Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.86\00:00:29.56 This is a program consciously designed 00:00:29.59\00:00:32.86 to clarify things for you on religious liberty. 00:00:32.89\00:00:36.63 While we often feature events in the United States, 00:00:36.67\00:00:39.57 it's a global concern. 00:00:39.60\00:00:41.80 My name is Lincoln Steed, 00:00:41.84\00:00:43.91 for 22 years editor of Liberty magazine, 00:00:43.94\00:00:46.37 and nearly as long as the host of this show, 00:00:46.41\00:00:49.04 and those of you 00:00:49.08\00:00:50.41 that have regularly watched this know 00:00:50.45\00:00:52.05 that our normal setup is for me 00:00:52.08\00:00:54.48 to have a guest and to dialogue with them. 00:00:54.52\00:00:56.82 But on this program and several others, 00:00:56.85\00:00:58.79 I intend to just talk directly to you. 00:00:58.82\00:01:03.32 I'm sure over the years you've heard me 00:01:03.36\00:01:06.73 mention the book, The Great Controversy. 00:01:06.76\00:01:08.96 And for Seventh-day Adventists, 00:01:09.00\00:01:10.33 this is a rather important book. 00:01:10.37\00:01:12.80 It was written by Ellen White, 00:01:12.83\00:01:15.24 who together with her husband James White 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.51 were in essence the co-founders 00:01:17.54\00:01:19.34 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:19.37\00:01:21.28 They and others of their era 00:01:21.31\00:01:24.81 had gone through what was known as The Great Disappointment. 00:01:24.85\00:01:27.95 They had followed 00:01:27.98\00:01:29.68 a Bible teacher and leader, William Miller, 00:01:29.72\00:01:35.26 who was studying prophecy and became convinced 00:01:35.29\00:01:37.63 that 1844 was to be the return, literal return of Jesus Christ. 00:01:37.66\00:01:42.16 Obviously, they had their numbers wrong. 00:01:42.20\00:01:44.63 And even before 00:01:44.67\00:01:46.00 the Adventist Church was formed, 00:01:46.03\00:01:47.44 Ellen and James White and others saw this 00:01:47.47\00:01:50.81 at first on a bitter experience of standing, waiting 00:01:50.84\00:01:54.74 at the moment that it was predicted 00:01:54.78\00:01:56.64 that didn't happen. 00:01:56.68\00:01:58.55 And then in looking more closely 00:01:58.58\00:02:00.52 at how prophecies to be interpreted, 00:02:00.55\00:02:02.62 she realized that I think 00:02:02.65\00:02:04.42 all honest Christians see now that as Jesus said, 00:02:04.45\00:02:08.56 "It's not given to you to know the day and the hour." 00:02:08.59\00:02:12.06 He says, "He will come like a thief 00:02:12.09\00:02:13.43 in the night." 00:02:13.46\00:02:14.80 But it is given to us as the upbraid of the Pharisees 00:02:14.83\00:02:17.87 for not understanding the time of His appearance. 00:02:17.90\00:02:20.44 He says, "You study the seasons, 00:02:20.47\00:02:22.14 you should know the appropriate time 00:02:22.17\00:02:24.44 for the fulfillment of these events." 00:02:24.47\00:02:26.41 And I think it's arguable that we are living 00:02:26.44\00:02:29.38 in the end times portrayed in the Bible, 00:02:29.41\00:02:32.95 and in particular in the Book of Revelation. 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.35 And Ellen White wrote Great Controversy 00:02:35.38\00:02:39.12 at a very interesting time in US history 00:02:39.15\00:02:42.89 and in Adventist history. 00:02:42.92\00:02:45.46 In the year 1888, 00:02:45.49\00:02:48.50 the Adventist Church was very small, 00:02:48.53\00:02:51.23 was only a few tens of thousands of members. 00:02:51.27\00:02:54.14 It was growing quickly. 00:02:54.17\00:02:55.50 And today it's many millions of people, 00:02:55.54\00:02:57.24 I think, somewhere around 15 million worldwide. 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.58 But it was very small back then. 00:03:00.61\00:03:03.04 They had just established a religious liberty work, 00:03:03.08\00:03:06.92 and Alonzo T. Jones, AT 00:03:06.95\00:03:10.32 which used to be the style 00:03:10.35\00:03:13.59 and someone that was powerful, 00:03:13.62\00:03:15.06 you know, just have their initials AT Jones 00:03:15.09\00:03:18.19 was editing that magazine, the Liberty precursor. 00:03:18.23\00:03:22.23 And suddenly religious liberty 00:03:22.26\00:03:24.20 which had always been important for a group 00:03:24.23\00:03:26.80 that had come through the ridicule 00:03:26.84\00:03:28.84 of the failed expectation 00:03:28.87\00:03:30.64 who had been injected from their churches, 00:03:30.67\00:03:33.48 many of them because they believe things 00:03:33.51\00:03:35.38 that were objectionable, 00:03:35.41\00:03:36.98 who had been harassed by authorities 00:03:37.01\00:03:39.41 for disobeying the blue laws, 00:03:39.45\00:03:42.02 which were common back then 00:03:42.05\00:03:43.39 and are still on the books 00:03:43.42\00:03:44.75 in about 20 states blue laws that, 00:03:44.79\00:03:46.79 that find criminalized on occasion work 00:03:46.82\00:03:51.23 and different activities on Sunday, 00:03:51.26\00:03:53.13 the nominal Lord's Day of the society, 00:03:53.16\00:03:56.33 never biblically correct 00:03:56.36\00:03:59.50 and certainly not legally appropriate 00:03:59.53\00:04:03.10 since the First Amendment grants religious freedom, 00:04:03.14\00:04:06.61 but the states back then were penalizing people 00:04:06.64\00:04:09.81 that didn't worship on the Sunday. 00:04:09.84\00:04:12.45 So Seventh-day Adventists had this long concern, 00:04:12.48\00:04:15.48 but in 1888, 00:04:15.52\00:04:16.99 something quite galvanizing happened. 00:04:17.02\00:04:20.09 There was a proposal in the Senate 00:04:20.12\00:04:24.03 for a national Sunday law and not a blue law 00:04:24.06\00:04:27.60 that might find you for doing this 00:04:27.63\00:04:28.96 and that and the other. 00:04:29.00\00:04:30.33 A law that overtly said that that day was to be... 00:04:30.37\00:04:33.74 It was under pain of loyal forbidden 00:04:33.77\00:04:35.84 from doing any commercial or regular secular activities. 00:04:35.87\00:04:40.48 And you were to worship on the... 00:04:40.51\00:04:43.04 As I said the Lord's Day. 00:04:43.08\00:04:45.91 It was a Sunday law which Adventists 00:04:45.95\00:04:48.42 already by studying prophecy had said, 00:04:48.45\00:04:53.89 "A strong push to enforce a false day of worship." 00:04:53.92\00:04:59.33 And I must tell you, on religious liberty, 00:04:59.36\00:05:01.76 by definition, 00:05:01.80\00:05:03.13 any enforced day of worship is false. 00:05:03.16\00:05:05.80 Biblically, the seventh day Sabbath 00:05:05.83\00:05:07.94 is the day given under the Ten Commandments 00:05:07.97\00:05:10.41 and no direct command 00:05:10.44\00:05:13.01 as the papal document Dies Domini says, 00:05:13.04\00:05:15.81 "There's no direct command of the Lord to change it." 00:05:15.84\00:05:18.78 I mean, they did. 00:05:18.81\00:05:20.15 And the early Christians, some of them felt free to, 00:05:20.18\00:05:22.78 but there was no command. 00:05:22.82\00:05:24.32 So it's a binding day, 00:05:24.35\00:05:25.92 but from the principle of religious liberty, 00:05:25.95\00:05:29.02 if the United States 00:05:29.06\00:05:30.39 or any country would bring in a law, 00:05:30.43\00:05:32.43 compelling worship on the seventh day Sabbath, 00:05:32.46\00:05:35.96 it would be wrong, because that is not the way 00:05:36.00\00:05:40.37 that God ever worked with man to compel them 00:05:40.40\00:05:43.24 against their will, 00:05:43.27\00:05:44.61 to worship Him in the way 00:05:44.64\00:05:47.28 He would find acceptable, 00:05:47.31\00:05:48.64 because it even says in the Old Testament, 00:05:48.68\00:05:50.75 you know, I find no pleasure in the sacrifice of animals, 00:05:50.78\00:05:54.72 you know, He wanted heart worship. 00:05:54.75\00:05:57.52 But still, 00:05:57.55\00:05:58.89 to add further insult to the wrong dynamic, 00:05:58.92\00:06:01.59 it was on a Sunday, a false day, 00:06:01.62\00:06:05.36 and AT Jones was quite involved in challenging this legally. 00:06:05.39\00:06:09.70 He gave testimony 00:06:09.73\00:06:11.07 before a congressional committee. 00:06:11.10\00:06:14.14 And then spoke many, many times to the Adventist community 00:06:14.17\00:06:17.64 about the danger of this and the prophetic significance 00:06:17.67\00:06:22.14 that it signaled the very imminent 00:06:22.18\00:06:24.15 return of Christ. 00:06:24.18\00:06:26.31 So in that context, 00:06:26.35\00:06:27.92 Ellen White wrote this book Great Controversy, 00:06:27.95\00:06:31.19 which tells the great sweep of human events 00:06:31.22\00:06:35.79 and God's dealings with humans, 00:06:35.82\00:06:37.89 really from the earliest times 00:06:37.93\00:06:39.76 right through till His appearance, 00:06:39.79\00:06:43.10 tell the story of the reformation 00:06:43.13\00:06:44.63 of efforts to restrict liberty of conscience. 00:06:44.67\00:06:47.14 It tells in advance, and we believe 00:06:47.17\00:06:50.71 it was divinely explicated to her, 00:06:50.74\00:06:53.44 tell us in advance how even in the United States, 00:06:53.48\00:06:57.65 religious liberty will be restricted, 00:06:57.68\00:07:00.62 and people will turn against those 00:07:00.65\00:07:03.32 who persist in keeping the Lord's Day as Saturday 00:07:03.35\00:07:08.12 and honoring it. 00:07:08.16\00:07:09.66 I want to read you a couple of selections 00:07:09.69\00:07:12.79 from this book. 00:07:12.83\00:07:14.63 But before I do, 00:07:14.66\00:07:16.00 let me just tell you one example, 00:07:16.03\00:07:17.70 where I found it most illuminating 00:07:17.73\00:07:20.44 to be familiar with this book. 00:07:20.47\00:07:23.81 In 2015, I think it was, the Pope of Rome 00:07:23.84\00:07:27.94 came and addressed the joint session of Congress. 00:07:27.98\00:07:32.01 To me, that was a massive moment. 00:07:32.05\00:07:35.95 Massive historically, because up until that point, 00:07:35.98\00:07:38.72 no religious leader had ever spoken to a joint session. 00:07:38.75\00:07:43.83 The few that addressed legislators 00:07:43.86\00:07:46.76 were like Lafayette, 00:07:46.80\00:07:51.33 the Prime Minister of Israel a couple of times, 00:07:51.37\00:07:56.14 you know, major world figures, Winston Churchill, 00:07:56.17\00:07:58.51 I think twice, no religious leader. 00:07:58.54\00:08:01.31 And in fact, a few months before the pope came, 00:08:01.34\00:08:04.88 there was a suggestion that the Dalai Lama 00:08:04.91\00:08:07.22 might address Congress. 00:08:07.25\00:08:08.58 And that was quickly nixed, 00:08:08.62\00:08:10.59 because it was said he would be a divisive figure. 00:08:10.62\00:08:13.79 Why? I don't know. 00:08:13.82\00:08:15.16 I mean, I don't personally 00:08:15.19\00:08:17.73 go along with his whole Buddhist philosophy, 00:08:17.76\00:08:19.83 but he's certainly a benign grandfatherly figure. 00:08:19.86\00:08:22.86 But it would be wrong for such prominence to be given 00:08:22.90\00:08:27.97 to religious leader in Congress, 00:08:28.00\00:08:29.94 as it was wrong for the pope to speak, 00:08:29.97\00:08:33.78 but it was agreed and it was a historic moment. 00:08:33.81\00:08:38.28 As I say, no other religious leader 00:08:38.31\00:08:40.62 beyond that... 00:08:40.65\00:08:44.49 No Catholic in previous years 00:08:44.52\00:08:47.92 would have ever been let near Congress, 00:08:47.96\00:08:50.23 which was a sign of prejudice. 00:08:50.26\00:08:52.83 You can't endorse the previous attitudes. 00:08:52.86\00:08:56.06 But given that the United States society 00:08:56.10\00:08:58.47 was so overwhelmingly Protestant, 00:08:58.50\00:09:01.80 and at times violently, anti-Catholic, 00:09:01.84\00:09:05.37 the Ku Klux Klan was not just racist, 00:09:05.41\00:09:08.08 it was anti-Catholic and anti-Jew. 00:09:08.11\00:09:10.28 They wanted a white Protestant America. 00:09:10.31\00:09:13.55 Roman Catholics were persecuted 00:09:13.58\00:09:16.52 openly in New York City in the mid 1800s. 00:09:16.55\00:09:21.29 I remember reading about one crowd of several thousand 00:09:21.32\00:09:24.23 that rampaged for a whole weekend 00:09:24.26\00:09:26.09 through New York, 00:09:26.13\00:09:27.46 killing every Catholic like the lay their hands on. 00:09:27.50\00:09:31.40 Bad history. 00:09:31.43\00:09:32.83 But given all of that, 00:09:32.87\00:09:34.80 now the pope brought in as a conquering hero, 00:09:34.84\00:09:37.44 amazing. 00:09:37.47\00:09:39.21 So, and then from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective, 00:09:39.24\00:09:43.81 we are told that when Romanism, the Church of the Medieval Era, 00:09:43.85\00:09:49.62 which by its own accounting did things 00:09:49.65\00:09:53.39 that were horribly wrong. 00:09:53.42\00:09:55.46 Now there's a document that Rome came out 00:09:55.49\00:09:57.23 with called Memory and Reconciliation, 00:09:57.26\00:10:00.30 where they apologized for the Inquisition, 00:10:00.33\00:10:04.00 for the persecution of the Jews and on and on. 00:10:04.03\00:10:07.04 Unfortunately, they kept the magisterium intact, 00:10:07.07\00:10:11.44 their sign of authority, their right to do that, 00:10:11.47\00:10:14.54 but they apologized for what they did. 00:10:14.58\00:10:16.28 But the point is, 00:10:16.31\00:10:18.05 there's no defense of what happened then. 00:10:18.08\00:10:20.18 And this was the mainline church 00:10:20.22\00:10:22.05 and Protestantism separated from it 00:10:22.08\00:10:25.12 for problems of doctrinal disharmony 00:10:25.15\00:10:29.66 or disturbances, false day of worship and so on. 00:10:29.69\00:10:34.23 And also because of its corruption 00:10:34.26\00:10:38.23 and paganism. 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.77 So for the United States, 00:10:40.80\00:10:45.04 once Protestant country to then 00:10:45.07\00:10:46.84 think very benignly on Romanism. 00:10:46.88\00:10:49.74 Seventh-day Adventists felt, 00:10:49.78\00:10:51.88 and are convinced is a fulfillment of prophecy. 00:10:51.91\00:10:55.08 In Revelation it's, and in Daniel it speaks about 00:10:55.12\00:10:59.19 a power that has been wounded, 00:10:59.22\00:11:01.79 and speaking against the Most High 00:11:01.82\00:11:03.69 and changing times and seasons, 00:11:03.73\00:11:05.83 all markers of false Sabbaths and so on, 00:11:05.86\00:11:08.83 that it will, the whole world will wonder after it, 00:11:08.86\00:11:11.57 and it will be reinstated. 00:11:11.60\00:11:13.10 And Seventh-day Adventist see in the elevation 00:11:13.13\00:11:15.90 of the modern papacy, 00:11:15.94\00:11:17.41 which has every right to exist. 00:11:17.44\00:11:20.38 All religions, and on this whole spectrum 00:11:20.41\00:11:23.71 under the principle of religious liberty 00:11:23.75\00:11:25.88 absolutely should be allowed to function. 00:11:25.91\00:11:28.38 You restrict any religion, 00:11:28.42\00:11:30.05 and you're struck against the principle 00:11:30.09\00:11:31.62 of religious freedom. 00:11:31.65\00:11:32.99 But from an Adventist perspective, 00:11:33.02\00:11:34.92 looking at truth and error and prophetic developments, 00:11:34.96\00:11:38.76 this was very problematic. 00:11:38.79\00:11:40.83 And I can remember on that day 00:11:40.86\00:11:42.33 after I went and heard the pope speech, 00:11:42.36\00:11:45.13 that pope's speech 00:11:45.17\00:11:46.50 which was benign on the face of it, 00:11:46.53\00:11:49.37 but he was lecturing the legislators. 00:11:49.40\00:11:52.11 And when I came back to the office, 00:11:52.14\00:11:54.38 we had a board meeting. 00:11:54.41\00:11:57.15 And I was quite excited 00:11:57.18\00:11:58.51 that I'd heard this historic moment 00:11:58.55\00:12:01.45 for the United States and this prophetic moment 00:12:01.48\00:12:03.89 for a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:12:03.92\00:12:05.92 And as I was talking about it, 00:12:05.95\00:12:08.82 two of the lawyers that were in that group, 00:12:08.86\00:12:11.33 and I won't name them for their protection 00:12:11.36\00:12:13.23 and not to embarrass them. 00:12:13.26\00:12:15.63 They started mocking me and they said, "Big deal. 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.60 He's not bringing the Sunday law." 00:12:18.63\00:12:21.17 And I said, well, I didn't say that. 00:12:21.20\00:12:25.74 But I said, "You haven't read The Great Controversy, 00:12:25.77\00:12:28.01 have you?" 00:12:28.04\00:12:29.84 And no answer. 00:12:29.88\00:12:31.71 And I realized in a moment 00:12:31.75\00:12:33.35 that it's likely that they hadn't, 00:12:33.38\00:12:35.98 and it's certain that many of my fellow members 00:12:36.02\00:12:39.09 haven't read it. 00:12:39.12\00:12:40.46 And it's equally certain that not enough 00:12:40.49\00:12:42.46 of the general populace have been exposed to this book 00:12:42.49\00:12:45.46 that's been sold door to door for 100 years. 00:12:45.49\00:12:49.66 It does lay it out very well. 00:12:49.70\00:12:51.70 And I want to share with you after the break, 00:12:51.73\00:12:55.44 just a little bit that's in the book. 00:12:55.47\00:12:57.61 I mean, it's hundreds of pages, 00:12:57.64\00:12:59.44 but just to give you a flavor of it, 00:12:59.47\00:13:01.64 but we are living through momentous times. 00:13:01.68\00:13:05.81 And on this program before I've mentioned 00:13:05.85\00:13:08.05 a comment made by ex-President Adams 00:13:08.08\00:13:12.25 in his dialogue by mail with Thomas Jefferson, 00:13:12.29\00:13:16.06 interesting characters of yesteryear 00:13:16.09\00:13:19.53 and the battles that they had, 00:13:19.56\00:13:20.90 bitter political enemies, 00:13:20.93\00:13:22.26 even though Jefferson had been vice president under Adams. 00:13:22.30\00:13:27.54 But they were opposite spectrums, politically. 00:13:27.57\00:13:30.44 But they wrote letters 00:13:30.47\00:13:31.81 until they died on the very same day, 00:13:31.84\00:13:33.54 50 years after the Declaration of Independence. 00:13:33.58\00:13:36.34 And as he died, Adams cried out, he says, 00:13:36.38\00:13:39.95 "But he still lives." 00:13:39.98\00:13:42.18 And unknown to him, Jefferson had preceded him 00:13:42.22\00:13:44.89 by some time a couple of hours. 00:13:44.92\00:13:48.72 In their dialogue, they debated at one point 00:13:48.76\00:13:51.83 whether or not Christianity would survive 00:13:51.86\00:13:54.53 in the United States. 00:13:54.56\00:13:55.90 An interesting question. 00:13:55.93\00:13:59.10 Jefferson didn't think it would. 00:13:59.13\00:14:00.84 But Adams said, "Yes, it will survive." 00:14:04.14\00:14:06.27 But he said, "First, for it to survive, 00:14:06.31\00:14:08.88 he says that Hindu cabbalistic system 00:14:08.91\00:14:11.88 known as Roman Catholicism must pass away." 00:14:11.91\00:14:16.55 But he says, "At present it has a mortal wound, 00:14:16.58\00:14:19.45 but such is its strength 00:14:19.49\00:14:20.86 that it may last 200 years yet." 00:14:20.89\00:14:23.26 He was repeating the outline from the Bible, 00:14:23.29\00:14:27.20 from the Book of Daniel, and the Protestant concept 00:14:27.23\00:14:30.77 of the role of the Roman Catholic Church. 00:14:30.80\00:14:33.23 And we're here 200 years later, 00:14:33.27\00:14:35.37 of course, Rome is dominant, 00:14:35.40\00:14:38.31 far more dominant than any single 00:14:38.34\00:14:40.31 Protestant organization. 00:14:40.34\00:14:42.98 Stay with me and after the break, 00:14:43.01\00:14:44.55 I'll share a few words with you. 00:14:44.58\00:14:46.88
