Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.46\00:00:29.32 This is the program bringing you insights, 00:00:29.36\00:00:33.23 news, analysis, 00:00:33.26\00:00:35.03 and all around information on religious liberty 00:00:35.06\00:00:37.67 around the world, starting in the United States. 00:00:37.70\00:00:40.87 My name is Lincoln Steed, 00:00:40.90\00:00:42.60 I edited Liberty Magazine until recently, 00:00:42.64\00:00:45.74 for a total of 22 years, 00:00:45.77\00:00:47.58 and I've done this program for nearly as long. 00:00:47.61\00:00:51.55 There's many things that I could share with you. 00:00:51.58\00:00:53.82 But sitting here preparing for this program, 00:00:53.85\00:00:56.55 I started casting back a few years 00:00:56.58\00:00:58.35 over part of that period. 00:00:58.39\00:01:00.29 And I remember very clearly, 00:01:00.32\00:01:03.46 as 2012 came to an end, 00:01:03.49\00:01:06.66 many people in the media world and those that were watching 00:01:06.70\00:01:12.43 the times and seasons that Jesus spoke about, 00:01:12.47\00:01:14.97 not just religious people, 00:01:15.00\00:01:16.44 those that were concerned about where the world was going 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.17 were troubled because the Mayan calendar, 00:01:19.21\00:01:22.24 which a lot of non-Christians got really enamored of, 00:01:22.28\00:01:25.51 the Mayan calendar came to an end 00:01:25.55\00:01:28.02 at the end of 2012, as I remember. 00:01:28.05\00:01:31.22 Came to an end. 00:01:31.25\00:01:32.59 The Mayans never said directly 00:01:32.62\00:01:34.46 that that was the end of the world, 00:01:34.49\00:01:35.82 but it was odd for a group 00:01:35.86\00:01:38.86 that had a civilization over many thousands of years, 00:01:38.89\00:01:42.16 their calendar 00:01:42.20\00:01:43.53 and all of this permutations came to a, 00:01:43.57\00:01:45.83 just a permanent stop in that year. 00:01:45.87\00:01:49.44 And maybe I noticed the Mayan calendar more than 00:01:49.47\00:01:53.14 most would because my wife was from Guatemala. 00:01:53.17\00:01:56.44 She's not Mayan, 00:01:56.48\00:01:57.81 but that's the land of the Mayans. 00:01:57.85\00:02:00.12 And I visited there many times and been overwhelmed by the, 00:02:00.15\00:02:04.42 some of the pyramids and the structures 00:02:04.45\00:02:06.65 from that vanished civilization. 00:02:06.69\00:02:09.32 And as far as the Hispanic rule, 00:02:09.36\00:02:11.23 even of Guatemala that was the center 00:02:11.26\00:02:13.23 of the Spanish Empire of Latin America, 00:02:13.26\00:02:17.80 once upon a time, 00:02:17.83\00:02:19.17 until it moved further north into Mexico 00:02:19.20\00:02:22.54 and stole much of Guatemalan land and left, 00:02:22.57\00:02:25.67 just that little rump state left. 00:02:25.71\00:02:27.81 But the Mayan calendar, a big moment of disillusionment 00:02:27.84\00:02:32.21 for many of those ascension rock, new ages, 00:02:32.25\00:02:36.89 who thought that something fantastic 00:02:36.92\00:02:38.72 was about to happen. 00:02:38.75\00:02:40.49 Of course, nothing happened. 00:02:40.52\00:02:41.92 The Mayans didn't know any more than, 00:02:41.96\00:02:45.36 than the average person knows now 00:02:45.39\00:02:47.60 about when the world will end 00:02:47.63\00:02:48.96 and certainly far less than a Bible reading student 00:02:49.00\00:02:52.13 of prophecy would know. 00:02:52.17\00:02:54.64 You and I, if we read Revelation 00:02:54.67\00:02:57.31 must know of a certainty that the, 00:02:57.34\00:03:00.51 as Jesus said that the fields are ripe, 00:03:00.54\00:03:02.61 even unto the harvest, 00:03:02.64\00:03:04.45 and as Paul said, the earth groans together 00:03:04.48\00:03:07.42 until the day of its redemption draws nigh. 00:03:07.45\00:03:10.02 We're at the end where everything 00:03:10.05\00:03:13.46 is coming to the end of a cycle, 00:03:13.49\00:03:15.36 and the signs are thick, 00:03:15.39\00:03:17.53 mostly because of spiritual declension. 00:03:17.56\00:03:21.30 The signs are thick that Christ is about to reveal Himself. 00:03:21.33\00:03:24.70 But the day and the hour, as Jesus said, no man knoweth. 00:03:24.73\00:03:29.27 This used to trouble me a bit editing Liberty Magazine 00:03:29.30\00:03:32.54 and trying to communicate the imperative 00:03:32.57\00:03:36.51 of the soon return of Christ, 00:03:36.54\00:03:38.51 how could we signal that visually, 00:03:38.55\00:03:40.42 and then, as usual, in the editorial 00:03:40.45\00:03:42.95 and other articles explain that? 00:03:42.98\00:03:45.15 At the World Headquarters 00:03:45.19\00:03:46.65 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:03:46.69\00:03:48.26 for many years, 00:03:48.29\00:03:49.82 there's been a very well done, 00:03:49.86\00:03:54.50 but sometimes misinterpreted 00:03:54.53\00:03:58.17 combination of painting in a sort of a diorama, 00:03:58.20\00:04:02.40 and statues illustrating the end of the world, 00:04:02.44\00:04:06.44 but the beginning of the world to come 00:04:06.47\00:04:08.38 with the return of Jesus Christ. 00:04:08.41\00:04:10.28 In the foyer, they're not quite life sized statues, 00:04:10.31\00:04:15.08 which I think is the first mistake 00:04:15.12\00:04:16.82 standing in a group looking up into the sky, 00:04:16.85\00:04:19.72 which happens to be halfway up the wall of the opposite wall, 00:04:19.75\00:04:23.73 and there on that wall 00:04:23.76\00:04:25.09 is a little sort of either bas-relief 00:04:25.13\00:04:28.03 or icon, if you like, 00:04:28.06\00:04:31.77 of Jesus with some rays shining out from Him 00:04:31.80\00:04:34.07 with a few angels around and coming in heaven distant, 00:04:34.10\00:04:37.21 and here, they're all looking up to it, it's good. 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.84 I know a few people criticize that as the type of statuary 00:04:39.87\00:04:43.01 that you might find in cathedrals 00:04:43.04\00:04:46.25 and other such places. 00:04:46.28\00:04:48.18 But I thought in Liberty, what can we do? 00:04:48.22\00:04:49.95 Because to paint an idea 00:04:49.98\00:04:53.76 of Heavenly Host coming, 00:04:53.79\00:04:56.36 at worse looks sort of quaint 00:04:56.39\00:04:59.46 and at best looks sort of new agey UFOE. 00:04:59.49\00:05:04.67 And we don't want to suggest that we're imagining things 00:05:04.70\00:05:08.50 that are like the limited imaginations 00:05:08.54\00:05:10.81 of those that are into, 00:05:10.84\00:05:12.37 you know, the little gray men and the lizard people 00:05:12.41\00:05:15.78 and all that sort of fantastical stuff. 00:05:15.81\00:05:17.75 So in the end I assigned to an artist, 00:05:17.78\00:05:23.02 a large painting, was probably about five, six foot 00:05:23.05\00:05:26.86 long by four foot high of the Second Coming 00:05:26.89\00:05:30.73 as seen in the faces of those that experienced it. 00:05:30.76\00:05:33.60 And we made it a cover 00:05:33.63\00:05:34.96 and a back cover of Liberty Magazine. 00:05:35.00\00:05:37.57 And you can see if the camera, yes, it's well enough there. 00:05:37.60\00:05:43.14 See, there's a woman with her child 00:05:43.17\00:05:45.27 and the child's got that bemuse look at something 00:05:45.31\00:05:49.01 it can see up ahead in the sky. 00:05:49.04\00:05:51.38 The mother looks hopeful. 00:05:51.41\00:05:53.18 He is a widow. 00:05:53.21\00:05:55.92 Her husband obviously had been killed in the war, 00:05:55.95\00:05:58.42 and she's looking hopefully up there 00:05:58.45\00:06:00.09 and we'll meet in the clouds with her beloved one, perhaps. 00:06:00.12\00:06:04.26 He is an older person, an old man, 00:06:04.29\00:06:07.70 the end of human life anyway, 00:06:07.73\00:06:09.66 seeing a wonderful hope coming 00:06:09.70\00:06:11.77 and along married couple, a minority couple. 00:06:11.80\00:06:14.77 Again, this is a hope beyond this existence. 00:06:14.80\00:06:18.21 They're standing in the field of wheat. 00:06:18.24\00:06:20.98 Figuratively, like the fields 00:06:21.01\00:06:23.08 that Jesus said ripen to harvest. 00:06:23.11\00:06:25.55 Behind them is a dark sky. 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.25 And ahead that brightening 00:06:28.28\00:06:30.69 appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ 00:06:30.72\00:06:32.82 that's flooding their faces with light. 00:06:32.85\00:06:35.42 I thought of this a day ago, driving into the 3ABN studios 00:06:35.46\00:06:40.53 across flyover country, beautiful farmland. 00:06:40.56\00:06:46.50 My son and I driving to the studios 00:06:46.53\00:06:49.40 had gone through a long period 00:06:49.44\00:06:50.97 where there was no phone signal, 00:06:51.01\00:06:53.21 not any very obvious signs of towns or anything 00:06:53.24\00:06:56.51 other than the scattered farmhouse now and then. 00:06:56.54\00:06:58.81 And then we noticed ahead of us, 00:06:58.85\00:07:00.52 the sky was darkening and filling in 00:07:00.55\00:07:03.02 and we figured we were going to get rain 00:07:03.05\00:07:04.69 and we got it so bad that even ahead of us 00:07:04.72\00:07:07.99 sporty brand new Mustang stopped dead in his tracks, 00:07:08.02\00:07:11.03 couldn't see anything. 00:07:11.06\00:07:14.13 The sky fell around us 00:07:14.16\00:07:15.60 and then just when I thought we'd have to stop too, 00:07:15.63\00:07:19.63 I saw a little break in the cloud ahead. 00:07:19.67\00:07:22.74 That is we then moved ahead at nearly the speed limit, 00:07:22.77\00:07:25.87 which is another story, broke open, 00:07:25.91\00:07:29.18 and soon there was sunlight everywhere 00:07:29.21\00:07:31.08 and the dark clouds were far behind us. 00:07:31.11\00:07:33.15 I believe that's how Jesus return will be. 00:07:33.18\00:07:36.12 At a time of darkest night, stormiest moment, 00:07:36.15\00:07:39.65 there'll be that possibility of eternal bliss and of glory. 00:07:39.69\00:07:44.03 And that will enlarge, enlarge rapidly. 00:07:44.06\00:07:47.00 And it'll bring a glorious alternative 00:07:47.03\00:07:49.86 to what we're living through. 00:07:49.90\00:07:51.90 I wrote an editorial at that time 00:07:51.93\00:07:53.97 talking about the Mayans 00:07:54.00\00:07:55.64 and I want to share that in the time we have left. 00:07:55.67\00:07:58.64 This is what I wrote. 00:07:58.67\00:08:00.18 Remember, this is eight years ago. 00:08:00.21\00:08:03.85 And I must say it was a privilege 00:08:03.88\00:08:06.95 I felt and a good excuse 00:08:06.98\00:08:08.88 to put on the back cover a quote 00:08:08.92\00:08:12.12 from my own editorial, 00:08:12.15\00:08:13.49 not that I want to always quote myself, 00:08:13.52\00:08:14.86 but usually we have a quote from Jefferson or Adams 00:08:14.89\00:08:17.76 or some justice, Supreme Court Justice, 00:08:17.79\00:08:21.73 something to do with religious freedom, 00:08:21.76\00:08:23.97 but some court case or something, 00:08:24.00\00:08:25.87 but here I quoted from the editorial 00:08:25.90\00:08:27.70 and this is what I quoted before I even read it to you, 00:08:27.74\00:08:30.24 "Since there may be stormy days more blustery 00:08:30.27\00:08:34.74 than any mega storm yet seen." 00:08:34.78\00:08:37.35 And as I remember, the Sandy, 00:08:37.38\00:08:42.08 the big storm on the East Coast have just recently come 00:08:42.12\00:08:44.82 and its destruction was massive. 00:08:44.85\00:08:46.62 I said there may be stormy days more blustery 00:08:46.65\00:08:49.12 than any mega storm we had seen. 00:08:49.16\00:08:50.96 But we must keep our eyes on the horizon. 00:08:50.99\00:08:53.66 The Second Coming of Jesus Christ 00:08:53.70\00:08:55.83 is the only perfect solution to all that ails 00:08:55.86\00:09:00.00 the world and our nation. 00:09:00.04\00:09:02.77 And after January 6, I'm reminded 00:09:02.80\00:09:05.71 that we need to rediscover this sort of thinking. 00:09:05.74\00:09:09.31 This is what I wrote, "Another year, 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.28 but hardly business as usual, 00:09:11.31\00:09:12.78 the world ended on December 21 last year, 00:09:12.81\00:09:16.38 or so, they were telling us right up to the day, 00:09:16.42\00:09:19.19 those pesky Mayans, who knew 00:09:19.22\00:09:22.89 that they had it so wrong about the apocalypse. 00:09:22.92\00:09:26.23 Of course, a certain family radio speaker 00:09:26.26\00:09:28.90 had backdated the event to a few months earlier, 00:09:28.93\00:09:32.10 but is equally silent now about what happened 00:09:32.13\00:09:34.74 or didn't happen." 00:09:34.77\00:09:36.10 There was a full page newspaper ad proclaiming 00:09:36.14\00:09:37.97 the Second Coming of Christ on a certain day. 00:09:38.01\00:09:41.11 Someone once said that making predictions is very difficult, 00:09:41.14\00:09:44.31 especially about the future. 00:09:44.35\00:09:47.42 "We had an election at year's end," 00:09:47.45\00:09:49.48 not the one you and I most remember, 00:09:49.52\00:09:51.65 but another important one, 00:09:51.69\00:09:53.56 "and I had thought this editorial 00:09:53.59\00:09:55.32 could comment on the surge of optimism 00:09:55.36\00:09:57.33 that we'd be riding by now. 00:09:57.36\00:09:59.33 I can hardly remember as flat a reelection moment. 00:09:59.36\00:10:03.97 Certainly the reelected President 00:10:04.00\00:10:05.90 has made no overweening comments about 00:10:05.93\00:10:08.90 wanting to use political capital. 00:10:08.94\00:10:10.47 Maybe that's bad 00:10:10.51\00:10:11.84 or at least a number of web prognosticators 00:10:11.87\00:10:14.78 have characterized the strategy 00:10:14.81\00:10:17.01 as stand back and let it happen. 00:10:17.05\00:10:20.08 But is that fair? 00:10:20.12\00:10:21.45 Not even a president controls reality. 00:10:21.48\00:10:24.85 Bruce Springsteen in Tonight in Jungleland, 00:10:24.89\00:10:27.96 veers toward the Simon and Garfunkel imagery, 00:10:27.99\00:10:32.46 where they wrote, 00:10:32.49\00:10:33.83 "The words of the prophets 00:10:33.86\00:10:35.20 are written on the subway walls, 00:10:35.23\00:10:37.83 when he sings outside the streets on fire, 00:10:37.87\00:10:41.87 in a real death waltz, 00:10:41.90\00:10:44.94 between what's flesh and what's fantasy, 00:10:44.97\00:10:48.44 and the poet stand here, don't write nothing at all. 00:10:48.48\00:10:51.21 They just stand back and let it all be." 00:10:51.25\00:10:55.58 Ignoring that Beatles allusion, 00:10:55.62\00:10:57.49 I have to say the imagery is apt. 00:10:57.52\00:11:00.96 "Outside our own shaky neighborhood, 00:11:00.99\00:11:03.29 the streets of the world are increasingly 00:11:03.32\00:11:06.53 on fire, literally. 00:11:06.56\00:11:09.63 And let's not kid ourselves there is the smell of smoke, 00:11:09.66\00:11:13.74 and more than the odd crackle 00:11:13.77\00:11:16.00 on our own increasingly unquiet streets." 00:11:16.04\00:11:20.14 I recently watched a relatively even handed documentary 00:11:20.18\00:11:23.21 about the abortion woes in the United States. 00:11:23.24\00:11:25.25 It was titled, Lake of Fire. 00:11:25.28\00:11:29.15 And I wonder, 00:11:29.18\00:11:30.52 what is our culture about to be thrown into? 00:11:30.55\00:11:34.59 "So often in the past, 00:11:34.62\00:11:35.96 we have called upon the guardians 00:11:35.99\00:11:38.23 of the American experiment for their advice 00:11:38.26\00:11:41.10 on what they meant by such things as democracy, 00:11:41.13\00:11:44.53 freedom and religious liberty. 00:11:44.57\00:11:47.64 It's become de rigueur for religionists 00:11:47.67\00:11:50.71 enamored of the Christian nation model 00:11:50.74\00:11:53.24 to quote the more godly statements, 00:11:53.27\00:11:55.84 even as they ignore the contrary ones 00:11:55.88\00:11:58.98 and even worse, 00:11:59.01\00:12:00.35 things that showed deist views, Masonic confabulations, 00:12:00.38\00:12:05.02 and worse still, outright support 00:12:05.05\00:12:07.26 of the French terror. 00:12:07.29\00:12:09.66 I was impressed by a late 2012 00:12:09.69\00:12:12.86 PBS special on religious freedom 00:12:12.89\00:12:15.10 that handled all this in a way 00:12:15.13\00:12:16.63 that was uplifting and respectful 00:12:16.67\00:12:18.73 of the international wonder that these men wrought. 00:12:18.77\00:12:21.14 Yet they feared pure majoritarian democracy 00:12:21.17\00:12:24.87 and expected the people 00:12:24.91\00:12:27.21 to easily and at some point revert to the excesses 00:12:27.24\00:12:31.25 that led to the revolution in the first place. 00:12:31.28\00:12:34.48 It is amazing to read the late life correspondence 00:12:34.52\00:12:37.92 between Adams and Jefferson, 00:12:37.95\00:12:40.99 and come across Jefferson's opinion 00:12:41.02\00:12:42.89 that Christianity would not survive 00:12:42.92\00:12:44.93 in the United States. 00:12:44.96\00:12:46.49 Obviously, he was wrong on that count. 00:12:46.53\00:12:50.13 But how is a mere mortal to know? 00:12:50.17\00:12:52.23 Unless one is reading the Bible and its prophecies, of course. 00:12:52.27\00:12:57.11 Could these men have seen us 00:12:57.14\00:12:59.07 hitting so deliberately off the fiscal cliff? 00:12:59.11\00:13:03.75 Maybe Hamilton, I guess. 00:13:03.78\00:13:06.65 Could these men have seen economic crash 00:13:06.68\00:13:09.18 and meltdown in our future? 00:13:09.22\00:13:11.39 Well, they had seen 00:13:11.42\00:13:12.75 the South Seas Bubble burst in Europe. 00:13:12.79\00:13:15.92 But I doubt they ever had intimations of a debt 00:13:15.96\00:13:19.26 that is expressed in trillions 00:13:19.29\00:13:21.43 or multiples of the gross national product. 00:13:21.46\00:13:25.60 You've got to go to Revelation to pick up on a global scenario 00:13:25.63\00:13:29.40 in which all the merchants lament 00:13:29.44\00:13:32.41 because, "In a single hour, 00:13:32.44\00:13:35.08 all this wealth has been laid waste." 00:13:35.11\00:13:37.78 That's from 18:17. 00:13:37.81\00:13:40.08 Sometime up ahead that will happen, 00:13:40.12\00:13:44.89 though, even though 2008 gave us a little taste 00:13:44.92\00:13:48.36 of how it happens. 00:13:48.39\00:13:50.46 After the crash of 2008, 00:13:50.49\00:13:52.53 we wait to see what will happen next time. 00:13:52.56\00:13:55.33 After the Arab Spring, we wait to see 00:13:55.36\00:13:57.57 what a seemingly unstoppable cycle of revolution 00:13:57.60\00:14:02.44 will bring to the Middle East and Middle Earth. 00:14:02.47\00:14:05.61 And the bright star over the Sea of Japan 00:14:05.64\00:14:08.58 this near Christmas brought little hope for that region. 00:14:08.61\00:14:13.72 Help, what next? 00:14:13.75\00:14:16.42 Lewis Carroll of the Alice in Wonderland fantasy, 00:14:16.45\00:14:19.89 but actually an accomplished mathematician, 00:14:19.92\00:14:23.19 wrote that, "If you don't know where you are going, 00:14:23.22\00:14:26.26 any road will take you there." 00:14:26.29\00:14:29.70 Too many of the roads up ahead signal trouble. 00:14:29.73\00:14:33.47 We need to know where we're going. 00:14:33.50\00:14:37.11 We need to know where we're going, 00:14:37.14\00:14:38.77 not necessarily 00:14:38.81\00:14:40.34 whether the world will end one day. 00:14:40.38\00:14:44.95 I often tell seminar attendees 00:14:44.98\00:14:47.05 that I can stake my life on one prediction, 00:14:47.08\00:14:49.88 the world as we know it is about to pass away. 00:14:49.92\00:14:55.02 Let's take a break there and we'll be back 00:14:55.06\00:14:56.69 after a break to continue. 00:14:56.73\00:14:58.29
