Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.87\00:00:08.67 Before the break, 00:00:08.70\00:00:10.37 I was trying to set the scene from John, 00:00:10.41\00:00:15.78 the Gospel of John, where a ruler in Israel, 00:00:15.81\00:00:18.68 Nicodemus came by night that says to talk with Jesus. 00:00:18.71\00:00:24.25 Of course, by then Jesus 00:00:24.29\00:00:26.99 was making a big fuss in the land. 00:00:27.02\00:00:30.13 People were following Him, crowds of people were told 00:00:30.16\00:00:33.09 not just His 12 disciples, not just the women, 00:00:33.13\00:00:37.33 if you read the gospels, clearly, 00:00:37.37\00:00:38.93 there are a large number of women 00:00:38.97\00:00:40.34 that traveled with them often 00:00:40.37\00:00:42.74 as well as bringing them food and sustenance. 00:00:42.77\00:00:46.74 Like one of the followers, women followers of Jesus 00:00:46.78\00:00:49.41 was the wife of Herod's steward. 00:00:49.44\00:00:53.25 If you read these books carefully, 00:00:53.28\00:00:54.82 you find an inter relationship that's quite amazing. 00:00:54.85\00:00:57.99 When Jesus, during his passion was taken before Herod, 00:00:58.02\00:01:03.22 remember Herod had heard about him, 00:01:03.26\00:01:04.59 it says, and so he asked Him to do a miracle. 00:01:04.63\00:01:07.23 Well, he certainly would have heard about 00:01:07.26\00:01:09.10 Jesus through his steward, 00:01:09.13\00:01:11.03 his top official in the household. 00:01:11.07\00:01:14.64 And then there was not just the 70 that Jesus sent out 00:01:14.67\00:01:18.27 throughout the towns 00:01:18.31\00:01:19.64 and villages of that whole area. 00:01:19.67\00:01:21.71 There was, Jesus was a phenomenon, 00:01:21.74\00:01:24.81 it's quite obvious. 00:01:24.85\00:01:26.55 And here this ruler in Israel came singly, 00:01:26.58\00:01:29.95 it seems, at night to talk to Jesus. 00:01:29.98\00:01:33.15 And earlier I said, I let him off the hook a bit, 00:01:33.19\00:01:35.26 I don't think he was afraid to see Jesus. 00:01:35.29\00:01:39.53 If he had any fear, 00:01:39.56\00:01:40.90 it might have been that his fellow, 00:01:40.93\00:01:43.13 fellows on the ruling council might have sneered at him. 00:01:43.16\00:01:47.44 But he just came in a natural time 00:01:47.47\00:01:49.54 after the business of the day, 00:01:49.57\00:01:51.34 when people typically to this day 00:01:51.37\00:01:53.17 in that part of the world, sit around and talk and, 00:01:53.21\00:01:57.95 you know, have refreshments 00:01:57.98\00:02:00.02 and enjoy the cool which they couldn't 00:02:00.05\00:02:01.75 during the non-air conditioned environment before. 00:02:01.78\00:02:05.75 And so Nicodemus came and asked, and Jesus said, 00:02:05.79\00:02:08.72 you must be born again. 00:02:08.76\00:02:11.13 And it's troubled me greatly that in the United States 00:02:11.16\00:02:14.30 where there's a lot of talk of religion, 00:02:14.33\00:02:15.93 which is a sign of a great heritage, 00:02:15.96\00:02:19.33 because religious liberty is part of the history 00:02:19.37\00:02:22.80 and indeed even the mythology 00:02:22.84\00:02:24.47 of the founding of the United States. 00:02:24.51\00:02:26.91 A country that is secular, 00:02:26.94\00:02:29.48 the government is calculatedly secular, 00:02:29.51\00:02:32.61 but the history of the United States 00:02:32.65\00:02:34.68 before the country was even formed 00:02:34.72\00:02:36.82 before the War of Independence, 00:02:36.85\00:02:40.46 there were indeed a number of Puritan settlements 00:02:40.49\00:02:44.46 that were done for an overtly religious reason. 00:02:44.49\00:02:48.13 Even in that era, there were a number of people 00:02:48.16\00:02:51.43 escaping persecution 00:02:51.47\00:02:52.97 from the wars of religion in Europe. 00:02:53.00\00:02:55.00 And after the United States was founded even, 00:02:55.04\00:02:57.87 a number of refugee groups 00:02:57.91\00:03:00.61 came from some overtly religious reasons. 00:03:00.64\00:03:03.85 I live in Maryland. 00:03:03.88\00:03:05.75 And I'm right near the Pennsylvania border. 00:03:05.78\00:03:08.58 And I can tell you, there's a lot of Amish 00:03:08.62\00:03:11.09 and Mennonite people up in that area. 00:03:11.12\00:03:14.29 And, of course, the Anabaptists and they fled persecution. 00:03:14.32\00:03:17.79 So that part of the narrative is true, 00:03:17.83\00:03:20.36 even though we're a secular government. 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.83 But that said, the religious nature 00:03:23.87\00:03:26.33 of the United States has changed radically. 00:03:26.37\00:03:29.64 And the efforts now to gain 00:03:29.67\00:03:33.27 what is seen as religious liberty 00:03:33.31\00:03:35.61 often are a privilege state 00:03:35.64\00:03:40.68 for a certain particular religious viewpoint, 00:03:40.72\00:03:43.22 not necessarily a broad waterfront of rights 00:03:43.25\00:03:46.89 for people of faith to exist in the secular community. 00:03:46.92\00:03:51.43 And what I think is missing, I've analyzed this 00:03:51.46\00:03:54.76 and looked at it many 00:03:54.80\00:03:56.60 which ways and I've come to believe that 00:03:56.63\00:03:59.63 what is usually missing is the spirituality 00:03:59.67\00:04:02.90 that gives charity and, you know, 00:04:02.94\00:04:08.48 deep religious tint to religious activities, 00:04:08.51\00:04:12.58 without that it's just an organization. 00:04:12.61\00:04:14.38 It's just a pressure group. 00:04:14.42\00:04:16.89 It's just a special interest group. 00:04:16.92\00:04:19.35 And I've listened to the religious right. 00:04:19.39\00:04:22.72 And they don't talk much about the new birth, 00:04:22.76\00:04:26.29 a total sea change in thinking that 00:04:26.33\00:04:28.73 brings a spiritual "otherworldliness." 00:04:28.76\00:04:32.23 It's not that you're removed from this world, 00:04:32.27\00:04:34.14 but you're, as the Bible says your things 00:04:34.17\00:04:36.24 are set up, your mind is set upon 00:04:36.27\00:04:38.17 the things that are above. 00:04:38.21\00:04:40.68 When that is the case, 00:04:40.71\00:04:42.98 I believe religious liberty 00:04:43.01\00:04:44.65 is advanced a little differently 00:04:44.68\00:04:46.08 than the often overtly political way that 00:04:46.11\00:04:49.75 we're seeing today and not talk about that. 00:04:49.78\00:04:54.49 Instead, what is characterized 00:04:54.52\00:04:56.76 a lot of the religious expression 00:04:56.79\00:04:58.86 in the political and public sense 00:04:58.89\00:05:01.80 has been talked about Dominionism. 00:05:01.83\00:05:04.57 The power, the control that was given to God's faithful, 00:05:04.60\00:05:09.97 they say, starting with the Garden of Eden 00:05:10.01\00:05:14.34 when dominion over the creatures 00:05:14.38\00:05:16.98 was given to Adam and Eve. 00:05:17.01\00:05:19.58 I read into that form of Dominion really custody, 00:05:19.61\00:05:23.39 and the obligation to care for things, 00:05:23.42\00:05:26.76 but Dominionism as it's written in our era, 00:05:26.79\00:05:29.99 is really people of a Christian or religious profession, 00:05:30.03\00:05:33.46 having the right to mind to the heart's content, 00:05:33.50\00:05:37.73 to deny environmental change, 00:05:37.77\00:05:40.90 and say that, you know, 00:05:40.94\00:05:42.27 it's not happening first of all, 00:05:42.30\00:05:43.64 but you know, we'll do whatever we want to. 00:05:43.67\00:05:47.08 I really don't see Dominionism able to be 00:05:47.11\00:05:51.11 expressed anywhere near the way it is now, 00:05:51.15\00:05:53.18 if the emphasis was on spirituality 00:05:53.21\00:05:56.02 and the new birth, 00:05:56.05\00:05:57.72 and I believe that's what's missing. 00:05:57.75\00:06:01.29 Over the recent years, 00:06:01.32\00:06:03.22 I've often reached back into history 00:06:03.26\00:06:05.83 for some of my examples. 00:06:05.86\00:06:07.86 And as a six or seven year old, 00:06:07.90\00:06:11.20 I was very enamored 00:06:11.23\00:06:12.60 with John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. 00:06:12.63\00:06:15.60 And I think even on this program, 00:06:15.64\00:06:17.04 I've told about attending the summer 10th session 00:06:17.07\00:06:20.61 as a child where 00:06:20.64\00:06:21.98 they were serializing that story. 00:06:22.01\00:06:25.21 Exciting, but I've been taken 00:06:25.25\00:06:27.88 recently to not just read Pilgrim's Progress, 00:06:27.92\00:06:30.19 but to go and read John Bunyan's own testimony. 00:06:30.22\00:06:33.72 And he tells there, how he was a foul mouthed. 00:06:33.76\00:06:37.16 He was a Christian, 00:06:37.19\00:06:38.53 in a general sense enough to be afraid of the judgment. 00:06:38.56\00:06:42.86 But he fought in the Civil War on the parliamentary side, 00:06:42.90\00:06:45.80 but alongside the Puritans. 00:06:45.83\00:06:48.97 But he had no real religion at that point. 00:06:49.00\00:06:51.74 He was foul mouthed, gambler, cheater, and all the rest. 00:06:51.77\00:06:56.01 But slowly he saw the attraction in people 00:06:56.04\00:06:59.91 that knew God that had a heavenly sensibility. 00:06:59.95\00:07:02.88 And he said, he, even though 00:07:02.92\00:07:04.95 he thought he knew the Bible, 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.32 he didn't understand its root emphasis. 00:07:06.35\00:07:12.39 He didn't understand the deeper spiritual meaning 00:07:12.43\00:07:14.83 until he met some poor, simple Christian women, 00:07:14.86\00:07:19.07 talking about the grace of God 00:07:19.10\00:07:21.34 and what He had done in their lives. 00:07:21.37\00:07:23.10 And then John Bunyan said, by this, he says, 00:07:23.14\00:07:26.44 my mind was so fixed on spiritual things 00:07:26.47\00:07:30.05 that it was like a horse leech at the vein, 00:07:30.08\00:07:34.78 you know, a big horse leech 00:07:34.82\00:07:37.22 sucking the blood out of the vein. 00:07:37.25\00:07:39.15 And he says, and crying more, more, more. 00:07:39.19\00:07:44.83 You know, that's what the Bible is calling us all toward, 00:07:44.86\00:07:47.70 a spiritual hunger that can be only fulfilled 00:07:47.73\00:07:52.00 when you have the sensibility that appreciates it. 00:07:52.03\00:07:55.44 Without that religion is a pernicious force. 00:07:55.47\00:07:59.31 And this is the greatest irony of our age, 00:07:59.34\00:08:02.84 and age, very much like 00:08:02.88\00:08:04.95 what the Old Testament talks about 00:08:04.98\00:08:06.51 in the time of the judges, 00:08:06.55\00:08:08.35 when the Word of God was rare in those days, 00:08:08.38\00:08:12.52 as it says, the prophets were not obvious. 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.89 The theocracy is long since gone. 00:08:15.92\00:08:18.59 And it says every man did what was right in his own eyes. 00:08:18.63\00:08:23.26 When you have the new birth, 00:08:23.30\00:08:24.63 you don't do what's right in your own eyes. 00:08:24.67\00:08:27.27 You do what is natural, to someone that's hungering 00:08:27.30\00:08:32.31 and searching after righteousness, 00:08:32.34\00:08:34.41 to use the Bible term. 00:08:34.44\00:08:37.58 That's what's needed in the US today. 00:08:37.61\00:08:39.35 And as we head into great stresses, 00:08:39.38\00:08:43.18 COVID just one of them, 00:08:43.22\00:08:45.19 economic collapse or an economic... 00:08:45.22\00:08:48.46 Collapse is a strong word, but an economic wakeup times 00:08:48.49\00:08:52.09 certain to come in the very near future, 00:08:52.13\00:08:55.43 probably more extreme than 2008. 00:08:55.46\00:08:59.17 As we head into a continued round of natural disasters, 00:08:59.20\00:09:04.97 that seemed to be just increasing in severity 00:09:05.01\00:09:08.34 and frequency, 00:09:08.38\00:09:09.88 and they're draining the treasury, 00:09:09.91\00:09:11.81 something extraordinary will have to be done 00:09:11.85\00:09:15.18 to keep our society together. 00:09:15.22\00:09:17.62 And something extraordinary needs to be done 00:09:17.65\00:09:20.26 to defend religious and other civil liberties in a time 00:09:20.29\00:09:24.06 when it would seem that all these must be 00:09:24.09\00:09:25.79 thrown out for survival sake. 00:09:25.83\00:09:30.97 In this era, we are lost on religious liberty 00:09:31.00\00:09:35.67 unless we see it in the context 00:09:35.70\00:09:38.97 of the changed heart and mind 00:09:39.01\00:09:45.31 that comes from a spiritual, new love experience. 00:09:45.35\00:09:50.85 Else it's just a mechanical thing that 00:09:50.89\00:09:53.46 the courts can look at and, 00:09:53.49\00:09:55.56 you know, nod toward and pass it off. 00:09:55.59\00:09:58.03 It also could easily be 00:09:58.06\00:09:59.39 what often happens in the workplace, 00:09:59.43\00:10:00.90 someone wants the Sabbath accommodation. 00:10:00.93\00:10:03.33 And under the present system, it's just as likely, 00:10:03.37\00:10:07.04 since the employer has the whip hand on this, 00:10:07.07\00:10:09.94 yes, I'll give you this weekend off, 00:10:09.97\00:10:11.97 but I can't give you next weekend. 00:10:12.01\00:10:13.88 That's not religious accommodation. 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.34 And if your heart is overflowing 00:10:16.38\00:10:18.25 with love for God, 00:10:18.28\00:10:19.75 you don't serve Him by halves, 00:10:19.78\00:10:21.72 you serve Him with your whole heart and your mind. 00:10:21.75\00:10:26.22 And the trick is how to do that 00:10:26.25\00:10:28.62 in an increasingly secular society, 00:10:28.66\00:10:31.19 a society that is forgetting its norms, 00:10:31.23\00:10:34.00 and the society just like Nicodemus, 00:10:34.03\00:10:36.06 that needs to be reminded that you must be born again. 00:10:36.10\00:10:41.57 Western history and Christianity 00:10:45.41\00:10:47.78 took quite a turn, 00:10:47.81\00:10:50.25 when would be emperor Constantine said that 00:10:50.28\00:10:54.35 he saw a vision in the sky of a cross, 00:10:54.38\00:10:57.02 and a voice that said, by the sign you will conquer. 00:10:57.05\00:11:00.36 You know, that's the stuff of legend. 00:11:00.39\00:11:02.02 But in the record of history, 00:11:02.06\00:11:04.59 it led Christianity in quite a dark alley, 00:11:04.63\00:11:08.10 compulsion, state religion and so on. 00:11:08.13\00:11:11.93 But what was missing from that, in my view, was any evidence 00:11:11.97\00:11:15.50 that Constantine had a heart change. 00:11:15.54\00:11:18.71 What we need today and what's always needed. 00:11:18.74\00:11:22.61 As one writer that I read, speaking about Christ, 00:11:22.64\00:11:25.11 the Christ we forget, he said, 00:11:25.15\00:11:26.88 we need once more that living Christ, 00:11:26.92\00:11:29.32 not a crucifix, not as an image, 00:11:29.35\00:11:31.79 but as a living dynamic presence in our heart. 00:11:31.82\00:11:35.22 With that present, 00:11:35.26\00:11:36.62 any discussion of religious liberty 00:11:36.66\00:11:38.36 takes its rightful place in the rights 00:11:38.39\00:11:41.83 and privileges of the modern era. 00:11:41.86\00:11:43.97 Without it, it's dead. 00:11:44.00\00:11:46.70 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:46.74\00:11:49.60
