Liquids are important in diabetes. 00:09:16.69\00:09:19.92 The "I" stands for Interpersonal Relationships. 00:09:19.95\00:09:24.29 Being connected with others is a powerful, 00:09:24.33\00:09:27.40 health-giving factor. It can help you 00:09:27.40\00:09:31.47 with your diabetes. If you have social support, 00:09:31.50\00:09:34.44 if you're socially connected with people, 00:09:34.47\00:09:36.40 you will actually do better with this condition. 00:09:36.44\00:09:39.87 The "F" stands for Foods. 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.88 We'll take a look at what dietary choices 00:09:41.91\00:09:45.08 are most important for reversing diabetes 00:09:45.11\00:09:48.88 naturally. Then we have the "E." 00:09:48.92\00:09:51.62 "E" stands for Exercise, of vital importance 00:09:51.65\00:09:55.39 as we're dealing with the diabetic state. 00:09:55.42\00:09:58.73 This is LifeStart: L-I-F-E . . . 00:09:58.76\00:10:02.23 "S" is for Sunshine. 00:10:02.26\00:10:04.57 Let me tell you something about sunshine. 00:10:04.60\00:10:06.43 We're not going to speak all that much about it. 00:10:06.47\00:10:10.14 Vitamin D is important in 00:10:10.17\00:10:13.24 helping the immune system function optimally. 00:10:13.27\00:10:16.24 One of the places in the world that 00:10:16.28\00:10:18.28 is challenged when it comes to sunshine is Scandinavia. 00:10:18.31\00:10:21.92 Some years ago, they started giving children 00:10:21.95\00:10:25.45 supplements of vitamin D. What they found 00:10:25.49\00:10:29.36 is a dramatic decrease of type 1 diabetes. 00:10:29.39\00:10:36.13 If you are making this connection, 00:10:36.16\00:10:38.40 auto immunity, type 1 diabetes, and vitamin D 00:10:38.43\00:10:43.30 have a role. Sunlight is best way to make vitamin D. 00:10:43.34\00:10:48.78 If you live in Scandinavia or are stationed 00:10:48.81\00:10:52.58 in Antarctica, you're not getting much sunshine 00:10:52.61\00:10:56.45 during the winter months. 00:10:56.48\00:10:57.99 You need to take a vitamin D supplement. 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.42 Let's move on with the LifeStart acronym. 00:11:00.46\00:11:03.59 "T" stands for Temperance. 00:11:03.63\00:11:05.73 This is the concept of doing good things in moderation, 00:11:05.76\00:11:09.03 totally avoiding those things that are harmful. 00:11:09.06\00:11:12.60 We'll speak about that to some extent. 00:11:12.63\00:11:15.90 "A" is for Air--fresh air. 00:11:15.94\00:11:18.47 I've spoken about this in other settings. 00:11:18.51\00:11:21.44 The biggest pollutant, as human health consequences, 00:11:21.48\00:11:25.75 is nothing that any factory does. 00:11:25.78\00:11:28.52 It is cigarette smoke. 00:11:28.55\00:11:30.35 If you're a smoker, you're exposing your body 00:11:30.39\00:11:33.29 to chemicals that are actually impairing 00:11:33.32\00:11:36.79 your entire metabolic picture. 00:11:36.83\00:11:39.29 Diabetes is among the risk factors 00:11:39.33\00:11:42.63 of individuals who smoke. There's increased risk 00:11:42.66\00:11:45.33 of that condition. There's a few more elements in the 00:11:45.37\00:11:50.14 acronym. We'll come back and 00:11:50.17\00:11:51.54 give you a bigger picture we've talked about "LIFE." 00:11:51.57\00:11:55.81 We've talked about S-T-A . . . 00:11:55.84\00:11:59.58 "R" is for Rest. 00:11:59.61\00:12:02.12 If you're cutting yourself short on sleep, 00:12:02.15\00:12:06.45 you ramp up your stress hormone levels. 00:12:06.49\00:12:09.52 As stress hormone levels go up, 00:12:09.56\00:12:13.03 so do blood sugars. Higher stress 00:12:13.06\00:12:16.20 puts you in a state predisposed to diabetes. 00:12:16.23\00:12:19.67 I have seen patients 00:12:19.70\00:12:21.97 with diabetes, their main risk factor 00:12:22.00\00:12:24.64 undiagnosed. It was sleep apnea. 00:12:24.67\00:12:28.18 If you have a problem with snoring 00:12:28.21\00:12:32.01 and you actually stop breathing at night, 00:12:32.05\00:12:35.65 have someone observe you. 00:12:35.68\00:12:37.52 If you stop breathing at night, this is 00:12:37.55\00:12:39.42 a hallmark of sleep apnea. "A" means "without," and 00:12:39.45\00:12:47.40 "PNEA" refers to breathing. 00:12:47.40\00:12:49.80 When you stop breathing 00:12:49.83\00:12:51.73 multiple times at night, 00:12:51.77\00:12:53.87 that's the characteristic of that sleep apnea state. 00:12:53.90\00:12:57.47 Your brain is arousing 00:12:57.51\00:13:00.41 multiple times through the night. You may not wake up, 00:13:00.44\00:13:03.41 but your sleep is interrupted. 00:13:03.45\00:13:05.18 Stress hormone levels are higher. 00:13:05.21\00:13:07.15 That in itself can set the stage for diabetes. 00:13:07.18\00:13:10.82 Adequate rest is important. That's just one illustration. 00:13:10.85\00:13:13.89 The last point that I'd like to talk about is 00:13:13.92\00:13:17.03 Trust in Divine Power. 00:13:17.06\00:13:18.69 It's the last point I like to talk about. 00:13:18.73\00:13:21.36 There was a time in my life when I thought there 00:13:21.40\00:13:25.80 was no spiritual being that 00:13:25.83\00:13:28.67 was willing to guide us and help us. 00:13:28.70\00:13:30.37 As a physician, I realize this is important today. 00:13:30.41\00:13:33.64 I've seen my patients get significant help, realizing 00:13:33.68\00:13:37.05 there is a loving Creator. 00:13:37.08\00:13:39.01 He wants to aid them in lifestyle change. 00:13:39.05\00:13:41.58 That's not what you believe? 00:13:41.62\00:13:44.32 I've got nothing to urge. I'm just saying that 00:13:44.35\00:13:46.82 spirituality has powerful health-giving benefits, 00:13:46.86\00:13:50.16 especially in the area of lifestyle change. 00:13:50.19\00:13:51.93 That's the focus 00:13:51.96\00:13:53.06 of LifeStart. We want to help you change things 00:13:53.09\00:13:55.73 that will help (at least in this case) reverse diabetes. 00:13:55.76\00:13:58.90 With that background, 00:13:58.93\00:14:00.94 let me extend the dialogue just a little bit. 00:14:00.97\00:14:03.51 Some of you tuning in 00:14:03.54\00:14:05.11 may say, "I don't have diabetes. Why am I watching this?" 00:14:05.14\00:14:08.74 You need to be concerned. 00:14:08.78\00:14:10.11 Everyone needs to be concerned about diabetes. 00:14:10.15\00:14:12.61 Let me tell you two reasons why. 00:14:12.65\00:14:14.42 Even if you don't have diabetes today, 00:14:14.45\00:14:16.58 there's a likelihood you have what's called pre-diabetes. 00:14:16.62\00:14:22.99 Pre-diabetes is a state 00:14:23.02\00:14:25.29 before you develop diabetes .You have higher 00:14:25.33\00:14:27.86 blood sugars than optimal, 00:14:27.86\00:14:29.43 but have not reached the criteria for diabetes. 00:14:29.46\00:14:32.60 Let me illustrate that with fasting blood sugar. 00:14:32.63\00:14:35.60 If your fasting blood sugar is below 100, 00:14:35.64\00:14:38.81 most people consider that normal. 00:14:38.84\00:14:41.21 I actually consider "normal" below 80. 00:14:41.24\00:14:43.81 Between 81 and 99 00:14:43.85\00:14:47.48 is what I consider "higher normal." 00:14:47.52\00:14:49.98 Once you get to 100, everyone feels this is abnormal. 00:14:50.02\00:14:53.29 "Impaired fasting glucose" was the term used for years. 00:14:53.32\00:14:59.43 That didn't stick with lay people, so we 00:14:59.46\00:15:02.63 switched to the term "pre-diabetes." 00:15:02.66\00:15:05.20 If you're in the range of 100 to 125 for 00:15:05.23\00:15:08.27 fasting blood sugar (when you wake up), 00:15:08.30\00:15:11.31 then you have pre-diabetes. 00:15:11.34\00:15:13.01 if your blood sugars are 126 and above, 00:15:13.04\00:15:16.54 that meets the definition of diabetes. 00:15:16.58\00:15:19.15 There's also criteria for blood sugar, 00:15:19.18\00:15:21.12 two hours after a meal, 00:15:21.15\00:15:22.55 where you could also be pre-diabetic. 00:15:22.58\00:15:25.82 If you want more information, we have 00:15:25.85\00:15:27.49 some additional details 00:15:27.52\00:15:29.02 in our free resources. 00:15:29.06\00:15:30.63 We have a study guide that goes along with this. 00:15:30.66\00:15:33.16 You can access that at lifestartseminars.com. 00:15:33.19\00:15:37.57 Maybe I went through that 00:15:37.60\00:15:39.57 LifeStart acronym too quickly. Even if 00:15:39.60\00:15:44.11 it was the right pace but want more information, 00:15:44.14\00:15:47.34 you can get a free e book 00:15:47.38\00:15:50.68 at lifestartseminars.com. 00:15:50.71\00:15:53.98 Let's talk about why you need 00:15:54.02\00:15:56.58 to be concerned if you've got pre-diabetes. 00:15:56.62\00:15:58.72 You may not even be aware of it. 00:15:58.75\00:16:00.29 Pre-diabetes actually affects some 25 to 00:16:00.32\00:16:03.93 35 percent of the US population. 00:16:03.96\00:16:07.50 As we get into our are sixties and beyond, 00:16:07.50\00:16:10.53 you're talking about half the population with pre-diabetes. 00:16:10.57\00:16:14.84 We need to be concerned about this. 00:16:14.87\00:16:17.77 The message is simply this: 00:16:17.81\00:16:19.27 with the LifeStart principles, 00:16:19.31\00:16:21.11 you can reverse the pre-diabetic state. 00:16:21.14\00:16:24.51 In fact, the research indicates that 00:16:24.55\00:16:27.75 two of those LifeStart principles 00:16:27.78\00:16:30.39 (more than any other) are especially powerful 00:16:30.42\00:16:33.22 in reversing the pre-diabetic state. 00:16:33.25\00:16:36.29 It was looked at within the Diabetes Prevention Program. 00:16:36.32\00:16:39.96 What was found involves one element of LifeStart, Exercise. 00:16:40.00\00:16:44.77 Thirty minutes a day of moderate, physical exercise 00:16:44.80\00:16:49.07 was combined with the "F" and 00:16:49.10\00:16:52.71 the "L" (the liquids in the foods). 00:16:52.74\00:16:54.84 That's where we get our calories. 00:16:54.88\00:16:56.75 The focus was on helping people lose 5 to 10 percent 00:16:56.78\00:17:01.02 of their body weight. 00:17:01.05\00:17:03.72 Think about this now. 00:17:03.75\00:17:05.72 If you weigh 200 pounds and you're 5'2", 00:17:05.75\00:17:08.62 your ideal weight may be 00:17:08.66\00:17:10.56 as high as a 120 pounds. 00:17:10.59\00:17:12.33 You're a young lady at 200 pounds, saying, 00:17:12.36\00:17:15.36 "I've got to lose 80 pounds." You don't have 00:17:15.40\00:17:18.33 to lose the whole 80 pounds to get benefit. At 00:17:18.37\00:17:20.44 200 pounds, a 5 percent weight loss 00:17:20.47\00:17:23.27 would be 10 pounds. 00:17:23.30\00:17:26.64 You drop those 10 pounds, 00:17:26.68\00:17:29.01 combined with 30 minutes of exercise daily. 00:17:29.04\00:17:36.05 You've made some dietary changes as well. 00:17:36.08\00:17:38.32 Maybe you left off the soft drinks. 00:17:38.35\00:17:40.36 If I want to talk about one thing, I'll do it now. 00:17:40.39\00:17:45.46 If you want to look and a cause of diabetes, 00:17:45.49\00:17:49.63 many researchers point fingers at soft drinks. 00:17:49.66\00:17:53.37 There's high fructose corn syrup and 00:17:53.40\00:17:57.31 concentrated calories in those beverages. 00:17:57.34\00:17:59.84 If you leave those things off, 00:17:59.87\00:18:01.91 you can get a tremendous aid to 00:18:01.94\00:18:03.61 losing weight. If you lose weight, 00:18:03.65\00:18:05.41 it's going to help whether you have diabetes, 00:18:05.45\00:18:07.35 pre-diabetes, or simply at risk for diabetes 00:18:07.38\00:18:13.42 without having pre-diabetes. 00:18:13.46\00:18:15.79 Focus on things like water 00:18:15.82\00:18:18.43 as a beverage (zero calories in water). 00:18:18.46\00:18:21.23 Stay away from soft drinks, especially those 00:18:21.26\00:18:25.90 sweetened with caloric sweeteners. 00:18:25.93\00:18:29.04 Since we're talking about it, 00:18:29.07\00:18:32.11 I'll go one step further. 00:18:32.14\00:18:34.14 Artificial sweeteners, those zero-calorie soft drinks, 00:18:34.18\00:18:37.78 are not your friend, either. Research indicates 00:18:37.81\00:18:40.92 that some consume more calories 00:18:40.95\00:18:44.45 after drinking them. 00:18:44.49\00:18:46.19 On top with that, it's 00:18:46.22\00:18:48.22 cultivating that same sweet tooth that got you 00:18:48.26\00:18:51.16 into the problem you have to begin with. 00:18:51.19\00:18:53.60 If you want more information about 00:18:53.63\00:18:55.33 behavioral change, 00:18:55.36\00:18:57.10 we've got resources 00:18:57.13\00:18:58.67 on the LifeStart website. One I'd recommend 00:18:58.70\00:19:01.10 is my DVD "Changing Bad Habits for Good." 00:19:01.14\00:19:04.94 It speaks about these principles. Making clean breaks 00:19:04.97\00:19:08.81 with bad habits is so powerful. We need to 00:19:08.84\00:19:12.88 make sure we get the whole 00:19:12.91\00:19:14.08 picture with pre-diabetes. 00:19:14.12\00:19:15.82 In the Diabetes Prevention Program, 00:19:15.85\00:19:18.12 30 minutes of exercise a day and 00:19:18.15\00:19:20.19 moderate physical activity meant 00:19:20.22\00:19:22.26 a 5 to 10 percent weight loss. 00:19:22.29\00:19:24.96 It led to a 58 percent 00:19:24.99\00:19:28.33 decreased risk of developing diabetes. 00:19:28.36\00:19:31.03 This is powerful. 00:19:31.07\00:19:32.53 You can keep diabetes from ever coming 00:19:32.57\00:19:36.34 into your household by simply 00:19:36.37\00:19:38.81 following the LifeStart principles. 00:19:38.84\00:19:40.54 Two of the most important are foods 00:19:40.58\00:19:44.65 and exercise. Don't forget liquids, often 00:19:44.68\00:19:48.38 a significant source of calories. 00:19:48.42\00:19:51.89 Let's hasten on at this point and mention 00:19:51.92\00:19:54.22 one other important group that needs concern. 00:19:54.26\00:19:57.29 if you have a family history of diabetes, 00:19:57.33\00:20:01.36 you are an individual who should be concerned. 00:20:01.40\00:20:06.40 If you don't have a family history, 00:20:06.43\00:20:08.64 carrying extra weight and inactive, 00:20:08.67\00:20:11.47 these are risk factors for type 2 diabetes. 00:20:11.51\00:20:14.48 We're trying to encourage you to simply 00:20:14.51\00:20:17.88 catch the message and grab lifestyle. 00:20:17.91\00:20:21.05 Hold on, however you grab it, 00:20:21.08\00:20:24.72 and say, "I'm going to make these LifeStart 00:20:24.75\00:20:27.12 changes, so that I'm not affected by diabetes." 00:20:27.16\00:20:31.73 Let me just make one other point. 00:20:31.76\00:20:33.90 There are some people 00:20:33.93\00:20:35.70 who have been genetically gifted with a 00:20:35.73\00:20:39.50 very good pancreas. 00:20:39.53\00:20:42.00 Their pancreas is good, no matter the insulin resistance. 00:20:42.04\00:20:46.74 No matter how difficult it is for insulin to do its job, 00:20:46.78\00:20:51.01 the pancreas produces more insulin. 00:20:51.05\00:20:53.45 They will never develop diabetes. 00:20:53.48\00:20:55.45 The problem is, if you're not 00:20:55.48\00:20:57.39 following these LifeStart principles, 00:20:57.42\00:21:00.09 you'll have more insulin resistance. 00:21:00.12\00:21:03.39 Insulin is not going to work as it should. 00:21:03.43\00:21:05.33 Your pancreas ramps up insulin production, 00:21:05.36\00:21:09.83 and you never get diabetes. 00:21:09.86\00:21:11.90 Just because you never develop diabetes, 00:21:11.93\00:21:14.20 that doesn't mean there aren't problems. 00:21:14.24\00:21:17.41 Insulin resistance, even without diabetes, 00:21:17.44\00:21:20.94 tends to lower good cholesterol. 00:21:20.98\00:21:23.24 The HDL goes down. 00:21:23.28\00:21:25.01 Bad cholesterol (the LDL) becomes more damaging. 00:21:25.05\00:21:28.75 Another bad blood fat, triglycerides, rises. 00:21:28.78\00:21:32.19 Are you hearing this? 00:21:32.22\00:21:33.36 If you have problems with your blood fats, 00:21:33.39\00:21:36.59 it may result be the result 00:21:36.62\00:21:39.46 of insulin resistance. 00:21:39.49\00:21:41.80 All of us need to be concerned about 00:21:41.83\00:21:46.80 this very important epidemic 00:21:46.84\00:21:49.20 affecting Americans. 00:21:49.24\00:21:51.97 Whether we have diabetes, pre-diabetes, 00:21:52.01\00:21:55.51 or are in danger of developing diabetes, 00:21:55.54\00:22:02.42 we need to be concerned. 00:22:02.45\00:22:04.42 The insulin-resistant state 00:22:04.45\00:22:06.99 really sets us up 00:22:07.02\00:22:10.23 for significant problems. 00:22:10.26\00:22:12.53 I want to encourage you 00:22:12.56\00:22:14.23 to catch the important message. 00:22:14.30\00:22:18.07 We need to take action. 00:22:18.10\00:22:20.10 Let's go now to a real 00:22:20.14\00:22:22.00 example of how diabetes, 00:22:22.04\00:22:25.67 insulin resistance, 00:22:25.71\00:22:27.24 and related conditions can be kept at bay. 00:22:27.28\00:22:29.71 We're going to look at a population 00:22:29.74\00:22:32.61 with some of the highest diabetes rates in the world. 00:22:32.65\00:22:36.42 This is where researchers have learned 00:22:36.45\00:22:38.95 the power of lifestyle, perhaps 00:22:38.99\00:22:40.99 as nowhere else. 00:22:41.02\00:22:42.36 Some of you may know I host a 00:22:42.39\00:22:44.16 weekly radio show, "American Indian Living." I work with 00:22:44.19\00:22:47.83 people of Native American ancestry on a regular basis. 00:22:47.86\00:22:51.03 You may not be surprised to know 00:22:51.07\00:22:53.00 that one of the world's most 00:22:53.03\00:22:54.37 diabetic-prone people are of Native American descent. 00:22:54.40\00:22:58.87 The famous Strong Heart Study looked at native Americans. 00:22:58.91\00:23:02.81 It looked at populations of Native Americans 00:23:02.84\00:23:06.68 in three US regions. This was the Dakotas, 00:23:06.72\00:23:09.45 Oklahoma, and Arizona. 00:23:09.48\00:23:11.49 In this study of adults, 00:23:11.52\00:23:14.92 about one-third in the Dakotas had diabetes. 00:23:14.96\00:23:19.86 Forty percent in Oklahoma had the condition. 00:23:19.89\00:23:22.90 Two-thirds of those in Arizona had diabetes. 00:23:22.93\00:23:28.10 Why such staggering rates? 00:23:28.14\00:23:30.17 Is it something just about Native Americans? 00:23:30.21\00:23:32.47 Do they have to have diabetes? 00:23:32.51\00:23:33.94 The evidence says "no." There's 00:23:33.98\00:23:35.88 amazing data from the Gila River Indian Reservation. 00:23:35.91\00:23:39.71 (in the the Phoenix area today). 00:23:39.75\00:23:42.92 At the turn of the century (around 1900), 00:23:42.95\00:23:47.52 we have good data showing only a 00:23:47.56\00:23:49.56 only a single case of diabetes among 4,000 00:23:49.59\00:23:53.03 individuals on that reservation. 00:23:53.06\00:23:55.13 Forty years later, in 21 individuals 00:23:55.16\00:23:58.93 (the population had not changed much) , 00:23:58.97\00:24:03.04 the prevalence of diabetes and the number affected 00:24:03.07\00:24:05.71 dramatically increased twenty fold. 00:24:05.74\00:24:07.78 It was still less than 1 percent 00:24:07.81\00:24:09.61 of the population with diabetes. 00:24:09.64\00:24:11.21 Today, if you go to Gila River 00:24:11.25\00:24:13.38 Indian Reservation and look at those over 35, 00:24:13.42\00:24:16.72 50 percent will have diabetes. 00:24:16.75\00:24:19.02 What this indicates is not a disease 00:24:19.05\00:24:21.39 that is just from genetics. 00:24:21.42\00:24:23.06 Yes, Native Americans in populations like the 00:24:23.09\00:24:25.79 Pimas are genetically predisposed. 00:24:25.83\00:24:29.10 Lifestyle is superimposed. How do we know? 00:24:29.13\00:24:32.43 A wonderful study 00:24:32.47\00:24:34.04 published (in the 90's) in Diabetes Care looked at 00:24:34.07\00:24:37.51 people of Pima ancestry. 00:24:37.54\00:24:39.64 There are pima Indians 00:24:39.67\00:24:41.84 living in Arizona, as well as Mexico. 00:24:41.88\00:24:46.01 We know, by actual genetic measurements, 00:24:46.05\00:24:48.78 historical observations, and language similarities, 00:24:48.82\00:24:52.09 these are cousins. 00:24:52.12\00:24:53.56 What's so fascinating is, these populations live differently. 00:24:53.59\00:24:57.69 Native Americans of Pima ancestry in Arizona 00:24:57.73\00:25:01.56 are less active than their cousins in Mexico. 00:25:01.60\00:25:07.37 It's very physical, active living 00:25:07.40\00:25:09.20 in rural Mexico for Pimas. 00:25:09.24\00:25:11.67 We looked at diet, which is fascinating. 00:25:11.71\00:25:14.78 A high-fiber diet, with 00:25:14.81\00:25:16.21 very little in the way of animal products, 00:25:16.24\00:25:18.71 characterized the diet of those in Mexico. 00:25:18.75\00:25:21.65 There's high animal product intake 00:25:21.68\00:25:24.05 with the Arizona Pimas and 00:25:24.09\00:25:25.29 a lot of animal fat in the diet (over 40 percent 00:25:25.32\00:25:29.42 by some measurements). 00:25:29.46\00:25:30.86 Are you starting to get the picture? 00:25:30.89\00:25:32.39 Two populations, genetically similar, 00:25:32.43\00:25:35.13 have very different lifestyles. Exercise and 00:25:35.16\00:25:38.07 dietary factors differ. 00:25:38.10\00:25:39.67 What do we see when it comes to diabetes? 00:25:39.70\00:25:41.60 Look at the Mexican 00:25:41.64\00:25:44.21 Pima women in that study. 00:25:44.24\00:25:46.47 About 1 in 10 women in their thirties had diabetes. 00:25:46.51\00:25:50.11 It was about 4 times that much 00:25:50.15\00:25:52.48 in the Arizona Pima women. 00:25:52.51\00:25:54.62 Looking at Mexican Pima men in their forties, 00:25:54.65\00:25:58.85 only about 6 percent had diabetes. 00:25:58.89\00:26:01.49 There's nearly 9 times (over 50 percent) 00:26:01.52\00:26:04.93 of the Arizona men with the condition. 00:26:04.96\00:26:07.50 What does this tell us? Lifestyle 00:26:07.50\00:26:11.27 largely drives diabetes. 00:26:11.30\00:26:13.84 As one of my 00:26:13.87\00:26:15.77 endocrinology professors told me, 00:26:15.80\00:26:19.54 Simple practices, as embodied in that 00:26:25.11\00:26:29.35 LifeStart mnemonic, 00:26:29.38\00:26:31.22 can prevent diabetes from occurring. 00:26:31.25\00:26:35.29 Eat less animal fat and 00:26:35.32\00:26:37.63 things lower in caloric density (more 00:26:37.66\00:26:41.13 fruits and vegetables). Eat less animal products. 00:26:41.16\00:26:44.60 Fasting (an application of temperance) 00:26:44.63\00:26:49.14 can be used under medical direction 00:26:49.17\00:26:52.21 to help reset the metabolism 00:26:52.24\00:26:54.34 in people with diabetes. 00:26:54.38\00:26:55.88 Hopefully, I've given you a window 00:26:55.91\00:26:58.68 into how you can reverse the diabetic state. 00:26:58.71\00:27:01.55 Get serious about your diet and exercise. 00:27:01.58\00:27:05.45 Control stress, make sure you're resting. 00:27:05.49\00:27:07.99 In short, that's LifeStart. 00:27:08.02\00:27:10.26 I have a whole four-hour series on 00:27:10.29\00:27:12.63 "Reversing Diabetes Naturally." 00:27:12.66\00:27:14.60 I can't condense it into a 30-minute presentation. 00:27:14.63\00:27:18.10 I'm giving you all the tools you need 00:27:18.13\00:27:20.54 to make dramatic changes in your lifestyle. 00:27:20.57\00:27:22.70 What if you have diabetes, taking medication? 00:27:22.74\00:27:25.61 Before making dramatic changes, talk with your doctor. 00:27:25.64\00:27:28.74 Your insulin needs will change. 00:27:28.78\00:27:30.95 If not insulin, you may be on oral medications 00:27:30.98\00:27:34.08 that need to be readjusted. 00:27:34.12\00:27:36.25 We've got more resources, if you need them. 00:27:36.28\00:27:38.65 We've got a study guide available. 00:27:38.69\00:27:41.62 We've got a more extensive DVD series. 00:27:41.66\00:27:44.53 We've got the program notes and more information 00:27:44.56\00:27:48.86 about other programs that make a difference. 00:27:48.90\00:27:51.93 You won't want to forget that 00:27:51.97\00:27:54.04 we even have personalized help. 00:27:54.07\00:27:56.20 We've got a health coaching program 00:27:56.24\00:27:57.94 on the LifeStart website. 00:27:57.97\00:27:59.57 Tap into it all at lifestartseminars.com. 00:27:59.61\00:28:04.01 From all of us with LifeStart, 00:28:04.05\00:28:05.95 I'm doctor David DeRose, 00:28:05.98\00:28:07.52 wishing you the very best success 00:28:07.55\00:28:10.35 in addressing diabetes 00:28:10.39\00:28:11.95 and its risk factors. 00:28:11.99\00:28:26.97
