Welcome to "Avoid Colds and Flus Naturally." 00:00:28.49\00:00:31.69 I'm Doctor David DeRose, a board-certified 00:00:31.73\00:00:34.56 specialist in internal and preventive medicine. 00:00:34.56\00:00:37.67 I'm here to help you master another 00:00:37.70\00:00:41.94 very important medical subject. I say "another," because 00:00:41.97\00:00:45.74 this is one in a series of presentations called 00:00:45.77\00:00:49.94 LifeStart Seminars. I'm glad to have you with us 00:00:49.98\00:00:54.08 for today's presentation. It was the fall of 00:00:54.12\00:00:58.19 2014, and a contagion was sweeping 00:00:58.22\00:01:02.22 America. The contagion wasn't infectious disease. 00:01:02.26\00:01:06.46 The contagion of fear, the Ebola virus, 00:01:06.49\00:01:10.80 was on American soil, seeming to spread 00:01:10.83\00:01:14.17 indiscriminately. At least, so it appeared. 00:01:14.20\00:01:17.41 The experience caused me 00:01:17.44\00:01:19.57 to write a book, Evading Ebola: 00:01:19.61\00:01:23.51 Decrease Your Risk of Infection, 00:01:23.55\00:01:27.12 Fare Far Better if Exposed. 00:01:27.15\00:01:30.29 At the heart of that book was something 00:01:30.32\00:01:33.39 fundamental about all infectious diseases. 00:01:33.42\00:01:37.33 We can be exposed 00:01:37.36\00:01:39.49 to serious viruses, but can remain unscathed. 00:01:39.53\00:01:45.63 That very theme 00:01:45.67\00:01:47.20 comes front and center as we speak now 00:01:47.24\00:01:50.07 about a more common illness: 00:01:50.11\00:01:53.34 the common cold. There's another common illness: 00:01:53.38\00:01:57.68 influenza (commonly knows it as the flu). 00:01:57.71\00:02:01.55 There was a great irony of the the 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.05 Ebola outbreak of the United States 00:02:04.09\00:02:06.55 and throughout the world 00:02:06.59\00:02:09.49 (at least in United States terms). 00:02:09.52\00:02:11.63 We are surrounded by 00:02:11.66\00:02:13.33 more lethal illnesses that seem to cause us 00:02:13.36\00:02:17.17 relatively little consternation. 00:02:17.20\00:02:19.53 We're speaking especially about colds. 00:02:19.57\00:02:23.00 The viruses that cause them typically 00:02:23.04\00:02:26.07 don't do too much in the way of devastation. 00:02:26.11\00:02:30.51 There are some 200 viruses 00:02:30.55\00:02:32.95 that attack the upper respiratory system. 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.85 If you look at the data, 00:02:35.88\00:02:38.69 we experience (in the United States alone) 00:02:38.72\00:02:40.86 some one billion infections a year. 00:02:40.89\00:02:45.19 You're saying, "One billion! There aren't that many 00:02:45.23\00:02:47.96 people in the United States." 00:02:48.00\00:02:49.50 If you look at children, who are most at risk, 00:02:49.53\00:02:52.33 some are experiencing 6 to 10 (or more) 00:02:52.37\00:02:55.70 episodes of colds per year. 00:02:55.74\00:02:58.94 The average adult may have 2 to 4 colds a year. 00:02:58.97\00:03:02.21 Yes, it hurts our productivity. 00:03:02.24\00:03:05.91 We may be feeling under the weather. Many of us 00:03:05.95\00:03:09.55 seem to just try to fight through it 00:03:09.58\00:03:12.02 and go about our daily lives. 00:03:12.05\00:03:14.76 the problem is, although 00:03:14.79\00:03:17.09 some of the viruses causing the common cold 00:03:17.13\00:03:19.76 are relatively innocuous. Others 00:03:19.79\00:03:22.83 are not so. 00:03:22.86\00:03:24.57 We all know what a cold looks like: 00:03:24.60\00:03:26.60 runny nose, sneezing, sore throat. 00:03:26.63\00:03:28.74 Maybe there's a dry cough, headache or mild fever. 00:03:28.77\00:03:32.44 Typically the symptoms last a 00:03:32.47\00:03:34.04 few days to a week, maybe two. 00:03:34.08\00:03:37.11 That's the common cold. 00:03:37.15\00:03:38.88 An example of one of the viruses causing colds 00:03:38.91\00:03:44.35 are the adenoviruses. This is a family 00:03:44.39\00:03:48.12 of viruses that commonly 00:03:48.16\00:03:51.39 cause the common cold. 00:03:51.43\00:03:53.29 They can do more than that. 00:03:53.33\00:03:54.86 They can cause croup, 00:03:54.93\00:03:56.46 or bronchitis in the lower respiratory tract. 00:03:56.50\00:03:59.90 Adenoviruses can also cause intestinal symptoms. 00:03:59.93\00:04:03.91 They can affect the eyes, the bladder, 00:04:03.94\00:04:06.54 and can even cause neurological disease. 00:04:06.57\00:04:10.55 A cold may seem innocuous. 00:04:10.58\00:04:15.88 If our immune system is unhealthy or compromised, 00:04:15.92\00:04:22.42 a virus that causes the common cold 00:04:22.46\00:04:26.86 can cause devastating effects. If we 00:04:26.90\00:04:30.87 turned to the next viral illness that we're 00:04:30.90\00:04:34.47 bringing under sharp focus in this 00:04:34.50\00:04:37.51 presentation, we come to influenza. 00:04:37.54\00:04:40.18 Influenza is a true killer disease. 00:04:40.21\00:04:42.68 Some 3,000 to 50,000 die in the United States each year. 00:04:42.71\00:04:48.25 It depends on the severity of the influenza strain 00:04:48.28\00:04:52.25 making the rounds. Flu actually also 00:04:52.29\00:04:55.82 gains entrance in 00:04:55.86\00:04:58.09 similar ways as the cold. We'll speak more about that. 00:04:58.13\00:05:01.93 The incubation period (the time from exposure to 00:05:01.96\00:05:06.20 becoming clinically ill) is generally two to three days. 00:05:06.23\00:05:09.24 You can actually transmit the influenza virus 00:05:09.27\00:05:12.81 before you're ill. 00:05:12.84\00:05:14.18 Classic symptoms are 00:05:14.21\00:05:16.01 respiratory (like the cold), only more severe. 00:05:16.04\00:05:18.65 You can have a very high fever, 00:05:18.68\00:05:20.52 severe muscle and joint pains. 00:05:20.55\00:05:23.45 It can last a number of weeks. 00:05:23.49\00:05:25.95 There is actually no such thing as the "stomach flu." 00:05:25.99\00:05:31.43 Usually that term (when someone uses it) 00:05:31.46\00:05:33.86 refers to food poisoning, 00:05:33.90\00:05:35.36 something that we call gastroenteritis. 00:05:35.40\00:05:37.80 We will talk about that some more. Gastroenteritis 00:05:37.83\00:05:41.97 sometimes is caused by viruses, 00:05:42.00\00:05:44.01 other times by bacterial infection. 00:05:44.04\00:05:49.18 The focus of this presentation 00:05:49.21\00:05:51.61 is to help you avoid 00:05:51.65\00:05:54.82 colds and flus naturally. 00:05:54.85\00:05:57.59 What does that look like? How do we avoid 00:05:57.62\00:05:59.95 colds and flus naturally? 00:06:00.06\00:06:02.12 Before we talk about that, let me highlight one thing. 00:06:02.16\00:06:05.69 Whether you develop a cold or the flu, 00:06:05.73\00:06:09.46 there are complications that can arise that 00:06:09.50\00:06:12.90 are not just related to the virus itself. 00:06:12.93\00:06:17.27 You can have severe pneumonia, 00:06:17.31\00:06:21.04 sinus infections, or secondary infections. 00:06:21.08\00:06:25.38 Once you get the cold or flu, 00:06:25.41\00:06:27.45 your immune system is knocked down further. 00:06:27.48\00:06:30.15 You can then pick up something else. 00:06:30.19\00:06:31.85 Just keep this in mind. These are not 00:06:31.89\00:06:33.79 innocuous diseases, even though 00:06:33.82\00:06:35.86 you may have had them many times, 00:06:35.89\00:06:38.43 never experiencing anything 00:06:38.46\00:06:41.96 too devastating. Whether it's Ebola, 00:06:42.00\00:06:45.20 colds, or flu, 00:06:45.23\00:06:46.97 there's a common denominator we need to talk about. 00:06:47.00\00:06:49.87 The common denominator is something called 00:06:49.90\00:06:52.11 inapparent infection. It's at the heart of my book, 00:06:52.14\00:06:55.38 Evading Ebola. It's at the heart of this subject 00:06:55.41\00:06:59.38 of how we can be exposed to colds 00:06:59.41\00:07:02.55 and flus and not get sick. 00:07:02.58\00:07:06.05 If you've not been a regular visitor 00:07:06.09\00:07:10.49 to our programs, the 00:07:10.53\00:07:13.56 LifeStart Seminars, 00:07:13.60\00:07:16.77 I want to let you know about 00:07:16.80\00:07:18.37 some important things that can 00:07:18.40\00:07:19.73 help you as you're following along 00:07:19.77\00:07:21.30 with this presentation. You can pick up some 00:07:21.34\00:07:25.07 additional free information. 00:07:25.11\00:07:27.18 If you go to our website, lifestartseminars.com, 00:07:27.21\00:07:30.85 you'll find excellent resources. First of all, 00:07:30.88\00:07:33.62 we have a study guide that goes along with this 00:07:33.65\00:07:35.62 presentation. Maybe you've already picked it up. 00:07:35.65\00:07:37.72 You may be viewing this with a 00:07:37.75\00:07:38.95 group, and it was handed to you in advance. 00:07:38.99\00:07:40.89 That's wonderful. 00:07:40.92\00:07:42.12 If you're watching this for the first time, 00:07:42.16\00:07:43.99 not familiar with how LifeStart Seminars work, 00:07:44.03\00:07:46.33 make sure you go to the website, 00:07:46.36\00:07:48.10 lifestartseminars.com, 00:07:48.13\00:07:50.37 and get that free resource. 00:07:50.40\00:07:52.17 The second free resource that we have 00:07:52.20\00:07:54.47 is an e book. 00:07:54.50\00:07:55.77 It's a short book that actually walks you through 00:07:55.80\00:07:59.54 the paradigm that we will be 00:07:59.57\00:08:01.44 embarking on in a few minutes. 00:08:01.48\00:08:03.48 It talks about 00:08:03.51\00:08:04.85 natural strategies to deal with illnesses. In this case, 00:08:04.88\00:08:08.65 it's how to decrease risk of viral infections 00:08:08.68\00:08:11.12 like the cold. and the flu. That paradigm 00:08:11.15\00:08:15.49 is summarized in a one-word phrase: LifeStart. 00:08:15.52\00:08:22.33 The "L" stands for Liquids, 00:08:22.36\00:08:25.57 the proper choice of beverages and other 00:08:25.60\00:08:27.84 applications of water. 00:08:27.87\00:08:29.70 We talk about Interpersonal Relationships ("I"). 00:08:29.74\00:08:33.14 We talk about the "F," which is Foods (nutrition). 00:08:33.17\00:08:36.71 "E" stands for Exercise. 00:08:36.75\00:08:38.48 We're going to see that 00:08:38.51\00:08:40.22 all these things have a role in helping us 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.35 prevent viral illnesses, or fend them off. 00:08:42.38\00:08:44.99 We may not be able to go into 00:08:45.02\00:08:46.49 deep detail about all them. 00:08:46.52\00:08:48.06 I'm trying to walk you through the construct, 00:08:48.09\00:08:50.13 just to help you see. 00:08:50.16\00:08:51.49 Even if you've heard it before, 00:08:51.53\00:08:52.89 all these things apply to viral illnesses as well. 00:08:52.93\00:08:55.46 That's "Life." "Start" is a mnemonic as well. 00:08:55.50\00:09:00.94 It's an acronym, a type of memory device. 00:09:00.97\00:09:03.87 Each of the letters in the word "Start" also 00:09:03.91\00:09:06.94 represents a 00:09:06.98\00:09:08.08 natural remedy that can help with viral illness. 00:09:08.11\00:09:10.98 The "S" stands for Sunlight. 00:09:11.01\00:09:12.88 "T" is for Temperance. 00:09:12.91\00:09:14.72 "A" is Air. 00:09:14.75\00:09:15.92 "R" is for Rest. 00:09:15.95\00:09:17.25 "T" is for Trust in Divine Power. 00:09:17.29\00:09:19.95 Let's bring us all together. 00:09:19.99\00:09:22.79 You can get the e book and other free 00:09:22.82\00:09:25.36 resources on the website. 00:09:25.39\00:09:27.56 We have advanced resources for extra study. 00:09:27.60\00:09:30.93 You can purchase my book, Evading Ebola. 00:09:30.97\00:09:34.30 You can purchase DVDs on this and related 00:09:34.34\00:09:37.81 programs, as well as resources from other 00:09:37.84\00:09:41.41 health professionals. Back to the topic 00:09:41.44\00:09:44.58 of inapparent infections, 00:09:44.61\00:09:46.41 just what is an inapparent infection? 00:09:46.45\00:09:51.39 This is when a person is infected 00:09:51.42\00:09:54.06 with a virus, but never gets clinically ill. 00:09:54.09\00:09:59.76 They look fine, maybe a little fatigued. 00:09:59.79\00:10:02.36 They don't look like they have the flu, 00:10:02.40\00:10:05.10 but they're infected with influenza. 00:10:05.13\00:10:07.90 I'll give an illustration that ramps up these stakes, 00:10:07.94\00:10:14.58 as we're talking about these 00:10:14.61\00:10:16.91 viral illnesses. I want to tell you about one called 00:10:16.95\00:10:19.78 Eastern equine encephalitis. 00:10:19.81\00:10:22.12 If you live in the western United States 00:10:22.15\00:10:23.79 and never travel out east, 00:10:23.82\00:10:24.92 you can rest assured. E.E.E. 00:10:24.95\00:10:28.19 (Eastern equine encephalitis) 00:10:28.22\00:10:30.29 is pretty much confined to the Atlantic 00:10:30.33\00:10:32.93 and Gulf Coast states. 00:10:32.96\00:10:34.20 You're not going to expect to find it in California. 00:10:34.20\00:10:36.77 Having said that, there is a Western 00:10:36.80\00:10:39.33 equine encephalitis. As you guessed by the name, 00:10:39.37\00:10:42.00 this is a virus that can affect horses, 00:10:42.04\00:10:43.97 but also humans. 00:10:44.01\00:10:45.41 If humans are infected, 00:10:45.44\00:10:46.94 they can get very sick 00:10:46.98\00:10:48.38 and develop encephalitis, a brain infection. 00:10:48.41\00:10:52.51 "Encephalitis" literally means 00:10:52.55\00:10:54.52 "inflammation of the brain." 00:10:54.55\00:10:55.95 You can get a terrible headache, 00:10:55.98\00:10:57.59 high fever, chills, vomiting. 00:10:57.62\00:10:59.85 In fact, if you know much about Ebola, it's 00:10:59.89\00:11:03.96 sounding a lot like that virus. 00:11:03.99\00:11:06.36 Eastern equine encephalitis 00:11:06.39\00:11:08.53 can cause disorientation, 00:11:08.56\00:11:10.30 seizures, coma. You can die. 00:11:10.33\00:11:13.34 Thirty three percent of people 00:11:13.37\00:11:16.57 who develop clinical 00:11:16.60\00:11:18.21 Eastern equine encephalitis infection die. 00:11:18.24\00:11:21.91 Those who survive 00:11:21.94\00:11:25.28 have serious or significant brain damage. 00:11:25.31\00:11:28.42 You may ask, "Why are we talking about this? 00:11:28.45\00:11:31.09 Why isn't there a huge 00:11:31.12\00:11:33.39 outpouring of fear about Eastern 00:11:33.42\00:11:35.16 equine encephalitis?" The reason is that 00:11:35.19\00:11:38.26 there are only a few 00:11:38.29\00:11:39.46 clinical cases each year. 00:11:39.49\00:11:41.13 Most of the people 00:11:41.16\00:11:42.66 infected with this mosquito-borne virus 00:11:42.70\00:11:46.84 never get sick. 00:11:46.87\00:11:49.64 They have an inapparent infection. 00:11:49.67\00:11:54.08 Did you know the same is true about 00:11:54.11\00:11:57.08 the Ebola virus? 00:11:57.11\00:11:58.58 With some serious viruses, 00:11:58.61\00:12:03.25 like the Ebola virus in West Africa, 00:12:03.28\00:12:06.39 70 percent of the people with it die. 00:12:06.42\00:12:09.42 Research indicates that many people in Africa 00:12:09.46\00:12:15.06 have inapparent infections, 00:12:15.10\00:12:16.70 have the Ebola virus, but never get sick. 00:12:16.73\00:12:19.40 This was a classic study from Gabon Africa in 1996. 00:12:19.43\00:12:23.54 Twenty-four had contact with Ebola patients, 00:12:23.57\00:12:26.21 each directly exposed 00:12:26.24\00:12:28.04 to highly infectious materials 00:12:28.08\00:12:29.71 (feces, vomit, saliva, sweat, and blood). 00:12:29.74\00:12:32.51 Not one of those 24 people became sick. 00:12:32.55\00:12:36.52 Researchers checked these individuals for infection. 00:12:36.55\00:12:42.76 They found that 11 of the 24 00:12:42.79\00:12:45.69 had been infected with the Ebola virus, 00:12:45.73\00:12:47.83 yet never got sick. 00:12:47.86\00:12:49.83 Why am I talking about Ebola 00:12:49.86\00:12:51.97 in the context of colds and flus? 00:12:52.00\00:12:54.34 I'm trying to help you see something. 00:12:54.37\00:12:56.87 We may think certain viruses are innocuous, 00:12:56.91\00:13:00.28 and others are dread illnesses. 00:13:00.31\00:13:02.58 What I'm trying to help you see 00:13:02.61\00:13:03.91 is, when it comes to viral illness, 00:13:03.95\00:13:06.78 many viruses 00:13:06.82\00:13:08.55 can cause severe, life-threatening complications. 00:13:08.58\00:13:11.92 This mean some cold viruses, for sure the flu. 00:13:11.95\00:13:15.79 While we are afraid of Ebola, 00:13:15.82\00:13:20.00 viruses like Eastern equine encephalitis and the flu, 00:13:20.03\00:13:24.80 claiming lives and causing serious infection. 00:13:24.83\00:13:31.11 I'm trying to give you some good news, 00:13:31.14\00:13:33.34 though it may seem like I'm being morbid. 00:13:33.38\00:13:37.25 You can come into close proximity 00:13:37.28\00:13:40.48 with serious, even lethal viruses. 00:13:40.52\00:13:42.82 Whether it's Ebola, Eastern equine encephalitis, 00:13:42.85\00:13:45.75 or influenza, you don't have to be infected. 00:13:45.79\00:13:49.46 Remember that study in Gabon. 00:13:49.49\00:13:52.56 Twenty-four individuals, intimately associated, 00:13:52.59\00:13:54.96 and 13 of them did not get infected. 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.53 Even if you do get infected, 00:13:57.57\00:13:59.77 or a virus gets a foothold in your body, 00:13:59.80\00:14:01.97 you have the potential to fight it 00:14:02.00\00:14:03.71 without ever getting sick. 00:14:03.74\00:14:05.61 That is good news. It applies 00:14:05.64\00:14:08.21 not only to serious illnesses, but also 00:14:08.24\00:14:11.98 to colds and flus. 00:14:12.01\00:14:14.18 Hopefully you're hearing how potentially 00:14:14.22\00:14:16.72 very serious these are. 00:14:16.75\00:14:19.62 What researchers found with Ebola is the same 00:14:19.65\00:14:22.36 that we're finding with colds and flus. 00:14:22.39\00:14:26.16 The key is the person's immune system. 00:14:26.19\00:14:29.23 What I'm suggesting is that we need to live 00:14:29.26\00:14:33.90 a lifestyle that is aware 00:14:33.94\00:14:36.77 of the presence of viruses in our midst. 00:14:36.81\00:14:38.87 when I wrote Evading Ebola, I said we should live 00:14:38.91\00:14:41.51 an Ebola-aware lifestyle. 00:14:41.54\00:14:43.04 When speaking about colds and flus, 00:14:43.08\00:14:47.05 you should live a cold and flu-aware lifestyle. 00:14:47.08\00:14:52.62 This is a part of the LifeStart Seminars. 00:14:52.65\00:15:00.63 What do you think we'll focus on in LifeStart? 00:15:00.66\00:15:03.83 We're going focus on liquids, interpersonal relations, and 00:15:03.87\00:15:09.14 foods. Let's start with the liquids. 00:15:09.17\00:15:14.28 The most important concept, when it comes to liquids, 00:15:14.31\00:15:18.61 is hygiene. 00:15:18.65\00:15:20.95 It's the external application of water 00:15:20.98\00:15:23.92 to articles like your hands. 00:15:23.95\00:15:26.52 We're speaking of hand washing. 00:15:26.55\00:15:29.29 When it comes to any infectious agents 00:15:29.32\00:15:33.73 (viral as well as bacterial agents), 00:15:33.76\00:15:36.03 one key issue is called the infective dose. 00:15:36.06\00:15:41.00 You can be exposed to a virus or bacteria but never get sick, 00:15:41.04\00:15:45.91 if you don't get exposed to enough of them. 00:15:45.94\00:15:48.31 It's just like a battle or a war. 00:15:48.34\00:15:51.38 Let's say you're at war with another country. 00:15:51.41\00:15:53.31 Someone says, " We're sending two soldiers 00:15:53.35\00:15:55.22 onto American soil to wipe you out." 00:15:55.25\00:15:57.65 You're saying, "Come on--two soldiers? 00:15:57.69\00:15:59.49 I don't care where they land. 00:15:59.52\00:16:01.26 How much damage can two soldiers do?" 00:16:01.29\00:16:03.19 It may be a lot, 00:16:03.22\00:16:04.83 but they're not going to overrun the country. 00:16:04.86\00:16:06.73 It's the same with infectious agents. 00:16:06.76\00:16:08.63 Let's talk about food poisoning. 00:16:08.66\00:16:10.60 We mentioned that misnomer of 00:16:10.63\00:16:13.27 stomach flu (there's no such thing). 00:16:13.30\00:16:16.64 Gastroenteritis means inflammation 00:16:16.67\00:16:19.57 of the intestines in the stomach. 00:16:19.61\00:16:21.78 You've got gastroenteritis 00:16:21.81\00:16:24.35 (or the potential for it) if you're exposed to 00:16:24.38\00:16:27.12 Campylobacter Jejuni. Campylobacter causes 00:16:27.15\00:16:31.45 two million infections in the United States every year. 00:16:31.49\00:16:34.89 Most people have never heard about it. 00:16:34.92\00:16:37.43 You'll have diarrhea, maybe some vomiting, 00:16:37.46\00:16:40.43 but it doesn't leave its calling card. 00:16:40.46\00:16:43.93 If you've said, "I've got 00:16:43.97\00:16:45.87 food poisoning," or, "I've got the stomach flu," you 00:16:45.90\00:16:48.67 shouldn't be using that terminology. 00:16:48.70\00:16:50.47 Why am I repeating it? Campylobacter Jejuni 00:16:50.51\00:16:55.21 could be contaminating your food. 00:16:55.24\00:16:58.98 You need somewhere between 500 and 10,000 bacteria 00:16:59.01\00:17:03.92 to get infected. 00:17:03.95\00:17:05.19 You're saying, "That's a big range, 500 to 10,000. 00:17:05.22\00:17:08.29 Why is there such a range?" 00:17:08.32\00:17:09.36 Our immune systems have varying 00:17:09.39\00:17:13.09 fortitude. Let me mention something else. 00:17:13.13\00:17:17.10 If you're taking medications 00:17:17.13\00:17:20.27 to suppress stomach acid, 00:17:20.30\00:17:22.77 you are suppressing one of the lines of defense, 00:17:22.80\00:17:25.67 when it comes to infectious agents 00:17:25.71\00:17:27.71 entering through the oral tract. 00:17:27.74\00:17:29.38 Campylobacter comes through the oral tract. 00:17:29.41\00:17:32.75 Your food could be contaminated. 00:17:32.78\00:17:34.58 Someone working in the restaurant 00:17:34.62\00:17:37.49 might not have followed signs like "All 00:17:37.52\00:17:41.46 Employees Must Wash Their Hands Before Returning to Work." 00:17:41.49\00:17:44.16 They didn't do that. They were sick, 00:17:44.19\00:17:46.73 Campylobacter in their excrement. 00:17:46.76\00:17:49.66 They pass it along when handling your 00:17:49.70\00:17:52.60 food. I know that's not a pleasant thought, 00:17:52.63\00:17:55.57 but it can happen. 00:17:55.60\00:17:57.71 If you are being more hygienic, 00:17:57.74\00:18:00.14 even if you're exposed to Campylobacter, 00:18:00.18\00:18:02.71 you may not develop the infection. 00:18:02.74\00:18:05.31 Other infectious agents are more virulent 00:18:05.35\00:18:08.08 (in other words, a smaller 00:18:08.12\00:18:09.58 number of viruses or bacteria cause infection). 00:18:09.62\00:18:13.09 Salmonella Typhi, 00:18:13.12\00:18:14.82 the agent that causes typhoid fever, 00:18:14.86\00:18:18.19 takes maybe 15 to 1,000 bacteria. 00:18:18.23\00:18:21.36 That's tenfold or less than 00:18:21.40\00:18:25.40 Campylobacter needs to infect someone. 00:18:25.43\00:18:28.24 You can have a few Salmonella bacteria 00:18:28.27\00:18:31.07 (Salmonella Typhi) and not get sick. 00:18:31.11\00:18:33.61 Ebola seems to take fewer viruses then those 00:18:33.64\00:18:39.38 other agents. 00:18:39.41\00:18:43.99 Let's say you're exposed to those things. 00:18:44.02\00:18:46.59 Let's make this scenario a little different. 00:18:46.62\00:18:48.76 Let's say the restaurant worker uses the restroom, 00:18:48.79\00:18:54.96 then washes his or her hands. 00:18:55.00\00:18:59.80 Let's deepen the plot a little bit. 00:18:59.83\00:19:03.10 The restaurant worker uses the restroom, 00:19:03.14\00:19:06.78 does not wash their hands, 00:19:06.81\00:19:09.61 and opens the bathroom door, contaminating it. 00:19:09.64\00:19:14.32 As they're going to prepare the food, 00:19:14.35\00:19:16.99 they say, "I'd better wash my hands. 00:19:17.02\00:19:19.32 I can't contaminate the food," then wash their hands. 00:19:19.35\00:19:21.62 The food won't be contaminated with Campylobacter. 00:19:21.66\00:19:24.73 It's on the door handle of the bathroom. 00:19:24.76\00:19:27.60 You go into that bathroom. 00:19:27.66\00:19:29.50 We're applying this concept of using 00:19:29.53\00:19:32.13 liquids and washing your hands. 00:19:32.17\00:19:33.74 You use the bathroom, 00:19:33.77\00:19:35.14 washing and drying your hands. 00:19:35.17\00:19:38.41 You throw the paper towel out, open the bathroom door. 00:19:38.44\00:19:43.41 You can contaminate your washed hand 00:19:43.45\00:19:46.48 with that dirty door handle in the bathroom. 00:19:46.51\00:19:50.62 After washing your hands, 00:19:50.65\00:19:53.36 you could use a paper towel to open the door. 00:19:53.39\00:19:55.82 Do you see the difference? 00:19:55.86\00:19:57.36 Things in that bathroom may be contaminated. 00:19:57.39\00:20:00.86 This includes the faucet and the door. 00:20:00.90\00:20:03.40 It could even include the paper towel dispenser. 00:20:03.43\00:20:06.70 Think about that. 00:20:06.74\00:20:08.07 Keep your hands clean, 00:20:08.10\00:20:09.57 and you can decrease the risk 00:20:09.60\00:20:11.11 of infectious diseases, 00:20:11.14\00:20:12.27 not just Campylobacter and Salmonella. 00:20:12.31\00:20:15.48 This is how 00:20:15.51\00:20:16.85 the flu and common colds are effectively transmitted. 00:20:16.88\00:20:19.85 Someone blows their nose, 00:20:19.88\00:20:22.12 they have a cold or the flu. 00:20:22.15\00:20:24.29 They then open the door 00:20:24.32\00:20:26.69 to the establishment. We're 00:20:26.72\00:20:27.89 not talking about a bathroom door. 00:20:27.92\00:20:29.56 We're talking about walking into a grocery store. 00:20:29.59\00:20:32.26 You say, "They have electric 00:20:32.29\00:20:33.46 doors, Doctor DeRose." 00:20:33.50\00:20:34.40 Whatever door you have to handle, you handle. 00:20:34.46\00:20:37.10 They're touching boxes in the grocery store. 00:20:37.13\00:20:39.40 They're touching the fruit. 00:20:39.43\00:20:40.77 You touch the fruit 00:20:40.80\00:20:42.60 that has been exposed to 00:20:42.64\00:20:46.14 an adenovirus. 00:20:46.17\00:20:47.84 You then rub your eye 00:20:47.88\00:20:49.84 or nose. 00:20:49.88\00:20:51.91 You have just inoculated yourself 00:20:51.95\00:20:54.05 with a virus. 00:20:54.08\00:20:55.98 It all starts with liquids. 00:20:56.02\00:20:58.05 Use liquids, clean your hands thoroughly. 00:20:58.09\00:21:01.19 Wash thoroughly, 00:21:01.22\00:21:02.59 especially before touching your face, 00:21:02.62\00:21:04.63 your eyes, or eating food. 00:21:04.66\00:21:08.03 You will decrease your risk of 00:21:08.06\00:21:11.17 developing colds, flus, and other more 00:21:11.20\00:21:14.87 serious infections. 00:21:14.90\00:21:17.17 Let's talk about the use of hydrotherapy. 00:21:17.21\00:21:20.11 Water therapy can help decrease your risk 00:21:20.14\00:21:22.58 of colds and flus. 00:21:22.61\00:21:23.85 Many people don't realize this. 00:21:23.88\00:21:25.48 If your respiratory tract is very dry, 00:21:25.51\00:21:28.92 the mucosa (the lining) is not moist. 00:21:28.95\00:21:34.09 That increases your risk 00:21:34.12\00:21:36.62 of developing colds or flus. 00:21:36.66\00:21:38.66 Bacteria or viruses 00:21:38.69\00:21:40.86 (colds and flus are viral illnesses) 00:21:40.90\00:21:43.70 can get a foothold 00:21:43.73\00:21:45.10 into your mucosa easily. 00:21:45.13\00:21:48.37 What do you do? 00:21:48.40\00:21:50.67 How do you prevent 00:21:50.71\00:21:52.07 your mucosa from drying out? 00:21:52.11\00:21:55.54 You can use a humidifier in your room. 00:21:55.58\00:21:58.11 Have you ever thought about that at night? 00:21:58.15\00:21:59.88 Some say, "I don't want to buy a humidifier." 00:21:59.91\00:22:02.08 One of my friends, who is a 00:22:02.12\00:22:05.15 family practice doctor, 00:22:05.19\00:22:07.99 actually has people put a Crock Pot 00:22:08.02\00:22:10.66 in their bedroom with a layer of water in it. 00:22:10.69\00:22:14.66 You use the Crock Pot during the day for cooking. 00:22:14.73\00:22:19.03 You use it at night during the cold and 00:22:19.07\00:22:20.94 flu season when the humidity is low. 00:22:20.97\00:22:23.14 The colder the air is, 00:22:23.17\00:22:24.64 the less humid it will be 00:22:24.67\00:22:25.84 (especially in drier parts of the US). 00:22:25.87\00:22:27.81 You can have that vaporizer going 00:22:27.84\00:22:30.31 throughout the night. It will keep your 00:22:30.35\00:22:32.08 mucous membrane moist, 00:22:32.11\00:22:34.62 decreasing your risk of colds and flus. 00:22:34.65\00:22:37.12 We've talked about liquids to some extent. 00:22:37.15\00:22:39.85 That's just the first of nine strategies 00:22:39.89\00:22:43.12 in the LifeStart paradigm, that acronym. 00:22:43.16\00:22:46.46 What about the rest? 00:22:46.49\00:22:47.66 Let's jump to exercise at this point. 00:22:47.66\00:22:50.20 Exercise is so important for the immune system. 00:22:50.23\00:22:52.50 Back in 2011, 00:22:52.53\00:22:55.60 Doctor David Nieman 00:22:55.64\00:22:56.84 and his colleagues at Appalachian State University 00:22:56.87\00:22:59.41 looked at the incidence of colds and flus 00:22:59.44\00:23:02.84 in that North Carolina community. 00:23:02.88\00:23:05.41 Individuals aged 18 to 85 were included in the study, 00:23:05.45\00:23:09.58 men and women. 00:23:09.62\00:23:11.55 They followed these individuals 00:23:11.59\00:23:13.69 for 12 weeks during the cold and flu season. 00:23:13.72\00:23:17.46 What they found was quite remarkable. 00:23:17.49\00:23:19.53 Those who were exercising on a regular basis 00:23:19.56\00:23:22.63 (five or more days per week) 00:23:22.66\00:23:25.03 were compared to those who were 00:23:25.07\00:23:26.97 exercising less than two days per week. 00:23:27.00\00:23:30.87 Frequent exercisers had about half the likelihood 00:23:30.91\00:23:34.88 of having colds and flus and the symptoms 00:23:34.91\00:23:37.65 related to those illnesses. 00:23:37.68\00:23:39.28 They may have had an inapparent infection. 00:23:39.31\00:23:41.82 Exercise is an immune enhancer 00:23:41.85\00:23:44.52 with moderate exercise. 00:23:44.55\00:23:46.29 I stress "moderate exercise," 00:23:46.32\00:23:48.09 as illustrated in the 00:23:48.12\00:23:51.59 Exercise Immunology Review, in 2010. 00:23:51.63\00:23:54.93 Excessive exercise 00:23:54.93\00:23:57.13 (as often occurs with athletes) 00:23:57.17\00:24:00.30 suppresses the immune system. 00:24:00.34\00:24:02.07 This particular study looked at a dozen 00:24:02.10\00:24:05.27 athletes, engaged in two hours of exhaustive exercise 00:24:05.31\00:24:10.55 on an exercise bicycle. 00:24:10.58\00:24:12.81 Researchers found that, after exercise 00:24:12.85\00:24:15.18 white blood cells (that help fight off viruses like Ebola) 00:24:15.22\00:24:21.32 dropped. It dropped two, four hours after exercise. 00:24:21.36\00:24:25.26 It stayed at a low level, did not return to normal, 00:24:25.29\00:24:29.40 even after 24 hours. 00:24:29.43\00:24:31.13 Do not over-exercise. Another natural 00:24:31.17\00:24:36.67 element that can help prevent colds and flus is in that 00:24:36.71\00:24:39.71 LifeStart acronym is Air (fresh air). 00:24:39.74\00:24:42.38 The single worst thing you can do 00:24:42.41\00:24:44.51 is expose yourself to cigarette smoke. 00:24:44.55\00:24:46.72 Research goes back to the 1919 influenza 00:24:46.75\00:24:50.69 epidemic. This is an anecdotal story, 00:24:50.72\00:24:53.32 something told in medical circles. 00:24:53.36\00:24:55.99 Some of these things are hard to document. 00:24:56.02\00:24:59.03 Apparently, in California (where I call my home) 00:24:59.06\00:25:03.60 many suffered from the influenza epidemic, as 00:25:03.63\00:25:07.70 was the case throughout the world. 00:25:07.74\00:25:09.94 Doctors ran out of space in the hospital. 00:25:09.97\00:25:12.41 They moved some patients out into tents, 00:25:12.44\00:25:17.55 tried to keep them warm by putting 00:25:17.58\00:25:20.52 how water bottles at their feet. 00:25:20.55\00:25:22.42 The story is, these individuals fared better 00:25:22.45\00:25:27.42 (the ones outdoors getting fresh air). 00:25:27.46\00:25:29.82 This is just an interesting insight. 00:25:29.86\00:25:31.76 Don't lock yourself up 00:25:31.79\00:25:33.53 in your room. Keep some fresh air circulating, 00:25:33.56\00:25:36.00 even if you're fighting 00:25:36.03\00:25:37.07 an infection, but don't get chilled. 00:25:37.10\00:25:38.77 Let's talk about a few more things, like 00:25:38.80\00:25:42.50 foods and immunity. 00:25:42.54\00:25:44.44 Steve Provacha, a physician at 00:25:44.47\00:25:46.44 Kaiser Permanente, 00:25:46.47\00:25:47.78 the California-based 00:25:47.81\00:25:50.68 healthcare provider, the HMO. 00:25:50.71\00:25:53.15 He actually 00:25:53.18\00:25:54.65 wrote an interesting article that 00:25:54.68\00:25:56.72 appeared in medical hypotheses years ago. 00:25:56.75\00:25:59.05 Looking at the research, he 00:25:59.09\00:26:01.72 found that when you eat animal products, 00:26:01.76\00:26:04.16 the stress system of the body is activated. 00:26:04.19\00:26:07.40 You may know about stress hormones. 00:26:07.40\00:26:09.86 Stress hormones decrease inflammation. 00:26:09.90\00:26:11.93 That's why we give cortisone shots. 00:26:11.97\00:26:13.90 When you decrease inflammation, 00:26:13.94\00:26:15.94 you suppress the immune system. 00:26:15.97\00:26:17.51 Provacha's work made a strong case. 00:26:17.54\00:26:21.14 For our immune systems to function optimally, 00:26:21.18\00:26:25.21 we want to keep animal product intakes low. 00:26:25.25\00:26:29.42 We want to increase our intake of fruits, 00:26:29.45\00:26:32.15 grains, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. 00:26:32.19\00:26:36.12 Let me come back to Liquids, since we're 00:26:36.16\00:26:38.59 speaking about the stress system. 00:26:38.63\00:26:40.16 Many of us take a beverage 00:26:40.20\00:26:42.63 that ramps up our stress hormones. 00:26:42.66\00:26:44.47 That beverage is anything containing caffeine. 00:26:44.50\00:26:47.44 Caffeinated beverages ramp up the stress 00:26:47.47\00:26:50.21 system of the body. That's why it wakes you up. 00:26:50.24\00:26:53.11 Think about how the stress system 00:26:53.14\00:26:55.98 suppresses the immune system. 00:26:56.01\00:26:58.25 Stay away from caffeine 00:26:58.28\00:26:59.88 during cold and flu season. 00:26:59.91\00:27:01.95 You may be surprised. 00:27:01.98\00:27:03.15 Another beverage with immune-suppressing effects 00:27:03.18\00:27:05.95 is alcohol. 00:27:05.99\00:27:07.16 Alcohol has immune-suppressing effects. 00:27:07.19\00:27:09.99 It's something else I recommend you avoid. 00:27:10.03\00:27:12.83 On the flip side, let's get 00:27:12.86\00:27:13.96 back to our LifeStart acronym. 00:27:14.00\00:27:15.60 You want to get more sunshine in the winter. 00:27:15.63\00:27:19.47 If you're much 00:27:19.50\00:27:20.70 further north of Bakersfield, California, or 00:27:20.74\00:27:23.00 Chattanooga, Tennessee, 00:27:23.04\00:27:24.57 you wont make vitamin D by getting out in the sun. 00:27:24.61\00:27:27.44 Take a vitamin D supplement. It's vital. 00:27:27.48\00:27:30.18 Sleep, rest, and stress management 00:27:30.21\00:27:33.15 are vital to optimal immune functioning. 00:27:33.18\00:27:35.38 That pretty much rounds up LifeStart. 00:27:35.42\00:27:38.82 I'm Doctor David DeRose.
