Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.09\00:00:28.66 This is a program that I've been working 00:00:28.69\00:00:31.26 on for nearly 20 years 00:00:31.29\00:00:34.30 in association with Liberty magazine 00:00:34.33\00:00:36.26 of which I edited for 22 years. 00:00:36.30\00:00:40.37 It's a program designed to bring you 00:00:40.40\00:00:42.70 up-to-date information and insights 00:00:42.74\00:00:44.67 on religious liberty in the US and around the world. 00:00:44.71\00:00:48.04 My name is Lincoln Steed. 00:00:48.08\00:00:49.58 And as I said, I have been editor of Liberty magazine 00:00:49.61\00:00:52.91 for 22 years. 00:00:52.95\00:00:54.35 Moving on from that, 00:00:54.38\00:00:55.72 but not moving on from sharing religious liberty 00:00:55.75\00:00:58.05 on this program. 00:00:58.09\00:01:00.36 As part of the association ,with 3ABN over the years 00:01:00.39\00:01:03.79 I was privileged on two occasions 00:01:03.83\00:01:06.43 to go to Israel as part of the Holy Land tour 00:01:06.46\00:01:11.53 that I think is still regularly sponsored by 3ABN, 00:01:11.57\00:01:15.47 certainly many Christian groups, 00:01:15.50\00:01:17.77 many Seventh-day Adventist groups 00:01:17.81\00:01:19.51 organize these tours, and many people are helped. 00:01:19.54\00:01:23.28 When you get to, 00:01:23.31\00:01:25.51 to Israel, in Jerusalem, it's very overwhelming. 00:01:25.55\00:01:29.65 And you find that there's sort of the, 00:01:29.68\00:01:31.89 the Holy Land sickness that comes over many people. 00:01:31.92\00:01:36.42 For some people, it's so overwhelming, 00:01:36.46\00:01:39.09 they almost take leave of their critical senses, 00:01:39.13\00:01:43.43 and you have to sort of keep grounded. 00:01:43.47\00:01:46.33 And to me, it was not very hard, 00:01:46.37\00:01:48.40 because I know history. 00:01:48.44\00:01:50.51 And I know that most of what you see there 00:01:50.54\00:01:53.34 doesn't date back quite to the period of the gospel, 00:01:53.38\00:01:58.21 certainly not too far earlier periods. 00:01:58.25\00:02:02.95 The so-called Tomb of David is a rumor at best. 00:02:02.98\00:02:08.16 And the Church of the Nativity, 00:02:08.19\00:02:11.16 something designated by the Crusaders, 00:02:11.19\00:02:14.33 many, many hundreds of years ago. 00:02:14.36\00:02:16.67 But still you are in the context, 00:02:16.70\00:02:19.13 you are in the environment of where all of those events, 00:02:19.17\00:02:24.31 particularly in the New Testament 00:02:24.34\00:02:26.14 took place. 00:02:26.17\00:02:27.51 And it's easy to empathize. 00:02:27.54\00:02:30.15 I remember, on a Friday evening, 00:02:30.18\00:02:32.85 on the second visit, 00:02:32.88\00:02:35.42 we were near the western called Wailing Wall, 00:02:35.45\00:02:39.25 the foundations 00:02:39.29\00:02:42.66 that are leftover of the old temple, 00:02:42.69\00:02:45.76 and to see the celebration, 00:02:45.79\00:02:47.86 the exaltation of any number of Jewish believers 00:02:47.90\00:02:51.93 as the sun dipped, and the Sabbath was brought in 00:02:51.97\00:02:54.90 and the shofar blew and young people 00:02:54.94\00:02:59.01 from the religious schools came surging out almost dancing 00:02:59.04\00:03:03.24 and joyous and happy. 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.28 You know, that's hard not to get caught up in it. 00:03:05.31\00:03:07.82 I was happy enough to have my son 00:03:07.85\00:03:09.85 fairly recently do two recordings with me 00:03:09.88\00:03:12.15 on this program, and it reminded me of him 00:03:12.19\00:03:15.72 there with us on that same tour. 00:03:15.76\00:03:17.96 And I can remember him linking arms 00:03:17.99\00:03:20.40 with the young Israeli citizens 00:03:20.43\00:03:23.43 as they happily celebrated the seventh day Sabbath. 00:03:23.47\00:03:26.43 And I thought, what a wonderful moment 00:03:26.47\00:03:28.90 when he can grasp that enthusiasm, 00:03:28.94\00:03:33.31 spiritual enthusiasm 00:03:33.34\00:03:35.14 that's so linked with that environment. 00:03:35.18\00:03:37.98 But I want to talk for the rest of this program 00:03:38.01\00:03:40.98 on something that took place on that same spot 00:03:41.02\00:03:45.42 in very different circumstances. 00:03:45.45\00:03:47.96 It's an incident that's inspired me periodically 00:03:47.99\00:03:52.79 as I've preached sermons on religious liberty 00:03:52.83\00:03:54.80 for over two decades, editing Liberty magazine. 00:03:54.83\00:03:59.93 And it relates to those who followed Jesus. 00:03:59.97\00:04:05.51 We don't know in total 00:04:05.54\00:04:06.88 how many men and women follow Jesus, 00:04:06.91\00:04:10.88 we do know that He had more followers 00:04:10.91\00:04:13.62 than just the 12, the inner circle. 00:04:13.65\00:04:17.22 There were at least 70 others 00:04:17.25\00:04:18.65 that He sent out in His lifetime. 00:04:18.69\00:04:20.92 We do know that there were many women 00:04:20.96\00:04:23.26 that cared for Jesus and His wandering band. 00:04:23.29\00:04:28.26 Herod's, the wife of Herod's steward 00:04:28.30\00:04:31.37 is named as one of the women that brought 00:04:31.40\00:04:34.57 food and sustenance and support to the, 00:04:34.60\00:04:37.31 to the wandering group as Jesus said, 00:04:37.34\00:04:39.31 "The Son of Man has, like, 00:04:39.34\00:04:40.81 you know, even the foxes have holes 00:04:40.84\00:04:43.14 to lay their heads or holes to hide in, 00:04:43.18\00:04:45.28 Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." 00:04:45.31\00:04:47.65 So they were itinerant, 00:04:47.68\00:04:49.72 religious teacher and pupils. 00:04:49.75\00:04:54.72 For most of people's figuring, 00:04:54.76\00:04:56.12 but a lot of what went on revolved around 00:04:56.16\00:04:59.13 coming to Jerusalem and in the temple precincts. 00:04:59.16\00:05:02.76 And when I think about Jesus, 00:05:02.80\00:05:05.63 dealing with those men in the inner circle, 00:05:05.67\00:05:08.87 particularly the 12, 00:05:08.90\00:05:10.67 it strikes me over and over again 00:05:10.71\00:05:13.27 and has ever since as a young teenager, 00:05:13.31\00:05:15.98 I tried to nut through how am I going to serve the Lord, 00:05:16.01\00:05:19.81 it strikes me how, like me and you knew they were. 00:05:19.85\00:05:25.12 They were not so different, not so different. 00:05:25.15\00:05:28.59 And individually, 00:05:28.62\00:05:30.39 they might have had things different from me. 00:05:30.43\00:05:31.99 But together, they exemplified all of the fallibilities 00:05:32.03\00:05:35.93 and the weaknesses, and the daily human reminders 00:05:35.96\00:05:39.33 that each of us labor under. 00:05:39.37\00:05:43.71 Peter, of course, the Roman Catholic Church 00:05:43.74\00:05:45.61 make much of Peter, 00:05:45.64\00:05:47.48 not based on anything much more than what you see in Jerusalem, 00:05:47.51\00:05:51.45 where there's these different places 00:05:51.48\00:05:53.05 to make pilgrimage to their arbitrary 00:05:53.08\00:05:55.55 determinations that are well meant, 00:05:55.58\00:05:58.22 but can't be proven. 00:05:58.25\00:05:59.85 And there's no biblical evidence 00:05:59.89\00:06:01.89 that Peter was anything more than 00:06:01.92\00:06:05.16 apparently one of the older the group 00:06:05.19\00:06:08.66 and one favorite of Jesus, but whether he was formally 00:06:08.70\00:06:13.07 set up as a protopope, not likely. 00:06:13.10\00:06:16.81 And it also settles on, 00:06:16.84\00:06:20.48 I think, a misapprehension of Jesus charter to him 00:06:20.51\00:06:23.85 there in his risen state. 00:06:23.88\00:06:28.82 He went backwards and forwards to Peter to get him to profess, 00:06:28.85\00:06:32.69 again, his love and dedication to the Lord, 00:06:32.72\00:06:36.62 but in a way that would undo the past 00:06:36.66\00:06:39.09 because Peter had a checkered history. 00:06:39.13\00:06:42.03 And, you know, you think about Peter something that 00:06:42.06\00:06:44.67 people don't dwell on much, two occasions, 00:06:44.70\00:06:47.97 before the denial that everyone knows about. 00:06:48.00\00:06:52.57 Peter sort of showed a rather unspiritual attitude 00:06:52.61\00:06:56.38 toward all that was going on. 00:06:56.41\00:06:57.75 On one occasion, when Jesus started to reveal 00:07:00.88\00:07:04.12 who He really was, and Peter said, 00:07:04.15\00:07:08.19 "Oh, you know, you're the Christ." 00:07:08.22\00:07:10.79 And Jesus said, "Well, this wasn't given to you.: 00:07:10.83\00:07:13.80 You know, naturally, 00:07:13.83\00:07:15.16 this was given to you spiritually, 00:07:15.20\00:07:16.53 so he commended in there. 00:07:16.56\00:07:17.97 But Peter said, close to that moment, he says, 00:07:18.00\00:07:20.50 "You know, you're not gonna die, 00:07:20.54\00:07:22.54 you know, this shouldn't happen to you, 00:07:22.57\00:07:24.94 don't think about it." 00:07:24.97\00:07:26.31 And Jesus says, "Get behind Me, Satan." 00:07:26.34\00:07:28.78 I haven't had too many ministers 00:07:31.78\00:07:33.28 or parents or teachers ever call me Satan. 00:07:33.31\00:07:37.75 Obviously, Jesus was doing it for effect. 00:07:37.79\00:07:39.65 But Peter was showing a total tone 00:07:39.69\00:07:43.29 deafness about the ministry of Christ. 00:07:43.32\00:07:46.16 Then, on another occasion, 00:07:46.19\00:07:47.53 a great occasion when Jesus was transfigured 00:07:47.56\00:07:50.73 on the mount with Elijah and Moses. 00:07:50.77\00:07:54.17 I mean, you'd think that it'd be a heavy scene. 00:07:54.20\00:07:57.37 And most people don't make much of it. 00:07:57.41\00:07:59.21 But Peter was impressed. 00:07:59.24\00:08:00.61 He says, "Let's build a little house for you here." 00:08:00.64\00:08:04.95 He didn't understand. 00:08:04.98\00:08:06.68 And then in spite of his professions of loyalty, 00:08:06.72\00:08:10.29 you know, at the Last Supper, 00:08:10.32\00:08:12.02 I never will betray you, Lord, never. 00:08:12.05\00:08:16.09 Then that before it was all over 00:08:16.12\00:08:19.23 before the cock crew in the morning. 00:08:19.26\00:08:22.16 Three times he with profanity and vehemence said, 00:08:22.20\00:08:25.43 "I never knew the man. 00:08:25.47\00:08:26.80 I never knew him." 00:08:26.84\00:08:28.40 But it wasn't just Peter. 00:08:28.44\00:08:30.54 What about James and John, 00:08:30.57\00:08:33.81 the sons of Zebedee, sons of Thunder? 00:08:33.84\00:08:36.24 Impetuous guys, like nearly everyone in their teens 00:08:36.28\00:08:39.31 or perhaps early 20s has a taste of it. 00:08:39.35\00:08:42.08 You're not seasoned by experience or spirituality, 00:08:42.12\00:08:45.82 you know, move ahead before you think it 00:08:45.85\00:08:47.76 through with the energy and the testosterone 00:08:47.79\00:08:50.43 that comes with being young and energetic. 00:08:50.46\00:08:53.03 You know, they wanted the lot. 00:08:53.06\00:08:54.46 They wanted to bring the fire down 00:08:54.50\00:08:56.03 from heaven of God on those that rejected Jesus 00:08:56.06\00:08:58.43 on one occasion, and then in an infamous moment, 00:08:58.47\00:09:01.54 and you can bet your life, 00:09:01.57\00:09:03.24 mama was speaking for the boys. 00:09:03.27\00:09:05.47 Their mother went to Jesus and said, 00:09:05.51\00:09:07.18 "You know, I have a request. 00:09:07.21\00:09:08.54 Can my two boys be at Your right either side, 00:09:08.58\00:09:11.28 your left and your right hand when you sit in Your kingdom." 00:09:11.31\00:09:15.65 And it gave Jesus the occasion to remind everyone, 00:09:15.68\00:09:19.09 you don't know what you're asking for? 00:09:19.12\00:09:21.32 That you don't know idea, 00:09:21.36\00:09:22.69 what you have no idea what's ahead for us. 00:09:22.72\00:09:25.49 And, of course, Judas, his betrayal 00:09:25.53\00:09:29.83 didn't turn out so well, 00:09:29.86\00:09:31.23 but I'm not so sure Judas was any weaker 00:09:31.27\00:09:34.07 or worse than the others. 00:09:34.10\00:09:35.74 But he failed to come back in tears to the Lord 00:09:35.77\00:09:40.48 and ask for forgiveness and try for redemption. 00:09:40.51\00:09:44.68 But one way or another, even John, 00:09:44.71\00:09:47.18 the beloved disciple fled naked into the night. 00:09:47.22\00:09:53.15 Not even ready to go back and get his clothes 00:09:53.19\00:09:56.36 when they were ripped off by the bushes, hid. 00:09:56.39\00:10:00.33 Although it appears he was at the cross there 00:10:00.36\00:10:02.53 when Jesus passed his mother over into his care. 00:10:02.56\00:10:06.03 But they were not men of inherent bravery, 00:10:06.07\00:10:09.94 intelligence, or perception. 00:10:09.97\00:10:14.91 And Jesus sure took the time with them. 00:10:14.94\00:10:17.65 It says in the New Testament 00:10:17.68\00:10:19.51 that Jesus often spoke in parables 00:10:19.55\00:10:22.28 and we all love those parables, 00:10:22.32\00:10:23.95 and I've heard many are well meaning preachers say, 00:10:23.99\00:10:26.02 you know, these parables are deep, 00:10:26.05\00:10:27.46 and they explain things clearly. 00:10:27.49\00:10:30.79 I don't think so it myself, because it does say that Jesus, 00:10:30.83\00:10:35.66 in the words of Jesus, 00:10:35.70\00:10:37.03 He spoke in parables to essentially hide 00:10:37.07\00:10:42.04 some hard things from people, 00:10:42.07\00:10:43.77 only those that thought long and hard on it 00:10:43.81\00:10:46.57 would understand what the parable stood for. 00:10:46.61\00:10:48.88 But it says to His own disciples, 00:10:48.91\00:10:51.01 to His apostles, He spoke plainly. 00:10:51.05\00:10:56.58 And even speaking plainly to them, 00:10:56.62\00:10:58.79 as He prayed His incredible long prayer 00:10:58.82\00:11:02.89 for oneness with the Father and with His followers. 00:11:02.92\00:11:06.36 They said, "What's He talking about, 00:11:06.39\00:11:07.73 going away coming at once? 00:11:07.76\00:11:09.53 What does this all mean?" 00:11:09.56\00:11:11.27 They didn't understand. 00:11:11.30\00:11:13.74 So to me, what I want to share with you 00:11:13.77\00:11:15.87 in the few minutes left of this program 00:11:15.90\00:11:18.57 has deeper meaning 00:11:18.61\00:11:19.94 when you understand the back story, 00:11:19.97\00:11:21.74 the type of men we were dealing with, 00:11:21.78\00:11:24.45 and yet changes by the type of men 00:11:24.48\00:11:27.18 that Jesus was the god man. 00:11:27.22\00:11:29.85 There's a story that's told in Acts Chapter 3, 00:11:29.88\00:11:32.89 and the verses that follow 00:11:32.92\00:11:34.26 and runs over into Acts Chapter 4, 00:11:34.29\00:11:37.53 but it takes place at that temple. 00:11:37.56\00:11:40.56 Now only a foundational remainder 00:11:40.60\00:11:43.60 with a foreign or an alien form of religion 00:11:43.63\00:11:47.84 packed on top of it. 00:11:47.87\00:11:50.67 It's sort of the festering sore religious animosity 00:11:50.71\00:11:55.14 in the Holy Land where the, 00:11:55.18\00:11:57.88 that sacred precinct for the Jews 00:11:57.91\00:12:00.78 now so laterally come back to David's city. 00:12:00.82\00:12:06.15 And they find that sitting atop is the Al-Aqsa Mosque, 00:12:06.19\00:12:10.69 erected by the conquering Muslim groups, 00:12:10.73\00:12:14.66 the Muslim, the Bedouin successors 00:12:14.70\00:12:19.37 hundreds and hundreds of years ago, 00:12:19.40\00:12:21.20 but on purpose, 00:12:21.24\00:12:22.60 and Christians have done it too. 00:12:22.64\00:12:24.31 Often when one religion and the society 00:12:24.34\00:12:27.24 and the political power that goes with it 00:12:27.28\00:12:29.18 when they deposed another, 00:12:29.21\00:12:30.78 they purposely erect their temple, 00:12:30.81\00:12:33.75 their holy place on the top of the other, 00:12:33.78\00:12:36.12 not even by accident. 00:12:36.15\00:12:37.52 The Christian missionaries in the South Pacific 00:12:37.55\00:12:39.65 nearly always built their mission compound 00:12:39.69\00:12:43.22 on top of the ancient burial grounds 00:12:43.26\00:12:45.13 in the spirit temples of the ancient gods. 00:12:45.16\00:12:48.76 It's a way to show neither that you fear them, 00:12:48.80\00:12:52.20 nor are they dominant anymore, that you have superseded them. 00:12:52.23\00:12:56.14 And, but in those precincts, 00:12:56.17\00:12:58.54 remember where Jesus fatally came in conflict 00:12:58.57\00:13:02.08 with the authorities. 00:13:02.11\00:13:04.78 It was what led to the cross. 00:13:04.81\00:13:06.95 He stayed back till His time had come. 00:13:06.98\00:13:09.98 Then at the time of the Passover, 00:13:10.02\00:13:11.95 He went down and spoke powerfully, 00:13:11.99\00:13:14.52 cleansed the temple, spoke powerfully and openly, 00:13:14.56\00:13:17.69 and there was a visitation 00:13:17.73\00:13:19.16 or manifestation of God's power. 00:13:19.19\00:13:21.16 And He says, "Now is the kingdom of this earth, 00:13:21.20\00:13:23.10 or the prince of this earth cast down." 00:13:23.13\00:13:25.80 He announced victory and upgraded everyone. 00:13:25.83\00:13:29.14 And the next night or in the night, 00:13:29.17\00:13:32.57 shortly following that He was taken 00:13:32.61\00:13:34.21 by the temple authorities condemned before Pilate, 00:13:34.24\00:13:37.88 was unwilling on the whole event, 00:13:37.91\00:13:41.02 and crucified. 00:13:41.05\00:13:43.35 And then the disciples fled. 00:13:43.39\00:13:45.45 But in Acts Chapter 3, 00:13:45.49\00:13:46.82 a story is told that inspires me powerfully. 00:13:46.86\00:13:51.96 Let's take a break and we'll pick up the story 00:13:51.99\00:13:54.20 in Acts Chapter 3. 00:13:54.23\00:13:55.56 Stay with us. 00:13:55.60\00:13:56.93
