Indeed, 00:01:09.03\00:01:12.60 you can, in many cases, prevent cancer naturally. 00:01:12.63\00:01:17.27 That's not just my message. It's an encouraging message that 00:01:17.31\00:01:20.24 cancer experts, oncologists, and cancer researchers are sharing. 00:01:20.28\00:01:24.68 One of the seminal publications on this topic is "Food 00:01:24.71\00:01:28.38 Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer." 00:01:28.42\00:01:32.35 It's an extensively documented work, put out 00:01:32.39\00:01:34.92 by the World Cancer Research Fund 00:01:34.96\00:01:37.03 and the American Institute for Cancer Research. 00:01:37.06\00:01:40.13 It was just last year that I was invited to speak 00:01:40.16\00:01:43.90 in Europe at an international conference. 00:01:43.93\00:01:46.17 In addition to giving a 00:01:46.20\00:01:47.57 plenary lecture, I was also going to be giving a workshop. 00:01:47.60\00:01:51.84 I was especially delighted to hear 00:01:51.87\00:01:54.54 that workshop would be given in concert 00:01:54.58\00:01:56.75 with Doctor Mark Connor. 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.41 Doctor Connor, a surgeon from Europe, 00:01:58.45\00:02:01.02 was someone I had met many years ago. 00:02:01.05\00:02:02.72 I had not seen him in, actually, 00:02:02.75\00:02:05.09 several decades. I was looking for to 00:02:05.12\00:02:07.42 to seeing Mark, working together with him. We had 00:02:07.46\00:02:09.52 corresponded electronically, some prior to the 00:02:09.56\00:02:11.93 conference that was held in Prague (in the Czech Republic). 00:02:11.96\00:02:14.93 When I got there, I was shocked to see Doctor Connor. 00:02:14.96\00:02:19.20 This guy was significantly older than me. 00:02:19.23\00:02:22.57 When I was looking at him, he looked 00:02:22.60\00:02:25.74 like he was much younger than me. 00:02:25.77\00:02:29.01 This is something that will definitely get your attention 00:02:29.04\00:02:32.21 when it comes to lifestyle and the benefits you can get 00:02:32.25\00:02:36.08 from following healthy lifestyle practices. These things deserve our attention, 00:07:42.69\00:07:45.49 if we want to prevent cancer. 00:07:45.53\00:07:47.23 The third one is energy-dense foods. 00:07:47.23\00:07:51.07 The next topic that's highlighted are plant foods. 00:07:51.10\00:07:54.50 Then there's talk about animal foods. 00:07:54.54\00:07:56.60 These are one set of foods derived from plant sources. 00:07:56.64\00:08:00.38 Another set of foods 00:08:00.41\00:08:01.88 is derived from animal sources. We'll find they have different 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.38 effects, if you're not already aware. 00:08:04.41\00:08:06.48 These groups then looked at 00:08:06.51\00:08:07.62 liquids, like alcoholic beverages. 00:08:07.65\00:08:10.09 Salt and preservation and 00:08:10.12\00:08:13.42 dietary supplements are topics. 00:08:13.46\00:08:15.32 These are some of the areas that we'll discuss, 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.56 looking at the current research as summarized 00:08:17.59\00:08:20.00 in that excellent book. 00:08:20.03\00:08:23.30 One of the issues I just have to mention 00:08:23.33\00:08:27.10 is that sometimes drawing these connections 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.14 between lifestyle and cancer are not the easiest. 00:08:29.17\00:08:33.04 The reason is that 00:08:33.07\00:08:34.28 we're not typically doing lifestyle studies 00:08:34.31\00:08:37.55 of people with cancer. We're only observing. 00:08:37.58\00:08:41.32 We then say, "Okay, 00:08:41.35\00:08:42.72 here are these who have developed cancer. 00:08:42.75\00:08:45.05 Here are those who didn't. 00:08:45.09\00:08:46.35 Let's compare them, 00:08:46.39\00:08:47.59 to see if we can find lifestyle differences. 00:08:47.62\00:08:50.19 Sometimes, that's done in what's called a 00:08:50.23\00:08:52.03 case-control study. 00:08:52.06\00:08:53.29 That's started 00:08:53.33\00:08:54.60 by identifying the cases (individuals with, 00:08:54.63\00:08:56.93 let's say, breast cancer). 00:08:56.97\00:08:58.60 Then we try to find women who 00:08:58.63\00:09:00.44 appear to be similar in all other respects, except 00:09:00.47\00:09:03.14 they don't have breast cancer. 00:09:03.17\00:09:04.41 You then try to look at differences. 00:09:04.44\00:09:06.04 Those studies are helpful, but not as 00:09:06.07\00:09:07.98 powerful as what we call longitudinal, 00:09:08.01\00:09:10.18 or cohort studies. 00:09:10.21\00:09:11.51 That's where a group of people are followed over 00:09:11.55\00:09:13.58 time. We will be sharing with you research like that. 00:09:13.62\00:09:16.48 Some might say, "These two groups look the same. 00:09:16.52\00:09:19.42 We follow them over time. 00:09:19.45\00:09:20.72 This person gets cancer, this doesn't. 00:09:20.76\00:09:23.29 What was different?" 00:09:23.32\00:09:24.36 When you look at many people, 00:09:24.39\00:09:25.96 you can sometimes draw some very 00:09:25.99\00:09:27.46 interesting conclusions. 00:09:27.50\00:09:28.86 Here are the "three big ones" that we want to 00:09:28.90\00:09:30.73 talk about. This is 00:09:30.77\00:09:31.83 what was highlighted in that 00:09:31.87\00:09:33.50 very important work. 00:09:33.54\00:09:34.74 The three big issues as, far as cancer prevention, 00:09:34.77\00:09:37.61 are weight management, physical activity, 00:09:37.64\00:09:40.78 and diet. You might say, "Wait a minute! 00:09:40.81\00:09:43.55 That sounds a lot 00:09:43.58\00:09:45.15 like what I've heard you, Doctor DeRose, 00:09:45.18\00:09:47.32 speak about in Reversing Diabetes Naturally." 00:09:47.35\00:09:50.59 That's one presentation here, in LifeStart Seminars. 00:09:50.62\00:09:55.52 It's these very same fundamentals 00:09:55.56\00:09:57.86 that set the stage for a host of diseases. 00:09:57.89\00:10:00.90 Cancer is right on the list. 00:10:00.93\00:10:02.70 The point is, we can 00:10:02.73\00:10:04.90 decrease our risk of cancer by 00:10:04.93\00:10:08.24 changing our lifestyle. Before we go too far, 00:10:08.27\00:10:11.07 I would be negligent not to put, in bold letters, 00:10:11.11\00:10:14.14 one of the most important factors. 00:10:14.18\00:10:15.98 It is embodied in the LifeStart paradigm. 00:10:16.01\00:10:18.88 It's the letter "A," which stands for (fresh) Air. 00:10:18.91\00:10:24.49 What is the single worst 00:10:24.52\00:10:26.49 pollutant that people are exposed to today? 00:10:26.52\00:10:30.33 Some of you living in industrial areas 00:10:30.36\00:10:32.46 might say, "That factory over there 00:10:32.49\00:10:34.36 keeps spewing that junk out." I am not saying 00:10:34.36\00:10:37.17 that some of those industrial 00:10:37.20\00:10:38.73 byproducts, whether in the air or the 00:10:38.77\00:10:40.70 water, are not dangerous. 00:10:40.74\00:10:42.74 They pale in comparison 00:10:42.77\00:10:45.21 to one single air pollution device, 00:10:45.24\00:10:49.98 the cigarette. Are you aware 00:10:50.01\00:10:53.95 that scientists have identified over 00:10:53.98\00:10:57.19 7,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke? 00:10:57.22\00:11:02.76 Speaking about cancer, I've got to tell it to you, 00:11:02.79\00:11:05.56 right out. There are four classes 00:11:05.59\00:11:08.70 of chemicals in tobacco smoke 00:11:08.73\00:11:10.83 that increase your likelihood of having cancer. 00:11:10.87\00:11:13.67 There are things 00:11:13.70\00:11:17.11 called carcinogens, cancer-causing substances. 00:11:17.14\00:11:21.81 Co-carcinogens are substances that work with 00:11:21.84\00:11:26.35 the carcinogen to cause cancer. Tumor promoters 00:11:26.38\00:11:31.19 promote cancer growth. If that's not enough, 00:11:31.22\00:11:34.99 there are chemicals called tumor accelerators. 00:11:35.02\00:11:38.83 Those also speed up the growth of cancer. 00:11:38.86\00:11:42.20 Do you see how powerful 00:11:42.23\00:11:44.87 tobacco smoke is in inducing cancer? 00:11:44.90\00:11:47.44 This is not just in the lungs, 00:11:47.47\00:11:48.90 voice box, or other areas 00:11:48.94\00:11:50.87 directly exposed to smoke. 00:11:50.91\00:11:52.97 It's also in places like the bladder. 00:11:53.01\00:11:58.11 Those chemicals get into the bloodstream. 00:11:58.15\00:12:00.72 They're shipped throughout the body. 00:12:00.75\00:12:03.85 You increase your risk of cancer in multiple sites 00:12:03.89\00:12:08.02 by cigarette smoking. 00:12:08.06\00:12:09.36 If you needed another reason to quit, there it is. 00:12:09.39\00:12:12.56 Get rid of the tobacco smoke, and you 00:12:12.59\00:12:15.33 will decrease your risk of cancer. 00:12:15.36\00:12:17.27 We're talking about preventing 00:12:17.30\00:12:19.40 cancer naturally. If you're serious, 00:12:19.43\00:12:21.64 you're going to get rid of the cigarettes. 00:12:21.67\00:12:23.64 That's probably enough said, isn't it? 00:12:23.67\00:12:25.81 Let me tell you one other thing. 00:12:25.84\00:12:27.71 When you're a specialist in internal 00:12:27.74\00:12:29.74 and preventive medicine, 00:12:29.78\00:12:30.98 it's not as dramatic and as glamorous 00:12:31.01\00:12:34.98 a specialty as being a surgeon. 00:12:35.02\00:12:37.62 Let's say someone is dying, and the surgeon does 00:12:37.65\00:12:40.56 an operation that saves that life. 00:12:40.59\00:12:42.66 They may say, "You saved my life, Doctor." 00:12:42.69\00:12:45.19 I'm very glad 00:12:45.23\00:12:46.59 we have many wonderful surgeons in the world. 00:12:46.63\00:12:49.63 When you're a preventive medicine specialist, 00:12:49.66\00:12:52.17 you're just trying to prevent disease. 00:12:52.20\00:12:56.74 Let's say you kept smoking, 00:12:56.77\00:12:58.47 and developed lung cancer that, 00:12:58.51\00:13:01.14 by chance, was caught early. 00:13:01.18\00:13:03.14 Do you realize most lung cancers 00:13:03.18\00:13:05.38 are caught at a point where they're not curable? 00:13:05.41\00:13:08.18 Most people die within a very 00:13:08.22\00:13:10.12 short time of being diagnosed. 00:13:10.15\00:13:12.25 Let's say yours was caught early. 00:13:12.29\00:13:13.96 The surgeon goes in, maybe 00:13:13.99\00:13:15.19 removes a lobe of your lung, 00:13:15.22\00:13:16.66 and you're healed. You may have some 00:13:16.69\00:13:19.86 difficulties. You've already damaged 00:13:19.89\00:13:21.70 the lungs due to emphysema. Now you've got 00:13:21.73\00:13:23.70 less lung 00:13:23.73\00:13:25.53 volume. You're having some breathing difficulties, 00:13:25.57\00:13:27.97 but you're alive. You're a survivor, just 00:13:28.00\00:13:29.97 thanking that surgeon who saved your life. 00:13:30.01\00:13:31.87 Let me tell you something better, that I can offer. 00:13:31.91\00:13:34.78 You haven't yet been diagnosed with 00:13:34.81\00:13:37.05 cancer, but there is a statistical possibility 00:13:37.08\00:13:39.98 the cancer has already begun in your lungs. 00:13:40.02\00:13:43.08 It is possible. If you keep smoking 00:13:43.12\00:13:46.62 from this day onward, 00:13:46.65\00:13:48.59 that practice (smoking) is feeding the cancer. 00:13:48.62\00:13:53.09 You can end up dying. 00:13:53.13\00:13:55.86 If you stopped right now, 00:13:55.90\00:13:57.67 you'll stop feeding the cancer. 00:13:57.70\00:13:59.77 Your immune system can get the upper hand, 00:13:59.80\00:14:02.04 leaving you cancer-free for the rest of your life. 00:14:02.07\00:14:05.17 You actually had early lung cancer. It could not 00:14:05.21\00:14:07.44 be detected, wouldn't show up on an x-ray or blood test. 00:14:07.48\00:14:10.21 Because you listened to this program, and 00:14:10.25\00:14:12.58 I encouraged you to stop smoking, you quit. 00:14:12.61\00:14:15.78 You're not going come to me, saying, 00:14:15.82\00:14:17.59 "Dr. DeRose, I'm so glad to see you! 00:14:17.62\00:14:20.02 You saved me from lung cancer." 00:14:20.06\00:14:21.52 You didn't know you had it, 00:14:21.56\00:14:22.99 but isn't that much better 00:14:23.02\00:14:24.46 than having your chest opened up, your ribs broken, 00:14:24.49\00:14:26.93 part of your lung removed? Let's move on. 00:14:26.96\00:14:30.33 Our focus is on other areas 00:14:30.37\00:14:33.34 that were highlighted in that study, such as weight. 00:14:33.37\00:14:36.60 When it comes to weight, the message is that 00:14:36.64\00:14:39.37 we should try to be as lean as possible 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.74 (within the normal range). 00:14:41.78\00:14:45.48 We're not advocating anorexia nervosa. 00:14:45.51\00:14:50.72 It means you're on a healthy lifestyle, 00:14:50.75\00:14:53.09 exercising regularly. You're taking 00:14:53.12\00:14:55.86 time to eat good, healthy foods 00:14:55.89\00:14:58.06 (giving yourself adequate time to eat meals). 00:14:58.09\00:15:00.23 You're not going to be severely underweight 00:15:00.26\00:15:02.23 (unless you have some disease process). 00:15:02.26\00:15:03.97 You will decrease dramatically 00:15:04.00\00:15:07.20 your risk of a host to cancers. That's 00:20:31.99\00:20:33.50 the "F" in LifeStart, which is very important. 00:20:33.53\00:20:36.67 Researchers are telling us we should limit our consumption of 00:20:36.70\00:20:39.67 energy-dense foods. Examples are deserts, 00:20:39.70\00:20:43.30 soft drinks, pastries, fast foods. They are a modest source 00:22:10.69\00:22:13.16 of omega-3 fat. Eat those whole plant foods, 00:22:13.19\00:22:17.43 get those omega-3 fats. 00:22:17.47\00:22:19.13 They will help you get the upper hand 00:22:19.17\00:22:22.07 when it comes to preventing cancer 00:22:22.10\00:22:24.84 naturally. In fact, researchers are telling us 00:22:24.87\00:22:28.54 to focus your attention on plant foods. 00:22:28.58\00:22:30.98 Some specific recommendations expert groups are giving us are: 00:22:31.01\00:22:42.72 That means no white bread. 00:22:42.76\00:22:44.86 It doesn't mean you can never eat it. 00:22:44.89\00:22:47.40 If you understand how powerful fiber and 00:22:47.46\00:22:52.20 phytochemicals (plant chemicals) are in preventing cancer, 00:22:52.23\00:22:55.10 you'll do what I did at one point in my life. 00:22:55.14\00:22:58.17 I had become a vegetarian, eating a lot of meat and 00:22:58.21\00:23:01.44 living the average American lifestyle. 00:23:01.48\00:23:03.91 I got serious about this as a young adult. 00:23:03.95\00:23:06.18 After I became a vegetarian, I was still eating 00:23:06.21\00:23:10.69 some refined grain products. I 00:23:10.72\00:23:12.62 was raised in an Italian home. We had a lot of white pasta. 00:23:12.65\00:23:15.62 When I started learning the science, 00:23:15.66\00:23:17.89 the health-giving properties of 00:23:17.93\00:23:19.83 fiber and phytochemicals, 00:23:19.86\00:23:21.43 I'd look at that white pasta and say, 00:23:21.46\00:23:24.50 "Why would I want to fill my stomach with this, 00:23:24.53\00:23:26.60 when I could eat the whole grain variety?" 00:23:26.63\00:23:28.64 That whole grain pasta didn't taste very good at first. 00:23:28.67\00:23:32.54 Once I got used to it, I preferred the whole grain pasta. 00:23:32.57\00:23:38.08 Are you catching the message? 00:23:38.11\00:23:39.48 If you haven't heard it before, if you haven't 00:23:39.51\00:23:41.68 heard my seminar on "Changing Bad Habits for Good," 00:23:41.72\00:23:44.49 we can develop new enjoyments. Also, 00:24:28.30\00:24:34.44 This will go a long way toward preventing 00:24:34.47\00:24:36.44 cancer. The research is very clear. 00:24:36.47\00:24:38.64 It makes a difference. 00:24:38.67\00:24:39.84 You eat these phytochemically-rich 00:24:39.87\00:24:42.64 things, and you are eating an anti-cancer diet. 00:24:42.68\00:24:46.45 Stock up on the legumes, the beans, vegetables, 00:24:46.48\00:24:50.62 and whole fruits. These are powerful 00:24:50.65\00:24:53.29 foods in preventing cancer. How do they work? 00:24:53.32\00:24:56.62 Are you aware that some of the 00:24:56.66\00:24:58.03 phytochemicals (the plant chemicals) 00:24:58.06\00:25:00.36 found in the whole plants 00:25:00.40\00:25:03.20 actually have the ability to detoxify carcinogens? 00:25:03.23\00:25:07.00 If you eat a cancer-producing compound, those 00:25:07.04\00:25:10.17 plant chemicals actually get in there and destroy 00:25:10.21\00:25:13.78 that carcinogen. Plant foods also 00:25:13.81\00:25:17.08 boost the health of the immune system. 00:25:17.11\00:25:19.51 They can actually interfere 00:25:19.55\00:25:21.18 with the work cancer tries to do, 00:25:21.22\00:25:23.32 signaling the body to give it more blood. 00:25:23.35\00:25:25.85 Plant foods can interfere with that. 00:25:25.89\00:25:28.32 The experts are telling us to 00:25:28.36\00:25:35.36 Study after study 00:25:35.40\00:25:36.60 shows connections between eating more meat, 00:25:36.63\00:25:39.77 and more cancer. 00:25:39.80\00:25:42.14 The message is pretty simple. In the food department, 00:25:42.17\00:25:45.41 we want to be plant eaters. The optimal diet is really a 00:25:45.44\00:25:49.71 whole plant foods diet. 00:25:49.74\00:25:53.08 It's powerful. 00:25:53.11\00:25:54.75 One other thing that comes up in all the recommendations is 00:25:54.78\00:25:58.62 the emphasis on avoiding alcoholic beverages. 00:25:58.65\00:26:02.62 In the World Cancer Research Fund report, 00:26:02.66\00:26:05.73 it talks about limiting alcoholic drinks. 00:26:05.76\00:26:08.13 They're being very gentle. Many expert groups 00:26:08.16\00:26:12.00 say if you're serious about decreasing your cancer risk 00:26:12.03\00:26:14.64 as much as possible, 00:26:14.67\00:26:15.84 you have got to leave the alcohol off. 00:26:15.87\00:26:18.54 A large data set has been generated by the 00:26:18.57\00:26:22.28 study known as the European 00:26:22.31\00:26:24.65 Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, 00:26:24.68\00:26:27.35 abbreviated EPIC. 00:26:27.38\00:26:28.48 It's been found convincingly that 00:26:28.52\00:26:30.22 any amount of alcohol consumption 00:26:30.25\00:26:32.12 increases the risk of cancer. The experts 00:26:32.15\00:26:35.16 are telling us to leave that off, 00:26:35.19\00:26:38.03 if you want to lower your risk of cancer optimally. 00:26:38.06\00:26:42.90 A couple of other problems are worth 00:26:42.93\00:26:45.07 noting. If you're stocking up on salty or salt- 00:26:45.10\00:26:48.37 preserved foods, these are not your friends. 00:26:48.40\00:26:51.91 The other thing may seem to go without saying, 00:26:51.94\00:26:54.78 saying, but moldy cereals and legumes 00:26:54.81\00:26:57.68 can contain carcinogenic substances. 00:26:57.71\00:27:01.05 I do enjoy peanut butter, but we do need to be careful. 00:27:01.08\00:27:05.85 Many producers are not ensuring that all those 00:27:05.89\00:27:10.33 peanuts are free from mold. 00:27:10.36\00:27:12.09 It's probably best to make your own. 00:27:12.13\00:27:13.96 The molding peanuts have a particularly nasty 00:27:14.00\00:27:18.03 compound called aflatoxin, which is a carcinogen. 00:27:18.07\00:27:23.00 Dietary supplements are not recommended, 00:27:23.04\00:27:26.44 but one that is would be vitamin D. 00:27:26.47\00:27:29.54 Vitamin D can decrease the risk of a number of cancers, 00:27:29.58\00:27:32.51 such as prostate, colon, breast, and lung cancer. 00:27:32.55\00:27:35.68 Get out in the sun. Don't burn, don't get too much. 00:27:35.72\00:27:39.25 If you can't get enough sunshine to make enough 00:27:39.29\00:27:41.39 vitamin D, and you've had your blood checked, 00:27:41.42\00:27:43.36 take a supplement.
