Welcome back to the Liberty Insider, 00:00:06.60\00:00:08.44 before the break with Liberty editor Bettina Crouse, 00:00:08.47\00:00:13.31 and that's hard for me to say because I was Liberty 00:00:13.34\00:00:15.64 editor for 22 years. 00:00:15.68\00:00:17.01 But with Bettina, we were talking about 00:00:17.05\00:00:19.41 her philosophy on editing 00:00:19.45\00:00:21.72 and dealing with religious liberty, 00:00:21.75\00:00:23.32 editing Liberty Magazine. 00:00:23.35\00:00:26.45 And this is my chance to suss out 00:00:26.49\00:00:30.56 what she's likely to do as editor. 00:00:30.59\00:00:33.09 Bettina, let me put a challenge to you though. 00:00:33.13\00:00:36.00 I believe that sooner rather than later, 00:00:36.03\00:00:39.83 so by definition, within your editorship, 00:00:39.87\00:00:42.47 you're going to face a major civil liberties 00:00:42.50\00:00:44.97 crisis in the United States. 00:00:45.01\00:00:47.51 Okay. 00:00:47.54\00:00:48.88 One evidence and it's coming from several angles, 00:00:48.91\00:00:51.31 but I'd like your thoughts on it. 00:00:51.35\00:00:53.25 You know, at a recent Davos meeting of all of the money 00:00:53.28\00:00:58.29 people in the world and many leaders, 00:00:58.32\00:01:01.79 they spoke 00:01:01.82\00:01:05.39 and really suggested that they're about to enter 00:01:05.43\00:01:09.26 the great reset, great financial reset 00:01:09.30\00:01:13.17 and the slogan of this is that you will own 00:01:13.20\00:01:15.97 nothing and you will be happy. 00:01:16.00\00:01:20.68 Now, I've heard that before, that's the communist slogan, 00:01:20.71\00:01:25.01 but we clearly are at the point of collapse 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.08 of the economic system that's characterized the West. 00:01:28.12\00:01:32.25 It's collapsed before 00:01:32.29\00:01:34.16 and it's destined for collapse because it's based on nothing 00:01:34.19\00:01:37.36 since Richard Nixon took us off the gold standard in '71. 00:01:37.39\00:01:42.36 It's a confidence game, 00:01:42.40\00:01:43.83 where money is made by the banks 00:01:43.87\00:01:46.53 and the governments and the whole thing 00:01:46.57\00:01:48.84 is just sort of blowing up 00:01:48.87\00:01:51.11 and inflation is one of the signs. 00:01:51.14\00:01:53.01 But with COVID giving away 5 trillion dollars 00:01:53.04\00:01:56.95 of typed in money, not real, 00:01:56.98\00:02:00.18 not connected to production or anything, 00:02:00.22\00:02:02.15 I believe they've shown their hand. 00:02:02.18\00:02:04.29 This is the end game, 00:02:04.32\00:02:05.65 they're really actually speeding it along now. 00:02:05.69\00:02:08.76 It will not be the same 00:02:08.79\00:02:10.63 when there are masses of people, 00:02:10.66\00:02:12.53 basically wards of the state, 00:02:12.56\00:02:16.50 little bit like in the Great Depression, 00:02:16.53\00:02:19.67 when people were in WPA camps. 00:02:19.70\00:02:22.77 I'm sure you know many Seventh-day Adventists 00:02:22.80\00:02:24.97 were harassed and even a few of them given 00:02:25.01\00:02:28.18 fake executions for not working 00:02:28.21\00:02:30.51 on Sabbath in a work camp that was very 00:02:30.55\00:02:32.95 akin to a detention camp. 00:02:32.98\00:02:34.98 We will have the same sort of thing, 00:02:35.02\00:02:36.79 where property is taken away or maybe fritted away 00:02:36.82\00:02:40.42 with economic collapse 00:02:40.46\00:02:41.79 and then people are told by the government 00:02:41.82\00:02:44.56 what to do, given a regular salary, 00:02:44.59\00:02:47.43 but work and controlled 00:02:47.46\00:02:49.43 and basically they're vassals of the state. 00:02:49.46\00:02:51.67 That's clearly what they're planning. 00:02:51.70\00:02:54.10 Well, you know, Lincoln, I'm not an economist, 00:02:54.14\00:02:56.24 but if what you say comes to pass, 00:02:56.27\00:03:00.01 I think the key idea is that in times of fear 00:03:00.04\00:03:03.71 and turmoil, 00:03:03.75\00:03:05.08 people are more prepared to give up their rights. 00:03:05.11\00:03:08.72 I mean, you see in the aftermath of 9/11. 00:03:08.75\00:03:12.62 Of course. 00:03:12.65\00:03:14.32 I mean, we recently 00:03:14.36\00:03:15.96 commemorated an anniversary of that. 00:03:15.99\00:03:18.86 The passage of the Patriot Act, 00:03:18.89\00:03:21.03 you know, an act that massively increased 00:03:21.06\00:03:24.53 government reach and surveillance powers, 00:03:24.57\00:03:28.47 it sailed through congress 00:03:28.50\00:03:30.31 in less than seven weeks after 9/11, 00:03:30.34\00:03:33.84 all in the name of preventing terrorism. 00:03:33.88\00:03:38.21 You know, we saw it at the beginning of COVID, 00:03:38.25\00:03:40.18 now, you know, clearly public health measures 00:03:40.22\00:03:42.58 were needed and necessary and they are necessary. 00:03:42.62\00:03:47.26 But it was intriguing to see how people 00:03:47.29\00:03:50.43 were prepared to give up rights, 00:03:50.46\00:03:53.09 you know, rights of association, 00:03:53.13\00:03:56.77 you know, right to live their lives 00:03:56.80\00:03:59.00 as they've always lived them because of a culture 00:03:59.03\00:04:02.40 or an environment of fear. 00:04:02.44\00:04:04.24 And so, you know, what I have learned from you, Lincoln, 00:04:04.27\00:04:08.54 is that one of the roles of Liberty Magazine 00:04:08.58\00:04:12.05 is to help people remain vigilant. 00:04:12.08\00:04:15.12 Right. 00:04:15.15\00:04:16.48 And to, I believe as Jesus told the Pharisees, 00:04:16.52\00:04:20.66 we should to some degree study the seasons. 00:04:20.69\00:04:23.83 Now, it's watching global warming disrupt the seasons. 00:04:23.86\00:04:27.66 But, you know, we're used to analyzing some things, 00:04:27.70\00:04:30.07 freedom should be the same. 00:04:30.10\00:04:31.47 We should be aware of these giant shifts in public 00:04:31.50\00:04:34.94 attitude toward something as important 00:04:34.97\00:04:37.37 as religious freedom or civil liberties generally. 00:04:37.41\00:04:40.18 But, of course, it's the first freedom, religious liberty. 00:04:40.21\00:04:43.68 Yeah. 00:04:43.71\00:04:45.05 There's a sociologist, but I believe 00:04:45.08\00:04:47.25 his name's Jared Davis, 00:04:47.28\00:04:48.62 who writes about this concept called Creeping Normalism. 00:04:48.65\00:04:52.02 And it's this idea that incrementally, 00:04:52.05\00:04:54.92 things can change for the worst in society, 00:04:54.96\00:04:57.59 you know, whether it's roads, 00:04:57.63\00:04:58.96 whether it's infrastructure of other kinds, 00:04:58.99\00:05:01.56 whether it's the economy. 00:05:01.60\00:05:02.96 And then people accept a new baseline 00:05:03.00\00:05:06.17 of normality over time, until one day, 00:05:06.20\00:05:09.94 you know, after the passage of a significant period, 00:05:09.97\00:05:13.17 they wake up and realize that normal 00:05:13.21\00:05:15.31 is no longer what is used to be. 00:05:15.34\00:05:16.98 Well, that's the old story, I've told it many times of, 00:05:17.01\00:05:19.95 you know, the frog and the very slowly warming water. 00:05:19.98\00:05:23.32 You adapt to anything. 00:05:23.35\00:05:25.35 Which, of course, 00:05:25.39\00:05:26.72 the scientific principle has been debunked 00:05:26.76\00:05:28.62 because if a frog is left in water that is warming, 00:05:28.66\00:05:31.63 it will to try to escape. 00:05:31.66\00:05:33.13 Well, maybe. 00:05:33.16\00:05:36.10 Frog remains. 00:05:36.13\00:05:37.60 But, talk about warming water 00:05:37.63\00:05:39.37 and I didn't plan on mentioning this and so you're the vehicle 00:05:39.40\00:05:43.47 to enable my comment. 00:05:43.51\00:05:46.07 Only a few days ago 00:05:46.11\00:05:47.64 I spoke at a little camp meeting in Washington State, 00:05:47.68\00:05:52.61 but I flew into Portland, Oregon. 00:05:52.65\00:05:54.82 And have you started traveling yet since the... 00:05:54.85\00:05:58.95 No. No, I haven't. 00:05:58.99\00:06:00.32 It's an adventure and amongst other things, 00:06:00.36\00:06:02.56 rental cars are fantastically expensive. 00:06:02.59\00:06:05.83 I've been quoted $1000 plus for three or four days. 00:06:05.86\00:06:10.33 Very hard to get a car less than $100. 00:06:10.37\00:06:14.44 But anyhow, I rented a car there and I did get 00:06:14.47\00:06:16.81 a relatively reasonable price. 00:06:16.84\00:06:19.81 And not like the old days 00:06:19.84\00:06:22.64 where you lined up at a counter, 00:06:22.68\00:06:24.01 now, it's sort of like an Apple Store, where you line up near 00:06:24.05\00:06:27.22 the cars and then different agents with the pad come. 00:06:27.25\00:06:31.22 And this African, he appeared an African fellow came 00:06:31.25\00:06:35.56 and helped me, really was very pleasant. 00:06:35.59\00:06:37.53 And I joked with him, I said, "I'm not sure 00:06:37.56\00:06:39.36 if I'm going to order an iPad 00:06:39.39\00:06:41.70 or a chicken sandwich here." 00:06:41.73\00:06:45.33 Two companies that are doing it that way. 00:06:45.37\00:06:49.97 So we were talking freely, then I asked him 00:06:50.01\00:06:53.04 when we got to the car where he is from. 00:06:53.07\00:06:54.88 He said he's from Rwanda. 00:06:54.91\00:06:57.58 And with very little prompting from me beyond just asking 00:06:57.61\00:07:01.52 where he is from, he told me that he's been telling 00:07:01.55\00:07:06.12 his fellow workers that he's getting 00:07:06.15\00:07:08.72 a bad feeling because he says 00:07:08.76\00:07:10.69 what's happening in the US reminds him 00:07:10.73\00:07:12.89 of what happened in Rwanda before the genocide. 00:07:12.93\00:07:17.27 In terms of the polarization of attitude, 00:07:17.30\00:07:19.93 is that what he meant? 00:07:19.97\00:07:21.30 Yes. 00:07:21.34\00:07:22.67 Well, not just polarization, 00:07:22.70\00:07:24.04 the murderous type anger. 00:07:24.07\00:07:28.11 You can go on many, usually right wing, 00:07:28.14\00:07:32.15 well, in this case it had to be right wing websites 00:07:32.18\00:07:34.52 and I hear it over and over again, 00:07:34.55\00:07:36.62 "The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat." 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.85 That is just not civil language. 00:07:38.89\00:07:42.02 Right. 00:07:42.06\00:07:43.39 And years ago in an editorial I wrote that the difference 00:07:43.43\00:07:47.76 between the right wing hate radio or the hate radio rather 00:07:47.80\00:07:52.03 that preceded the genocide in Rwanda 00:07:52.07\00:07:54.37 and right wing hate radio is one of green, not of kind. 00:07:54.40\00:07:59.57 Well, and I think this is one of the important tasks 00:07:59.61\00:08:02.44 of Liberty Magazine. 00:08:02.48\00:08:03.81 And that is to, you know, restraint the rhetoric, 00:08:03.85\00:08:07.42 to help people know how to engage in civil, 00:08:07.45\00:08:12.22 courteous dialogue about different issues. 00:08:12.25\00:08:15.26 Yeah. 00:08:15.29\00:08:16.62 And that is I think, one of the more challenging tasks 00:08:16.66\00:08:21.60 ahead of Liberty Magazine going forward. 00:08:21.63\00:08:24.13 And you're watching the time like I am. 00:08:24.17\00:08:26.74 It's drifting away quickly for this program 00:08:26.77\00:08:29.00 and you've almost given your charter there. 00:08:29.04\00:08:32.21 But what do you see the biggest challenge that's ahead of you, 00:08:32.24\00:08:36.98 apart from assembling the first few issues? 00:08:37.01\00:08:39.95 And I feel for you because I went through it too. 00:08:39.98\00:08:43.62 You sit at a desk and, you know, where do you start? 00:08:43.65\00:08:46.99 Yes. 00:08:47.02\00:08:48.36 No, but I think it is as we've been talking about it. 00:08:48.39\00:08:50.36 It's learning how to thread the needle, 00:08:50.39\00:08:53.29 learning how to approach inherently contentious issues, 00:08:53.33\00:08:57.30 things that people feel deeply and emotionally about, 00:08:57.33\00:09:00.34 without appearing to be putting 00:09:00.37\00:09:03.84 your thumbs on the political scale. 00:09:03.87\00:09:06.64 To be able to discuss things in a way that doesn't trigger 00:09:06.68\00:09:11.25 these destructive emotions. 00:09:11.28\00:09:13.82 Very well put, and I tried that for a long time. 00:09:13.85\00:09:17.19 On this program it can be a little bit more provocative. 00:09:17.22\00:09:20.26 But yes, Liberty should not be in the business 00:09:20.29\00:09:22.79 of offending people unless the truth itself offends them. 00:09:22.82\00:09:27.40 But you're promoting an egalitarian view 00:09:27.43\00:09:30.47 of religious liberty, that in some ways is even 00:09:30.50\00:09:34.37 different than our profession as Seventh-day Adventist. 00:09:34.40\00:09:38.51 That's got its own emphasis, but we are in the broad scope 00:09:38.54\00:09:42.74 encouraging people to see this as a God given 00:09:42.78\00:09:45.45 right that they should exercise 00:09:45.48\00:09:47.92 and we're all the way with them on that, right? 00:09:47.95\00:09:50.99 Thanks very much, Bettina, we'll talk again. 00:09:51.02\00:09:53.96 God bless. 00:09:53.99\00:09:55.32 There are many difficult things that each 00:09:59.49\00:10:01.73 of us will see in our lifetime. 00:10:01.76\00:10:03.57 One of the most difficult for me, 00:10:03.60\00:10:05.57 just a few days ago in my home town of Hagerstown, 00:10:05.60\00:10:08.44 Maryland, I drove past the Review 00:10:08.47\00:10:11.11 and Herald Publishing House where I first began working 00:10:11.14\00:10:14.14 and saw the bulldozers destroying it. 00:10:14.18\00:10:16.64 Hard to take. 00:10:16.68\00:10:18.48 Only a few months ago now, 00:10:18.51\00:10:20.45 I attended my retirement resignation 00:10:20.48\00:10:23.52 and then a new editor of Liberty Magazine was chosen. 00:10:23.55\00:10:27.56 Not hard, particularly seeing a competent editor picking up 00:10:27.59\00:10:33.29 where I left off 00:10:33.33\00:10:34.66 and I know Bettina Crouse will do very well, 00:10:34.70\00:10:37.47 very well indeed. 00:10:37.50\00:10:40.07 Charlton Heston was famously quoted as saying, 00:10:40.10\00:10:43.00 "Only out of my cold dead fingers." 00:10:43.04\00:10:45.27 I'm not dead and hopefully not cold. 00:10:45.31\00:10:47.81 And in fact my heart is warmed to know that what AT Jones 00:10:47.84\00:10:51.65 and other pioneers started and established 00:10:51.68\00:10:54.28 is being carried on powerfully for religious liberty. 00:10:54.32\00:10:58.15 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:10:58.19\00:11:01.02
