Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.66\00:00:29.69 This is your program, 00:00:29.72\00:00:31.06 bringing you up-to-date news, views, analysis, 00:00:31.09\00:00:34.10 and general information on religious liberty 00:00:34.13\00:00:36.97 and conscience issues around the world, 00:00:37.00\00:00:40.24 and often in the United States. 00:00:40.27\00:00:42.64 My name is Lincoln Steed. 00:00:42.67\00:00:44.97 For 22 years, I was editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:45.01\00:00:48.64 and almost as long running this program, welcome. 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.91 And my guest on the program is a repeat guest, 00:00:51.95\00:00:56.89 my son Christopher Steed. 00:00:56.92\00:00:59.12 And I'm so happy that 00:00:59.15\00:01:01.22 you could be on this program, Christopher. 00:01:01.26\00:01:04.49 You've enjoyed it before, haven't you? 00:01:04.53\00:01:05.86 It's not so shocking, right? 00:01:05.89\00:01:08.13 Not really. 00:01:08.16\00:01:10.17 And I know it's gone well, 00:01:10.20\00:01:11.53 because the very first time you were on, 00:01:11.57\00:01:14.67 I don't think you were more than 00:01:14.70\00:01:16.47 about 8-10 years old. 00:01:16.50\00:01:18.97 And you had a cameo... I was 11. 00:01:19.01\00:01:20.71 Eleven. You had a cameo walk on. 00:01:20.74\00:01:23.48 And we exchanged a few words. 00:01:23.51\00:01:25.41 And for months after that I had very nice letters, 00:01:25.45\00:01:28.68 mostly from older women. 00:01:28.72\00:01:31.75 So you appealed to the women. 00:01:31.79\00:01:33.59 And one of them said, "Oh, that dear, dear boy." 00:01:33.62\00:01:36.73 And I said, "Yes, absolutely, my dear son." 00:01:36.76\00:01:39.69 But that was many years ago. 00:01:39.73\00:01:42.20 You're out and around and grown up now. 00:01:42.23\00:01:45.00 And I value your opinion. 00:01:45.03\00:01:47.14 So I want to talk with you about... 00:01:47.17\00:01:49.44 Twelve years ago? 00:01:49.47\00:01:50.81 Yeah, I want to... 00:01:50.84\00:01:52.21 I'm 23 now, yeah, 12 years ago. 00:01:52.24\00:01:53.91 You've been on the program more recently than that, 00:01:53.94\00:01:55.81 but I want to talk with you a bit about 00:01:55.84\00:01:58.25 what you're doing lately 00:01:58.28\00:01:59.61 and get your feedback on the issues of the moment 00:01:59.65\00:02:03.89 in some ways related to COVID. 00:02:03.92\00:02:06.65 Now, I titled this program Out and Around. 00:02:06.69\00:02:09.82 Yeah. 00:02:09.86\00:02:11.19 Most of us have not been out and around 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.73 for well over a year with COVID. 00:02:13.76\00:02:16.46 You know, in the US a little bit 00:02:16.50\00:02:18.87 but in other countries very much so people 00:02:18.90\00:02:21.47 were literally locked in their homes. 00:02:21.50\00:02:23.14 Yeah. 00:02:23.17\00:02:24.74 But what does your Bible say 00:02:24.77\00:02:26.11 about Christian's responsibility 00:02:26.14\00:02:28.38 even in the difficult time? 00:02:28.41\00:02:29.74 That we got to get out there. 00:02:29.78\00:02:31.11 And I actually did get out there for nine months. 00:02:31.15\00:02:35.82 I was in a program in Pennsylvania 00:02:35.85\00:02:38.05 in the Hamburg area called Core 00:02:38.09\00:02:40.56 where I was learning how to do Bible work. 00:02:40.59\00:02:43.86 So our first part of the semester, 00:02:43.89\00:02:47.30 we had "two semesters," 00:02:47.33\00:02:49.53 the first one was learning how to go door-to-door 00:02:49.56\00:02:51.90 so we would learn how to do colporteur ministry 00:02:51.93\00:02:54.44 through asking some donations. 00:02:54.47\00:02:56.60 It's an old way of book selling door-to-door 00:02:56.64\00:02:59.31 and witnessing door-to-door. 00:02:59.34\00:03:01.34 So we had our backpacks and everything. 00:03:01.38\00:03:03.95 And we would go door-to-door, 00:03:03.98\00:03:05.31 we had to wear masks and everything. 00:03:05.35\00:03:08.25 But we were still out and about, 00:03:08.28\00:03:10.49 I mean, we were started giving Bible studies 00:03:10.52\00:03:13.96 right after Christmas break, we got back, 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.62 started giving Bible studies. 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.76 We had a few, actually people get baptized 00:03:19.79\00:03:23.47 at one of the seminary series we had, 00:03:23.50\00:03:25.93 because of those Bible studies. 00:03:25.97\00:03:28.67 Felt pretty good. Felt really good. Yeah. 00:03:28.70\00:03:30.91 Now tell me, you know, in this environment, 00:03:30.94\00:03:35.34 it even came over me 00:03:35.38\00:03:36.71 you'd start to feel suspicious of everybody 00:03:36.75\00:03:39.58 in the store or wherever you were, 00:03:39.61\00:03:41.05 you think, is that person going to give me 00:03:41.08\00:03:42.42 what's going to kill me. 00:03:42.45\00:03:43.79 And so there's a social distancing 00:03:43.82\00:03:45.99 by mandate, 00:03:46.02\00:03:47.36 but also in our own minds, 00:03:47.39\00:03:48.72 we were learning to distrust other people. 00:03:48.76\00:03:50.59 How did you find it door-to-door? 00:03:50.63\00:03:52.96 Did people welcome you, 00:03:52.99\00:03:54.33 or did you have open discussion? 00:03:54.36\00:03:56.16 At first, when people saw us at the door, 00:03:56.20\00:03:58.23 they did the one eye peeking out, "Hello." 00:03:58.27\00:04:01.80 "Hi, my name is Chris. I'm a Bible worker." 00:04:01.84\00:04:04.11 "Oh, you're a Bible worker." 00:04:04.14\00:04:05.67 The doors just opened up. 00:04:05.71\00:04:07.04 That's interesting. 00:04:07.08\00:04:08.41 So that disarmed their inhibition 00:04:08.44\00:04:10.25 and their suspicion. 00:04:10.28\00:04:11.61 Well... Sometimes. 00:04:11.65\00:04:12.98 I'd say at least 75% of the time 00:04:13.01\00:04:15.68 we had a very welcoming experience. 00:04:15.72\00:04:17.59 Other people were still a little, 00:04:17.62\00:04:19.79 "Oh, do you guys sanitize? 00:04:19.82\00:04:21.69 You guys wear your mask properly." 00:04:21.72\00:04:23.39 But I'd say 75-85% of the people 00:04:23.43\00:04:27.23 open their doors lovingly and widely, prayed. 00:04:27.26\00:04:30.10 I prayed with quite a few people. 00:04:30.13\00:04:33.03 And I'm still in contact 00:04:33.07\00:04:34.80 with one of our Bible study contacts. 00:04:34.84\00:04:38.77 And we still talk to this day about stuff that's going on 00:04:38.81\00:04:42.41 and she actually said that, 00:04:42.44\00:04:43.95 you know that you guys actually did a lot of good 00:04:43.98\00:04:46.11 in the community. 00:04:46.15\00:04:47.48 Because while we were there we weren't only like just working 00:04:47.52\00:04:50.69 at the one place where we were, 00:04:50.72\00:04:52.39 we had our own church that we went to. 00:04:52.42\00:04:54.69 So we were holding church services like 00:04:54.72\00:04:56.83 I was up front doing special music, 00:04:56.86\00:04:58.29 scripture readings, children's stories. 00:04:58.33\00:05:02.03 We held a VBS, we helped there. 00:05:02.06\00:05:06.50 Vacation Bible School for those... 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.27 Yeah, for its... 00:05:08.30\00:05:09.64 I know the acronym. 00:05:09.67\00:05:11.01 Camp meeting for little kids, pretty much. 00:05:11.04\00:05:14.91 And then we helped set up the camp meeting right before 00:05:14.94\00:05:18.41 the camp meeting started. 00:05:18.45\00:05:21.02 And then I went up to Pennsylvania 00:05:21.05\00:05:23.99 again for a summer camp... 00:05:24.02\00:05:25.52 Very good. For fun. 00:05:25.55\00:05:27.26 So, you know, the message I get out of this is at a time 00:05:27.29\00:05:30.56 of social separation and restriction, 00:05:30.59\00:05:34.30 you were part of an experience 00:05:34.33\00:05:36.13 where you saw firsthand 00:05:36.16\00:05:37.60 the people still not everybody, 00:05:37.63\00:05:39.80 but people still have spiritual needs 00:05:39.83\00:05:41.90 and were still responding. 00:05:41.94\00:05:45.17 And you alluded to the Bible text, 00:05:45.21\00:05:47.98 but as I remember the text, I don't know references, 00:05:48.01\00:05:50.65 always bad on references. 00:05:50.68\00:05:52.15 But Paul says, 00:05:52.18\00:05:53.72 "Forsake not the assembling of yourselves together." 00:05:53.75\00:05:58.45 Many people since COVID, I've spoken to, 00:05:58.49\00:06:00.76 they seem to remember that, 00:06:00.79\00:06:02.12 but they forget what comes next. 00:06:02.16\00:06:03.49 And he says next, 00:06:03.53\00:06:04.86 and the more so as you see the day approaching. 00:06:04.89\00:06:07.90 So it seems to me 00:06:07.93\00:06:10.20 the need to communicate and to meet 00:06:10.23\00:06:12.63 but not just in church, 00:06:12.67\00:06:14.24 to reach out and to talk about spiritual things 00:06:14.27\00:06:17.24 with people is more important, 00:06:17.27\00:06:20.98 as things get more dangerous. 00:06:21.01\00:06:23.11 And that's the great irony. 00:06:23.14\00:06:24.71 I mean, doesn't, isn't one of the signs from Ellen White, 00:06:24.75\00:06:27.88 where the devil will cast a great cloud 00:06:27.92\00:06:30.22 over the earth or great mist... 00:06:30.25\00:06:31.89 Of course, a deception, deception. 00:06:31.92\00:06:33.59 And that's, you're talking about Ellen White, 00:06:33.62\00:06:35.99 who was an early spiritual guide 00:06:36.02\00:06:38.43 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:06:38.46\00:06:39.83 And we believe that she was under some inspiration 00:06:39.86\00:06:42.23 when she shared things, 00:06:42.26\00:06:43.83 but actually, that's from the Bible. 00:06:43.87\00:06:45.50 It says the days are coming where there'll be a famine 00:06:45.53\00:06:48.10 of the Word of God. 00:06:48.14\00:06:50.01 And it says, a great blindness will come upon people, 00:06:50.04\00:06:53.68 a spiritual blindness. 00:06:53.71\00:06:55.38 I mean, that's pretty much exactly what's happening now. 00:06:55.41\00:06:58.08 'Cause I mean, a lot of the people I talked to, 00:06:58.11\00:07:01.35 there was a few Catholics I talked to, 00:07:01.38\00:07:03.08 there was even a... 00:07:03.12\00:07:07.89 I can't remember anything I think it's Jesuit. 00:07:07.92\00:07:10.23 It's Roman Catholic. 00:07:10.26\00:07:11.59 Roman Catholic, 00:07:11.63\00:07:12.96 but they were part of the Roman Catholic hierarchy. 00:07:12.99\00:07:14.73 And they said, their churches are closed, 00:07:14.76\00:07:16.33 their cathedrals are closed, like they won't meet. 00:07:16.36\00:07:19.23 Yeah. 00:07:19.27\00:07:20.60 Well, you know, I have strong opinions. 00:07:20.64\00:07:22.97 And I've got to be careful. 00:07:23.00\00:07:24.34 This is not a policy critique moment. 00:07:24.37\00:07:27.28 Yeah. 00:07:27.31\00:07:28.64 But I do think, for many churches, 00:07:28.68\00:07:31.11 and even our own Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:07:31.15\00:07:34.22 in administrative sense, 00:07:34.25\00:07:35.58 and many of the actual churches, 00:07:35.62\00:07:36.95 I think it was a great mistake, 00:07:36.99\00:07:40.32 and a lost opportunity to sort of go back 00:07:40.36\00:07:43.53 into our kennels on command. 00:07:43.56\00:07:45.03 Like turtles. 00:07:45.06\00:07:46.39 Yes. Yeah, I like that. 00:07:46.43\00:07:48.13 I know why you're saying that. 00:07:48.16\00:07:49.50 As we were driving here yesterday 00:07:49.53\00:07:51.20 in a fantastic rainstorm. 00:07:51.23\00:07:53.34 You were driving, you suddenly put your brake on, 00:07:53.37\00:07:56.20 and leapt out of the car. 00:07:56.24\00:07:57.57 And I thought, what's he seen? 00:07:57.61\00:07:58.94 It's been an accident or something. 00:07:58.97\00:08:00.31 And here was this snapping turtle about 18 inches long, 00:08:00.34\00:08:04.48 making its way. 00:08:04.51\00:08:05.85 Feisty little firecracker. Yes. 00:08:05.88\00:08:07.22 And when we stopped, 00:08:07.25\00:08:08.58 he turned around and came at us. 00:08:08.62\00:08:09.95 I was trying to pick him up. 00:08:09.98\00:08:11.32 So I put my hand on top of the shell reached 00:08:11.35\00:08:13.25 around and picked him up. 00:08:13.29\00:08:14.62 And he was trying to bite my hand. 00:08:14.66\00:08:15.99 Yeah. 00:08:16.02\00:08:17.36 But more than that, when you're letting go, 00:08:17.39\00:08:18.73 he would turn around and come at you. 00:08:18.76\00:08:21.00 But, yes, I mean, I'm glad you see that. 00:08:21.03\00:08:23.87 And I would hope most people that have a, 00:08:23.90\00:08:26.07 an urgency to share something exciting spiritual, 00:08:26.10\00:08:29.44 spiritually would, 00:08:29.47\00:08:30.97 would be a little troubled how quickly 00:08:31.01\00:08:33.11 we sort of went to sleep. 00:08:33.14\00:08:34.48 You could say, pulled into our shell, 00:08:34.51\00:08:36.44 shut the doors. 00:08:36.48\00:08:38.51 And I have many differences as a Protestant 00:08:38.55\00:08:41.48 from the Roman Catholic Church. 00:08:41.52\00:08:42.85 But one thing I've admired about its policy, 00:08:42.88\00:08:45.02 I don't think always during COVID. 00:08:45.05\00:08:47.36 But through the ages, and in many countries, 00:08:47.39\00:08:49.89 the doors of the church were always literally open. 00:08:49.92\00:08:52.43 Yeah. 00:08:52.46\00:08:53.80 Usually empty. 00:08:53.83\00:08:55.16 Yeah. And that's another point. 00:08:55.20\00:08:56.97 But I think spiritual needs actually increased during 00:08:57.00\00:09:02.40 a time of stress, don't they? 00:09:02.44\00:09:04.11 Oh, I agree. So this was... 00:09:04.14\00:09:05.91 I mean, I saw it firsthand. 00:09:05.94\00:09:07.74 I mean the need that people express. 00:09:07.78\00:09:09.98 I had one lady, I could tell that she'd been crying. 00:09:10.01\00:09:13.65 So I asked her, you know, 00:09:13.68\00:09:15.32 right before I left, I was like, 00:09:15.35\00:09:16.79 "Hey, is there anything you need prayer for?" 00:09:16.82\00:09:18.72 And she said, "Yeah, 00:09:18.75\00:09:20.09 I just lost a family member due to COVID." 00:09:20.12\00:09:22.66 And I said, "Well, let me pray for you." 00:09:22.69\00:09:24.86 And I prayed for her. 00:09:24.89\00:09:26.59 And when I said amen, she had a smile on her face. 00:09:26.63\00:09:29.60 And she looks at me and says, 00:09:29.63\00:09:31.33 "Thank you. I really needed that." 00:09:31.37\00:09:33.94 And it was just the most genuine smile 00:09:33.97\00:09:38.07 I'd seen that takes. 00:09:38.11\00:09:39.44 I've seen people that come at you, Hi, how are you? 00:09:39.47\00:09:42.24 You know that they have to smile. 00:09:42.28\00:09:44.25 Social smile. Yeah, social smiles. 00:09:44.28\00:09:45.65 Yeah. 00:09:45.68\00:09:47.02 Well think about what some of our neighbors 00:09:47.05\00:09:50.35 and obviously a few Christians 00:09:50.39\00:09:53.42 directly and even Adventists have gone through. 00:09:53.46\00:09:56.73 Family members died, member died 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.59 and during COVID, they were hospitalized, 00:09:58.63\00:10:00.90 you weren't allowed to go visit them. 00:10:00.93\00:10:02.26 I know. 00:10:02.30\00:10:03.63 When they died, you weren't allowed to... 00:10:03.67\00:10:05.00 See them. Often go to a funeral. 00:10:05.03\00:10:06.53 They would just go on. Yeah. 00:10:06.57\00:10:08.70 So there was a need for spiritual comfort 00:10:08.74\00:10:10.77 and some reassurance of this, 00:10:10.81\00:10:14.98 of the, not of the salvation, you can't assure them, 00:10:15.01\00:10:16.78 that person's gonna be in heaven. 00:10:16.81\00:10:18.58 That's foolish. 00:10:18.61\00:10:20.02 But you can certainly give spiritual comfort 00:10:20.05\00:10:22.02 that it's in the hands of God. 00:10:22.05\00:10:23.39 And that, even though 00:10:23.42\00:10:25.35 they might not have said goodbye, 00:10:25.39\00:10:26.72 that, you know, they rest easy in the arms of Providence. 00:10:26.76\00:10:31.73 But I have been troubled by the way 00:10:31.76\00:10:33.83 that we shut up so easily. 00:10:33.86\00:10:35.20 And if nothing else, 00:10:35.23\00:10:36.90 it may not be a purely legal question 00:10:36.93\00:10:38.77 or of religious liberty in the classical sense, 00:10:38.80\00:10:42.44 but it's clearly a lost opportunity. 00:10:42.47\00:10:46.68 And I've always wondered as the Seventh-day Adventist 00:10:46.71\00:10:49.38 and the Bible believing Christian 00:10:49.41\00:10:50.85 and more importantly a Revelation reading. 00:10:50.88\00:10:54.48 You've read Revelation... 00:10:54.52\00:10:55.85 Yeah. Yes, I have. 00:10:55.88\00:10:58.65 The good parts. Variety. 00:10:58.69\00:11:01.16 But you can't help reading Revelation, you know, 00:11:01.19\00:11:03.59 that difficult times are predicted 00:11:03.63\00:11:05.39 for a world in decline. 00:11:05.43\00:11:07.20 Yeah. 00:11:07.23\00:11:08.96 And even if you're not a Christian, 00:11:09.00\00:11:10.67 or a Bible reader, 00:11:10.70\00:11:12.03 you know that the world is sort of spiraling, 00:11:12.07\00:11:15.17 somewhat out of control. 00:11:15.20\00:11:16.67 You know, many secularists think that beyond this, 00:11:16.71\00:11:18.74 it'll organize and they might be 00:11:18.77\00:11:20.41 a secular paradise, but they don't, 00:11:20.44\00:11:21.91 none of them say it's there now. 00:11:21.94\00:11:23.51 Yeah. 00:11:23.55\00:11:24.88 And, you know, I went to communist countries, 00:11:24.91\00:11:28.88 I'm trying to think, yeah, by the time you were born, 00:11:28.92\00:11:32.02 the Soviet Union already collapsed. 00:11:32.05\00:11:34.39 But at its peak, you know, 00:11:34.42\00:11:35.76 the idea was that socialism in the communist sense, 00:11:35.79\00:11:39.63 this Communist Revolution was going to engulf the world 00:11:39.66\00:11:42.50 and it would bring in a secular paradise. 00:11:42.53\00:11:44.27 Never happened. Never. 00:11:44.30\00:11:46.53 The theory was not always totally wrong, 00:11:46.57\00:11:49.30 but the practice was impossible, 00:11:49.34\00:11:51.07 because it was dealing with, 00:11:51.11\00:11:53.61 you know, the aspirations of human beings 00:11:53.64\00:11:55.54 that's full of jealousy and violence 00:11:55.58\00:11:57.68 and greed and so on and couldn't work. 00:11:57.71\00:12:01.55 So not communists anymore, not necessarily, 00:12:01.58\00:12:05.29 or even capitalists see, you know, a great, 00:12:05.32\00:12:08.42 wonderful horizon. 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.03 Right now the world is sort of in a, in a... 00:12:10.06\00:12:12.93 You're a good swimmer. 00:12:12.96\00:12:14.30 That's that summer school, 00:12:14.33\00:12:17.30 you were a lifeguard and swim instructor. 00:12:17.33\00:12:20.97 So you know that, 00:12:21.00\00:12:22.34 don't you agree the world right now 00:12:22.37\00:12:23.71 is sort of treading water. 00:12:23.74\00:12:25.07 It's not going strongly anywhere, but it's... 00:12:25.11\00:12:28.04 Dog paddling. 00:12:28.08\00:12:29.41 Yes, dog paddling. 00:12:29.44\00:12:31.78 And, you know, 00:12:31.81\00:12:33.45 part of the dog paddling 00:12:33.48\00:12:34.82 is get as many injections and people as you can, 00:12:34.85\00:12:38.05 and many weren't, 00:12:38.09\00:12:39.42 they're sort of like the ones that's dog paddling 00:12:39.45\00:12:41.09 with the missing foot. 00:12:41.12\00:12:43.06 Harder to stay afloat, isn't it? 00:12:43.09\00:12:45.69 So we need spiritual hope. 00:12:45.73\00:12:47.73 And what's your take away after going those 00:12:47.76\00:12:52.10 door-to-door contacts, 00:12:52.13\00:12:54.84 did that make you feel good? 00:12:54.87\00:12:57.01 I mean, as a person, 00:12:57.04\00:12:58.37 I'm going to do a quick plug for Core real quick because 00:12:58.41\00:13:01.24 it was a great experience shot at to Dee Casper. 00:13:01.28\00:13:04.78 He was one of the organizers. 00:13:04.81\00:13:06.15 He was the organizer. 00:13:06.18\00:13:07.52 He was the director. It was a... 00:13:07.55\00:13:09.48 It was an amazing program. 00:13:09.52\00:13:11.79 Not only where you learn a skill that you can use, 00:13:11.82\00:13:16.16 but as well as you learn how to love Jesus 00:13:16.19\00:13:21.00 on your own personal ways. 00:13:21.03\00:13:23.73 You learn how to accept that He is a friend. 00:13:23.77\00:13:28.14 It's life changing. 00:13:28.17\00:13:30.51 I mean, I went, you know, 00:13:30.54\00:13:33.14 not thinking that I was going to learn much of anything. 00:13:33.17\00:13:35.74 Come back knowing that now 00:13:35.78\00:13:38.41 I can go door-to-door selling whatever I need to sell, 00:13:38.45\00:13:44.29 books, hope and hope as well. 00:13:44.32\00:13:46.39 No, but hope. That's the point. 00:13:46.42\00:13:47.76 Yeah, yeah. 00:13:47.79\00:13:49.12 You're not just selling books or lessons or anything. 00:13:49.16\00:13:51.66 You're giving people hope, uplift. 00:13:51.69\00:13:53.80 And the smiles I saw on kids' 00:13:53.83\00:13:55.90 faces whenever I gave books 00:13:55.93\00:13:58.17 or on adults' faces was just amazing. 00:13:58.20\00:14:00.57 Wonderful. 00:14:00.60\00:14:01.94 We'll take a break. 00:14:01.97\00:14:03.30 But stay with us. 00:14:03.34\00:14:04.67 We'll be back shortly to continue this discussion 00:14:04.71\00:14:06.34 with my guest Christopher Steed. 00:14:06.37\00:14:08.68 Great last name by the way. 00:14:08.71\00:14:10.18
