Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.97\00:00:08.80 Before the break, I was sharing 00:00:08.84\00:00:11.67 an editorial from 2013 00:00:11.71\00:00:15.01 that was taking a little longer than I thought to read. 00:00:15.04\00:00:18.35 Although none of them are long, they're only 1200 words 00:00:18.38\00:00:21.05 which words come and go pretty quick for most of us, 00:00:21.08\00:00:24.42 but it was inspired by the Second Coming, 00:00:24.45\00:00:28.16 which we had a picture on the cover, 00:00:28.19\00:00:30.23 those of you that missed it, 00:00:30.26\00:00:32.33 trying to signal at the time of disappointed 00:00:32.36\00:00:37.77 apocalyptic predictions and apocalyptic like 00:00:37.80\00:00:41.44 storm on the east coast of the US. 00:00:41.47\00:00:43.30 People were thinking about, what's going on? 00:00:43.34\00:00:45.61 So I'll pick it up at the beginning 00:00:45.64\00:00:47.28 of the paragraph that I was last reading. 00:00:47.31\00:00:52.88 An author that everyone knows, Lewis Carroll, 00:00:52.91\00:00:55.38 Alice in Wonderland, not everyone's read it, 00:00:55.42\00:00:58.02 but we know of that. 00:00:58.05\00:00:59.39 It's a good kid story, 00:00:59.42\00:01:00.76 but a little bit more than that. 00:01:00.79\00:01:02.12 He was deeply symbolic because he was a mathematician. 00:01:02.16\00:01:05.99 And I wrote here that Lewis Carroll 00:01:06.03\00:01:10.07 of the Alice in Wonderland fantasy, 00:01:10.10\00:01:12.97 but actually an accomplished mathematician, 00:01:13.00\00:01:16.07 wrote that, "If you don't know where you're going, 00:01:16.10\00:01:20.38 any road will take you there. 00:01:20.41\00:01:23.65 Too many of the roads up ahead signal trouble for us. 00:01:23.68\00:01:27.32 We need to know where we are going, 00:01:27.35\00:01:30.02 not necessarily whether the world will end one day. 00:01:30.05\00:01:34.39 I often tell seminar attendees that I can my, 00:01:34.42\00:01:37.86 stake my life on one prediction. 00:01:37.89\00:01:41.56 The world as we know it is about to pass away. 00:01:41.60\00:01:46.77 That I'm setting off, 00:01:46.80\00:01:48.17 whether it's the end of the world 00:01:48.20\00:01:49.97 or the beginning of Christ's eternal kingdom 00:01:50.01\00:01:51.91 that's not given to us to know. 00:01:51.94\00:01:54.44 Beyond this present world construct is likely 00:01:54.48\00:01:57.88 a time of runaway technological control 00:01:57.91\00:02:01.38 and dislocation. 00:02:01.42\00:02:03.28 Beyond is shore to be a time of declining resources 00:02:03.32\00:02:06.49 and more wars for access. 00:02:06.52\00:02:09.09 It will be a time of more natural disasters 00:02:09.12\00:02:12.36 caused by such things as unnatural global warming. 00:02:12.39\00:02:17.40 And I can already sense 00:02:17.43\00:02:19.53 a paradoxical swing towards 00:02:19.57\00:02:23.17 mass faith expression, 00:02:23.20\00:02:25.67 even as many will come to regard minority faith views 00:02:25.71\00:02:30.65 as a luxury that species survival cannot afford. 00:02:30.68\00:02:36.35 More than 100 years ago 00:02:36.38\00:02:37.95 the people who eventually began to publish Liberty Magazine 00:02:37.99\00:02:41.89 got into quite a debate about 00:02:41.92\00:02:43.46 how religious liberty should be projected 00:02:43.49\00:02:46.46 to the nation's thought leaders. 00:02:46.49\00:02:49.26 Some wanted to keep the argument 00:02:49.30\00:02:50.97 to historical and legal points. 00:02:51.00\00:02:53.94 Another group insisted on the necessity 00:02:53.97\00:02:56.67 of giving these arguments together 00:02:56.71\00:02:59.74 with a biblical framework. 00:02:59.77\00:03:02.21 They insisted that religious freedom 00:03:02.24\00:03:04.25 in the United States must be linked 00:03:04.28\00:03:07.22 to biblical faith and eschatology. 00:03:07.25\00:03:10.59 And in particular 00:03:10.62\00:03:12.25 they mentioned the Bible Sabbath, 00:03:12.29\00:03:14.06 a matter of much debate within Christendom, even today, 00:03:14.09\00:03:18.06 and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, 00:03:18.09\00:03:20.53 a central teaching of Jesus, 00:03:20.56\00:03:21.90 without which one would have little more 00:03:21.93\00:03:24.43 than the wise sayings 00:03:24.47\00:03:25.93 that Jefferson redacted from the Gospels. 00:03:25.97\00:03:29.67 This magazine that I edited, Liberty Magazine, 00:03:29.70\00:03:32.91 continued that second approach. 00:03:32.94\00:03:35.61 We know that the Second Coming of Jesus Christ 00:03:35.64\00:03:38.58 is the only perfect solution to all that ails the world 00:03:38.61\00:03:43.89 and nation of the United States. 00:03:43.92\00:03:47.46 And we sense that it may be soon. 00:03:47.49\00:03:52.09 But as the Apostle Paul wrote, "That day will not come, 00:03:52.13\00:03:57.27 unless the rebellion comes first, 00:03:57.30\00:04:00.74 and the man of lawlessness is revealed." 00:04:00.77\00:04:03.37 That's from 2 Thessalonians 2:3. 00:04:03.41\00:04:07.61 There might come a day, I write, 00:04:07.64\00:04:10.88 when the basic tenets of the Constitution 00:04:10.91\00:04:14.12 are practically put aside: 00:04:14.15\00:04:16.45 that certainly will be a time of crisis 00:04:16.48\00:04:19.59 for religious freedom, 00:04:19.62\00:04:21.09 but we defend the Constitution 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.76 because that day can be pushed back. 00:04:23.79\00:04:27.50 There may be uncertain times ahead 00:04:27.53\00:04:30.17 for social cohesion. 00:04:30.20\00:04:32.00 There may be stormy days more blustery 00:04:32.03\00:04:35.97 than any mega-storm yet seen on the East Coast. 00:04:36.00\00:04:40.21 But keep an eye on the horizon. 00:04:40.24\00:04:42.01 Poet Gerald Manley Hopkins 00:04:46.51\00:04:49.62 wrote how at such a time 00:04:49.65\00:04:52.69 "Morning, at the brown brink eastwards, springs." 00:04:52.72\00:04:58.16 We must be watchers for that event. 00:04:58.19\00:05:02.30 We must not be easily daunted 00:05:02.33\00:05:05.83 by ill-informed end of the world prognosticators 00:05:05.87\00:05:09.60 and, worse, their solutions. 00:05:09.64\00:05:12.81 Keep freedom alive in your hearts 00:05:12.84\00:05:15.01 and in your actions, 00:05:15.04\00:05:16.95 and the break in the clouds will come. 00:05:16.98\00:05:21.62 Was exciting stuff living through those days 00:05:21.65\00:05:24.29 and privilege for me to be able to write to it. 00:05:24.32\00:05:27.49 But you know, seven years, eight years down from that, 00:05:27.52\00:05:31.09 I can say it with a vengeance. 00:05:31.13\00:05:33.09 All of the signs of social, economic, financial, 00:05:33.13\00:05:37.97 and military storms are with us. 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.77 In fact, as I study history, in the long haul, 00:05:40.80\00:05:44.74 you can say the same thing. 00:05:44.77\00:05:46.11 But in the short haul, 00:05:46.14\00:05:47.48 we're only here by the mercy of God. 00:05:47.51\00:05:49.31 There is no logic that in the nuclear age, 00:05:49.34\00:05:55.15 with thousands of nuclear bombs stored up 00:05:55.18\00:05:59.02 by several major powers 00:05:59.05\00:06:01.06 and no end of aggravations between them. 00:06:01.09\00:06:04.63 There's no logic that we have lived this long. 00:06:04.66\00:06:08.06 Man is self-destructive, self-willed, 00:06:08.10\00:06:10.97 short imagined in all of his plans, 00:06:11.00\00:06:15.97 and they're going wrong at the speed of light. 00:06:16.00\00:06:19.04 But I think it's a privilege. 00:06:19.07\00:06:20.48 When we talk about religious liberty, 00:06:20.51\00:06:22.34 we're talking about a civil element, 00:06:22.38\00:06:27.52 you know, freedom of speech, freedom of thought, 00:06:27.55\00:06:29.52 these are civil rights. 00:06:29.55\00:06:31.75 But applying it to religion, 00:06:31.79\00:06:34.19 this is the most cherished aspect of our life, 00:06:34.22\00:06:37.23 the right to think beyond the storm, 00:06:37.26\00:06:39.96 beyond the troubles, beyond the immediate threat, 00:06:40.00\00:06:43.70 and to fix our gaze on a coming redemption. 00:06:43.73\00:06:47.80 You know, how could it be any better in our state? 00:06:47.84\00:06:53.04 For a year or two, sometime back, 00:06:53.07\00:06:56.68 I remember spending an inordinate amount of time 00:06:56.71\00:06:59.95 watching the debates on YouTube, 00:06:59.98\00:07:02.95 but they were given in different locations, 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.49 usually on college campuses, between Christopher Hitchens, 00:07:05.52\00:07:10.43 an avowed atheist, an enemy of all religions, 00:07:10.46\00:07:13.23 not just Christianity, and a great student of history. 00:07:13.26\00:07:15.73 I watched him 00:07:15.76\00:07:17.10 because he was a brilliant writer and historian, 00:07:17.13\00:07:19.67 and wordsmith. 00:07:19.70\00:07:21.17 And it was fascinating to watch his arguments 00:07:21.20\00:07:24.11 and to see him literally destroy many people 00:07:24.14\00:07:27.08 that thought their faith was intact. 00:07:27.11\00:07:29.34 And, you know, in the New Testament, 00:07:29.38\00:07:31.48 it tells a story 00:07:31.51\00:07:33.72 of the disciples trying to perform miracles 00:07:33.75\00:07:35.75 without the true faith in God and magician, 00:07:35.78\00:07:38.72 set the devil's upon them and says, 00:07:38.75\00:07:40.56 "You know, Paul, I know and so and so I know, 00:07:40.59\00:07:42.22 but who are you?" 00:07:42.26\00:07:43.76 You know, don't speak for God unless 00:07:43.79\00:07:45.46 you're really honestly wanting to be on God's side. 00:07:45.49\00:07:49.13 You know, just an assumed quackery religion 00:07:49.16\00:07:52.13 isn't going to cut it. 00:07:52.17\00:07:53.50 But I noticed that toward the end of his life 00:07:53.54\00:07:55.27 as Hitchens died painfully of cancer, unrepentant 00:07:55.30\00:07:59.74 of his anti-God stance. 00:07:59.77\00:08:04.51 He one occasion shortly before he died, he said, 00:08:04.55\00:08:07.98 "I've come to believe 00:08:08.02\00:08:09.55 that this world is basically a prison house 00:08:09.58\00:08:12.75 for the universe." 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.16 And how right he was, but how forgetful 00:08:14.19\00:08:18.93 or unknowing he was also, 00:08:18.96\00:08:21.30 that in this prison house, redemption is promised, 00:08:21.33\00:08:24.77 release is coming very, very shortly. 00:08:24.80\00:08:29.24 And that's the privilege in talking about 00:08:29.27\00:08:30.91 religious liberty. 00:08:30.94\00:08:32.27 It's not just a civil construct that helps people 00:08:32.31\00:08:35.34 that have this faith that's important to them, 00:08:35.38\00:08:37.65 not necessary to the whole, can carry forward. 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.08 No, it's how, as the Bible says, 00:08:40.12\00:08:43.02 this blessed hope can be protected in advance 00:08:43.05\00:08:46.89 toward that blessed eternal moment, 00:08:46.92\00:08:49.79 the moment of the ages when the skies part, 00:08:49.82\00:08:52.99 the storm fades away, 00:08:53.03\00:08:55.30 and the brilliant light of an eternal smile 00:08:55.33\00:08:58.30 from the deity is fixed on us. 00:08:58.33\00:09:01.07 That's the hope of the ages. 00:09:01.10\00:09:03.30 That's what this cover was hinting at. 00:09:03.34\00:09:06.78 The sky is not to be dark always, 00:09:06.81\00:09:09.18 it's to be bright with the glory of God. 00:09:09.21\00:09:11.15 When I was much younger and probably 00:09:15.55\00:09:17.62 more impressionable on the wrong things, 00:09:17.65\00:09:20.46 I had a dream of the Second Coming. 00:09:20.49\00:09:23.02 And my dream was incredibly mechanical. 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.36 There was a little kazoo type trumpet 00:09:26.39\00:09:29.46 that was elevated and then beeped out its message 00:09:29.50\00:09:33.34 and then I could see rollers on the side of the sky 00:09:33.37\00:09:36.57 and the sky was rolled back. 00:09:36.60\00:09:38.41 And there the heavenly group came 00:09:38.44\00:09:40.98 and they were like cardboard cutouts. 00:09:41.01\00:09:44.05 That is not how it's going to be, I'm quite sure. 00:09:44.08\00:09:47.42 CS Lewis writing on the event said it's like 00:09:47.45\00:09:50.99 a sudden end where a brick is thrown at the curtain 00:09:51.02\00:09:54.89 or the lamp and smashes it out. 00:09:54.92\00:09:57.16 It's a violent or at least a radical shifting 00:09:57.19\00:10:01.76 of the present reality. 00:10:01.80\00:10:04.67 That moment is something grand and imminent. 00:10:04.70\00:10:09.60 And I think it's a privilege for all of us 00:10:09.64\00:10:11.57 living in these declining days, 00:10:11.61\00:10:13.78 not of the Roman Empire, 00:10:13.81\00:10:15.14 not even of the American Empire, 00:10:15.18\00:10:16.98 but these declining days of the empire of man, 00:10:17.01\00:10:20.82 soon to be replaced by the eternal 00:10:20.85\00:10:23.42 empire and kingdom of God for the redeemed. 00:10:23.45\00:10:26.65 We can all be there. 00:10:26.69\00:10:28.32 We can all be expectant. 00:10:28.36\00:10:30.29 We can all know as we read God's Word 00:10:30.33\00:10:32.63 and read the seasons, 00:10:32.66\00:10:34.20 as the Pharisees will want not to do. 00:10:34.23\00:10:36.36 Christ is coming. 00:10:36.40\00:10:38.63 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:10:38.67\00:10:42.04
