freedom of speech 00:00:13.17\00:00:18.81 and freedom of printing and freedom of ideas. 00:00:18.85\00:00:21.95 Which I think is if anything, 00:00:21.98\00:00:23.65 the bedrock of Western democratic, 00:00:23.69\00:00:26.69 social and political life. 00:00:26.72\00:00:28.99 And this is something else 00:00:29.02\00:00:30.36 he wrote as part of that argument, 00:00:30.39\00:00:31.73 he says, "Suppose we could expel sin 00:00:31.76\00:00:35.26 by this means," in other words, censorship, 00:00:35.30\00:00:37.60 "suppose we could, 00:00:37.63\00:00:39.23 look how much we thus expel of sin, 00:00:39.27\00:00:42.30 how much we expel a virtue for the matter of them, 00:00:42.34\00:00:45.27 both is the same. 00:00:45.31\00:00:46.91 Remove that and you remove them both alike. 00:00:46.94\00:00:51.38 This justifies the high providence of God, 00:00:51.41\00:00:53.98 who, though he command us 00:00:54.02\00:00:56.35 temperance, justice, continence, 00:00:56.38\00:00:59.29 yet pours out before us, 00:00:59.32\00:01:01.52 even to a profuseness, all desirable things, 00:01:01.56\00:01:05.79 and gives us minds that can wander beyond 00:01:05.83\00:01:08.86 all limit and satiety. 00:01:08.90\00:01:12.23 Why should we then affect a rigor contrary 00:01:12.27\00:01:16.44 to the manner of God and of nature, 00:01:16.47\00:01:21.28 by abridging or scanting those means, 00:01:21.31\00:01:24.51 which books freely permitted are, 00:01:24.55\00:01:27.32 both to the trial of virtue and the exercise of truth? 00:01:27.35\00:01:31.45 To me, it's an interesting logic. 00:01:31.49\00:01:35.29 And he says this here and a couple of pages over, 00:01:35.32\00:01:38.19 he says, "Well knows he who uses to consider, 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.46 that our faith and knowledge thrives by exercise, 00:01:41.50\00:01:46.20 as well as our limbs and complexion. 00:01:46.23\00:01:49.34 Truth is compared in Scripture to a streaming fountain, 00:01:49.37\00:01:55.34 if her waters flow not in a perpetual progression, 00:01:55.38\00:01:58.25 they sicken into a muddy pool of conformity and tradition. 00:01:58.28\00:02:03.52 A fool may be a heretic in the truth, 00:02:03.55\00:02:06.09 and if he believe things only 00:02:06.12\00:02:07.69 because his pastor says so, 00:02:07.72\00:02:09.82 or the Assembly so determines, 00:02:09.86\00:02:11.76 without knowing other reason, 00:02:11.79\00:02:13.50 though his belief be true, 00:02:13.53\00:02:16.97 yet the very truth he holds becomes his heresy." 00:02:17.00\00:02:20.50 You know, this is something 00:02:20.54\00:02:21.87 that I wish my fellow Adventist understood. 00:02:21.90\00:02:24.51 We're preparing for a crisis. 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.14 We have as the New Testament says, 00:02:26.17\00:02:29.08 you know, the oracles delivered, 00:02:29.11\00:02:30.68 very oracles of God delivered to us. 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.75 But if we don't know what they mean, 00:02:32.78\00:02:34.48 we haven't tested them by experience. 00:02:34.52\00:02:37.29 You know, they might as well be pearls before swine. 00:02:37.32\00:02:42.09 And he says, "A man may be a heretic in the truth, 00:02:42.12\00:02:44.23 and if he believe things 00:02:44.26\00:02:45.59 only because his pastor says so," 00:02:45.63\00:02:47.50 repeating it, "or the Assembly so determines, 00:02:47.53\00:02:50.53 without knowing other reason, 00:02:50.57\00:02:51.93 though his belief be true, 00:02:51.97\00:02:53.30 yet the very truth he holds becomes his heresy. 00:02:53.34\00:02:57.24 There is not any burden that some would gladly post off 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.48 to another than to charge and care of their religion." 00:03:00.51\00:03:04.78 And again, this is how 00:03:04.81\00:03:07.08 it will work in a time of stress. 00:03:07.12\00:03:09.28 There is no shortage of those 00:03:09.32\00:03:12.05 who will put you on the guardrail 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.96 for practicing religion, 00:03:14.99\00:03:16.62 as they wish you to be practiced. 00:03:16.66\00:03:18.06 And very often, most times that is the wrong way to go. 00:03:18.09\00:03:22.83 He says, "There be, who knows not that... 00:03:22.86\00:03:25.40 Who knows that 00:03:25.43\00:03:26.77 there be of Protestants and professors 00:03:26.80\00:03:28.87 who live and die in as arrant an implicit faith 00:03:28.90\00:03:33.14 as any lay Papist of Loretto." 00:03:33.17\00:03:36.44 Speaking to Protestants, you know, 00:03:36.48\00:03:38.11 just because you're a Protestant 00:03:38.15\00:03:39.48 you're not saved. 00:03:39.51\00:03:40.85 You think, you know the Bible, if you don't experience it, 00:03:40.88\00:03:42.82 if you don't understand it, you're still wrong. 00:03:42.85\00:03:45.95 And then he doesn't conclude. 00:03:45.99\00:03:47.52 But I want to conclude with this little paragraph, 00:03:47.56\00:03:49.59 he says, "Where there is much desire to learn, 00:03:49.62\00:03:54.30 there of necessity will be much arguing, 00:03:54.33\00:03:59.37 much writing, many opinions, 00:03:59.40\00:04:02.70 for opinion in good men is 00:04:02.74\00:04:04.77 but knowledge in the making. 00:04:04.81\00:04:09.11 Under these fantastic terrors of sect and schism, 00:04:09.14\00:04:13.95 we wrong the earnest and zealous thirst 00:04:13.98\00:04:17.79 after knowledge and understanding 00:04:17.82\00:04:19.79 which God hath stirred up in this city." 00:04:19.82\00:04:24.99 The experiment in England ended badly, 00:04:25.03\00:04:29.83 even though I've not so much defended, 00:04:29.86\00:04:32.03 but I speak of it often 00:04:32.07\00:04:33.40 because it was a grand moment in English history. 00:04:33.44\00:04:36.04 There's no question 00:04:36.07\00:04:37.41 when the Puritans tried to purify, 00:04:37.44\00:04:40.44 not just the Church of England, but the entire state. 00:04:40.48\00:04:43.35 It failed for the reasons that he's giving there. 00:04:43.38\00:04:46.45 Oliver Cromwell, who was not as big a despot 00:04:46.48\00:04:49.32 as the mostly Catholic influenced historians nowadays, 00:04:49.35\00:04:53.49 who can't dare speak well of him. 00:04:53.52\00:04:56.52 Oliver Cromwell wasn't as bad as he appeared. 00:04:56.56\00:04:58.89 In fact, ironically, he even allowed to be 00:04:58.93\00:05:01.83 published in his lifetime during his reign, a book, 00:05:01.86\00:05:06.57 a how to book on how to assassinate him. 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.57 I can promise you such a book 00:05:09.60\00:05:11.14 would not be allowed in the United States today. 00:05:11.17\00:05:13.54 If you wrote a book 00:05:13.58\00:05:14.91 on how to assassinate a president, 00:05:14.94\00:05:16.98 you would have to be the FBI knocking at your door 00:05:17.01\00:05:19.51 and the judges gaveling you to other regions. 00:05:19.55\00:05:23.99 Oliver Cromwell allowed that, 00:05:24.02\00:05:25.35 but his regime after his death was sudden too, by an illness, 00:05:25.39\00:05:29.22 his regime collapsed totally 00:05:29.26\00:05:31.36 because he attempted 00:05:31.39\00:05:33.53 to remolarize an entire country. 00:05:33.56\00:05:36.13 He appointed major generals over military districts, 00:05:36.16\00:05:39.57 his job like the muttawa, 00:05:39.60\00:05:42.07 I think they're called, or the religious police 00:05:42.10\00:05:44.24 in Saudi Arabia are trying today. 00:05:44.27\00:05:46.74 They went around daily 00:05:46.78\00:05:48.61 watching the behavior in the godly, 00:05:48.64\00:05:51.05 the public godliness of every citizen, 00:05:51.08\00:05:53.55 things like kite flying, games, dances, 00:05:53.58\00:05:56.75 all of the frivolities of life, 00:05:56.79\00:05:59.59 which included many wrong things, 00:05:59.62\00:06:01.49 but also many harmless pursuits were forbidden. 00:06:01.52\00:06:04.76 And so the people that had enough of that 00:06:04.79\00:06:06.46 by the time Cromwell died 00:06:06.49\00:06:07.83 and they rushed to invite the king back. 00:06:07.86\00:06:10.93 John Milton understood very plainly that 00:06:10.97\00:06:15.17 you cannot be a conscience for another person. 00:06:15.20\00:06:19.34 You can, of course, point them toward the cross. 00:06:19.37\00:06:21.74 You can, of course, 00:06:21.78\00:06:23.18 explain to them in the best language 00:06:23.21\00:06:25.15 you can summon. 00:06:25.18\00:06:26.51 And the best language is your own life. 00:06:26.55\00:06:28.02 You can explain to them the things of God 00:06:28.05\00:06:30.95 and the law that it has for you 00:06:30.99\00:06:33.12 and how they may partake of that. 00:06:33.15\00:06:34.69 You know, I've decided that's the witness. 00:06:34.72\00:06:37.43 That is the definitive witness that can never be gainsaid. 00:06:37.46\00:06:42.06 If you can tell someone else the Lord Jesus changed me, 00:06:42.10\00:06:46.37 and this is what inspires me. 00:06:46.40\00:06:48.30 Other people may want that 00:06:48.34\00:06:49.67 if they see something exemplary in your life. 00:06:49.70\00:06:52.57 George Bush tried it at least got him elected. 00:06:52.61\00:06:54.68 And I can't comment further than that, 00:06:54.71\00:06:56.41 but he says, Jesus was his favorite person 00:06:56.44\00:06:59.28 because He changed my life. 00:06:59.31\00:07:01.55 I remember in a debate with Christopher Hitchens, 00:07:01.58\00:07:04.89 the great skeptic who used to shame 00:07:04.92\00:07:07.49 and embarrass most Christians, 00:07:07.52\00:07:10.39 Muslims, and others of faith who argued with him. 00:07:10.43\00:07:13.43 He couldn't answer Tony Blair and the Reverend El Sharpton 00:07:13.46\00:07:17.37 who had some weird ideas of his own, 00:07:17.40\00:07:19.50 but he couldn't answer either of those 00:07:19.53\00:07:20.87 because both of them refused to argue 00:07:20.90\00:07:22.84 I noted and said, Jesus changed my life. 00:07:22.87\00:07:26.74 This is what He did for me. 00:07:26.78\00:07:28.74 You can't change them. 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.35 And John Milton, I believe was on 00:07:30.38\00:07:33.48 to a powerful argument in favor of free speech. 00:07:33.52\00:07:36.48 Unless something is openly seditious and dangerous, 00:07:36.52\00:07:39.82 which it may well be determined that 00:07:39.85\00:07:43.76 some of the tweets and other communications 00:07:43.79\00:07:46.70 of recent months in the United States 00:07:46.73\00:07:50.03 were inspiring people to violence 00:07:50.07\00:07:51.87 and rebellion and so on. 00:07:51.90\00:07:53.23 If such that is not the sort of thing 00:07:53.27\00:07:55.87 that any law allows. 00:07:55.90\00:07:57.61 Under British, and American, and Western law, 00:07:57.64\00:08:00.54 if you incite a crowd to violence, you're responsible. 00:08:00.58\00:08:04.45 That's a well-established legal principle. 00:08:04.48\00:08:07.58 But as far as public expression, 00:08:07.62\00:08:10.92 why can we think that we could ever restrict anybody? 00:08:10.95\00:08:15.32 One of my earliest memories as a young man in Australia 00:08:15.36\00:08:18.89 was my father took me along 00:08:18.93\00:08:20.86 to Hyde Park in Sydney, Australia named after 00:08:20.90\00:08:23.33 Hyde Park in England. 00:08:23.37\00:08:24.83 And there on a weekend, 00:08:24.87\00:08:26.50 anybody could come along 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.37 and very literally they would often 00:08:28.40\00:08:29.94 have a little wooden box. 00:08:29.97\00:08:31.31 They would stand up on it and it would hold forth. 00:08:31.34\00:08:34.11 I heard communist espousing 00:08:34.14\00:08:36.24 the most virulent form of Marxism. 00:08:36.28\00:08:38.81 I heard proto gay rights types 00:08:38.85\00:08:42.98 way before it ever was well known, 00:08:43.02\00:08:45.19 arguing against patriarchy and all the rest, 00:08:45.22\00:08:48.16 interesting to hear people. 00:08:48.19\00:08:49.52 They were harmless allowed to share it in public. 00:08:49.56\00:08:53.53 And if they had any value, others could pick up on it. 00:08:53.56\00:08:58.20 Never harmed England or Australia 00:08:58.23\00:09:00.37 or other places to let people talk freely like that. 00:09:00.40\00:09:03.30 It gives someone the idea 00:09:03.34\00:09:05.07 that the world is at their fingertips, 00:09:05.11\00:09:06.88 ideas are exciting and it can lead to political 00:09:06.91\00:09:11.35 and social reform 00:09:11.38\00:09:13.48 and advancement in spectacular ways. 00:09:13.52\00:09:15.98 What we want to avoid need to avoid is the attempt 00:09:16.02\00:09:21.22 to restrict the God given right of others 00:09:21.26\00:09:24.69 to exercise their conscience 00:09:24.73\00:09:27.23 and their faculties in a way 00:09:27.26\00:09:31.23 that will lead them toward this pile of wonder 00:09:31.27\00:09:33.94 unknowingly truth. 00:09:33.97\00:09:35.30 It's worth remembering that 00:09:38.57\00:09:39.91 many people have lost their lives 00:09:39.94\00:09:43.01 for saying the wrong thing. 00:09:43.04\00:09:45.38 And in our modern era, 00:09:45.41\00:09:46.75 people have even lost their lives 00:09:46.78\00:09:48.12 for thinking the wrong thing, 00:09:48.15\00:09:50.62 and movies have been made about 00:09:50.65\00:09:52.09 such crazy phenomena as inception, 00:09:52.12\00:09:56.56 before you even do something you're convicted. 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.29 But in reality, freedom of speech 00:09:59.33\00:10:01.06 is integral to how life functions 00:10:01.10\00:10:03.40 in our world. 00:10:03.43\00:10:04.77 Freedom of speech is integral 00:10:04.80\00:10:06.60 to how we function before the Lord God Himself. 00:10:06.63\00:10:10.77 God did not force Adam and Eve to think 00:10:10.81\00:10:14.71 and to do as he wanted. 00:10:14.74\00:10:16.34 He urged them. 00:10:16.38\00:10:17.95 He educated them. 00:10:17.98\00:10:19.31 They made a wrong choice, 00:10:19.35\00:10:20.75 but we can make the right choices. 00:10:20.78\00:10:23.69 We can speak about what we know. 00:10:23.72\00:10:25.95 And for someone else to try to restrict us 00:10:25.99\00:10:28.96 is to do the devil's own work
